You will never guess what!!! WE ARE (Nearly) IN THE HOUSE!!! We are fully intending to be moved in on the evening before my birthday, which is the 17th of March (still time to get my card posted and organise my pressie!). It’s not going to be house finished or tools down by any means.... but it will be our own space at last... Best birthday present ever, thanks a million BF. The team at Scene HQ are mega happy too, as they don’t have to listen to me banging on about it constantly. I’m going from acting like a 4 year old on nine tubes of ‘E’ number riddled rainbow sweets, to shear panic of “it won’t be ready on time” not the end of the world I know, in the grand scheme of world poverty, but I have been waiting so long......and for those of you very, very, very lucky people who have the massive honour of knowing my acquaintance, ‘waiting’ is not on my top 10 quality list, in fact, I am more of a “do it NOW!” kinda person. OK, now down to business: We have some great stuff going on for March. We are launching the Green Wheel Scene (check out the centre pages), we want to get everyone out on their bikes and enjoying the brilliant Green Wheel Routes we have

around us, and we have inserted one of the routes into this edition. (All sounds a bit too strenuous for me). We are starting off the event in association with the kind people of Terry Wright Cycles as they are giving away a bike worth £400 – yes.... £400!!! Just answer the question and get your entries in, this is a fantastic prize for anyone and everyone. A new Award Winning band The Beavers, are here on the 25th March, a mega mix of tunes from the 50’s ‘till now, they even have pretty laser lights! (see page 47). If you fancy a laugh, there’s a comedy ballet show at the Key Theatre that looks hilarious, but is slightly too close to laughing at me on stage I think, turn to page 45 and you’ll see what I mean!! We have our next instalment of Holly’s travel blog which is all about preparation (and injections... ouch), plus we have a feature on Easter around the world – I couldn’t believe it wasn’t all about the Easter Bunny, and chocolate! Ah well, you live and learn.... Have a great month everyone, let’s pray for sunshine!!! Lovage! Charlotte. x

Special Events Help Residents Complete 2011 Census Questionnaires A series of special events being organised by Peterborough City Council will assist residents who need extra help in completing their 2011 Census questionnaires. The events – starting with a Victorian-themed session opened by the Mayor, Councillor Keith Sharp, at Peterborough Town Hall on census day, Sunday 27 March 2011 – will offer confidential guidance for people who have difficulties in completing their questionnaires. Census forms will be mailed to households from the beginning of March and must be completed – before, on or immediately after census day – with information about everyone staying at that address on Sunday 27 March. Questionnaires should be returned by mail in a pre-paid envelope provided or, for the first time this year, they can be completed online using a unique access code printed on the front of individual forms. Peterborough Museum staff wearing Victorian outfits will provide a display of Victoriana at the first completion event at the Town Hall on Sunday 27 March from 12 noon until 4pm. Members of the library archives service team will also demonstrate how past census records are invaluable to family history researchers. Members of the local Office for National Statistics census team will also attend to help answer questions.

Tea & Art In Peterborough For the first time ever, local people can see Tony Nero’s work exhibited in Harriet’s Tea Room, Cathedral Square, Peterborough. The local charity fund-raiser, cultural activist and family man, says he is enjoying sharing his work with even more people! Alongside Tony, is fellow Peterborough Open Artists Studio (PAOS) artists Ann Ardron. Both artists have established reputations, with a London gallery already showing great interest in Ann’s work and Tony’s track record of exhibiting throughout the Greater Peterborough area, as well as in a number of exhibitions in London and the US! The ongoing exhibition also spearheads the effort from Dawn Birch-James of Active Interiors, proprietor of a local art and antiques company and Kingsley Raphael, proprietor of Harriets Tea Room, who have both been working hard to create a NEW art space in the centre of Peterborough!

Roman Artefacts Revealed For all your carpet and flooring needs.... come to the experts
Significant remains from Iron Age and late Roman settlements have been discovered during archaeological surveys prior to construction of a new neurological care home at the ‘Oak tree’ site in Bretton Way, Peterborough. The developer, Milton Keynes-based PJ Care, now aims to preserve the finds, which include a late Roman stone-lined tank that could have been used for ancient rituals, hob-nailed leather shoes, almost complete pots, coins and animal remains.

A report of the archaeological survey will be published in the council’s Historic Environment Record (HER) and made available for public inspection and research.
Local registered charity, Anna’s Hope, were presented with a cheque for £3,000 by Milton Golf Club Ladies Captain from 2010, Mrs Suzanne Evans, with fellow ladies golfers.
City council archaeologist Rebecca Casa Hatton said the 2.5-metres deep tank appeared to be lined with re-used stone slabs, possibly removed from an earlier official building comparable to the palatial Roman villa (Praetorium) at Castor, just five kilometres (three miles) south-west of the site.
Anna’s Hope became a registered charity in November 2006 and exists to give hope to children and young people who have a brain tumour, by providing better rehabilitation, support and funding research into finding a cure.
There is evidence of at least two Iron Age roundhouses in the eastern part of the site and the other finds indicate there could have been a Roman settlement nearby. The leather shoes were found in exceptionally good condition of preservation. PJ Care now plans to preserve the lower part of the tank in its existing location, while reconstructing the upper part to create an interior display along with some of the more interesting finds with interpretation boards explaining the history of the site. The archaeology works were arranged by the Cambridge office of Oxford Archaeology East.
The charity was inspired by a very brave little girl called Anna Olivia Hughes. She was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in February 2005 and after 13 months of treatment Anna sadly lost her battle and died in May 2006, aged only 3 years 8 months. Anna’s parents, together with her sister, Sara shared her journey througho sut and discovered that brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and this ‘forgotten cancer’ was seriously under-funded versus other cancers. With the support of Anna’s Godparents and close friends they set up Anna’s Hope to help other children and young people diagnosed with a brain tumour and give them hope of a better future.

Flooring Think about the volume of traffic and how much
cleaning will be required when considering which flooring to choose. If you are having carpet make sure you get a hardwearing, stain resistant one with good underlay. You don’t have to choose a dark carpet, just make sure you have the facility for people to wipe their feet properly before they enter. If you are opting for a wooden or tiled floor, a non-slip door mat is essential and remember, only use a runner if it is necessary and there are no tripping hazards.
Function Next regard the function of the area - have you got
Make an entrance By Sue Hessom
We welcome our family and friends into our homes through the hallway. As it’s the first internal part of our home that they see it’s important that it gives the right impression. Too many people neglect this space with the excuse - ‘its just a walkthrough’. It might be just a walkthrough, but a badly designed hallway can leave your home feeling unwelcome, no matter what design surprises you may have hidden behind closed doors. Hallways come in various shapes and sizes and can be one of the hardest areas to decorate successfully, so give your design ideas some serious thought and do some research. Once you have an idea of the image you want to achieve, stand at your front door to visualise exactly how you are going to create your look.
Colours
Remember that there are no rules when it comes to decorating your home, so don’t be afraid to inject some of your personality into your hall area. Many people still choose white walls to help keep the space light and airy, but with high traffic volume the walls can soon start to look shabby and dirty, so only opt for white walls if you are happy to maintain them. Instead, why not consider painting the hallway two colours - one dark, one light. Paint all the walls that are left facing; light, and all the right facing ones; dark - this will not only add visual interest but will help to create a feeling of warmth and open space. If you are adamant in having wallpaper in your hallway, why not try something different? Find a wallpaper that reflects you and put it on the stair wall only. Then add some framed pieces of the wallpaper to the opposite wall - not only will this will look fantastic but the overall effect will not be too heavy.
‘Spring is sprung’ Carpets of bulbs bring colour to our gardens once more and if I close my eyes and listen carefully I’m sure I can hear the garden growing. The jobs list starts to grow now and you can combine all those garden jobs with some fresh air and exercise!
Ornamental garden • Sow some wild flowers. • Stake herbaceous plants that need

support now before growth gets too tall. Twiggy sticks like hazel or birch are ideal supports and soon disappear from view as plants grow through them. • Prune Hydrangeas back to a pair of healthy buds, and remove a couple of older stems. • Hollow stemmed shrubs like Buddleia and Sambucus can be pruned back hard now.
Kitchen garden • Plant first early potatoes towards the end of the month, lining the trench with grass clippings will help

prevent potato scab. • Sowing in the kitchen garden is well underway. But as your plot fills up leave room for a few rows of annual flowers like Cornflower, Nigella, Cosmos and poached egg plants (Limnanthes douglasii). This companion planting is not just attractive but will help attract more insects to pollinate, and predators like hover flies to devour pesky pests like aphids. • Plant onion sets in shallow drills, check regularly as blackbirds often mistake them for worms!
room for furniture or storage items? Consider this carefully as the last thing you want is for people to struggle getting in or out of your home. Console tables can look nice in a hallway and are functional for displaying fresh flowers and storing post and keys - just make sure your purchase the right size and don’t go too big. If you are struggling to find one that meets your needs, why not consider making one yourself? Likewise, if you want coats and shoes to be stored search the internet for some clever storage solutions - there are plenty out there that are multi-functional and take up minimal space.
Lighting If you have natural light coming into the hallway, try not
to block it out. Think about your window coverings and try to keep them to a minimum. However, if you like the idea of heavy curtains, design it so they can be pulled back during the day to let the light flood in. If you have no natural light, consider replacing full wooden internal doors with half glass ones - you will be surprised at the difference it makes. If you have a high ceiling then don‘t be afraid to showcase a stunning chandelier. If not, think about adding spot lights to the ceiling and stairs, or use a couple of strategically placed lamps to add an array of artificial light.
Finishing Touches Accessories should always complement your décor.
Mirrors are brilliant for reflecting natural light and will help any area look wider. Display some unusual pieces of art to get people talking, or use black and white photographs in the same finished frames; or a themed display of pictures to generate an area of interest. Finally, think about the small finishing touches that will complete your look and help create that wow factor - replace boring white plastic light switches and plug sockets with trendy silver ones. And if you can’t afford to update your radiator, either paint it or consider purchasing a radiator cover.
Hereward Carpets Top tips: • Laminate flooring is very popular in hallways as it is very durable and easily cleaned. • Have an entrance door ‘matwell’ installed – whether it’s carpet or laminate • Use your off-cuts to make a custom made doormat. If you want carpet, avoid very light colours, as these will be difficult to keep clean.

Who’s for free plants!
Plant of the month.
Over-wintered Dahlias can be potted up and with a little heat will quickly produce a crop of shoots ripe for cuttings. Scrape back the compost and with a sharp knife slice a healthy shoot away retaining a small sliver of the tuber. Now here’s the easy bit, fill a pot with Perlite (found in most garden centres, commonly added to composts to aid drainage) poke the cuttings in and stand the pot in a deep saucer of water. Healthy roots are produced in a few weeks and can be potted up to flower this year. This method is also very effective for Delphiniums.
Pulsatilla or pasque flowers are beautiful border plants, bright cup shaped flowers with finely dissected foliage all enveloped in a haze of soft hairs. They thrive in any good well drained soil with plenty of sunshine. I recommend - P grandis, P.vulgaris, P. vulgaris ‘Alba’, ‘Rubra’, ‘Bartons Pink’ and ‘Eve Constance’.

Weight loss without dieting! A Peterborough woman lost three stone after signing up for a revolutionary weight loss programme using a ground-breaking hypnotherapy technique. Emma Wood, 35, had been dieting on and off for years – trying various diets, weekly meetings, weight loss tablets and drinks, and gym sessions. The problem she found wasn’t necessarily losing the weight, but keeping it off. “I felt miserable and disgusted with myself and my confidence dropped to an all-time low. I was incredibly self-conscious and avoided looking at mirrors because I honestly didn’t recognise myself anymore. I’d reached the stage where I needed to do something that would combat my weight loss once and for all – not just a ‘quick fix’ solution,” Emma told us. After reading a magazine article about ‘Gastric Mind Band’ hypnosis, an Internet search led Emma to Prime Clinic. Their weight loss programme uses a combination of hypnosis and other therapies to treat the underlying cause of weight gain and after six weeks, Emma was convinced her stomach had shrunk, filling fuller quicker and not being able to eat big portions anymore. Furthermore, personal fitness sessions helped with toning up.

Hi Beauties, Well Spring is finally here, so it’s not surprising to see all the new beauty products popping up. This season’s trends are glowing skin, mixed with neutrals and pastels. I’ve selected a few of my favourite items to help you get the look. P.S. - Don’t forget - Mother’s Day is Sunday 3rd April this year (why not take your mum to this months beauty review -Ragdale Hall)
Spring Make-Up
Beauty review: Ragdale Hall Health Hydro and Thermal Spa
Body Shop has teamed up with London College of Fashion to produce the limited edition “Brush with Fashion” range. My favourite products are:
Illuminating Face Base - £14
Body Shop
Boho Beauty Palette £15
Clinique
Dolce & Gabbana
New Bottom Lash Mascara £10 – especially designed to get definition on every bottom lash. Pretty in Prints Compact - £25
Smooth Eye Colour Quad (£36.50) available online at:www.dolcegabbanamakeup.com or in store at Harrods
After an hour drive (including wrong turn) - I arrived at Ragdale Hall slightly late, not helped by the fact I hate mornings! So it was fair to say I was feeling slightly flustered, not helped by the miserable day and blustery wind whilst lugging my rather large bag from the car park into Ragdale - you wouldn’t believe how much space my make up bag, hair brush, shampoo & Conditioner, gym kit, UGG boots, books, magazines, hair straightners and bikini takes up. As I entered Ragdale Hall for my Refresh and Revive Spa Day package - my mood lifted, I was met by a very friendly porter who took me to reception. Whilst I waited I came across a very cute little character by the name “Raggles”, taken in as a stray 5 years ago. Raggles the cat is very much a part of the furniture and completely oblivious to the numerous spa goers around her. She even has her own
chair! So cute!!! After my introduction and receiving my agenda I went off to Fitness Yoga, the instructor was really good, friendly yet motivating and boy did my bum hurt after!! I then took the guided tour and before I knew it, it was time for lunch (why didn’t I get up earlier!) Lunch is taken in the gorgeous dining room, which could easily pass for a fine dining restaurant with stunning views! Not forgetting - you can dine in the comfort of your dressing gown and slippers. There’s a choice of 2 starters followed by a buffet lunch, I had the prawn and courgette terrine followed by the vegetable bake and a second trip of chicken and salad. Being good and aware of the fact I am spending the day in my bikini I passed on dessert. After lunch I headed to the main pool and jacuzzi followed by a trip to the impressive Thermal Spa, my favorite parts were the Thunder
Shower, Candle Pool,Volcanic Salt Bath and the Rose Sauna. Then it was treatment time, included in my package was a 25 minute facial and 25 minute back massage (which were both bliss). By this time it was 4pm, just enough time for a quick complimentary cuppa in the Verandah bar followed by a trip to the extensive beauty shop and gift shop (which has some lovely home ware bits). Then I sadly headed back to the changing rooms. One wash and blow dry later I emerged refreshed, revived and glowing. I headed out into the darkness and reluctantly made my way home. Overall the day was fantastic, I have highly recommended it to all my friends and family and hope to head back again soon.

What is the best way to spend a rainy Friday afternoon? Where better to feel completely relaxed and rejuvenated than The Bannatynes Spa. Having juggled a busy week of deadlines, I was more than ready to lay back and give my body a well deserved rest! The Spa at Banntynes is exactly what you would expect from a first class health club. Relaxing, warm and somewhere you don’t want to leave! I indulged in the Sheer Bliss Package which is a reasonable £39 for 70 minutes treatment time. My package included a lava shell massage, a scalp massage and an antiaging facial. Pure bliss! Massage with Lava Shells is fairly new and unique to Bannatynes. They are versatile massage tools and can be added to any treatment with the added benefit of being eco friendly. With no steam heater this enables constant contact on your skin, feeling the benefit through-out your massage. Another little treat
that comes with the lava shells is that they have the added benefit of giving off calcium irons when heated. These go directly into the skin, leaving it feeling firmer and healthier. My facial saw my skin being cleansed, exfoliated, toned and moisturised all with beautiful anti-aging products from Elemis which give off the soft, soothing, scent of rose. The Spa is open to the public and certainly has its benefits of being out of town, with free parking. Day spa packages start from just £32 per person and are arguably one of the best ways to spend a rainy Friday afternoon. www.bannatynespa.co.uk

City Scene Green Wheel pages The City Scene is delighted to bring you the launch of the Green Wheel pages, which will run for the Spring and Summer, bringing you information on the cycle ways available to you in the Greater Peterborough area, cycling advice and, to get things started, a fantastic competition and chance to win a bike worth £300. With the completion of the Olympic Velodrome in February, located in Manchester, our country’s cyclists have world class facilities on hand, but they all started from humble beginnings with stabilisers too! Get those budding Chris Hoy’s and Nicole Cook out on the Green Wheel and who knows where that may lead them.
The Green Wheel network of cycle routes provides over 45 miles of continuous sustainable routes around the city. It was one of the first large scale projects Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) delivered for Peterborough and first opened in 2000. Not only does the Green Wheel contribute to a sustainable transport system, it also celebrates over 3000 years of social, cultural and economic history through colourful interpretation boards and a series of sculptures.
With the launch of the Green Wheel pages, you will find a free copy of one of the 5 leisure guides with this month’s City Scene magazine, courtesy of Travelchoice in Peterborough.
Also, the first 100 people to email Travelchoice at travelchoice@peterborough.gov.uk will receive a voucher to collect a free cycle map, worth £2, from the Destination Centre on Bridge Street. March 2011 | Email: info@scenepublishing.co.uk

I’m handing the job over to STA Travel; for a small admin fee they’ll sort it all out including any mistakes on the application.
Holly’s travel blog
The Dreaded Injections I had anticipated my vaccinations last month to be torturous, I was ready to fill you with horror stories of nasty jabs and feinting, but I’m pleased to say that the biggest wimp ever (yours truly) didn’t shed a tear! I need visas for a few of the places I’m visiting. Some can be sorted on the border, but others you need to apply for before you go. You can do this yourself but the process can be long and if you make a mistake you’ll have to start again, including paying twice for the visa application.
Vaccinations over, it’s time to sort out Malaria tablets.Your doctor or nurse will be able to advise you on where you should take them for and also which particular tablets will suit you best. You should hunt around for the best price (Boots, Lloyds etc) and don’t be afraid to ask them to price match.

Time to put my bartering skills into practice on my hunt for Malaria tablets… Holly Goodchild
Bags, Books and Bartering With my travel date creeping up fast and lots to do, I decided this was the perfect time to go bag shopping… but not that kind of bag… My bag collection is huge, but my most recent addition is definitely the biggest of all. I am now the proud owner of a Eurohike AMAZON 45 litre rucksack! As with all bag shopping trips it’s easy to get carried away (excuse the pun) and spend far more than necessary. I found mine in the sale reduced from £90 to £40! It’s comfortable, has adjustable straps and opens like a suitcase which is handy for keeping things organised.
Think about: How long you’re backpacking for? What will you be doing whilst your there? Weather?
30
If you are looking at a 45 litre bag and quietly scoffing at the thought of three months worth of clothes (plus shoes) fitting in there, stop. You have to be able to carry this bag around.
One thing it is a good idea to book before you leave, is your first couple of nights of accommodation so that when you arrive jet lagged, hungry and disorientated you don’t then have to phone manically round hostels in search of a spare room.
Planning Your Visits Insurance & Visas Armed with my stack of books, maps and post it notes of everyone else’s “must sees”, I began writing a fact file and plan for each country. I then realised I was rewriting the Lonely Planet Guide. I am the opposite to my laid back boyfriend and whilst this attitude might not get the dinner ready in the evening or the bins put out for collection on the right day, it seems his care free attitude is the right approach in deciding what to do on the trip. Ideas are great. A typed up and filed summary of each country is not.

Easter Traditions Easter is a holiday celebrated universally around the world, yet, in many different ways. The event being commemorated is the same everywhere but every nation and every culture have their own customs and traditions that make them unique. In England, traditionally, people eat hams and hold special parades and ceremonies. Churches are adorned with lilies, Morris dancers are invited into the town squares and pancakes, Simnel cakes, hot cross buns and chocolate are scoffed by children and adults alike. But, it’s interesting to take a look at some other customs from around the world that are performed to celebrate Easter – here is the top ten weird and wonderful Easter celebrations from around the globe: It might seem like Halloween comes early in Finland when at Easter, children dress up as witches and collect candy door-to-door, in exchange for decorated pussy willows. This is a result of the mixing of an old Orthodox tradition of blessing houses with willow branches and the Scandinavian Easter witch tradition. In some parts of Western Finland, too, bonfires are held on Easter Sunday, a tradition meant to ward off witches flying around between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. On Maundy Thursday in some parts of Spain, a traditional “death dance” is performed around the streets. Everyone involved is dressed in costumes and the parade ends with frightening skeletons carrying boxes of ashes- the scary dance begins at midnight and continues for three hours into the early morning. In Bermuda, a symbolically important part of the Easter celebration is the flying of kites to symbolize Christ’s ascent. Bermudians of all ages help create the traditional bright-coloured kites as Easter approaches. Also, in addition to hot cross buns and Easter eggs, fish cakes are traditionally eaten in Bermuda at this time.
In Germany, the tradition is to create an Easter fire out of used Christmas trees from the winter. The fire is seen as a symbol of the victory for the beautiful and sunny spring over the cold days of winter. Perhaps we should start this tradition in freezing Britain! In Bulgaria, people don’t hide their eggs: apparently they have egg fights! Whoever comes out of the game with an unbroken egg is the winner and assumed to be the most successful member of the family in the coming year. Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, March 8 in New Orleans. Mardi Gras, “Fat Tuesday”, is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Mardi Gras is music, parades, picnics, floats and excitement – a fun holiday for all! In Poland, custom has it that if the master of the house helped to prepare the traditional Easter bread, his moustache will go grey and the dough will fail, so he is banned from taking part. Britain actually does have some unusual traditions of its own; at the Hocktide festival in Hungerford, the town’s new police constable blows his horn to call all the men to the Hocktide Court in the town hall. Two men are then elected and parade through the streets giving women oranges in return for kisses. So whatever you do this festive season, have a happy Easter!
More than 4,500 eggs are used to cook up a giant omelette on the streets of Haux in France. The meal, made every Easter Monday, must feed up to 1,000 people and is prepared in the main square in time for lunch before being given to the less fortunate within the town. What happens in Slovakia is that on Easter Monday it’s customary for the girls and women to stay at home while the boys and men go from the residence of one relative to another, bringing greetings and intending to “water” the female relatives present. Water is the symbol of life and the pouring of water is a gesture meant to bestow year long health and beauty. Some use a spray of perfume instead of water, or both.

Q:
Finance
Are there systems we can install to reduce water waste in the running of our house?
A:
Toilets use 20-25 per cent of the water consumed in each UK home –an average household flushing away 50 litres of what is known as ‘potable’ (ie drinking quality) water daily. In parts of Europe, building regulations require hard surfaces - driveways or terraces - to be permeable with a sump collecting rainwater below, which is then the only type of water permitted for use for washing cars or watering the garden. Households manage a certain amount of rainwater harvesting through water butts. A few of us have ‘greywater systems’ which collect bath water for re-use. A more user-friendly system is available using an underground tank and pumping system. This allows all rainwater to be harvested from the property to store underground ready for re-use. For drinking water, the only real option - unless you have a water course or lake on your property - is to sink a borehole, providing that you live in a suitable area. This is a big undertaking with research on ground water levels and rock strata needed to be gathered first in advance of applying for a formal Abstraction Licence. Q:
Citizens Advice
I have seen adverts for companies who say they offer free benefits advice and who say they can help you claim backdated benefits on a no win no fee basis. How do they work and are they a good idea?
A:
With more than £16 billion in means-tested benefits and tax credits currently going unclaimed every year it is definitely worth checking you are receiving everything you are entitled to. You can get a free, independent benefits check from your local CAB. However there are companies you can pay for the same service. They often describe themselves as offering ‘free’ benefits advice, but if they help you claim back any backdated benefits they will take up to a hefty 45 per cent out of any backpay that would have otherwise gone straight to you. So if you are thinking about approaching one of these companies make sure you read the small print. Depending on the amount of backpay you receive this could be as much as £1,500.
Health Spring is in the air! The days are getting warmer, daylight is lasting longer and the flowers are blooming. For most spring is one of the best seasons of the year. Although for others spring is miserable as they suffer through with allergies and hay fever. Spring allergies occur because of the pollen from the trees which start pollinating from January to April. The main symptoms of hay fever are:
• • • • •
Repeated sneezing attacks Runny or itchy nose Itchy or watery eyes Itchy throat, palate and ears Loss of concentration
•
General feeling of being unwell
If you suffer from these symptoms there are several things that you can do to help alleviate them. Practically, you can keep windows closed and try to stay indoors when the pollen count is high. Also try to avoid early morning outdoor activities as pollen is usually emitted between 5am and 10am.
What they are doing isn’t illegal, but the service they are offering is available for free from independent advice sources such as your local CAB where you can get a free benefits check up to make sure you are receiving everything you are entitled to. And that all of any backdated money goes in your pocket.
Another way to treat hay fever is medicinally. You
If you are unsure about what benefits you are entitled to or whether a company is going to charge you a fee or a percentage of any money you get back, you can contact your local CAB for a free benefits check or go to www.adviceguide.org.uk Peterborough CAB: 08444 994120

“Teen Scene” By Daniel Wiesner-Papp
Monthly Update Disappointing start to the month, not allowed to have parties anymore because my last one was waaaay to big, my mum wasn’t happy. Haven’t really got anything planned in March, I just can’t wait until summer! It’s going to be so good! Also, quite annoyed at the fact Ellie Goulding didn’t win any Brits!
Music – Dr Dre I’m thinking I should review some decent ‘gangsta’ music; Dr Dre (Andre Romelle Young) is legendary rapper from California who has helped out many rappers become who they are and as famous as they are today, such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. He is a very talented man, as he is an actor, producer and obviously a musician. Dr. Dre began his career in music as a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru and he later found fame with the influential gangsta rap group N.W.A with Eazy-E and Ice Cube. They popularised the use of explicit lyrics in rap to detail the violence of street life. His 1992 solo debut The Chronic, released under Death Row Records, led him to become one of the best-selling American performing artists of 1993 and to win a Grammy Award for the single “Let Me Ride”.
Festivals!
The season is almost here! I still need to sort myself out a ticket for one… and I’m still debating whether to go to a friendly festival as opposed to a festival where I will end up with a black eye by the end, or my tent burnt down to the ground (Reading Festival). Where is everyone going this year? And what are the best festivals you have been to?
Live and Unsigned Keble Stradling from Oundle has wowed the judging panel of the UK’s biggest original music competition and sailed through the audition stage of Live and Unsigned.
Keble will be competing against the most talented bands and artists in the country at the Regional Final showcase of Live and Unsigned 2011 – all in a bid to be signed! The winners of 2011 will be thrust into the media spotlight through television, radio and the press and will have the opportunity to go on a world tour. Keble is now competing in the Regional Final, after making it through the auditions beating hundreds of other hopefuls and is preparing for the Regional Final Showcase on Saturday 2nd April at The Bedford Corn Exchange. After this the dizzy heights of the Live and Unsigned festival at the O2 in London beckon, if it all goes to plan! www.LiveandUnsigned.UK.com

Lovingly prepared by the children, cleaned up by Dad! Chocolate Chip Muffins Ingredients 250g / 8oz plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
175g / 6oz caster sugar 150g dark chocolate cut into chips 250ml / 1 cup milk 90ml / 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 200C / 400F. Line a 12 muffin tin with paper cases. • Sift together plain flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cocoa powder in a large bowl and mix in the sugar and chocolate chips. • Beat together the milk, oil, egg and vanilla extract in another bowl. • Mix the wet ingredients into the dry, stirring until just mixed. Take care not to overmix or your muffins will turn out dry; it doesn’t matter if there are lumpy bits in the mixture. • Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases and bake for 20 minutes until the chocolate chip muffins are springy and a toothpick comes out clean. These are delicious warm from the oven, when the chocolate chips will have melted into gooey luxury.
Variations;
Drop in some white chocolate chunks for a triple chocolate treat! For a slightly warm spicy flavour, instead of the vanilla extract add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon or mixed spice to the dry ingredients.

Want to feel good about your smile?

Knitting for Easter
We’ve had a look at some basics knits and purls and of course you can’t just carry on clicking away – you need to know how to finish it off!
Casting Off
Casting off is the method used to dispose of a number of stitches so is used to shape your knitting and also for making the last row of your work. Always cast off in the pattern, so when working on stocking stitch cast off knitwise on a knit row and purlwise on a purl row and when casting off ribbing, do so as if you were continuing to rib. Most pattern stitches can be followed when casting off.
Candle making This is a more unusual craft for you but one that once you have perfected it, can provide you with the source of many gifts for friends and family. Try making the candles in some vintage tea cups (not Mum or Granny’s best ones of course) – go for a root around at a car boot or charity shop. You will need; Wax pallets Stearin (an additive to help increase colour, reduce dripping and improve burning)

Freya North’s Top 3 Reads For Mothers Day
Author of 10 bestselling novels and winner of the Romantic Novel of the Year, Freya’s 11th novel, Chances, is published on March 31st
MUM KNOWS BEST by M and J Hanks Square Peg, 3rd March 2011, £8.99 There’s a big market for these type of books – the Dangerous Book For Boys being the most famous. What I loved about this book is that it’s full of down-to-earth helpful hints. It’s the sort of book I keep in the loo but once you dip in, you find yourself absorbed for hours. In our lives, where we assume we have to buy a gadget or gimmick for every task, this book is a wonderful and useful reminder that there’s a better, cheaper and more practical alternative. Every domestic dilemma is catered for with no-nonsense instructions. Stained mugs or cups? Rub in a little kitchen salt with water. Dirty microwave? Pop in several lemon slices in a bowl of water and cook on high for a few minutes. Watermarks on wood? Rub in some mayo, butter or marg, leave overnight and wipe off. Most useful for my household is a whole section on stains. I’m just summoning up the courage to try the remedy for my lost voice – an egg yolk mixed with the juice of a lemon and hefty spoonful of caster sugar… Watch this space!
New technology clears things up Do you have a misted up window? Have you been considering replacing the unit? Well, R A Baker has a money saving solution for you... Local glazing company R A Baker have invested in new technology which will enable them to pass on savings to their customers. The company, who have been established in Peterborough for 33 years, have purchased the licence to operate a Crystal Clear Window Works franchise. Ronnie Baker, Managing Director of R A Baker Glaziers said “Some double-glazed units often break down in the sun, especially south facing windows. Previously the only solution to the problem was a replacement unit. The new technology is a great opportunity, to not only save customers money, but also to reduce the amount of glass dumped into our depleting landfill sites.” Around six million domestic sealed units are replaced in the UK every year, resulting in waste of over 500,000 tonnes of glass.

“The Crystal Clear process can save customers up to 50|% rather than replacing the sealed units,” said Mr Baker, “the process is quick and simple and carried out on site. In most cases the units are not even removed from the framework. We then guarantee the unit for 20 years.” R A Baker Glaziers is the longest established window company in Greater Peterborough. They are a forward thinking company that are always looking for ways to improve their technology to give their customers the best possible service. NEW BEGINNINGS by FERN BRITTON HarperCollins 17th March 2011, £12.99 This is Fern’s debut novel and she takes as her theme the dilemma of how to have a career but also be a good mother. Her likeable heroine, Christie Lynch, is a journalist and single mother of two when she gets a lucky break – an appearance on a daytime TV talk show, the fabulously named Tart Talk. Spotted by a successful talent agent, Christie’s life changes in an instant when she lands a high-profile presenting job. She loves her new job at last she can afford to mend her leaking roof and treat her children. But as her career soars she has to spend more and more time away from home, from her children and from the burgeoning relationship she was forming with Richard, a single dad. Written with warmth, insight and humour, the book charts Christie’s journey as a mother and career woman – amd the choices and the sacrifices she must make will ring true for many readers.
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO LUBKA by LAURIE GRAHAM. Quercus, £7.99 Laurie Graham is one of my favourite authors – and greatly underrated. My mum and I often read her books at the same time. Graham is an author with a huge heart, a brilliant turn of phrase razor sharp wit – and she always finds fascinating subjects whether fictitious or historical (Gone With The Windsors – a fictitious diary set around the time of the Abdication – is one of my all time favourite books). This is her most recent novel and it’s gorgeous – both tender yet laugh-out-loud. Beryl Wexler left Pittsburgh for London, changed her name to Buzz and is now top of her game in the music PR business. But she’s forty-two and suddenly, instead of looking after the hippest new bands, she’s must go on tour with the Gorni Grannies - Bulgarian singers of a certain age. These ladies may not be the tantrum-throwing celebs Buzz is used to, but they present other challenges. How to stop Lubka straining yogurt through her knee highs? How to dissuade Kichka from stealing everything not nailed to the floor? Fuelled by copious shots of home-brewed plum rakia, Buzz and Lubka address life’s ups and down. It’s a wonderful, funny, warm tale of the friendship between women, whatever their age. Read it while your mum reads her copy.

PROS ‘N’ CONS • Speed √ • Space √ • Road holding √ • Škoda badge puts some people off X MANY PEOPLE still turn their noses up at Škoda. But it is madness to do that considering the brand is part of the respected VW family. It is even crazier to ignore the high-octane Octavia vRS which has proved extremely popular since it was launched in 2000. More than 60,000 have been sold, 70 per cent of which were the estate version. The sporty Škoda is available with a choice of two engines: the 200bhp 2.0 T FSI and the 170bhp 2.0 TDI CR. It was face-lifted back in April 2009 and still looks the business today with a redesigned front grille featuring the vRS logo, bold headlamps, front fog lamps and funky LED lamps for daytime lighting. On top of that is a large air intake covered in black mesh, while at the rear are twin chrome exhaust pipes to highlight the power under the bonnet of this Czech-made motor. My demo car was the 2.0 T FSI estate model and came with fat 18” alloy wheels, metallic paint and a lowered (127mm) sports-tuned chassis. The vRS interior features sports seats with aluminium trim, a three spoke, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and instrument dials with white LED illumination. Behind the wheel the athletic Škoda feels firm and brilliantly balanced. Put the pedal to the metal and the car takes off rapidly. Overtaking is a breeze, and the precise, well-weighted steering of the Octavia vRS inspires confidence. The car will wheel-spin with too much right foot action, but it never feels twitchy, despite its lively 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds and top speed of 149mph. Even with all its muscle the estate achieves an average fuel economy of 37.7mpg with CO2 emissions of 175g/km. That’s not bad considering the performance at hand.

Of course having an estate car with clout is not the only selling point. The Octavia’s gigantic 625-litre boot will swallow your day-to-day luggage and more. As a dad of two I got a pushchair, bags of kids’ toys, and the supermarket shopping in there. And with the rear seats folded flat the room is extended to a whopping 1655-litres of space - perfect for fitting in a couple of mountain bikes and some weekend camping gear. Škoda genuinely flourished throughout 2010 and is now firmly cemented as a class manufacturer. Anyone

Funny You Tube video We do like a Youtube giggle at home and of course conducted under strict parental supervision. The funny for us has been the cleverly crafted VW Passat advert where the young man of the household is dressed as Darth Vader and has taken to trying to ‘use the force’ on everything. Great advert and one with no spoken words – who needs to speak when you can use the force! - www.youtube.com

CHANCE TO COMMENT ON IMPORTANT PLANNING POLICY DOCUMENTS Three important documents setting out where and how future development will take place in Peterborough and surrounding villages undergo a six-week public consultation process from Friday 11 February until Thursday 24 March 2011. The most important is a ‘site allocations development plan document’. This identifies locations for the construction of 25,500 new homes, 24,600 work places and supporting infrastructure over the period to 2026. Once all comments have been collated, Peterborough City Council will submit the document to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who will arrange for an independent inspector to hold an ‘examination in public’. This will be a final opportunity for people to have their say on the proposals. The planning inspector will then make final recommendations and the proposals will become official policy for deciding future development schemes. Unlike earlier drafts, the latest version no longer includes provision for permanent sites for Gypsies and Travellers. The second consultation covers the draft ‘Peterborough planning policies development plan document’. Details of all three documents can be viewed at: http://www.peterborough.gov.uk from 9am on Friday 11 February. Comments on the site allocations and planning policies documents can be submitted online at http://consult.peterborough.gov.uk.
BUSINESSES RAISE £2350 FOR KIDNEY RESEARCH UK Local businesses have raised £2350 for Kidney Research UK at a series of events organised by Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. A comedy night and black-tie dinner, golf day, business women’s Christmas lunch and quiz night all inspired local business people to dig deep and support the charity’s life-changing work. The year has been an exciting one for Kidney Research UK, as it represents the 50th anniversary of funding life-saving research into the causes, prevention and treatment of kidney disease. Peterborough-based Roythornes Solicitors are the latest company to lend the local charity their support, having agreed to make Kidney Research UK their nominated charity for the year ahead. Peterborough Town Sports Club It is hard to believe looking out of the window on a grey cloudy, rainy day in late February that the first cricket match is only 7 weeks away. Members will be following events in the sub-continent where England will try to avoid embarrassing themselves as badly in the Cricket World Cup as their football counterparts did last Summer. There is little tennis at present but the process of planning for possible new facilities is grinding on through the Planning Application now with PCC. We wait with baited breathe for their decision. Squash is busy with newly crowned County Champion Dan Soar taking challenges from all comers and coming second in some cases. Dan is the Club enigma and his form tends to be governed by which side of the bed he uses!! Life would be boring for Dan if it was straight forward which is a large part of his charm. The Cambs league side will not be challenging for honours this season, mainly it appears due to random availability of the better players. It is a continuing mystery as to why people want to play for a top club and then compromise their availability. It happens in hockey too but at present this is not halting progress of the men’s hockey team towards winning the East league and gaining promotion to the National League. With 5 games left they are 9 points ahead of Bedford with a much better goal difference. Two wins should therefore be enough. I am sure Player Coach Gareth Andrew will be looking for a much higher level of commitment next season in the tougher competition if promotion is achieved.

Tottenham v West Ham (19th) This London derby has always been a spicy affair and this season many factors surrounding the game will no doubt add to the white hot atmosphere at White Hart Lane come kick off. Spurs, buoyed by their success both at home and abroad, (by match day they’ll know their fate in progressing through to the last 8 of the European Champions League or not) will be looking to go into the final weeks of the season on a high and will see this as a perfect chance to take 3 points. On the other hand Avram Grant’s irons will be desperate to get some much needed points on the board to ease the pressure, (currently West Ham sit 2nd bottom, 2 points from safety) on both him and his so far under achieving players.
The Posh
The Posh currently occupy the final playoff place in the npower League 1 division and with just 14 games remaining by the time you read this, the race to gain promotion to the npower Championship is entering the last leg. Darren Ferguson’s troops begin the month with a home tie to Exeter, a trip up the road to Nott’s County and then thankfully for Posh fans a HOME tie to Carlisle. Three evening trips to Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and then a Friday nighter
Unfortunately for them and all hammers fans I can’t see anything but a Tottenham win here.Yes they have had and will continue to have a strenuous fixture schedule, the price of competing at the highest level in European competition but Harry Redknapp has a squad brimming with balance and talent to be able to cope I believe. West Ham are the exact opposite. They have some top players within their ranks, the impressive Scott Parker, at times Carlton Cole as well as new signing Demba Ba to name a few but the lack of depth and seemingly never ending injury list that plagues Upton Park have proved a massive restriction so far in their quest to beat the drop. (MY PREDICTION 3-1)
at Bristol Rovers conclude the months games. Matches involving Posh seem to have as much entertainment value as any in world football at the moment, particularly at London Road where a staggering 75 goals have been scored as this goes to press. Unfortunately not all have been in their favour but if they can slightly secure the back door then with the firepower in obvious abundance a playoff place and who knows maybe more will surely be achieved.
