Welcome to the February edition of the Rutland Scene. Our communities have been busy lately, with awards

and volunteering (p5 – 10). Are you involved with your local community? Tell us your plans and news here at the Scene and we’ll help to spread the word.

It’s just turned a little chilly as we put this edition together, so maybe it’s time to curl up with a recommended read (p28) or get out the beauty treats (p18 & 19). For the family, why not get a good old board game out (p27). If you’re happy wrapping up and getting out and about, then some sensible fitness advice (p13) could be coupled with some winter gardening (p25). What’s on for half term features in our guide this month (p16 & 17).

Rutland Water Nature Reserve Education is Conservation... ...or should that read Conservation is Education? A phrase that is equally powerful no matter which way you say it and that has the potential to change the way people view the world, the local environment or even their local town. Of course there are many different subject areas in which one can be educated and that is a matter of personal interest, my interest, rather obviously, is environmental education. The whole ‘’environmental education movement’’ dates back to the 18th century and means different things to different people, perhaps because the term environment is so encompassing. To me environment means every thing ‘’natural’’ and by that I mean any thing from grassy fields and woods through too birds, fish and water, essentially any thing that could be seen as a ‘’wild (ish)’’ open space. Can you imagine a world where there are no forests to walk in or grassy banks next to reservoirs to sit on and enjoy a picnic whilst the birds sing in the trees around you? With a growing human population the pressure for resources such as food, water and space to build houses has never been greater, thus it is vital that we place a value on our natural resources and inspire people to conserve them. Rutland volunteer appeal is a huge success An appeal for volunteers for Rutland Library Service, organised in partnership with the local newspaper, exceeded all expectations at the end of 2011. Following an appeal during November, 19 volunteers that came forward are now going through the final stages of training, with 12 of them already assigned a role within their local library. Although the original appeal was for library volunteers, the service has found that some of those people who have come forward have had skills more suited to Oakham Castle and Rutland County Museum. A total of 19 volunteers are now progressing through training (run in partnership with Voluntary Action Rutland) and inductions with Rutland County Council. Some volunteers have already been allocated specific roles including: • • • • • • • •

1 storytime volunteers for the libraries 2 ICT volunteers for Oakham Library 2 volunteers to support the library housebound service 2 researcher volunteers for the museum – 1 to research textiles 5 shelf stacker volunteers to help at the libraries 1 MicroLibraries volunteer 2 Local Studies Researchers 2 tour guide volunteers who will be available to provide tours of the castle and are updating the information held with regard to the horseshoes

ACCESS TO WORK HUB SUCCESS The Access to Work hub, based at Oakham Library has now helped more than 100 people with advice and guidance about finding a job or getting training that they need to get back into employment. The hub was set up in April 2010 to help residents with CV writing, applying for applications, job searching and interview skills. So far the hub has helped more than 30 people to get back into work, assist people with gaining voluntary work, more than 20 people have booked onto training courses, and the hub has helped someone to become self-employed. For more information about the Access to Work Hub please visit www.rutland.gov.uk/librabries

LIBRARIES PROVIDE FREE DOWNLOADS Residents who may have received a e-book reader* for Christmas, will be pleased to know that books can now be downloaded for free from Rutland Libraries. Many titles from popular authors are now available from the FREE download service. New e-books are regularly added to the collection and can be accessed by logging into the library service with a library card and pin. Residents can borrow 3 e-books in addition to the regular library borrowing allowance and can keep them for up to 3 weeks. Library users can download e-books direct from their home computers and most other ebook readers, as e-book loans expire at the end of the loan period, there are no overdue charges. For more details please visit the e-Books page on the Rutland Library Service website at www.rutland.gov.uk/libraries *The e-books will work on most e-reader devices, however they will not work on Amazon Kindles, due to Amazon making a commercial decision not to allow Kindles to work with library systems. This is the case for all library services in the country.

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

NEW YEAR New Year, is the health equivalent of pressing the refresh button on your life. No matter what you did, a New year means a new you. The process is as simple as it is motivating. Learn from the past experiences and plan for a better way forward. Reinvent yourself, set new goals, and become the person you want to be. Using the above ‘mantra’ we can apply this to your ‘new’ dietary needs. No doubt you have been bombarded with numerous emails or magazines through January, all related to losing pounds a day for 30 days. Generally I think most people know what’s not good for them, it’s the temptation that doesn’t help. Let’s try a few simple steps • Sweets and confectionary take into work or give to charity and clear

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY FASHION

Accessorising It is easy to ruin a great outfit by teaming it with the wrong accessories. But, it’s also incredibly easy to make an ordinary outfit look great with the right accessories, because, when used correctly, they pull the entire look together. So, if you’re a bit puzzled about what to do when it comes to accessorising, here are a few guidelines to keep you looking beautiful!

First of all, accessories should be used to:

Shoes should have larger soles and heels to add height and balance out your legs. HOME & GARDEN

Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

JOBS FOR THE MONTH

February - not so bleak this winter (I’ve still got Roses in flower!) and as white snowdrops unfurl, the heavenly citrus scent of Witch Hazel floating on the breeze, we know spring is just around the corner. Much to do in the garden!

The kitchen garden • Apply a general fertiliser like blood, fish and bone to all fruit trees and bushes.

Ornamental garden • Now is the time to prune your Wisteria. Prune back to two buds on all laterals/side shoots, leaving just two fat flowering buds to provide large impressive flowers in May. • Late flowering clematis, prune to 30cm and mulch. • Prune your hybrid T and floribunda roses. • Grass has really not stopped growing so if we have a dry week give a light trim with cutting blades raised high to keep your lawn in check. To borders apply a generous layer of mulch after a winter tidy. There are a number of options available such as home-made compost, well rotted farm manure or composted bark. Annual mulching is one of the secrets to successful borders, improving soil structure and retaining moisture, both vital factors to keep plants growing healthily.

• If your soil allows, towards the end of the month try a short row of early potatoes under horticultural fleece for an early crop. Also, direct in the ground with fleece protection, sow early peas, broad beans, beetroot, radish, spinach and spring onion. • Keep feeding the birds they are your free caterpillar, slug and snail control!

Early spring delights For me a must have plant for the winter garden is the shrub Hamamelis, or witch hazel. Flowers are exquisitely delicate papery tassels, from yellow to red and orange with a subtle citrus scent, most flowering now some in the autumn. Easy to grow, it prefers lighter soils and does well in semi shade or full sun. With no routine pruning needed this is a wonderful plant to brighten up any dreary winter’s day. Good varieties - Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’, ‘Diane’, ‘Jelena’, ‘Arnolds promise’, ‘Copper Beauty’ and Hamamelis mollis. Another early spring delight is Daphne mezereum. Gorgeous pink flowers borne on bare stem with a little scent, this small shrub can’t fail to raise a smile! Easy to cultivate can tolerate most soils in full sun or partial shade, no regular pruning needed just plant it some where it can be seen and enjoyed. Telephone: 01780 783613 | February 2012

Games are not just about fun and family time though, they also bring in education and problem solving. A game which ticks all these boxes is Callisto. It’s easy to learn, but uses strategic skills, dexterity and a bit of luck (so any age can play!). The game was designed by won major international board game awards. The object of the game is to get rid of all of your coloured tiles onto the game board and takes just a few minutes to learn.

In recent years, Top Trumps have seen a revival covering television and film characters, sports and modern cartoon characters.
