Hello and welcome to the November edition of the Stamford Scene. I have just returned from a wonderful trip to South Africa, which was truly amazing. Staying in Cape Town, which has a fantastic vibe; very cool and trendy. Then I flew up to the Kruger National Park for some serious Safari action – what a superb holiday! Of course, you know what it is like, you are back in the office for a week and the holiday is a distant memory, so I am glad I took over 420 photos (best invite the family round for the slide show). Well enough about me, the November edition has a Christmas theme, so I hope you are all starting to get into the mood? I love this time of year, especially once Halloween and Guy Fawkes are over, it is festivities all the way.... if you are looking for somewhere to spend Christmas, we have found out some details of local venues, you might like to try (see page 9), also if you need some inspiration about gifts, then look no further – go to pages 32, 34 and 35 for some great ideas... and they are all local too! This edition has a great FREE to enter prize draw to win a relaxing, indulgence break for 2 at Scalford Hall Country House, the prize includes a nights stay, 3 course dinner, breakfast and a mini spa treatment – see page 31 for more details. So wrap up and let’s hope we get lots of those sunny, crisp autumn days, ideal for lots of walks, bike rides and fresh air. If you are going to a firework display, please be careful and enjoy! all the midwife is an extraordinary read and for me a real moment when I found an author who’s other books I was desperate to get on and read. This book tells the story of a trainee midwife, Jennifer, working in the poorest areas of the East End of London, delivering babies in the most appalling conditions having cycled through smog in the middle of the night. I could read this again and again!

Harlan Corben Orion £18.99 y weekend reads are usually crime thrillers and here again Harlan Coben comes up with a great plot full of emotion. Seventeen-yearold Haley McWaid is the pride of her suburban New Jersey family, captain of the lacrosse team and planning on heading off to college next year. When Haley disappears everyone assumes the worst. A local reporter is on a mission, to identify and bring down sexual predators via elaborate and nationally televised sting operations but quickly realises she can’t trust her own instincts about this case, or the motives of the people around her.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING From boiling an egg to writing a presentation for business, all of us need split-second timing in our lives. chronograph from Robert Loomes of A Stamford gives so much more than that: a luxury mechanical wristwatch-cum-stopwatch
that is hand built by the man whose name is on the dial; one that is only available from the shop where they are made. Said Robert “To make a chronograph is to fashion a work of art. To make a gift of one is to ensure you will be remembered for ever.” Nobody else in the country makes mechanical chronographs in their own workshops, so this is indeed a rare gift. Each watch is carefully built in his Stamford workshops from scratch, with every wheel, pivot and screw checked, cleaned, polished and lubricated by hand before the movement can be tested. It takes a highly skilled watchmaker the best part of a day just to build the mechanism. Robert works using a Swiss design from the 1940s, once used by Breitling and Omega. The model was long forgotten because it was a labour intensive movement and not suited to modern mass-production techniques.

Don Lamber
t
Robert has radically improved the design and made it a thing of beauty. Once completed he fits his unique dial and hands and assembles the whole into the case. Each is then rigorously tested for accuracy and reliability. Robert Loomes is creating a limited edition of one hundred chronographs, available to order only from his shop on St Mary’s Hill. 4 St Mary’s Hill | Stamford | PE9 2DW info@dialrestorer.co.uk

“Stamford Shoestring Theatre will once again delight audiences with Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance”
R
ecently hailed by the Sunday Times as “amongst the finest amateur reps in England” Stamford Shoestring Theatre will once again delight audiences with Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance at Stamford Arts Centre from 7 to 11 December.
Between 1891 and 1895 Oscar Wilde established his reputation as one of the most important playwrights of his day with four social satires – Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892); A Woman of No Importance (1893); An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest (both 1895).
Hypocrisy and scandal combine in a plot of typical Wildean wit. Beneath the lighthearted and witty exchanges of a weekend house-party, Wilde peels back social niceties to reveal a world that values appearance above integrity and encourages double standards in the different ways the behaviour of men and women are judged. Spectres are raised of seduction and scandal, infidelity and illegitimacy.
Director Diane Watson said: “By introducing the character of the dandy – witty, extravagantly dressed, a self styled philosopher and ridiculer of society’s moral arbiters - into conventional Victorian melodrama, Wilde provided a moral texture the form had never previously possessed, and changed it forever”.
Wilde is as cynical as ever about the shallowness of the upper classes in Victorian society - this sharp comedy remains remarkably pertinent today.

Maxey House Retirement Home
T
he new Health & Social Care Act 2008 comes into force in October 2010 for Care Homes. The new act brings with it many changes in the private health care sector, especially care homes looking after vulnerable adults such as the elderly. Its main principles are to ensure that the safety, welfare, rights, dignity and independence of people is both promoted and protected. With all these changes in mind and so as to comply with the new law, Laura Levin, sole proprietor of Maxey House, located just outside Market Deeping, has implemented a new Executive structure and has appointed Lindsay Morris R.G.N and her company, CMC Consultancy Ltd, to operate the full management of Maxey House along with her colleagues and the existing Maxey House staff. Laura Levin is very confident that this new structure will continue to ensure excellent
standards of care and attention are delivered to the residents whilst continuing to grow the business and enhance the reputation of the home throughout the local community. Laura Levin would like to thank the current staff at Maxey House for all of their hard work, their acceptance of change, their compassion, their overwhelming dedication to the residents and their continued loyalty to the home and herself. Maxey House currently has a limited number of vacancies for new residents, so should anyone be looking for a happy, friendly care home for their elderly relatives, please call in at the home for a viewing. No appointment is necessary unless you would like to see Lindsay in person to discuss the individual needs of your relative.
