THE WOODTURNERS OF KING’S CLIFFE EXHIBITION AT THE PRIEST’S HOUSE, EASTON ON THE HILL For centuries King’s Cliffe was renowned for wood-turning and spoon making, at one time being known as “The Wooden Spoon Village”. Towards the end of the 19th century the trade in domestic wood ware, or “treen”, was in decline. To counter this, a training scheme was set up in the village to teach people to carve. This resulted in some very high quality work, which was shipped all over Britain. An order was even received from the Royal Household for a butter mould engraved with Queen Victoria’s coat of arms. The trade finally ended with the death in 1941 of the last of the wood turners in Kings Cliffe, William Bailey, whose family had provided an unbroken line of turners since before 1600. Kings Cliffes Heritage holds an extensive collection of items produced by the local wood turners, together with photographs and explanatory panels. These will be on display in the 15th century Priest’s House at Easton on the Hill, a National Trust building, every Sunday afternoon this summer. In addition to this, visitors to the building will also see existing exhibitions on Collyweston slating and mining, the ironstone quarrying industry that flourished in Easton from 1876 to 1919 and information on the dendrochronology survey (tree ring dating) carried out last year to date the building. The Priest’s House will be open every Sunday afternoon in August from 2.00pm to 4.30 pm. All are welcome - entry is free.

Components Of Fitness There are five components of physical fitness, which we will cover individually over the forthcoming issues, building up a program of exercise for you to try. We will start with the Cardio-vascular (heart/lungs) you may know it as cardio, stamina, or aerobic. Basically in layman’s terms it’s “how efficiently we can transport and utilize oxygen around the body”. The two common dominators here are the heart and lungs (the heart being a muscle).
When do you use this muscle (heart)? Walking to the shops Playing with the children Walking up the stairs Completing household chores Dancing Playing your chosen sport or using aerobic machines in the gym. Find yourself out of breath when doing any of these activities? That’s because your heart is outside its comfort zone, imagine juggling with one ball then someone throwing you another three. So let’s train this muscle to be more efficient. Try this little challenge next time you are aerobic exercises i.e. 1. Walk, run, bike at your normal pace for at least 5 minutes
4. Not forgetting those stairs in the house, walk up & down normally for a couple of minutes, then complete 30 seconds of 2 steps at a time, repeat for 15 mins. 5. Always ensure that you finish any of these intervals with 5 minutes at your normal pace and stretch accordingly Try and do this at least 3 times a week and remember to have a drink at hand. The benefits of interval training are a stronger heart muscle, decreased blood pressure, and decreased risk of coronary heart decease to name a few. Acid or Alkaline? Soil is usually tested for whether it is Alkaline or Acid. The result can guide you to good plant choices – ones that will relish your soil and flourish! • Acid or ‘ericaceous’ with a pH between 1 and 7, such as peaty soil • Neutral with pH of exactly 7, such as clay soil • Alkaline or ‘limey’ with a pH between 7 and 14, such as chalky soil
In the UK, soils usually sit in the pH range of between pH 4.0 and 8.5. • Most plants prefer a pH of 6.5 to 7 – this is the point where nutrients are most easily available • But some are ericaceous plants and so need an acid soil – for example, most rhododendrons • For an alkaline soil, saxifrages feel right at home! Put an acid-loving plant in alkaline soil and it will suffer and die, and vice versa.

It’s been a challenging year in the garden as our weather has once again broken records, but we gardeners are a resilient bunch. As with all life we are bound by the elements and all its extremes, but with a little more caution, thoughtful planting and good gardening practices we shall prevail.

William Cecil Hotel by Megan Templeman
The William Cecil Hotel, formerly the Lady Anne’s, opens in July, but who actually was William Cecil, who was Lady Anne and how did the hotel we know today come about? William Cecil was in fact the first Lord Burghley, and was born on September 13th 1520 in Bourne, Lincs, to Jane Heckington and Richard Cecil, owner of the Burghley estate. William Cecil actually built and designed most of Burghley House between 1555 and 1587, was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I from July 1572 to August 1598, and was knighted in 1551. The Queen was very fond of him and is known to have said to him “This judgment I have of you, that you will not be corrupted with any manner of gifts, and that you will be faithful to the state…” William Cecil died on the 4th August 1598 in Cecil House in Westminster, and stayed Lord High Treasurer until his death. William’s second son Robert Cecil followed in his footsteps and became adviser to the Queen when his father died. Lady Anne Cecil may refer to two different women linked to Stamford and the Burghley estate. The first Lady Anne in question was William Cecil’s eldest daughter, born 5 December 1556 by William’s second wife Mildred Cooke. She was a poet and married Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford, on the 19th December 1571 at Westminster Abbey. Queen Elizabeth attended the wedding due to William’s connections. On the 2nd July 1575 she gave birth to Elizabeth, her first child. However, Edward accused her of being unfaithful and claimed that he was not Elizabeth’s father. He separated from Anne in 1576, and during this separation began an affair with another woman. However, he was eventually reconciled with his wife, finally accepting the fact that he was Elizabeth’s father. In total, Anne and Edward had 5 children, and Lady Anne died of unknown causes at the age of 31 in 1588. The other Lady Anne is the Lady Anne by which the hotel was most likely previously named, born in 1734. Her brother was the 9th Earl of Exeter, Brownlow Cecil,

and she actually lived in the main building which is now part of the hotel. She lived there until 1785 when she died at the age of 51. The building itself dates back from as early as the 18th century, but as the hotel is made up of 3 separate buildings, each has a slightly different history. After the death of Lady Anne, the main building belonged to George Lucas Esquire, but it was sold and then extended in 1796 and then the estate bought it back in 1882. One of the other buildings which now make up the William Cecil was built for John Clarke, the clerk of Brownlow Cecil, in 1771. The buildings were transformed into a hotel in the last century, approximately in the 1950s or 1960s.

“It’s all about the food” Food at the Plough will most definitely surprise you. Walking into the pub in Great Casterton, you might expect typical British pub food - nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, the food is beautifully presented, delicious, and the portion sizes large but not overwhelming. The menu comprises of a vast range of foods from scallops to burgers to delicious fishcakes. The scallops are simply to die for, arranged perfectly on top of black pudding and with a salad garnish and pork belly, just the perfect size for a starter, but available as a main as well if you fancy. The fishcakes won’t disappoint either; they are made with a variety of different fish including salmon and cod, unlike the processed fish that we’re used to today. A new starter has joined the menu; goat’s cheese panna cotta with blue cheese biscuits is perfectly prepared also absolutely delicious.

chocolate fondant and lemon tart were all gorgeous, a perfect finish to the meal. Being a chocolate lover, my favourite was the chocolate fondant, and although it takes 15 minutes to make, it was completely worth the wait! The sticky toffee pudding came with lashings of butterscotch sauce and homemade rum and raisin ice cream, and the lemon tart wasn’t too pungent, but had a pleasantly fresh taste - a refreshing end to the meal.
Recomended I really would recommend the Plough Inn, and can promise in The Good that you won’t be let down. The food is beautiful, the owners lovely and its garden Pub Guide is perfect for the summer months ahead. The Plough 2012 is also child friendly and the

We chose a roast breast of Gressingham Duck, lightly spiced Plaice fillets and homemade Lasagne, each meal being well presented and tasted their own unique way.
