elcome... Well, it’s November... we’re allowed to talk a little about Christmas... aren’t we?! Of course we are!! But firstly, this really is all about your local businesses this month....Rutland Tea Co, Out of the Rut, Rockingham Landrovers and Dean Street Photography....plus in the great gift ideas spread, both Uppingham and Oakham businesses have pulled out all the stops to get your ideas list started. The book reviews this month are direct from the Scene offices and a great new read really does make a special gift. As we’re all thinking ahead to the festivities, our thoughts can often turn to our homes and whether we’ve got time to add a fresh look maybe to the sitting room in time for the guests and of course Santa’s visit. Furleys have teamed up with us to offer interiors tips and advice, whether a small subtle change or that full all out revamp. Take a look at our competition this month – Nick’s Restaurant is offering a meal for two plus a bottle of wine. Finally, what’s on in Rutland is all over pages 36 & 37 including some of the local Christmas Church Services in Rutland. Our next edition into the South of Rutland will be January, so we wish you a wonderful Christmas and see you in the New Year! Heidi & Naomi The Scene

all the midwife is an extraordinary read and for me a real moment when I found an author who’s other books I was desperate to get on and read. This book tells the story of a trainee midwife, Jennifer, working in the poorest areas of the East End of London, delivering babies in the most appalling conditions having cycled through smog in the middle of the night. I could read this again and again!

Seventeen-yearold Haley McWaid is the pride of her suburban New Jersey family, captain of the lacrosse team and planning on heading off to college next year. A local reporter is on a mission, to identify and bring down sexual predators via elaborate and nationally televised sting operations but quickly realises she can’t trust her own instincts about this case, or the motives of the people around her.

Out Of The Rut In the heart of Oakham, local residents can now benefit from a new fruit and vegetable shop who’s ethos is ‘fresh, local and affordable’. Run by local business, ‘Out of the Rut’, the purpose of the shop is to provide opportunities for people with mental and/ or physical impairments who live in Rutland, to gain employment in a voluntary or paid capacity and to learn greengrocery skills and gain confidence from serving customers. The shop is classed as a ‘social enterprise’ as profits are ploughed back into the company. Some produce, such as bananas will always have to be bought in, but where they can, Out of the Rut source from within Rutland and on many occasions from Oakham itself. The shop buys surplus allotment and garden produce, most recently stocking seven plum and six apple varieties from the Oakham area. Paying 50p per kilo, it won’t set you up, but supports the fresh, local and affordable ethos, and as ‘Toby’ found out recently, can boost your pocket money! Shop manager Trish Hudson is also keen to keep selling more unusual produce such as beautiful pattypan squashes grown in Loddington, yellow and round courgettes, cape gooseberries and curly endive. It needn’t be the whole room that gets changed...
T
o create a new look in your home for each season without having to do a complete makeover, choose neutral, warm colours you are comfortable with for walls, upholstery etc. and concentrate on trend colours for cushions, throws, lamp shades, rugs and other accessories that can easily be changed per season.
With wallpapers having made a big comeback in the interior world, it is easy to create an interesting feature in a room. A wallpapered wall, chimney breast or alcove can completely transform a room and can easily set the colour trend for your accessories.
Colour trends; 1. Pretty, delicate, yet warm pastels, mixed with dusky plum, deep raspberry, soft blues and grays. 2. Earthy, natural soft hues mixed with deep caramel, chocolate, golds, orange/red and woodland greens. 3. The new blue (duckegg, turquoise) - although blue is normally thought of as a cold colour, accessorised with other colours like rich brown, gold or accent red, it works for a tranquil space. New to the world of Cruises? Wonder if it’s for you? Let us try to answer some of the questions you can find yourself pondering and maybe help you to overcome some objections. It is too formal for me? This is no longer a problem. Some cruises have retained the more formal approach, but many others have a balance with a percentage of formal nights, theme nights and casual nights in the main restaurant but if you prefer there will be at least one buffet restaurant with casual dress. If neither of those cruise types’ appeals to you, you still have the freestyle option, casual dress throughout all restaurants; no need to book, just turn up and eat. Will I be bored when at sea? Whatever your preference, whether you just want to relax and not do a great deal, if you’re in your more senior years and prefer like company, looking for a family cruise or if adventure is your middle name, there is a cruise out there to cover all your needs. The bigger the ship, naturally the wider the choice. A newsletter will be delivered to your cabin every evening, detailing the next day’s programme, so you can join in as much or as little as you like. What about tips? This has been a worry for many first time cruise passengers and some cruise lines are now including tips in the initial cost.
Others give you an option when booking to prepay tips. If you sail on a cruise line that still retains the tips system you will be advised what the standard rate is, this is normally for your cabin steward and restaurant waiter. What money do I need onboard? None. You will be given your personal identification card on embarkation. This is used for all purchases on board and you pay at the end of your cruise. Most cruise lines will provide a bill about around halfway through your cruise just to give you an idea of how your spending is going. All those shore visits, paperwork and disembarking sounds like too much hassle. You are under no pressure to go on any shore trips in fact many people, especially in Europe, have a leisurely breakfast and walk off and take in the local area independently. There will be some destinations where certain formalities are required but, do not worry, if you have booked the tour before boarding much of this will have been done before you even board the ship. “THE SMALLEST capacity petrol engine ever to power an Audi will help A3 Cabriolet drivers feel they’re doing their bit for the environment this year.”
I S F T t e l o i r b a C 3 A New Audi By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist
T
he new A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI has replaced the 1.6-litre MPI model, and uses turbo charging to more than match its output. It boosts combined fuel economy by 9.2mpg to 49.6mpg, and drops CO2 output by 35g/km to 132g/km. That’s pretty remarkable, but what’s even more impressive is that it is quicker and has a higher top speed. Linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, the A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI can reach 62mph from rest in 12.2 seconds, and continues to a top speed of 118mph. That’s an increase of 0.3 seconds and 4mph over the 1.6MPI unit. The engine generates the same 105 PS power output as the 1.6-litre unit it replaces yet it also has an increase in torque over its predecessor.

his petite but impressively robust performer can be combined in the A3 Cabriolet with either standard, Sport (on test here), or S line specification. Standard versions feature a generous equipment list that includes 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and a semi-automatic hood operation. The Sport version that Audi lent me was a lovely little number swathed in rather elegant grey/blue metallic paintwork. It combined features such as larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and sports seats with a fully automatic hood. The car is refreshingly easy to drive and the convertible roof can be operated with a simple touch of a button. A comfortable driving position is effortless to achieve and the car never feels sluggish - in fact it feels as though it gets from 0-62mph much sooner than the 12.2 seconds figure Audi suggests. The A3 even had enough space for my two little children in the back. Despite only having two doors, the front seats slide
forward, allowing ample room to lean in and secure the child seats to their mountings. The only drawback in carrying tots around is fitting all the kit that goes with having a three year old and a 10 month old into the small boot. But at a push I just about got a rather large fold-down pushchair in there, as well as toys, a changing bag and a few small bags of shopping. Getting the pushchair out again was a bit of hassle, but with a few tugs it was manageable. It was all worth it though just to see the children’s faces light up when they realised the car they were in had a roof that could go up and down. The new Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI is an obvious attempt by the German car maker to be greener. But Audi has pulled it off. By replacing a larger capacity engine with a more compact one that delivers better performance, improved economy and healthier emissions is a work of genius. In my opinion it works a treat. The car is bags of fun, and even better, the little A3 undercuts the outgoing version by £490. Can’t be bad!

I have been on employment and support allowance for just over a year. I am feeling a little better and would like to try and gradually return to work. I have been told that I can work for a few hours and keep my ESA. However a friend has told me that because my ESA is based on my National Insurance contributions (because I worked for years), I will lose most of what I earn in reduced housing benefit and council tax benefit. With the extra cost of getting to work I am worried I could end up worse off working and would I really have been better off if I hadn’t paid contributions? A recent change in the regulations means that anyone on incapacity benefit (IB) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) doing what is called ‘permitted work’ will now be able to keep all the money they earn and all the money they get in benefits as long as they stick to the rules and limits on permitted work. The change irons out an injustice in the benefits regulations which discriminated against people like yourself who had worked before becoming too ill or disabled to do so. Under the old rules, people on the means-tested sickness benefits could keep all their earnings from ‘permitted work’ and all their benefit income, while those on the contribution-based versions, but who had no more income or savings than those on the means tested versions of these benefits, were up to £60 a week worse off, simply because in the past they had worked and paid national insurance contributions. The idea of ‘permitted work’ is to gradually allow people on IB or ESA to get back into work mode. But there are strict rules about how long you can do this for, how many hours you can work, and how much you can earn. You can earn £20 per week on an ongoing basis. You can usually only earn more than this for a year but for that year you can earn up to £93 per week. You must work less than 16 hours per week. You need to inform DWP if you are doing permitted work, (and your local council if you get housing benefit and/or council tax benefit), and it may lead to a reassessment of your work capability. If, after a year, you start working more than 16 hours a week, you may be entitled to the disability element of working tax credit. There is a lot of help available to help you get back into work but it can be quite complex.
