Whats On

Hello all. I can’t believe that we are already here with our special Christmas edition and the last one of 2010! It is actually always quite odd saying things like that as I am writing this in November but it will soon be upon us all. I am sure you are all busy getting ready for Christmas Day and deciding upon your menu – why not try our Christmas Pudding recipe on page 26, it is really easy and very tasty. If you are looking for gift inspiration, then we have scoured Stamford for the best buys –see pages 34 &35. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones looking for some winter sun? If so, you must check out our travel section on pages 24&25. This month we have reviews on the latest books and also a great write-up on the Alfa Berera, plus beauty tips and an insight into Swedish massage. So whatever you fancy reading about, the Scene has it covered. If there is something you would like to see in the magazine, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@scenepublishing.co.uk Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy the Stamford Christmas Festival! Official Guinness

World Record Event

Rob Dulieu of Stamford Personal Fitness is going to attempt to beat the world record for holding the ‘Plank’ position, which involves you lying on your elbows and tips of your toes, as straight as a board in a static hold (see picture). The official event will be held at 11.30 am on Stamford High Street. Saturday 4th December. Rob started training for this event earlier this year and 3 months ago achieved 25 minutes 10 seconds, however, the purest form of the exercise (the Guinness version) does not allow you to clasp your hands together and is in a different league in terms of its difficulty, so Rob has been back in training. The reason Rob is doing this is to raise money for charity, and here is his story..... “Some may know that a few years ago my wife (Mandy) was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for which there is no known cure. This disease lowers her immune system, and shortly after being diagnosed she had chemotherapy, staying in remission until earlier this year, where her condition started to deteriorate. The Lymphoma has now worked its way into her blood stream and this development has unfortunately accelerated her condition. Not only has Cancer blighted Mandy, it also took For all your Luxury Beauty Treatments Relax both my Grandfathers, an Aunt and an Uncle - hence my mission to raise as much money and Indulge in the perfect setting as I can for Cancer Research UK. chronograph from Robert Loomes of A Stamford gives so much more than that: a luxury mechanical wristwatch-cum-stopwatch

that is hand built by the man whose name is on the dial; one that is only available from the shop where they are made. Said Robert “To make a chronograph is to fashion a work of art. To make a gift of one is to ensure you will be remembered for ever.” Nobody else in the country makes mechanical chronographs in their own workshops, so this is indeed a rare gift. Each watch is carefully built in his Stamford workshops from scratch, with every wheel, pivot and screw checked, cleaned, polished and lubricated by hand before the movement can be tested. It takes a highly skilled watchmaker the best part of a day just to build the mechanism. Robert works using a Swiss design from the 1940s, once used by Breitling and Omega. The model was long forgotten because it was a labour intensive movement and not suited to modern mass-production techniques. 14

Robert has radically improved the design and made it a thing of beauty. Once completed he fits his unique dial and hands and assembles the whole into the case. Each is then rigorously tested for accuracy and reliability. avid and Sheryl Mcfarlane moved into Church Farm located in Essendine near Stamford a year ago. It is a 17th century farm building that sits in just under 30 acres of grassland, and has been used as a shared venture, with everyone in the community benefitting from the activities and produce. The farm promotes compassionate farming and rare breeds for education - New College Stamford use the farm for their BTEC in animal care practical work, and hope the Equine students will join them in January.

scheme, particularly for children suffering from autism.

The idea of the farm is to promote local food and produce at a time when farming is so dependent on fossil fuels. They use good, old fashioned farm muck to fertilise the fields and nurture the wildlife that lives there such as hares, bats, owls, herons, kingfishers, thrushes and many, many more! David and Sheryl are also in the process of setting up a herapeutic horsemanship

currently owned by foreign investors who are looking to sell to developers. This means that once the short lease is up, all the hard work will be undone and the farm will no longer be available for the public.

Alan’s Nan’s Christmas pudding from The White Hart @ Ufford

4 oz fine breadcrumbs 8 oz of self-raising flour 4 beaten eggs 8oz of suet 8oz of light brown sugar 1 grated carrot 8oz of grated apple

4oz of chopped almonds 8oz of currant 4 oz of chopped apricots 8oz of sultanas 16oz of raisins Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon and one orange

½ a pint of strong beer or stout ½ a pint of barley wine 2 tsp of golden syrup 2 tsp of mixed spice 2 tsp of cinnamon 2 tsp of nutmeg

1. Soak all of the dried fruits in the liquor and fruit juice, cover with a tea towel and leave to soak in a cool dark place over night. 2. Into that, add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well. Chef tips: the best-mixing tools, I find, are your hands! Don’t be afraid, get right down to the bottom of the mixture and turn it though plenty. Don’t forget to make your Christmas wish while your mixing!!! 3. Turn all the mixture out into a large pudding bowl, alternately you can make small individual ones but this will alter the cooking time. 4. Cover the top of the pudding in a greaseproof paper and muslin tied round the top. If you don’t have any muslin you could use an old clean tea towel or a pillowcase. Leave the mixture overnight to rest and all the lovely Christmas flavours to become good friends. 5. Place the pudding in a large saucepan and fill nearly to the top of the pudding bowl with water and cook on a low heat (gas mark 2) for about 12 hours. Smaller pudding will need less time. To check the puddings are cooked, stick a skewer in the middle and if this comes out clean, it’s ready. 6. Serve warm with all those lovely naughty Christmas creams and sauces!!! All you wanted to know about Swedish Body Massage The founder of Swedish body massage was a Dr Per Herik Ling (1776-1838) he was a Swedish medical gymnast. His interest and passion in life was gymnastics which grew into pedagogical, medical, military and aesthetic study. Once Dr Ling completed his degree he went abroad and on his first voyage he became friends with a Chinese fellow calling “Ming” a martial artist and Tui na practitioner who shared his interests. During the first four years of his voyage, Ling received much guidance from his close friend Ming on fighting, exercise and health philosophies that fascinated him for their amazing integration and efficiency. Due to the fact that Ling started to have financial difficulties because of his travelling as well as suffering with rheumatism in all his joints he had to return to Sweden. Once there he took the time to heal himself by applying pressing, pulling and squeezing exercises and manoeuvres he had learned. These techniques started to improve his physical and mental health. Ling was fascinated with how this technique seemed to work with almost everybody. He then began to studying 32

anatomy and physiology and achieved the same level as a doctor. In 1831 Ling was elected a member of Swedish general medical association (svenska la “kcresa” llskapet) In 1835 Ling was elected a member of the Swedish academy and became a titular professor the same year. Johan Georg (1838/1909) studied Dr Ling’s Swedish massage system and developed it further and we now have the following techniques. Effects of treatment Effleurage (long gliding strokes) stimulates and improves general circulation and increases lymphatic flow, removing waste and toxins. The technique helps with soothing sensory nerve endings which helps with relaxation. Petrissage( lifting and manipulating muscles) movements are kneading, picking up, wringing and rolling this technique helps to relieve muscle tension and light nodules, prevents muscle fatigue by removing latic acid/toxin build up in muscles (this helps with cellulite also knows as fatty deposits) The technique relieves muscular aches and pains this helps to aid joint mobility nerve. 01780 783613

Tapotomest/Friction(firm deep circular rubbing movement), which were then and now the basic techniques of Tu ina, an age old Chinese massage, involves cupping, hacking and plucking movements which stimulate nerve endings, increases blood supply, tones slack muscle and revitalises tired muscle. It also helps also to break down adipose tissue. Vibrations (rapidly shaking or vibrating specific muscles) are fine trembling movements which stimulate nerve endings. When the vibrations are coarse they induce relaxation and when gentle they stimulate deeper layers of the skin.So there really is more to a Swedish Massage than meets the eye, and there are many reasons to take the time out and spoil yourself with some much needed quality time. Maxey House Retirement Home

T

he new Health & Social Care Act 2008 comes into force in October 2010 for Care Homes. The new act brings with it many changes in the private health care sector, especially care homes looking after vulnerable adults such as the elderly. Its main principles are to ensure that the safety, welfare, rights, dignity and independence of people is both promoted and protected. With all these changes in mind and so as to comply with the new law, Laura Levin, sole proprietor of Maxey House, located just outside Market Deeping, has implemented a new Executive structure and has appointed Lindsay Morris R.G.N and her company, CMC Consultancy Ltd, to operate the full management of Maxey House along with her colleagues and the existing Maxey House staff. Laura Levin is very confident that this new structure will continue to ensure excellent

standards of care and attention are delivered to the residents whilst continuing to grow the business and enhance the reputation of the home throughout the local community. Laura Levin would like to thank the current staff at Maxey House for all of their hard work, their acceptance of change, their compassion, their overwhelming dedication to the residents and their continued loyalty to the home and herself. Maxey House currently has a limited number of vacancies for new residents, so should anyone be looking for a happy, friendly care home for their elderly relatives, please call in at the home for a viewing. No appointment is necessary unless you would like to see Lindsay in person to discuss the individual needs of your relative.
