rogue traDers, your time is uP! Cowboy tradesmen cost the UK population nearly a billion a year in botched jobs The office of fair trading estimate there are over 9 million disputes between home owners and tradesmen ever y year, a staggering 25,000 ever y day. 7 out of 10 homeowners are unhappy with the level of ser vice they receive from tradesmen. Other statistics show that most of us have had, or know someone who has experienced incidents with ‘cowboy’ tradesmen and 85% of us worr y about the quality of workmanship prior to commissioning them. Thanks to award-winning Peterborough-based company safelocaltrades.com you can now feel safe in the knowledge that when you need a local, reputable and quality trade professional, for both domestic and commercial work, a FREE and EASY one-stop-shop is at your finger tips. safelocaltrades.com protects consumers from cowboys and rogue traders by providing free and easy access to local reputable tradesmen, suppliers and ser vices across the PE Postcode district. All members are CRB checked (they do not have a criminal record), highly recommended, vetted and approved, have agreed to abide by a Ser vice Char ter and will be rated on an ongoing basis; giving you, the consumer,
much needed peace of mind. Award winning director and RSA Fellow Eileen Le Voi says “when looking for a reputable tradesman or ser vice, research has shown that 98% of the population rely on personal recommendations. Choosing a tradesman from a director y is often a lotter y as you never know who you are going to get so don’t take risks with your biggest investment—your proper ty! safelocaltrades.com is
all about bringing ‘word of mouth’ recommendations into the 21st centur y using modern technology and the internet. During the extensive local research carried out by safelocaltrades. com over the past three and half years, we have learnt that there are quite a substantial number of
local trades that consumers would NEVER recommend to anyone. We at safelocaltrades.com also know that there are 100’s of honest, reliable trades in our local area who all deliver an excellent ser vice and we have made it our mission to find them on behalf of the general public; this will restore their faith that not all are bad and will redeem any tarnished reputation that our local trades have been branded with, due to unscrupulous cowboys. If anyone has a favourite tradesman, or supplier that they feel would be a suitable candidate, then please let us know by recommending them on www.safelocaltrades.com”. As par t of our referral scheme, if your recommended person successfully gains Approved Member status, then we will pay you £20! The ser vice covers the entire PE Postcode District and is split into 4 geographical sectors. We only require a maximum of 5 trade professionals for each sector so our message to tradesmen, ser vices and suppliers is “don’t let your competitors get ahead of you, register your interest on the website NOW or you will get left behind. Our goal is to continue to establish the safelocaltrades.com logo as a symbol of QUALITY & TRUST within our local communities. This in turn will give homeowners a muchneeded convenient one-stop-shop of reputable trades and ser vices.”
If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson or are interested in becoming an exclusive member then visit www.safelocaltrades.com or call 0800 014 1832. This logo is your local symbol of trust and quality so look out for members who display it. safelocaltrades.com – make it your first and only choice

Gymnastics in Peterborough The obvious benefit from participating in gymnastics is fitness, but alongside this, the emphasis for all ages is also participation, fun and good sportsmanship. Many children begin their tumbling years with a class in movement, gymnastics or exercise of some form and they do not even realise they are exercising. Gymnastics should be accompanied by warming up, cooling down, and proper stretching to help avoid injury. The correct warm up and stretching routine for your children, is best provided by a skilled and qualified coach. Gymnasts at all levels require physical fitness, balance, coordination, and overall conditioning, but these can be achieved by participating in gymnastics. There is no need to arrive already prepped and trained! High impact exercise like gymnastics can help to build strong muscles and bones and increase bone density that can lessen the chances of developing

osteoporosis later in life. Peterborough can be proud of its sporting facilities and achievements over the years including rowing, athletics, hockey, football, cricket,
squash and most recently cycling. For the past nine years, Peterborough has been the home of Sims Gymnastics Club and for the most recent two years it has been based in a spacious facility in Wainman Road in Woodston. Sims is the only full time dedicated gymnastic facility in Greater Peterborough,

utilising the professional equipment and spring flooring essential for providing bounce and cushioning required and helping to reducing the risk of injuries. Gymnasts from the club have been medallists’ at National schools championships and for several years in a row have been county champions. Sims is the only Peterborough gymnastic club to have girls in County squads representing the county and region. Sims take children into recreational classes in various groups from ages six months to 12 years and currently host classes for over 400 students. Competitive squads are open to everyone by tryout only, both for girls and for boys. A more informal Playgym runs on weekdays for an hour and a half for just £3. Holiday classes and classes for teens and adults are also available as well as a great party venue to wear out your party guests! www.simsgymnastics.com 01733 235003

12th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival To celebrate Chinese New Year, Gable Events has joined with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices to launch the twelfth Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. One of the largest charity dragon boat events in the country, the Festival takes place on Sunday 20th June on the River Nene opposite the Key Theatre with more than 50 crews expected to battle it out over the 200m race course watched by several thousand spectators. Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and the Festival is a re-enactment of a tragic event that took place more than 2,000 years ago in the kingdom of Chu. Legend has it that falsely accused of treason and exiled by jealous rivals in the government, despairing warrior poet, Qu Yuan, threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen paddled out to save the drowning poet and tried to rescue him from vicious fish by beating the water with their paddles. But their attempts failed and every year in Hong Kong a Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival is held as a mark of respect for the fishermen’s frantic efforts and to commemorate the tragic death of Qu Yuan. The dragon boat’s fierce looking dragon’s heads were added later to ward
off evil spirits and, in Hong Kong, special dumplings are eaten to represent the dumplings that were thrown in to the river to stop the fish eating the mighty Qu’s body. According to the Chinese calendar, 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, symbolising great courage, stealth and fearlessness - attributes which competitors will definitely need as the races get underway!
Life-threatened This spectacular event is a fantastic chance for local companies and organisations to promote themselves whilst seeing what makes their competitors tick; no previous experience is required to take part, just plenty of team spirit so why not take up the challenge? The 40’ dragon boats and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. The Festival offers superb family entertainment on land as well as water with activities on the bankside throughout the day. The teams taking part in the racing will be encouraged to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) which is the Festival’s new official charity. EACH is the
children’s hospice service for families in Peterborough and the surrounding area helping life-threatened children and their families with the challenges they face. They do this by providing a range of care in a home-from-home environment at the hospice in Milton, near Cambridge, or in the comfort of their own home. Liz Brinsdon, Corporate Fundraiser at East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), comments, “Having heard what a fantastic local event this is, we are very excited to be the new official charity of the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. Relying as we do on voluntary public support for the majority of our funding, any monies raised at the Festival will help us to provide the one-toone nursing care and support that is so vital to local children and their families.” The team raising the most money for EACH will win the charity trophy and a special Pan Asian buffet lunch kindly donated by floating city centre restaurant, East Restaurant and Bar. And with trophies up for grabs not only for the top fundraisers but also for the top three crews, best-placed mixed crew and the best-dressed - there really is something for every team to aim for!
to make sure your company, club, organisation or group of friends is on the start line in June please call Festival organisers, gable events on 01780 470718 or visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough For further information about the work of east anglia’s children’s hospices, please contact Liz Brinsdon on 01223 205194 or visit www.each.org.uk

Four-piece band, I Only Date Models have, in a short space of time, already supported several great bands and gigged throughout the Midlands. With roots back to Peterborough, IODM took a moment between gigs, rehearsals, work, studies and general life to speak to the City Scene. Who are ioDm? sammy ault: Vocals/guitar michael meadows: Lead guitar tim Bollans: Bass tom Ford: Drums
how did you get together? Sammy, Tim and Tom met at Nottingham Trent University, and Tom used to be in a band with Meadows back home in Peterborough. The band just grew from there really...it was refreshing to be friends first and a band second. We started gigging in May 2009 and have been very fortunate to have been asked to support some great bands, including Iglu & Hartly, Example and Fenech-Soler. We’ve also had the chance to do a live session for the BBC which was awesome. highlight so far… Gigging at Rock City Nottingham is always great as the sound there is
awesome...but I think our best gig was supporting Fenech-Soler. Writing songs… Sammy is the principal lyricist, but as far as the music is concerned, we are all heavily involved. tips & advice Leave it to the professionals! Only kidding……. Don’t rely on Myspace, it’s not the only way to get noticed. The best way to succeed is to have a passion for what you do and be friends before being a band. next gigs Friday 14th May, Met Lounge, Peterborough Saturday 12th June, Jack Wills Varsity Polo Tournament www.myspace.com/ionlydatemodels
Look out for IODM on Facebook, youtube and Twitter, “One Day” is available on itunes.

ocal photographer, John Owen, is working on a project to capture the personalities of sports people playing at grass roots level. Sports people at high levels have their photographs taken regularly and we are all used to seeing their pictures in press and advertising. But there are a whole raft of regular ‘weekend heroes’ that play all types of sport at grass root levels. Some might be semi-professional, some will get paid but the majority of them play for the love of the game. John enjoys portrait photography, taking those pictures of people and showing their character, challenging it may be but that is part of the enjoyment. The project started for John at Kettering RFC. The pictures are taken post game - sweaty and dirty, they aim to show the true character of the game and the people that play them. When the final whistle blows, John takes a number of players and starts photographing them. Later on, details are added about the player from signatures

interVieW What was the first book you read? Probably some daft picture book – but the first book I read which had an impact on me was Black Beauty. I remember throwing the book when it ended – I was sobbing and just so staggered that words on a page could have such a massive effect on the reader. What inspired you to start writing? I had a scholarship all set up…and I was learning my way around my first PC when I found myself writing the opening to the sort of book I wanted to read but couldn’t find in the shops back in 1990. I ditched the PhD and worked part-time and temped for the next four years until I finally struck my first deal. Who is your main influence? My Grandmothers – they’ve both passed on now, but they were very different women and both quite extraordinary in their own right. They had many tales to tell and so much love to give. I miss them still. What are the 3 things you can’t live without? My children. Butter. And horses. ten years from now you will be…. Giving my son’s wannabe girlfriends a good grilling…or else showing them cute baby photos of his bare bum. What is your best memory from your childhood? My fabulous eccentric Grandpa Alfred hiring a Rolls Royce, driving from Birmingham to London to collect me from school then taking me to a posh café where he drew dice on the sugar cubes with a felt tip pen. What is your ‘karaoke song’? Nickleback – This is how you remind me. Where is your favourite place to eat? Krispy Kreme donuts, from the bag, in

Bestselling author of 10 novels, Freya north launches our new books page
reVieWs
Winner of the 2008 romantic novel of the year for Pillow talk, Freya is currently working on her 11th novel. secrets, her most recent novel, is out now in paperback. each month, our Books Page will highlight the best new releases in fiction, factual and children’s books, as well as titles you may have missed and classics you might want to try.
New For March – Quality fiction... Lovers and newcomers by rosie thomas, harpercollins, £12.99 One of my favourite authors, Rosie Thomas has set her new novel in Norfolk. Miranda Meadows, a widow, invites five of her oldest friends to live alongside her. All have reasons for accepting. Initially, they have a great time - generally behaving badly. Soon enough, old attractions resurface alongside new tensions and they discover the clock can’t be put back. Then, building work reveals an Iron Age burial site of a tribal queen - suddenly the outside world wants a piece of their idyllic retreat and as the past is revealed, the future which unfolds is very different to the one they imagined.
Autobiography... smile though your heart is Breaking by Pauline Prescott, harpercollins, £18.99 Come on - who isn’t just slightly inquisitive about what life behind closed doors must be like with John Prescott? He may have compromised his dignity on a number of occasions - but Pauline has always maintained hers. Pregnant at 15 by a married US serviceman, she resisted all attempts to give her son up for adoption. When he was three, she was persuaded it was for his own good and she expected to never see him again. John was a waiter when they met and his ambition to become a union activist meant 8 years at university during which time Pauline supported the family. Then, 40 years after she last saw her son, her world was turned upside down. The press had found him and Pauline was reunited. Warm, moving and at times painfully sad, her autobiography is a good humoured and articulate account of a fascinating life.
What I’m currently reading... skippy Dies by Paul murray hamish hamilton, £18.99 Set in a grand old boarding school with a cast of colourful characters, this is the second novel by Paul Murray. Van Doren and Skippy are two geeks (their hobbies are extreme maths and the concepts of extra terrestrial life). However, when Skippy falls in love with the Frisbee-playing cool chick at the neighbouring girls’ school all hell breaks loose, culminating in a to-the-death doughnut-eating race. Extremely funny, bittersweet and touching. Five go to Billycock hill by enid Blyton hodder children's Books, £4.99 I love reading to my children. Interestingly, nothing quite grabs their attention so totally as Enid Blyton's classic children's adventure stories, first published in the 1950s. Memorable baddies, plenty of cliffhangers and fab picnics, these books
The City Scene

enable our modern kids to really live alongside the Famous Five. They're fun to read - you can't help but polish your vowels and posh up your accent as the action unfolds. Don't go for the modern reissues - buy the edition with Eileen Soper's beautifully detailed drawings.
A Classic You Should Read.... moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe (with an introduction by Freya north) Vintage classics, £5.99 It was an honour to be invited to write an intro to this extraordinary novel. If Defoe can be revered as the godfather of the romp, his spunky protagonist, Moll, is the godmother of feisty literary heroines. The pace is frenzied and the plot outrageous. Our heroine marries every eligible male between Lancashire and Virginia - including her brother. She's a very modern icon - whatever befalls her, she picks herself up, dusts herself down, rearranges her cleavage and rampages off again.

Free Electrical Checks from
Mr. Electric
Local electrician Martin Brown and his team of qualified electricians are offering recession-busting FREE electrical house checks. Martin, the franchise owner for Mr. Electric in Peterborough and Lincolnshire is concerned about the number of electrical-based injuries and deaths in the home. Government statistics show that every year up to 4,000 people are injured and 30 die due to electrical faults in the home. “Electrical dangers in the home are completely avoidable if people use the right experts for the right jobs,” explains Martin. “I hear more and more reports of people either doing their own electrical DIY or using non-approved electricians. The recession means that everyone is looking to save money where they can but the true cost can be people’s lives.” Martin’s “Mr. Electric” FREE house electrical check includes a 45-minute visual assessment of the home focusing on wiring and electric shock risks. “I’m keen to put something back into

the local community and offering my time free of charge to help homeowners better understand any electrical risks or to take comfort from knowing their electrics are in good working order is my investment in a safer future for local residents,” he says. “When working and fitted correctly, the electrics in your home are an everyday godsend. If they’re badly fitted, badly maintained or in need of repair, they can be the biggest risk in the home.” Martin added: “Unlike gas or water, you can’t smell or see electricity. There is no tangible evidence of an electrical fault so I’m asking people to be extra vigilant and fully understand the warning signs and above all, call in an expert.” To contact Martin call 01733 602022 or visit www.electricalsafetycheck.com for information on our FREE Electrical Safety Checks. nature
One of Nature’s little oddities Every now and then nature throws in an oddity it shouldn’t. Variation amongst individuals of the same species of animal or plant is usually confined to just differences in sex and age. For example an adult male Blackbird will look pretty much identical to another adult male Blackbird. But every now and then, nature throws in an oddity it shouldn’t. In early March a completely white bird appeared in my back garden. Now I’m not talking about a pale sort of colour, like a Collared Dove, I’m talking ‘Dazz’ white. I’m talking as white as a Hollywood star’s teeth white. At first only fleeting glimpses were had but eventually it became clear what this bird was; it was a Blackbird. It looked Blackbird shaped, acted like a Blackbird and even called just like a Blackbird… but it was white. It even had the yellow bill and eye-ring confirming it was an adult male but for this individual the black pigments in the feathers were completely absent, a condition known as leucism. Now I have seen Blackbirds with the odd specs of

white in their plumage before, some even with nearly completely white heads but a completely white one was new to me. Naturally I grabbed the camera but photos proved rather hard to obtain. Most Blackbirds are fairly tolerant of humans. We even have a pair building a nest in the hedge at the bottom of our garden, which boarders next door’s busy path way. This bird however is rather shy. At first I thought the other Blackbirds were chasing it from our garden but having spent some time watching it, it became clear that the other Blackbirds weren’t really bothered by it. A couple of males had a scrap over our back garden and with all the food we supply them with, who can really blame them, but they completely ignored the other male present- the white one. It’s almost as if they don’t quite realise it is the same species as them! So if the locals aren’t upsetting it, what is making it so camera shy? Well I can only guess that this dude actually knows it is white and therefore shines out like a beacon for passing predators. The reason I thought other birds were picking on it at first was because every time they flew up it would fly off, but now it seems clear it is just fleeing ‘just in case’, as it feeds alongside other birds happily. This bird’s instinct has reacted to it’s own genetic curve-ball by making more cautious about hanging out in the open and hanging around when those around it are flying off. Undoubtedly without this instinct it wouldn’t have lived to reach adulthood as any passing Sparrowhawk would have seen it from outer space, let alone from half a mile up! So what will happen now with our white Blackbird? Will it stay? I don’t know; it’s encouraging that it has turned up in early spring. Who knows it might even breedwould be interesting to see the outcome of that. All I know is that nature does produce oddities and these make it worth looking out the kitchen window once and a while.

more than just numbers….new business success When everything else is stripped away, accountancy is about numbers. Fledgling accountancy firm,Winham Hughes needed to stand out from the rest, Sally Winham and Paul Hughes had to offer something extra. ‘More than just numbers’ was a phrase they hit on very quickly as it’s about providing a full accountancy and taxation service and then going several steps further. Facing redundancy following the closure of Baker Tilly’s Peterborough Office, Sally & Paul realised their passion in their profession was more than just those numbers but was about building relationships with clients, understanding them and their business. A year ago,Winham Hughes opened for business in modern, purpose-built offices in Commerce Road, Lynch Wood, Peterborough, which were secured for them by Barker Storey Matthews. Starting Winham Hughes in the middle of the deepest recession for a generation was, says Paul, "a calculated risk". "We were nervous but we had a solid background we're accountants, we'd done the maths!" Paul thinks businesses in Peterborough have weathered the recession relatively well. "People have worked hard to reduce costs to save jobs and survive," said Paul. "As the
economy picks up we will see fitter, leaner businesses in better shape for the future." "Local knowledge is a valuable asset our clients can call on. Peterborough is an interesting place to operate covering the entire spectrum of business from starts up’s to regional offices of multi- nationals. We can add value to our client’s business
by helping them identify potential pitfalls – our Management Information service for instance gives real time figures which we can overlay on our local knowledge to create an accurate picture which helps forecasting and planning”. 01733 234945 or visit www.winhamhughes.co.uk

Green can be mean motoring
In a world obsessed with green credentials, it seems some eco-mentalists, when commuting round town, egotistically grasping their hessian shopping bags, actually look back to check if they have left a carbon footprint. A combination of government campaigning and social misunderstanding have led to the performance car becoming public enemy number one, (despite never even taking a certain Mrs. Bridge for a ride.) In response, car manufacturers have turned to alternative drive-trains, the most popular being hybrid systems, which combine a relatively low powered petrol unit being used in conjunction with a torque vectoring electric motor to deliver extremely low carbon emissions. In an almost comedic fashion, Hollywood’s elite, slip out of their SUV, with a thirst to match the late Oliver Reed, into their Toyota prius, a dull, unimaginative and completely soulless machine. It is not that low emissions and efficiency are a negative for me, the problem lies in this image, that in order to be green a sacrifice must be made. Recent developments have demonstrated that ‘green can also be mean’. The Tesla roadster carries out a 0-60 sprint in less time than an Aston Martin DBS, the Wrightspeed X1, a wholly electric car with zero emissions is faster than a Ferrari Enzo. Admittedly this technology is simply being used in high end, lightweight performance cars, that resemble little more than a piece of scaffolding stuck to an engine, which is why when Ford; a name synonymous with boy racers, for the iconic RS line, shocked the motoring world when alluding to the fact that the next generation focus RS was going to be >
motoring
a, dare I say it, ‘hybrid’. The current RS, acclaimed for its ability to ameliorate dynamic handling and blistering midrange acceleration, in an all encompassing practical package, thanks to its revolutionary revoknuckle suspension system, is the 22nd incarnation of the Ford RS brand, which began with the Escort RS1600 in 1970. This raucous machine has set new standards in power delivery through the front wheels, a combo which usually ends up in a tree being redecorated with a splash of bumper and a lump of exhaust. With a realistic combined cycle delivering a reported 18.1 mpg and a CO2 emissions figure being conservatively measured at 225g/km, the car is simply outdated in a real world environment, not only from an environmental point of view, but due to government legislation, the car barely misses the highest tax band (one years tax being £550) and running costs with services and petrol included are nothing short of ridiculous. Given that the idea behind the high performance hatch back is primarily bargain basement performance, it may be that ford, in speculatively pitching the ‘performance hybrid’ have paved the way for performance which escapes the tyranny of government taxation. The mk III Focus will provide the platform for the futuristic performance crossbreed. Furthering the Kinetic design initiative, the third rendition of Ford’s most successful production car ever, although presently little more than conjecture, the RS is expected to boast a 2.0 EcoBoost
direct-injection turbo, replacing the coveted 2.5 litre V5 Turbo which is a tuned version of the T5 unit used in all ‘hot’ Volvos. The upshot is similar performance but with significantly reduced carbon emission. The unit will mate to a 95 bhp electric motor co-developed with Peugeot, driving the rear wheels. The combined power should match the 300 bhp of the current model but will allow for torque to be directed to the rear wheels from 0 rpm allowing for smoother power delivery. Regenerative technology will also feature with braking resistance providing power for the electric drive train and start stop technology will be lifted from the rest of the ford Econetic range to deliver even more efficient emissions. Expect further refinement coupled with a 5 second 0-60 time. Rivals such as the Golf R, Leon FR and Megane Sport Tourer, will continue to suffer the rigorous taxation that come with petrol powered performance, whilst the focus will drop into a category including much smaller cars, only producing a sea breeze like 150 g/km of carbon dioxide. So it seems in the not so distant future we may find ourselves in the local Sainsbury’s car park donating guilt free, and while protestors may carry on their misguided onslaught against the car before being transported back in their gas guzzling camper van to their compost heap, it seems the performance car really does have a future after all. by Wesley thompson
eagle Business Park bucks the trend Whilst the general word on the street is that business is tough, and we see many empty shops units on the high street and commercial units locked up for sometime, it is great to see a local business park bucking this trend. Eagle Business Park in Yaxley launched in the summer of 2009 and has seen exceptional levels of interest, despite the apparent slow market. Seizing the opportunity to develop the site whilst materials and labour prices have been low has meant that a cost effective design and build package has been

The Hyundai ix35 is worthy of your consideration When Hyundai launched its Tuscon in 2004, you could count its direct rivals on the fingers of two hands. Back then, the market for compact 4x4 vehicles hadn't yet gone supernova and buyers interested in this type of vehicle had a comparatively easy task deciding which model to plump for. Hop in your Tardis and fast forward to 2009, the year that the Tuscon's replacement, the Hyundai ix35 was unveiled. Suddenly, sock removal is essential for anyone attempting to assign a digit to all the various compact 4x4 contenders. If you include the growing cluster of crossover models that split the difference between 4x4 and family hatchback, you'd need another pair of hands altogether. To stand out in this crowded marketplace, the ix35 will need to be special. Not all ix35 models will be four-wheel-drive. As has increasingly become the case with crossovers and compact 4x4s designed mainly for road use, the entry-level ix35s will be front-wheel-drive only. This means the extra traction to help you out in slippery conditions is lost but all ix35s still have the extended ground clearance to stop them coming to grief on speed humps and high kerbs. The 2WD versions also bring fuel efficiency benefits. The size of the ix35 places it in the middle of the compact 4x4 class. It's around 10cm longer than a Nissan Qashqai but smaller than the larger compact 4x4s like the Honda CR-V and Chevrolet's Capitva. It retains the elevated ride height whether customers choose two or four driven wheels, so getting in and out should be straightforward as should loading. Decent head and legroom in the back make this a bona fide family car and the build is as sturdy as recent Hyundai efforts have led us to expect. The engine range available on the ix35 is usefully diverse. A pair of 2.0-litre units, one petrol and one diesel head up the range but Hyundai has big hopes for smaller engines it's offering with the car. A 1.6-litre petrol unit and a 1.7-litre diesel look set to be big sellers thanks to low running costs
The City Scene
01778 345875
and affordable up-front pricing. The 2WD models will bring efficiency savings over the 4x4 ix35 models and the two smaller engines in particular look to be solid performers with regard to running costs. Emissions of 149g/km for the 1.6-litre petrol model and 139g/km for the 1.7-litre diesel are good going for a compact 4x4. Part of the credit for the parsimony of the ix35 can be laid at the door of Hyundai's ISG Idle Stop and Go technology that turns off the vehicle's engine when it's standing still to save fuel. The market for compact 4x4 vehicles has certainly undergone some changes over recent years, the biggest single factor being the huge increase in the number of different models that are vying for the attention of consumers. As Hyundai's representative in this increasingly influential sector, the ix35 has a lot riding on it and it looks to be yet another mid-sized 4x4 that's worthy of consideration.
