Behind the scenes Hi all, how have you all been since last month? Mag update: Well I can’t believe we are on the 7th issue of the City Scene!! Where has the time gone? And how much the magazine has changed in that short space of time, it looks like a little piece of art now. All systems are go go go now at the Scene HQ onto the NEW Wedding Ecene coming out in February..... then, we plan for world domination!!!! Well after Christmas and the drunken New Years Eve party!!! I would say the LBD is due an airing but I don’t think mine counts as L, nor has it ever been, it’s more like XXXXXL, but who cares, more room for pudding if you can actually breathe in it!! House update: things are still going on, electrics are first fixed, stairs are in, plaster board is up, just got the plumbing to do. That’s going to hurt ‘cause that’s the most expensive job! Then, the bit I’m most looking forward to, is the plastering! You’ll all be invited for a white themed

painting party with food and drinky poos. I was thinking we would be in for Christmas, and mentioned that to the BF and he fell apart laughing and asked “Do you mean Christmas 2015?” I did think that was a bit harsh so we are aiming for my b’day. (March 17th if you didn’t know!) What’s happening in this edition? We have heaps of stuff in this issue with the run up to Christmas, have a look at our ‘Essential Shopping Guide’ on pages 48 & 49, plus winter fashion pages – 46 & 47. If you want to find out about advent and Christmas Services at the Cathedral, we have them listed on page 55, as well as lots of other events in your area. Our Teen and Family Scene pages are proving to be very popular, as many readers have written in with comments and suggestions. Don’t forget to log on to our website www. thescenemagazine.co.uk and have a look at our other magazines, to see what’s happening in Stamford, Deeping, Bourne and Rutland.

SAVE TIME, HELP THE ENVIRONMENT, AND FEEL GOOD THIS CHRISTMAS! If the thought of writing Christmas cards for all of your work colleagues leaves you feeling less than ‘full of the Christmas spirit’, then Sue Ryder Care has the solution.
Why not write just one card for everyone and donate the money you save to help others? This is what fundraisers at local charity Sue Ryder Care - Thorpe Hall Hospice are encouraging people to do. Running for the seventh year, the Sue Ryder Care team have been busy kicking off their ‘Christmas Card Appeal’ by sending out details and packs to local businesses. The Christmas Card Appeal packs include a selection of cards for you to write your message on, a tree for you to hang your cards on, and donation envelopes. So, when everyone in your workplace takes part this makes a wonderful centrepiece bearing all of their Festive messages Last year’s appeal raised more than £5,000 and fundraisers are hoping to beat that total this year. For more details about the Christmas Card Appeal or to sign your company up please contact Michael Clarke at michael.clarke@suerydercare.org or call 01733 330060. www.suerydercare.org

LEADERSHIP AND PUPIL ATTAINMENT PRAISED AT HAMPTON HARGATE PRIMARY Hampton Hargate Primary School is a happy and harmonious school which has made great strides according to government Ofsted inspectors. Inspectors visited the school on Hargate Way in Peterborough for two days in September 2010 and rated it good overall with good capacity for sustained improvement. Good ratings were awarded to pupils’ achievement and their enjoyment of learning, the extent to which pupils feel safe, their behaviour and the quality of teaching. The school’s happy and harmonious community was praised, as well as the care and support pupils receive. Pupils also have a good understanding of a variety of cultures overseas and show interest and respect for different people. School leaders and managers were praised for showing strong teamwork. NEW PLAY AREA DESIGNED BY LOCAL YOUNGSTERS OPENS IN DOGSTHORPE Youngsters in Dogsthorpe have seen their ideas come to fruition as the play area they helped to design has opened. Peterborough City Council enlisted the help of children at Fulbridge School to revamp the play area on Bluebell Fields. The youngsters were asked to come up with ideas of what they would like to see in the
new facility and chose from the designs which officers put to them. Youngsters can now enjoy a wide range of equipment including a multiplay unit; a treehouse with slide; a basket swing; gyro spiral roundabout; aeroskate unit and a hurricane rotating swing. The swings which were in the original play area remain.

The Italian job!
Anna Ruggiero soaks up some Italian culture right here in the city! Sunday 17 October 2010 saw Peterborough City Centre come alive with the colours red, green and white! Yes, it was Italian Day in Peterborough and the streets were filled with good food, good wine and cheer! The festival, in its second year, is organised by Peterborough City Council in partnership with the Italian Community Association. Last year saw the 60th anniversary of our Mediterranean friends setting up home on English soil, hence the festival was born. It was such a success that Carmela Cocozza repeated the affair this year and it looks like it could be an annual event. “It was great to see the Italian culture come together in the city, the day was a huge success and I am looking forward to many more years of festival fun.” beams Carmela. The day included a fine mix of market stalls where you could purchase all things Italian. From oils, to cheeses, this was the day to indulge! Ann and Gelsomino Caprio who own The Cherry Tree pub in Woodston were serving up delicious Pasta e fagilio and a free tipple of schnapps. Riva had a stall which served up delicious meat balls from a sizzling pan along with lasagne and cannelloni. Papa Luigi held a pizza eating competition, which needless to say proved very popular and they raised £500 for the Mayors charity fund. Co-owner Sebastian Scibelli said. “We were proud to take part in
10
the festival once again and would like to thank everyone for their hard work.” Another high point of the day was the numerous shows taking place
on the stage in the Cathedral Square. Italian musicians flew over from Puglia in Italy, which included Aldo Maglietta e Euroquartet featuring the tenor Angelo Demaio. A hair show which was directed by Pep Pasqualino from Image International in Spalding and Tony Manganiello from Hair Xclusive in Peterborough was spectacular! As was the live cut on stage, which included 30 models and stylists from both salons. Tu Danse also treated us all to a magnificent performance.
NOVEMber 2010 | Email: info@scenepublishing.co.uk
A dazzling show was seen by Sbandieratori dei Beorghi e Sestieri Fiorentini. They flew in from Florence on the Saturday and had us all watching in amazement with a fantastic display of flag throwing. The show was breath taking and I could see why they had been chosen to open a world cup game back in 1974! The magical day was then finished off with a fireworks display and lots of happy faces. It was a great family day enjoyed by many and I for one can’t wait to do it all again next year! Using a silk Pillow At night time your skin repairs itself and it needs the chance to breath, naturally. Allegedly using a silk pillow case can stop your face from drying out and protect it from developing more lines or deeper creases! Silk contains proteins and amino acids that are identical to those found in the skin. It also reduces bed head for those of you that toss and turn in your sleep and wake up with bird nest hair! Maybe it’s worth a try?
New Accessorize Cosmetics Collection I’m loving the new Accessorize cosmetic collection starting from an affordable £3. It’s available in stores an online at www.accessorize.com. My favourites are the Baked Bronzers and the nail varnish collection. Why not buy them as cute stocking fillers…
Treatment of the month:
Elemis - Visible Brilliance Facial (RRP £65) When Elisa Perna the salon director offered me an Elemis facial promising instant visible brilliance, with elasticity improved by 28% and moisture levels by 38% after just one treatment, it sounded like a winner. After being asked to change to my underwear and lie under a cosy duvet the experience began. It included a lavender-infused compress and a Japanese camellia-oil facial massage, followed by a gentle
massage of the head, feet, arms, hands and shoulders. The heart of the treatment is two face masks: the Elemis anti-ageing formula, which regenerates cells and improves hydration, and another chosen for your individual skin requirements.
After the 1hr and 15 minutes of selfindulgent luxury, my skin was feeling moisturised, soft and smooth, I felt completely relaxed. I would definitely recommend Elisa’s Elemis facial, especially if you haven’t had one before. Experience rating: 9/10

Once applied, the lashes are water resistant meaning you can shower, swim, sweat or cry and sleep without worry. ntry” u o C e n O In d rl o W “ a South Africa – Truly I have just returned from a holiday in South Africa with my better half and her mum and partner. For the latter couple it was their first taste of this magnificent country whereas I have probably been to South Africa in excess of 50 times and yet it never ceases to amaze and excite me!! South Africa is frequently described as a “world in one country”, a description so fitting as it really does offer something for everyone - sophisticated and cosmopolitan cities are a stone’s throw from bush wilderness, rugged deserts, unspoilt beaches, towering mountain ranges, stunning scenery, magnificent lakes and rivers, plus an exceptional variety of animal, bird and plant life. As well as enormous diversity, the country has been shaped by the historic hands of many races, creeds and nationalities and it is also gifted with a temperate climate. Flanked by two oceans, Mother

Nature has been allowed a free hand and she has seized the opportunity. Our trip started in the town of Hermanus, recognised as the best landbased whale watching destination on the planet. The southern right whales come into the bays off the coast of the town from June to December and they can be viewed by boat, plane or from the shoreline. The town itself is quaint and is worthy of a couple of days of exploration. Accommodation options vary from quality boutique guest houses and “B&B’s” to luxurious 5-star hotels.
NOVEMber 2010 | Email: info@scenepublishing.co.uk
From Hermanus we ventured to a new game reserve called Gondwana, located inland from Mossel Bay, the official starting point of the famed “Garden Route”. The 11,000 hectare reserve holds the distinction of being the only Fynbos reserve in the world that is home to free roaming “big 5” wildlife (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo) as well as a variety of other game. The reserve offers breathtaking scenery with endless rolling hills and stunning mountain views as far as the eye can see. The fynbos (fine bush) plant kingdom is unique to this part of
the world with the most commonly known species being the Proteas and Ericas, which grow in abundance throughout the reserve. Activities include game drives in open vehicles, bush walks to discover the plant life, horseback safaris and mountain biking. Luxurious accommodation and superb cuisine complement the experience and without doubt this is a reserve that has a bright future. We then headed back in a westerly direction, along the scenic route 62, to the wine and brandy producing region of the Robertson Valley where we stayed at a superb little hotel called Mimosa Lodge. Mimosa sits in the centre of the small village of Montagu and provides the perfect base from which to explore the many excellent wine estates of the region. The property is owned by a wonderful South African couple, Fida & Bernard Hess, with Bernard being a Swisstrained chef of note – so be prepared to add inches to the waistline if you ever get the chance to stay here!! After a couple of days of enjoying superb cuisine and quality wines at a number of the wonderful wine estates, we headed to Cape Town for a 5-night stay at the 5-star Cape Royale Hotel. The hotel is perfectly positioned in Green Point, opposite the new World Cup stadium and just a few minutes from the V&A Waterfront and the city center. The property offers a range of luxury suites ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom and all of the amenities and facilities you
would expect from a first-class hotel. Cape Town itself is a superb city with something for everyone. There is really so much to do in and around the city that even 6 days is not enough
As a destination South Africa will appeal to most travellers including: honeymooners and romantics; thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies; explorers and travellers; plus avid safari
time! With the iconic Table Mountain as the backdrop to the city, visitors will explore and experience beautiful beaches, a fascinating history, stunning coastal scenery, superb shopping opportunities, a pot-pourri of cultures and races, excellent restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. From Cape Town we headed north to “safari country” but I will cover this portion of our trip in another issue. There are many areas of South Africa that are worthy of a visit, but do not be misguided into trying to see it all in one holiday. Whilst it is easy to combine most areas it is worth taking your time as it is a country best explored at a leisurely pace. It has some amazing natural sights and a sophisticated tourist infrastructure which makes for an easy-going and unforgettable holiday of discovery. The standards of accommodation are generally very high and vary from intimate and extremely comfortable guest houses through to world-class hotels and superb safari camps and lodges.

Property Law with ANB Law
Q A
Can a landlord insist upon the tenant providing a rent deposit?
Yes, this is very common and is used as security against non-payment and also to ensure that any damages that may occur by the tenant are financially covered. The landlord can ask rent deposit of 6-12 months, though 6 month rent deposit is more common, but equally the landlord may be willing to agree on a 3 month rent deposit.
Q A
Can a landlord insist upon the tenant providing a guarantor?
Yes, in particular where the landlord is unsure as to the financial strength of the tenant. Effectively, a guarantor guarantees that the tenant will fulfil its obligations to the landlord, and failing thereof, the guarantor will assume full responsibility.
Q A
Is acting as a guarantor a good idea?
Acting as a guarantor can sometime prove to be quite an onerous obligation, as usually, guarantors do not generally benefit from taking on the role, but may well find themselves responsible on lease terms where the tenant defaults. If you require a guarantor, you must ensure they are totally aware of the situation and what is expected from them. If you would like further information or advice about property leasing, please contact ANB Law directly on 01733 565900. ANB are offering half hour advice free of charge to all Scene readers.

CONSERVE ENERGY
Q A
On is on, but is off really off?
When we are using TVs, computers, game stations and other electronic goods in the home there is no confusion in our minds when the item is on, but when not in use we turn it off, right? Well not exactly. We tend to leave large numbers of home and office appliances on standby rather than switching them off at the mains socket. Standby means that the appliance is not actually off but rather in a state of readiness for action. Therefore it is using power all the time – day and night . In fact it is estimated that appliances in ‘standby mode’ consume approx. 7% of all electricity in the average home and by turning them off, a typical saving of £40 per year can be made. To make things easier groups of appliances such as a TV, DVD, CD player can be set up to work from one extension lead so that there is only one ‘master switch’ to turn off at night while a Digital box can be powered from a separate socket so that recordings can continue as and when required. Alternatively use a standby saver, of which various types exist, that help make it easier to turn off and start up multiple appliances at once without leaving them in their standby modes. Also if you are not actually charging your phone remember to remove your phone charger from the socket or switch it off at the socket as if you leave it switched on it will continue to use power with or without your phone attached.

My 21 year old son has just started working as a waiter at a local cafe and I’m worried that he’s not being paid a reasonable amount. How can I find out?
We will be spending the winter months in warmer climes so what can we do to keep our property in good order for when we return in the spring?
Q A
Your son should be being paid at least £5.93 an hour under National Minimum Wage rules. As of 1 October 2010 that’s the new adult rate and the adult rate now starts when the worker is aged 21 years old instead of 22. Also from 1 October, an apprenticeship rate of £2.50 an hour was introduced that should help many others your son’s age. This means that an apprentice who is:- aged under 19 will be entitled to the new apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage (£2.50 per hour) - aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship will be entitled to the new apprentice rate of £2.50 per hour. After that, they are entitled to the normal rate of minimum wage for their age. From 1 October, the rates are: £5.93 if you’re 21 or over £4.92 if you’re 18-20 £3.64 if you’re 16-17. You can get more information and support by visiting www.direct.gov.uk/payandworkrights or calling the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368. Information on workplace rights can also be found on the Citizens Advice website adviceguide.org.uk , along with contact details for your nearest CAB.

Check the roof is fully watertight. Replace any slipped or missing tiles. Remove any vegetation from masonry. Roots can cause damp penetration. Remove any rubbish from roofs, gullies and gutters. Look for moss or staining on rainwater pipes, especially around the joints. Make sure that drains are clear. Any blockage can lead to water backing up and spilling out. Cut back vegetation around the perimeter of your property as air needs to circulate around the outside. Ensure ground levels are at least two brick courses below internal floor level to reduce the chances of penetrating or rising dampness. Think about run-off areas around your property and the surrounding area: the road gullies, ditches, culverts and streams. These are the responsibility of local authorities but they don’t know of blockages from old tyres or shopping trolleys unless somebody reports them. Check that you have adequate insurance cover Make sure somebody who has access to the house knows how to turn the water off and who to call in the event of rising water in or around your home.

FINDING A SCHOOL
Q A
Which School? How Do We Choose?
Choosing a school is not easy, but the key to success lies in achieving the correct match for each particular child. League tables and published statistics may give a guide to academic achievement, but reading a menu doesn’t give you the flavour! Parents and pupils need to visit a school; talk to staff and soak up the atmosphere. Open Days are useful showcases, but a school which welcomes parents and pupils on a normal working day should be visited. One child in a family might be perfectly matched to his or her school, but that is not to guarantee that a second child will flourish in the same way. As a community, each school will have its own ethos, values and culture; in education there is no ‘one size fits all’. The size of a school is a factor for some parents. Some children flourish in the vibrant atmosphere of a large school, where others need a smaller environment where they will be well known and taught in smaller classes and are ideal for pupils who need to build confidence in order that they can achieve their full potential. The choice of an Independent School, Comprehensive or Grammar School is another choice to make. Again, the only way to make a decision about a school is to visit and to ask questions. It surprises some parents that Independent school fees may often be paid on a monthly basis and many schools offer scholarships and bursaries. Independent schools do have their entrance examinations, but in some schools these are diagnostic tests rather than being of the pass or fail kind in the Grammar Schools.

What is NEST? From October 2012, employers will have to start automatically enrolling employees into a National Employment Savings Trust pension. Workers earning more than £7,475 a year will be automatically enrolled in NEST if their company doesn’t have its own scheme. Until 2016, workers will put in a minimum of 1% of their salary, their employer a minimum of 1% and the Government will ‘contribute’ in the form of tax relief. In October 2016, contributions rise to 5%, including 2% from the employer. In October 2017 the level will be 8% (3% from the employer). Initial annual contributions will be capped at £3,600 (at 2005 earnings levels). Lump sum contributions will be allowed so long as they do not breach the contribution cap of £3,600 at 2005 prices. Members may contribute to their pot even during periods when they are not employed. Savers will have to pay a 0.3% annual charge on their pension pot but will also see 2% of each contribution they make disappear in ‘temporary’ charges. Savers can invest in social, environmental and ethical funds, as well as branded funds. For those who do not make a specific choice, there will be a ‘default fund’.

Gluten FREE Fish & Chips now available at Linfords of stanground
Does opting out make sense? Workers will have the right to opt out. But with tax relief and your employer paying in to your pension on your behalf, why would you? As the Government is set to scrap means-testing and introduce a universal state pension unaffected by private savings, you shouldn’t be left at a disadvantage by NEST.
Gluten Free batter is available on Wednesday evenings between 4 – 8pm.

Christmas Packages With Christmas just around the corner, the Talbot Hotel is now open for bookings on a variety of packages during the holiday season, which includes parties and luxury 3 night breaks.
The Talbot Hotel in Oundle: A True Historical Treasure By Clare Stubbs The 17th century Grade 1 Listed Talbot Hotel is set within the popular market town of Oundle and has welcomed both new and regular visitors. More recently, it has become well established as a popular choice of wedding venue where the hotel’s beautiful surroundings and unique Elizabethan styling is greatly appreciated by those who prefer more traditional architecture. No-one can dispute the building’s level of grandeur, with its high oak beams, transom windows and welcoming open fires but it is the rich and lengthy history that proves to be the main attraction; especially stories involving some of the ghosts that are said to be frequent guests at the hotel. With so many different sightings being reported, an investigation was soon carried out by the Haunted Britain team in 2007.
Early Days The origins of the hotel date back as far as 638 AD (making it one of Oundle’s oldest known establishments

still in existence today) and during this time, it was known as a hospitium, where monks provided both food and shelter to travelling pilgrims. The Talbot Hotel was later re-built in 1626 by then owner William Whitwell who acquired and used stone ruins from nearby Fotheringhay Castle.

in 1587. It wasn’t long after the execution that James I ordered the castle to be demolished and a few items were subsequently purchased and installed into the re-built Talbot Hotel. These included windows, stones and the impressive oak staircase which Mary had reportedly walked down, shortly before her execution. Guests have regularly heard a woman crying and one visitor mentioned hearing sobbing coming from room number 5, even though it was empty at the time and this incident reputedly occurred on the anniversary of Mary’s death. A regular sighting is of a woman in a long white dress that has been seen standing on the staircase or by the conference room window. Many believe that this is the ghost of Mary, Queen of Scots.
The Drumming Well Ghosts of the Talbot Hotel There have been many reports of different ghostly apparitions either within the hotel or its grounds but the most common sighting is believed to be that of Mary, Queen of Scots who was executed at Fotheringhay Castle
Known as Drumming Well Yard, the passageway leads directly off the main street and up towards the back of the hotel. The well (which can still be seen today) is said to have had loud and unmistakeable sounds of drumming
This is the way to coming from within celebrate Christmas in it, prior to some of style and you can always history’s biggest expect a warm welcome events taking place. at the Talbot Hotel. It was reported and later documented that a drum beat was heard days before the Great Fire of London broke out and ahead of the deaths of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II.
Happy Hunting The sheer amount of history surrounding this ancient building is a major selling point and a lot of visitors appreciate both the opportunity and appeal of staying in a place that has true historical significance. In October 2008, the Talbot Hotel reached number 3 on the Guardian’s list of Top 10 Haunted Houses in the UK. So, if you are feeling brave and fancy a bit of ghost hunting then this might be the ideal opportunity. I would definitely recommend giving it a go and see if anything goes bump in the night!

Caped crusader! Capes..... Say the word, and images of masked superheroes mid-flight are what immediately pops into many people’s minds. But capes and cloaks have existed, in one variety or another, through much of our known human history. The cape is back on the agenda as one of the major 2010 fashion trends, so make sure you get one for graceful glamour. Firstly, let’s clear this up: A cape in the broader sense is pretty much any form of outerwear that opens at the front, and has no sleeves - usually with slits for the arms instead, whereas a cloak is similar only generally longer - typically mid-calf but often as long as ankle-length. Cloaks tend to be completely sleeveless; rather wrapping around as an outerwear garment. Taking inspiration from the loose cocoon styles of the 1920s, through to the fur bubble capes and stoles of the 1940s and 50s; nothing says classic elegance like a vintage cape, or For rock-chic styling with a gothic edge go for flowing black cloaks or leather capes. The cape presents the opportunity to have fun with an outfit, so just go with it! And shoes? Well, they’re just gorgeous: block heeled and

‘It’ clothes for that ‘It’ coat If you’ve got your hands on the ‘It’ coat of the season, the fun and functional Cape, then you’ll need some ‘It’ clothes to go with it and keep you looking fabulous. For the day, elegant trousers and ankle boots look great in the

workplace or just out-and-about on the town; wear skinny jeans and brown boots for a more casual feel or embrace the French and wear camel trousers (from Next and Topshop) and grey pixie boots or brown brogues to channel the ‘geek-chic’ that is wearable at any age. For the evening, the Cape coat is sophisticated, fresh and classy, so you can pretty much wear it with anything. Depending on where you’re heading, a pencil dress in black or navy is a must-have; a scoop neck if you’re younger and shoulder-enhancement if you’re slightly older, but still glamorous, of course! Make sure it hugs all the right places, and if you’re a curvy woman then get a dress with detailing around the chest to draw the eye up. If you’re going out clubbing, then get sassy with a tube-skirt in black and over-the-knee boots, but beware, if you’re not blessed with legs like Naomi Cambell, then the outfit can be changed to black skinny jeans and grey calf-length boots. So, now there’s no excuse to go out there this winter and not look hot!

Irritating Skin Problems for Pets Discovering your pet with some form of skin problem can become a very irritating condition for your pet to endure if not dealt with within a reasonable time. Some skin complaints can be quite straightforward to deal with but there are some skin conditions that require careful diagnosis by a qualified vet. The most common skin irritation is the flea epidemic and when your animal has them they will scratch and bite those areas affected. Of course not only are the fleas living within the animal’s fur but also in your furniture and carpets and that is why it’s important to vacuum your house. There are various veterinary treatments available to treat this, but as always, there is a more natural approach. By using a flea comb and brushing through the animal’s fur you will find plenty of debris. Any black debris found I would moisten it and if it turns red then it is flea poo from the blood they have sucked. If the skin is red and sore then you can treat this with Silver Shield Gel. For on-going flea control, you could also give garlic tablets crushed up in their food or give it to them orally. Another good method is to use Tea Tree Oil. Dilute it to
suit and use a suitable bottle and spray onto the fur. Fleas will hate this and leave the host (i.e. the animal). Alternatively, we make our own flea spray with various essential oils that is very effective for killing fleas. There are many other causes of skin irritations that are not so straightforward such as Alopecia, the loss of fur in a particular area which can be due to hormonal changes within the animal or for psychological reasons i.e. due to trauma or animal anxieties. There are also sensations in the skin causing the desire for the animal to scratch and may cause self bleeding as well as the abnormal excretion of sebum that makes the skin and fur appear very oily. Parasites such as mites not only live on the skin but some varieties can burrow in to the skin creating a lot of irritation. A build up of bacteria in the skin can create pus, skin lesions such as scabs or sores. Ring worm is a fungal disease that can occur in both cats and dogs and in its most obvious form, ringworm appears as circular areas of hair loss with active fungal infection around the edge of the lesion and can cause severe inflammation. Food allergies are another cause of itchy skin irritations resulting from allergic reactions to certain types of food groups. This is not so easy to diagnose other than limiting the animal’s diet to one source of protein and one carbohydrate to determine the cause. DVD’s - Hot Tub Time Machine I know this film has been out for quite a while now, but I think I should review it anyway, purely because it has the strangest story line ever, but they managed to pull it off and it’s generally a really good and funny film. The stupidity of it all is hilarious and the final scene of the film will definitely be leaving a smile on your face. Game of the Month It’s finally here…. I’m not a major fan of the Call of Duty games, but I think that Call of Duty: Black Ops is going to be absolutely insane! It is the seventh main installment of the Call of Duty series and is currently being developed by Treyarch. The confirmation of the games development was leaked by David Kim, a senior animator at Treyarch, in May 2009. Black Ops is said to be set in various locations, including Vietnam and Cuba, and judging from weaponry and dates given in the trailer, it is set between 1960 and 2010. It is planned to be released on November 9, 2010. Treyarch has stated that Black Ops will be much grittier than Modern Warfare 2 and that the differences between World at War and Black Ops will be as significant as the differences between Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Alfa Romeo Brera 1750 TBi By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist THIS IS a slightly schizophrenic car. From the front its shark-like face gives out a menacing vibe, but look at its backside and all the aggression has gone to reveal a fairly tame looking beast. Only the low stance of the Alfa and the four tailpipes give away the true nature of the car. I found the overall shape of the Alfa Romeo Brera quite pleasing, and it got looks of admiration from some people, but it wasn’t quite the sports car I thought it would be. Ride quality is not bad but the Alfa feels a tad cumbersome for such a small car and on bends it seems determined to lapse into understeer. It’s fun to drive, don’t get me wrong, but there’s no blistering performance – it’s just pleasantly quick with a 0-60mph sprint of 7.7 seconds, accompanied by a high pitched roar coming from the lovely tailpipes. The interior styling is simply exquisite with plenty of metallic finishes and all the dials and controls are slanted

towards the driver in a really attractive, traditional, sporty way. There’s even an oil temperature gauge and a very fashionable starter button. Add the fact that there’s plenty of adjustment in both the driver’s seat and the steering column, it’s also an easy car to achieve a comfortable driving position in. Of course this Alfa Romeo is by no means a family car and yet I managed to fit my two small children in the back. It was a hassle fitting the child seats in place and my wife had to move her front seat forward quite a way, but nonetheless, everyone got in. Even the 300-litre boot just managed to swallow a folded pushchair. Mind you, I did have to shut the boot lid a few times to make sure it
© BARNES-CLAY MEDIA 2010 www.barnes-claymedia.webeden. co.uk stayed in there, but the important thing for me was that the Brera proved versatile enough to be a big boy’s toy, as well as have a family day out in. But what exactly is under the bonnet of the Alfa Romeo Brera? Well, it has a 1750 TBi petrol unit which has variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, a turbocharger and an ingenious ‘scavenging’ control system. This, says Alfa Romeo, improves air-flow through the engine and cuts down on turbo lag. The results are impressive with the 1.7-litre engine generating 197bhp and 320Nm of torque from 1,400rpm. Despite the tempting engine and the lovely looks, the Brera has intimidating competition in the guise of the
Audi TT, and the Nissan 370z. BMW’s 1-Series Coupe and Peugeot’s bizarre RCZ are also potential rivals. It also won’t retain its value as steadfastly as its premium brand rivals, but starting at around £25,000, the Brera 1750 TBi is not bad value for money. Its running costs shouldn’t be too expensive either. The Co2 emissions are only 189g/ km and I managed, even with a family on board, around 34mpg on the combined cycle. So, if you’re after a good looking, sporty car and you want something a little different then the Alfa Romeo Brera could be right up your street. The car makes you happy – it feels a sexy car to be in, and that, I suspect, is why people will buy it.

Family Scene With just a few weeks until the decorations go up, maybe it’s time to have a go yourself at making some new ones for home or even work to brighten up your desk! Spray some Holly with silver or gold glitter spray or ‘fake snow’ spray. Use a red ribbon to tie the holly together and make your own door decoration. I love an informal ‘handspray’ of seasonal green foliage with holly and mistletoe added for colour and fun! New decorations each year are a tradition in our house, but
National Anti-Bullying Week 15 – 19 November 2010 this year as the household budget cuts dig in, we’re going to experiment with card, buttons and ribbon to make our own. Use some green, red and white buttons to make this charming Santa and tree. Instead of foil wrapped chocolates, try making some card cones and tie them onto the tree with ribbon. Fill with homemade biscuits! Decorate the cones with glitter, wrapping paper, buttons, ribbons...the list is endless.... Good old fashioned paperchains bring back lots of festive memories. Kits with gummed paper through to wrapping paper or newspaper and a glue stick all make great chains – perfect for the kids rooms!
Your Safety As the nights draw in, our awareness of security in the home can be heightened. Just a few simple steps can keep your home, possessions and vehicles more secure. Home: Invest in a security light and alarm to deter burglars. Burglar alarms are shown to be the number one deterrent. Use a timer switch for lights when you are not in. Make sure all doors and windows are secured, including upstairs ones. Beware bogus callers. If somebody

knocks, be wary. Ask to see photo ID, call the company from a number listed in the telephone directory, not on the ID card. Car: Don’t leave anything in the car, even if it isn’t valuable – the temptation for thieves could still be too great. Removed Sat Nav devices and

holders. Clean the glass to as the tell tale circle on the window just gives the game away. Park in a well lit area if possible and use your garage if you can. When you’re away, give your car keys to someone else for safe keeping. Don’t leave them at home near your front door. Bullying is a worry, whether children or adults are involved. With National Anti-Bullying week this month, we’ve brought you some advice and contacts to support you. Bullying is when one person or a group deliberately hurts another individual or group. This is usually more than a one off incident and can be both physical and psychological. Most bullying is based on real or perceived differences. What signs should parents and carers look for? Changes in behaviour can have many causes, but calm discussions with your child are vital for understanding what is happening and be aware that victims of bullying do not always appear to reveal any outward signs.
Possible signs that your child may be being bullied can be found on the Anti-bullying www.antibullyingalliance.org.uk/ PDF/Parents_and_Carers.pdf There is also information to help parents and carers if they believe their child is bullying someone else. Be aware Each organisation like schools, activity groups, sports clubs and youth clubs should have an AntiBullying Policy available. Ask for a copy. If you suspect your child is being bullied: Talk to your child about what is happening and be calm, show sensitivity, show concern & reassure your child that he or she is not to blame If at all possible, act with your child’s agreement; Contact someone in the organisation Expect the organisation to take you seriously and take appropriate action; Maintain contact and work with the organisation. Some Do’s and Don’ts Do listen to your child Do take your child’s concerns seriously Do encourage your child to tell you what has
been happening and in particular to report any trouble that has been encountered Do help your child to try and find a safe solution Do talk to the organisation Do look for signs of distress shown by your child Don’t ignore your child if they say they are worried about being with certain people or in certain places Don’t tell your child: “Just put up with it”. Bullying is never acceptable. Action needs to be taken to stop bullying Don’t tell your child to fight back. The bully may be stronger. Your child could be hurt or get into trouble Don’t immediately rush off and deal with the situation yourself, let the organisation know and leave it to them to deal with Don’t approach the parents/carers of the perpetrator as this can make things worse

WOMEN’S BUSINESS CENTRE REPRESENTS UK BEST PRACTICE Peterborough Women’s Enterprise Centre (PWEC) was presented as an example of UK Best Practice to an international audience at the Scottish Parliament on 30th September, as part of the European WINNET 8 programme promoting gender equality. PWEC is one of only two specialist business centres in the UK for female entrepreneurs and aspiring businesswomen, offering a supportive, inclusive and informal environment for women to develop their enterprise ideas, skills and new business ventures. PWEC’s success is largely attributable to its innovative holistic business model, which tailors support for women at all stages of the enterprise journey, from pre-aspirational to high growth. Working in partnership with organisations across the private and public support landscape, it gives clients a wide range of services and advice. Providing women-specific skills development and workshops completely free of charge, PWEC has experienced significant demand for its services since its doors opened to the public just six months ago, with interest increasing as word spreads about what’s on offer for local women.

Ryan’s November Football Preview
Liverpool v Chelsea- November 7th (My prediction, 0-2) These 2 heavyweight sides have had a very contrasting start to the season. Liverpool, whose problems off the pitch have almost hidden the ones on it, have found themselves in a horrible mess so far. As this goes to press they lie in the bottom 3 with only 2 Premier League wins out of 9 and 9 points on the board. Chelsea’s campaign has been the exact opposite. A defeat at Man City has blotted an almost faultless start, having scored a staggering 25 goals. The battle between Torres and Terry at one end, as well as the one at the other end between Drogba and Carragher, I believe will determine this result. This is why I believe the reigning champs will be victorious. Fernando Torres has had a slow start to the season and with Chelsea’s resilience, (they have only conceded 2 goals as this goes to press) I think that will be enough.
Posh Preview At the time of writing this, Gary Johnsons Peterborough United side are sitting pretty in League 1, lying in 3rd place after 13 matches. This month they face tough away trips to Walsall and early season title favourites Southampton, added to home ties with Charlton and Leyton Orient. Personally I don’t see why the Posh can’t go into December undefeated this month and having added at least 10 points to their tally. With London Road being something of a fortress (as well as a goal magnet!), I can only see both fixtures here as a Posh win. For the trips to Walsall and Southampton they’ll need gritty performances like the wins at Carlisle and Plymouth earlier in the season but after consecutive away defeats to Hartlepool and Brentford the boys will have hopefully learned the lessons needed to be more resilient away from home.
Arsenal v Tottenham- November 20th (My prediction, 2-2) The North London derby has taken on even more significance in the last 18 months and this match-up is no different. With both sides now confident of challenging at the top end of the league, and the table being so tight, losing for either team would be disastrous. This is one of the reasons I’m going for a draw. Both sides have the Please email me at ryan@semplesoccer.co.uk to respond to my predictions and visit www.semple-soccer.co.uk where they will all be posted. Until next time!

creativity and firepower to score but for me they also lack that defensive strength and real desire to shut the other one out. A William Gallas return back to the Emirates will definitely add to the white hot atmosphere. Players like gunners captain Cesc Fabregas and new starlet Jack Wilshere as well as Spurs Jermaine Defoe and red hot Gareth Bale will no doubt be desperate to make a big impact on proceedings.
Spectacular Speedway at the Showground! By Leandra Graves The final meeting of the speedway season took place at the East of England Showground on Saturday October 16th and it went off with a bang! The prestigious Elite League Riders Championship was a fitting finale, on what has been an exciting season for the Peterborough Panthers. The top two Panthers riders took on the best riders in the league, on an individual front, gunning for glory. There was something to celebrate for the massive crowd as Panthers No1 and GP star, Kenneth Bjerre, picked up some silverware with a third place on the night. Niels-Kristian Iversen, also battled hard and just missed out on a place on the final after an engine failure. The meeting was won by Wolverhampton star, Freddie Lindgren. Speedway returns to the city in March when the Peterborough team will be out to make amends and fight for honours, in the hope of clinching the Elite League crown. November 6th is the annual Panthers dinner and dance held at the Peterborough Suite, East of England Showground. All riders will be in attendance. Tickets cost £34 including a three-course meal.
