Rotary Club impressed by youth speakers Kudret Baki and Medi Walji from The Voyager School, and Sam Miller and Sarah Forster from The Deepings School, each gave a prepared talk to a panel of judges and some 50 Rotarians and their wives. Runners up Kudret, Sam and Sarah each received £25, and the winner, Medi received the Youth Speaks trophy and a cheque for £50. The trophy will now join the one won by his brother in the same competition three years ago! Presenting the prizes, Rotary President Geoff Card, said:

“Not only was this a very close competition, but it was also a pleasure to meet young people who are such good ambassadors for their schools.”

Deeping St James pushes the boat out for ‘in Bloom’ competition Deeping St James is entering the East Midlands in Bloom competition this year, part of the prestigious RHS sponsored Britain in Bloom competition, and the village has well and truly pushed the boat out to launch their entry. "In fact," says Councillor Judy Stevens, "there is more than one boat in our entry this year, with a kayak planted by the Canoe Club and placed on the piece of riverside owned by the Deepings United Charities and another painted and planted by the Scouts and placed on the Car Park at the Deepings Nature Reserve." With residents encouraged to plant an unusual container and enter it into the Rose and Sweet Pea Show (see opposite page), the village, renowned for its attractive gardens is all set to bloom this summer. In fact, such is the enthusiasm for gardening in the village that a book addressing that very subject is to be launched at the Rose and Sweet Pea show where a Flower Festival depicting chapters from the book will take place in the Priory Church on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 26th and 27th June. The book; 'Gardening in Deeping St James, the story so far...' has been compiled with the help of Deeping St James Local History Society and Deepings Heritage and promises to unveil some previously unknown local horticultural facts. It is beautifully illustrated and a picture of the Rose and Sweet Pea Show dating back to 1912 when all of the village turned up for the show in their Sunday best, takes pride of place. The book will sell for just £2.99 and can be ordered from clerk.dsjpc@btconnect.com Judging for the competition takes place in early July and so all residents are being asked to be extra vigilant in ensuring that the area around their homes is litter picked and weeded. "The Parish Council has undertaken a number of initiatives including the complete redesign of info@scenepublishing.co.uk

the gardens in Manor Way and the smartening up of the parade of shops in Ryecroft Avenue" explains Councillor Judy Stevens "But ultimately we will be judged on how well the whole community embraces this event and so we have been very grateful for the help we have had

from partners such as The Rotary Club of the Deepings, the Scouts, Cubs and Guides, the Camera Club and Waterside Garden Centre- to name a few. But, we need the help of all residents in the village to really make a difference!" The Scene June 10

More than just numbers….

new business success

When everything else is stripped away, accountancy is about numbers. Fledgling accountancy firm, Winham Hughes needed to stand out from the rest, Sally Winham and Paul Hughes had to offer something extra. ‘More than just numbers’ was a phrase they hit on very quickly as it’s about providing a full accountancy and taxation service and then going several steps further. Facing redundancy following the closure of Baker Tilly’s Peterborough Office, Sally & Paul realised their passion in their profession was more than just those numbers but was about building relationships with clients, understanding them and their business. A year ago, Winham Hughes opened for business in modern, purpose-built offices in Commerce Road, Lynch Wood, Peterborough, which were secured for them by Barker Storey Matthews. Starting Winham Hughes in the middle of the deepest recession for a generation was, says Paul, "a calculated risk". "We were nervous but we had

a solid background - we're accountants, we'd done the maths!" Paul thinks businesses in Peterborough have weathered the recession relatively well. "People have worked hard to reduce costs to save jobs and survive," said Paul. "As the economy picks up we will see fitter, leaner businesses in better shape for the future." "Local knowledge is a valuable asset our clients can call on. Peterborough is an interesting place to operate covering the entire spectrum of business from starts up’s to regional offices of multinationals. We can add value to our client’s business by helping them identify potential pitfalls – our Management Information service for instance gives real time figures which we can overlay on our local knowledge to create an accurate picture which helps forecasting and planning”. 01733 234945 or visit www.winhamhughes.co.uk

Cinema Releases

4.3.2.1 – Release Date: June 02nd After directing his first rather successful project ‘Adulthood’ here in the UK, Noel Clarke returns to his directing seat to take on his next motion picture, the strangely titled ‘4.3.2.1’. As well as directing this film he also wrote it and as well as this he stars in it!, so it is clear to me that his heart and soul is in the movie, so I just hope it is as good as he wants it to be. Spanning over two cities four girls destinies intertwine as they all relate to a diamond theft that has just happened, that is all your getting for now, as I don’t want to give too much of the plot away before its release. Killers – Release Date: June 16th From the director that bought us ‘The Ugly Truth’ and ‘21’ he has now returned to hopefully save Ashton Kutcher’s steadily declining career, after his terrible performance in ‘What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas’.The story tells of a woman who is abroad on holiday, once there she promptly finds the man of her dreams Spencer Aimes (Ashton) as soon as this happens they tie the knot and get married. Once they move back to their home in the states, events turn bad as their next door neighbours just so happen to be hired assassins, paid to kill the couple. The married couple don’t take this threat likely; they actually retaliate and fight to defend themselves, interesting. So with a combination of comedy, action, and thriller I am predicting this film to be some- what similar to the 2005 smash hit ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ will it be as memorable? I sure hope so!

Invictus – Release Date: June 14th Clint Eastwood is easily one of my favourite directors in the world, his pasts work include ‘Changeling’ as well as ‘Gran Torino’ both outstanding motion pictures. After being Imprisoned for 27 years, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is finally released, once released he is quick to be elected for president, when this happens he notices that his people are divided, what does he do to unite the people together in his country? He does the impossible, he gets the South African rugby team to the Rugby World Cup Championships. With an amazing combination of Matt Damon (acting as Ruby player ‘Francois Pienaar’) and Morgan Freeman you will find yourself watching this film again and again. By Andrew Dex

Using Essential Oils – Part 1

Oil Burner

Many people associate aromatherapy with massage and although this is an excellent treatment, particularly where stress or muscular problems are involved, it is not the only way to benefit from essential oils. For many people massage is not possible (e.g. too frail) or not practical (time constraints) or too costly. In some instances, other methods of absorption are more effective. The internal use of essential oils is controversial and prohibited by most professional organisations in the UK. In any case, there are so many others ways of using essential oils, that taking by mouth should be avoided. The only exception to this is mouth washes and gargles, where the oils are not swallowed. Gargling with oils is an excellent way of treating sore throats (one drop each of tea tree and lemon in a tumbler of water, stirred well before each mouthful. Alternatively use sandalwood/roman chamomile). Inhalation is one of the most effective means of using essential oils, both on a physical and emotional level. It is particularly good for respiratory problems. You should not inhale directly from the bottle – essential oils are highly concentrated and powerful – but for an instant effect, one or two drops on a tissue work well for headaches, sinus problems and colds(e.g. peppermint or eucalyptus Smithii). Inhaling oils from a bowl of steaming water (not asthmatics) is particularly good for coughs and colds. Using a vaporiser means you can treat several people at once and keep a room healthy, as many essential oils act as air purifiers. Also on a psychological level, oils can be used to treat insomnia or depression. Bathing with oils combines skin absorption with steam inhalation and can be very relaxing. This method can be is helpful for aches and pains, cold and flu, and calming babies and children. Because essential oils are fat soluble, they do not disperse well in water, and are best mixed with a carrier before use. Carrier oils (such as sunflower or grapeseed) are moisturising to the skin, but can make the bath slippery. A plain vegetable based lotion, full fat (whole) milk or honey (good for eczema and psoriasis) can be used. Alternatively,

24

The Scene June 10

you can purchase bath foam bases from aromatherapy suppliers. A single drop of essential oil is sufficient for a baby or young child up to 8 years, but some oils (e.g. lemon, peppermint, and clove) are skin irritants and care needs to be taken with quantities. Prepare the bath to the appropriate depth and temperature before mixing in the oils and ideally stay in the water for 10 minutes or more. Essential oils are powerful and should be used with care. For use

during pregnancy, on babies/sensitive skin and the frail/elderly, before exposure to sunlight, or where there are medical conditions, you should consult a qualified aromatherapist (www.ifpaaroma.org). Make sure you use a reputable supplier; contact the Aromatherapy Trades Council (01473 603630) for a list of members. If you have problems with your skin (dry skin, eczema, acne, psoriasis) why not sample AlvaNatural range of remedies at the Deeping Show on 5th and 6th June. Essential Reading for Children

The Importance of Being Kennedy by Laurie Graham Harper Perennial £7.99 I love love love this author – she’s hugely underrated. This novel romps along at a fantastic pace – and yet it also provides the reader with great insight into key moments of history. Opening in 1917, the story is told by Nora, the fictitious nanny to the Kennedy clan. We are introduced to JFK, Bobby,Ted and the other Kennedy siblings when they are babies and we watch them grow up during the course of the novel. Set against a fascinating background of the Depression in the USA and the Second World War in the UK, it’s a compelling novel peopled with unforgettable characters. It’s also gently irreverent, extremely funny and very touching. If you like it, you’ll love her previous book, Gone With The Windsors – which took as its focus the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, reported in the fictitious diary of a make-believe friend of Wallace Simpson.

An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo Harper £12.99 One of the our greatest children’s authors, Michael Morpurgo’s books appeal across the age divide as they can be read on so many levels. I defy you not to sob your way through War Horse. His new novel, An Elephant in the Garden is a thrilling and moving book featuring an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war. Set in 1944, it features Elizabeth – her mother works at Dresden zoo and her father is in the German army. Elizabeth adores Marlene, the zoo’s young elephant. But the Director says the animals must be shot in case the zoo is bombed and they run amok. Elizabeth and her mother move Marlene into their back garden…but then the bombs start to fall. It’s mid winter, their home is destroyed, they must flee the city, they must avoid the Russian troops – all this with a young elephant in tow.

Fiction

My Bonnie by John Suchet - Harper Collins £18.99 Earlier this year, the nation’s favourite newsreader John Suchet revealed that his beautiful 67-year-old wife Bonnie, the love of his life, is suffering from Dementia. During the past three years he has gone from lover to carer and this moving, painfully honest account describes his loneliness and despair. Written in passionate and vivid prose, Suchet gives voice to both the warmth of the good times and the utter anguish of the bad times. In a series of moving and heartfelt stories, he weaves present day descriptions of life with Bonnie now – with memories of the romantic years they shared together. John personally cared for his beloved wife and for three years he kept her condition secret from all but family and close friends. Last September, however, he made the agonizing decision to move his wife to a full-time care home. This book is brave – at times it’s stark – however, essentially this is a love story; of how devotion and dedication can make something positive and rich of even the hardest times.

Dead Like You by Peter James - Macmillan, £17.99 Peter James is on the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller writers and his Roy Grace detective novels are immensely popular. The author based Dead Like You on a true life case – that of The Rotherham Shoe Man when over 20 women reported rape by a man who then took their shoes. This novel is relocated to Brighton where, after a New Year’s Eve ball, a woman is raped. A week later, another victim. All that links them is that their shoes have been taken. For Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, these new cases dredge up similarities to “Shoe Man” - an unsolved series of crimes resulting in a murder a decade earlier. Could this be a copycat, or has Shoe Man resurfaced? More women are assaulted and Grace becomes convinced they are dealing with the same man. Soon enough, Grace and his team are in a race against time to identify and save the life of the potential 6th victim. I like the character of Grace – he’s a modern police officer; down to earth and dedicated but out of work he’s also a troubled man haunted by the disappearance of his own wife years ago. The author himself is a member of the Sussex Police Rape Prevention Team.

Sizzling Summer sounds to revive musical memories

The music of Abba is well loved by a wide range of people from the young to the notso-young and the amazing success of the film version of ‘Mamma Mia’ had people singing along to their string of hits all over again in cinemas throughout the countr y. Since it is highly unlikely that the Bjorn Again original group will ever reform (can you imagine what price they could command if they did?), the next best thing is to go to see one of the tribute bands that specialise in performing their music. One of the best of these is the wittily titled Bjorn Again, who perform in the park at Burghley House, Stamford, on the evening of Saturday, June 12. Bjorn Again were originally formed in Australia back in 1988 and have played the music – with a touch of humour of Abba to thousands of fans with more than 3,700 shows in 55 countries to their credit. The suppor t act on June 12 is Cher yl Baker, who many will remember for her work with Bucks Fizz and their ‘80s smash ‘Making Your Mind Up’. The combination of the music of Abba and the delightful setting of Burghley makes for a lovely family summer night out. Bring a picnic and be prepared for a sing-song! Adult tickets cost £28.50 each, tickets for children aged 5-15 cost £15.00 each, while children under 5 go free. Call 01780 752451 to book tickets. Friends of Burghley are entitled to a discount of £2.00 on telephone bookings only. While I never got to see Abba perform back in the day, I did once inter view Bjorn on the telephone during the period I was working for the long-gone music weekly ‘Record Mirror’ from 1976 to 1977. Some of the most consistently creative music of the 1970s came

from the flamboyant Roxy Music with their suave frontman Br yan Ferr y. I caught the original line up with Brian Eno early in their career at a Cr ystal Palace Garden Par ty and by the time I saw them again at Birmingham, they had taken their sophisticated take on rock right round the world. More recently I saw Brian Ferr y at one of the picnic concer ts held in the grounds of Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, another lovely setting for a summer night. Roxy Magic is the longest-running tribute to Roxy Music and Br yan Ferr y and the group make an appearance at Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday, July 3 at 8.30pm. The real band were well known for their brilliant musicianship and playing, so this tribute band have a lot to live up to, while their singer, Keith Hackett, emulates the look and sound of the smooth Mr Ferr y. Tickets cost £10.00 in advance and £12.00 on the door (subject to availability) and can be ordered from 0782 803 2241. Care Costs and Peace of Mind

If you are thinking about care for yourself in old age, or how a relative will be looked after in their old age, one of the main things on your mind is probably how much it will cost for you or them to be looked after if a stay in a care home is required. Although it’s not possible to give a definitive figure, doing some research to give you an educated idea of prices should help you with your financial planning. Knowing where you stand financially will also give you peace of mind. Specialist advisors in later life planning are essential when looking at the financial side of care. A survey published by Saga recently estimated that average care home bills are around £550 a week. The average stay of a person in a care home is four years, so over the average stay costs

could come in at around £114,000 per person. A combination of reliable information and sensible advice will mean that you should be able to arrive at a tailored financial solution that will secure a happy and comfortable future for you and your loved ones. However you should take care – your affairs are unique so you need to work with someone that you trust and who is close to your circumstances to provide a solution that is relevant to your needs. In good quality care planning there is no such thing as one size fits all. If you would like an informal chat about the options available to you or would like us to send you further information on your care options call Tancred on 01778 342291.

but it’s hard to mask the rich throaty burble of the power waiting to be unleashed. Hit the open roads and the Toyota-sourced powerplant simply pins you in your seat. The 5.1-second 0-62mph time blows you away, yet the Lotus still feels cool, calm and collected. The car’s brakes took me by surprise – they scrub off speed in a blink of an eye and yet the Evora is totally stable under heavy braking and the mid-engined layout gives the car terrific traction. As well as the ability to turn heads and its sheer driving pleasure the Evora’s combined cycle fuel economy figure of 32.5mpg is also something to be admired. In a day driving from Norwich via Lincolnshire to Northamptonshire I got about 28 mpg - not bad considering I played about a little on the 100 mile journey home. The Norfolk based company has done an amazing job on this car. It’s utterly exciting to drive, it draws looks wherever it goes, it feels safe and it is an extraordinarily competent all-rounder. All in all Group Lotus fulfilled my boyhood dreams by letting me drive this beautiful work of art. It’s something I won’t forget for a long time and nor will anyone else who gets behind the wheel of the stunning new Evora. info@scenepublishing.co.uk
