Adventures in ‘Dragonland’
with Lucinda Hare
Students from the book groups at both Stamford High School and Stamford School were fortunate enough to meet with children’s writer and illustrator, Lucinda Hare. Lucinda, who had travelled with husband Paul all the way from Edinburgh, is the author of successful fantasy novel,‘The Dragon Whisperer’, and is soon to publish the second book in this ‘Dragonsdome’ series.Whilst eating homemade cakes produced by the students, Lucinda responded to a whole battery of questions posed by her eager audience. Many of the pupils had communicated with Lucinda via e-mail in the weeks leading up to her visit, and she seemed genuinely delighted to finally meet her correspondents face to face. Lucinda is a passionate animal-lover and nature-enthusiast – and also, has an alarming obsession with coca-cola! She told the pupils how various waif and stray animals she has rescued provide her with material for the dragons and various other creatures in her books. She also passed around her sketchpads and original artwork, emphasising how important drawing was to her in the process of creating both characters and storylines. Students were also set two challenges by Lucinda at the very
12
The Scene, Stamford June 10
start of the afternoon. She wanted everyone to invent an original name for one of the breeds of dragon that feature in her novels and explain its significance. Lucinda promised that the name she considered best would be used in her next novel and so immortalised forever. Lucinda also asked budding artists amongst the group to illustrate any scene that they liked from the first novel and then send it to her.The winner of this second competition is to receive a valuable limited edition copy of ‘The Dragon Whisperer’. Lucinda seemed to thoroughly enjoy time spent with the book groups and said that she really hoped students would continue to keep in touch with her. She also vowed to return again next year. This time, to read aloud extracts from the second book in the series; a novel that she promises is far more elaborate, intriguing and exciting than the first! On the Razzle
Eric Knowles visits Lambs of Stamford As well as being a recognised expert in his chosen field, Eric Knowles is now a well-known face in the world of antiques, particularly to viewers of the BBC's 'Antiques Road Show'. He appears to be one of those rare individuals who is able to share his considerable knowledge in a way that is exciting and easy to understand. As a person, Eric is a self-confessed ‘pot-aholic’, and well known at Moorcroft as a star guest on a number of occasions at the pottery’s annual Open Weekend. As well as being an antiques expert, Eric is a devout Moorcroft collector, and a person who is pleased to share his passion with other collectors around the world. Eric Knowles of "Antiques Roadshow" fame visited Lambs in Stamford in May for their Moorcroft Pottery Event.
Stamford Shoestring Theatre’s summer delight from 22nd to 26th June at the Stamford Arts Centre is On the Razzle, Tom Stoppard’s breakneck roller coaster ride through Viennese society in the mid 19th century, in the company of the incorrigible but naïve Christopher and Weinberl. When their master, Herr Zangler, goes off to Vienna to see his formidable fiancée, Madam Knorr, the two shop assistants take the opportunity to shut up shop, abandoning the rollmops, smoked eel and pigs’ trotters Herr Zangler (Kevin McCabe) on the for an adventure in razzle in Vienna with his incorrigible assistants Christopher (Annie Corrigan) the city. and Weinberl (Paul Gooding) An already complex web of relationships and misalliances is further complicated by Herr Zangler’s propensity to mispronounce and mangle every utterance, leading to ever greater confusion and misunderstanding. A treat for all the family. Tickets £8 (£7 conc) from Stamford Arts Centre 01780 763203. Visit: www.stamfordshoestring.com.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve
Not Just For The Birds
Rutland Water Nature Reser ve (RWNR) was created during the 1970’s, a result of the then newly created Rutland Water. Run in par tnership with Anglian Water and the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust, the reser ve has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and is now regarded as one of the finest Nature Reser ves in Western Europe. The reser ve occupies a narrow strip of land running for nine miles around the Western end of Rutland Water and covers 600 acres. A reser ve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Ramsar site, designated by The Convention on Wetlands as of international impor tance especially as a waterfowl habitat. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded and on a good spring day, it is possible to see over 100 species of bird, with rarities such as Red Kites a distinct possibility. Over the winter months in excess of 20,000 wild fowl can be found including 10% of the Nor th Western European Gadwall population. Summer sees the Osprey’s return to Rutland Water Nature Reser ve, a site where in 2001, these magnificent fish eating hawks bred for the first time in England for over 150 years! The success of this reser ve is due to wide diversity of habitats that range from ancient woodlands that are carpeted by Blue Bells in the spring, to meadows, streams, shallow water lagoons and reed beds which provide food for the various types of water fowl.

These huge variations in habitat not only suppor t a massive diversity of birds, but also provide homes for some the UK’s most elusive and rare animals. Ever y thing from Otters and Stoats, through to Great Crested Newts and Grass Snakes make their homes here. From an ecological standpoint Rutland Water Nature Reser ve truly is a goldmine. Something for everyone Perhaps the most significant offering that RWNR has is that all this beauty, tranquillity and natural splendour can be enjoyed by anyone. Access to the 27 bird hides and miles of nature trails will cost you a mere £4 for the day from visitor centres, either Egleton or Lyndon. Both have educational interpretation rooms that are open to the public and sell a range of natural histor y books, gifts wild bird food and an assor tment of snacks and drinks to refuel with after your walk. For people with limited mobility there is the oppor tunity to use a buggy (prior booking essential) and the majority of the hides have wheelchair access. With friendly, knowledgeable staff and volunteers on hand even a novice will be able identify what they have seen. Its all about the Kids RWNR provides an extensive education programme that caters for children of all ages from primar y school to sixth form and beyond. The education centre at RWNR runs a number of holiday activities. Popular days include Nature Detectives, Explorer Days, and Family Fun Days. For as little as £25 a day children get the chance to go bug hunting, pond dipping and make nest boxes along with a whole host of fun activities. All days are led by experienced teacher naturalists and the emphasis is ver y much on having as much fun as possible! Date for your diary - Bird Fair On the 20, 21 & 22 August RWNR will again host the British Bird Watching Fair, the largest event of its kind in the world. Essential Reading for Children
The Importance of Being Kennedy by Laurie Graham Harper Perennial £7.99 I love love love this author – she’s hugely underrated. This novel romps along at a fantastic pace – and yet it also provides the reader with great insight into key moments of history. Opening in 1917, the story is told by Nora, the fictitious nanny to the Kennedy clan. We are introduced to JFK, Bobby,Ted and the other Kennedy siblings when they are babies and we watch them grow up during the course of the novel. Set against a fascinating background of the Depression in the USA and the Second World War in the UK, it’s a compelling novel peopled with unforgettable characters. It’s also gently irreverent, extremely funny and very touching. If you like it, you’ll love her previous book, Gone With The Windsors – which took as its focus the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, reported in the fictitious diary of a make-believe friend of Wallace Simpson.
An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo Harper £12.99 One of the our greatest children’s authors, Michael Morpurgo’s books appeal across the age divide as they can be read on so many levels. I defy you not to sob your way through War Horse. His new novel, An Elephant in the Garden is a thrilling and moving book featuring an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war. Set in 1944, it features Elizabeth – her mother works at Dresden zoo and her father is in the German army. Elizabeth adores Marlene, the zoo’s young elephant. But the Director says the animals must be shot in case the zoo is bombed and they run amok. Elizabeth and her mother move Marlene into their back garden…but then the bombs start to fall. It’s mid winter, their home is destroyed, they must flee the city, they must avoid the Russian troops – all this with a young elephant in tow.
Non-fiction
Fiction
My Bonnie by John Suchet - Harper Collins £18.99 Earlier this year, the nation’s favourite newsreader John Suchet revealed that his beautiful 67-year-old wife Bonnie, the love of his life, is suffering from Dementia. During the past three years he has gone from lover to carer and this moving, painfully honest account describes his loneliness and despair. Written in passionate and vivid prose, Suchet gives voice to both the warmth of the good times and the utter anguish of the bad times. In a series of moving and heartfelt stories, he weaves present day descriptions of life with Bonnie now – with memories of the romantic years they shared together. John personally cared for his beloved wife and for three years he kept her condition secret from all but family and close friends. Last September, however, he made the agonizing decision to move his wife to a full-time care home. This book is brave – at times it’s stark – however, essentially this is a love story; of how devotion and dedication can make something positive and rich of even the hardest times.
Dead Like You by Peter James - Macmillan, £17.99 Peter James is on the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller writers and his Roy Grace detective novels are immensely popular. The author based Dead Like You on a true life case – that of The Rotherham Shoe Man when over 20 women reported rape by a man who then took their shoes. This novel is relocated to Brighton where, after a New Year’s Eve ball, a woman is raped. A week later, another victim. All that links them is that their shoes have been taken. For Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, these new cases dredge up similarities to “Shoe Man” - an unsolved series of crimes resulting in a murder a decade earlier. Could this be a copycat, or has Shoe Man resurfaced? More women are assaulted and Grace becomes convinced they are dealing with the same man. Soon enough, Grace and his team are in a race against time to identify and save the life of the potential 6th victim. I like the character of Grace – he’s a modern police officer; down to earth and dedicated but out of work he’s also a troubled man haunted by the disappearance of his own wife years ago. The author himself is a member of the Sussex Police Rape Prevention Team.

‘THANKYOU’ CONCERT IN AID OF SPECIAL SCHOOL
ONE of the area’s most successful mixed voice choirs will be performing at Stamford United Reformed Church this month to raise funds for a local special school on Saturday, June 26. The Peterborough-based Gildenburgh Choir will be singing a wide repertoire of popular songs - including tunes from musical theatre, folk and light classical. There is no entry charge for what promises to be a hugely popular evening of musical entertainment, although donations for The Willoughby School in Bourne will be invited at the end of the performance. Elizabeth Banks, Stamford United Reformed Church Secretary, said: “We host regular concerts at the church, all free of charge, but with donations going to various charities and good causes. She added “Anne Thompson, a member and elder, sings with both our choir and Gildenburgh Choir and suggested that The Willoughby School should receive the proceeds from the concert”. Anne’s grandson, Alexander, has attended this wonderful school most of his life and is now 19 years old and Head Boy. The Willoughby School is for pupils with severe and
profound learning needs from birth to 19 years old and come from across the local area including Stamford, Market Deeping and Bourne.
The Gildenburgh Choir features more than 40 singers led by Musical Director Stephen Barber and David Wheeler as accompanist. The concert at Stamford United Reformed Church, Star Lane, starts at 7.30pm, with light refreshments served at the interval.

PARADISE
STAMFORD provides much to offer photographers whether they be young and old, novice or experienced, simply ‘happysnappers’ or rather more dedicated workers. Within the boundaries of the Conservation Area there are over 600 buildings classed of being of special architectural or historic interest and many provide ideal subject matter for image makers. There is an engaging mix of buildings from medieval churches and almshouses through to fine Georgian town houses and public buildings all of which have been spared from unsightly modern development. When you walk around the town look at the varied and colourful shop fronts many of which make very attractive pictures. But don’t forget to turn your camera skyward too in order to capture views of the interesting roof patterns
particularly along St. Paul’s Street and St. Mary’s Street. The skyline is punctuated by church spires and Collyweston slated roofs. Signs also make interesting subject matter; the one outside the Millstone Inn is of particular interest as is the one above the shop front of Walkers Book Shop. When you take your shots don’t forget to ‘get in close’ and look out for the unusual. Set yourself the challenge of taking the same views at different times of the year and in different weather conditions. Your pictures will undoubtedly provide both treasured memories and a fascinating record of the town in 2010. Stamford Photographic Society meet at Stamford School, Brazenose road, Stamford, and the next meetings are May 20th and June 17th at 8pm.

Capturing those special moments to last a lifetime
wIn
After 20 years in the print trade, and always been interested in photography as a hobby,Alexis took the opportunity to realize a dream of becoming a professional wedding and portrait photographer by training with Barrett & Coe in Norwich. “The courses are well organized and very stimulating and soon I began to feel that a complete career change was feasible. Initially, I have to admit, I wondered if I had what it took to turn ‘professional’, but Andrew Coe and Brian Barrett were very supportive and gave constructive advice to get the best results. After completing the portrait course, my confidence grew and I signed up for the wedding course straight afterwards” Said Alexis. Initially, he worked on a mobile basis, and has now recently secured fantastic premises in Scotgate, Stamford which is a
great location with nearby parking. Alexis specialises in baby photography, which he gets a lot of satisfaction from. The sessions at the studio are very relaxed, informal, and fun for parents as well! There are lots of toys and baby changing facilities, and as a dad of five, he is always ready to cope with any little surprises the babies and children may come up with! Weddings are such a family affair,Alexis is ably assisted by his wife, Lisa, who looks after the important little details, and helps organize the guests to ensure no one is missed! We meet with the couple a few times prior to the wedding so we can establish a great rapport, which really shows in the pictures. Alexis said “I take pride in producing unforgettable pictures and capturing those special moments to last a lifetime.”
you could win a family portrait session and photos worth £195 Just answer this question – Where is Alexis Drury’s photographic studio located? Please send your answer to info@scenepublishing.co.uk or to 96 Lincoln Road, Deeping Gate, Peterborough PE6 9BA (T&C apply and nor cash alternatives are available).
