Getting it right GUESTS Get this one out of the way first - if you sit down with your families and partners, and work out the maximum number of guests you will be inviting, this will give you an idea of the size of venue you will need. It will also help when planning your budgets and what venue to choose - for example will there be lots of children? Will you need separate areas where the older guests can enjoy the quiet away from the disco, does it have plenty of parking - the option for overnight stays and is it easy for people to get to using public transport, or disabled access? Will we be able to use our own caterers, supply our own drink, place a marquee etc, etc? Once all of this is established and you’ve decided on either a civil ceremony or church, you can start your hunt for the perfect venue.
THE HUNT If your time is short and you like to keep informed go online. By using search engines you can place your key words such as, ‘Wedding Venues Peterborough UK’ which will bring up a list for you to look at. Many sites such as www.hitched. co.uk will have venues in your criteria listed, and if you’re looking for inspiration or are planning to get married away from the local area this is a great place to start. • Wedding Magazines will give you ideas of how certain weddings work in different types of ways, and many regional magazines will hold adverts for venues, so if you see one pick it up! • Civil ceremony venues have licences for a maximum number of guests. Keep an eye on the venues you fall in love with and make sure that there is enough room for your guests • negotiate - if it’s slightly out of your budget • ask if you could have a simpler wedding
breakfast, and serve wedding cake as a dessert, or stick to 1 bottle of each on the table. Many venues will also hold mid-week events or Sunday weddings at a reduced cost - it’s worth looking at what savings can be made if you switch to a Friday or Sunday Wedding. • Ask people about their wedding day - visit potential venues for a meal, or book one of their evening events and assess their planning and organisation. Remember it’s your day - you’ve spent months organising it and when you hand the event over, you want to be confidant that their Events Coordinator is in control. MAKING YOUR MOVE Once you’ve established your short list - ring round and get brochures sent - if they do not
send them out at your request - consider what else may not get done. Ask questions, ask as many questions as you can and go with a list of things you need to know, before you sign on the dotted line. Meet the Events Coordinator - if you like them you’ll feel more at easy leaving the planning of your day in their hands. Get recommendations of suppliers they work with, look at online reviews and above all once you’ve booked the venue, stay in touch. Real life bride | BArnsdale lodge
Barnsdale Lodge a venue without compromise Having looked at several venues within the area we knew as soon as we saw Barnsdale Lodge it was the place for us. Not only did we hold our reception in the Barn Suite Ballroom which is a beautiful converted barn, we also married there. The ballroom has an elegant yet relaxed feel with its silk draped ceiling and chandeliers through to the grand piano and comfy seating area. We married in November and the weather was crisp and bright and the beautiful countryside which surrounds the lodge made for stunning backdrops on our photos as did the picturesque courtyard. The day itself was simply perfect, Paul Freeman (General Manager) and his team were on hand from start to finish to ensure that everything ran like clockwork. The food which was served throughout the day was outstanding and several of our guests commented on the quality and how delicious it was. One of my biggest concerns when planning my wedding was that I did

not want it to feel like a production line and at Barnsdale this simply did not happen as they offer a personalised and tailor-made service. Right from our very first visit to Barnsdale we were made to feel welcome. I simplye would not hesitate to recommend the Lodge as they made our special day a truly magical affair.
The Brides Outfit Having looked over a few bridal magazines I could have felt overwhelmed with the sheer volume of styles available. Having been recommended a few local bridal boutiques my mum and I called on Miss V Bridal in Market Deeping, which was a relatively new boutique. The atmosphere in the boutique was warm and welcoming and Gemma instantly made me feel at ease. Gemma produced a number of dresses for me to try that she felt would suit
my figure and I instantly fell in love with the 2nd dress i tried on which was a beautiful ivory silk dupioni strapless gown with a chapel length train by Justin Alexander. I always thought that it was a cliché when people say you know which is ‘the dress’ for you when you try it on, but this was definitely the case! With only 6 months notice we were working on a tight deadline but Gemma ensured the dress would be available for the day.

V that I called up the other boutiques that I had made appointments with and cancelled them!
The Bridesmaids I had 2 bridesmaids and 1 flower girl in attendance on the day. I had originally hoped for navy dresses but despite an extensive search, I never felt happy with any i viewed. I therefore opted for a deep aubergine colour and found exactly what I was looking for in Debenhams bridal
range. The girls wore full length slightly flared dresses which were teamed with matching boleros. My Flower Girl wore an ivory tulle dress again from Debenhams which i matched up with a fur bolero.
The Flowers I knew from the offset that I did not want the more modern hand tied bouquet but I also wanted to shy away from the more traditional full bouquet. I opted for orchids
as the main flower and having spoken with my cousin who is a professional florist (Flowers By David) we decided upon a delicate purple freesia and small rosebuds for my bouquet along with a slight sprinkling foliage. The bridesmaids carried smaller versions of my bouquet & the table centre pieces along with the venue itself were also decorated using the same flowers.

Mr & Mrs Parkinson The Honeymoon We booked our honeymoon through the team at Inspirational Travel who are based in Wittering. The team there specalise in tailor-made holidays and honeymoons and after much discussion we decided that we would take our honeymoon in the Maldives. With its powder soft sands, warm azure blue waters and tropical temperatures it sounded like the ideal dream destination.
We opted for a 12 night stay split over two islands. Our days were spent soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches that surround the island, snorkelling on the resorts superb house reef and pampering ourselves in the stunning Spa. We opted for a water villa which came with its own private plunge pool, sheer bliss! The cuisine served was simply out of this world and we over indulged on more than one occasion!! The staff were superb and ensured that we came away with many happy memories that will stay with us forever. Maldives

Other than you, your cake is one of the most photographed aspects of your day, and a part you truly share with your guests, so it’s important to get the cake you really want. Nicola Denbigh, owner of Little Cakes, has some tips on choosing your perfect wedding cake.
1 Have a look around to see what style of cake you like, but don’t limit yourselves to a version of someone else’s! Inspiration can come from your flowers, wedding stationery, details on the bride’s dress, décor inside the venue… pretty much anything! It’s always worth asking your cake designer to work with your ideas and suggest some other designs for you.
2 Each cake designer has their own style, so if you want a traditional cake, don’t go for one who specialises in contemporary cakes, and vice versa.
3 Arrange to meet before you sign on the bottom line! It’s good to make sure you’re on the same wavelength, to chat through ideas and, most importantly, to taste the cakes.
4 If you have a budget in mind, don’t be afraid to say so! The cost of your cake is determined by the size and level of decoration, but if your dream cake isn’t within your budget, ask your cake designer to work to your budget and come up with other options in a similar style.
5 Always check to see if your cake designer charges for delivery and set up, as this can dramatically increase the overall cost of your cake.

Hinchingbrook House Getting Married at Easter seemed a perfect way to celebrate with family and friends and in 2011 the marriage of Ben & Chrissie took place at Hinchingbrooke House, Huntingdon.
where there was a massive love heart of rose petals and a vase of daisies, which are my favourite flower. When I turned around Ben was on one knee behind me and he asked me to marry him. He didn’t have a ring, but whisked me away to Antwerp in Belgium, where he had made appointments with diamond specialists. I got to pick out my own diamond and the setting, which was really exciting.
Where did you get married? With direct links by train and car and a journey time of under 30 minutes from Peterborough the House, its grounds and the beautiful interior provided a stunning backdrop for what was a relaxed, beautiful and informal day.
Hinchingbrooke House, Huntingdon, it was a civil ceremony and everything took place at the venue.
How many guests? We had about 80 during the day plus another 80 in the evening.

Why choose the venue?
Chrissie Warn (nee Thorn), aged 29, works for Cambridgeshire County Council as a Recruitment Administrator. We were married in April 2011 and we’re expecting our first child in April this year.
It was a beautiful building with large grounds, perfect for lawn games. It also offered excellent value for money and suited our needs perfectly, with plenty of room for guests to enjoy the space and grounds.
How did Ben Propose? Ben (33) proposed on my birthday in 2009, which was also our fifth anniversary. I woke up in the morning and there was a trail of rose petals from the bedroom, down the stairs and in to the living room

Mr & Mrs Warn provided excellent customer service. Chrissie’s mum made the cake, which was a simple lemon drizzle cake and decorated it too. A family friend took our photos. The rings came from Ernest Jones and the suits came from Moss Bros.
Would you change anything? I wouldn’t have changed anything. The day was just perfect, even if it was the hottest day of the year.
What the guests thought
Where did you Honeymoon? We spent three weeks travelling across America via Amtrak. We started out in New York and ended up in Vegas. It was a really amazing journey. The scenery was just outstanding and the people were fantastic.
How did you decorate the venue? We didn’t decorate the rooms as the House is a 13th century building and already looked outstanding. Our flowers were yellow, cream and orange. The bridesmaid dresses were green, the flower girl dress was yellow. The groomsmen all wore matching colours, our centrepieces were similar colours, with mini eggs for favours and apples as name places.
What was your best memory of the day? Our first dance. We danced to Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants. It’s our favourite song and was just a lot of fun.
We had a fabulous day at Ben & Chrissie’s wedding it was a beautiful venue and being someone who enjoys space and plenty of room to chill out or dance it was perfect. Lots of specialist diets were catered for and the food was outstanding being vegan for the day I wasn’t left feeling hungry after tucking into roasted vegetable coscous and salsa, whilst my other half enjoyed his lamb shank and all the trimmings. Lemon and lime pie followed along with a wonderful fruit salad drizzled in alcohol. As a mum of a 6 month old I was pleasantly surprised at the layout for my daughter and how easy it was to ensure she sat at the table also. The waiting staff were lovely and I was blown away by the venue a simple, beautiful wedding relaxed and very grand at the same time. Photography Memories are priceless and with all the excitement your big day will fly by far too quickly. Your wedding photographs are a beautiful way to capture memories from the day and even moments you may have been unaware of. Here is some advice to make sure you get the best from your photographer resulting in amazing images and making your recollections of the day as special as possible.

Meet your photographer; it’s important that you feel at ease with them. This will reflect in your photographs, and if they get natural shots of the guests enjoying themselves will help capture the unique atmosphere of the day.
2 Decide if you want formal or natural shots, or maybe a mixture of the two, and discuss with the photographer if this is what they can provide. If you are looking for something different such black and white shots find out if this is possible and if you will be able to see originals to decide which you prefer.

Research the photographers work and products they can provide such as photobooks, albums, and framed products. A good photographer will have invested time into finding good quality products from reliable sources.

Find out how long before you will get to see the images afterwoulds and how they will supply them. Time is needed after the big day for the photographer to go through the images and enhance if needed so that you get the best from your photographs. Ask about copyright and how additional prints and products can be purchased afterwards.

If you plan to have some specific shots give a list of them to your photographer so they can arrange the most efficient way to get the best images without disrupting the flow of the day or intruding on you and your guests enjoying the celebration.

Check your photographer will research the wedding venues beforehand and where possible visit to understand its lighting conditions and good photographic locations. They must find out the rules of photography during the service too as these can differ in places.
