Cricketers Hit Sudden Heart Disease For Six THE JOE HUMPHRIES MEMORIAL TRUST Cricketers in Loughborough have been learning vital life-saving skills aimed at ensuring people know what to do if someone collapses in sudden cardiac arrest. Members of Loughborough Town Cricket Club recently took part in Joe’s Mini HeartStart 4 Sports, a training programme that teaches cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use a defibrillator. Club members who took part in the training included Abhinav Mukund, the club’s overseas player, who has played five tests for India. The training is one of the key priorities of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), a local charity dedicated to raising awareness of heart conditions such as SADS (Sudden Arrythmic Death Syndrome) and ensuring the local sporting community is ready and equipped to deal with someone who suffers a cardiac arrest. Steve Humphries, chair of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, said: “Summer is a time when even more people are involved in sport and I would encourage more clubs to follow Loughborough Town’s example to ensure the highest possible standards are in place when it comes to safety in sport. “More than ever, now we know young people can also be susceptible to undiagnosed heart conditions, it is vitally important players and officials have the necessary life-saving CPR skills and have access to, and knowledge on how to use, a defibrillator. “Sudden heart conditions like SADS do not discriminate between age or physical fitness levels. In the UK, 12 people aged between 12 and 35 tragically lose their lives every week to these ‘silent killer’ lethal heart diseases.” Abhinav said: “I’m so pleased to be supporting the Trust and taking part in this training. It’s shocking to think that sudden heart disease can affect anyone, at any time. Loughborough Town Cricket Club is striving to increase the awareness of SADS to improve the welfare of all our members and the wider community.” Paul Hughes, vice chair of Loughborough Town Cricket Club, said: “Nothing is more important than players’ safety, so we’re delighted to have had this training, which will be of great benefit to everyone at the club. While we all hope we never have to use it, this training could one day mean the difference between life and death. I’d encourage anyone involved in a sports club locally to get in touch with the JHMT and arrange a session.” The training was delivered by course instructor and former cardiac nurse Alan Harrison-White from JHMT, and follows the principles of the British Heart Foundation’s HeartStart programme, which teaches people emergency life support skills. Any clubs wanting to register their interest in the Joe’s Mini Heartstart 4 Sports training programme can email: Charles. poole@ntlworld.com Picture shows the launch of the Joe’s Mini Heartstart 4 Sports training sessions at Loughborough Town Cricket Club. Beaumanor Hall Hosts A Charity Pie Night This September! Beaumanor Hall, now famous for its “Pie Nights” and social occasions, is hosting a very special charity event on Friday 5th September. The recently retired and very popular manager at the hall, Alan Jacobs, sadly and tragically lost his wife Katherine, a local teacher, in 2005 from a very rare and devastating bacterial disease after having surgery to treat cancer. As a result, the KJ Charitable Trust was set up. The KJ Trust, a charitable organisation named in memory of Katherine Mary Jacobs, has two main aims: To help promote educational excellence in and around the Leicestershire area and to raise awareness of Necrotising fasciitis. Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by bacteria. It can destroy skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles within a very short time. Necrotizing fasciitis is very rare but serious. About 1 out of 4 people who get this infection die from it. Many people who get it are in good health before they get the infection. The “Charity Pie Night” has been set up to boost the charitable trusts intake. The ticket price of £12 per person is for an appetite satisfying selection of pie main courses and £15 to include a tempting array of sweets. Every penny of profit will be donated to this very worthwhile and locally targeted cause. All are welcome and the bar is open. The hall opens for Pie Night events from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and you can book by calling 01509 890119.

NATIONAL TRUST LEICESTER ASSOCIATION This August sees the 100th anniversary of Tattershall Castle being open to the public. It is deep in the Lincolnshire Fens, 15 miles from Sleaford, and was built about 1430 by Ralph, 3rd Baron Cromwell, who was Lord Treasurer of England to Henry VI. The castle was one of the earliest structures built of exposed decorative brickwork in England, but built at a time when keeps were going out of fashion. The property is essentially a status symbol as although it is outwardly defensive with two moats and machicolated fighting galleries under the battlements it is in fact a domestic country mansion masquerading as a fortress. This is evidenced by the large and plentiful windows and the several entrances. From 1700 onwards the castle became more and more neglected and by 1900 it was an overgrown, hollow ruin which was sold to the reclamation men, However, it was purchased in 1911 by Lord Curzon of Kedleston Hall near Derby who wanted to save it for the nation. Using his own money Lord Curzon excavated the moats, recreated the battlements, replaced the collapsed floors and purchased back the original fireplaces. He opened the castle to the public in 1914 and it was transferred to the National Trust in 1925 upon his death. Today you can explore all six floors of this medieval castle including the battlements which provide breath-taking views across the Lincolnshire countryside. Being sited next to RAF Coningsby visitors are also often treated to a display by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who are stationed there. Tattershall Castle is open seven days a week from 11.00am to 5.00pm until 2nd November including a special anniversary exhibition. New furniture shop opens in style...

Coalville’s newest business opened its doors to town shoppers on Friday 27th June. Coalville Furniture Superstore, in Belvoir Road, was officially opened by the Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor Graham Allman, with staff, guests and town shoppers joining him in the opening celebrations. As well as the ribbon cutting ceremony, guests enjoyed a cake which was made in the shape of a sofa by Coalville’s Sugar and Ice cake shop. Welcoming the store to the town, Cllr Allman said: “As a Council we are delighted that Paul Bancroft has decided to open his new venture in North West Leicestershire and particularly in Coalville utilising the former Co-operative store site. It has been too long since a new business of this size and quality has opened in the town and I am sure that it will attract customers from the greater district of North West Leicestershire and beyond, bringing in new customers to the town and benefiting all the local retailers. This is further proof that the District Council is “business friendly” and is encouraging new businesses to open within the District. “The opening went extremely well with members of the public going along to look around. I called by over the weekend on my way to Picnic in the Park, another successful event organised for the town by the District Council, and was delighted to see so many folk in the store and making purchases. Well done Paul and your team.” Business owner Mr Paul Bancroft said he was proud of the new venture and was delighted to be opening a store offering a huge choice of furniture for people in Coalville and the surrounding areas. Mr Bancroft has been running The Suite Superstore - a successful family-owned furniture store in Barwell - for 15 years. Mr Danny Jenno has been appointed as Store Manager and Mrs Stephanie Shaw as Store Assistant. Mr Jenno said: “The opening was very exciting and there was a real buzz in the showroom as we welcomed our first customers to the store. We have had a busy opening week and have received very encouraging comments from people visiting the store saying how pleased they are that a store like ours has opened in the town centre.” The Coalville Furniture Superstore is at 79 Belvoir Road (a building formerly occupied by the Co-op store) and sells leather and fabric upholstery, beds, bedroom furniture, dining tables, chairs and occasional furniture. www.thevineleicestershire.co.uk

Local Interest Gorse Covert Community Centre (Loughborough) is looking for help! The community centre has been running since 1981 and offers a broad range of activities and facilities to the local community. A visit to their website (www.gorsecovertcommunitycentre.co.uk) will show you why they think their service takes a lot of beating! So why do they need help? The community centre has a small staff team of mainly part-time workers in various roles, who are supported by an even smaller team of volunteer Trustees whose role is to “manage” the community centre. They meet approximately once a month for an overview of progress within the provision and communicate more frequently via email and telephone or by popping into the community centre when specific issues need a more hands on approach. They now feel it is time to expand their team and theye’re looking for new people to join their Board of Trustees to help guide their service through the next phase of its development. If you can spare a few hours a month have an interest in community activities and/or skills in accounting/business/ personnel areas, then they’d love to hear from you. Get in touch by email gorsecovert@aol.com , telephone the community centre office on 01509 843752 or just pop into the community centre for a look round, a great cup of coffee and a cake and a chat with Julie or Lesley in the office, they’re waiting to hear from you! SHEPSHED & DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION This has been a busy year for the Association. As well as planning visits to our twin town (see below), we have enjoyed a range of social activities. On January 25th we met in Anstey to celebrate Burns night in the traditional way, with haggis, whisky, and scenes from the life of the poet. In March we had our regular crêpes (pancakes) evening. In April we got together for a French film evening. In May we had a three course meal, with wine. This was a new venture, which we called Café Continental, where each person brought a dish (or dishes) for others to try. The evening was very successful, and we hope to repeat it. In June we took part in Shepshed show, and on a fine July morning we enjoyed a walk in the Shepshed area. Forthcoming events include a croquet evening at the end of August, and our Annual General Meeting in November. In early December (the weekend of the town’s christmas fair), around 20 members will be going to Shepshed’s twin town of Domont, for a family-based visit. Domont is a small town to the north of Paris, which we have been linked with for over 25 years. Many people have long-standing friendships with French partners. We are keen to welcome new members of the Association. For more information, please go to our website, www. shepshedtwinning.co.uk. Photo: Friends from Shepshed and Domont enjoy a meal together.

When dreaming up your fresh summer menus don’t forget to include al fresco lunches, picnics and BBQ’s too – we all love eating outdoors (the kids especially) and there are so many fun ways to get yourself and the family all eating really healthy, delicious food – so what are you waiting for, let your creative side run wild! Don’t forget the wine... SOMETHING DIFFERENT: WINES FROM MACEDONIA Macedonia – officially the Republic of Macedonia – is a modern country in southeastern Europe and one of the successor states of former Yugoslavia. Landlocked and bordered by Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania, Macedonia has a Mediterranean and continental climate, with hot, dry summers and moderately cold winters. The capital city is Skopje. Tourism forms an important section of the economy and has many natural and cultural attractions, including an admirable heritage of arts, architecture, literacy and music. The 8th September is recognised and celebrated as the day of independence from Yugoslavia (1991). The multi award-winning Stobi Winery is located in the renowned Tikvesh wine region of Macedonia, that has ideal conditions for the production of high-quality grapes, which, in turn, leads to the superb wines, we can all enjoy, today. Many grape varietals are grown, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, plus Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat and Riesling, amongst others. With grapes grown in their own vineyards, Stobi constantly invests in improving and expanding, including creating new vineyards, for example. The latest modern technology, plus expertise and dedication, ensures high-quality grapes and ultimately, their excellent wines. Stobi, Cuvée, I found to be an excellent dry white wine, with a good bouquet of fruits. Produced using Zhilavka, Zhupljanka, Riesling, Chardonnay and Muscat Ottonel grapes, harvested from their own vineyards, this wine is both fresh and full on the palate and has a prolonged finish, pairing wonderfully with white meats, fish and seafood. Stobi, Syrah, barrique, I rate as a superb red. Aged in French and American oak, and again made with grapes from their own vineyards (100% Syrah), this is another very popular production. Fruit sensations in the bouquet lead enticingly to an impressive mouth feel, which is elegant, with more fruits displayed. This ruby red wine accompanies beef and many other meat dishes, perfectly. Some other impressive wines from the Stobi Winery include Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel, Petit Verdot and Vranec. I am most pleased to have located Stobi Winery – a producer that has their wines available in the UK. Outstanding wines, with controlled origin. www.stobi.co.uk For details of all wines and availability Tel: 0845 370 2222. www.signatureglobal.co.uk

Peter Fisher Meet- New Headmaster for Grace Dieu Manor School Could you share your initial thoughts having been appointed? It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed Head of such a prestigious, Leicestershire school, succeeding Charles Foulds who retires in July. Grace Dieu is a beautiful, remarkable school with a distinctive ethos that makes it a special place. The pupils are a delight and the staff are warm and welcoming. I am, as you can imagine, excited and ambitious for the future.

Tell us more about you… Both my wife, Rachel, and I were born and raised in West London. We moved to Eastbourne a year or two after we married 17 years ago and are now excited about relocating to rural Leicestershire. Our boys (Jed aged 7 and Tobias aged 5) share our excitement and are eager to meet their new classmates, make new friends and have fun exploring the endless grounds… For relaxation I enjoy sport, choral music and I am an avid reader!

Describe your career progression so far I firmly believe that teaching is a calling. It certainly has been my vocation. I could not imagine having done, or doing, anything different. Having completed my undergraduate degree (Theology and Religious Studies) at St Mary’s University College I pursued my vocation to teach at Cambridge University, earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Management a few years later. I am also a Section 48 for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. Prior to being appointed as Headmaster at Grace Dieu I was Deputy Head of Beechwood Sacred Heart School in Tunbridge Wells, a co-educational Independent Catholic school for 3 – 18 year olds. Other roles in my teaching career included being part of the Senior Management Team at St Leonards-Mayfield in East Sussex, beginning my career at Wimbledon College, London.

What makes Grace Dieu Manor School special? There has been a long tradition of outstanding education at Grace Dieu. Parents and visitors to the school soon discover, as I did, Grace Dieu exudes a tangible sense of deeply rooted and timeless spirituality, peace and tranquillity – a refreshing antidote to the busyness of daily life. Its enviable and distinctive Main School building, nestled within 120 acres of grounds, fills one with a sense of awe and wonder. Founded in 1933 by the Rosminian Order, the School has grown to become a leader in 3 to 13 co-education. A successful school is receptive and responsive to the needs of the age, and can, at the same time, cherish those essential characteristics and virtues that we value most in our children and within society at large. I shall build on a legacy of outstanding academic achievement and extra-curricular success and ensure that values are preserved and cultivated anew for each and every pupil. Grace Dieu is rightly proud of its myriad of achievements. These successes are due to the skill, commitment and dedication of the staff, the talent and passion of the pupils and the unerring support of the parents. Love, care and compassion underpins the school community – a community that I very much look forward to leading in my new role from September.

How is the school structured? Grace Dieu Pre-Preparatory Department for 3-7 year olds provides the youngest pupils with a fun, inspiring and safe environment in which to begin their school days. A fantastic team of qualified teachers and nursery nurses ensures children quickly gain selfconfidence and a yearning to discover and explore the world around them. From Year 3 onwards pupils transfer to the senior end of the school. Class sizes remain around 15 – 20. This key ratio ensures each child can be given the optimum, individual attention which, coupled with individual teacher subject specialism ensures pupils make excellent progress in ALL they do.

What are your thoughts about Pastoral Care at Grace Dieu? For me Pastoral Care is the single most important element in the success of any school. Pupils who know they are cared for WILL and DO flourish... Grace Dieu has earned a national reputation among top preparatory schools for their care and commitment given to pupils. Pastoral care is the very touchstone and barometer from which all we do is directed, measured and achieved.

How can we find out more? There is always more to discover! The school website has a wealth of useful information though I assure you that the best way to learn more is to come and see for yourselves! If you have never visited Grace Dieu before, please do. Your first impressions will be immensely positive and, I believe, decisive – just as they were for me! Grace Dieu Manor School Open Days: Saturday September 27th 9.30 – 12 noon & Thursday October 2nd 10 – 3pm. www.thevineleicestershire.co.uk

Wonderful Wistow Maze

Last month we introduced you to the wonderful Wistow Maze and told you all about this years WWI theme and gave you a sneak peak to this years shape (a field cannon) which is a reminder of the 16 million people across the globe that lost their lives in the first world war which was declared 100 years ago! This month we thought we’d fill you in a little more on what a fabulous family day of exploring Wistow Maze can offer you. It is one of the country’s largest maize mazes, set in 8 acres of living maize and sunflower crop and is perfect for all ages, (staff and office outings have become hugely popular so it’s great fun even without the kids!). Pop along and see if you can unravel the Quiz Trail, and find all 12 WWI themed quiz boards hidden amongst the 3 miles of paths. You can go in and out of the giant maze as many times as you like during the day so why not stop for lunch, or playing in the Activity Funyard before re-entering and completing the Quiz Trail. The maze also incorporates 10ft high bridges and viewing towers which give visitors stunning 3D panoramic views over the maze and the beautiful surrounding countryside. The Activity Funyard tests your maze solving skills on a variety of mini mazes, puzzles and table-top activities. A mini maze (also with hidden pictures), as well as 6 minute mazes, rope maze, hoopla, bean bag throwing, photo panel, football shooting game, space hopper track and more... it’s entertainment for all the family whatever your age. Refreshments, ice creams and gifts are also available in the Funyard. Opposite the maze is the Wistow Rural Centre with a cafe/bistro, Mediterranean deli, garden centre, model village (with trains), art gallery and a large variety of other shops. National Forest Wood Fair Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August 2014 - Beacon Hill Country Park

The National Forest Wood Fair at Beacon Hill Country Park is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The event, to be held on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, promises to be bigger and better than ever and with over 100 exhibitors and demonstrators there really is something for everyone. Children can climb trees, try eco art and ranger-led craft activities, paddle a coracle and create forestinspired lotions and potions. Woodworkers will be thrilled to watch the masterclasses in woodturning and woodcarving and learn the tricks of the trade from top greenwood workers. Foodies amongst the audience will love the cookery demonstrations as part of the Wood Fair’s Forest Food Festival.

If you want a great family day out over the Bank Holiday weekend, this is the event for you! The sawdust will fly as chainsaw carvers create works of art out of lumps of wood, while lumberjacks entertain the crowds with races on the cross cut saw, and invite members of the audience to join in the fun! The timber-hauling heavy horses are always a popular attraction. Visitors can relax to live music from Govannan while enjoying some of the delicious locally sourced food and drink on sale in the Forest Food Festival. The National Forest Company will be celebrating the launch earlier this year of the new long distance walking trail, the 75-mile National Forest Way. Make sure you visit their marquee to “walk” the Way with a difference! Some of the chainsaw carvings created during the event go under the hammer for charity in an auction that provides a dramatic conclusion to an exciting day. Profits from the auction go to international charity Tree Aid. Join in the fun who knows, you might pick up a bargain! You can buy tickets in advance online at www. nationalforestwoodfair.co.uk, or from Ashby de la Zouch and Swadlincote Tourist Information Centres, and get an earlybird discount of 20% off all ticket prices. How about a family day out for just £20? This admits two adults and up to three concessions – the concessionary rate includes senior citizens as well as children. The National Forest Wood Fair is organised by the National Forest Company in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, and is supported by local Coalville-based business Vitax, one of the UK’s leading specialists in the manufacture of garden and horticulture products.
