Making A Real Difference To Chernobyl’s Children Chernobyl Children Say Farewell In April 1986, the world’s worst nuclear accident occurred when Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear plant in northern Ukraine exploded sending a deadly cloud of radiation into the atmosphere. 70% of the radioactive fallout landed on neighbouring Belarus contaminating 80% of its land mass. The people of Belarus and Ukraine were exposed to radioactivity 90 times greater than that from the explosion of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, and the United Nations declared it to be the greatest environmental disaster in the history of humanity. Almost three decades after the disaster, the population of Belarus continues to suffer not only from a vast array of health problems, but from wide ranging and far reaching social issues, including a sense of despair at their unknown futures. Through no fault of their own, these people are living with a legacy of ill health, poverty and malnutrition as well as the knowledge that it will be tens of thousands of years before the radiation is depleted and their land is safe again. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is dedicated to relieving the suffering of children whose lives are impacted as a result of the disaster. We are part of a national charity with around 30 satellite groups throughout the country and each year we collectively help approximately 500 Belarusian children each year by providing them with a month long recuperative holiday in the UK. Fresh air, having fun, making friends, nourishing food, essential health checks and above all, lots of loving care are all part of our tried and tested formula for helping these children. Just one month away from their toxic homeland makes a huge difference to their health and wellbeing. Rosy cheeks, smiling faces, laughter, improved health and life-long friendships are just some of the by-products of what we do. On Saturday 31st August, a group of children who have been in Leicestershire for a 4 week respite holiday bade farewell to the volunteer families who have hosted them as part of a recuperative programme run by the charity Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire). The youngsters who come from disadvantaged families living in the Mogilev region of Belarus arrived in the county on 3rd August as part of a 5-year programme designed to improve their general health and give them respite from the conditions they endure in their homeland, which was widely contaminated by radioactive fallout after the 1986 nuclear explosion at the Chernobyl plant in neighbouring Ukraine. During their stay, the children have visited several local attractions and have participated in a daily programme of activities that has included sailing, cycling, a narrow boat trip, a visit to Warwick Castle and horse riding as well as visits to the dentist and optician. Charity spokesman John Buckby said “We have been bringing children to West Leicestershire for recuperative holidays since 2009 and this year we have seen our first group of children complete their final year with us. Our journey together has been an incredible one and it has been extremely rewarding to see what a difference the programme has made to them. We are now seeking volunteer families interested in hosting a child or an English speaking interpreter in their home so that we can offer places to just some of the many children registered with the charity”. For more information visit the charity’s website at www.focc-westleics.webs.com or contact Group Coordinator John Buckby on 01455 285799 or email: john.evolution@btinternet.com

Local Interest INTRODUCING : Loughborough Naturalists Club The club was formed in 1960 by a group of people interested in the local flora and fauna. This small group of people soon became a large group reflecting many interests within the natural world, including all the different groups of plants and animals, from fungi to moths, birds and fish. Even the weather is considered an important subject, affecting, as it does, how the natural world responds to its everlasting changes. The Club, meets at the Church Rooms, Church Lane, Quorn, LE12 8DP, in the village of Quorn, near Loughborough, on the second Saturday evening of each month, at 7.30pm, from September through to April. These evening meetings are supplemented by walks in various interesting locations throughout Leicestershire. The walks are usually held on Wednesday mornings on a regular basis and usually last a couple of hours. The meeting in October is a talk about Bees by Sandra Hart who is a lifelong animal lover with a fascination for insects and has given talks on bees for the past 25 years. During this talk she will be taking us into their hive to find out what they see and do through the year, and how they produce the honey, beeswax, royal jelly and propolis. We will also fly through the air with a young worker, collecting nectar and pollen and learn how bees have lived for the past 70 million years, and how they are struggling now. Sandra will also be bringing some of her skin care products and honey for sale. Anyone who is interested in any of the talks on our programme will be more than welcome to join us for one of our meetings, free of charge. For more details, or if you require a map, contact the Meetings Secretary, Doreen Webster, on 0771 340 9743 or email her at dozzer.lobro@tiscali.co.uk. The Club also produces a quarterly magazine, Heritage, plus a newsletter giving details of the quarterly activities, both of which are available free once you become a member. Monthly Talks: 12th October 2013 - City of Bees by Sandra Hart 9th November 2013 - The Magic of Mushrooms by Patrick Harding 14th December 2013 - A Journey to Antarctica by Pam Darby 11th January 2014 - Wildlife in the Area by Tim Adkin 8th February 2014 - Symbiosis by Ivan Pedley 8th March 2014 - Gardening for Wildlife by Chris Edwards 12th April 2014 - AGM and Members’ Exhibition Evening

National Trust Leicester Association Did you see the TV programme “The Workhouse” which featured famous people who had ancestors who had been in the Workhouse? Many of the general images in the programme were taken at the NT Workhouse at Southwell as it was used as the model workhouse for the 1834 New Poor law. In a new initiative at the NT Workhouse, visitors will be given a glimpse into the world of water, toilets and sewage with a regularly changing series of intriguing facts about this murky world during Victorian times. Subjects will range from how night soil was used to fertilise the vegetable garden and how using rainwater helped prevent water-borne diseases, to the engineering feat that is the huge water tank hidden in the Workhouse cellars, and why locally, in the Southwell area, twin loos with a smaller third loo might often be found. The ability to minimise disease amongst inmates in such close proximity was a constant issue for workhouses and the Southwell Workhouse was seen as a leader in its practices. The Workhouse is open Wed to Sun, 12-5pm till 27 Oct, and 12-4pm 30 Oct to 3 Nov and would make a good day out for October half term. The NT Leicester Association has an evening meeting on Tuesday 8 October when Derek Seaton will present an illustrated talk entitled “A Walk round Victorian Leicester”. The meeting will be held at Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary’s Avenue, Braunstone at 7.30pm. There will be an afternoon meeting on Wednesday 23rd October at St Guthlac’s Memorial Hall, Holbrook Road, Leicester at 2.30pm when David Siddons will present a talk on “The Fascination of the English Language”. Admission to both meetings is NTLA members £2.50, visitors £4.00 including refreshments. For details of the NT Leicester Association, please call 0116 222 9133. Alan Tyler, Chairman.

Local Interest The Monday Club, Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston & Rothley On Monday 9th September, the Membership met to support our customary “Bring and Buy Harvest” event in aid of “The Salvation Army” our Charity for the year 2013. There was a very generous display of fruit and vegetables, various cakes, pastries, tins of biscuits, chocolates and books; everything was speedily sold raising the princely sum of £77.15. After all the activity resembling a “rummage sale” we paused to refresh ourselves with cups of tea and drew the Free Raffle prize which was a box of Lindt Chocolates and won by Elizabeth Meadows, Then commenced our “in house” entertainment; this also was very successful. The first item was a fascinating insight into how Sue Wakerley, our resident Artist of many years, researched and produced stage by stage her Artwork. Sue showed paintings at various stages ranging from photography through to creating outlines and gradually the production of various paintings in the “nearly” finished state to the ultimate finished article. The subjects were various and the audience was left intrigued with the details. We then went on to poetry from various poets including an “Ode to Autumn” written by John Keats and read with feeling by Jennifer Kennington, which reminded us appropriately of the season we have reached after our unusually lovely Summer. Next came a very unusual poem taken from the house of Oliver Cromwell; a copy of which was beautifully read by Diane Rouse; entitled “Tussie Mussies”. These “T.M”s apparently were small nosegays presented to guests of the house and became a popular custom in the 17th Century. The floral/herb contents of the nosegays were understood by the donor and the recipient alike and, of course, could have been hidden messages of love!! We then enjoyed a very special poem written and read by Gill Jefferson dedicated to “Bradgate Park” beautifully written and so appropriate as the Club is situated at the Reservoir end of the Park and so well known to us all. In conclusion I presented my usual miscellany of jokes received from old school friends from all over the world, which produced a great deal of laughter on which to end the afternoon. Our next meeting will take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, on the 14th October, when Mr. Brian Kibble, will present an illustrated talk about Anstey and area, from the 1800s onwards. Do come along to learn more about your local home area – you will be most welcome to come and visit. For enquires please ring 0116 2363467. Ann Farndon

A Vintage Year : The vineyards of France , Italy and Portugal enjoyed excellent weather in 1961 the year that Ashby Wine Circle was formed. Exploring the history of the wine circle will uncover the founder William (Bill ) Pratt who was Adult Tutor of the Community College. The group was formed with a dozen members during an inaugural meeting at Ivanhoe School on 19 October, 1961. Mr. Pratt was appointed Chairman and although no longer a member he attended the 40th and 50th anniversary celebrations. When the group was in its infancy, it turned to similar organisations in Nottingham and Birmingham for guidance as none of its members knew much about wine making. They soon grew in confidence, however, and within two years they had set up an annual show. Usually held in March, at its height an average of 500 bottles of wine were produced, by members, for the show. They would be judged and prizes awarded. Membership fluctuated between twenty and thirty but a nucleus of knowledgeable experts was forming. During the annual shows which were held in Blackfordby Village Hall, an evening dinner would be followed by the presentation of trophies for almost thirty different classes of wines, liquor and even beer. The first non-local trophy to be won by a member was the Solihull Salver by Noreen Perry and she was awarded the accolade in 1970. Noreen became a national wine judge. Holly Ward, on writing a history of the wine circle in 1973 said “She took Ashby Wine Circle to bigger and brighter events and record membership“ Noreen is still a member and celebrated her 93rd birthday in July. Other outstanding wine making members include Len Beniston, Ron Wagstaff, Roland Hill, Alan Poyser, Derek Gutberlet and Graham Venables. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in October, 2011 at The Lyric Rooms when over seventy members, past and present, attended.

Snappers! By Ian We are racing rapidly towards my favourite time of the year for taking photographs. OK you’ve guessed it, it is autumn. It may be a sign that winter is just around the corner but when you see all the wonderful autumn colours on the trees, the fabulous texture of the fallen leaves and the terrific crisp, hopefully dry air it just shouts at me to get the camera ready. You can start in your garden because there is so very much to photograph there why would you want to go overseas. Yes, ok it is warmer in the tropics. Another great place to be locally is Bradgate Park where just as I put this to paper the stags will have not a lot on their minds except the hinds, but, what photogenic opportunities there are there. In the very same localality the trees will be shedding their leaves and as the wind gets up it will be like snowing leaves. Some close-up shots of leaves can not only be quite challenging but very satisfying when it all comes off. The rivers seem to go very quiet at this time of year so you can get decent shots of the coots and their neighbours all of which is so satisfying. Even the cattle in the fields seem to become more photogenic probably because the air is much more stable at this time of year. We will have lost many of our friends as they migrate south to warmer climates but just think it is only a few short months until they come back again. At the same time some 700,000 geese will arrive in the UK from their arctic breeding grounds to the comparatively warmer weather of the UK so it is not all one way traffic.

The Wizard of Oz – Bradgate Drama Society ‘We’re off to see the Wizard’ at Bradgate Drama Society’s production of the Wizard of Oz. This year’s Christmas show promises an exciting musical journey as Dorothy, with her friends the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man, makes her way to the Land of Oz. ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ to Newtown Linford Village Hall for performances at 7.30 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 28th, 29th. and 30th and a matinee on Saturday afternoon at 2.30. Tickets are £7 and although you may be able to get them ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’, you’ll probably be better off ringing Sally on 01530 242263 or by emailing us at: bradgatedrama@gmail.com ‘If I only had a Brain’ I’d be going too!

Third time’s a bloomin’ charm! LOUGHBOROUGH is celebrating for the third year in a row after once again striking gold at the East Midlands in Bloom awards. The town put on another fabulous horticultural spectacle to wow judges of the Best Small City category of the East Midlands accolade. This year’s Bloom entry was not only supported by overall dressing of Loughborough, but by 31 separate community entries to the competition’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards. Last year the town also scooped gold at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom, following success at regional level. Mike Jones, Vice Chairman of the Loughborough in Bloom Board, attended the award presentation in Skegness, along with representatives from a number of the town’s community groups. Mike said: “We are very excited and send our thanks to all the various community groups and individuals who have contributed to this excellent result. It is rare to get three consecutive gold awards, and to be judged best small city in the East Midlands three years running. All of our partners have performed extremely well to produce the wow factor that has so impressed the judges. We must also not forget the contribution of the late Kath Kay, whose guiding hand at the centre was invaluable.” Councillor Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “ Once again residents, businesses, the University and organisations from across Loughborough have shown the town at its best. To win gold two years in a row was amazing, so I am absolutely delighted that we have once again retained our gold standard. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this campaign for their hard work and dedication and for doing the town proud, particularly following the long winter and tough spring we had this year.” Once again, the Loughborough in Bloom effort was supported by community groups, residents, businesses and organisations from across Loughborough, who dedicated their time, effort and funds to ensure the town remained in bloom. This year the theme for the campaign was ‘Edible Britain’ and saw Loughborough University introduce bee hives and share the success of the fruit routes, while residents pressed home-grown apples and planted plums.
