guest editor’s letter

WELCOME What a pleasure it is to be part of the Millennial Issue of Vital VOICE this year. As I type this, I’m sitting in my 4th floor office watching dozens of people climb through airplanes and turrets at the City Museum, and I can’t think of a better environment in which to work and learn. The energy and creativity surrounding our Washington Avenue campus is absolutely contagious. Though we have been in downtown St. Louis since 1947— first as Patricia Stevens College and now as Stevens-The Institute of Business & Arts (or Siba, as we like to call ourselves) — I still think of us as one of the region’s bestkept secrets in higher education. But the buzz is growing; we truly are a great alternative for those of you who don’t see yourselves thriving in a traditional university setting. At Siba, we don’t do things the “traditional” way. If you want to get right in the middle of the local fashion and interior design scene, our small classes and instructors/mentors will give you that opportunity immediately. Even better, we’ve seen those opportunities lead to jobs—over and over again—which is why we all go to college, right?

Recent and upcoming events that our students attend, work and participate in are: Pins and Needles “Emerging Six” design competition (August 11) MAGIC Marketplace in Las Vegas, NV (August 15-17) International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) Unravel competition and fundraiser (Oct. 28) St. Louis Fashion Week HGTV’s Container Homes (Spring 2016) Beyond that, we are very sensitive to the cost of a college education today, and I think you will find that our costs compare very favorably to other colleges and universities both here in St. Louis and nationally. If you think you might enjoy being a part of our cohesive and supportive Siba family, we would love to meet you. Check us out on the web at siba.edu and if you like what you see, schedule a tour of our campus. Don’t wait too long though—our Fall class is filling up fast. Sincerely, Cynthia (Cindy) Musterman, J.D. President, Stevens-The Institute of Business & Arts

STL NIGHTLIFE

United We Stand. That’s the theme for the St. Louis Black Gay & Lesbian Pride Committee’s annual Black Pride Weekend, which takes place August 5-7 and celebrates LGBTQIA people of color. Randy Rafter, President and Chairman of the Board of The Official St. Louis Black Pride, says the event is not just about celebration, but about addressing the issues those in the community face. “It’s important for us to understand that we’re in it for the long haul, that this is not just a moment of time where things are happening,” Rafter says. “It’s a time for us to stand together and stand strong.” St. Louis Black Pride was founded in 1994 as the B-Boy Blues Festival, making it the nation’s second oldest black gay pride organization. The vision of the organization is to provide programming designed to instill pride, celebrate unity and embrace diversity within the LGBTQIA community of St. Louis. Rafter says this year’s pride weekend will see the community more united. The event took one year off in 2014 to restructure. That restructuring consisted of taking a step back, regrouping, getting a new board, rewriting the mission of the organization and focusing more on what the community needs.

“There’s been a lot of problems in the past and we’ve been doing a lot of bridge building within the last couple of years, thanks to which you will see more of a united front in our community,” Rafter explains. “There are so many issues and so many problems that have to be tackled in order to build equity within the community.” He says some of the big epidemics prevalent include HIV/AIDS, obesity, homelessness, poverty and improper education. These issues would be addressed through different programming and services, such as their Financial Literacy Program, where people will be taught how to better manage their money. Leon Augustus Braxton, Black Pride organizer, says another issue that has to be confronted is racism. “We have racism here in our own community,” he says. “I can see it. I can hear it. And every time I do, I try to correct it to make sure that it is not going forward.” Leon says that this year will not just be about conversation but it will, unfortunately, be one of caution due to the recent events that have affected both the black and LGBT community, such as the shooting deaths of black men by police officers. “What we have to do is just be extra cautious,” Leon says.

For Leon, Black Pride means he can celebrate who he is with people who are part of the same culture as him. He says that sometimes people have asked why Black Pride is even needed. “Black Pride is necessary because we as black people, especially LGBTQIA black people, celebrate differently and we celebrate with our own rituals, our own ways, our own culture, our own traditions,” he explains. “We want to keep those traditions alive and we want to move forward. We want to enrich and empower and uplift each other in our black community here in St. Louis.” The weekend will kick off on Friday night with an event where people will come together to celebrate the community. All early ticket holders will have the opportunity to vote for the entertainer they want to see at the event. Two entertainers will be chosen. One will perform and one will host. Finally, the weekend will conclude on Sunday with the Black Pride Festival in The Grove. Leon says that he is proud to see LGBTQIA people of color out and about in the community, especially during PrideFest. “At PrideFest, I found so many people of color there enjoying themselves and having a good time,” he says. “We have a lot of LGBT people of color that we’re looking forward to serving.” V thevitalVOICE.com

Blow Me Blowing Up KC

Use your hands and gently tug it, keeping one grasped at the bottom while the other works it out by pulling up and down. This will make your job easier later on. Once it’s elongated, firmly hold the base, take a deep breath, and press your lips to it to form a tight seal. Go slowly, you don’t want to get light-headed. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. If you need to take a break, grip it with your hands to maintain the tension. Never use your teeth. Take another deep breath and get down to business. You should see it growing bigger, the pressure building and building. This is a delicate process and it could explode at any moment. When the resistance is there, slow down just a bit, take one more deep breath and then – take the balloon, tie it off, and start blowing some more. Molly Munyan and Peyton Westfall know that form is everything when it comes to balloons. That’s why they’re blowing up in Kansas City, one inflatable masterpiece at a time. Check out how these two craftsmen are making this crazy cool art form their own. 16

Molly: Once a theatre kid, Molly Munyan never had a problem being in the spotlight. Today, she’s turning heads with her one-of-a-kind balloon dresses, hand-made spectacles she wears down the street as her own marketing masterpiece. “It’s definitely been a jaw-dropping experience,” Munyan laughs. “Reactions vary – I get funny looks, usually from men, and it can range from amused to general confusion. A lot of time people wonder where it came from or they really just don’t get it. Others stop to take pictures with me and are in complete fascination.” The career choice seems to have worked out well for Munyan – she now has a diverse range of balloon offerings including live entertainment, balloon twisting/décor for parties and events, and of course, her well-known dresses. Munyan actually garnered media attention last year with her Royals-inspired looks. Dress ideas come to Munyan all the time, she says. She sketches them out as they come to her and uses those sketches as inspiration. But, she admits, “it never looks exactly like it does on paper.” “I’ll be making one and something just isn’t working, or I’ll need more balloons here, or I have a cool idea to add something on, so I just kind of adapt to it. I’m faster at

KC NIGHTLIFE making dresses now that I’ve done a bunch of them. It’s all about finding your Zen. I think my most extravagant one might have taken like 15 hours.” Under the dresses can be a little breezy, as she wears just corsets and booty shorts. She’s always prepared for possible poppage too, keeping a few extra balloons handy to prepare on the spot and twist back into place. But Munyan is more than just a balloon artist – she’s also a resourceful entrepreneur. She’s had a “Pop Couture” fashion show, led balloon art camps and even wrote a one-woman show (Unpoppable Molly) and performed it on the East Coast. Munyan’s recently been approached by a production company about the possibility of being in TV, something which Munyan says she could see herself doing in the future. A personal goal of hers is also to make Ellen DeGeneres a balloon hat.

Peyton: From banquets to bouquets, Peyton Westfall has done it all. He’s been in the business for 16 years and, with an expanding network and client base, opened his own storefront this year, where he can meet with clients, have bigger events and showcase his work. It’s also nice not having to lug giant helium tanks up to your apartment and store them in your living room. Westfall entered the world of inflatables after dabbling in magic and juggling as a teenager. He found a balloon kit and started teaching himself how to make simple animals, eventually twisting down the road of blown-up, whimsical wonders. “I love entertaining because you can make people happy then and there,” Westfall says. “But costumes are my favorite thing to do.” He’s made dresses for drag queens as well as Halloween costumes, including looks from Alice in Wonderland, Dr. Who, Lion King, Super Mario, and more. He’s also created wedding backdrops, stage décor, centerpieces, and custom balloon art like a five-foot-long motorcycle and an adorable stork for a baby delivery. “I never really consider myself an artist because I can’t put pen to paper,” Westfall says. We think otherwise. “I just have an eye for it. Most of the time the idea is just in my head, but it’s all about numbers to make sure it comes out right. Sometimes you need to add a few, sometimes you need to pop a few.” V thevitalVOICE.com

SUC CESS FR O M T HE OTH ER SIDE: SIBA text TYLER BIERMAN art DARIN SLYMAN

The world is a very different place now than it was even ten years ago. Gas prices are higher, the economy is as weak as it’s ever been and careers are becoming harder and harder to come by. It’s because of all these changes that we’re starting to see an evolution in students; the way they approach their education and how they go about starting their careers. In fact, some are finding that the traditional four-year-universities simply aren’t for them. No, these Millennials are looking for faster, more flexible programs that won’t leave them drowning in student loans. That’s where Stevens – Institute of Business and Arts (Siba) comes in. text KALEIGH JURGENSMEYER art DAISY BUCKËT

18

August 2016

Stevens – Institute of Business and Arts, or Siba is an alternative college that specializes in a small, focused number of programs that include interior design, paralegal studies, business administration, graphic design, fashion merchandising and retail management. They pride themselves on their smaller class sizes, which provide their students with individualized attention in the classroom. Additionally, many of their professors are industry leaders with real connections in their career fields. To top it all off, their programs are flexible, allowing students to attend fulltime or part-time, and their credit hours cost a fraction of what the larger universities offer. But it’s easy to simply list off the pros and cons, we wanted to get a closer look at what is drawing millennial students to Siba. That’s how we met Chris Schillinger and Lyndsey Mudro. Schillinger is a current interior design student and Mudro is a current retail management and fashion merchandising student. Both are working their way through Siba’s programs and working to build careers that fit their lifestyles. To start off, we had to know what initially drew them to Siba. For Schillinger, it was their flexibility in working with his incoming credit hours. “As a transfer student, I had some anxiety about where I was academically but, the staff has always been inspiring and supportive,” Schillinger says. “Another factor was definitely Siba’s hands-on approach and their sense of treating you like family. I really have had a great experience during my short time at Siba.

STL ENTERTAINMENT Powered by:

explorestlouis.com/lgbt

To learn more about Stevens – Institute for Business and Arts, visit their website at www.siba.edu. “I also preferred the smaller class sizes,” Mudro continues. “There’s always new people coming in every quarter, so you’re not always seeing the same people like you’ve seen from high school. There’s always new faces and new opportunities coming up for you to get a job in your field.” Mudro understands why these types of schools are becoming more and more popular. “It’s great for Millennial students today because they always update their curriculum, show new artwork the students make, and keep up with all the trends or news that go on today.” “I think another big part of it is that they provide flexible schedules for students and building those schedules is actually very simple,” Schillinger says. “They’re also located downtown on Washington Avenue, which is great place for me to pull inspiration from.” One of Siba’s biggest draws as an institution is their smaller classroom sizes. In fact, the average student to teacher ratio is only 9 to 1. For Mudro, it makes her education feel more meaningful and personal. “With the smaller class sizes, I feel more comfortable talking with the teacher during class and not having to worry about a dozen other kids in the class just staring at you,” she explains. “I’m more able to be myself with a few people I see multiple times a day who won’t judge me.”

Schillinger continues, “The smaller classroom sizes allow students and professors to have more in-depth discussions about subjects. I have also built relationships with the professors that will last far past graduation and into the field.” Schillinger, for example, has already begun to reap the benefits of his education at Siba. “So far, I have had some amazing opportunities through my connections with my professors. I recently helped with a project for HGTV Container Homes. I also joined the Missouri East Chapter ASID (American Society of Interior Design) Board as their Student Representative by recommendation of one of my professors.” In addition to these achievements, Schillinger has landed a job in his field, working for Restoration Hardware. As for Mudro, because of Siba she’s been able to broaden her horizons through opportunities she wouldn’t have had otherwise. “My education so far has gotten me to go on new trips for my fashion experience like MAGIC, a huge fashion trade show in Vegas. I’m still learning and exploring my options but I’m excited to see where else my education with Siba’will take me.” It’s starting to become clear that what many Millennials are looking for is farther away from the traditional college experience. They thrive under a more focused, personalized curriculum that focuses on putting them face-to-face with professors that can really make a difference in their futures. If this sounds like you, Siba may be just what you’re looking for. V thevitalVOICE.com

Bern Victims: What’s Next For Sanders’ Squad?

O

ver the past year, we have been the audience for one of the most exciting presidential campaigns in recent memory. Among the heap of traditional and forgettable politicians, we’ve had the third Bush to run for president (and the first to fail miserably), a seemingly sleepy surgeon in Ben Carson and, of course, the reality show star/unstoppable bigot, Donald Trump. In a race filled with some of the most interesting—and sometimes downright crazy—candidates, there was one wild card: Bernie Sanders, the Socialist Democrat who ran on a platform of giving the system back to the people. It’s this stance that inspired a new generation of voters to get out and make their views heard, but why? What is it about Sanders that brings out the most in Millennials and, perhaps more importantly, what will they do now that he’s effectively conceded to Clinton? For Tom Krenning, a 24-year-old project manager who’s worked with STL4Bernie, it’s his consistency, as well as his background as an activist, that appeals to his Millennial sensibilities. “He has had the same beliefs for more than 20 years and knows what it is to be an activist and an organizer. He knows that activists have an obligation to

text TYLER BIERMAN art DONKEYHOTEY/FLICKR

pressure politicians and push for the tough conversations.” Lindsay Ohlemeier, a 22-year-old barista, continues the sentiment. “I feel like he’s actually listening to people and has stayed steadfast over decades of political work. He’s just doing what he believes is right, and that’s so much more genuine than the other candidates.” A big part of what seems to draw Millennials to Sanders is his perceived honesty. As Alexander Bonney, a 22-year-old Web Developer, puts it: “He’s a politician who represents my values and best interests in a field where virtually nobody represents my values or best interests.” But with Sanders backing away from the race, where does that leave Millennials? Will they #StaySanders or will they side with another candidate? According to our small pool of Millennials, the majority of votes are very likely going to Clinton, albeit begrudgingly. As for the rest of our Millennials, there was a small percentage that are looking to Jill Stein and a few who were still unsure; caught in an ethical dilemma between supporting Clinton just to keep Trump out or “wasting” their vote on a third party

candidate. One of our millennials even described the predicament as “choosing between Voldemort and Sauron.” As for STL4Bernie, the organization has decided to transition into Mobilize Missouri, an effort focused on the platforms that Sanders stands for, but on the local and state level. And the burning question: How are Sanders supporters taking the news that he’s endorsed Clinton? It may not surprise you that the answers range from simple disappointment to “a stab in the back” for our Millennials. David McDonald, a 24-yearold Native English Teacher, responded with a calm understanding: “I’m not surprised at all and I support his decision. Him holding out for so long meant that Hillary changed some of her platform to include some of his ideas, which I think is great. I hope his endorsement of Hillary will unite the party a little bit more.” This seems to be a good middle ground for Sanders supporters. While they may not have gotten exactly what they wanted, the fact that they’ve made this new public opinion known may make a difference, maybe not today or in the near future, but somewhere down the line. How did you discover YouTube?

There was a girl whose video was featured on the front page and she had a million views. I couldn’t even fathom that. I saw that she was replying to comments so I said, “Hey, I’m 12. I want to be a singer when I get older.” She told me to upload a music video of me singing her song. So I did, and that’s how I got started. So it was always your plan to leap from YouTube to a music career? Yes. For me YouTube was a place that I knew I could sing for more people than I could in real life. I ended up getting a couple hundred views on that first video overnight, and that was already more people than I had performed for in real life. It kind of clicked in my head that this was the way to be heard. Do you think it’s necessary for YouTube stars to eventually make that leap? For me it has been a combination of the two, between new and old media. I do a lot of stuff online, but then I also wanted to something in the traditional route and be able to go to awards shows and put out full-length albums. Those are the things that I still value and appreciate. For me, I wanted to do a mixer of both new and old media, but I think that you can completely have a very fulfilling and successful career these days solely online.

And your music has really struck a chord with people, especially those coming out. Was that always a goal? I think it was more of a natural reaction. I am really thankful that I came out before I started making music professionally. It meant that I could write honestly. Only one of the songs on the album is LGBT-themed (Heaven). It’s about coming out. Most of the album is pop songs about relationships, family and friends. People tend to put them in the LGBT category because I’m gay, but those songs aren’t necessarily about that. I completely understand and appreciate it. I’m really thankful that by just singing openly about what’s going on in my gay life, it’s helpful to other people. You mentioned that the inspiration for your lyrics come from relationships, family and friends, but what about your sound? In terms of sound, I listen to a lot of music. I get overwhelmed when I realize how much amazing music is out there. There are so many artists—classic artists—that I haven’t heard about and I have yet to discover. I finally got around to listening to Joni Mitchell a couple months ago and I fell in love. The whole world knew about Joni Mitchell except for me. When I think about that, I get really overwhelmed because there’s amazing music in the world that I want to consume, but I need to just keeping doing it. So, I think that my music is a combination of every influence in my life from really big ones to very small ones.

Do you see a shift in how people consume music? Music is in its most exciting space that it has ever been. It is more accessible to people then ever. It’s now more about personal taste. We are not being shoved with music that we are supposed to like. You can venture online and find music that you like personally, and build your playlist from there. Without radio, an artist can still strike a chord with people.

Joni’s also been a main stay at The GRAMMY Awards, and word is you’re the hot pick for Best New Artist category. It’s so weird because I haven’t even thought about that. I get nervous, and I don’t want to jinx it. You’re the second person who has spoken to me about it in twenty minutes. S Now my hands are sweating at the thought. I don’t even know what to say.

How do you feel being nominated as a musician after being well known for so long just through your YouTube career?

Was that a sample of what people can expect from your upcoming tour?

That category has changed a lot over the years. I can’t remember that exact definition, but I get it: I still feel like a new artist. I’m changing so much and growing so much that I need to keep reintroducing myself. I want my second album to sound completely different than my first. I want to keep growing.

Well, we are going to be playing more songs. I think visually, as well, this tour is going to be such a huge step up. That is one of my main goals; I want this to be mind-blowing to people.

Do you think that laid a lot of work to the success of your first album?

The show is actually very individual and different from anything that is out there. It feels really intimate to me. I have a very strong connection with my audience and every night is completely different. Experiencing that, I feel like that’s what really sets it apart: the vibe. You have to come and feel and see it to know what I mean. I’m really proud of it.

Creatively, it really laid the groundwork for the album. It took me a second to figure out what I wanted the album to be. I needed to take that time. I really like EPs. I feel really comfortable in them because I feel like you can get across, in six tracks for example, a sound, a message and a vibe, but there is absolutely zero filler. I like the idea of being in sync and tactful. The album was just an extrapolated version of that where I felt like I could really express myself, tell an entire story and paint an entire picture. I saw that you performed at the Billboard Awards. Was that your first major awards show performance? It actually was my first time even attending an awards show. It was really overwhelming. I cried before and after the performance. It was probably one of the best days of my life. It’s almost been a month since it happened, and it still feels like it happened yesterday. I’m still trying to process it. I haven’t actually watched the performance though, I don’t know if I ever will. Maybe later, but I get nervous just to even watch it.

What artist would you compare your shows to?

I know you’re donating a portion of your sales to The Ally Coalition, which I’d never heard of. What are your plans on tying them in with the tour? I don’t want to say anything because we haven’t confirmed or figured out the logistics. We have really cool ideas to have ways to help out the local LGBT community in each city that we visit. I know that we want to have gender-neutral bathrooms backstage at all the venues for my band and crew. There is a range of different ways that we can make it the safest and most helpful place. What’s your favorite song to perform on tour? Probably “Heaven,” which I wrote about my coming out experience. Looking out into the crowd and singing that song every night is definitely something that has actually changed me as a person. What about Halloween in Australia? Do you have any Halloween stories? Halloween in Australia is so lame. Like, it doesn’t exist. I tried to trick-or-treat when I was younger, and people would just slam the door in your face. Halloween is an American holiday. Some people would be nice and get us chewing gum or something. I definitely want to experience a real American Halloween. I want to touch on the fact that your show here in St. Louis is on Halloween night. Any thoughts on dressing up? That didn’t click in my head until you just said it, and I just got so excited. I am going to start talking to my manager and devising a plan. I am really excited about that now! And we’re excited to see what you come up with, Troye.V T h e S u b u r b i a To u r s t o p s a t T h e P a g e a n t o n M o n d a y, O c t o b e r 3 1 . T i c k e t s a t ThePageant.com.

Unfiltered: Guide To The Perfect Online Profile text KALEIGH JURGENSMEYER

You want your profile picture filtered like your water – clean, clear and natural. Let’s not look like Kylie Jenner and Mila Kunis made a love baby. Everyone knows your lips and eyes aren’t that big. Plus, research tells us that people would rather see you; even with a slightly crooked nose or that dimple you hate. Why do people like this? It’s more about what they don’t like. Because “trying too hard” shows and people can see that within ten seconds of looking at your picture and reading your bio. Shirtless gym selfie? Just stop. Humanitarian pic with a bunch of under-privileged children surrounding you? Don’t even get me started. There’s a wrong way and a right way to market yourself when it comes to social media. So here’s some tips to start making online dating your bitch. 1. Give people more than one picture to look at. Three is the magic number. Try using the ABCs for it: an active pic, best pic and crew pic. Active: Have one where you’re outside or simply doing something you love. Best: This can be a flattering solo shot of you, or a group pic where you look and feel you look your best. Smiling is preferred. Crew: Take one with your friends or family. People want to know that you have other people in your life that actually like you and think you’re cool/not a psycho. Other good options: Everyone loves pictures with an adorable animal. Key word is with. Don’t just put a picture of your cat, for the love of God. Pictures of you supporting a cause can also be a great conversation starter, so consider your favorite photo from AIDS Walk or PrideFest. 2. Include a mini description of yourself. Who, what, and where are good places to start. Who: Name. That’s easy. What: Think nouns – your job, what you like to do, favorite foods, etc. Ex. Coffee lover, dog enthusiast, Blues fan, writer & editor.

Where: This can be a couple different things. For simplicity, just use the city where you’re living. It sucks to stumble across a cute guy only to find out they live in Japan. If you want to add more detail, include your hometown or include where you’d love travel to in the future. Other good options: Say something funny. But funny is good only if you’re actually funny. Try the line on a least three people first. If all you get is a half-laugh, just scratch it out. You can also just use a fun fact (keep it a one-line fact), add your age or include your preferred pronouns.

DO

Drinking wine with friends Tasteful full body shot lookin’ cute Doing something fun outside.

3. Use the 24-hour rule. If you’re serious about having a good dating profile, make sure to respond to someone’s message within a day. No one wants to be waiting a week to hear from you, and at that point, this said person could’ve already been on a date and fallen in love and banged some other dude. Ok, maybe not that extreme. But maybe, you never know. On the flip side, if someone waited a week to get back to you after you reached out, proceed with caution. It’s a judgment call, of course, but you deserve the respect you’d give to someone else. If they’re interested, you’ll know early on. Now let’s say someone messaged you and you’re not interested. This 24-hour rule still applies. It’s best to nip it in the butt right away. Don’t drag it out. Don’t lead them on and play nice online. V

STYLE

DOORSTEP DESIGN text JILL FIRNS

Let’s t alk about shopping. A beloved pastime in our consumer society, spending time at the mall can either be a quick jaunt or an hours-long excursion. But what if you’re not a fan of the crowds, the fitting rooms and, more often than not, the disappointment? Enter in the new age of shopping – delivery systems. They’re basically an introvert’s dream. You’ve probably heard about friends or family having shoes, makeup, or food delivered right to their doorstep, but what about fully realized, customized outfits? We took a look at a few of the available options. Coming to shoppers as the “next frontier of retail,” we have New York City’s Bombfell – a unique men’s shopping experience based heavily on personalization. Bombfell is great for the guy who sports an open mind to try something new, but is also willing to build a trusting relationship with their stylist. When you sign up for Bombfell, you’re paired with an “insanely knowledgeable stylist” that is committed to providing the best in customer service. One highlight that stands out about Bombfell is that you’re able to review the items your stylist selects before the box ships. That way, you can most accurately build a wardrobe that best represents you. If you love beautiful designs from small companies with great values, our next suggestion is Frank + Oak. Much like Bombfell, when you subscribe to Frank + Oak’s stylist option, you’re matched with an expert. What Frank + Oak excels at, however, is building full outfits for you from their

very own collections. Looking for classic Oxford shirts and button-downs? Most of theirs come in a variety of classic or fun prints. On our hunt we also happened across Men’s Style Lab, which bills itself as “A concierge clothing service for men” that helps support men’s confidence. Along with several brand names mentioned, you can get a feel for the items you might receive. As with the above two delivery services, you’ll have an expert stylist matched with your account, and Men’s Style Lab flaunts its ability to listen, adjust, and alter its offerings to best fit your size and taste. Do you need extra time to try on your items? No worries – shoot them an email and they’ll gladly extend the time to spend with your selection. We’re here to remind you that it is so easy to be stylish these days. You don’t have to set foot in a mall – you don’t even have to leave your home. V thevitalVOICE.com

nothing is more laid-back than a comfy t-shirt. Not all t-shirts are created equal, and a couple local St. Louis companies have been paving the way to not only elevate your wardrobe’s basics, but also to help you showcase your STL pride.

STL-style

Arch apparel

STL-Style is the older of the two businesses, created in 2001 as a hobby for brothers Jeff and Randy Vines. By 2009, the brothers were cranking out more than 40 designs and felt it was time to make their hobby into a full-time gig. Focusing their efforts on celebrating St. Louis was a no-brainer, and Randy tells us that hometown pride is staging a major comeback across the nation.

Fairly brand new to the stylin’ and profilin’ STL scene is Arch Apparel, which was just founded in September of 2015. Their Heart STL design is cropping up all over town on locals, and their commitment to clean, graphic and eye-catching appeals to those with a classic style. Although they have some great local team designs, Arch Apparel also has styles to sport all year-round.

At the forefront of the comeback are indeed Millennials, because they’re the most active members on the social media scene and help to effortlessly bring attention to brands like STL-Style. Jeff filled us in on what helps make STL-Style successful not only with Millennials, but with all generations: “The t-shirt is probably the most enduring fashion statement of our generation - it’s a very powerful form of communication and self expression – and we are ultimately trying to help change the way people think about St. Louis.”

Printed on American-made threads, Arch Apparel is available for purchase online and in shop at JuJu B’s in Chesterfield.

With catchy quips like “Fo’ Chouteau,” STL-Style is out to potentially highlight all of the 79 neighborhoods. But if you’re looking to sport a shirt that packs quite the punch and delivers a “no-nonsense” sense of pride for our city, pick up their “Saint Fuckin’ Louis.” As for their neighborhood home base, you can find them settled in on Cherokee Street, where they crank out not only t-shirt designs, but also operate a one-stop shop for custom graphic design services, screen-printing and promotional products. Stop by to catch the brothers or their beloved team in action.

They are in the process of moving towards a brick-and-mortar location, but because they’re looking to open without the help of investors. We love their commitment to being honest and accessible, and co-founder JoJo Prapaisilapa tells us that the design process for many of their creations starts on simple pen and paper. Offering both men’s and women’s styles in everything from tank tops to long-sleeved tees, there’s something for everyone, including STL-native, World Cup champion and all-around soccer powerhouse, Lori Chalupny. Arch Apparel teamed up with TEDxGateway / TEDxTALKS over at Washington University and printed off a limited edition, soccerinspired design inspired by Chalupny. Next time you’re ready to pick up a new t-shirt for yourself, or the perfect gift for a pal, stop on by Cherokee Street to say hi to STLStyle, or shop online with Arch Apparel. V thevitalVOICE.com

Social Media Darlings of text PENELOPE WIGSTOCK

2016

Whether we like it or not, social media is woven into the fabric of American culture. In its early days, I treated it like a bar trick that resurfaces every so often at public events: I largely ignored it and hoped it would just go away. When I realized no such thing was going to happen, I treated it like pornography—a bit tentatively at first, but then when I realized how much pleasure I could derive from it, I went in balls deep. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram: the list goes on and on.

W h o a r e t h e c u r r e n t fav e s o f o u r s o c i a l m e d i a g a l a x y ?

YouTube Several artists have more YouTube subscribers than Taylor Swift, but I could give fewer fucks. It’s all about Taylor. Whether she’s lamenting about her latest romantic disaster or lamenting about previous romantic disasters, she demands that you give her your full attention. Her videos range from cutesy “Shake it Off ” to the uber-elegant and psychotic “Blank Space.” Membership to the “squad” isn’t mandatory, but like the Zika virus, she isn’t going away soon.

instagram This one pains me. Who has the most followers on Instagram? It’s none other than my arch nemesis: Selena Gomez. Rather than dwell on our ongoing feud (she fucking KNOWS what she did!), I will take the high road and congratulate her on her stellar success as a recording artist and pop culture superstar. She dated Justin Bieber, so I take that into account when I assess her mental condition. But she still knows what she did, bitch!

facebook Katy Perry has more than 71 million Twitter followers. I go back and forth on this one .On the one hand, she has a few cutesy dance songs that are mildly entertaining. On the other hand, there was that Super Bowl appearance a few years back. You know the one- it was an epic train-wreck. I mean like, “did they actually pay her to do this shit,” level train-wreck.She also dated John Mayer. So, I’m gonna have to say NO to this Little Firework.

twitter According to CNBC, the celebrity with the most Facebook “likes” in 2015 was soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo. The name didn’t ring any bells, so I Google imaged him. The one thing he and I have in common is that we both spend most of our days with balls flying at our faces. They tell me that three packets of smelling salts were needed to revive me after I viewed a snap of him in his glorious undies.V

TEXT DIETA PEPSI ART KEVIN SCHMIDT

You come home late (or early) from a night out on the town, perhaps a little tipsy, and you are starving. So, you stumble and make your way to the fridge and fling open both the freezer and fridge doors to see what you have. You pull out everything you can get your hands on. To see if you have anything else, you trip over the dog and rest against the pantry. You open it up and see more items that sound appetizing, at least in the moment. You gather up your treasures and set them on the kitchen counter and access your booty. You bob and weave until you come up with some tasty treats with a twist. Here are some of the late night “after the bar” snacks that are quick and easy.
