publisher’s Letter 2014 has been quite the year. We started out promoting the evolution of LGBT media. Evolve is exactly what we have done. Not only has Vital VOICE expanded statewide, but also our society has evolved with the progressions of marriage equality and non-discrimination policies throughout the region. We could not be more pleased with all of the advancements both with Vital VOICE and with the political equality scope. This year has also seen a few bumps in the road. What with the recent election and the Ferguson uprising, inequality has definitely reared its ugly head. That alone tells us that our community’s involvement and engagement is even more crucial than ever. The work continues. Even here at Vital VOICE, we’ve seen the departure of our art director and content manager this year. We are so appreciative of their contribution to LGBT media for our region. However, it’s time to create a new era for this company. We are so excited for this next chapter. Our company has successfully expanded and we have a new groove with new people to carry us forward. 2015 will be an exciting and a nonstop growth year for Vital VOICE. We look forward to a year of being social, influential, aspirational and cultural. We continue our long-standing mission of bringing you modern Life + Style LGBT media, and look forward to rolling out additional elements to our company. We wish to thank all of our readers and welcome more audiences as we move onward. None of this could be achieved with out our amazing clients, advertisers, supporters and friends. This has truly been a wonderful year, and to that we say Cheers 2014!

Cheers

A Good Season for Marriage in Missouri Jeffrey A. Mittman Executive Director, ACLU of Missouri Illustration by Sam Sanchez

Written by

Fall is typically a great season for weddings in Missouri, but I predict that Fall 2014 will go down in history as being especially spectacular. I’m not talking about wedding dates, but dates of historical importance to gay and lesbian couples. After all, it is the season when marriage equality came to Missouri. Sept. 25, 2014

Let’s start with Thursday, Sept. 25. That was when oral arguments were heard in Barrier v. Vasterling, Missouri’s landmark case fighting for the recognition of same-sex marriages performed outside of the state of Missouri. The American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri filed this lawsuit days before Valentine’s Day. Seven of the 10 plaintiff couples, many of their friends and family members, and a throng of journalists filled the courtroom in Jackson County in Kansas City. The bailiff instructed those in the packed courtroom to turn off their cell phones, but recanted a few minutes later and said that the judge would allow tweets and texts. This news added to the excitement in the courtroom, which was already palpable. Tony Rothert, the legal director of the ACLU of Missouri, said it was a career highlight to be one of the attorneys responsible for giving our plaintiffs their day in court. Although none took the stand, the couples bravely opened their lives to let Missouri know that discrimination against loving, committed couples ends up harming families. Tony pointed out that Missouri has traditionally recognized the legal marriages of all couples performed in other states, including marriages of first cousins, common law marriages, and marriages of minors. It was simply wrong to treat same-sex families differently by refusing to recognize their legal marriages. As the hearing wrapped up, Judge J. Dale Youngs said he

10

December 2014

would make a decision as quickly as possible and he did. Just eight days later, he ordered that the marriages of all legally married couples must be recognized by the state of Missouri.

Oct. 3, 2014

Oct. 3 Judge Youngs said that Missouri must recognize not only the marriages of our plaintiff couples, but those of all same-sex Missouri couples who have been legally married outside of the state. The state court ruling was a personal win for our 10 courageous couples. Even more important, it was a win for the whole state because it struck down a discriminatory law.

Oct. 6, 2014

Judge Youngs’ decision on Friday was made even sweeter on Monday, when Attorney General Chris Koster announced he would not pursue an appeal. He obviously recognized our constitution obligates Missouri to recognize marriages from other states, as our state has historically done and it would be a waste of money to continue the fight. After all, at that point more than half of the states allowed gay men and lesbians to marry.

Oct. 9, 2014

On Oct. 9, Missouri’s Barrier v. Vasterling decision continued to reap benefits. The Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan, which provides health care benefits to about 96,500 Missouri employees, retirees and family members, had opened coverage to same-sex spouses.

Missouri now recognizes

thousands of couples as legally wed

Also, on Oct. 9, the ACLU of Missouri sent a polite, but firm, letter to the Ozark Fire District to inform them of their obligation to offer spousal benefits to married couples, regardless of their sexual orientation. Because this ruling is so new, there are sure to be many questions.

Nov. 5, 2014

St. Louis Circuit Judge Rex M. Burlison ruled on behalf of the City of St. Louis in Missouri v. Jennifer Florida, the lawsuit over the City’s issuance of marriage licenses to four couples on June 25, 2014. Recorder of Deeds Jennifer Florida began issuing marriage licenses again to same-sex couples in the City of St. Louis.

Nov. 6, 2014

Because of Judge Burlison’s ruling, the St. Louis County recorder of deeds began issuing marriage licenses.

Nov. 7, 2014

U.S. District Judge Ortrie Smith declared Missouri’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional with his decision in the ACLU of Missouri’s marriage license lawsuit, Lawson v. Jackson County. Later that day, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders directed the Jackson County Recorder of Deeds to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

What’s next?

It would be nice for engaged gay and lesbian couples, and their wedding planners, to know exactly when all counties in Missouri will issue marriage licenses and allow marriages of same-sex couples. Will it be this week or two years from now? Given the rapid changes we’ve seen since the Supreme Court win in June 2013 in the ACLU’s Edie Windsor case, Missouri could be issuing marriage licenses in the remaining 111 counties by the time this article goes to print. Regardless, the ACLU and our many LGBT partners will continue to fight the discrimination against LGBT families in Missouri. We’ve taken a giant step down the aisle with marriage equality. However, there are many areas of the state where LGBT people are vulnerable to discrimination, so we need to work on passing the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act. For now, let’s celebrate the wins along the way and raise a toast to the thousands of couples that Missouri recognizes as legally wed and congratulate the many others who are now planning Missouri weddings. Here’s to a bright 2015!

As the year comes to an end, let’s take a moment and reflect on how victorious 2014 has been for the LGBT community – both across the globe and here at home. Marriage equality is now legalized in 33 states, and numerous other states have struck down anti-LGBT ordinances while President Obama continues to push for LGBT rights. We are seeing more and more politicians voicing their support, and even the entertainment industry is taking a step in the right direction. Every year has the good, the bad and the ugly, but 2014 was undoubtedly a monumental success. Although it might seem we are coming out ahead, there is still a lot more to be done. We will not stop and rest until LGBT equality is fully recognized in all 50 states. Think of what can be achieved in the years to come! Kentucky’s ban on recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states is ruled unconstitutional.

LEZ DANCE is a monthly dance party born out of a need for a space for women and a need to dance. Lola van Ella and Jeez Loueez attended a lesbian dance party in another area and the wheels started turning. They knew they could produce something extraordinary back in St. Louis. Van Ella posted about LEZ DANCE on Facebook and it caught Kristen Goodman’s eye. Goodman had noticed a similar need and was putting her own lesbian party in motion. She reached out, and Goodman, Loueez and van Ella joined forces. The team that currently produces LEZ DANCE was born. Each party takes place on the first Friday of the month. Their first event was in May and had over 300 people. It was clear that they hit on something the community would enjoy. Each event since then has been similarly well-attended. The party includes great music, great specialty drinks and great gogo dancers. Each month has a different theme, sometimes in conjunction with the season, but often the theme is whatever sounds like a good time. Past themes include “Dirty Detention,” “The Vegas Strip” and “90s Rage.” The next LEZ DANCE, which takes place on Dec. 5 at 2720 Cherokee St., has a “Neverland” theme. As more and more people hear about LEZ DANCE, people get more and more into the themes. People pull out all of the stops and go all in on their costumes. Loueez, van Ella and Goodman get together every couple of months to decide the next few themes for LEZ DANCE. They are currently talking

about future ideas such as “Masquerade Ball,” “Pajama Party” or popular TV shows like “Orange is the New Black.” They want to encourage people to get into it and they are always open to suggestions—whether it is theme ideas or anything else. “We want to keep it fresh and fun,” Goodman says. “It is a dance party first and foremost—we want to keep people dancing. We love hearing feedback from people. Anyone is welcome to share their ideas on social media or come up to as at a LEZ DANCE.” In the future, the team would love to take LEZ DANCE on the road. Jeez Loueez lives part time in Chicago, so that is a destination option for 2015. Other possible cities include Kansas City, Columbia or Springfield. While LEZ DANCE is geared towards LGBT women, anyone is welcome and many different people show up. “I am most proud of the diverse crowd,” Goodman explains. “I love being able to look out at the crowd and see all ages, all races, all genders. They’re all partying and having a great time.” “At LEZ DANCE, you’ll see a whole lot of sweaty, sexy, dancing people,” van Ella says. Mark your calendars for “Neverland” on Friday, Dec. 5 at 9:00 p.m. While you’re at it, mark every first Friday at 9:00 p.m. LEZ DANCE has a lot of exciting surprises planned for 2015 and you’re not going to want to miss it. Handmade ribbons, bows and ornaments aren’t just for Christmas trees anymore- they look just as great on your chandelier! Additions like these add a holiday finishing touch to a classic lighting fixture, and the result is a warm and inviting dining space. Under the chandelier, cake plates, candy trays and candleholders from the Mark Roberts Christmas Collection can be used to add stylish taste to your holiday dining table.

Sometimes more is definitely more! Handmade Santa dolls, sparkling tassels, bejeweled ornaments and clean, white lights are a few of the highlights of this stunningly decorated tree. With a simple color-scheme, you have a better ability to add more dramatic pieces that are still cohesive and stand out together.

When it comes to the place setting, it’s the simple yet significant pieces that really show a great attention to detail. Bejeweled napkin holders and other small table accessories give a classy finishing touch to your table.

Take a break from shopping and enjoy the décor in MaryAnn’s Tea Room, located in an attached greenhouse in the back of the store. Oversized wreathes hang over the open room, which is tastefully decorated for the season. MaryAnn’s is open daily for dining in and, of course, “high tea.”

5.

Created by designer Mark Roberts, ornaments like this are collector’s items that are all made by hand. From afar, the ornament adds a shiny “pop” to the tree that catches your eye. Up close, the attention to detail in the ornaments shows a more personal touch.

This hand-made top hat, which takes three days to make, is an over-the-top finishing touch to your holiday tree. Designer Michael Shreves enjoys making unique pieces like this that have a way of standing out. All of the Christmas tree toppers at Enchanting Embellishments are made by hand, with a variety of styles, from dramatic to subtle and classic, timeless to modern and bold. V

“Can you stop? This is an important interview! It means a lot to me,” Lisa Vanderpump, star of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and its spinoff series Vanderpump Rules, has just requested her hair stylist to pause for a moment while she has this interview. On this season of Vanderpump Rules we are introduced to Vanderpump’s latest addition to her empire: Pump, an LGBT restaurant and lounge. “I’m going back to my roots,” she explains. Among many other establishments, Vanderpump is the creator of a number of London based gay nightclubs, including the Shadow Lounge, The Village and Freedom. Needless to say, she had a very clear vision on what PUMP should be from the start. “With PUMP I very much wanted a romantic feel, very neutral with taupe colors and the olive trees,

but then I wanted to the kind of beautiful eye candy with the young men in the pink shirts. I love to see the play on the word Vanderpump with the word ‘PUMP’ on the back of the shirt.”

That romantic environment has already drawn the attention of one gay couple, who had their wedding ceremony at PUMP, with Vanderpump herself officiating: “I met this couple and they just seemed perfect,” she explains.

As she goes on, it becomes clear that the seriousness of the ceremony wasn’t lost on the reality star. She is no stranger to being in high pressure situations from her experience with the heated Housewives arguments, Dancing With The Stars performances, and talk show appearances. “I have to say, this was pressure,” Vanderpump recalls. “It wasn’t just about me screwing up and looking like a complete turkey. It was their wedding day, so I did feel the pressure in terms not wanting them to walk away and say, ‘Well that was completely bloody useless’.”

Since she is known for aiming for perfection, she took matters into her own hands.

“I sat them down and we did a couple hours of going through it,” Vanderpump says. “It made me so nervous, but as we rolled through on it Saturday it was a beautiful day. We even had a bit of a laugh through the vows. There was serious stuff, but there were definitely a few lighthearted moments which they embraced.”

in calling out those celebrities who are just in it for the photoopps and publicity.

This nervousness was no doubt magnified by the fact that — as often the situation in Vanderpump’s life — the cameras were rolling.

“On a serious note, because I always joke, let’s not forget 36 million people have died and 35 million people are living with HIV and AIDs,” she explains. “It’s important that every step is a step in step in remembrance — remembering that ten percent of youth in America are LGBT and remembering that 1 in 4 kids get thrown out of their house when confronting their parents about their sexuality.”

“Oh gosh! I don’t remember who was filming me. I could be filming a porn and I wouldn’t even know!” she jokes.

Vanderpump herself is a mother of three children. “To think that one in four kids are thrown out in the street,” she says, pausing.

“Housewives!” an assistant shouts from the behind.

“You can’t change your child. That’s why it’s important to have me as heterosexual spokeswoman in the gay community. I love the gay community.”

*

Vanderpump is particularly excited about this season’s return to it’s glory days. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is currently airing it’s new season on Tuesdays at 9/8 Central on Bravo. “I think we’ve gone back to the first and second season. It’s got a great energy,” she says. Last season saw slumped ratings due, which she attributes to the tone of the show. “I thought last year was so negative,” she recalls. “I wanted to walk away from the show. I think everybody learned a lesson from that. This season, we bring back the bling factor and the funny factor. It’s exciting.” Before I can follow up she adds, “You’ve seen the teaser. I even end up with a slap.” Teaser is right. When pressed for further details, she remains tight-lipped.. “That would be me giving you the final pages of the book. It’s cheating you!” she explains. “You have to go through and watch how that plays out. It definitely changes the dynamic for me and I was not happy about it. It was right at the end of filming, thank goodness,” Speaking of dynamics and positivity our conversations shifts back to equality and the LGBT community. Vanderpump makes you immediately aware of how genuinely passionate the restaurateur and reality star is about the LGBT community. Although a lot of stars get away with pandering to the gay audience with vague comments on equality, Vanderpump has certainly done her homework and walks the walk. Literally.

Growing up in United Kingdom she attended drama school where she made her first gay friends at a young age. “I was well aware that a few of my dancer friends at the school were gay. They probably didn’t know it at the time,” she adds with a laugh. “My parents brought me up in an environment to see no color and to have no prejudice. I thank them for that. That really goes a long way in forming your opinions.” It’s a value that Vanderpump has passed on to her children. “I taught them, ‘You judge people. Yes, I encourage you to judge them, but judge them who they are, and on their heart and their actions,” she explains. “Not by their color or sexuality because if you do you will leave out a lot of amazing people in your life. You’ll be the loser.” She goes on to explain, “I hate the word ‘tolerance,’ I don’t understand why we use that word. I think we should be embracing, not tolerating. That’s how I was brought up, that’s how I brought my kids up and that’s the world I want to live in.” “That’s my job as an advocate. That’s my job as a heterosexual woman. The gay community can stand up and scream from the rooftops but they’re preaching to the converted. I’m a heterosexual woman that says, ‘Listen up! Parents, you are not going to change your children. You love your children unequivocally. That’s my message, and yes, I’m happy to stand up for you.’” V

I didn’t ask for names. “Unlike some people,” she reiterates, “who come in and make an appearance and then disappear. I walked — it is a long walk. It does take hours.” Throwing shade has made Lisa one of the most popular stars of the entire Real Housewives franchise, but she has point

Last year on Christmas Day, Vanderpump tweeted that one of her swans went missing.

Did he ever return?

“He didn’t. I tweeted [about it] and the Hotel Bel Air tweeted me back. So I said ‘I wonder if he’s gone off to the Hotel Bel Air?’ and TMZ picked it up. I think maybe he was nervous because he saw us bringing a turkey to the oven.”

Are you a big Christmas decorator? “I’m crazy! I put out loads of stuff — as much as I can. I’m passionate about it. In fact, I would love to design my own Christmas decorations.”

When is too soon to start decorating?

“I was just having this conversation with my husband. I used to start decorating on December 8th because my son’s birthday was on the 7th. I never wanted him to feel like his birthday faded into Christmas. Now that he’s not home I think I’m going to get going really early.”

How many trees do you put up? “Three, in all different colors. One is 12 foot in the lounge.”

Favorite gift from your husband, Todd? “I love jewelry. He’s bought me puppies over the years, but I’ve got seven dogs so I can’t have another puppy.”

Tips for Great Holiday Gifts? “I like personal things. I’ll get a really beautiful faux throw [personalized] and I put a bottle of Vanderpump vodka in it and I’ll say ‘Snuggle Up, Keep Warm, and Get Drunk this Christmas.’ I like things that make people think you’ve gone through some effort. There are lots of places you can get things personalized and I like that.”

Amazon Prime’s original series Transparent’s

T

he hit series Transparent joined Amazon Prime with a bang this fall season and reeled in a large audience due to its success. Starring Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender male finally coming out to his family as being a woman, he is joined by actors Amy Landecker, Judith Light and Gaby Hoffmann in creating a dynamic cast both on and off camera.

With having a strong cameo presence in the series, many influential actors join the cast throughout its 11 episodes. A St. Louis native, Van Barnes, who plays a fun transgender Internet working girl, filled one of those featured roles. She opens up about herself, her role, working with the cast and the creator, as well as what she hopes to see in future popular televisions portrayal of LGBTQ roles. Barnes’ character in the series landed her debut in episode six. On film she is sought out by curious Jay Duplass, who is researching transgender information on the Internet after discovering his father is a woman. She further explains her role and how it relates to her in her actual life. “The gender aspect of my character in Transparent is unapologetic, similar to me in real life,” Barnes says. “I was

able to promote that the vagina does not make the woman.” She also had the wonderful opportunity to work at Paramount Studios both on and off of the screen. She also acted as assistant to the Set Decorator and shares nothing but positive words to express her time there. “The whole experience was phenomenal - For an Ozark country girl to go play in the big Hollywood world, it was exhilarating and exhausting at the same time,” she explains. Being on set with creative people who actively represent the LGBTQ community as a whole makes it a welcoming place for any actor. With her time spent, Barnes established friendships with numerous creative people. “I got to build great relationships with so many people on different levels, and realized that we are all in the process of creating television together as a team, and that’s a gift,” Barnes says. But it wasn’t only being able to work with creative individuals in such a monumental studio; it was also the context of the

38

December 2014

show in itself that made this a great experience. As a series, Transparent is dynamic, diverse and raw which also led her to a comfortable time on set. “Being a part of a series that highlights the LGBTQ community was special, not only in the aspect that I was celebrated for my diversity, but that I was also in a sort of protected bubble where I was not afraid of being discriminated against,” Barnes continues. Being able to feel comfortable in a creative environment is absolutely necessary. It also helped her to be able to connect to the role she was playing on a personal level and make it relatable. “My cameo as ‘Houston T Girl’ in Transparent was liberating!” Barnes explains. “Thankfully, I’ve gotten to a point where I can live authentically, and don’t feel the need to be stealth or undetectable.” She personally relates to the show as well as other transgender individuals who have had their own struggles with being comfortable both inside and out. Her success in the industry as well as personally has made her more than proud of herself - as she should be.

“Many transgender brothers and sisters have to overcome extreme adversity on many levels in order to live authentically, so I see just succeeding in life as a badge or honor,” she says. Barnes believes that her favorite aspects of Transparent as a series are shared by many of the viewers who contributed to its success. She explains the family starring in the series and how their downfalls are the shows best qualities. “All the characters of the Pfefferman family exhibit elements that might challenge acceptance within a typical dysfunctional family,” Barnes says. Making this series more real and relatable to many families who aren’t the “Leave it to Beaver” types is perfect. It’s not as much about the actions on the show, but more the reactions of its characters. She quotes the shows creator, Jill Soloway, as once saying, “The show asks the age old question, what if? Will you still love me?” “We are to challenge the notion that the love of a family should

80% of viewers watch 2+ episodes in the same day be unconditional, this show is not solely about a transgender character – In the large scope of it, it’s about a family becoming transparent to one another,” Barnes explains. In the eyes of the audience, she finds this aspect of unconditional love and disruption to be what she believes viewers can appreciate. Creator Soloway has expressed how she has longed to disrupt the social norms of the pretty skinny girls to be the only sexual characters in media. This show has clearly displayed that it’s not our “typical sexy.” Barnes elaborates on Soloway’s view, saying “Jill is a celebrated feminist, and great with challenging the model figure/ body aesthetic, she’s tends to celebrate a more realistic, down-to-earth sexy.” This refreshing twist in events leaves the audience constantly craving more and wondering what could ever happen next. “[Soloway] reflects more of a real mirror image of our society as opposed to the perfected generations of movie and television that has been shoved at us,” Barnes continues. Transparent is surely just the beginning in a trend of LGBTQ characters being displayed on more dynamic less stereotypical terms. “This show is a rung on the ladder that we as a community are climbing together, there will be other shows after Transparent, which will take it a step further, until finally we will reach the top,” Barnes says. The top, in Barnes eyes, is seeing transgender individuals being able to act in any role on mainstream popular television.

“When we are able to move on from storylines which focus on pointing out our diversity, at that point all people will be the norm,” she continues. “Where the new trend for roles will not be sexuality and gender focused.” With the future roles being able to move away from transgender characters portrayed stereotypically, it will be a great step forward. However, the way things are being displayed now aren’t necessarily bad by any means. “For now, these shows are important, because they help to break down barriers by educating some and liberating others,” Barnes says. Having a lovely household with the men of her life, living in the Midwest, Barnes tends to watch “outdoor TV” and let the guys of the house guide the remote. “I have grown to enjoy what we watch as a family,” she says. “I probably am not a good judge on mainstream television since we mainly watch man-TV.” She explains her somewhat “limited” view on the present attempts of producers tackling LGBTQ roles but explains what television is truly missing. “It seems more and more shows are including LGBTQ characters and I hear of more Trans characters,” she explains. “But we have yet to see authentic transgender people playing lead trans parts.” Controversy has been known to be brought up on the topic that transgender activists are angered at Hollywood for their played out and stereotypical portrayal of trans roles. “Hopefully, we will see positive transgender roles, that aren’t stereotypical and so focused on the negative elements

of trans life, because I believe we all want diverse superhero type characters to inspire us,” Barnes says. What inspires an audience varies, and this show has plenty to offer to touch the lives of any struggle. Barnes opened up about her dreams for her acting career and how she wishes to move away from the traditional storyline. “My dream role would be to play a mother, with heterosexual children, whom were not effected by my being trans,” she shares. “Even potentially not being stipulated as a trans-character at all, that would be a real accomplishment.” She left season one with great hopes for the second season. She has not yet been confirmed on any role for season two but still remains positive. “They are still in the writing phase, and I would be considered as a staff member when the show crews up, which is still a few months away,” she explains. “I hope I will be included, but nothing is stone yet.” Barnes explains how more shows like Transparent can be seen through getting involved with politics, reaching out to producers and being forward in a tasteful manner. “People whom are bold enough to contact producers sometimes get jobs,” she concludes. “Especially if you are smart about it, not stalker-like. You never know when your voice will actually be heard.” According to Amazon, success rates this past season for Transparent showed 80% of viewers watch two or more episodes in the same day, With that said, Transparent season one is currently featured on Amazon Prime and will return with a second season in 2015. Midnight Annie’s Final Performance: A Last Farewell to Clementines Written by

Chris Andoe Darin Slyman

40

December 2014

Normally the writing’s on the wall long before a bar closes, but everyone in St. Louis was blindsided by the closing of Clementines, which was the city’s oldest gay bar in operation and among the oldest in the nation. It opened as a leather bar in 1978, and then was sold to Gary Reed and his late partner Jim Briscoe in 1985. While the original owner didn’t allow drag queens, Gary and Jim did, and had their friend Midnight Annie headline the first show. Unbeknownst to her, they billed it as “Midnight Annie’s Final Performance” to make it more of a draw. Gary recalled Midnight Annie’s exasperation as she kept admonishing, “Would you quit telling people this is my final performance?” She carried on there for many more years, and after she passed away Gary and Jim entombed her in the wall. News of the bar’s closure broke on a Wednesday, with the final day to be the following Monday. Embedded there for the final days, I worked to capture the stories of the people who loved the place. “I worked here for twenty years. It’s part of my life. It’s where I met my husband of sixteen years. I’ve never been showed anything but kindness here. Customers were always kind. It’s like Cheers, when I’m down and out there’s always someone here to lift me up. That’s the one thing that scares me to death: Where am I going to meet my friends? Where will us fading flowers go? I’m just thankful. It’s like losing a friend, but when you look back you have to be thankful.” – Josie, 52 “See the guy with the hot pink goblet? That’s Miss Davey. He’s been coming here every single day for years and they keep that goblet just for him. One day I asked Jan ‘How do I get my own goblet?’ She said ‘Well, you’ve gotta come here every day!’ I’ve asked Miss Davey to talk to you, but he’s too upset and is afraid of what he might say. Give him a little time.” – Johnny LaMar “This is Howard, he was here for the grand opening!” said Dennis, while grabbing Howard Campbell, 79, upon entering the bar. “Go get a drink and we can talk when you get back,” I said. “You’re giving him too much time, he might die in the next five minutes! He’s about a hundred and forty!” Dennis joked. Several exchanged stories about Midnight Annie, including a silver fox named Tyler.

“Oh, I remember Midnight Annie. She was a trust fund baby, and when she’d get an installment, she’d blow it in no time. Once she sauntered into a Cadillac dealership and bought TWO Cadillacs. One for her and one for her trick! That’s just how she was. God, I still remember her sitting at that bar, drunk as hell, with her lipstick going up her face and her wig on crooked. She had this trademark sound she’d make, and when she’d do it everyone around the bar would mimic it.- like a bird call.” While the regulars bonded and commiserated Wednesday through Saturday, Sunday was the day the community at large came out to say goodbye. It felt like Mardi Gras as hundreds poured into the street, partially blocking the intersection of Allen & Menard. When Monday night rolled around, I almost didn’t go. I’d spent all of my time there since Wednesday, and thought it would be too sad. Around 8 p.m., however, I decided I would always regret not going. I walked in, and on the glowing dry erase marquee near the pool table I wrote, “Going down with the ship.” The bar was crowded but not overly so, with mostly regulars who’d been going there for ages. The spirits were higher than expected, and the camaraderie was simply incredible as old friends hugged, laughed and made toasts. Miss Davey, the daily regular who had his own hot pink goblet and had been too upset to be interviewed, came up and gave me a hug. “I’m really sad, but I’m going to be okay” he said, smiling. I was less than a foot from Gary when, in the final hours, he took the microphone, and the quiet, introverted man who’d hardly said anything over years gave a rousing farewell speech. The whole place stopped to listen and applaud. He spoke about how much the times had changed since the bar opened in 1978, and changed for the better. He spoke of the historic old brick building which was erected in the 1860’s. He said all drinks were on the house until the last bottle was dry, and then he then brought up Midnight Annie. “I always say my only child was a seventy-five-year-old drag queen” he began, and then announced, “And she’s leaving with me. Ladies and Gentleman, next to Jan is Midnight Annie!” and I’ll be damned if he didn’t have Midnight Annie’s dusty urn, complete with the yellowed and water stained label, sitting on the bar with a cocktail! The crowd went mad with uproarious cheers and applause. On that final evening there were people in attendance who’d come to see Midnight Annie’s final performance back in 1985. After a nearly thirty year wait she and Gary Reed finally delivered with a closing number this city will never forget. V

Th e r e’ s n o t h i n g l ike m aking u p for lost t im e , a n d w h e n Hollywood execu tive J osh S a b a rra f i n ally lost his vir ginity at 3 1, h e h it the grou nd r u nning. In his candid, poignant and scandalous new memoir, Sabarra takes readers along for a Hollywood thrill-ride through his journey from shamed to shameless. Traumatized in early childhood by teachers, camp counselors and peers who chastised him for being different, Sabarra suppressed his sexuality, instead focusing on academic and professional success. Seeing early on how the world reviled him for who he was, he went to desperate lengths to ensure his family never knew his secret. Sabarra holds nothing back when detailing his struggle with self-esteem issues, OCD, an eating disorder and a plastic surgery addiction that left part of his lip numb. When he came out at 31, he forever put shamerelated secrets in his past. After decades of anxiety fearing his family would reject him, Sabarra now calls his Jewish mother with every sordid detail of his adventurous sex life, which has included hustlers, porn stars, the rich and famous, and a toe-sucking fetishist. He even takes his parents along when shopping for porn. The gay best friend to Rikki Lake and other female celebrities, Sabarra discovers how empty and disposable such friendships usually are and, now 40 years old, finally finds himself. He opened up to discuss his journey, the reaction he’s received and what’s next. While reliving the most raw and traumatic parts of your childhood for this book, were there times it got to be too emotionally draining? If so, how did you deal with that? Much of the writing process was exhausting emotionally, more so than I expected. Revisiting the darker years — including the suicide of a close friend and my time in grade school — was particularly difficult. In the end, though, it was cathartic to put a narrative to my experiences. It helped me to understand myself and my worldview, and now I feel ready to move into “Act 2” of my life with a healthier, more authentic sensibility. Some names were changed, but Ricki Lake’s was not. What’s the back-story? And how did she respond to your account of events? Some of my friendships were very public, so I stayed true and honest about those relationships. I actually look

favorably on my friendship with Ricki because, had she not come into my life, I don’t know how long it would have taken me to figure out my personal boundaries. What are some of the notable reactions from others mentioned or alluded to? The reaction to my book has been very positive. People seem to have appreciated the honesty and candor, even when they found themselves in the pages. It has been really satisfying in that way; everything is out in the open. Regarding social media, you discussed how glamorous your friends found your photos, when in reality the events were often lonely and uncomfortable. Having been in Hollywood before the rise of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, would you say the events used to be more enjoyable? I think social media is a fantastic tool that has given many wonderful people a louder voice — and it has certainly served the Hollywood marketing machine well. That said, I believe everyone enjoyed the times when they didn’t have to worry about their picture being snapped by a camera phone and broadcast to people across the world. Can you see yourself leaving Los Angeles in the next decade, and if so, what cities would be on your short list? I love Los Angeles, but I could definitely see myself living in New York City and perhaps retire to New England. I love Massachusetts and Maine!

Sexually, you’ve really made up for lost time and have had some mind-blowing rendezvous. Do you think you could be satisfied settling into a predictable routine with your next man, or do you expect to keep up the pace? My dream is to find a healthy, monogamous relationship! Remember, I had a delayed adolescence — so the sexual exploration was to be expected, albeit a little late. I should have tried it all at 20! I was amused by your devastating critique of Burlesque. Do you think Alan Cumming would’ve kicked you out of bed for saying such things?

One of the best reasons to stay in bed is to watch campy movies like Burlesque. It certainly won’t be screening at the American Film Institute anytime soon. V thevitalVOICE.com
