Mo. Rep. Zachary Wyatt Comes Out
Missouri Republican Representative Zachary Wyatt (R-02-Kirksville) publicly came out to his colleagues during a press conference, May 2 asking for the withdrawal House Bill 2051 or the “Don’t Say Gay Bill”. The announcement makes the Representative the only out gay, Republican holding state office currently serving in the United States - and made while Representative Wyatt offered an amendment containing enumerated categories to an anti-bullying bill up for debate.
Interview with Author BA Buttz
Born to be Damned: The Tapestry of a Gay Man by Decatur, Illinois native B.A. Buttz is a nostalgic trip into one man’s past to examine the torment and humiliation he felt coming to terms with his homosexuality. Religion, environment and genetics all conspired to ensure he fulfilled his destiny as a gay man. The book is an emotional but ultimately empowering read. Vital VOICE recently chatted with the author who will be at the 5th Annual Metro East Pride Festival, June 16, 2012 in Belleville, Illinois. You can also purchase a copy through Amazon.com.
EEOC’s Transgender Breakthrough
In a landmark opinion, April 20 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) declared that an employer who discriminates against an employee or applicant on the basis of the person’s gender identity is violating the prohibition on sex discrimination contained in Title VII of the Civil rights Act of 1964. The opinion came in a decision delivered today (April 23) to lawyers representing Mia Macy, a transgender woman who claims she was denied employment with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after the agency learned of her transition.
Author! Author! Zach Walls
Author Zach Walls was at Left Bank Books for a talk, Q&A and book signing, May 3. Ten percent of book sales benefitted The LGBT Center of St. Louis. Walls earned instant fame after testifying before the Iowa State House in support of his two mothers. Since that night, the video has received over 2 million views on YouTube and became the #1 most-watched political video on the site for 2011. Wahls’ journey to that moment and beyond are detailed in his new book My Two Moms - Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family. In it, Wahls details the values his moms taught him from a normal upbringing, and the value of a family - any family in life.

pril 20, 1980 was a typically cold and wet St. Louis Sunday. It was also the birth of what would become a Gateway City tradition, St. Louis PrideFest. Organized by the Magnolia Committee, the first march was billed as “Gays and Lesbians Walk for Charity” and was used to raise funds which were donated to non-gay charities.
Grove Park in 1998 where both the parade and festival have enjoyed unprecedented growth.
There were many gay and lesbian Pride signs that morning (the “B” and “T” had yet to become a part of our communal consciousness.) About 300 people actually participated in that first walk – many carrying balloons, which were released at the Brooking’s stairs at Washington University.
“Size wise the city says they consider us the second largest parade only to Mardi Gras due to the type of parade they are,” Says Ellen Vanscoy, who has held the position of Pride Parade Director since 2007. “As far as the mixture and type of entries we have – we’re bigger. We have dignitaries, hundreds strong walking groups, build out floats, horses. We have kind of the whole spectrum that some of the other parades in the area do not have. We’re actually bigger in terms of the number of participants in the parade.”
The route that year stepped off at the fountain in Maryland Plaza in the Central West End, then moved east on Maryland, south on Euclid, then west on Lindell to the W.U. Campus. The following year St. Louis held the second Gay and Lesbian Pride March and Celebration, organized by a unified Pride Committee, later named Pride St. Louis. In 1984, the march was officially dubbed a “parade” and for the next 14 years would queue in Forest Park and travel into the CWE, down Euclid, and back for festival. Those early parades were sparse and would oftentimes have more people marching than actually watching from the sidewalks. Decorated cars and small trucks with sound systems were the floats of the day – but these humble beginnings were profound statements of a community voicing it’s pride in celebration and, at times, in political protest. Whether the battle cries of ACT UP and Queer Nation, the harmonies of the Gateway Men’s Chorus and Metropolitan Community Church, or the ever moving presence of Growing American Youth and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays – these early parades proved the stepping stones to the dynamic event we enjoy today. Pride St. Louis moved its celebration to South Grand and Tower
Clarence Harmon was the first St. Louis Mayor to ride in the Pride parade. It was big moment. Since then, Mayor Francis Slay has been a steady presence along with sundry supportive politicians.
Last year’s Pride parade had 125 entries and some 2,500 people participating. For the past four years the city has required Pride to purchase bike rack barricades from Magnolia down to Utah due to swelling crowds. “Our community comes out en masse – but you also get people from the neighborhood that come out,” Vanscoy explains. “The neighborhood kids, the neighborhood families—but I find all over the city, wherever I am – if it comes up that I’m Parade Director, they say: “Oh – I go to that every year because it’s fabulous.” We’ve grown to the capacity that we are recognized and it is a destination event.” Last year Lumière Place Casino & Hotels and River City came on board as presenting sponsor for the Pride parade and are returning this year. Indeed, what was once decorated cars and trucks and walking contingents has given way to a cornucopia of impressive and colorful entries. “We do very basic decorations along the route because we want to put the focus back on the entries,” says Vanscoy.

“They’ve really stepped up with larger, built out floats and more elaborate walking entries. They’ve really embraced that. It’s your Pride – make it what you want.” Vanscoy is presently the longest serving Pride St. Louis Board member and early on realized the importance of both parade and festival working together. “I worked really hard to make the parade more inclusive with festival,” she states. “Prior to my coming on board, the parade was almost a separate entity. When I took over, I said I will only do this if we make it a combined effort and we are a unified front for the entire weekend – and we’ve worked really hard to do that. I think that’s why participation has exploded even more, because vendors know what’s going on.” Vanscoy calls Pride St. Louis her second family – which includes extended family members like Vital VOICE publisher Darin Slyman who has been the Pride Parade emcee for the past eight years. Tower Grove and Grand South Grand has proven an idyllic home to PrideFest and the annual Grand Parade. But as crowds continue to grow – edging closer to 100,000 each year – it begs the question if the mid-summer celebration is a victim of its own success. “It’s possible that the parade will one day out grow Grand,” she admits. “But we’re always using creative staging areas to see how we can better utilize space. Obviously the Tower Grove community welcomes us and wants us there and we want to stay there just because of the atmosphere.” Pride Parade applications are accepted up until the day before the event. Late fees may apply. For more information check out pridestl.org.

Shelby Lynne Written by Colin Murphy – Senior Writer/Executive Editor Photography by Lisa VanHecke Country legend Shelby Lynne graces the main stage at St. Louis PrideFest on Saturday, June 23 at 6:00p.m. The Grammy award winner is touring the country with her newest offering, Revelation Road for which she wrote all of the songs, played all the instruments and produced all 12 tracks. The iconic entertainer is honored to play her first ever Pride Festival right here in The Gateway City. “I have been touring this album solo, acoustic,” says Lynne. “So I am excited about having an intimate evening with everyone.” Lynne was raised in rural Alabama by musical parents who stressed individuality and the importance of standing apart from others. A terrible student, but avid reader, she loved the written lyric and a beautiful melody. Around the house she was surrounded by country music from the past, Hank Williams, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings, as well as old 45’s that belonged to her parents stacked high with most all Everly Brothers, Beatles, Elvis.
She is a firm believer in the power of music to change hearts and minds. “No matter who we are, what we do, music knows no boundaries and brings us closer together,” she explains. “When expressing ourselves through words or conversation might be difficult, music can carry us through.” Never one to go with the crowd, Shelby continues to stand apart from the mainstream music world. She made her acting debut in 2005, playing Johnny Cash’s mother in Walk the Line and recently founded her own label, Everso Records. “I want to be remembered for my body of work,” offers Lynne. “Artists need to feel free to grow and change throughout their careers. When an artist is put in a box and defined by one thing, they have no growing room. Art is ever changing.”
Lynne’s Tears, Lies, And Alibis was released in April 2010 and was soon followed by her first –ever holiday collection, Merry Christmas, released that fall. Lynne enjoys a large and loyal gay following and has herself been the subject of gay rumors over the years. It is a fact she will neither confirm nor deny: “I’ve done everything on every corner of the universe,” Lynne told the New York Times, “but I’m not going to make an announcement about it.” “The power in positively showing the world who you are is immeasurable,” says Lynne when asked what Pride means to her. “We are creatures made from GOD, his pride and joy. That, in life is all we need to ever know from inside our hearts.” For more info check out shelbylynne.com
Her father was a weekend guitar player in bands and bars and taught her a three-chord progression in E, and from there the hunger for more was so intense she learned the rest on her own. By high school graduation, her mind was made up and a trip to Nashville was inevitable. While briefly married to her high school sweetheart and with dreams of country music success in mind, they packed and moved to Music City where she met veteran songwriter Bob Tubert who helped her secure a record deal with CBS records. Legendary producer Billy Sherrill came out of semi retirement to produce her first record. After five Albums in Nashville, Lynne was hungry for a change from the Nashville system. She recorded I am Shelby Lynne on the Northern California coast in 1998 and was awarded Best New Artist at the 2000 Grammy Awards – after nearly 13 years in the business. theVitalVOICE.com | 19
Frenchie Davis Written by Matt Jamieson Photography by frenchiedavis.org
Frenchie Davis was born in Los Angeles, California and studied musical theatre at Washington D.C.’s Howard University. She has appeared in European productions of Little Shop of Horrors and Jesus Christ Superstar. Other stand out shows include Sing, Mahalia, Sing and the Clinton satire musical, Monica. She recently starred as the “Fairy Godmother” in Cinderella at the Berkeley Playhouse, receiving rave reviews. Frenchie just went before the camera’s after being cast in a new comedy film called, Dumbbells which also stars Carl Reiner and Tom Arnold. When the notoriously crabby American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, predicts someone could win the competition, then you know you’ve found a special talent. That’s just what the music empire giant had to say about Frenchie Davis during her time on AI. Broadway baby, dance diva and reality TV favorite, Frenchie Davis’s star is shining brighter than ever. Television once again came calling for Frenchie as she was chosen to compete on the NBC hit television show The Voice. Beating out scores of singers for a coveted spot, Frenchie wowed audiences with her take on “I Kissed A Girl and I Like It” as Christina Aguilera turned her chair and cemented Frenchie’s place on “Team Cristina” and TV history. Show stopping performances of “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”, “Like A Prayer” and “When Love Takes Over” turned Frenchie into an audience and judges favorite. Music superstar Blake Shelton exclaimed “You’re the most powerful singer in this competition!” and Maroon Five front man, Adam Levine summed it up with “There’s just something so beautiful about you!” Audiences responded by making Frenchie a top finalist on 20 | June, 2012
The Voice, a trending topic on Twitter and a top ten selling artist on Itunes. Christina Aguilera summed it up by telling Frenchie, “You always make me proud”. Frenchie’s chart topping musical history also includes several Billboard Dance Chart toppers including “Give Me Tonight” and DJ/re-mixer Tony Moran’s “You Are”. Frenchie is in the process of selecting material for her new album, with plans to include a mix of Broadway, classic hits, dance and some original material. After a successful 4 year run in Broadway’s Rent, Frenchie continued on with national tours of Dreamgirls and 30th Anniversary of Ain’t Misbeavin, costarring with her Idol alum, Ruben Studdard. The latter garnered a Grammy nomination for the cast album. In late June 2012, Frenchie will be releasing the video Love’s Got A Hold On Me, which is the debut single from Frenchie’s upcoming self titled CD “Frenchie” which will be released summer 2012. Frenchie is excited to be celebrating PrideFest with the wonderful people of St. Louis! “Pride is a time of celebration because it acts as a reminder to the LGBT community that it’s ok to be themselves and it’s ok to be out and proud,” she said. With a bright future ahead, Frenchie keeps herself grounded and grateful, saying “I like the fact that I’ve been able to do what I love and still enjoy my life. I can tell you, I have crossed paths and met so many people who are way richer than I am, way more famous, but they don’t enjoy their lives more than I do.” For more check out frenchiedavis.org

Kristine W. Written by Matt Jamieson Photography by Project Publicity Kristine has an astonishing career with a number of incomparable feats as an international dance music icon with such hits like “The Power of Music,” “The Wonder of It All” and “Feel What You Want.” “It’s crazy, it’s a lot of work, but I love it,” she says. “It’s all about the performances and the people. As long as they like the music, I’m happy.” And it appears they have. Kristine has 16 #1 tracks on the Billboard Dance/Club Play songs chart and currently holds the world’s record for Most Consecutive #1 Billboard Club Hits. She recently tied Mariah Carey for third-most chart toppers on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart; only Madonna and Janet have scored more at the pole position. In December 2009, Billboard published both their year and decade end charts announcing Kristine in the third place position on the decade’s Best of 2000s Dance Club Play Artists list, trailing only Madonna and Beyonce. She has performed more shows at the Las Vegas Hilton than any other performer in its history— including the King, Elvis Presley, himself. Music has always been a constant in Kristine’s life.
22 | June, 2012
Growing up in TriCities, Washington, her grandmother — a pianist, classical violinist and guitarist—exposed her to singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae. Kristine’s mother raised a family of five on her own by singing jazz and standards in local juke joints. At age nine, Kristine was singing with her mother. Soon, she was competing in local beauty pageants and some years later, it was her rendition of “Summertime” that won her the talent competition at the Miss America Pageant. Despite her fame as a dance artist, jazz has been one of Kristine’s greatest passions since early childhood. In 2010 she released her first jazz album, Straight Up with a Twist, featuring jazz versions of some of her greatest hits. “One of the reasons Straight Up with a Twist took four years to complete was because I insisted on bringing the best musicians to the project and scheduling time with these busy artists was complicated,” says Kristine. “This was my first foray into recording a jazz album. I figured if I was going to do it, I was going to do it right.” The album features musicians who have toured with Carlos Santana, Marc Anthony, Paulino Rubio, Diana Ross, and Paul McCartney.
“My new jazz projects are exciting because this style of music allows me to be heard during the chilled moments in life,” says Kristine. “Music is supposed to take people on a journey, and that’s exactly what I’m creating on Straight Up with a Twist. This was a fun project to work on, and my favorite moments were when I was with my collaborators, throwing everything on the table, working on new arrangements and figuring out how to make that journey amazing for my fans. My audience has been so supportive of my music. I want to be in the mix for them anyway I can. I am blessed to be living my dream.” Kristine has a lot on her plate for 2012. She is releasing a new album and is excited to be returning to St. Louis for PrideFest, especially since she has had positive experiences in the Gateway to the West before. “I’ve always had a lot of fun in St. Louis,” she recalls. “Every time I come back it’s like a family reunion, everyone is just so great.” Kristine wants to see all her fans out in Tower Grove Park for PrideFest, especially for her performance on June 24! Deborah Cox Written by Corey Stulce – Vital VOICE West & Colin Murphy – Senior Writer/Executive Editor Photography by Spectrum Talent Agency
Deborah Cox has provided the soundtrack to many a St. Louis gay summer. The diva’s platinum selling debut album Deborah Cox was released in 1995 and garnered her first JUNO award for Best R&B Soul Recording. A multi-platinum selling and a multi-talented entertainer, Cox has earned three Juno Awards, conquered the R&B and pop charts, including six top-20 Billboard R&B singles, an impressive ten #1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart and the lead role in Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway musical, Aida. Deborah will be returning to Broadway in 2012 where she will portray the legendary Josephine Baker in Josephine.
St. Louis can be hot in June. Any thoughts on your stage attire? (I heard from a friend that you wore some killer ‘booty shorts’ for Kansas City’s Pride).
Hahaha!! I love the freedom of being able to dress however I feel!! I haven’t thought about it yet....I do know ...that it will probably be something glamorous...I’m really feeling Glamour these days!!!
Can you guesstimate how many times drag queens have done your songs onstage? Hmmm... By now...probably in the millions!!! I also think a drag performance is the highest form of flattery.
When did you realize you had a strong gay fanbase? What do they mean to you?
I realized I had a huge gay fan base when I did Pride weekend in NY back in 1997 and thousands packed the club from the night before right into Sunday morning. Once my schedule became completely booked in May and June, I knew that it was imperative to not only service the R&B shows, but I made an effort to accommodate my gay fans by doing small clubs, cruises to stay connected. It was taboo back in the day to do gay clubs. But I always felt very closely connected to my gay audience. I began
to do shows and hear stories about how “Absolutely Not” and “Things Just Aint The Same” changed this person and “Play Your Part” and “Nobody” changed this person and so on and so on....I know God gave me a gift and that I am supposed to share it.
What’s your preference today: dance version of “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”or the original? That is a hard question to answer. I enjoy the mere fact that that song has two very distinct versions.
the exchange of working with other actors. There is nothing like taking a ride and not knowing where you’re going to end up, but somehow you end up where you are supposed to be!
When might us fans get a chance to hear a new dance album?
Still in the works!! The state of the music business has made it challenging for labels and artists to put out records. For more info check out deborahcox.com
The club version gets me amped and charged to holla! And then the ballad version takes me to back to when I first listened to gospel music. The roots of that song are gospel so I feel like I am singing something strongly rooted to a message.
When are rehearsals beginning for Jeckyl and Hyde? What are you most excited about with this revival? I am really excited about this role. I start in August and then the tour starts in October in San Diego and tours til April then lands on Broadway April 2013!!!!
I’m most excited about singing the incredible songs. The story is one that is so universal, dealing with the good and bad inside yourself. I love to portray vulnerability because that’s at the core of who we are as human beings. I think often times as a celebrity we are looked at as always having it together but we have our issues too.
Are there chances of a dance mix of any songs from that show? Absolutely....but you’ll have to wait and see...
What are some of your favorite things about performing on the B’way stage?
I adore the orchestra every night. I love theVitalVOICE.com | 25

June 23-24, 2012 PrideFest 2012 Tower Grove Park St. Louis, MO Dear PrideFest Attendees: Welcome to the 33rd anniversary of St. Louis LGBT PrideFest. What started as a small gathering has grown into one of the largest festivals in the Midwest region, as people from all facets of the community come together to celebrate Pride weekend. The mission of Pride St. Louis is to foster an understanding and tolerance of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community by raising awareness through educational programs and events with the ultimate goal of achieving unity and harmony. I commend those who have lobbied and advocated for equal rights despite gender, religion, race, or sexual orientation. The theme of PrideFest St. Louis 2012 is “Be You. We wish you a most wonderful celebration this weekend here in the City of St. Louis. Sincerely
Francis G. Slay Mayor, City of St. Louis

Dear PrideFest PATRONS, We are honored and pleased to officially welcome you to St. Louis’ 33rd annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pride Festival. For over three decades, a myriad of volunteers have joined in our efforts to produce this annual, two-day festival, celebrating the diversity and unity of our community. As this midsummer festival stretches into its fourth decade, we’d like to share some exciting announcements with you. We have chosen “Be You” as the theme for PrideFest 2012, highlighting the snowflake-like individuality and uniqueness that each and every one of us possess. We find strength in bringing our differences together and celebrate the opportunity to live, to laugh and to love in our own unique ways. You’ll notice some significant and notable changes reflected in this year’s Pride. Most stunningly, the layout of the festival has been overhauled in response to the growing number of both local and regional LGBT representatives and supporters who annually attend the festival. Moreover, this redesigned layout will allow patrons to spread out and enjoy the beauty of historic Tower Grove Park. It will allow us to add new elements, such as an Athletes Village, an expanded Children’s Area and a Teen Zone for the ever-increasing number of Growing American Youth visitors. We’ve also increased the number of food and beverage options, and in response to our community voices, we are proud to present a larger and even more robust entertainment lineup. Pride St. Louis is excited to welcome and thank our newest Presenting Level Sponsor, Metro Transit-St. Louis. We are very pleased by the opportunity to further promote PrideFest throughout the metropolitan area with this one-of-a-kind sponsorship agreement. Look for PrideFest advertisements on the interior and exterior of city and county buses and trains. This campaign further highlights the fact that the LGBT community and its allies have extended well beyond the limits of St. Louis City, and we strongly encourage you to support Metro by riding a bus or train to PrideFest 2012. For the second year in a row, Bud Light joins the list as a Presenting Sponsor, while Lumiere Place and River City Casino will serve as the Parade Sponsor and host hotel. We’ve built upon last year’s foundation with Bud Light and Lumiere Place Casino and Hotels to produce yet another record-setting festival. We are also very pleased to announce that familiar sponsors, including Absolut, Malibu Rum, MasterCard and Barnes Jewish Hospital have returned to join several new sponsors for Pride 2012. In an effort to further celebrate Pride weekend, Lumiere Place has booked award-winning comedienne, Margaret Cho, for two ticketed shows on Saturday night, June 23rd at 8 o’clock and 9:30 pm. Throughout her career, Cho has been honored by organizations such as GLAAD, the NGLTF and PFLAG for making
a significant difference in promoting equal rights for all— regardless of race, sexual orientation or gender identity. Cho was recently honored by LA Pride, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award that recognizes an individual whose lifetime body of work has left a lasting imprint on the LGBT community. We would also like to thank our Presenting Media Sponsor, Vital VOICE Magazine, for their promotional support and service to the community throughout the 2012 Pride calendar year. Darin Slyman, Colin Murphy and the entire Vital VOICE staff have spent legion hours and dollars reporting on and supporting the LGBT Community of Greater St. Louis. Without their efforts, this exquisite Pride Guide would not be possible to enjoy. Pride St. Louis works year-round and devotes countless hours to help produce a PrideFest that everyone will enjoy. Please take a moment to thank one of our dedicated volunteers this weekend. In closing, we invite each of you to celebrate responsibly and with respect. Please enjoy our merchant, sponsor, food and beverage booths and experience the diverse entertainment we’ve lined up. Be sure to show support for those who are supporting and assisting in the Pride movement. Remember, this is your Pride! Take ownership, get involved and make a difference. It is you who fuels the Pride movement, and you have the opportunity to share that energy with over 85,000 festival and parade attendees. Build upon the efforts of those who came before you! In accordance with the parade slogan for 2012, Be You— Remember, Celebrate, Live! In Service and with Pride, The Pride St. Louis Board

Welcome to PrideFest St. Louis 2012 Written by Pat Howard
Having the courage to Be You is something worth celebrating, especially in a society that spends so much time fighting instead of finding common ground, promoting conformity and rigid ideas of body image and gender roles instead of embracing inclusion and a diversity of perspectives.
burgeoning community, and as a reflection of this, the festival itself will be physically bigger than in years past, expanding its footprint in St. Louis’ beautiful Tower Grove Park. That gives everyone more room to spread out and enjoy the festival with new and old friends.
It’s remarkable that 33 years ago, a group of St. Louisans bravely embraced who they were and created a tradition that has carried on for decades. Having the courage to Be You is sometimes all it takes to inspire others to embrace individuality in their own lives.
Music lovers will be thrilled to hear that this year’s world class entertainment lineup on the Bud Light Stage is one of the best ever assembled for Pride St. Louis. The festival has more than doubled its lineup of national headlining acts. In addition to popular music, this year’s entertainment will also showcase aerialists, burlesque performers, acrobatic dancers and even a few big surprises.
Pride St. Louis hopes that you will find many different opportunities to Be You during this year’s festival. By coming together to celebrate the things we have in common, we find strength and acceptance in community. The Pride Board of Directors hopes this year’s diverse activities and entertainment will give everyone a chance to see themselves reflected. Pride St. Louis has worked tirelessly to broaden this year’s festival to showcase more of the community’s broad and diverse interests, talents and creativity. PrideFest is growing along with our
For the first time, don’t miss the chance to take a break in the beautiful and relaxing wine garden, sponsored by Barefoot Wines. Also new this year, Pride St. Louis welcomes the Monster Star Tent, featuring rising artists from STL Loud on Saturday and a live DJ dance party Sunday. Sports fans won’t want to miss the skilled athletes of Team St. Louis, who will be sharing their sporting talents throughout
the festival. They’ll be showing off our community’s agility and strength in events including tournament style rugby, a rock climbing wall, and much more. Don’t be shy about bringing the kids. To incorporate future generations into Pride Fest, this year the festival will feature a play area with activities and entertainment for young children, which their parents will surely appreciate. Plus, LGBT youth group Growing American Youth is hosting a pavilion for teens. Pride St. Louis would also like to welcome the St. Louis LGBT History Project who will be displaying an array of items celebrating St. Louis’ lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender past. Also, Sunday’s parade will be bigger and better than ever before, and a growing array of local vendors, organizations and community leaders will mingle with tens of thousands of guests from around town and throughout the country. Pride St. Louis is honored that you’ve chosen to join us. We hope it is a memorable and entertaining weekend. Just don’t forget to Be You.
Honor your commitment to each other.

Parade Grand Marshal Bill Donius
William Donius attended Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business, then spent a decade working in California before returning to St. Louis. Nearly 20 of Donius’ 30 years were engaged in the corporate world at Pulaski Bank as CEO. During his tenure the bank grew eight-fold in size, was ranked one of the top performing small banks in the country, voted Best Place to Work in St. Louis and received a Torch Award for excellence in ethics and customer service. Donius served on a number of national and local boards including America’s Community Bankers, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board (TIAC), the Human Rights Campaign, the St. Louis Art Museum, Barnes Jewish Hospital and Maryville University.
At age 50, Donius chose to depart from the corporate world in order to devote full-time energies to his passions for writing and advocating for human rights issues. A nearly four year research project resulted in, Thought Revolution: How to Unlock Your Inner Genius. Released in March, it’s made the New York Times, Wall Street Journal Bestseller lists, amongst others. It offers a proven, easy methodology for finding one’s own creativity by tapping into the right brain, literally, in order to pull out the information needed to make better decisions in life.

One particular issue that is close to her heart is seeing Marriage Equality become a reality throughout the United States. Edmond O’Neill - $4,000 Edmond (Eddie) O’Neil attended Orchard Farm High School. He graduated from there in 2008. He then took a semester off to find himself before enrolling at St. Charles Community College (SCC) for the Spring Semester of 2009. Eddie graduated this past May 2012 with an Associates of Arts. While there, he held many leadership positions in Student Organizations and took an active role in the college’s affairs. Among these he served as President of Straights and Gays for Equality, Secretary and Treasurer of Student Senate, Work Study for Student Activities, Student Representative of the Presidential Search Committee and was a member of the Diversity Taskforce for future planning. Next fall, Eddie will be attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) majoring in political science. His post-grad plan is to obtain a law degree. Michelle Adzido - $5,000 Michelle Adzido, a recent graduate from Francis Howell High School, exited her final year as president of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. Michelle is originally from Chicago, Illinois and has lived in St. Charles County for about 4 years. In her spare time, Michelle finds inspiration and attempts to express it through song and occasional guitar-playing. She is all for exotic-flavored teas, Kurt Vonnegut and belting Ben Folds when she cleans and cooks. Michelle believes the most important component in life is to strive to make an impact on others’the primary reason behind pursuing psychology at Loyola University Chicago. Observing struggle of all kinds inspires Michelle to want to bring about positive change that will not only fulfill the needs of her community, but herself, knowing she wholeheartedly did so. Michelle would be remiss to not mention those who have supported her and will on her journey to making a difference. June, 2012

St. Louis Pride Guide
The Jim Hoefer Award Presented to an organization that best exemplifies what it means to serve St. Louis’ LGBT Community. PROMO is Missouri’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality rights advocacy organization. We help to foster community awareness and grassroots support for equality issues in Missouri. PROMO works to identify equality supporters, educate them on the issues, give them the tools and the confidence to participate in the political process and get results. In the past year, PROMO has helped cities to pass basic inclusive protections for the LGBT community in employment, housing and public accommodations; these local municipalities include Olivette, Clayton, Richmond Heights, Jackson County and Columbia. We have also worked with University City, Olivette and Clayton to create Domestic Partner registries that afford minimal rights to same-sex and opposite-sex couples. Through the help of our incredible supporters, PROMO has managed to gain momentum that will help further the movement for equal rights in Missouri.

Scott attended the very first Pride Parade in 1980 along with his mother and grandmother (who belonged to P-FLAG) and has attended all but four of the Pride Celebrations in St. Louis. While away at school in California, he worked at a camera store in Monterey where Ansel Adams had been a regular customer. Returning to St. Louis in 1991, he began giving back to the LGBT community by sharing his time and photographic talent with many A.S.O.’s and non-profits, including Pride St. Louis where he has been the official photographer since 1997. Also that year, he bought and rehabbed his Studio on Russell Blvd. with fellow artist and painter Grace McCammond. Jonah started his drag career 12 years ago at Blake’s Bar. He learned how to be successful in drag by his drag queen mentors. After a few years of working at Blake’s and Korner’s, Jonah moved down to Novak’s Bar and Grill. At Novak’s, Jonah met some amazing drag kings that also helped him grow as a performer. Today, Jonah is the Drag King Coordinator at Novak’s. His friend and brother, Clitt Black (Ellen Vanscoy), dubbed Jonah as “The Godfather of Drag”. That title is one of the most prized gifts that he has ever received. The title of King of Pride is another title that Jonah holds the highest respect for. King of Pride is for the St Louis community and Jonah sees this title as an honor to hold.
2012 Queen of Pride
By day CJ is a professionally trained bartender and by night Trixie is the show director for St. Louis’ newest landmark – Hamburger Mary’s. Being Queen of Pride means the world to CJ – he is the last “Biscuit Sister” to capture the title and without their support and encouragement he might not be doing drag today. These sisters, along with many of the former Pride Royalty court members have made Trixie the entertainer she is today. Over the course of this next year CJ plans to really make an impact on the level of involvement this title has to offer and serve as an amazing ambassador to the Pride organization which he so strongly believes makes a difference in the St. Louis LGBT community. The Future of
Pride
42 | June, 2012
Written by Matt Jamieson Photography by Darin Slyman
S
t. Louis Pride is constantly changing. When it started in 1980, there were only marchers with signs and a few vehicles, and today the celebration has grown into one of the largest attractions citywide. So we wonder – what will Pride be like in, say – 50 years time? We went to six community leaders for their takes on this question. Despite the variety of answers – it’s clear that Pride is here to stay! It will continue to evolve bigger, better and the LGBT community’s future continues to look bright in these leaders’ eyes!
A.J. Bockelman
Michelle Smith
“Pride will always be a celebration. The community will have its ups and downs, but we’ll always celebrate. In 50 years, we’ll look back at over 90 years of Pride and celebrate the advancements our community has had. I think by then things like marriage and basic protections will be settled. ”
“My hope is that it won’t be required to provide a venue for community, education and celebration. Everyone will be part of the greater St Louis community. Pride will be recognized nationally as a remembrance of the struggles that so many have gone through, similar to the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. And if in 50 years we haven’t realized the vision set forth in the Declaration of Independence that “All men are created equal,” then it is my hope that Pride instills many more positive emotions than negative ones.”
Organization: PROMO
Organization: The Gender Foundation
Lynne Cooper Organization: Doorways
“I believe that, like the accomplishments in civil rights won by people of color and women, we will have gained the legal framework for equality, but, comparable to pervasive racism and misogyny that continue today, we will still face discrimination in subtle ways from narrow minded people. But it is my hope that just as young African Americans revere the freedom riders of the 1960’s, and young women honor their activist mothers and aunts from the 1970’s, gays coming of age in 2062 will fondly cherish AIDS caregivers, advocates like PROMO and organizers like SAGE who are sacrificing now so that they might enjoy a peaceful life of equality in the middle of the century!”
Leon Braxton Jr. Organization: The LGBT Center of St. Louis
“The date is June 26, 2062 and the Executive Director of The Equality Center of St. Louis, Leon A. Braxton, Jr. is about to give a press conference on the State of the Community. Mr. Braxton, at age 102, is the oldest and longest serving Executive Director of any Community Center. Mr. Braxton started his career as the Executive Director of The LGBT Center of St. Louis – but when Marriage Equality, Anti Bullying and ENDA all passed in Mis souri; the “Don’t Say Gay” bill died in committee and nationwide the LGBT Community was granted all of its 1,138 rights – he was appointed by the Mayor to run a Center that benefited all St. Louisians – regardless of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or age. Thus he founded The Equality Center of St. Louis, where everyone is treated equal.”
Cheryl Oliver
Organization: St. Louis Effort for AIDS “If we all practice tolerance, advocate for equality and embrace differences – perhaps in 50 years our society will have evolved beyond fear, hate and stigma. We will have achieved race and gender equality, same-sex loving couples will walk hand in hand down the street without ridicule or worry, and loving someone of the same gender is so enmeshed in society that it will just be about relationship issues, (not gay vs. straight). It’s what we do today, this year and throughout our lives that will determine whether Pride is just a footnote in history or an underground movement fighting for equality.”
Sherrill Wayland Organization: SAGE Metro St. Louis
“As SAGE Metro St. Louis works to increase the visibility of LGBT older adults across the St. Louis Region, our view of PRIDE in 2062 is to rival the parade entry of Growing American Youth! In 2062 SAGE, OLOC and PrimeTimers will have a parade entry of 400 LGBT older adults marching down Grand with the biggest and best senior living communities providing transportation to the parade for all their LGBT residents. Dieta and Darin will be leading the way!!”

Rev. Dr. Carol Trissell’s Legacy Written by Matt Jamieson Photography by MCCGSL
R
everend Dr. Carol Trissell is moving on. The Oklahoma-born pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis (MCCGSL) is moving on to become the interim pastor of the MCC of Topeka, Kansas. When Reverend Trissell first came to St. Louis in November 2003, her mission was to get the MCC their own space.
Make Shop ’n Save your Summer Grilling Headquarters www.shopnsave.com or visit on Facebook www.facebook.com/shopnsave
“They were looking for a pastor to come and help lead the church through a capital campaign in order to get their own property,” Trissell said. “I had experience doing capital campaigns and a building program and they really wanted their own property.” Previously, the MCCGSL was renting space for services from St. John’s United Methodist Church until it closed in 2007. That’s when finding their own space became their top priority. The group rented space at the Riverbottom Saloon while they purchased and renovated the building they currently reside in at 1919 S. Broadway. Getting the MCC into its own space is Trissell’s proudest moment as pastor, especially the day it opened on June 20, 2009. “I saw a faith community that was able to overcome so many financial challenges at the time because of the market dropping. Yet we had a record capital campaign and own our own property,” she said.
here should look like St. Louis. We didn’t have much outreach and so I told them I was very committed to diversity.” And Trissell has seen great improvement with regards to faith and the LGBT community. Under her watch, the MCCGSL joined the Metropolitan Congregations’ United group, and the Holy Ground collaborative. Trissell said she has seen a number of churches accept LGBT members. “We worked with a lot with Central Reform and Faith Aloud on a project for PROMO to identify congregations in the state of Missouri that were open and affirming,” she said. “We’ve made great strides.” Trissell’s last Sunday with the MCCGSL was April 29, but she is leaving St. Louis with a sense of accomplishment and love for her faith community. “I really love this congregation and working with them has been such a gift, personally. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together working with God in this city.” The MCCGSL was founded in October 1972. This past September their choir won Best Large Choir prize at How Sweet the Sound: A Verizon Experience Regional Choir Competition held at the Scottrade Center and went on to compete at nationals in Los Angeles.
Since being pastor, Trissell has transformed the MCC Church from a small community to a large one with a focus on outreach. “My personal mission was around diversity,” Rev. Trissell said. “In one of my first sermons I said I really felt like the church theVitalVOICE.com | 45

On the Go with JMO! Written by Colin Murphy – Senior Writer/Editor Photography by Darin Slyman
S
tate Representative Jeanette Mott Oxford (D-59-St. Louis) has been a steady presence in the Missouri State Legislature whether challenging racism or distinguishing herself as a strong advocate for social justice, anti-poverty, choice and LGBT issues. Missouri’s first out lesbian State Legislator, who is term limited this year, is in a three way primary race for the State Senate seat in Missouri’s 5th District against incumbent State Senator Robin Wright Jones and State Rep. Jamilah Nasheed. (D-60-St. Louis) “My eight years in the Missouri House of Representatives have established a record that people can check and they’ll find that I am principled, persistent, proven and progressive,” says Oxford, better known as JMO. “I’ve been a real champion on some issues that really matter right now. I’ve been, certainly to our community, a sponsor of the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act, a sponsor of the Safe Schools Act – and just by living my life out loud as a lesbian each day in the Missouri Legislature – I help to change hearts and minds.” JMO has been an advocate, educator, writer and organizer on issues of importance to progressive Missourians for more than 30 years. She is remembered by many for her work as Executive Director of Reform Organization of Welfare (ROWEL) from 1991-2000. “We have a real revenue crisis in Missouri,” she explains. “We’re 48th in the nation in revenue generated by our own sources per capita. That’s kind of a policy-wonky statement, but how it translates in real life is that we are underfunding absolutely vital services and programs. We all get hurt by that.”

Oxford points to Missouri being last in the nation for income guidelines for subsidized child care, the states underfunding of public education and inadequate senior care. “Senior Citizen Centers spend enormous amounts of time trying to raise money to provide the Meals on Wheels programs for seniors because the state doesn’t put out enough money,” JMO explains. “Yes – it should be a partnership between the government and private citizens, but people are working themselves to death to keep up with these vital programs.” Having lived in the 5th Senatorial District since 1991, JMO is well aware of the fact that the Missouri General Assembly is overwhelmingly male and overwhelmingly white. Her decision to enter the race did not come easy. “I’d like there to be adequate racial and ethnic diversity in the Senate – and Senate 5 has often been a place where a person of color serves,” she says. “I worked very hard to get the incumbent elected four years ago, but that has not worked out the way I’d hoped.” Incumbent Wright Jones has been under investigation related to her campaign finances and has been sued by a hotel locally around an unpaid bill. After fielding multiple constituent complaints, JMO came to the conclusion that she could no longer support Wright Jones’ reelection and watched to see if someone would enter the race that
she could back. “In the end, no one got into the race that I was enthusiastic about and in the meantime lots of people came to me and said, “Jeanette, please run,’” she continues. “I started reflecting on it and I became more and more convinced that someone with my values needed to get into the race.” JMO is the dean of the Missouri LGBT Caucus which includes Rep. Mike Colona (D-67-St. Louis), Sen. Jolie Justus (D-10-Kansas City) and newly out Rep. Zachary Wyatt (R-02Kirksville.) “I got really choked up [at Wyatt’s press conference],” shares JMO, who has been with her partner, Rev. Dorothy Gannon, a hospice chaplain, for almost 28 years. “I didn’t know it was going to hit me like that when he said that “I am a proud gay man.” I think it was really significant that at least three of his Republican colleagues came to stand behind him and support him.” JMO reminds us that Justus will be term limited in 2014 and that her election would ensure continuity in the State Senate. “The most effective way to break down prejudice is through repeated, positive interactions with the object of your prejudice,” she continues. “Therefore, it’s very important that we all come out and live proudly in front of our friends, neighbors, colleagues, etc. – and that’s how we make progress, I think.”
Asked about Missouri’s much maligned “Don’t Say Gay Bill”, JMO posits that HB2051 is unlikely to pass, but that the LGBT community should be ever ready to do battle against anti-gay legislation that oftentimes paints Missouri as out of touch in the national news. “When we advertize the most backward elements among us so prominently in the news, it probably runs off some folks who might otherwise want to live or work in Missouri, even create jobs in Missouri,” she says. The Aug. 7th Democratic Primary has some politicos concerned that the Senate 5 race along with the heated contest between U.S. Representatives Russ Carnahan and William Lacy Clay could do harm to race relations in St. Louis. In fact, one of JMO’s endorsers was recently accused of putting gay people ahead of African American people by one of her opponents. “I’ve spent decades fighting against racism and I think most of us get it that there is no hierarchy of oppression. Until we’re all free, there’s still a problem,” she states. “We wear multiple identities and there are tens of thousands of African American LGBT people in the St. Louis area. It’s important that we fight on all those fronts and get rid of the barriers to success that some of us experience. We can create the public policy atmosphere in which we can all thrive and grow and pursue happiness.”
JMO reminds readers of their duty as citizens to become involved in the political process citing that people of color and women have had to organize for literally centuries and decades to get to the point of legal equality around things like voting and employment. “[The LGBT community] hasn’t gotten there yet around the employment matter here in Missouri— we do have the right to vote and it’s a duty and an opportunity that we should take real seriously,” she offers. “We should organize ourselves around our vote, so that’s why I suggest that people work with groups like PROMO PAC around how to get behind equality-minded candidates so we shift the political landscape.” “It’s real essential that we reelect the president,” she concludes. “I think, unfortunately, many in the LGBT community do not know what all he has done to move LGBT rights forward. Under Obama, every department of government has looked for ways to address the concerns of LGBT persons. I celebrate that Obama has moved along the continuum from embrace of civil unions to calling for marriage equality. I believe this will give our community a burst of energy to work hard in the 2012 presidential election.” Jeanette Mott Oxford is endorsed by NARAL, The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and PROMO PAC. The 5th Senatorial District encompasses the eastern half of St. Louis City. For more information check out jmo4mo.com. v theVitalVOICE.com | 51
5 Questions with: Michelle McCausland – Miss Gay Missouri 2012 Written by Matt Jamieson Photography by Alex Galindo After a 28-year long journey, Vital VOICE’s own Miss Spirit of St. Louis Michelle McCausland finally captured the title of Miss Gay Missouri, America on April 28 in Columbia, Mo. We caught up with the new MGM 2012 for five questions, including how she feels about combating St. Louis’ masquerading law in 1986.
How long have you been doing drag? For 32 years...damn that’s a long time!
What is it like to have been part of LGBT history, combating St. Louis’ masquerading law with the ACLU in 1986 that led to drag being easier for everyone to do? I really didn’t understand the impact until later on, and now the resurgence of all the things that happened brought back all the memories. And it was a week from hell, when I was in court, but I’m happy that I could help people that do enjoy dressing as they see fit. Who am I to tell someone how to dress, when I dress up like a woman every weekend!
What was going through your head when they called your name as the next Miss Gay Missouri?
It was totally a dream that finally came true, and after that dream had faded a long time ago. I wanted to give it one more try, and YES dreams can come true, I’m living proof!
What does this win mean for you?
It means that I am a part of a most prestigious organization that all my friends have won entry to before me. Now I am a part of something so important and I have waited for a very, very, very long time!
What is next for Miss Gay Missouri?
Now I will be off to Ohio to compete for Miss Gay America in October, I hope to have a amazing year as MGM 2012.
