St. Louis PrideFest 2013 St. Louis, Missouri Greetings: Welcome to the 34th annual St. Louis LGBT Pride Festival, a festival that has shown tremendous growth in size and scope over the last few decades. This year, for the first time ever, St. Louis PrideFest is being held in Downtown St. Louis, and it is very fitting that the theme for 2013 is “Celebrate the Past to Awaken the Future. This week, thousands of individuals have flocked to St. Louis in order to celebrate Pride weekend. PrideFest is one of the many reasons St. Louis has earned a reputation as a gay-friendly City. Each year, Pride St. Louis plans and organizes various fundraising events, including PrideFest. This organization honors individuals for community service and awards a college scholarship annually. Pride St. Louis works to foster an understanding and tolerance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, and it provides an important service to our City. To the out-of-town visitors to the City of St. Louis, I extend best wishes for an enjoyable stay. I encourage you to take advantage of all the many great attractions the City has to offer, and I hope that you will choose to visit St. Louis again and again. Sincerely,

Francis G. Slay Mayor, City of St. Louis

Dear Fellow Community Members, I am honored to officially welcome you and our allies to St. Louis’ 34th annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pride Festival. This is an historic year for Pride St. Louis, Inc., with our move of the festival to Soldiers’ Memorial in Downtown St. Louis. This marks the first time in our history we will be celebrating and marching in the heart of our own city. Our great city of St. Louis is very proud of the LGBT community and it is time to be front and center within our city, not just our community. By holding our annual festival downtown we are showing not only St. Louis, but Missouri and others that we are here and an integral part of the overall community. Our theme this year is “Celebrate the Past to Awaken the Future.” Originally, Pride was held as a tribute to the Stonewall riots which occurred the last weekend of June in 1969. It has since progressed over the years to promote a world where there is full cultural, social and legal equality for all. Without knowledge of where we have been, we will never truly awaken the future of our community. It takes an extraordinary amount of time to produce this festival, and I would like to personally thank the Board of Directors of Pride St. Louis, Inc., their significant others and our volunteers for the dedication you have shown to this organization in order to make this festival happen. Without all of you, this would not even be possible. I would like to thank Darin Slyman, Colin Murphy and the entire staff of the Vital VOICE for their hard work and service as our presenting LGBT media sponsor for this year and for their assistance in producing this Pride Guide for us. Lastly, please enjoy the festival responsibly and remember to carry the feeling of Pride you have this weekend with you all year long. In Pride,

Staci Stift President, Pride St. Louis, Inc. Pride St. Louis is a tax-exempt educational and charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, dedicated to increasing the awareness of the general public of the presence of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) individuals in the community in an effort to eliminate prejudice and achieve harmony. Donations to Pride St. Louis, Inc. are deductible as charitable donations.

1969

June 1969 marked the Stonewall Riots in New York, widely hailed as the catalyst for the modern LGBT rights and Pride movements. October 1969 was also St. Louis’ Stonewall where the arrest of nine drag queens outside of a local gay bar sparked the first LGBT rights organization in the city: The Mandrake Society.

The first LGBT Pride Celebration occurred in 1980, when it was called “Lesbians and Gays Walk for Charity.” Sponsored by the Magnolia Committee (so called because their meetings were held in an apartment on Magnolia Street), the event began a tradition which is still strong today in St. Louis.

12

Pride Guide 2013

In 1981 the Magnolia Committee banded together with yet another committee and formed the St. Louis Lesbian and Gay Pride Celebration Committee. The newly formed Pride Committee proceeded to plan a Pride Celebration to be held annually every June (except twice) during Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.

Pride’s name officially became Pride St. Louis, Inc. in 1994. The organization has held the festival and parade in the CWE and Forest Park (1980-1997) and South Grand and Tower Grove Park (1998-2012). The event has grown in size and scope through community, media and corporate support.

Since the first “PrideFest” in 1981, the event has grown in size, attendance and scope. Each year the Pride Committee plans and organizes not only the PrideFest, but also various fund raising events and other entertainment throughout the month of June.

2013

2013 marks Pride’s 34th anniversary in the STL and for the first time will call downtown St. Louis home with a Market St. Parade and Festival around Soldiers’ Memorial.

Jim Hoefer Award

Felton T. Day Award

The Jim Hoefer Award is presented to an organization that best exemplifies what it means to serve St. Louis’ LGBT Community. The St. Louis LGBT History Project was founded in 2007, originally as a blog by Steven Brawley, looking for ways to document local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history. Over the first year, things began to take shape, and now the LGBT History Project is a community — preserving our tribe’s many treasures, stories and oral histories for future generations. Ian Darnell and Colin Murphy help round out the trio of historians who are constantly on the lookout for new finds. The St. Louis LGBT History Project is an official program of the LGBT Center of St. Louis.

16

Pride Guide 2013

The Felton T. Day Award is presented to a person not associated with Pride St. Louis whose service to the LGBT Community goes above and beyond the call of duty and who best exemplifies the spirit of leadership of service to one’s community. Tom has participated in Pride for 25 years. Tom has coordinated volunteer efforts for the liquor booth (in coordination with Team St. Louis), the beer booth, GLASS softball and Team St. Louis booths, and organized the first grass and sand volleyball tournaments as fundraisers for Pride. He has been involved in the community by volunteering with many organizations and has also been a parttime bartender at many of our local establishments throughout the last 20+ years.

Will Roth Chuck Charleston Award The Chuck Charleston Award is presented to a former member of Pride St. Louis who has dedicated of themselves and extraordinary amount of energy to ensuring that the Pride movement is further strengthened through their work both in the community and certainly on behalf of Pride St. Louis. Will Roth wants to be remembered for his service to the LGBT community. His record of involvement is exemplary. He’s been on the boards of the Gateway Stonewall Democrats, Pride St. Louis and the Primetimers. He is on the Governor’s Council of PROMO, a member of the Federal Club and Dinner Committee for the Human Rights Campaign. He was also involved with unions, and participated in the 2003 strike against the St. Louis Food Employers’ Council.

howard meyer Lisa Wagaman Lifetime Community Service Award The Lisa Wagaman Lifetime Community Service Award is presented to an individual who has spent much of their life to further the Pride movement and LGBT causes. Howard Meyer may be known as the owner of the famed Complex nightclub (1989-2011), but he’s equally recognized for his involvement in the fight for LGBT equality and city, state and federal politics. Meyer served as an openly gay 6th Ward Democratic Committee member and hosted countless fundraisers starring Governors, Senators and Presidential Candidates. Indeed, Meyer had his finger on the pulse of local politics. What’s more, there were few LGBT non-profits whose Board he did not sit on throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The local LGBT Icon served as both Mayor Francis Slay’s LGBT and HIV/AIDS liaison.
