Known as one of the world’s premier Cher impersonators for nearly two decades, Michaels is dedicated to professionalism and excellence. She offers a comprehensive collection of Cher’s “Bob Mackie-inspired” costume wardrobe and a repertoire of the iconic singer’s legendary performances from the last four decades. Michaels has been featured on numerous television productions such as The Cher E! True Hollywood Story, The Cher A&E Biography, MAD TV and E! Talk Soup. When Michaels competed on Drag Race in 2011, she was praised by Mama Ru for elevating the competition forever, and was cast as Professor Chad Michaels in RuPaul’s Drag U. PrEP: Is It Worth It? Back in July 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first use of a drug to prevent HIV infection called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. text DENNY PATTERSON art MELANIE LAYER
It is used as a way for people who do not have HIV, but who are at substantial risk of getting it, to protect themselves from possible infection by taking a daily pill. The pill, also known by its brand name, Truvada, contains two HIV medications (tenofovir and emtricitabine) that are used in combination to keep the virus from establishing a permanent infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk by up to 92 percent when taken consistently. If not taken consistently, PrEP is much less effective. In order to provide maximum protection against HIV and STDs, condoms and PrEP should be used in combination. PrEP will not protect from STDs such as syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea. Although PrEP has a high approval rating thus far, PrEP is still a medicine. And as usual, the cost is not cheap. “I believe the cost for PrEP is about $1700 a month,” says Matt Swango, a Program Coordinator for the Saint Louis Effort for AIDS. “However, there are many programs out there that will help pay for the cost of the medication. Insurance covers it because it’s a preventive medicine. Gilead has a co-pay assistance program which helps cover co-pay up to $300 a month. Then you have patient assistance programs, which will cover the entire cost of the drug if you make less than $59,000 a year. Insured and uninsured.”As of this moment, Swango has not heard of anyone having to pay the full $1700 because most people can get the entire cost of the drug covered through one of those assisted programs. However, some people are still questioning if PrEP is still worth it. “I think people should take PrEP because it’s another tool in the HIV prevention toolbox,” Swango says. “Nothing to date has been proven 100 percent effective for stopping HIV transmission, including condoms, but the more things we use to protect ourselves, the better. I believe that if we’re looking at this from a cost effectiveness standpoint, it is cheaper to have someone on PrEP for a period of time than to pay an entire HIV regiment throughout their lifespan.” Albert Anglin and Phil Gill, both of St. Louis, are currently taking PrEP. Due to their health insurance and the Gilead co-pay assistance program, neither of them has had to pay any money out of pocket. “I absolutely believe that PrEP is worth it,” Anglin says. “With the number of people being diagnosed with HIV, and being a sexually active gay male myself, having added protection is fantastic. I can’t assume that every sexually active male who has sex with men is using condoms 100 percent of the time. What I can do is take control of my own body and take the preventive steps to protect myself.”Gill agrees. “I think that with all of the available assistance, the cost is absolutely worth it,” he says. “I went on PrEP because I wanted to take control of my own sexual health and be sure I was being responsible. When you’re also part of a serodiscordant relationship, you want to make sure you’re covered as much as possible to allow for the safest way to be intimate in your relationship. There are a lot of resources out there available to help pay for PrEP, so there is no reason finances should get in the way.”Because PrEP is still a relatively new item, some doctors are not familiar with the drug and are apprehensive about prescribing it. However, anyone who can write a prescription is able to write a prescription for PrEP.“I think working with and finding a pharmacy and doctor who is very familiar with PrEP and knows all the ways to access it will be a lot less painful and stressful,” Anglin says. “If your doctor or pharmacy is now aware of PrEP, then you may want to find another doctor or pharmacy because they are not going to be able to get as much access help for you.” “It is important for you to be your own best health care advocate,” Swango says. “If you can’t find a doctor who is meeting your sexual health care needs, then you might want to find another one.”In order to find out more information on PrEP, its cost, assistance programs or how to generally reduce HIV risk, Swango is more than willing to sit down and chat with you. You may contact him through the Saint Louis Effort for AIDS at www.stlefa.org. Other resources can be found on the web such as Project Inform or Facebook pages for PrEP. V thevitalVOICE.com

DR. MICHELLE ROBIN WHAT DOES LIVING WELL MEAN TO YOU
Everyday, it seems, I wake up to a slower (much slower) metabolism and weight that wasn’t there yesterday. I am tired all the time and can’t seem to drag myself to the gym that I pay monthly for and have been for well over a year. I find every fad diet possible and give them a go for about a week or two. I torture myself with documentaries that further prove that I, like millions of Americans, have not been doing anything right. I eat what’s convenient. I work my day-to-day, clocking in and clocking out; I am active, yet diet and exercise remain weaknesses. I do not take care of myself. I am not well. I haven’t felt like the person I was for 30 years and have been struggling to figure out which step to take first. That’s when I realized that the important steps I have been missing all along are education and self-preservation. Wellness starts within. Wellness can be defined in so many different ways; it’s not just eating ‘correctly’ and killing yourself on a treadmill. Meditation, yoga, body and soul alignment are crucial in getting our bodies where they belong. Health is not just a number. Dr. Michelle Robin, D.C., founder and chief wellness officer at Your Wellness Connection in Shawnee, Kansas, is spreading this message like a warm summer breeze. I picked up her most recent book The E Factor and what I am discovering is life altering. I just wish I lived closer to her Wellness Center. Regardless of distance, her teachings are empowering. “My Mission is to inspire people to connect to their wellness. Being well is not the absence of disease,” says Dr. Robin. “It is the flourishing of the whole being - mind, body and spirit. You cannot heal the body without healing the heart. No one is perfect. We all are on a wellness journey, a continuum of well being. I strive to help my clients and all those I touch through talks, writing, etc., to accept where they are on their journey and move forward, one decision at a time, understanding the holistic nature of wellness, intertwining their mind, body and spirit to reach their goals.” Dr. Robin, who has been in the world of wellness nearly three decades, is an international speaker, best-selling author and practicing chiropractor. Dr. Robin is also a consultant for a long list of businesses, nonprofits, and faith-based communities, developing a culture of wellness. She has worked with a variety of groups and organizations including Young Presidents Organization (YPO), AMC Theaters, Working Mother Magazine’s Worklife Congress, Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program, University of Kansas, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Unity Church (throughout the U.S.) and so many others. She is the author of The E Factor: Engage, Energize, Enrich- Three Steps to Vibrant Health, Wellness on a Shoestring: Seven Habits for a Healthy Life, as well as it’s companion curriculum, The Wellness on a Shoestring Program, and co-author of Succeeding In Spite of Everything.

The E Factor: Engage, Energize, Enrich – Three Steps to Vibrant Health, addresses the three factors that will move you forward to optimal well-being. Dr. Robin shares how to engage a wellness lifestyle, first by knowing your why, setting your intention, planning your path, and finding your “tribe.” Next, she helps you understand how to energize your life, addressing adrenal fatigue, food as fuel, and life energy. Finally, Dr. Robin reminds you that your well-being includes life enriching factors like impacting your community, having healthy relationships, being in gratitude and serving others. Each chapter concludes with exercises, tips, recipes or planning tools to guide you in the next steps of your wellness journey. Your Wellness Connection is the unification of all of her talents. The Center focuses on chiropractic therapy, Chinese medicine, massage therapy, energy medicine, counseling, nutritional and wellness coaching, as well as movement arts. Thanks to modern technology, the information that Dr. Robin provides is just a click away to get you started on a journey all your own. Dr. Robin also has a very successful and loved radio broadcast: Small Changes...Big Shifts. Listening to her radio talk show gives us another chance to educate ourselves and brings awareness to what we need to be focusing on daily. Dr. Robin teaches many things, but a favorite focus is that small changes in one’s daily life add up to big shifts in our overall lives. When speaking on the phone, I asked her for advice for those of us getting started on this journey of wellness and her answer was simple: “Make those small changes, pick one thing to work on and then grow from there. Making simple small changes over time leads to a complete overhaul of self.” “It’s the small changes that stick and ultimately compound to create big shifts in our holistic well-being,” Dr. Robin continues. “Simple and consistent action is what carves canyons out of rock and helps the tortoise win the race. The same is true for creating and maintaining healthy habits and mind-body-spirit well being.” Every Wednesday at noon, tune in to Small Changes...Big Shifts where Dr. Robin and her guests share wisdom, knowledge, real life stories and practical tips to inspire and inform you as you move forward on your journey of wellness. For more information and links to Small Changes... Big Shifts, visit drmichellerobin.com and yourwellnessconnection.com. Here’s to a healthier tomorrow - today! V

BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL:
KHALIA COLLIER
KHALIA COLLIER IS A ST. LOUIS NATIVE WITH DEEP ROOTS IN THE CITY. She is an innovative entrepreneur, dedicated to building a thriving basketball franchise, The St. Louis Surge, in her home state. She is a strong believer that St. Louis can support a women’s team, and is making it a point to see her strategic processes through. Admitting there is a problem is often the first step, and Collier is determined to eradicate the flaws in the current paradigm. In today’s society, we acknowledge that women make a fraction of their male counterparts’ income in any given field. Professional sports are a prime example. We are told that women are not as marketable and not as solid of an investment. Women’s soccer and basketball have shown some promise for making the big numbers come in, but there is quite a long way to go - and I’m not just referencing salaries.
18
May 2015
There are hundreds of male sports teams spanning dozens of specialties. We can often name one team per state per sport. In Kansas City and St. Louis we have The Royals, The Cardinals, The Rams, The Chiefs. We are focusing on where funding is going to come from in order to build a bigger and better arena to play in. We have remodeled and rebuilt fields to accommodate the growing crowds. Name one women’s team that gets half that attention, despite comparable stats on the court. Name one Missouri female sport that gets any primetime coverage. What do women in sports do when they finish on a competitive level in college? Where do they go? Collier is quick to answer: They become CEO’s and executives of companies. Forbes Magazine has reported that 82% of female top executives played competitive sports of some kind, the CEOs of PepsiCo and Kraft Foods to name two. These women may not see the million-dollar contracts from sports endorsements, but are instead running the companies that create the endorsements. Khalia Collier is making a difference, bridging the gap and branding a future of women’s athletics here in St. Louis. It is bigger than the dream of big money contracts; she is proving that women can play the game, make a difference and make those power connections to become the next top executive. It’s so much bigger than basketball. The St. Louis Surge has been a part of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) since 2008, a professional development women’s league that consists of 60 member teams from major cities across the United States. The focus of the program is to promote sport participation and provide players the opportunity to meet with recruiters and scouts from colleges, universities and professional teams in different countries. In March 2011, The St. Louis Surge finalized a new coaching structure under new ownership by Collier. The St. Louis Surge currently consists of players from different basketball backgrounds who have come together to show their love and passion for the sport. All players have had high school and college basketball careers and have continued the game of basketball post graduation. Participation in the WBCBL allows athletes’ talents and skills to be evaluated by professional basketball scouts and agents. The network of agents has a proven track record of job placement for dozens of athletes who are currently playing professional basketball and fosters their development for when the game is over. The St. Louis Surge Women’s Professional Basketball Team is on a mission to be role models and act as mentors in the St. Louis region while fostering a culture of leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork and excellence. “The St. Louis Surge will set the standard for women’s basketball not only at a competitive level but as role models in the community. The Surge will make our mark in St. Louis and grow women’s sports in St. Louis while building
The vision is not simple, it’s brilliant. Handpicking each member of this elite team is key. The caliber of each woman chosen to play is what makes the whole thing come together. The recruiting process is the most important, as each member has to fit the criteria built by Khalia’s idea of Surge. “Members of the team are looked up to as leaders, not just on the court, but also in the community and in their everyday lives. From our community outreach programs to our games, leadership is instilled in every St. Louis Surge player.” With a history in basketball herself, Collier was a Division I recruit in high school. She attended Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri where she was a shooting guard for two years, and finished at Missouri Baptist University where she played as a guard/forward. Today she is rebranding the face of women’s athletics through The St. Louis Surge. Collier has developed a strategic business model that focuses on marketing strategy, diversity awareness and inclusion, and WNBA research and performance measures. Using this model, she has been able to work collaboratively with prominent executives, corporations and nonprofits to build the Surge brand and develop new initiatives while encompassing the community, instilling the notion that all Surge players are leaders and mentors in the communities they serve. Collier has led the Surge organization in completing several hours of community service by giving back to youth, leading speaking arrangements and seminars as well as providing a platform for athletic and educational growth through skills clinics. Collier values leadership, hard work, education, excellence and sportsmanship: all reasons she believes The Surge will succeed as both an organization and a professional team. When asked why she took over ownership of the St. Louis Surge, Collier stated, “Now is the time for St. Louis to build the platform and lead the evolution of women’s sports through creative means With the support of the community, The Surge will become a permanent member of the St. Louis family. The Surge provides more than entertainment, we provide a social need of empowerment.” The Surge finished the 2014 season 14-1 and are sporting some beautiful Championship rings. They are 2014 WBCBL National Champions and also won the Midwest Regional Championship title. All St. Louis Surge games are played on UMSL’s campus in the Mark Twain Building located at One University Blvd, St Louis, Mo 63121. The Surge Home Opener Is June 13th, 2015 and AllInclusive season tickets are on sale for $75 and include a host of VIP access to the team and the games. (Price is limited and only available until May 31st) General admission to all home games is $8. Student tickets with valid ID are $5. The Spirit of Pride Hits St. Charles For the first time ever, St. Charles County will be hosting its first ever LGBT Pride Festival on Saturday, May 30 from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on the St. Charles Community College campus. Pride St. Charles is a project of the St. Charles PFLAG chapter, which was started ten years ago by Jill and Bill Aul as a way to support other parents of LGBT loved ones. PFLAG is a national support group organization that has 350,000 members around the country. There are currently three active chapters in the St. Louis metro area, including one in Belleville, Ill., and St. Louis County. Jill is the President of the St. Charles chapter. “The idea of having a Pride festival in St. Charles County was the brainchild of Beth Finder, who is the Vice President of the St. Charles PFLAG chapter,” Aul says. “She was staffing the PFLAG booth last year with my husband, Bill, when a conversation ensued about how nice it would be to have some sort of small Pride celebration closer to home. Beth and her husband, Frank, are the parents of a gay son. Bill and I are the parents of a transgender son.” In the months that followed, many other interested folks joined forces to form a planning committee that has expanded to 35 people who meet regularly. As a result of the strong interest, combined with recent social and mainstream media attention, the idea of a small gathering has blossomed into a full-fledged Pride festival that promises to be exciting and well attended. “This inaugural festival in St. Charles County will serve LGBT people, their families, friends, allies and the general population who want a festival closer to home,” Aul says. “Many may choose to attend the larger St. Louis festival, as well as other small ones throughout the region. Other may not wish to drive the distance to St. Louis city. Some folks may prefer a venue with ample free parking and smaller crowds. For those who live in more rural areas, the St. Charles County location will provide a more convenient location to attend a Pride festival. For those who grew up in St. Charles County, and perhaps who left the area because it was not an open place to live as an LGBT person, this festival serves an important purpose.
PRIDE ST. CHARLES SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Not sure what do to at Pride St. Charles? Check out the schedule of events that will be going on all day long. Don't miss out on the fun! Pride St. Charles will be held on Saturday, May 30 from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on the St. Charles Community College campus located at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville, Mo.
We want people of all ages, orientations and identities to know that our area is a welcome place for everyone. We are working hard to make our festival family-friendly, with the emphasis on PG-rated entertainment and an atmosphere that will appeal to everyone.” At this time, plans for the day include an opening ceremony with local LGBT veterans and dignitaries, musical entertainment, foods and beverage trucks, non-profit vendors, health information and a family fun area. On-site counselors will be providing brief, private appointments free of charge and other family-oriented activities will be scheduled. An official after-party will be held at The Babylon, directly across the campus on Mid Rivers Mall Drive. Other area Pride festivals such as Pride St. Louis and MetroEast Pride have been incredibly helpful with Pride St. Charles’ endeavors by lending vendor tents and offering help and advice throughout the planning process. “From recommending which company to contact for port-apotties, to event insurance, who sells the best ice cream, and everything in between, they have been invaluable,” Aul says. “We could not have planned this large event without them and we are extremely grateful.” Aul hopes that those who attend Pride St. Charles will have a wonderful time and that it will eventually become an annual event. “We want LGBT citizens in and around St. Charles County, along with the general public, to celebrate diversity with us as we remember the events of the Stonewall Riots of 1969 that launched the earliest Pride Festivals around the country,” she says. “We hope that those who are unable or unwilling to attend for any reason will also take notice that this is happening, and that the effects will be positive for now and into the future. We are very proud and pleased to have garnered support from local area businesses and corporations in the form of monetary donations as well as gifts in-kind.” For more information on Pride St. Charles, please visit their website, pridestcharles.org, or Facebook page, facebook.com/ pridestcharlesevent. If interested in volunteering, donating or renting vendor space, email pridestcharles@gmail.com or call (636) 928-5639. Deadline to become a vendor is May 15. V text DENNY PATTERSON

community. I always kiddingly but seriously say I am just the right man for the job. It was the perfect storm I have a Nigerian father and IrishAmerican mother and understood the harshness of our culture and legislature dictating whom we can love.
though we knew of each other we instantly formed a bond that will last forever. Chris’s epic rebuttal turned Mr. Burns letter into a global issue.
Your response to Maryland State Delegate Emmett C. Burns, Jr. never had an official response from The Ravens. Did anyone reach out unofficially to help support?
How do you find your current career in comparison to your time in the NFL?
Ravens President Dick Cass reached out to me personally and told me to continue to be myself and keep sticking up for what I believe in and he made that clear that I should deliver that message to the media. He also mentioned to me that the Ravens organization does not believe in discrimination in anyway shape or form I thought that was very honorable of him to have my back the way that he did. For that I will always appreciate and respect the Ravens organization and Dick Cass.
Chris and I continue to collaborate on different equality based events. I sit on the board for athlete Ally an organization that believes that everybody should have the chance to participate in athletic activities regardless of their race religion sexual orientation nationality ethnicity gender what have you. We did a collaboration for Sochi and American apparel called P6 reinforcing the Olympic doctrine of equality in sports from the above referenced categories I mentioned. We also had a great opportunity to speak at Google along with Scott Fujita, we have done podcasts for Foxsports.com Amicus Briefs. The list goes on and on and will continue to work together until we eradicate discrimination.
It’s funny three days after winning the Super Bowl in 2013 my wife basically forced me into an Orangetheory fitness class threatening me with food of all things. The moment I took the class I felt the energy I knew this was something that I wanted to do. I went into the corporate offices and I made my presence about from there I was able to team up with two amazing partners and be the first to market in Los Angeles and the south Bay Area. Have you two officially met prior? Stay in touch? Work together?
What was your reaction when Chris Kluwe stepped up to the plate?
What are your thoughts on Kluwe’s comments implying he was released because of his stance on Same-Sex Marriage?
Bruins stick together, having played against Kluwe for several years I always knew he was a great guy and although we did not really know each other personally even
I believe there’s validity in his statement and the way he feels about the situation. Even though homophobia and gay players in the locker room is not the
800-pound gorilla in the corner of the room that it once was, it is still a chimpanzee. Did you receive any backlash from other players/teammates for your stance on equality? Of course there was backlash and it always came from a religious ignorance that being gay is a sin. I always had to remind them that their religious freedoms should not be used to take away the freedom from others. As a whole, do you think the NFL is moving toward becoming a more accepting organization? Yes the NFL, society and government are all moving in the right direction. Some are moving faster than others but, nonetheless, we are progressing. In locker room type situations were you outspoken on people using gay as a put-down/slur? I would routinely remind my teammates not to say gay slurs as it happened very frequently. They would say I don’t mean it like that. Then I would tell them to say what they mean and don’t use gay as a replacement for what ever slander they couldn’t express themselves with. What are your thoughts on the recent in-the-closet bisexual NFL player who said Michael Sam doesn’t speak for other gay players?
“Of course there was backlash and

University in Washington. He mentioned that the support of our lives especially in the athletic world was a huge influence on his decision. I frequently get messages via social media from high school and college athletes thanking me for my stance and that I have saved their lives. There is no way to quantify how it makes me feel inside to be able to help people in such a deep and personal level without ever meeting them are seeing them. It boggles my mind to think how many people could be helped and saved one thing about it if we were all just a little bit more accepting.
There are so many issues that are near and dear to me whether it is equality, the environment, education, healthcare, sustainability. Professional athletes are not role models, nor should they raise your kids but I think it is important for me to use my platform to influence change.
Since Michael Sam’s coming out, there really haven’t been any outspoken NFL players taking a stand for equality. As a professional athlete, did you feel a responsibility to use your platform for a positive impact?
The Rams need to stop playing around in St. Louis and move to Los Angeles to become a multi billion-dollar organization and win a championship. V
Do you think other athletes have the same responsibility? Only if they choose to. Society shouldn’t expect nor demand it. Last but not least, what do you think about Ram’s moving to LA?

Michael Sam should not have to speak for other gay players, he had mentioned early on that he is not much of an advocate but that is what allies like myself Scott and Chris are for. Do you feel like backlash like that, from within the LGBT community, may stop others from coming out in support of Equality? There are a lot of things that a lot of people are sensitive to but we can’t let that stop progress. One day this will be a nonissue but is it going to be one day or 50 years? It’s up to us. Can you share any stories of any young LGBT athletes who have been impacted by having a straight professional ally speaking up for them? Conor Mertens is a buddy of mine. May 2015
He closes deals, he puts on a show, he high-kicks his success. The man is Fredrik Eklund, and he is a master of his craft. To most, Eklund has got it all: a successful career, popular reality TV show, stable love life and an enviable Manhattan lifestyle. We can’t argue, Eklund’s stock is pretty high these days. He is what many people would call the “American Dream,” a refreshing sight to see considering the seemingly decaying nature of the ideal. Born in Sweden and immigrating to America with next to nothing, Eklund got his start selling sandwiches outside of a Manhattan theatre. But from selling paninis to penthouses, Eklund has taken over the New York City real estate market, now ranked as the number one real estate agent in Manhattan. How did he get from point A to point B? While it’s not easy, it’s also not as complicated as you might think. In his new book, The Sell, Eklund makes clear that the first and most basic part of sales is selling yourself. As a “Million-Dollar Lister,” expert high kicker and overall outgoing personality, Fredrick sells us by simply being the character that he is. By being able to deliver that individuality, you are able to sell your most important asset: you. Well, at least that’s what it says in the book, and we’re buying it.
“I always get the question, ‘What person has mentored you?’ I don’t have one of those people,” he says. “I always say, I cook my own soup from a lot of different people— I took ingredients from different personalities, but the one force of energy is New York. I came here not knowing the language, part of the language, not knowing the name of the streets of the neighborhoods. I just always felt a love for New York, kind of like Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex in the City when she said, ‘Who needs a boyfriend when you have New York City?’”
Development of anyone’s character is influenced by their upbringing— what is instilled in them at a young age. A childhood can be a struggle, which could only break you or make you stronger. It could be a breeze, which could give you an incentive to do something on your own. For Frederick, a humble beginning is something that keeps him grounded, and a tight-knitted family keeps him in check.
“[When] I moved here to New York, I started looking for a book like [The Sell],” Frederik says. “Some sort of guidebook that talks about being successful in hopes that I would find one.”
Eklund’s book is dedicated to his brother, Iggy. “He keeps me balanced. He is back home in Sweden like the rest of my family,” Eklund says. “It’s not so much that he never pushed me to go New York to become a realtor broker or that success and material things are important, but it’s quite the opposite. That I value: my family, my brother and my parents.” Whether or not you have friends or family that motivate you, some sort of an external inspiration is meaningful as a catalyst to drive you, to spur you to move higher— be it another personality, role model or basic object. For Fredrik, it’s quite simple: New York City.
We all know that there is no step-by-step guide on how to be rich, famous, successful or powerful, but a book like Fredrik’s can be somewhat of a basic tool, like being in touch with your personality and knowing what drives you. But why his book? And why is he giving away his secrets?
Fredrik never found that book, at least not one that was prevalent enough to keep up with the world we live in today. “Society, social media and pop culture has changed so much, the world with it, I thought that it was time for a more modern version,” Eklund continues. “When I reached number one, which was last year, I really felt it was time to package everything I had learned about selling, the last decade or so since I came to New York, and write this book.” Being at the top is tough, with no place to go but down and every competitor venturing to snag that top spot. The stress is not lost on Eklund, though. In fact, he loves it. “I’m not afraid of competition if that’s your question, text KEVIN SCHMIDT art F. SCOTT SCHAFER/BRAVO

Because of social media in particular, exposing and integrating your true self has reinvented the way people, and businesses, do things. You can be a completely open book, revealing your day-to-day activities by utilizing the platform and generating an audience that can be engaged in what you are doing. Eklund does just that to keep his followers a part of his daily routine, and with more than 107,000 Twitter followers and 286,000 Instagram followers, he keeps his audience updated on nearly an hourly basis. Whether you are a small-business owner looking to garner customers or a mega-celebrity looking to gratify your audience, the use on this personalized (and free) publicity is something that can easily show your audience the real you.
I thrive on that,” he says. “People are going to read my secrets and come to compete with me to try to excel. I find it kind of rewarding, it’s the same kind of feeling when I do speaker engagements to hopefully inspire people.” The Sell is a revealing piece of Fredrik’s mind, providing a basic framework for the skill along with tips and tricks to personalize your sell and make it your own. Chapters like “Dress the Part,” “Make ‘Em Smile” and “Pitch Perfect” all emphasize the need for individuality and presence, acknowledging that you already have the skills you need within yourself, and knowing how to translate those attributes into star quality. “This book makes an art out of personal realization. If you want to stand up and speak, read this book,” says Zach Wahls, LGBT Advocate and Author. The book is praised by many of Eklund’s peers, including Ivanka Trump, Andy Cohen and Barbara Corcoran, ABC’s Shark Tank investor and Founder of The Corcoran Group. The number one trait I always looked for when I was hiring someone for my company and what I look for now when I’m investing in entrepreneurs on Shark Tank is passion, a need to succeed,” says Corcoran. “Someone who’d rather die than not be the best. That’s Fredrik, and after reading this book, that will be you, too.” Some of the chapters in The Sell go into more poignant detail, like “Expand Your Reach” and “F&ck! Stop The Presses,” where Eklund details one of his strongest business practices: his use of the media.

“Looking at the music industry, Taylor Swift, as I mention in my book, is a good example because she is not wearing any mask or trying to pretend to be something she’s not,” Eklund explains. “She’s very strategic in her social media. One of the many things that she said was ‘In the future, for good and for bad, artists will get record deals based on the numbers of engagement of followers.’” And while not all of us can be part of a successful reality television show, being the star of Bravo’s Million-Dollar Listing: New York is an opportunity for Eklund to display his personality and selling knacks in an entertaining way to a wider audience. “That’s the great thing about doing [Million Dollar Listing: New York], when I find that people are actually tuning in to learn some things from me or my negotiation tactics,” Eklund explains. “I thought I was kind of entertaining and that the properties were actually going to be great, but the people emailing and calling saying ‘I became a real estate agent because of you,’ ‘I got my license because of you,’ ‘We play your episodes in our offices and we learn your techniques from the show’ is very rewarding to hear.” People who watch Fredrik on television may get the impression that he is, well, crazy. He embraces it, and so do the people that know him the best. “My family thought I was crazy moving with no money or knowledge,” Fredrik says. “Back then, when I started my company in Sweden, everyone here in New York said I was crazy to start a company on the other side of the world in a different time zone. I’ve always gone my own way, did my own thing. Sometimes it can be very lonely but very rewarding. When you succeed, again, from other people’s advice, it’s a great feeling to prove to people and myself that I can do these things.” We all have our quirks and flaws, but using these to your advantage is something that will not only make you an individual, it will make you a better salesperson and a more respected leader among your peers.
“PEOPLE ARE GOING TO READ MY SECRETS AND COME TO COMPETE WITH ME TO TRY TO EXCEL. I FIND IT KIND OF REWARDING, IT’S THE SAME KIND OF FEELING WHEN I DO SPEAKER ENGAGEMENTS TO HOPEFULLY INSPIRE PEOPLE.”
“It’s all about sticking out and being remembered and being able to back it up,” Fredrik says. “Being really good at or the best at what you do. I try to make everyone laugh, I do my high kick, and I make them look beyond Fredrik the real estate agent and more the funny, hopefully kind and loving guy that I am. That’s something I don’t think a lot about, but I learn to maybe realize that it comes natural for me.” From being an immigrant to being openly gay in the business, Fredrik has consistently been upfront about who he is. “I’ve been lucky I think. Maybe because I came from Sweden, which is very open in that regard to New York which is a clearly a diverse city,” he says. “I think due to the fact, my whole adult life I’ve been open about that and being able to talk to freely about who I am, it hasn’t been any real situations where I had to compromise who I am for that. Even in the business world, I have been completely open and have integrated that as part of my success. Maybe for the first years or so, I was nervous to say that I was gay or that I was from Sweden because I didn’t have any experience to not be so open about those things.” Naturally, if you have the ability to be honest and comfortable about being who you are, the result is a liberating shot of self-confidence. It comes across as more of a respectable quality that makes it more difficult for people to judge in a negative way. While you’re not hiding anything, it’s still a vulnerable position to set yourself in. “That’s easier said than done, to finding that self and going back before you were an adult,” Fredrik says. “Playing up the good and playing down the bad within you and displaying that person to the world is about being a good salesperson. When you know how to sell yourself, you can sell really anything. That’s why in the beginning when I started writing the book, it was suppose to be a handbook in real estate. Then I decided it doesn’t matter what I’m selling.
Doesn’t matter if I’m selling real estate or cupcakes, it’s obvious it’s two different industries, but the trick is to become; to pitch, to negotiate, and to close the deal, and of course to celebrate that closing of the deal- those are all the same. That made it very universal when I opened it up to everyone.”Being focused on success and the sell is great, but that’s not necessarily life. Toward the beginning of the book, Fredrik recalls a certain time when he refers to becoming “obsessed” with the art of the sell. Obsessions with work can be healthy, but tricky when you also have a successful life outside of work. “That’s the challenge isn’t it?” he says. “It’s been my entire life, and I’m trying and getting better at it. I’m trying to find that balance.” No doubt that when you become “obsessed,” other components of your life take a hit. That leads you to sacrifice, even sacrificing your own success for the sake of happiness. “You have to write down your priorities and look at them to try and make it all work, which is not easy” he continues. “I’m having this discussion with Derrick right now because we’re having a baby. With a baby, it’s not probably going to be possible to stay number one because the priorities shift and that’s okay, that’s how it should be. I guess then my obsession would be from turning what I have been doing to what I will be doing, which is being a father.” With a dashing British husband and their first baby on the way, some of the very dreams that viewers and fans have seen Frederik express on television are actually coming true. And when it comes to married life, it seems his “obsession” is being tamed and balanced. In his chapter, “Eat, Pray, Cash In,” Fredrik recalls the importance of rewarding yourself and taking advantage of what perseverance, balance and being yourself yields: Have a spa day, buy something fabulous, take up a hobby, or simply buy some fresh flowers! In the grand scheme of all that is Fredrik, it’s good to know that sometimes it’s the little things that still keep him, and the rest of us, a little more sound. V

Game Plan One Year Until the OutGames Hit St. Louis text CHRIS ANDOE art NORTH AMERICAN OUTGAMES A Rocky Rollout in Denver
It’s hard to imagine now, but in the early years creating such a safe space meant providing a secret gym that required a password.
“We could not be more excited or honored,” said Team Colorado’s R. Tony Smith in a press release. “This is a win for Denver, Colorado and the United States, and all I can say is, ‘Let’s Go Denver!’” Denver was awarded the North American OutGames to great fanfare in 2011, but much goes into pulling off the weeklong celebration of competition, passion, diversity and inclusion, and GLISA (the Gay & Lesbian International Sports Association- North America) decided to terminate the city’s bid in 2013 when it seemed preparations were stalled.
What to Expect The OutGames will be held May 27 through June 4, 2016, and will consist of a multi-event sports competition, on-going cultural celebrations and a three-day human rights conference.
“We really did not want to take this action,” said Bruce Townsend, President of GLISA North America. “But we have not been kept informed of any significant development in the planning of the three components that make up an OutGamesSports, Culture and Human Rights.”
Visitor’s Commission,” Tejada recalled. And while cities like Las Vegas couldn’t get all the ingredients together, and others like Palm Springs ultimately decided to consider bidding on a future event versus scrambling to meet the grueling deadlines, all the parties in St. Louis came together beautifully and ultimately secured the games.
Seizing Opportunities
Team St. Louis Backstory
Team St. Louis President Alice Tejada, who won a gold medal at the Vancouver games in 2011, was surprised by the collapse of Denver’s bid and immediately began investigating what it would take for St. Louis to become the first American city to host the events, which draw five thousand participants from all over North America.
“In 1982 four athletes went to the Gay Games in San Francisco and said it was the most amazing experience of their lives” Tejada says, describing that trip as the spark.
“We only had four weeks to submit the proposal, and to make it all come together I’d need buy-in from the city, community groups and the Convention &

The four founded Team St. Louis that same year to encourage others to participate in sports, and with each Gay Games the local contingent grew. At the core of TSL’s mission is “to foster a safe environment in which individuals are encouraged to express themselves freely through athletic and cultural endeavors.”
Sports included in the competitions are, to name a few, bowling, tennis, softball, rugby, golf, swimming, dancing, sport climbing, bouldering and “Survivor” style events. Tejada stresses that there are also numerous opportunities for non-athletes to participate. With thousands descending on the city there will be evening festivities planned around town, and TSL is also encouraging visitors to check out local nightlife. “I think people will be pleasantly surprised by the walkable Grove area. Many cities don’t have a ‘gayborhood’ and if they do it’s not as impressive,” Tejada says. Landing these games was an exercise in civic cooperation resulting in a major coup for the city and region. Now it’s up to the rest of us to do our part by participating, hosting, and buying sponsorships. St. Louis, with Alice Tejada in the lead, was willing to work harder and faster than the competition to pull this off, which sounds like a solid game plan for success going forward. V

A NEW CYCLE
National Bike Month text KARLA TEMPELTON art MELANIE LAYER
When I was a kid, my bicycle was my most prized possession. It was a creation that, in my eyes, my semi-pro BMX biker brother had built for me. It was brilliant, pink and black, missing parts and rusted in all the right places. He had taken tons of parts from my “girl” bike to lighten his bike up, so that he could maneuver jumps over amazing heights like the family garden. I admired my brother; no one was cooler. My hodgepodge bike made up of recycled parts, the frankenstein creation of my brother, lasted me for years. I miss that bike. With my respect and adoration for bikes having started at a young age, it has been brought back to the surface for many reasons: the importance, the benefits and the overall awesomeness that bicycling involves. Organizations all over the world are encouraging the education of the benefits of bicycling and how important it is to society as a whole. May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. It was established in 1956 and is celebrated from coast to coast. This month is about education, policy, safety, and to showcase the many amazing benefits of cycling in order to encourage more and more each year to give it a green light. Here in STL we are working to move toward a bicycle-supported urban existence. Shops are popping up all over town and an entire underbelly of the city shows up for events all year long. We have bars created in the image of the all mighty power of the two wheels and a sub culture that not only boasts it, but lives and breathe it. It’s National Bike Month, and we have decided to check out the up and up of what’s going on. I am going to brush up on what I have been missing, outside of the annual Naked Bike Ride, of course. In Kansas City, they are one huge step ahead of us (barely, but who keeps count: Cards/Royals much?) Anyway, KC: you guys have got it together. The bike-share program they have rolling through the neighborhoods is showing promising growth and sustainability in many areas.
32
May 2015
Taking a look into the statistics posted on the 2013 annual report shows exactly what is happening: 5,166 bikes were rented at the convenient kiosks 2,120 passes were sold 18,508 miles were ridden 17,583 lbs of carbon offset was achieved 740,329 calories were collectively burned 90 bicycles 12 stations 134 docks to rent KC boasts that it is designed for short trips by residents, employees and visitors. Bike Share KC has been plugging out the success stories in the Midwest, and St. Louis is paying attention. We are in the beginning phase here- focusing first on downtown. While commuter stations throughout this city are not yet a reality, companies Trailnet, Great Rivers Greenway and Urban Shark have been working tirelessly to make bike sharing in STL a reality much like KC and many other cities. To participate currently, a membership must be purchased. Individual and Corporate memberships are available, $150 per year, $20 per month and even $5 per day, pending completion of an application and acceptance of the rules and regulations of the organizations involved (pick up, operating hours, etc). Trailnet and Great Rivers Greenway have been developing the phases and collecting data to make this dream a possibility. Trailnet was founded in 1988 to promote the preservation of the St. Louis Riverfront Trail, the city’s longest multi-use recreational trail. This project led the way for all local trail building throughout the city and surrounding areas: Grant’s Trail, St. Louis Riverfront, West Alton Trail, Ted Jones Trail, Glen Carbon Trail Extension and MetroBike Link to name a few. Trailnet has some major success stories under their belt: Leading the accommodation to cyclists and pedestrians on the Old Chain of Rocks and Eads Bridges is the restoration of the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which was a multi-million dollar project resulting in part of the historic Route 66 being converted into one of the world’s longest pedestrian and bicycle bridges. Trailnet owned the rights to this, and transferred the lease to the Great Rivers Greenway District in January of 2015. Great Rivers Greenway is working toward building the River Ring, an
interconnected system of greenways and trails that will encircle the STL area and, in time, connect the entire metro area. More than 100 miles of greenway trail have been developed to date, made possible by these two organizations. In a sign of true progress, Great Rivers Greenway recently released a 116 page comprehensive report outlining a two-year roll out of 60 stations with 540 bikes, with 30 additional station and 250 bikes to follow. The phases of development target the Downtown to Delmar Loop area. Phase Two boasts expansions to include the near south and near north sides, including downtown Clayton. Phase Three goes even further north and south, following the MetroLink Blue Line into St. Louis County. This venture would cost in the millions to implement, but feasibly anticipates 217,000 bike trips used by the new system in just its first year of operation. Back in Kansas City, Bike Walk KC, a member-supported organization that works toward promoting the same vision: a healthy, safe and accessible outdoor experience for everyone, offers educational programs to give residents and visitors the knowledge and skills to walk and bike safely. Stand Out in Your Work Out There are a few challenges when it comes to working out: finding time, eating healthy and an overall appealing presence. If it wasn’t enough being accompanied by sweat and sore limbs, you had to wear that hideous halter-top. In 2014, the sales of leggings and yoga pants went up, while denim sales went down. It seems as though that fitness gear is already in. Besides the yoga pants, what about that matching accessory that will complement your running shorts? That Apple Watch offers reversible bands that can blend well with your colorful sports bra. Whether it’s yoga pants or headphones, if you’re looking to relocate your threads from the gyms to the streets in a style-approving manner we’ve got some tips that will help with your new strength training program this sweaty summer. Besides the fun of fabrics, the fun of the workout comes from the cute accessories. The lines of fitness and fashion can very blurry, but only if you allow it to be. You don’t have to sacrifice fashion for the sake of sweat, there’s plenty of designer bags and wearable technology to go around. This summer, add some satin headbands to spice up your sleek bun and Oakley sunglasses to see pass the sun when you’re out for your run. Don’t take a drink from the fountain, get yourself a whimsy water bottle that waves with excitement. The accessory is just as appealing as the attire you choose. If you’re looking for bass booming headphones that are sweat proof and that aren’t Beats, look out for the iSport. This pair of wireless headphones is as light as they come with an adrenaline charged performance. If you want something to track your workout, you should pre-order yourself an Apple Watch. This gadget can calculate the steps you take, your heart rate and much more. The most important accessory you’ll need for those quick changes is a duffle bag that handles your work ensemble. Screw the backpack this year and get yourself a cool, durable bag that can handle all of your tools! We’ve put together a few stylish must-haves to hit the gym or outdoors with confidence and motivation to stay active this summer.V

text JIMMY NO SHOW art FOUR SEASONS ST. LOUIS
Rub Me The Right Way: My First Time My name is Jimmy No Show and I am — well, was — a massage virgin. The thought of going to a spa for a massage always appealed to me, but seemed intimidating at the same time. When I heard that the Four Seasons Spa was offering a Pride St. Louis Spa Package that included a donation back to the organization, it sounded like the perfect excuse to finally surrender my v-card. For those who aren’t/weren’t massage virgins like myself, The Pride St. Louis Spa Package includes your choice between a massage or a classic facial (stop giggling). The Four Seasons Spa facility’s amenities include complimentary valet parking, relaxation lounges, 11 treatment rooms, one couples suite plus beautifully appointed locker rooms, whirlpools, steam rooms and access to the fitness center. I skipped out on that last one. It’s all about relaxing, right? Upon arriving at reception they inquired about my preferred massage pressure, which ranged from gentle to deep (seriously, stop giggling). I took a note from Goldilocks and went for the middle of the road – which ended up being just right. The friendly attendant greeted me in the locker room with the world’s largest bathrobe and a pair of slippers that mysteriously made it home with me. After slipping into the robe and my new house slippers, I was met outside the locker room by my personal masseuse. My masseuse could not have been friendlier. After disclosing I was a massage virgin she walked me through what I would be experiencing and should expect. The private massage room was softly lit with flickering candles — unscented, so as not to compete with the lotions — and gentle music filled the room without dominating your attention. The massage bed was heated, making it that much easier to melt into. It would be an understatement to say that they nailed the element of ambiance. After the massage, you’re led to a relaxation lounge overlooking the Mississippi River and Illinois countryside. The spa attendant brought a Pearl Cucumber & soda at my request to enjoy, topped off with cucumber infused ice cubes. At this point, I feel like they’re just showing off. Slipping into a nap on their plush lounge chairs was effortless after the relaxing massage.

When I finally came back around, I headed over to the sauna to sweat off the alcohol. I was surprised to find a hint of eucalyptus in the steam. It was refreshing and certainly helped cut the heat. Then it was into the spa to help get my blood flowing again: It was time to wake up and return to the real world. Before my visit I read online that the Four Seasons St. Louis described their spa as “an urban oasis of tranquility.” After the hours of mind-numbing, out of body, ‘Is this real life?’ relaxation that I experienced and then being shaken into the fact that I was still in St.Louis and had to go back to work —I can confirm: urban oasis of tranquility. Four Seasons St. Louis offers 50 or 80 minute sessions. In hindsight, I should have sprung for the extra 30 minutes. Just like your first time: it never lasts as long as you want, but you can’t wait to do it again. V.

Kansas City FrontrunnerS
Kansas City Frontrunners is part of a world-wide network of gay and lesbian Frontrunners running and walking clubs. The name “Frontrunners” was inspired by Patricia Nell Warren’s novel The Front Runner, a story about the relationship between an ex-Marine track coach and his Olympic athlete training for the 1976 Olympic Games. The Kansas City club has been in existence since the early 1980s. Their mission is to promote good health through running, walking and club events in a supportive, LGBT running/walking community. Some members participate to get in a good jog a couple of times a week, while others show up to train for a competitive event. Some of the Frontrunners really show up because they like the social aspect of the group. The membership at KC Frontrunners is a diverse group that fosters acceptance and openness. People get involved with the Frontrunners for several reasons, be it member outreach, joining a friend or being able to meet new people in a different way. “I liked the concept of [KC Frontrunners] because it provided a social avenue of meeting some great friends outside of a bar setting,” says Brent Husher, KC Frontrunner.

May 2015
“It has helped me gain a solid group of friends of diverse ages and backgrounds. Seriously, I’ve met such great people and I credit this organization.” “I live and work in the suburbs, where the LGBT community isn’t as visible or accessible,” says Jon Kelley, KC Frontrunner. “So I really appreciate the opportunities to meet people I wouldn’t ordinarily encounter. By being able to get out of the stressful and often judgmental scene of the bar setting and do something active and healthy with other LGBT individuals, you are able to bond with each other on a different level, lasting in great relationships. I’m kind of an introvert and I don’t go to bars much because the scene just doesn’t have much I’m interested in,” says Benjamin Skidmore, KC Frontrunner. It’s hard to meet other people like one’s self without a place or an activity with a positive agenda. KC Frontrunners is that for me.” And whether you like to run or just walk, there is something for both types. It doesn’t really matter what you do with the Frontrunners, it’s more of being actively involved and bringing a sense of individuality that makes you a part of the team. “There are many differences
between each type of participant, that’s what makes us so fun!” says Kevin Hill, KC Frontrunner. “We come from all walks of life, many parts of the states and world and we are all gay or gay friendly.” Keep in mind, Frontrunners is for everyone, whether you are wanting a hard workout or a casual exercise routine. “I think some of the runners are really competitive about it, whereas the walkers are more casual,” says Benjamin Skidmore, KC Frontrunner. “I am by no means a great (or even good) runner, but I like being driven to try harder. Before joining Frontrunners, I only ran occasionally (like if I couldn’t make it to the gym on a particular day), but since joining, I’ve shaved 4+ minutes off the 5k route I run when I run alone.” Besides just running and walking, the group likes to get together for social events outside of their usual meeting. The guys will get together for dinner parties, movies, other sport activities. They even plan trips in the past, even a Caribbean Cruise. “Running and walking is just the beginning,” says Jon Kelley, KC Frontrunner. “Afterward, the majority of us go out for a meal together, and getting to know each other over meals is one of the big reasons I think this group is so successful. Also, hardly a week goes by without a birthday, pool party, potluck float trip, or picnic. ,
Run It. Walk It. Front It. It doesn’t matter who you are“ or what your sexual orientation, fitness is for everyone. While the majority of the KC Frontrunners are part of the LGBT community, the group accepts everyone.” Tim Gee and other members do an outstanding job of making sure there are plenty of opportunities to hang out. You could say we’re really a social group that just happens to also enjoy running and walking.” It doesn’t matter who you are or what your sexual orientation, fitness is for everyone. While the majority of the KC Frontrunners are part of the LGBT community, the group accepts everyone. They provide an approachable outlet for those who just want to get out a little bit and socialize, and take their health and wellness to a better level.“I’m not a competitive runner - I’m just not built for it - so I don’t have specific training goals, per se,” says Benjamin Skidmore, KC Frontrunners member. “But everything about it - the exercise, the camaraderie, the current events (beyond running), and even just quietly showing our presence in the city - it’s all positive and I’m proud to be a part of it.” The guys encourage and challenge each other in a positive way. You can easily go to the gym anytime, put on headphones and tune out he rest of the world. And while that can be seen as an efficient workout for many, to the Frontrunners, there’s something more rewarding by doing it in this way. “Especially among gay men, there is immense pressure to be physically fit,” says Jon Kelley, KC Frontrunner. “While this can lead to unrealistic standards, it can also lead us to the many benefits of exercise. It’s addictive once you get started, and it’s much easier to begin when you’re in a supportive group like the Frontrunners.”So why get involved? Exercise, engagement and empowerment are reasons enough to do so. The group also provides an outlet for sharing common views and occasional mentoring. It’s an overall sense of belonging
Get involved and active this summer and join the KC Frontrunners on one of their walks/runs. They meet twice a week on Wednesday evenings on the west side of Jacob Loose Park in front of the tennis courts at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. at locations which rotate around the metropolitan area. For more information on the Frontrunners and how you can get involved with them, check them out on Facebook or at Frontrunners.com. V
“I’m in better running shape, I know more quality people, I get to feel involved, and it ties me a little closer to the City,” says Benjamin Skidmore, KC Frontrunner. “I relocated to Kansas City a couple years ago; KC frontrunners makes it feel more like home.”

If you came here for advice on health and wellness, you’ve made a horribly bad choice. If, however, you came here for tips and tricks on how to score hot ass at your local gym, then Momma has a lot to share with you.. Text: Penelope Wigstock
1. The hotter the guy, the harder he works out. So naturally, he is exhausted and at his most vulnerable when he arrives in the locker room. How does one take advantage of this scenario? Wait for him to strip down and head toward the shower area, and then spring into action. Pretend to have a muscle spasm in the space next to him, and when he leans in to help, “lean in” and grab it. A few tight tugs lets him know you mean business. Even if you’ve got the face of a plaintiff on Judge Judy, chances are he’s too tired to resist. 2. If you crave hardcore back-door action, learn how to do anus kegels. Tighten up those ass muscles by picking up an olive off the floor and holding it using only the clenching power of your ass cheeks—before you know it, you’ll be the #1 power bottom of the YMCA and horny tops will line up around the block for it. 3. Invest in some suction cups that will allow you to scale the walls of the locker room. I once hid out in a crawlspace for hours until the stud I wanted was the only one left in the locker room. I swooped down without warning and gave him the hummer of his life. So what if he reported me for assault and battery- It was more than worth it. 4. Never be shy in the sauna. If you think someone’s cruising you, he is! If there’s an unwanted third person who’s ugly, make Butta-Face be the look-out while you rub one out with your new friend. It’s a win-win for everyone. 5. Even if you’re only “bench pressing” 25 pounds, always ask for a “spotter.” While they hover over you, utilize the angle to your advantage—get that tongue right up inside their shorts and let them experience the magic. I’ve only been kicked out of three gyms for this and have had memberships at five, so do the math! Step up your game, bitches—and may the odds be forever in your favor! See you next season on “The Hungry Hole Games.” V

Kelsey Templeton Kelsey has been working at Mango for two years now. Her favorite nights at work are during our fundraising events for charities here in St. Louis, where the owners and the staff come together in support of local organizations they are most passionate about. “The buzz that it creates in the room is inspiring,” Kelsey says, “and it really brings us closer together as a work family.” Education is hands down the best part of Kelsey’s job. “I get to play and learn about new food, new drinks, new techniques every day,” she explains. “I also get to educate guests about Peruvian culture and cuisine. It’s a blast to see the look on someone’s face when they take their first sip or first bite - like some great revelation just happened for their taste buds.” And don’t be afraid to ask her for something special. “While it probably makes bartenders everywhere cringe, I actually love our muddled drinks,” she says. “Our cocktails are all handcrafted, take a bit of time and muscle, but they’re worth it.” After an exciting night at Mango, Kelsey prefers something more low-key. “Since my “9-5” is a busy night downtown, I typically retreat to a small dive bar near home with the wife,” she says. “If we’re feeling crazy, a Scandal marathon!”
Mango The atmosphere at Mango is warm and inviting. Providing one of the most unique fusion cuisines in the world, they want guests to feel their menu is approachable while allowing you to experiment and step out of your comfort zone. Their environment reflects that: unique, vibrant, fun, yet relaxing and comfortable. With their new Washington Avenue location, they have the opportunity to expand their sidewalk patio and their private event space. The private room, which seats 100+ guests, is available for complete rental. It features a full bar and gorgeous floor to ceiling windows facing Washington. For general inquiries on the restaurant, call 314.621.9993. For inquiries on private dining room options, contact Kelsey directly at kelsey@mangoperu.com. V
