PUBLISHER LETTER

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, SHOULD YOU? Welcome to our annual LGBT Wedding Issue. It is with pride and excitement that finally we can all legally get married now. Three years ago when we first published our LGBT Wedding Issue, legal marriage was only a hope and a dream. Today, we are seeing a flood of committed couples jumping the broom to be able to live their own truth. From an economic perspective, we as a community are seeing many new companies reach out to us to share and support in our special day.

Let’s face it, his confections are to die for and he’s not too hard on the eyes.

In this year’s Wedding Guide we have tried to present a variety of local and regional companies that are ready to stand up with you and provide you with the best quality of service. Each year we try to expand and grow the Wedding Guide so that you will be in the know of who will be there for you as you begin your new lives together.

We also want to remind all of our community that just because you now can get married, should you? Marriage does not guarantee you will be together forever, it’s only a legal document. It takes love, respect, trust, understanding, friendship and faith in your relationship to make it last. V

We were excited to chat with Yigit Pura from Top Chef: Just Desserts to garner you some fresh new ideas on selecting the perfect wedding cake or dessert to spice up your event.

This month we also are excited to introduce two new writers to the Vital VOICE roster: Kaleigh Jurgensmeyer, who interviewed Robert Verdi on how to get that runway look to strut down the isle. Also, Tyler Bierman gives us some fresh ideas on today’s modern Bachelor/ Bachelorette parties.

WEDDING GUIDE MARTA PAPA consideringdivorce.com | 7101 Delmar Blvd. University City, MO 63130 | (314) 862-0202 Now that we have won the long-fought battle to be able to “officially” marry, Vital VOICE asked St. Louis Family Law Attorney, Marta J. Papa, how does this change anything other than our commitment to each other? Marta is an expert on the subject, and she explains how, yes, it does significantly change some of your rights and responsibilities toward each other. Probably the most important changes involve rights around property and health care issues. Check out the list below for all of Marta’s tips.

PROPERTY TIPS

• You can transfer property (including money) to your spouse without any gift or estate tax. • You have the right to inherit from your spouse, should something happen to them. This eliminates the nightmare of your partner’s family swooping in and claiming rights to your partner’s assets. • You each begin “joint ownership” of everything you purchase or acquire after the marriage. For instance, you each own 50% of all the money you earn after you marry, or anything you buy. • Likewise, you each begin joint ownership of everything you save after marrying. So you each begin a 50 percent ownership of each others’ retirement, 401(k), IRA, etc. It is all considered “marital property.” • You also begin joint ownership of your home and any other real estate you purchase after the marriage.

HEALTH TIPS

• You can cover your spouse as a dependent on your health insurance policy. • You have the right to visit and get information about your spouse, if he or she is in the hospital. You are now considered a family member. • You have the right to make medical decisions concerning your partner, which supersedes his or her biological family’s decision. • You also have the option to make final arrangements for your partner.

18

November 2015

MARTA’S TIPS “I’ll end with mentioning your right to file joint tax returns, both in the State and Federal system,” Marta says. “The inability to file joint Federal tax returns has been a big inconvenience for many married same-sex couples, so we are glad that issue has been resolved.” Marta’s law firm is hosting a “LBGT Happy Hour” on Monday, November 16, 2015 at Sub Zero Vodka Bar from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to share more information about your rights as a married couple and answer all your questions. Space is limited so reserve your spot today

by calling 314-862-0202. The cost is $25 per person.

K

it Williamson and John Halbach may not play lovers on the LGBT web series, Eastsiders, but they are more than inseparable off screen. In fact, they are engaged to be married. When Williamson and Halbach first met on March 11, 2007, it was truly love at first sight; a magical day they will never forget. “I was bartending at a theatre district hang out in New York, and Kit was in a show on Broadway with my friend Christy Pusz,” Halbach says. “They had a party at the bar where I was working, and Kit and I made some enchanted evening eye contact with each other from across the crowded room. Christy picked up on this and she came up to both of us individually and said, ‘You know, Kit’s single and not crazy,’ and ‘John’s single and not crazy,’ and just walked away and left it at that. We ended up chatting and he ended up staying the whole night while I counted out my drawer and closed down the bar. We’ve been together ever since.” News of the couple’s engagement was announced this past April, and they are shooting for the wedding date to be February of next year in Palm Springs. Vital VOICE caught up with the duo to chat about their engagement and wedding plans, in addition to the success and working together on Eastsiders, which can be streamed through Logo TV’s website. In short, the show is a dark comedy about a gay couple living in Silver Lake (LA) trying to stay together through infidelity, substance abuse and double standards. The show is currently in its second season So Kit, what was your inspiration for the show? KW: I was really inspired by the neighborhood and the lives of a lot of my friends and wanted to see broad, messed up characters that just so happen to be gay; potentially their own stories. How has the second season been going so far? JH: This season has been a long time coming. We’ve been working on it for about a year and a half now and we’ve had so many people helping us along the way. From our crew to our cast, it’s been really gratifying to finally get it out there and have people see it and to see them responding and supporting it. Is this the first show you two have worked on together? KW: Actually, no. We had produced a short film together that never saw the light of day and never will [laughs]. John has always been really supportive of all the projects that I’ve tried to get off the ground and failed to. This is definitely the first one we’ve seen through to a successful release like this.

What direction do you hope to see the show headed in? KW: Gosh, I don’t know. We’re just taking it one step at a time and trying to get through the release of season two. We come out on other digital platforms and DVD in November, so we’ll reassess to see if it won’t destroy our relationship to do another season. JH: There was such growth between season one and two, I can’t help but think that if we got to make another season, there would be more leaps and bounds made. The quality and places would get to take the show would be really exciting. It would be awesome to make more. Let’s move on to your engagement – Who proposed to whom and how did it happen? KW: John proposed to me. It was my first day moving back to New York. He had come a few months earlier to start a job out here and I came and met him and it was snowing outside and he met me at the door with champagne. I came upstairs and the whole apartment was filled with candles and a light up sign that said, “Will you marry me?” I said yes and screamed a bunch. When was the moment you realized you loved each other? JH: I think for me it was the first time he really spent time with my family. We’ve been dating for a couple of months and I was doing the show Summer Stock in Long Island, and my parents and sister came out to see it and he was there that weekend. That was really the first time he was with my family and I think that was the weekend I really fell in love. KW: Yea, for me it was the same. It was kind of like in the aftershock of meeting the family and spending the weekend together. We were laying in bed at night and talking about the weekend, and I honestly can’t remember being that kind of happy and scared before. You always wanted the way you feel reciprocated. We both kind of mumbled some version of “I love you, I sort of love you, too,” and that was kind of that. What is your dream wedding? KW: Gosh, you know it’s funny, I never grew up picturing a wedding. I always grew up picturing a person and no matter what our wedding is, it will be my dream wedding because I’ve fallen in love with my dream guy. What is one thing that every same sex wedding should have?

JH: We also acted in a production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream together the first year we met. I played Francis Flute and he was the Wall [laughs].

JH: Two people who love each other is always good. I also think every wedding should have a good photographer. If there aren’t photos, it didn’t happen.

Kit, you cast John as a straight character. Why didn’t you cast him as your boyfriend?

And what is one thing that every same sex wedding should never have?

KW: I thought that people would assume the story was autobiographical if we played each other’s boyfriend. I also think that the character, Ian, is perfect for John and I wrote it with him in mind. I’m sure he could play Thom because he’s a wonderful actor, but I always wanted to see him play the nice guy who has his hands full with his girlfriend.

KW: I would say, there’s this pressure or obligation to be anything other than a commitment ceremony between two people. You know, it’s for the people getting married, an opportunity for them to come together to share their love with their friends and family. I don’t think it needs to be anything other than that. Whatever it means to the couple is what it should be.

John, is it hard to play straight?

JH: Yea, I agree. I feel like so often times with weddings, you hear stories of parents and friends and bridesmaids and groomsmen taking thing over. It should be all about something great for your friends and family, but something the couple thinks is great too.

JH: [Laughs] There is a certain amount of weird pressure I feel, flashing back to middle school having fears that people would know that I was gay. There’s some small voice in my head that says that. Aside from that, it’s great playing straight.

November 2015

True or false? It all comes down to the wedding cake. The flowers may fade, the DJ may bomb, who knows, that crazy ex-boyfriend may publicly object to the entire thing. But as long as the food is good, the event is worth your while, right? Many would answer true, and pastry chef Yigit Pura would likely be one of them. In case you were confused, ‘Yigit’ rhymes with ‘sweet,’ and he’s a master at creating such things. After winning Top Chef: Just Desserts in 2010, Pura opened up his own patisserie in San Francisco, Tout Sweet. It features some on his most beloved treats that he shares with the world, each one special and unique in its own right. And with the success of his book, Sweet Alchemy, you’re able to bring those sought-after recipes into your own home. Whether you are looking for something tasty to add to your special day, or need tips to create the wedding cake that is utterly you, Yigit has an answer and recommendation for it all. When it comes to sweet treats, Yigit is ‘Pura’ genius.

hat big things do you have planned for the upcoming holiday season? I try to live week-to-week. As a business owner, you have to be organic because opportunities constantly come, things always grow, and so we take it one day at a time. Holidays are usually very, very busy for us. People are always celebrating, and thankfully, fall and winter are times when people really embrace eating sweets (I embrace it year-round personally). So basically from November 1 to the end of the year, my staff knows it’s time to buckle down and work hard.

Being the winner of Top Chef: Just Desserts clearly affect your career in a positive way? Would you ever do a reality show again? No. It was definitely and amazing experience, and I never even applied to be on the show. Ironically, I’ve never owned a television in my adult life, and I still don’t. I did [Top Chef] because not only was it a good opportunity, but it was a huge challenge for me professionally. It was a personal and mental challenge too. It’s one of those things that, I did it, it was fun, it was challenging; I came out on top – literally – and it’s checked off the bucket list.

What does your dream wedding look like? Fifteen of my closest people, fifteen of his closest people, in some nice, deserted beach in Maui, with my dog, Maui, and something that’s really simple, delicious and just elegant. Something that’s not fluffy or over-the-top. Just something that really celebrates two people; I think that’s what it should really be about. When it comes to weddings, do you see any current trends with Wedding cakes?

You’re known as quirky, fun and crazy. How does this translate in the kitchen and in your desserts?

People are definitely into the ombre cakes, where there is this succession of color throughout the What are your thoughts of other baking shows? cake. I think it’s beautiful, but I always encourage people to not follow trends. If you’ve been around I do watch some cooking shows, but there for 20 plus years then you probably have your are parts of [them] that kind of disappoint own taste, so really do what makes you happy. and aggravate me sometimes. I do think that television is a huge part of peoples lives now, and I do enjoy doing television and have done it since What is your personal favorite type of cake? [Top Chef]. But as far as reality shows, while it’s fun to make a show that gets people involved and Gosh, that’s a really hard one to pick. Seasonally, thinking, I think sometimes, because of the need when it comes to summer I just crave fruitcakes, of networks, people sacrifice some professional cakes with peaches or strawberries. And in fall quality for drama, and that is something I have a time, I definitely lean toward heavier kinds like problem with. caramels and chocolates, because fruit is not so abundant. And during wintertime I go for With your book, Sweet Alchemy, were you super cozy things that are very rich and creamy worried about giving away some of your choice and fatty. But I think that’s also how your body secrets? responds to the season, so that’s how my taste palette goes. Not at all. One of my first chefs used to tell me (because I used to ask her the same question) How do you stay in shape by being surrounded and she said that the original recipe is like the by so many sweets? original sin: there are people who can date back to it, but no one really knows and at this point, I’ll put it to you this way: a friend of mine works no one really cares. So to me, did I invent the for Jawbone, and last fall season she gave me one French macaroon? No. Do I like to think that I of their fitness bands. I was reporting it with my do an excellent job at it? I’d like to think so. And staff and over the month of December, which is when it comes to my kids, when they work with obviously our busiest month, it said something me, whether for a year or two or three years, I tell that I walked on average somewhere between 13 them that whatever they make with me is theirs and 16 miles in the kitchen, just being at work. It to take. That’s a part of this “culinary heritage” definitely keeps me on my toes. I think – you have to teach the next generation how to be great chefs, not just through recipes You know they say to never trust a skinny chef. but also through technique and good, hard work How do you respond? ethic. I don’t think recipes should be hoarded, they should be shared. Well, Kate Moss also said “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” She doesn’t know jack shit, and You were clearly a catch on Millionaire people shouldn’t assume anything. Matchmaker. How has your dating life been since then? What’s your favorite junk food?

I’ll tell you when I hire a new staff, whether it’s someone that I am mentoring, a sous chef or at any level, what I tell everyone is we have a lot of fun in my kitchen. For creative people, it is important to work in an environment that is comfortable and inviting, otherwise you get stifled. So in my place, it was important to create a place where people can flourish. I always tell my staff that, when someone comes in, it doesn’t matter if you’re cooking for one person or a thousand people, our commitment to making each bite [perfect] is still the same, and that’s important.

On pause – let’s put it that way. I’m kind of in a place right now where [my business] is really what I want to focus on. Now, if the perfect man of my dreams came along, certainly I would be open to it. I think being on this planet 35 cycles around the sun, I’m definitely more in tune with myself and who I am and what I want, so certainly if that came along I would be open to it. I think, just like everyone else, I’m not the type of person who goes out looking for love or looking for that perfect person. Thankfully, I’m blessed with a lot of awesome people in my life, and with people that keep me on my toes.

When and how did you know that you wanted to bake and create desserts? Since I was about four years old. My mom was a great baker and was always in the kitchen making candies and desserts and cakes and things, and I was constantly following her like a little rug rat, begging to lick the bottom of the bowl. But my mom was very traditionally Turkish, so she thought that boys shouldn’t be bakers; she thought it was a woman’s profession. But, being a gay man, when someone tells you that you can’t do something, you go and do it twice a well, right? Tell us about Tout Sweet Patisserie. What makes that place home for you? Besides the fact that I spend about 16 hours a day here? This is something that I’ve always wanted to do since I started doing pastry at age 19. You definitely get molded by the people who mentor you. Having worked at placed like Daniel and The Four Seasons in New York, both very high-caliber kitchens, and also being a California guy at heart, I really wanted to marry French technique and high-caliber food, and really make it fun. I think that we forget sometimes that eating is supposed to be fun. The fact that people go out to eat is because they want to have fun. To me, as a chef, my job is to create really innovative and delicious food that people can relate to.

Oh god, I love junk food. And you know, every great chef that I know has their own specific group of junk food that they binge out on. It’s kind of like therapy, actually. After creating really elaborate foods you just want your brain to shut off. One of my favorite junk food combos is a big bag of almond M&Ms and a really good beer. That could be my dinner for like two days out of the week; it’s just lovely.V

The destination, the dress, the dynamic duo Ashley Kendrick and Sarah Bolinger were married this past summer on June 6 at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The couple wanted a destination wedding that still wasn’t too far for their 350 guests to travel to. The Ozark hills have a very mountain like feel to them, which was very important to the pair. It was a spiritual place, and an atmosphere to fall in love with. At the time, the Supreme Court ruling hadn’t happened yet (The couple finally went the courthouse in Kansas City back in September to file the documents and make it official). “We’ve been together for four years, and it already felt like we had been married,” Sarah says. “It’s something that is afforded to many Americans without having to fight for it, so given the fact that we did have to fight for it and for us makes it much more special.” Neither of them wanted to know what the other was wearing, yet each of them complimented one another by wearing their dream attire: Ashley wore a Tom Ford suit that she bought in Las Vegas, and Sarah was in a Sarah Seven gown, a Californian designer. The dress code wasn’t black tie per se, but being at such a fabulous venue as the Crescent, then went for the theme of classic, simple elegance. Ashley and Sarah are both spiritual individuals, so they wanted to incorporate all of the elements of fire, water, air and earth, represented by a unity tree in lieu of lighting candles. Also, stones were placed on the chairs of the guests as they were seated, and there was a one-minute meditation at the beginning of the ceremony for guests to put positive intentions for the couple and their marriage out into the universe. The two of them now keep the stones in their house.

38

November 2015

As far as wedding details, Sarah is over-the-top by nature (Ashley is the complete opposite). One thing that stands out the most is the flowers, which was a very whimsical theme that carried itself through the ceremony. Sarah’s dad and herself built the arbor for which they stood under to say their vows, using wood from a cedar tree that they cut down from their home. Every element in the wedding was there for a purpose- fully intentional. That includes the receptions, which was nothing short of a nonstop dance party. For starters, Sarah ripped her dress from simply dancing her butt off . The two hired a rock and roll band that just “brought it.” At various points during the reception, the two were singing with the band, and at one point Sarah sang a song to Ashley – she learned to play a song on the guitar just for the reception. “The food and cake stuff was kind of cheesy,” Ashley says, “so we got through that really quickly because we wanted the music to be the center of the reception.” No regrets or changes from these two on their special day. And when it comes to tips for future couples, Sarah leaves these words of wisdom: “Once you get to that day, let go of all expectation and just have fun. How you are supposed to be, who you are supposed to be. Let go, and enjoy it. We totally did, and we had a blast.” V

Stag Night Survival Guide Here at the Vital VOICE we answer a lot of questions about same sex bachelor/bachelorette parties - questions from guests, hosts and even from brides and grooms themselves. Now that it’s once again time for our annual Wedding Issue, we would like to take a moment to answer a few of the most common questions that we hear. Together or Separate? “Should my fiancé and I have separate bachelor parties?” It's a tricky question. The real answer—and the most exciting part—is that there is no right answer. Why should there be? There's no need to subscribe to the old and outdated ideas that bachelor parties were built on. It's entirely up to you and your partner to decide which option is right for both of you. What Else Can We Do? So, don’t just do The Hangover thing if that’s not you. Get creative and come up with something you and your friends have always loved doing. The sky’s the limit. Here are just a few of our favorite examples of alternative bachelor/ bachelorette party ideas: Get Active: Turn around and literally run away from the traditional bachelor/ bachelorette party. Instead of bogging down your body with smoke and liquor, go outside and partake in a healthy activity or sport that you all love. Bike rides, nature hikes, camping, rock climbing, skiing, tennis, baseball or even yoga to name a few. Get Out of Town: That’s right! We’re talking about a road trip. Round up your party and go somewhere new and exciting. You can try the local food, sample the native culture and breathe some new air. Marriage is an adventure, so why not kick it off with a little adventure of your own. Get Classy: Let’s face it, most of us don’t get a chance to partake in the finer things very often. Make this an occasion to splurge. Throw on your best suit or ball gown and head to some place extra fancy. Get Creative: Are there any artists out there? That’s a trick question. Everyone’s an artist. Take your party to an art studio and paint, sculpt, or craft keepsakes for the lucky couple. What it all boils down to is that there’s really not that much to answer about same sex bachelor and bachelorette parties. The only deciding factor is how you want to celebrate your previous, single life and usher in your life as a couple. V

STL & KC Hotspots

St. Louis Eclipse Rooftop Terrace Club: Come on down to the famous Delmar Loop and be dazzled by the stunning St. Louis skyline and fancy cocktails. ITAP: If beer is your thing, hit up the International Tap House in the Central West End. With more than 50 different beers on tap at all times this may just become your new go to. Lumiere Place Casino: Play a little Poker, drink a ton of drinks and then sleep it off at a Five Star suite.

Kansas City Howl at the Moon: Two words— dueling pianos. Come for the fantastic music and stay for the raucous atmosphere. Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club: Don’t carry for fancy clubs? Check out this KC staple for a down-to-Earth, good time. Living Room/KC Beer Garden: An outdoor bar with the largest outdoor viewing screen around.

BRIDES R

Gone Styled

obert Verdi is a man who wears many hats – and they might be the most stylish hats you’ve ever seen. He seamlessly transitions from fashion guru, interior designer and entertainer to television personality, coloring the world with his great taste, charm and wit.

“For your own wedding: go with your gut: bring your biggest fantasy to life that day. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s a big honor to yourself so don’t steer off to be on someone elses’ path.”

“I’m in an industry where people want you to do one thing,” Verdi says. “You have to be the home guy or the fashion guy. I’m the guy that has great taste and can pull it all together.” But it wasn’t until 1998 when his multi-faceted career truly came to fruition. In a fortunate stroke of serendipity, New York Times writer Marianne Rohrlich took interest in Verdi after attending Sarah Bernhard’s one-woman comedy show off Broadway, where she quipped and joked about the glamour and irony of her own life – which included her personal decorator and friend, Verdi. What was supposed to be a critique article about Bernhard’s show turned into a profile story about Verdi, the guy who obsessed over pillows, the guy who designed Sandra’s apartment, the guy who was about to be elevated into the mainstream, public eye. “My career was ignited,” Verdi says. “What if Sandra hadn’t talked about me in her show? What if that New York Times reporter hadn’t been there? It was almost fate.” Though Verdi credits Bernard, still one of his close friends, to kicking off his career, Verdi had already made a name for himself with his array of talents. Growing up with immigrant parents, Verdi explains that his mother and father had the opportunity to come to America not to better themselves— but to better their children’s lives. And, knowingly or not, his parents surrounded him with creativity. “They were always doing something – my dad was French and a chef, always cooking or making something, and my mom was always gardening, knitting, or making clothes for my sister,” Verdi remembers. “You know, that’s really how I got started in fashion. Helping my mom sew my sister’s clothes.” My guess is that his parents probably didn’t imagine their son rocketing to his own fame in fashion and television; although, it was clear that he would succeed in the artistic world. Since he was young, Verdi always had an inclination for beauty. In high school, he made his own jewelry and sold them on the streets of New York, eventually even starting his own line. He also attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for four years. So, whether you call it fate, destiny, luck or coincidence, one thing is certain: Verdi knows style. He’s worked with A-listers like Hugh Jackman, Eva Longoria and Bobby Flay; appeared on The View, The Today Show, and Live with Regis & Kelly; he’s and even hosted Fashion Police. In his new show Brides Gone Styled on TLC, Verdi masterfully mediates the wedding dress hunt for women who, well, need a little extra help.

Instead of a manager and assistant and publicist with a big mouth, you have a bride, sister, mother and mother-in-law that all want different things,” Verdi says. “I’m skilled at working with and navigating difficult people in superstars’ lives. I can certainly handle a woman who’s about to cross the altar.” The show starts through a nomination process. A friend, daughter, colleague or even a fiancé reaches out to the show because he or she feels that the future bride is about to make the biggest mistake of her life. The walk down the aisle could be the walk of shame if they don’t get help. And that’s where Verdi and his co-host Gretta Monahan come along. After reviewing the often extreme “vision” of the nominated bride, the duo curates better dress choices that reflect the woman’s dream and style, while also flattering her figure. After a full style makeover, the soon-to-be Mrs. makes her final dress choice, surprising the audience and hosts with her happily ever after gown – the final touch that brings her fantasy to life. As many brides know, the wedding process is not always easy. Verdi sees first-hand the push and pull many woman feel when picking out a dress and planning their special day. “We see this tug-of war with the people involved,” Verdi explains. “There’s always a sort of pressure and tension that we feel from them. We are—Greta and I—are coaches and referees. We have to defend our grounds and motivate, but at the same time we’re blocking and calling fallible shots when we see them. It’s the same role as a therapist. For your own wedding: go with your gut: bring your biggest fantasy to life that day. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s a big honor to yourself so don’t steer off to be on someone else’s’ path.”

TIPS FROM THE EXPERT:

The nuptial nightmares the show sees could scare even the most polished, seasoned stylists away. But not Verdi. He transforms the train wreck into something magical.

GUYS: Bring an extra shirt. You’re gonna sweat. So why not change midway through? Swap out your button-up before the reception to get a fresh moment.

LADIES: Don’t force your bridesmaids to dress the same. We all have different bodies, so pick out a couple styles you like and let your friends pick the dress from there. And try to make it something they can wear again, please.

As Verdi explains, everyone has a dream or fantasy they’d love to live out. But, news flash: we can’t all be Beyoncé. “I’m a stylist and I’m there for a celeb’s huge red carpet event – a dress for the Oscars, Golden Globes, the Grammys, but the reality is that we don’t have millions of people nominated for best lead actress in a sitcom,” Verdi says. “But millions of people do get married. And that’s a red carpet moment.” Unfortunately, not everyone has a professional stylist like Verdi to go shopping with them for one of the biggest days of their life. So how can you make your own red-carpet moment come to life? Firstly, don’t forget to laugh. Weddings are supposed to be fun.

“You get tangled up financially, emotionally and sexually – you just have to laugh at the insanity of the whole process” Verdi explains. Secondly, know what’s important to you and budget around that. Skimping on flowers might be horrifying to some, but for others, it’s the food that’s most important. Thirdly, choose the style of the event and then let that dictate the style of your attire. You don’t, for example, wear a black ball gown to the beach. The venue needs to match the dress and vice versa. Leave the costumes at home. Most importantly, however, is bringing your full fantasy to life that is 100 percent, perfectly, authentically you. “Whatever that thing is that makes you you, do that,” Verdi says. “Because maybe you’re uncomfortable in heels, or you’re a trouser person, or don’t want to wear a full-length dress. There are no rules. It’s whatever works for the individual and their unique style. Marriage is a rite of passage. Celebrate that.” V text KALEIGH JURGENSMEYER art FIDEL BERISHA

The Tesla 2 oz Pearl Vodka Three Muddled Fresh Strawberries

Dave Welsh Working Dave’s favorite night to work at The Monocle is Thursday, where Ron Bryant and Amy Armstrong make it a joy to work behind the bar. “Their fun, yet sometimes poignant and heartfelt performances start at 9 p.m. and go until midnight,” he says. “Also the crowd is engulfed in the energy and you can just feel the magic behind the bar.”

Three Fresh Basil Leaves Muddled .75 oz Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

.75 oz Buzz Button infused House made simple syrup. The Tesla is one of the more popular craft cocktails at The Monocle. While it is a delicious drink by itself, the bar staff loves to experience everyone’s reaction to the “Buzz Button” that comes along side of the drink. It’s what makes the cocktail not only fun to make, but fun to watch.

Meeting new people, and making new friends and relationships are the best parts of Dave’s job. “It is hard to even say ‘friends,’” he says, “as everyone that comes into the Monocle feels more like family.” Furthermore, the entire team tirelessly worked endless early mornings and late nights to put every detail into place before they opened, and in building something special that they are exceptionally proud of, they look out for each other in the way family members do.

The monocle As the newest spectacle in The Grove, The Monocle is very elegant, yet still feels like home. They pride themselves on a “Cheers” like atmosphere, and get to know their customers personally. “We like to know their name and how their day has been,” Dave says. “The crowds cover every demographic and age, 21 and up of course, but you see a little bit of every age.” This is a place to come with a date, friends, family or anyone you want to really spend quality time with. You can actually carry on a conversation, watch an amazing show or sing along at one of our wonderful themed nights. It’s heavy on concept and rich in experience, all the while sparing no expense on a wellexecuted cocktail, with a commitment to above par entertainment and lavish interiors. It is a place with substance, swagger and that little something special. thevitalVOICE.com
