IN THE GROVE

Within the past 5 years, we’ve

witnessed The Grove literally come to life. The additions of several restaurants, bars, local businesses and a concert venue have all added to the charm and overall diversification of St. Louis’s “gayborhood.” IKEA has now opened down the street, and with an impending mega structure located next to the new Commerce Bank expected to consist of a brand new retail and apartment complex, it’s clear that our ‘hood is on the rise. 10

October 2015

Despite this, it’s not uncommon to witness the opening and closing of many establishments in times of such gentrification. Over the past few years, our community lost several favored LGBT hangouts: from Clementine’s to Novak’s, all in a short time. However, in some cases, the real estate is prime and inspired; so the cycle begins again with a new haunt about to become the place to be. The latest being a cabaret themed, speakeasy inspired, craft cocktail bar coined The Monocle, located at 4510 Manchester (formerly Meyer’s Grove & Nancy’s Place). “The Monocle is pleased to offer a very specific bar experience,” General Manager Harrison Roberts says. “From our ultrafresh cocktail ingredients to our carefully cultivated roster of performers, we hope to give The Grove and the city of Saint Louis something they’ve never experienced before in both a fun and stimulating environment.” With a cocktail menu developed by Ricky Bole of Chicago’s Elixir and Soho House, The Monocle offers a drink menu consisting of all fresh ingredients (including lemon and lime juice squeezed daily), vodka infusions done in-house, and all flavored syrups crafted by hand. It is clear that The Monocle’s strong concept places emphasis on the sophisticated experience of their patrons. Catering to a more cosmopolitan demographic, the chill lounge environment is perfect for intimate conversation. The owners collectively agreed early on that The Grove was lacking of a gentlemanly, mature, and contemporary place to post up. But do not mistake their modernity for minimalism. The Emerald Room is the glitzy theater and entertainment portion of the venue and is

a nod to the past; offering a carefully curated cast of performers with true and sincere vintage appeal. “There is a very intimate relationship that develops between the audience and the entertainer in this type of environment,” Kyle Hustedt, Grand Impressario and Entertainment Director of The Emerald Room, says. “Our broad array of stage acts and entertainers is sure to please!” You can grab a performance at seven, nine and 11 p.m. on weekends, making this prime location the perfect pit stop on an evening of debauchery, or perhaps a date night destination. The diverse range of talent features a cast that includes cabaret acts, vaudeville entertainers, burlesque artists and female impersonators; performers of all kinds, including national acts as well. To top it off, the acts will be hosted by The Emerald Room’s resident Diva, Amy Armstrong. “I do just about anything,” Armstrong says. “I’ve been performing for over twenty years in Chicago and cities the world over with my outstanding piano player Freddy Allen, and I’ve opened for Phyllis Diller, Jennifer Holiday and Leslie Jordan just to name a few. From singing to dancing to keeping people in stitches with my bawdy comedy, I enjoy seeing people smile and react when I’m on stage. My life is music and making people laugh, and I believe we have something truly special and unique here at The Emerald Room.” Managing Partner Michael Vollmer has assembled his best team, hand picking each and every staff member, because they are simply the best at what they do.

“Being able to bring The Monocle and The Emerald Room to St. Louis is about sharing with our community the very best of what I believe The Grove represents,” Vollmer says. “It’s about delivering on a commitment to excellence in everything that we do. Whether in hand-crafting the finest cocktails with the freshest ingredients, developing a space with consistency of theme and substance, or even producing entertainment that appeals to a broad audience and bringing national talent like Coco Peru and Leslie Jordan, we plan to deliver a stellar experience in everything that we do and create.” “From the moment you step foot into The Monocle, or take a stroll down the speakeasy walkway to The Emerald Room, you instantaneously know that you’re somewhere special,” Vollmer continues. “My hope is that The Monocle and The Emerald Room become a recognized destination for a vintage and classy experience that will have you consistently coming back for more.” Not only is this endeavor lofty, but it takes a high level of conviction, confidence and support to open this kind of venue in The Grove - something these owners and staff have in spades. What we can tell so far is: it’s heavy on concept and rich in experience, all the while sparing no expense on a well-executed cocktail, with a commitment to above par entertainment and lavish interiors. We welcome an experience that caters to the arts and has the gall to bring something new to the table - something with substance, swagger and distinctively special. Good Samaritan Project According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.2 million people aged 13 years and older are living with HIV in the United States. Approximately one in five youth (between the ages of 13 to 25) do not know that they are infected and can unknowingly pass the virus on to others. The statistics for individuals who are affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be overwhelming when you take the time to educate yourself on what appears to be a still taboo health concern. However, the Kansas City Good Samaritan Project is taking large leaps in community engagement and education with the hope of decreasing the numbers of those infected through various programs. This year marks the 30th year that the Good Samaritan Project (GSP) has been providing advocacy, care and education to individuals who are affected by HIV, AIDS and other STIs. That makes GSP the longest running, not-for-profit AIDS Service Organization in the area. GSP was originally founded in 1985 - near the beginning of the AIDS epidemic - by a group of volunteers who gathered in a church basement which served as a hospice. To date, GSP is Kansas City’s most comprehensive agency solely devoted to the care and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

“A lot of folks don’t realize that it is still a very prominent issue that affects the lives of so many [including] their partners and their families,” Halastik says. “I think there’s still a larger sect of the population, even those who are under the LGBTQ umbrella who need more education – who need to know medically accurate, age appropriate content that affects their lives from a sexual health stand point.” David Schlomer, Chief Executive Officer, spoke excitedly about the future undertakings of GSP, which will help the Kansas CIty community with HIV primary healthcare services. “The most exciting endeavor is our partnership with Truman Medical Center (TMC), which manages an on-site primary care clinic at GSP,” Schlomer says. “We have plans to serve not only the HIV/AIDS patients, but others as well. For instance, we want to host clinic days specifically for young people who are not yet engaged in care anywhere, to have events focusing on women’s health and perhaps to develop a PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) clinic.”

Creating a foundation of communication within the community is essential in helping individuals make informed decisions regarding their sexuality. GSP is reaching out to their eleven-county region to offer various ways to initiate this open dialogue by utilizing education and community outreach in order to prevent HIV and STI transmission. GSP offers services such as medical case management for more than 700 people living with HIV/AIDS, testing for HIV and STIs, emergency assistance for individuals living with HIV/AIDS as well as referrals for mental health and other social services. Mark Halastik, Director of Development and Communications, spoke passionately about the need for people in the community - and even around the United States – to become aware that HIV/AIDS is still a very important concern that should be taken into consideration.

October 2015

According to Schlomer, this new clinic will be an invaluable resource for their Prevention Team, and the partnership will allow them to provide better care for their patients. They also hope to expand their testing efforts in the future (which currently include HIV, gonorrhea and chlamydia) to include syphilis. GSP currently operates the clinic three days a week, but hopes to bump that number to five days a week in the future. They also wish to expand their services beyond the scope of those who are not affected by HIV/AIDS and STIs. GSP utilizes the clinic to also offer additional education to the community. “We educate and bring awareness through our testing events,” Schlomer explains. “We offer walk-in testing twice weekly in the late afternoon and early evening hours. We also participate in community health fairs, and provide testing at various educational institutions such as the University of Missouri – Kansas City. We are also working with a group to promote sexual health education.” Schlomer believes their biggest impact in the community is through their case management program with which they are able to stay in contact with their patients. This allows GSP case managers to help monitor patients’ health, watch their medications and provide them with assistance whenever it is needed. Within recent years, the GSP has expanded their case management programs to include transitional case management in which the case manager helps aid incarcerated individuals who will soon be released shift from life within prison to the outside. They also have case managers who are located at the Johnson County, Kansas Health Department, the Research Medical Center campus and currently exploring options to locate at least one more case manager. GSP also offers an emergency assistance program – which has recently received an increase of use – which helps pay for patient housing, utilities and other needs. According to Schlomer, completed studies conclude that patients who have stable residence do better. GSP works with a partner pharmacy which provides home delivery to their patients who are involved with the program. What is really fantastic is their pharmacy is available to their patients 24/7 to answer any questions they may have about the pharmaceuticals they have been prescribed. The pharmacy also helps patients stay on their medications – as many people do not follow their treatments properly. “We are sitting with peoples’ lives in our hands and it matters,” Halastik says. “I think it’s important for us to be able to go out there and talk about the work that we do and be seen as relevant.” “My goals are to continue to do what we do best, that is, assist those living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Kansas City area,” Schlomer says in closing, “and to develop new partnerships with agencies who have a similar mission.” V

MICHAEL WILLETT

ON MAKING IT & FAKING IT Born and raised in California, Willett has always had a love for the arts. As a child, he would sing along with Disney cartoons and constantly perform. “My mom put me in theatre because I needed an outlet,” he says. “I was mostly drawn to music, and at some point, I realized that in order to perform a story, I needed to act and I became more focused on the acting. I sort of grew to love it and started auditioning in LA when I was 13.” In 2010, Willett moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting full time. Before Faking It, he was cast as Lionel Trane in the Emmy-Nominated Showtime series, United States of Tara, then went on to play Tanner in G.B.F. which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. Willett’s latest project, The Murder Pact, aired on Lifetime last month. Vital VOICE caught up with the MTV star to chat about the current season of Faking It, in addition to being gay in Hollywood and his standards on dating. We promise, none of this is a fake. thevitalVOICE.com

27

What do you and your cast mates like to do during downtime?

Sometimes we have sleepovers, sometimes we go to dinner. I just like having one on one time with each of them, honestly. I’m not like a big group person. I really like each of them for their unique personality and I’d do anything with them, but it’s mostly like one on one bonding for me. So you and your cast mates have a really good relationship with each other?

H

How has the second season of Faking It been going so far?

It’s been going well! People seem to be responding to it positively. It feels like no time has passed. In terms of audience, it feels like they stuck with us and the drama is only just beginning. Our characters get into a lot of trouble in the next ten episodes. How has your character evolved since season one?

I think he becomes more complex. We’re going to see that Shane is more vulnerable in this next set of episodes and he’s in a much darker place. So I would say that he evolves into a more complex character, where in the beginning he was more of Amy’s best friend. Shane has his own relationship now; his whole life is more complex. Do you still consider shane to be a lot like yourself?

I do, but he’s also sort of a more idealized version of myself. He’s more confident; he’s more talented at everything essentially. He’s sort of like a superhero version of me, but I definitely have an influence on the writing and character and how he dresses. I do have a lot of say and I do relate a lot to him.

28

October 2015

We do. Not because they’re not good people, but because it doesn’t always happen- to work with good people and work on a good project with good writers. I’m so blessed, really. What’s been your most embarrassing moment on or off set?

Where would you like to see shanes charachter go in a thrid season?

I would like to see his family life more. Where he comes from, how he interacts with his dad. It sounds like they have a good relationship. I also kind of have this idea that Shane sort of goes through like this abstinent period, so I wonder if that’s going to happen, but we’ll see. I just want to see him have more adventures, and the more variety the better. Outside of Faking It, what are some your career goals?

I have a deep desire to create art that is entertaining and thought provoking, so I want to continue to do that. I want to be an artist in its truest form. I work on music, I write music and I dabble in all different mediums of art. My grandpa was an artist and he’s a huge inspiration of mine, so I think that’s the larger goal. Can you give us a little more insight into your music career?

I released a single last year called “Started Over” and it’s a piece of this larger concept album that I divided up into three Eps which I should be releasing this year. It’s a way for me to express myself and my personal evolution, and that’s what it’s really about.

My whole life is an embarrassing moment after another! The other day I was on a red carpet and I didn’t know a series of popular songs and it was very apparent- just because I don’t listen to a lot of popular music. I like to listen to a lot of classic rock and my favorite artists from the 70s and 90s. So I guess that was my most embarrassing moment recently. What was Michael Willett like in high school?

[Laughs] I think he was very friendly and sweet but very introverted and very creative and felt sort of private. I would kind of go unnoticed as much as possible because I could tell what I liked other people didn’t necessarily like. That wasn’t just about my sexuality, it was on a number of subjects. I always thought what I liked was the coolest and should have been the most popular even though it wasn’t. So I sort of kept to myself and was an introverted artist. Were you out and open about your sexuality in high school?

I was, but I think everyone basically knew I was gay. Not because I was overly effeminate, but because of the things I liked and they could just sort of tell. I came out to my friends, but it wasn’t like a huge coming out for me. It was a natural progression I would say. Who was the first person you came out to?

I suppose myself [laughs]. At some point I realized this is what I like and this is who I am. But in terms of an external person, I don’t knowprobably one of my friends.

I think with anything in this industry, if you have something about you that makes you unique it sets you apart, and for me that was an aspect of who I am. For whatever reason, people appreciate it about me and it looked to my advantage. It’s pretty simple. I felt like it made munique for whatever reason. I wasn’t a stereotypical version of what people thought of as gay. I was just a person who happened to be gay. How was coming out to your friends different than coming out to your family?

With my friends, the impact is less severe because they don’t really have any preconceived notion about what it means to be gay and they just like you for you are. In terms of my family, it was about having to sort of adjust their version of my future in their head. So it’s not that it was so devastating to them, it was that they had to adjust their vision of my future slightly, and that can be difficult. You mentioned in The Advocate that being gay has given you an advantage in the industry. How so?

I think with anything in this industry, if you have something about you that makes you unique it sets you apart, and for me that was an aspect of who I am. For whatever reason, people appreciate it about me and it looked to my advantage. It’s pretty simple. I felt like it made me unique for whatever reason. I wasn’t a stereotypical version of what people thought of as gay. I was just a person who happened to be gay. Do you think it’s easier to play a gay character since you are gay in real life?

Sure. I think the best casting sometimes are people who are already like their characters, and I think especially with a television series you have to believe that these characters are real because you’re seeing them every week. I think it’s not until you are more well known that you’re able to branch off and play more contrasting characters.

When you are not onset or recording, what are some hobbies?

Have you had any embarrassing date moments yourself?

I really like to create art. Right now I’m working on my album artwork, so I’ve been working on this cool fan art project. I also like to exercise; I try to stay as fit as possible. Anything creative. I love going to museums. Whenever I’m traveling I like to go to art museums or historical museums. I also love science.

Not that I can remember. I have a knack for blocking these kinds of things out. If I embarrassed myself, I probably tried to forget about it. So I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I don’t remember.

Let’s talk about dating for a little bit. Are you currently seeing anyone?

That is top-secret private information [laughs]. I’m just a really private person and I always say even if I worked in a cubicle, I wouldn’t put photos of my family on my desk because I wouldn’t want to give people the opportunity to say anything negative. That’s just how I am. What’s your ideal first date?

My ideal first date is to not have a first date. I would rather meet someone under the condition of having mutual friends or just casually meeting someone. I hate how Americans have to do these sit down things where they grill each other and have all these expectations. I can’t do that. I probably won’t eat if that’s happening. So my ideal first date is not a first date. It’s just a natural connection between two people. When you’re dating someone, are you the planner or do you go with the flow?

Go with the flow usually. I like there to be a plan, but I don’t want to have to date a planner.

Outside of acting, can you talk about your LGBT activism?

Tell us about your first date with another guy.

I just actually toured the LGBT youth center in Los Angeles a few weeks ago and I donated to the AIDS Life Cycle Foundation, and I’m actually going to be setting up a web page so that people can donate there to the AIDS Life Cycle with a code so they can get a discount. I feel like everyday people can do really small things to help the LGBTQ community and I don’t think you necessarily need to be doing big things to have the conversation.

It was pretty awful actually. I realized in the first few minutes that we had nothing else to talk about, so I ended up sleeping with him. Naturally, of course. There was nothing to talk about, nothing else do it. It was bad though. It didn’t last very long. Would you say that was the worst date you’ve ever been on?

Yes. That’s why I’m so against first dates now!

What are some deal breakers for you when it comes to dating?

If you’re not a feminist, don’t even bother. I’m like a huge feminist and I come from a family of

feminists. If you’re not on board with that, then that’s a deal breaker. I also don’t like people who aren’t passionate. If you don’t have something you’re passionate about, I can’t be into you. Also, if we can’t carry on a conversation or you don’t excite me verbally, then I will be uninterested.

What do you think makes the man?

Being sensitive. I think that is a quality we don’t value enough in our society in terms of men. Sensitive men are sexy. That is an attractive quality and I think that we need to have more men like that. How many drinks is too many on the first dates?

For me, any drink! I don’t drink. Not because it’s like a rule or anything, I just don’t do well. I’m a lightweight and I’ll probably get sick and I don’t have any sense of control. So any drink is bad. Who do you call first after a date?

Either my best friend, Miranda, or my older sister who I’m super close with. Definitely someone to evaluate whether or not I’m the one going crazy or if that other person is crazy. V text DENNY PATTERSON art NIKKO LAMERE thevitalVOICE.com

The firm is often recognized with local and national awards for design, work quality and construction methods. The company’s current president, Sam’s son Scott, is known for his candor and plainspoken explanations in building methods and technology. Beginning his career in 1969, his industry and sense of purpose delivers a message of promoting mobility and comfort in our homes. Scott has held the position of carpenter, job-site foreman, superintendent, Master Builder and building designer. Mosby Building Arts offers numerous design and remodeling services including bathroom, exterior, kitchen and garage/driveway additions and basements. Repairs are also available for roofing, door/window, siding and water management. The Mosby process is designed to take the stress out home remodeling. Clients are fully educated and informed from start to finish. Mosby only hires experienced and dedicated professionals that will deliver expected results. One of the company’s designers, Jillian Brinkman, has been with Mosby for one year. With over seven years of commercial and residential design experience, she loves to help families transform their home into spaces they can love and be proud of. “I like getting to know clients, building a relationship and collaborating ideas,” she says. “I feel lucky that I get to be creative, solve puzzles and meet interesting people every day.” Brinkman’s passion for design started when she was a child. “I was constantly rearranging my room, drawing floor plans and designing tree houses,” she explains. “I’ve always been artistic and have an affinity for sculptural art. When a career in ceramics seemed impractical, I turned to interior design and have never looked back.” Primarily working with residential projects, Brinkman usually finds herself inspired by sourcing tile. When designing, she always commits to creating balance with color and natural textures. She also finds it interesting to explore vintage or antique pieces paired with something unexpected. She lives by the motto: “Perfection is boring – it’s okay to experiment!” Currently, Brinkman is working with a family on their contemporary kitchen remodel. “The family is a lot of fun to work with and they’re not afraid of color,” she says. “We’ve selected cabinetry with a deep Agean Sea blue finish that’s going to be stunning.

Jillian Brinkman In addition to their great style, they are an inspiring couple to be around. Our goal for the project is to start construction while the couple is traveling – scheduling both around her cancer treatments. By construction completion, we all hope that she’s free from cancer and celebrating in her new beautiful space.” “Being able to work in a field that I love makes me a happy person,” she says. “This really makes for a positive, fulfilled life.” V For more information, call (314) 909-1800, or visit mosbybuildingarts.com. text DENNY PATTERSON art MOSBY BUILDING ARTS thevitalVOICE.com

art MISSOURI BALLET THEATRE

text DENNY PATTERSON

The Missouri Ballet Theatre, founded by Adam Sage in May 2009, seeks to inspire and cultivate excellence in classical and contemporary dance. Sage’s core goal was to bring both forms of ballet to the community at large. In addition, Sage wanted to try and make it accessible to everybody and have as many people involved no matter what their background or economic state is. “The arts are not funded like they should be so everybody in whatever art form they’re in is always struggling,” Sage says. “The ballet in particular. There isn’t a lot of work out there available. There’s probably a ballet company in almost every major city, but you figure on average, that company might have 20-30 dancers. If you do the math, that’s not a lot of jobs when one city has at least 30-40 dancing schools each with 200 kids in it. “I had always dreamed of having my own company,” he continues. “I didn’t think I would necessarily start it from the ground up, but around 2008, I was a director of a private school for young people who wanted to become professional dancers. I’ve been noticing more and more over the years that there were a lot of young people who were graduating from this school and looking for work, but there was no work to be found so they would either have to quit or do something they really didn’t want to do. thevitalVOICE.com

are encouraged to come dressed up and decked out in their best Halloween outfit. The winner will receive some sort of prize. On Friday, a couple of well-known St. Louis drag queens will select members from the audience and pull them on stage and give them a drag makeover. The audience will decide whose makeover is the best and the winner will also receive some sort of prize. This is the first time for an intermission like this. “It will be ‘Glamorous Horror,’” Akasha says. “I’ll be glamorous and Makena Knight will provide the horror [laughs]. I’m a lot like Mary Poppins, I bring my bag of tricks with me everywhere I go. If you dig deep enough past the thirsty wigs, broken iPhone chargers, and old eyelashes you may find a hilarious moment just waiting to be made.” And when asked what she is most looking forward to about being a part of the Ballet? “Flexible men. Tight glutes,” she quickly responds. “I’m also most looking forward to interacting with an audience that isn’t accustomed to drag queens,” Akasha says in closing. “I’ve always believe that every time I pin in my wig and slip on my pumps, it’s an opportunity to change someone’s view on the gay community. I hope I make a few new fans and hopefully I find some dancers for pageants!”V So I thought, maybe now is the time. If I wait too long I’ll be too old and cranky and not want to do it. I was trying to create an organization where there would be opportunities and more opportunities available because I saw something in those young people. I wanted to create an organization that catered to dancers who wanted to work in a positive and helpful environment.” Move over Phantom of the Opera, it’s time to make way for Dracula at the Ballet. everyone goes to see The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Eventually, you have to not only cater to young children, but also try to reach out to those who are between the ages of 18-39 who may not have children, but want to go see a story that’s interesting that doesn’t involve a fairy princess.” According to Sage, the Missouri’s Ballet Theatre’s production will follow closely to the 1992 Gary Oldman movie timeline. However, there are some components of the show that are not particularly suitable for children. “Someone gets their head cut off, another character goes insane, we’ve replaced Dracula’s brides with zombies – the show is really geared towards young adults,” he says. Not only are audiences in for a frightening good show, but they will not want to miss out on intermission. The Thursday performance will have a costume competition so all attendees

Served over ice, garnished with a lemon.

Working at Rehab for a little over three months now, Amber has quickly become a favorite bartender at the popular Grove destination. “Saturday nights are my favorite nights to work because we have our drag shows,” she says. Saturday is the busiest night at Rehab, to no surprise, so it’s the night to catch all of your favorite bartenders at Rehab making their favorite drinks. “I love my coworkers and the atmosphere here,” she continues. “When you enjoy what you do, it never feels like ‘work.’” And when Amber’s not at “work,” she stays busy attending nursing school. So if she’s not unwinding with her co-workers, a night in to study and a snuggle session with her cats sounds just about right. “But don’t worry- I’m only like 50% crazy cat lady,” she laughs.

Rehab bar & Grill “The atmosphere at Rehab is relaxed and fun!” Amber says. “We just want everyone to have a great time and to look forward to coming back again. Rehab is an integral piece of the Grove because we accept everyone.” And at Rehab, there’s no pressure to be anyone but yourself. They are all about laughter, frivolity, and fun, so simply check the attitude at the door! That’s the philosophy of owners Jim Weckmann and Chad Fox, and a main reason why Rehab has consistently been a go-to destination in The Grove. With specialty drinks, a large selection of beer and spirits, excellent food, darts, a pool table and live entertainment, there’s truly something for anyone at Rehab.
