He’s Bravo’s “Persian Persuasion.” Reza Farahan, best known for his eccentric and outspoken personality on Shahs of Sunset is back on Bravo. And this time, he means business. On his new series, Yours, Mine or Ours, Reza – along with interior designer and decorator Taylor Spellman – helps couples decide whether they should renovate one of their current places or if they should join forces financially and buy a new home. It’s Reza’s job to find the couples a fresh start in a new home, while his partner and friendly show rival Taylor presents plans for renovation in one of the homes. It’s easier explained than delivered, and that Persian persistence translates into stiff competition on screen. Over the years, Farahan has created a high-end niche clientele based on referrals and repeat clients. His clients include Grammy award winners, stars of TV and film, as well as members of Middle Eastern royalty. Vital VOICE sat down with Reza to chat more about the series, his bustling career and, well, all things Reza. Your job on the show is to find couples a new place to live. Do you think that is usually the best option? I absolutely think that it is the best and, in my personal opinion, the only option. That way, there is – as I refer to it as – no negative ex energy. And by ex, I mean exes: no sex energy, no arguing, none of the energy from previous lovers. There’s no reference to a past; there’s none of that. You’re starting new, and you’re starting fresh. It’s neutral. What are you most excited to display on the show? The show is an amazing expression of what I do on a daily basis. A lot of my clients do not want to be on Shahs of Sunset because they think the show is all about nightlife and drama, so they’re not inclined to participate. So, I don’t get to always show that side of me that I’ve worked so hard at for so many years. How does this show portray you in regards to that of Shahs of Sunset? It’s such an amazing experience to have my daily routine on camera – you get to see what my days are. I’m driving around with clients, looking at houses, and it’s usually an amazing experience. It’s a fun time in peoples’ lives, looking at houses. It’s just a great profession and I get to share in these experiences that for some people is the most exiting time of their lives, and I don’t take that for granted. How important is it to, in your own words, “Put a stamp on it, bitches?” When I come home, my face lights up. There are beautiful things – not necessarily the most expensive things in the world – but

things that are special to me, and I display that. Some of the most special things to me are old photos, especially of my family. The walls are a color I chose. Everything that is in my home is something I love and I’ve placed. It’s beautiful to me and it really grounds me when I come home. It’s my sanctuary. What are some things that a couple should never compromise on when moving in? If there are space issues that you know you need, and if you are trying to compromise to the point that you know in your heart will interfere in your relationship, then don’t do it. For example, if you are moving into a tiny space and it only has one bathroom, and you know that you really like to take your time in the bathroom, maybe don’t move into that space. Drive out a little further and go into the suburbs, spend the same amount of money and get a place that has those two bathrooms. If you have needs, listen to the voice inside of you that’s saying, “there’s no fucking way I could live here,” regardless of how much you love that person. How do you think Adam and yourself would do in a situation like that on the show? We do a Yours, Mine or Ours situation on the daily at our house. I’m obsessed with furniture and design and architecture and homes, so we literally are laying in bed at night and I’m on my laptop looking at a Paul Evans sideboard that is in pristine condition and I am trying to convince him to let me buy it, but he cuts me off before I can even finish the sentence. So I tell him about it, he says ‘No’ and I have to tell him about how much storage it will give us, how much pleasure it will bring me, how much of a collector’s item it is; piece by piece we negoti-

ate. The old Reza would be like ‘Fuck you bitch, I’m buying it.’ These days, I’m learning that that doesn’t fly. And how is newlywed life treating you? It is way better than I thought it would be. I don’t know if it’s because my expectations were low and I knew it would be disastrous, or if I’m just married to the greatest guy in the world. He’s so considerate, he’s so thoughtful, he has embraced my family, my culture, he changed his last name, he texts my family, he does dinner with them, he’s a really great guy and the perfect balance to my craziness. What are the biggest challenges you are facing as a newlywed? The actual getting married makes a huge difference. You think that it’s just a piece of paper because we already owned the condo that we live in together. We were living together and we had pets together; we had that daily routine together. But the confidence that my man has now is completely different. He’s relaxed, he’s laid back, and he’s not worried that I’m going anywhere. He just has this new swag. V

It’s been a rocky road getting the singer’s third album released. She took time off to finish high school and worked on some films. In 2008, she went back to work on music. There was just one problem: her record label, Blackground, was facing its own set of growing pains (Google it). “It definitely impacted my life in a major way,” she explains. “There have been so many incarnations of the third album because none of them ever came out.” Unfortunately for her, something that did come out of it was a stalled career, a dramatic experience that she’s learned to live with. “I imagine I will still need to talk through it for a little while. It definitely shaped my career,” she continues. “I took a page out of what I saw in hip-hop: putting out mix tapes and being able to directly release to fans via the Internet. I started doing a nontraditional release.”

JoJo released two mix tapes: Can’t Take That Away From Me and Agape, in 2010 and 2012 respectively, plus three EPs: #LoveJo, III and #LoveJo2, all in the space of one year (2014-2015).

“I’m at a point where I’ve been through a lot. I can’t apologize for that. I’m not sorry” JoJo declares. “It’s kind of veiled in a break up anthem, but for me it is really a theme of empowerment.”

The hustle in this girl is strong. After settling a lawsuit with her record label, JoJo’s finally ready to release her long awaited third album. Mad Love is out October 14th. “People have supported me through the ups and downs and the uncertainties and that’s really what I feel, a crazy abundance of love,” she begins.

As cliché as that may sound, the video – which features LGBT people – really sells the track in terms of being an empowerment anthem.

But it’s not just about the love she feels, the album covers love in all of its forms.

“I just wanted the overall feeling to be one of beautiful images of people doing what the fuck they feel in the moment,” she continues.

“You can hear the different types of love: self-love, friendship, romance or sex,” she expands.

It was a natural fit for JoJo to include LGBT themes in the video, as many of her fans are LGBT and the singer herself starred in the 2013 film G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend).

Speaking of sex, when asked for some favorite tracks from Mad Love she mentions a song called “Edibles.” It’s self-explanatory, if you have the mind for it.

JoJo appropriately attributes to her own struggles and growth as the reason for identifying so strongly with gay, lesbian and transgender audiences.

“It is about getting high on edibles and having sex,” she says frankly, with a laugh.

“Through adversity you build character and you realize that you can make it through anything. The old JoJo was younger, of course, and more naïve. I just have a lot of life experience that I’m able to pull on now,” she shares.

In ten years, it’s expected that the JoJo we once knew has done some growing up. “It is a natural growth from 13 to 25. I’ve gotten more comfortable,” she explains. “My confidence comes from an honest place: knowing who I am, liking who I am and not apologizing for it.” JoJo’s unapologetic attitude has certainly resonated with her LGBT fans, most of who, at some point in their lives, have had to adopt the same attitude when facing aversion because of their sexuality. And like most of the LGBT community, she’s certainly making it clear that she has no intention of apologizing for who she is. In fact, the lead single from her album is frankly titled “Fuck Apologies.”

And now after waiting for so long, it’s time for the singer to pull on that life experience and tackle the project that she’s had waiting in the wings for so long. “At 25, it’s crazy to think twelve years ago, when I first put out music, that the twelve year olds in the audience now were just born. In many ways, I feel like a new artist. We’re building brick-by-brick, yet I have this experience and this incredibly loyal fan base. A General Election Guide: Candidates to Consider this November Let’s be honest for a second. It has been a very long, tiring and sometimes outright wacky year for election coverage. So, we completely understand the desire to tune most of it out at this point. But don’t worry; we’re not here today to talk about the presidential election. We’re not touching that one with a ten-foot pole. No, it’s our intention to wake you up from that presidential hangover and get you excited about the rest of the General Election ballot that’s coming up on November 8. Keep in mind that we’re certainly not political analysts. We’re community members like you. We share similar ideals and care about the same causes, so that’s what we’re focusing on. That being said—and with some help from our friends at PROMO Pac—here are just a few of the candidates that we are getting excited about this election.

There’s a lot to say about Senator Nasheed, but first and foremost is that we need a voice like hers in our state government especially in the wake of Ferguson. Nasheed was present at the Michael Brown protests as an advocate for non-violent protests. Even before that tragedy she has been involved in improving the African American community in Missouri as part of the Missouri Black Legislative Caucus.

As an attorney, Senator Sifton is well known for putting policy ahead of politics. It’s that dedication to the law and a fair and balanced legal system that makes him one of our picks this election cycle. Additionally, during his tenure he has been a part of many committees focused on protecting the environment from unethical consumer practices, as well as veteran’s affairs and healthcare.

As a candidate for the Missouri House of Representatives, Stevens is running on a campaign that puts LGBTQ equality, reproductive rights and improved access to healthcare front and center. Stevens is very proud of her work in 2013 around the rollout of the marketplace and the Affordable Care Act. In 2013 and 2014, Stevens helped Planned Parenthood with outreach programs and public education as a community organizer.

What stands out about House candidate Meredith is that he puts raising minimum wage as a priority, not only allowing citizens of Missouri to bring home a wage that they can support their families with, but also helping put more money back into the state’s economy. A big draw is his intention to push back against “religious freedom” bills that legalize discrimination against people in the LGBTQ community.

There are a ton of platforms that Representative Otto is running on, but what we find most appealing is his attention to making higher education more accessible and affordable for everyone. He is also a big advocate of a woman’s right to choose and providing women with the healthcare they need to make those decisions, as well as continuing to improve clean energy by supporting the PACE program.

As a candidate for Missouri Treasurer, Baker’s campaign focuses heavily on financial accountability in our government. She will make it easier for Missouri taxpayers to know how our money is being spent She is proposing a sort of annual report card that highlights where taxpayer money is being spent, a useful tool for small business owners and consumers that is intended to be easily searchable and decipherable.

Kander established #FergusonRebuild to help businesses that were destroyed in Ferguson. Second is his experience improving women’s rights in Missouri. Kander was a huge advocate of turning Missouri’s human trafficking laws into one of the strongest in the country.

Attorney General Chris Koster has served as the state of Missouri’s top law enforcement officer since 2009. We are interested in Koster because of his position on raising minimum wage and for restoring trust within our community between police officers and African-American communities. During Koster’s tenure, he led a task force to find the flaws in Missouri’s laws regarding domestic violence.

Life swiftly changed for 27-year-old Laith De La Cruz, all thanks to a pair of briefs and a viable social media account. “I wasn’t pursuing it,” he says. In case you missed it, this goes back to last year when Laith “broke the internet” with breathtaking photos of him in his Calvin Klein underwear. “When I got [the photos], I thought that they were amazing– let me post these on my Instagram,” he recalls. “I didn’t really think anything of it.” But some did. “I was getting contacted by other photographers that wanted to work with me. Then I was contacted by Slay [Model Management] to actually model, and the rest is history.” Vital

VOICE caught up with Laith just as he was wrapping up another successful season at New York Fashion Week. “It’s a huge roller coaster, and it has its ups and downs like any other job,” Laith says. “But I’m ready to ride that roller-coaster.” A ride that includes walking for fashion houses like Gypsy Sport and Adrian Alicea in New York Fashion Week. “I did one presentation yesterday for Asher Levine – he has some fantastic work,” he says. “You were able to actually sell the clothes and talk to the people walking through. They were able to actually feel the garments and have a conversation with the models.”

A Harlem native, Laith catapulted his career with a Barneys New York campaign, photographed by Bruce Weber, making his debut as one of the first transgender male models to ever appear in a national campaign. He’s graced the pages of Vogue Hommes, taking him to a point that most working models only dream of. Ah, the fashion industry. It’s a turbulent world that we can’t seem to get enough of. With such notoriety, it’s only natural that Laith take the next big step: a reality show. From Project Runway to America’s Next Top Model, The Rachel Zoe Project or even The Hills, the life of a model is a utopia that is traditionally unattainable. So what about the life of a trans* model? Enter in Strut, executively produced by Whoopi Goldberg. Strut premiered on the Oxygen Network last month, providing a behind-the-scenes look into the exotic world of fashion while openly revealing the facts of being a transgender model. The show follows five models – Laith included – who navigate it all, emotional family breakdowns included. It’s classic reality television with an essential twist. All five models are part of Slay Model Management, the first exclusive transgender modeling agency. Moreover, all five are fighting obstacles in owning their identity while working to break down barriers in the modeling industry and the world around them. “Slay introduced me to all the people I met through the show and all the other cast members,” Laith explains. He is not just the only male cast member on the show, he’s the only male model that is currently signed with Slay. “It definitely makes me stand out, but all of us stand out in one way or another. I’m extremely happy to have met all the girls on the cast and have grown so close with them that they are like family to me now. I’m proud that I know Whoopi [Goldberg], this huge star, and she is so supportive.”

You hav e t o ha v e t h a t s t r o n g s h e l l to tak e that, b ecause you ’re no t go i n g t o be accepted all the ti me.” Goldberg is very hands on in the project, and is overly accommodating in understanding the lives of the fives models on the show. “They are struggling with things we can all relate to – trying to make ends meet, fighting to make a name for themselves and navigating the minefields of personal relationships,” Whoopi says. “All of these struggles are amplified by the fact that they are taking on the responsibility of representing the transgender community in today’s society.” Be it the show, his social media, his New York state of mind or a concoction of all three, Laith has built up a steady portfolio within the past year. And with him entering the pinnacle of his modeling career, he gives a funny – yet not surprising – response as to what a dream campaign looks like. “Calvin Klein,” he quickly responds. “But I feel like I’m always in my underwear, so let me get dressed. Tom Ford suits; a beautiful fitted suit. That would be awesome.” Laith transitioned nearly three years ago come next February and has never looked back. “Honestly, being able to look in the mirror and feel whole, to be like, ‘I’m an adult now,’ it’s huge,” he says. “Before – even though I was in my twenties – when I looked at myself, all I saw was a little boy. I felt like I was never going to grow up or be viewed as the man that I was. Now I look in the mirror and see the man I’ve always been.” In order to fully identify with such a transition, Laith relays the most overstated yet underestimated message of all: being comfortable 28

in your own skin. “That’s especially for trans* people, where sometimes you start your transition later in life and it’s almost like you go through puberty as an adult,” he explains. “You have to be confident and strong within yourself before you get into an industry like this one where you’re always going to be criticized based upon your physical appearance. You have to have that strong shell to take that, because you’re not going to be accepted all the time.” Laith has always been a pretty private person, but he doesn’t have anything to hide. When he gets close and comfortable with an individual, he opens up and shares everything. He got a taste of that vulnerability last year when those first photos went viral. “I had a lot of positive feedback, but initially there was a lot of negative feedback from people outside of the community,” he says. “There was mis-gendering, people saying I would never be a real man, calling me a woman or a she. It was very nasty and hurtful, and my first reaction was to retreat. I wanted to shut down all my social media pages and lay low for a while, but then I realized that it is a time for our voices to be heard. Having worked with so many young people who don’t have anyone to look up to like themselves, there is a need for young trans* people to have someone they can look up to –or a group of people to look up to – and see themselves on TV and in the media. If I can be that person, or the girls on the show can be those people, then it will also allow the doors to open for other upcoming models or musicians. It just shows that whatever your dreams are, you can accomplish them.”

While social media is what got his the foot in the door, Laith is now able to use outlets like Instagram to promote not only his own brand, but his own cause. “It’s become a way for me to share my story and the growth of my career in modeling,” he explains. “It’s continuing to grow daily, and I’m really happy with the support I’m getting from people within and outside the community. I think it is very important, especially in this time where the topic of transgender issues is becoming a talking point. Now it’s an issue, and people are actually listening. It’s our time to tell our stories and show that there is so much diversity within the community. Just let people know that we’re here and we exist.” Getting comfortable is his own skin has been easy for Laith in the past couple years, but not without its kinks. “[Transitioning] hasn’t been that difficult and honestly it usually tends to be a little easier to transition for trans* men in general,” he says. “I guess if I have to say anything that has been difficult, it has just been my relationship with my mom. She loves me and is super supportive, but sometimes her religious views stand in the way.” Opinions ands views differ considerably, something that you will see on the show. Heart-to-heart scenes with his mother are compelling, something that hits quite close to home for most in the community. But his resilience shows leadership, something that that’s not to be underestimated. Besides being a great model, he shows potential to achieve something great, both professionally and personally. As for now, it’s all about growth, with a little love on the side.

Zócalo Margarita Zócalo opened in October of 2011 on the Country Club Plaza, introducing Kansas City to fresh, contemporary Mexican cuisine. Their 5400 square-foot restaurant houses a large open bar area with more than 60 tequilas crafted with 100 percent blue agave used to create handcrafted cocktails. The restaurant is home to one of Kansas City’s most extensive tequila and mezcal offerings, with more than 90 to sample, plus an array of both traditional and specialty margaritas.

Nara Sushi Not your typical Japanese restaurant, Nara is a hybrid entity where substance and style mingle to create a hip, happening spot in the heart of the Crossroads. Owner Casey Adams says that he chose Nara’s modern concept “to give Kansas City something they didn’t have before; the food speaks for itself because there’s nothing to hide behind, the display is pure.” The sushi at Nara is our favorite consistently fresh, unique and a staple in the Kansas City area.

It’s fall again, and everything from flavored coffee to lip balm bears the flavor of pumpkin. Not to miss its opportunity, Schlafly Brewery has put its pumpkin stout back on shelves. The pumpkin stout began as a blend of the company’s pumpkin ale and oatmeal stout, and the new flavor quickly became a seasonal tradition. The dark and luscious beer has a less aggressive pumpkin taste than Schlafly’s pumpkin ale, but still offers a smooth, roasted sweetness with the ideal dosing of autumn spices. At 6.8% ABV, the pumpkin stout makes a perfect sipping beer.

For those who feel a little overwhelmed by the seasonal onslaught of pumpkin flavoring, Schlafly Brewery and 4 Hands Brewery have other fall beers lined up for you. Schlafly delivers apple-picking goodness in their Hard Apple Cider. With a medium gold appearance, this cider strikes the right balance of dry, crisp apple flavor with just the right amount of sweetness in the finish. This cider stands out as a great alternative to the too sweet ciders on the market today. So if you can’t quite make it to Eckert’s to do some apple picking this fall, perhaps a stroll down to the Schlafly Tap Room will appease your appetite for apple flavor. For those looking for something a little hoppier in their glass, Schlafly has the special release for you. The American IPA, or AIPA, is the product of the company’s annual pilgrimage to the hop farms of the Pacific Northwest. They use a combination of American varietals that impart the beer with a pleasant bitterness and aromas of citrus and fruit. The AIPA gets its bold flavor from 100% American hops, and deep-gold hue and full body flavor from pale and crystal malted barley. This makes the perfect IPA beer for the drinker 48

The Snake Oil is a seasonal red IPA brewed with a winning combination of American and Australian hops. The inclusion of Carmel malts lends this beer a full body. 4 Hands also has the Divided Sky Rye IPA, which boasts Centennial, Columbus and Cascades in this hop lover’s dream. Sticking true to the German beer festival time of year, Schlafly also provides a delicious Oktoberfest beer. This German Lager is clean and balanced in its amber color. With its blend of sweetness and toasted malts, Oktoberfest is authentic in its taste and evokes the spirit of its heritage. Schlafly uses Munich malt and German hops for this tasty tribute to Bavaria.
