The Tradition Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now, in its 60th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 127 national championships, including 67 in women’s competition and 60 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 146 times in men’s competition and 102 times in women’s action.

Jessica Price became the school’s all-time assist leader against Clemson on October 4 as she moved ahead of Mami Yamaguchi for the top spot. Tiffany McCarty and Ines Jaurena were named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as Florida State was one of nine schools with at least two players named to the 38-member list. Kelsey Wys became FSU’s all-time leader in overall shutouts and in wins against league opponents in 2012. She also set the school record for the longest consecutive shutout minute streak in ACC play. With a 1-0 victory at Arkansas, head coach Mark Krikorian reached a historic milestone earning his 300th career win at the college level becoming the 25th coach to reach 300 career wins across all divisions at an NCAA school.

Became the first team in history to defeat North Carolina in thee consecutive seasons. The 2012 senior class is the winningest class in program history with a .715 winning percentage. Freshman have played more than 50% of the team’s minutes this season. Maryland is the No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament for just the third time in program history.

Boston College 13 players on the roster have contributed at least a point this season. BC’s win over then-No. 1 ranked FSU (Oct. 18) was the first victory over the Seminoles in 11 games. The only time BC got the best of FSU was in the 2004 NCAA Tournament when the two teams were tied after overtime and BC advanced on PK’s. The Eagles played 10 ranked teams this season. BC earned a tie vs. No. 4 Stanford on the road, tied No. 8 UCF, defeated No. 8 V-Tech on the road and defeated No. 1 FSU at home. BC has outscored its opponents, 46-25. Three freshmen – McKenzie Meehan, Jana Jeffrey and Lauren Bernard – have combined for 13 goals and four assists this season.
Clemson Clemson defeated rival South Carolina by a score of 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday, September 1, 2012 in Columbia, SC. Sophomore forward Liska Dobberstein scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers in the 110th minute, just 28 seconds before time would have run out in the second overtime period. Seven of the 11 players in Clemson’s starting lineup in 2012 were underclassmen. The Tigers’ regular starting lineup consisted of four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and two seniors. There were just two seniors on the Clemson roster in 2012, midfielder Maddy Elder and defender Heather Marik, both who were four-year starters for the program. In four seasons, Elder started 55 out of 66 games and Marik started 67 out of 72 games for the Tigers. Elder was the team leader in scoring in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and led the team in assists in 2012 with six.
Duke Duke has been one of the highest scoring teams in the nation this season averaging 2.89 goals a match heading into the postseason. Junior Laura Weinberg owns an ACC-best 15 goals on the year to lead Duke and rank seventh nationally. Kim DeCesare has tallied 12 goals, which ranks 21st nationally as well. Freshman Cassie Pecht has tied a Duke freshman record with 11 assists on the season. Tara Campbell has been named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. Fans can go online and vote once per day for Campbell at www. seniorclassaward.com. Duke led all ACC women’s soccer programs with 27 selections to the 2011-12 ACC Honor Roll.
Miami Emily Lillard finished the season ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in save percentage (.798), saves (67) and shutouts (eight). The sophomore keyed a 447-minute defensive scoreless streak heading into the team’s ACC Championship opener against Maryland. With a roster marked by an influx of newcomers, six freshmen tallied goals during the 2012 season. The Hurricanes defeated a team ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history with a win in their regular season finale against Florida State Oct. 25. A dramatic goal from sophomore forward Ashley Flinn with less than two minutes remaining sent Miami to its first berth in the ACC Championship since 2008. Only two of the team’s seven losses on the season came by more than one goal. The Hurricanes lost match-ups with USF, then-No. 9 UCF, No. 7 Wake Forest, then-No. 2 Duke, and No. 9 Maryland by a combined five goals.

Only a junior, Katie Stengel took over first place on the Wake Forest all-time goals and points charts this season. Tony da Luz won his 200th game as head coach at Wake Forest. He joins Anson Dorrance (UNC) and Allison Foley (BC) as the only active ACC coaches with 200 wins at their current school. Katie Stengel and Aubrey Bledsoe were named Preseason All-Americans by Soccer America. Both are on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
North Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance has a 738-49-28 record in 34 seasons of coaching at UNC. The Tar Heels had their highest offensive output since August 28, 2011 when they beat Miami 6-1 at Fetzer Field on September 30, 2012. Six different Tar Heels scored in the match. Three different Tar Heels posted a pair of assists in Carolina¹s 5-0 win over San Diego on September 9. The Tar Heels are 3 for 4 on penalty kicks this season. Senior midfielder Amber Brooks has been named one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. Fans can go online and vote once per day for Brooks at www.seniorclassaward.com.
NC State With five goals each, redshirt sophomore Jennie Krauser and freshman Brittany Stako led NC State. Sophomore Jessica Baity was named College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week for her game-winning goal against Texas. Sophomore Shelli Spamer was recognized on the CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll. She assisted on both goals in the 2-1 win over LSU. Jessica Baity scored in the 84th minute, and goalie Victoria Hopkins made three saves in the Pack’s first win of the season at Texas. Goalie Victoria Hopkins had two shutouts during the 2012 season.
Virginia Tech The 9-0-0 start is the best season start in program history and most consecutive wins in team history. Senior Kelsey Mitchell has started every game in her career and became Tech’s all-time leader in career games started with 86 against Virginia on Oct. 21. Ashley Meier’s goal against Clemson made it all the way to No. 7 on Sports Center’s Top-10 Plays Thursday, Oct. 18. In not only two compete seasons, head coach Chugger Adair notched his 25th win when Tech beat Oklahoma, 3-1. Senior Kelsey Mitchell was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Team of the Week on Aug. 21 as she assisted the Hokies to two shutouts during the opening weekend.
