Ohio State returns three starters and 11 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished 25-7.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Ohio State has won at least a share of the last eight Big Ten Player of the Year awards in Jessica Davenport (2005-07), Jantel Lavender (2008-11) and Samantha Prahalis (2012).

North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell is the second-winningest active coach in Division I with 879 career wins. Hatchell also won her 600th career game at Carolina during the 2011-12 season at Virginia Tech on Jan. 19, joining Kay Yow and Debbie Ryan as coaches with at least 600 wins at an ACC school.

This season’s squad figures to be one of the youngest in program history with just three seniors and no juniors on the roster. The Tar Heels welcome five freshmen as well as a sophomore transfer in Erika Johnson, who comes to Chapel Hill from Cal.

Ohio State has won 14 Big Ten championships in school history, the most of any school in the conference. The Buckeyes won a record six in a row from 2005-10. Ohio State has 218 victories over the past eight years – the ninthmost among NCAA Division I teams.

Ohio State recorded its 10th straight 20-win season under head coach Jim Foster last season, marking the 26th of Foster’s career and his 13th consecutive overall. Ohio State led the Big Ten and ranked seventh in the NCAA in FG percentage at 46.2 percent last season. It also finished 14th in the NCAA in 3-point shooting at 35.9 percent. Ohio State finished second in the Big Ten and 13th in the NCAA with 74.8 ppg last season. It also led the Big Ten in blocked shots and assist/TO ratio.

**Johnson will sit out the first semester due to NCAA transfer rules

Senior guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt will enter her final season at Carolina as the team’s starting point guard. A versatile player who has seen time at no fewer than four positions during her career and the team’s best on-ball defender, Ruffin-Pratt will be asked to run the Tar Heel offense in 2012-13. Carolina took its fourth international tour over the summer, traveling to Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The Tar Heels were 3-0 on the trip with wins over club teams in Prague and Vienna and the Hungary U20 National Team.

The University of Iowa women’s basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 19-12 overall record, including a tie for second place in the Big Ten with an 11-5 mark. The Hawkeyes won their final eight regular season games to finish tied for

FSU’s streak of seven straight NCAA Tournaments ended in 2012, but FSU is looking to bounce back behind All-ACC forward Natasha Howard, fifth-year seniors Chasity Clayton and Alexa Deluzio and a healthy Morgan Toles – a senior point guard who played in four games last year after transferring before suffering a season-ending injury. Clayton, Deluzio and Toles are all captains this season.

Iowa was an at-large selection for the NCAA Tournament, earning a No. 9 seed in the South Bend first and second round site. Last year marked the ninth time in 12 seasons under head coach Lisa Bluder that Iowa has been selected for the NCAA Tournament, including each of the last five seasons. The Hawkeyes have participated in postseason play in all but one season, under Bluder (two WNIT appearances).

Iowa’s win over 13thranked Purdue marked the 13th time under Bluder that the Hawkeyes have defeated a top-15 team. Iowa has at least one win against a top25 team in all but two seasons under Bluder. The Hawkeyes return second team All-Big ten center Morgan Johnson, third team All-Big Ten pick Jaime Printy and unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection Samantha Logic. Johnson led the Big Ten and finished seventh in the NCAA in field goal percentage (54.9), Printy ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA in free throw percentage before an ACL injury and Logic recorded the fourth tripledouble in school history.

Deluzio shot 91.9 percent from the free throw line in ACC games to lead the conference and shot 84 percent overall from the charity stripe to set an FSU single-season record. She started at point guard last season but will move to shooting guard. Deluzio averaged 13.1 ppg last season – fifth-most in the league among returners in the conference. Over the past three seasons, FSU has been the best shooting team in the ACC – making a conference-best 44.8 percent of its shots in ACC games over that span (44 games).

The Badgers improved to 3-2 all-time in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge after defeating Boston College 58-50 last season.

WISCONSIN BADGERS

The 2011-12 Badger team was the best 3-point shooting and free throw shooting team in UW history. Wisconsin set overall and Big Ten-season records for 3-pointers made and attempted as well as free throw percentage.

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES

Monet Tellier led the team, averaging 13.7 points per game. Aerial Wilson added 12.1 points per game and upped her averaged to 13.0 in ACC contests. Alyssa Fenyn added 7.8 ppg and led the team in assists with 88 and steals with 49. Porschia Hadley tallied 5.6 ppg. Virginia Tech protected the ball well last season, recording just 467 turnovers to its opponents 509. The tally marked the third fewest turnovers in a season by the Hokies in program history. The 199091 team holds the record with 454.

Wisconsin returns two of its top three scorers for 2012-13. Senior Taylor Wurtz led the Badgers with 16.1 points per game last season while junior Morgan Paige added 10 points per game.

TAYLOR WURTZ

UW returns two of the most improved scorers in the Big Ten last season. Based on scoring averages from 2010-11, Wurtz (+7.8 ppg/3rd) and Paige (+6.7/6th) ranked among the most improved players in the conference. The Badgers’ freshman class features the 2012 Miss Wisconsin Basketball in Nicole Bauman, a member of the Canadian Junior National team in Dakota Whyte and two allstate players in Makailah Dyer and Tessa Cichy. Freshman Makailah Dyer is the second generation of her family to put on the Cardinal and White. She follows her mother, Janet (Huff), who played for the Badgers from 1980-84, earning All-Big Ten honors in 1984. Her aunt, Theresa (Huff) also played for UW from 1979-83 and is the only women’s basketball player to have her number retired. Theresa ended her career as the Badgers’ all-time scoring and rebounding leader.

Tech picked up a milestone win last season, defeating then-No. 8 Maryland on the road. The Terrapins held the 34-31 advantage at halftime, but the Hokies out-scored Maryland 4435 in the second period to pull off the win. It marked just the third win in program history over a team ranked eighth or higher. The previous win over a top-8 was 10 years prior. Monet Tellier tied a career-high with 31 points. The Hokies welcome five newcomers to the team this season. Freshmen Lauren Evans, Alexis Lloyd, Alex Kiss-Rusk and Taijah Campbell as well as JUCO transfer Uju Ugoka. The Blue Devils return four starters, 10 letterwinners and 88.7 percent of their scoring from a year ago, which is the third-highest among top 25 teams in the final 2011-12 AP poll.

Michigan is 4-1 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, dropping its first game of the series last season at No. 6 Maryland.

The Wolverines are led by first-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico, who was named the ninth head coach in school history in April. She spent the last 10 years at St. John’s, leading the Red Storm to the last three NCAA Tournaments, including the 2012 NCAA Sweet 16.

Duke welcomes back its top six scorer’s from a year ago – Elizabeth Williams (14.0), Chelsea Gray (12.5), Tricia Liston (12.0), Haley Peters (10.8), Chloe Wells (9.4) and Richa Jackson (9.4).

U-M went 20-12 in 201112, earning its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2000-01. It was Michigan’s fourth 20-win season in program history.

The Blue Devils welcome the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in the nation with the addition of Alexis Jones (Irving, Texas), Sierra Moore (Hanover, Pa.) and Katie Heckman (Centennial, Colo.) to the 2012-13 roster. Jones and Moore were McDonald’s All-America selections last season. Head coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her sixth season with the Blue Devils, after collecting a 141-32 mark the first five years at Duke. McCallie has led the Blue Devils to three straight ACC regular season crowns and the 2010 and 2011 ACC Tournament titles. She was the 2010 and 2012 ACC Coach of the Year. Known as Coach P around the nation, she collected a 457-180 overall record in 20 years as a head coach. Duke features a 30-game home winning streak against ACC opponents in Cameron Indoor Stadium entering the 2012-13 season.

Michigan’s roster features two former Michigan Miss Basketball winners in senior Jenny Ryan and freshman Madison Ristovski. It is only the second time that two former winners have been on the team. Senior Jenny Ryan will serve as captain for the 2012-13 season. Ryan has started all but one game in her career, appearing in every contest since the 2009-10 season. The Wolverines will play 17 games at newly renovated Crisler Center this season. Phase II was recently completed, adding approximately 63,000 square feet to the facility.

MARYLAND TERRAPINS

Maryland welcomes a stellar newcomer class this year. Redshirt junior Katie Rutan, a transfer from a top 10 program in Xavier, is eligible. At Xavier, she shot over 39 percent from outside the arc and averaged over 8.0 points per game. Malina Howard, Chloe Pavlech and Tierney Pfirman make up Frese’s ninth-straight top 10 recruiting class. Howard was the No. 1 post player and No. 6 overall recruit in the country. Pfirman was ranked No. 22 overall in the nation.

Senior Tianna Hawkins has made incredible strides in her career. As a junior, she made the All-ACC Second Team and led the nation with her field goal percentage of 62.3. Hawkins returns this year stronger and ready for action in the paint in 2012-13.

Entering the 201213 season, NU’s four returning starters – Lindsey Moore (98), Jordan Hooper (64), Emily Cady (33), Hailie Sample (33) had all started every game of their college careers. Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper were two of 25 players named to the Wade Watch List and Preseason Wooden Award Top 30 before the 2012-13 season.

One of the tallest teams in the country, they led the ACC in scoring and the nation in rebounding last season and return 73.5 percent of their offense and 75 percent of their rebounding. Maryland’s average height as a team is once again over 6-0. Junior Alyssa Thomas is just the second junior in history to return as the ACC Player of the Year. She led the league in scoring last year, was named ACC Tournament MVP, a WBCA AllAmerican, a First Team AP All-American, and a USBWA All-American.

Jordan Hooper became the first sophomore in Nebraska history to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career in 2011-12. Hooper entered her junior season with 1,078 points and 511 rebounds. She also ranked fifth in school history with 134 three-pointers in her first two seasons. Lindsey Moore was one of eight finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, presented to the nation’s top point guard in 2012. Moore entered the 201213 season ranked No. 16 at Nebraska in points (1,160), fourth in assists (504) and eighth in threepointers (121). Emily Cady ranked among the top six freshmen in the Big Ten in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots in 2011-12. The Big Ten All-Freshman selection averaged 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph was a standout at Purdue from 1988-92. She graduated as Purdue and the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer and was the only player in conference history to rank in the top 10 in points and assists. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1989, first team All-Big Ten in 1990, 1991 and 1992 and was named Big Ten Player of the Year and a KODAK AllAmerican in 1992.

The Boilermakers are the defending Big Ten Tournament champions, winning their third title in six years under head coach Sharon Versyp. Overall, Purdue has eight tournament championships, twice as many as any other Big Ten team.

Purdue is the only Big Ten team to win an NCAA national championship in women’s basketball and has made three Final Four appearances.

Georgia Tech will be trying for its seventh consecutive 20-win season and seventh straight NCAA Tournament bid. Joseph has said this is her most talented and best offensive team, but her least experienced with six freshmen on the roster. Joseph believes the backcourt of Tyaunna Marshall, Sydney Wallace and Dawnn Maye is one of the best in the ACC, if not the country. The Yellow Jackets were picked third by both the coaches and media in the ACC preseason poll, the highest Tech has ever been picked. Marshall was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team as well. Marshall will score her 1,000th career point this season (she enters the year with 978 points) and will be the 26th Yellow Jacket with 1,000 career points and only the 10th Tech player to score 1,000 points before her senior season.

Drey Mingo sat out last season with an ACL injury, but was a starter in 2010-11 and earned third team All-Big Ten. Last season, point guard KK Houser and leading rebounder Sam Ostarello were both starters who earned honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media. Purdue has made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 18 in the last 19 years. The Boilermakers own a 44-21 NCAA Tournament record, including wins in 15-straight first-round games and 17-1 overall in first-round matchups.

Clemson’s scoring defense has improved in each of Itoro Coleman’s first two seasons; Last season’s 65.1 points allowed per game was the lowest for a Clemson team since the 2002-03 season.

Indiana first year head coach Curt Miller will be participating in his first ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Miller spent the last 11 seasons at Bowling Green State University where he compiled a record of 292-58 (.737), winning at least a share of the MAC title in each of the last eight seasons, going to the postseason in each of those years and winning five MAC tournament championships with five NCAA Tournament appearances.

Clemson defeated No. 21 North Carolina last season in Chapel Hill, the Tigers’ first win over a ranked team since 2003. The Lady Tigers attempted just 315 three-point goals last season, their lowest figure since the 1997-98 season. The Lady Tigers are the third least-experienced team in the nation in terms of average years played (0.833 years/player) (research by UIC SID Mike Laninga)

Head Coach Joe McKeown took his team on a four-game exhibition tour of Italy during the summer of 2012 during which the team went 4-0 against Italian professional squads in Rome, Florence and Stresa.

Northwestern Wildcats

New BC head coach Erik Johnson was an assistant coach under former coach Cathy Inglese from 2005 to 2008. Johnson became the head coach at Denver and took former BC assistant Yvonne Hawkins with him. The two compiled a record of 7252 in four years at Denver before returning to the Heights in May.

BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

Senior forward Kendall Hackney is the Wildcats’ leading returning scorer after finishing eighth in the Big Ten during the 201112 campaign with 15.0 points per game.

This is Boston College’s 40th season in program history. The Eagles first became a varsity program at the Heights in 19721973 under the direction of first-year coach Maureen Enos.

Hackney, who also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game in 2011-12, and senior forward Dannielle Diamant are two of only five returning Big Ten players who finished last season ranked among the conference’s top 15 in scoring and rebounding.

Boston College returns four regular starters to the lineup this season – lone senior Kerri Shields, junior center Katie Zenevitch, junior guard Tiffany Ruffin and junior guard/forward Kristen Doherty. Shields’ remains the only senior on the roster, while Zenevitch, Ruffin and Doherty are three of five juniors on the team. BC has two transfers on the roster this season. Prior to Coquese Washington’s tenure, the Lady Lions had only one McDonald’s High School All-American in program history, but with the addition of Candice Agee, Penn State will tout three McDonald’s High School All-Americans on their roster this season, joining Maggie Lucas and Dara Taylor.

In 2012-13, head coach Katie Meier and her staff will begin their eighth year at the helm in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round for the second consecutive season, finishing second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 14-2 record. Overall, Miami finished with a 26-6 record, the third straight 20-win season for Meier.

Freshman center Candice Agee helped the USA Basketball U18 National Team to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in Puerto Rico in August. Agee had an 11-point and fourrebound performance in dominating 99-26 victory over Puerto Rico. Senior guard Alex Bentley opens her senior season in the top 15 in the Penn State record books in several categories, including scoring, assists, steals and field goal attempts. Despite only being a junior, Maggie Lucas is in the program’s top 25 in career scoring, top five in all-time three-point field goals made, career three-point field goal percentage and career three-point field goals attempted. Senior center Nikki Greene has an opportunity to become just the fourth player in school history to be a part of an elite club with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Greene would need to average 5.4 points and 9.2 rebounds in a 30-game season to accomplish the milestone. The members of the 1,000-1,000 club are Susan Robinson (2,253-1,070), Kahadeejah Herbert (2,025-1,103) and Andrea Garner (1,619-1,016).

Miami returns two All-ACC players for the 2012-13 campaign. Sharp-shooting point guard Stefanie Yderstrom earned thirdteam conference honors last season, leading the ACC with 68 threepointers. Morgan Stroman was well on her way to earning conference honors for the second consecutive season. However, midway through the season, the 2009 McDonald’s All-American tore her Achilles’ tendon, ending her junior campaign. As a sophomore, the forward earned third-team honors.

The Hurricanes enter the season with the nation’s second-longest home win streak. Only Stanford (79) has more consecutive home wins than Miami’s 40 inside the BankUnited Center. Defending national champs Baylor also has 40 consecutive home wins. Kentucky and Ohio State are next in line with at 20 straight wins. In addition to the always exciting ACC schedule, Miami will welcome two top-ranked programs to the BankUnited Center. On Nov. 18, the Canes will face Tennessee for the second-consecutive season. Senior forward Katie Loberg is Minnesota’s top rebounder from a season ago, as she averaged 5.7 rebounds per game.

The aggressive 2011-12 Cavalier defense also led the ACC in stealsper-game (13.1) and in turnover margin (+8.31). They ranked second among all DI schools in steals per game and third in turnover margin.

Minnesota Lynx guard Monica Wright, a Virginia alum, had her number 22 retired in a halftime ceremony during the Cavaliers season-opener. Wright is Virginia’s all-time leading scorer with 2,540 points. She currently wears No. 22 for the Lynx.

Pam Borton returns 67.8 (1644 of 2423) percent of her offensive production from last season and 60.2 (882 of 1465) percent of her rebounding efforts. Rachel Banham brings the bulk of the Gophers’ offensive numbers, as she averaged 16.1 points per game in 2011-12, while also adding to the rebounding returns after averaging 5.2 boards per game.

Boyle’s teams are known for their defense. In her first year with Virginia, the Cavaliers led the ACC by holding opponents’ scoring to 54.1 points per game. The year before Boyle arrived, the team was allowing 64.5 ppg, a reduction of over 10 points per game. Boyle had a similar impact when she took over at California, with the Bears allowing 60.1 ppg in her first season (2005-06) after averaging 71.3 points allowed the year before.

Junior guard Ataira Franklin’s 12.4 ppg average last season ranks ninth among all players returning to the ACC this season. Franklin was named to the preseason All-ACC team by both the ACC Coaches and the ACC Blue Ribbon Panel.

Minnesota will welcome back Kayla Hirt to its 2012-13 roster, a top100 ranked recruit who averaged 26.0 points and 14.1 rebounds per game as a high school junior, after missing last year due to injury. Junior Micaëlla Riché, along with sophomore Rachel Banham, was named one of the Gophers’ team captains this season. The forward from Ontario started the last seven games for Minnesota, which included two games in the Big Ten Tournament and four contests in the Gophers’ run to the WBI Championship. Riché dedicated herself to become a fit and wellrounded player in the offseason and looks to be one of Minnesota’s biggest assets in the frontcourt.
