speakers

Tom Ashbrook

Gloria Cordes Larson

Host: On Point | WBUR, NPR

President | Bentley University

Tom Ashbrook is the host of the fastestgrowing NPR show in America, “On Point.” Tom was raised on a farm in Illinois, studied history in India, and was a surveyor and dynamiter in the Alaskan oilfields before taking his first job in news at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. An awardwinning journalist in print and broadcast, he served as a top-ranking editor at The Boston Globe. He spent ten years in Asia, and has worked as a correspondent around the world in Beijing, Moscow, Mumbai, the Balkans,

Rwanda, Somalia and more. In the 1990s he was co-founder of homeportfolio.com, a start-up chronicled in his 2000 book, “The Leap.” In 2001, Tom was enlisted to host emergency coverage of the 9/11 attacks for NPR. That coverage grew into the national news and interview show “On Point.”

Gloria Cordes Larson, JD, prominent lawyer, public policy expert and business leader, was elected to the presidency of Bentley University in 2007. She is an advocate for education and job creation, a commitment evident in her work as co-chair of the board of the non-partisan think tank MassINC; co-chair of the Great Schools Campaign, a school reform partnership; and her role in Global Massachusetts 2015, a multi-year leadership initiative to create a vision for economic success over the next decade. Larson recently served as co-chair of Governor Deval Patrick’s Finance Commission, charged with recommending revenue sources to fund his education reform proposal. She presently serves as a member of Governor Patrick’s Council of Economic Advisors, as well as chairman of the Education Working Group for the Progressive Business Leaders Network, an association she helped found. She has been honored and recognized by many groups for her contributions and commitment to civic engagement, particularly with respect to raising awareness of the need for public education reform and for promoting the role of business in changing that landscape.

Larson was appointed by Governor Mitt Romney in 2005 to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy Board, where she currently serves as a vice chair. Larson presently holds the post of president of the Massachusetts Women’s Forum, as well as president of the Massachusetts Conference for Women, which annually hosts a leadership forum for more than 5,000 professional women from across the state. In addition, she is a board or advisory council member of several organizations including the University of Massachusetts Center for Collaborative Leadership, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and Rosie’s Place, a Boston shelter for women and children. She is a member of the Bar in Massachusetts and Virginia. Larson received her Bachelor of Arts with honors from Vassar College and earned her juris doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. She is married to Allen Larson, an attorney. They have three English Labrador Retrievers, Harry, Sally and Teak.

Subhadra England

Emily Green

Founder & President | ThinkFlex, LLC

Chairman | Yankee Group

Subhadra England is the founder and president of ThinkFlex, a placement firm that primarily connects professional mothers with employers that provide flexible work options in the Boston area. Earlier this year, ThinkFlex began a pilot internship program for professionals who have been out of the workforce for more than five years. This new program is designed to allow interns the opportunity to update their skills, expand their network and gain confidence. As a working mother who re-launched her career, Subhadra is very excited about the program because of her personal experiences with the difficulties of rejoining the workplace after taking time off. Subhadra has 14 years of experience in the investment industry. The majority of her career was spent with John Hancock Advisers in a variety of roles within institutional marketing, risk management, performance measurement and equity investment management. After leaving John Hancock, she took a career break for 3 ½ years to raise three daughters before launching ThinkFlex.

Subhadra loves being an entrepreneur within the work-life arena because it has enabled her to make a difference with her life’s work and strike a balance between professional and family commitments. Through her work at ThinkFlex, she has also discovered an interest in urban education, and now sits on the New England Advisory Board for Let’s Get Ready, an organization that prepares and empowers low-income high school students to get into college. Subhadra is a graduate of Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and International Business.

Emily Green is chairman of the board at Yankee Group Research, Inc. In this role, she helps guide the firm’s direction, speaks to the market and works with key clients. As the firm’s CEO from 2005 to 2010, she partnered in its acquisition with primary investor Alta Communications and led its transition to the global connectivity research vision it calls “Anywhere.” In her long and varied career in technology as an engineer, entrepreneur, marketer and analyst, Green has become widely respected as a thought leader on the impact of connectivity on networks, enterprises and consumers.

Green received a Bachelor of Science cum laude in linguistics from Georgetown University and a Master of Science in artificial intelligence and computer graphics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Engineering. She also currently serves as the vice-chair of the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange (MITX), the U.S.’s largest Internet advocacy council; as a member of the Executive Committee of the John Adams Innovation Institute; and as a member of the governor’s Mass Tech Hub Collaborative, for which she chairs the communications working group. “Anywhere,” her book on the business impact of global connectivity, was published in January 2010.

As a corporate director she specialized in training, recruiting, strategy and leadership development. During her decade of corporate experience, Mary led programs at Fortune 500 companies including GE, Campbell Soup Company, and Diageo. When considering re-entry into professional work, Mary recognized the need for a customized approach for at-home moms who want to get back to paid employment. Her coaching skills and entrepreneurial spirit led her to launch Comeback Moms based around this powerful force of women. Through research, interviews and practice, Mary developed her program, which helps women leverage the lessons taught by motherhood and apply their own unique passions and strengths to work that truly matters to them. Mary is a true Comeback Mom with a thriving business, a husband and three young children. Maya Luz

Barbara Lynch

Fashion Designer | Project Runway

Chef/Owner | Barbara Lynch Gruppo

Maya Luz captures feminine power through the expansion of internalized vision. Born Maya Luz Molina De Araujo in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she grew up between New York City and New England. Grounded by the roots of her artistic family, Maya was encouraged toward free expression from an early age. She began designing and constructing apparel and accessories in her early teens. Her unique take on design created a quiet storm of DIY enthusiasm. Upon graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, she traveled

to London to assist some of the fashion capital’s forefront designers. Her experience and travel throughout Europe has given this young designer a multifaceted conceptual edge, and she is catching the attention of the most discerning eyes in the industry. Maya currently resides in New York City. Maya Luz is represented by New York showroom, L’Armoire Du Styliste.

Barbara Lynch is regarded as one of the country’s leading chefs and restaurateurs. While growing up in South Boston, Barbara, at the age of 13, got her first kitchen job cooking at a local rectory. It was in high school, however, that an influential home economics teacher and a job working with Chef Mario Bonello at Boston’s esteemed St. Botolph Club piqued her interest in one day becoming a professional chef. In 1998, Barbara opened a restaurant of her own, No. 9 Park, in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood. The restaurant immediately received rave reviews from publications around the country and was named one of the Top 25 New Restaurants in America by Bon Appétit and Best New Restaurant by Food & Wine. Barbara expanded her presence in Boston by opening two restaurants in the South End in 2003: B&G Oysters and The Butcher Shop. Barbara continued to grow her culinary empire by opening three unique concepts in succession: in 2005, Niche Catour, a catering company; Plum Produce in September 2006; and next door, Stir, a demonstration kitchen and cookbook store in 2007.

In fall 2008 Barbara launched two concepts in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood: Drink, a bar dedicated to the craft of the cocktail; and Sportello, Barbara’s modern interpretation of a diner. Her catering company, 9 at Home (formerly Niche Catour), relocated to Fort Point in 2008 as well. In spring 2010 Barbara and her team opened Menton, a fine dining restaurant. Menton has received several accolades, including being named one of the best new restaurants of the year by Bon Appétit, Esquire and GQ. As the CEO of Barbara Lynch Gruppo, Barbara oversees the operations of eight concepts and employs over 200 people. In addition to running her company, each year she dedicates time and resources to a number of philanthropic missions including the Crittenton Women’s Union, Common Threads, The Greater Boston Food Bank, Share our Strength, and several other neighborhood organizations around the city of Boston.

Diane Piette

Quantum Astrophysicist & MacArthur Genius Award Winner | MIT

Attorney | Former Assistant DA for Norfolk County

Nergis Mavalvala is a physicist whose research links the world of quantum mechanics, usually apparent only at the atomic scale, with some of the most powerful, yet elusive, forces in the cosmos. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College in 1990 and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997. She was a postdoctoral fellow and

research scientist at the California Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2002. She joined the physics faculty at MIT in 2002. She is now a professor of physics at MIT, and a recipient of the 2010 MacArthur Fellows Programs Genius Award.

Four months later she landed a full-time sports job at a television station in nearby Beaumont, Texas. She was shooting, writing, editing and delivering her reports covering high school, college and professional sports. It was the beginning of a 15-year career in broadcasting. In the late 1980s she opened her own production company, DCP Productions. She produced, directed, wrote and was talent for a wide variety of projects. Clients ranged from Fortune 500 companies to NBC, Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals, and the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. Diane spent 5 weeks in Seoul, Korea covering the 1988 Olympics for both NBC and KSDK-TV, created pregame shows and specials for the Cardinals and Chiefs, and developed award-winning videos for her corporate clients. She took home two Emmys for her work with the Cardinals and Southwestern Bell Corporation.

In the mid-1990s Diane made the decision to stay at home with her two daughters. Seven years later, when the youngest daughter was about to enter high school, Diane began to explore career options again. So, 23 years after graduating from college, Diane went back to school. Her daughters graduated from high school in 2003 and 2005, and Diane graduated from law school in 2004. With her daughters off to college, Diane began her legal career by clerking for a District Court judge in Minnesota for two years. From January 2007 to 2011, she was an assistant district attorney for Norfolk County. During her four years as a prosecutor she was a member of the Motor Vehicle Homicide Task Force, Head of the District Court White Collar Crime Unit, and General ADA handling all facets of prosecuting from arraignments to jury trials.

Grape is a fruit. Not a flavor.

Whole Concord grapes—skin, seeds and all—give Welch’s its extraordinary antioxidant power. ®

When people learn Welch’s 100% Grape Juice is made from whole Concord grapes, they’re pretty surprised. All those little grapes add up to one healthy juice. And there’s no added sugar, colors or flavors. Because when nature gives you the perfect recipe, you don’t mess with it. To learn more, visit WELCHS.COM.

Made from Concord grapes grown by our family-farmer owners.
