art & media Many of us have seen “Tellonym” links in our friends’ Instagram bios - so, what is it exactly? Explore the history and danger behind this seemingly innocuous app, and learn some tips on how to use it safely.

WHAT IS TELLONYM ? pg 6

WHAT IS

tellonym? // WRITTEN BY RACHEL ADAM // Tellonym was founded by three German university students in early April 2016. Shortly after its initial release, the app gained 700,000 new users, mainly between the ages of 13 and 24. According to a 2019 report by Mashable, the app had skyrocketed in popularity and had 13 million users worldwide, with around 1 million using the app daily. According to the Tellonym website, the point of the app is to hold more “meaningful conversations,” helping people connect better since superficial factors such as “beauty” and “popularity” are hidden from each other. Users are able to set up a public profile, where they can receive anonymous messages, called “Tells” in

their inbox. A “Tell” doesn’t become publicly shown on a person’s profile unless they decide to reply to it. The app encourages people to be honest and speak their minds with the comfort of anonymity behind them. This allows for individuals to speak freely without fear of consequence. . The founder and CEO of Tellonym, Maximilian Rellin, even claims that the app can help people with social anxiety start conversations to increase their emotional vulnerability and openness about who they are, leading to the formation of new (platonic and romantic) relationships. Some teens have gone as far as to launch projects spreading kindness with the platform. The students at Thomas B. Doherty High School, in Colorado Springs, CO, started a Tellonym account dedicated to having a safe space where students can comment compliments about their classmates, uplifting them, and creating a real sense of community. The page was created because “it [can] be hard for someone to talk to someone they like” and to emphasize the importance of “expressing the way

6

However, the anonymity of Tellonym is a double-edged sword - it can embolden people to send cruel and hateful messages to their peers, which they would not do face-to-face. For example, two schools in the Greater Manchester area of England released a statement describing how some messages sent on the app forced local police to intervene. Anonymous reviews on the Apple App Store describe horrifying firsthand accounts of death threats, personal addresses being found, adults messaging teens, sexual harassment, and a toxic environment. Apps similar to Tellonym, such as Ask.fm and Sarahah have even caused teens to commit suicide due to the amount of hate comments they were receiving on a daily basis.

If you do choose to use Tellonym, there are a few safety tips you can follow to make your experience safer and more positive.

tip #1: Consider sharing your Tellonym account with only close, trustworthy friends.

tip #2: Block and report users who make you feel uncomfortable.

tip #3: Don’t put personal information, such as your school, age, and location in your profile.

7

tip #4: Tell a trusted adult immediately if a person is threatening/cyberbullying you.

tip #5: Use the word filter to filter out inappropriate messages.

tip #6: Don’t connect your phone number, real email address, other social media accounts, or contacts to the app.

tip #7: If possible, sign up with a throwaway email that can’t be traced back to you.

tip #8: Set the safety filters in the app to the highest level possible.

tip #9: Make sure to set the “Safety Code” to ensure that no one can change the security settings in your account.

tip #10: Don’t hesitate to delete your account if the app begins to affect your mental health negatively.

CRYPTOCURRE A currency existing only virtually, cryptocurrency is a collection of binary data that works as a fair means of exchange. It is further encrypted using strong cryptography, recording and regulating the creation of additional currency and verifying the transfer of currency ownership. Lacking physical form, these currenciesare neither authorized by a central authority nor are they operated by any banks. These types of currency use decentralized control which works on blockchain technology. Blockchain technology is the root of cryptocurrency, one of the supporting characters in making bitcoin a star. Blockchain is a strong database where information is shared between nodes of a computer, storing the information electronically in one place to form blocks of information. Once the fgdfgfdgfdg

limit of stored information is reached, they are closed and chained with the previous closed block. This forms a chain of data crucial to bitcoin. A key feature of blockchain databases is that the data, once entered cannot be changed; once a transaction is made it cannot be reversed. Cryptocurrency has become popular as a means of digital payments. People traveling hands-free try to avoid the hassle of carrying cash, giving electronic payments and online modes of payment the upper hand. Cryptographic-based currency was first launched in 2009, but attempts were made even before to make an online platform for transactions using a wallet where it is easier to exchange currency. Examples include b-money and bit-gold. They were created but were not fully developed, and that became a stepping stone for bitcoin to come up in 2009 as a new way of exchange and trade. Bitcoin was released to the public, as was the process of mining. Mining is the process from which new bitcoin is issued, and transactions are verified. Soon after it was released, trading took place around 2010. In recent years, according to Forbes, bitcoin has ddfsfssdf

ENCY reached near to the value of $10,000 in 2017. Bitcoin prices declined in 2013 and many who had invested were seen drowning their money, but soon prices were back high, and investing and trading had resumed. As cryptocurrency is solely based on blockchain technology, there comes a few stacks of risky situations where it can be seen that in some cases people have been scammed or the database of one’s bitcoin money got hacked, with this concern many people tend to avoid investing in cryptocurrency, the fake crypto exchange also stays on top lists of crypto risks, many cases of smurfing has also been noticed, but on the contrary, it is equally profitable and can be used in a lot of means of exchange. A very reliable reason to invest in cryptocurrency is it has a long-term store value and no tax imposition is made without the owner's crucial cooperation as it is cryptographic. The future of the decentralized system is not near yet close, since we have gone cash-free these days and are keen to use digital way of transaction so soon enough it can be seen that cryptocurrency would be a new normal some countries have legalized the use of cryptocurrency as a means payment.

Many countries have banned the use of cryptocurrency and have imposed laws on regulating the transfer of cryptocurrency. Certain country’s banks have banned large crypto trading. Other countries can sentence the trader to prison. For example, countries like China have banned the use of cryptocurrency stating that it consumes greenhouse gasses. Russia has also banned the usage of cryptocurrency. How does cryptocurrency work? Since it works on a database, the main input of working electronically is that working takes place on the computer through the blockchain technology. Units of cryptocurrency are issued through mining, and then either you can buy the coins through brokers or cryptocurrency exchange and are stored in crypto wallets. The world has seen drastic changes, some good and some bad. The upcoming generation may be able to have access to digital assets more than we have today. In general words, the new normal might include the usage of cryptocurrency.

THE APP By Harshvir Chahal Edited By Harini Akurathi & For most, the idea that a simple Dominique picture could be worth millions is an Samantha absolute absurdity. After all, what kind of long-term value could that bring anyways? NFTs can be anything from art pieces, video clips, trading cards, music, or even tweets. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, sold his very first tweet saying, “just setting up my twttr,” from 2006 as an NFT, making over $2.9 million. Even the long-standing Nyan Cat GIF had been sold as an NFT. NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, can be called a “phenomenon” that recently garnered attention in mid-late 2021, carrying into 2022. The idea of NFTs is essentially that they’re irreplaceable; they’re too unique to be replaced with anything else. As an asset to be treated as property, it can be difficult to understand why something that has no tangible form seems to be so valuable to many. Comparable to the ageless practice of buying and selling paintings, the ownership of digital images drives what makes NFTs desirable: no matter how many times it's copied, the image is yours.

11

For artists, the appeal lies in the “future” of their art. Originally, once a painting or art piece is bought, it’s generally gone forever and the artist makes zero profit off of it postsale. However, with NFTs, artists can continuously make money off of the buying and selling of their art. This is because of how NFTs inherently work: you buy an NFT, and you can sell it again for the highest bid price. From that price, the original owner of the work can garner a certain amount of the profit made. From a general perspective, the appeal of NFTs is highly debated. To an extent, one can see the value of NFTs

PEAL OF NFTS video as burning and then sold as an NFT reaches levels of incomprehensibly obvious irony. (Criddle, 2021)

outside cryptocurrency. The concept can be reused and implemented to further the popularity and development of Virtual Reality games, which is an exciting premise for many. However, to others, the idea of NFTs is less than impressive. Ownership of intellectual property, already, is moderately controversial. Moreover, the traditional buying and selling of art plays a small role in money laundering, and NFTs make this significantly easier. In early 2021, “Moron” by Banksy was tokenized and sold as an NFT. The print itself was made to criticize the art market. In 2018, another Banky original piece was shredded during an art auction directly after being sold. “Moron”, however, being depicted in a

This is one of many instances where the use of NFTs is unfavorable at its best. At its worst, NFTs amongst other Cryptocurrency leave a detrimental and irredeemable impact on the environment. Very few artists get recognized enough to make a considerable profit off from selling their art as an NFT as well. The main “use” for NFTs is essentially what one could call “digital bragging rights”. Everest Pipkin perfectly describes in an in-depth manner exactly why the current NFT system in place sets us back as a society, and how likely the future of an eco-friendly alternative is. Mixed opinions of the appeal behind NFTs aside, it is undeniable that outside of it being a trend, the future of NFTs in cryptocurrency is most certainly unclear. However, with the mention of VR and implementations outside of the art collection, NFTs can be of use. At any point, one can tokenize the deed to a house or an especially important contract, and propositions of these sorts can be much more appealing.

MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS WOMEN AND GIRLS

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is a movement started in Canada. This movement has been highlighted and spoken about in a lot of references.

The question of “how do you wage war on an object such as illegal drugs?” is easily answered, you wage war on American citizens.

he National Crime Information Centre reported that there were over 5,000 cases of missing women in 2016, most of whom were of Native American descent. However, the US Department of Justice for missing persons reported 116 missing person cases into their log, while the National Center of the national disease reported that murder is the third leading cause of death for Native American women. Despite given evidence and facts, the government and the media don’t allow these women’s families a public platform through which they can come onto and speak for their rights. There are many reasons for this situation to take place, this is a nation damaging crime that is not being talked about. There is one reason which plays a big role behind this situation to take place, the Indian relocation act in which it states that most native Americans and tribal people belonging to different tribes don’t live on the reserved land, most of the people move to bigger cities in order to earn more wages, this leaves the people moving from their hometowns and tribes to get fewer advantages in the urban cities they don't have the rights to any cultural

This brings us to the present of uprising cases of women being lost and murdered. Police are notoriously inactive in addressing cases of missing and murdered indigenous women. The government has sought out a plan to take any action upon the growing genocide as stated by the Canadian government as a remark to the federal government, a budget was made to support these cases, but the NWA (national women’s association) left the government plan stating that it was flawed and was not be sufficient, and was dysfunctional. To understand this flawed plan the budget that was given by the federal government lacked to help the people and the victims. Many family members of victims felt that the government had not felt any of their pain rather just gave money so that the national shame could be hidden from the world. September 11, 2001 is a highly recognizable date for the entirety of this generation. The attack on the Twin Towers by Al-Qaida terrorists left the nation unsteady and the ripple effect it caused was undeniably and seriously impactful, both on Muslim-Americans themselves and on American perspectives. As a result of this attack, many Muslim-Americans have come under attack, facing hate crimes and discrimination. Throughout the years, the Muslim community has faced much hardship. From mosque shootings, hateful graffiti and workplace discrimination, describing the horrors that Islamaphobia can drive is incomprehensibly painful. In Canada alone, anti-Muslim hate crimes reported to police had steadily been increasing since 2001 but spiked in 2016. A similar trend has been observed in the US, driven both by the 9/11 attack as well as the rising issue of education inequality.

In Afghanistan, many Muslim women and girls have also been faced with their hijabs being ripped off of their heads by strangers. Forced to take off their turbans and headscarves, many Sikhs have also faced the repercussions of terrorism. Jagmeet Singh, a Canadian politician and leader of the New Democratic Party, has publicly faced this as well during a 2017 political event , as did his brother, Gurratan Singh, in 2019. Both men are turban-wearing Sikhs in the public eye. Indians, Sikhs, Persian Jews and Arab-Americans have all faced attacks and racist ideals (DesmondHarris, 2016). Even prior to 2001, Islamophobia was still very much present in Western society. Before the term “Islamophobia” spread, the term used was “Orientalism”.

secution as a Terrorism

shvir Chahal Lingampalli, Taruni Manam yna Mehta

The villification of innocent MuslimAmericans has been a long-standing problem (Desmond-Harris, 2016). Many Muslim-Americans today express that public opinion has not changed much since 2001. With the spike of hate crimes coming with Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, the West has been set back significantly in the little progress made over the years. That being said, 20 years after 9/11, many Muslim-Americans continue to experience hostility and discrimination (Alfonseca, 2021). Amongst every other religious group, Muslims are most likely to experience or act on suicidal thoughts, and the contribution of Islamophobia to this is undeniable (Noor-Oshiro, 2021). Despite the title of the article and phrases used throughout, terrorism does not drive racism or islamophobia; people do.

Though 9/11 had impacted the general American view of Muslim-Americans, the action of hate-crimes and acting on prejudice is an American issue for not only Muslim-Americans, but also several other marginalized groups; this is, at its very roots, a Western problem driven by Western ideals. As pointed out by a law professor at the University of Detroit working with UC Berkeley’s Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project, Khaled Beydoun, the Muslim community has been tough-spirited throughout the years. He points out how the events of 9/11 “has forced them to connect with other marginalized communities — encouraged Muslims to bust out of their cocoon and ally over shared values, and that’s a good thing. As a direct result of this sort of hazing, Muslims have been inspired to engage more with American society — more of us have become journalists, comedians, members of Congress. … This response represents a type of American Muslim resilience.” With the solidarity between MuslimAmericans and other marginalized groups standing strong, the tide is progressing for the better. With this solidarity will come activism and unity, and with that we as a newer, younger society will be able to do justice to those hurt by the actions and narrowminded narratives pushed by previous generations. It is unanimously agreed that change and progression come slowly, but surely.

Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dahmer, Ed Gein: intimately known by most crime research junkies (or, “true crime” fans) these are the names of the most wellknown American serial killers. Paul Bernardo, Robert Pickton, Gilbert Paul Jordan: just as horrible as the previously listed American murderers, but less likely to enrage anyone who isn’t from the other half of North America. Canadian serial killers, while less known, have committed horrifying crimes that have been branded into the minds of any Canadian who was alive at the time and serve as a harsh reminder of the failings of law enforcement and society as a whole.

PAUL BERNARDO & KARLA HOMOLKA Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka are a pair of the worst serial killers in Canadian history. Dubbed “The Ken and Barbie Killers” because of their wealth and good looks, the couple is responsible for at least 20 rapes and 3 murders during the early 1990s in Ontario. Bernardo operated alone before he met Homolka as “The Scarborough Rapist”, committing multiple rapes and attempted rapes at a frequent rate before meeting Homolka and operating less frequently. When the two met and became a couple, Bernardo became obsessed with Homolka’s younger sister, Tammy, and Homolka decided to give Tammy’s virginity to Bernardo as a Christmas gift. Tammy ended up choking on her own vomit during the assault. Two more girls were confirmed to have been murdered by the pair, including one who was also dismembered. The girls were tortured and assaulted over several days before being killed. Homolka got a controversial plea deal and currently lives in Quebec, but Bernardo got life in prison.

ROBERT PICKTON Robert Pickton was a killer who operated in the late 1990s to early 2000s and is suspected of killing over 30 women. Pickton was a multimillionaire and pig farmer who lived in a small town in British Columbia. Many of Pickton’s victims were prostitutes who struggled with addiction and were originally reported missing by their families. However, these cases were not investigated until much later on. Pickton often sexually assaulted and tortured his victims before death, then dismembered them and sometimes fed them to his pigs after death. He was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to life in prison, then presented with additional charges in 2010 which he was also convicted of.

solicited Aboriginal prostitutes for sex in a hotel, then drank copious amounts of alcohol with them and, when they passed out, poured alcohol down their throats to kill them. All of his victims died of alcohol poisoning, with blood alcohol content ranging from 0.04 to 0.79 In 1988 he was charged with one manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years, though he was released after 6 years. In 2000 and 2002 he was presented with more charges but only served 15 additional months. He died in 2006. There have been many more serial killers in the history of Canada, but these are three of the most prolific and well-known amongst citizens. The mistakes of the past do not reflect the advancement toward the future, but they are important to recognize and repent.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared a “War on Drugs”, which mainly targeted potent and dangerous drugs. Although the War on Drugs was started under Nixon, it remained a relatively small operation until the election of President Ronald Reagan. The War on Drugs began around fifty years ago and continues to this day, yet is widely considered a failure. In 2011, the Global Commission on Drug Policy came to the conclusion that, “[the] War on Drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world.”.The question of “how do you wage war on an object such as illegal drugs?” is easily answered, you wage war on American citizens. One of the main critiques of the War on Drugs is its racial implications. One of the most notorious pitfalls of the War on Drugs has been its unfair discrimination against people of color, most notably African-American communities. Reagan established mandatory minimum sentencing rules in cases involving illegal drugs. These rules, however, put heavier sentences on cases involving crack cocaine than those involving cocaine. This unfairly targeted African-Americans, as “approximately 80% of crack users were African American, mandatory minimums led to an inequitable increase of incarceration rates for nonviolent Black drug offenders, as well as claims that the War on Drugs

was a racist institution” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Although the rates of overall drug use stay consistent throughout racial demographics, “nearly 80% of people in federal prison and almost 60% of people in state prison for drug offenses are Black or Latino''. The repercussions of this are vast, as punishments for a drug-related offense are more severe than those faced in a court of law, and those convicted still face “policies denying child custody, voting rights, employment, business loans, licensing, student aid, public housing and other public assistance” (Drug Policy Alliance). To summarize, the War on Drugs was supposed to be, in theory, a war on harmful and illegal drugs. The reality is a racially motivated, unsuccessful failure. The majority opinion on the war on drugs seems to be changing as well, with notable artist J.Cole asking for citizens to “reconsider their war on drugs” in his new music video for his single ‘crooked smile’(Frederique 2013). All this is to say that the popular opinion as well as the facts seem to be in agreement, that the War on Drugs has done far more harm than good for Americans.

The founder of Disneyland, Walt Disney, drew inspiration for this endeavor from visits to amusement parks alongside his daughter, specifically to the Griffith Park in Santa Monica. Walt Disney wanted to create a renowned property, notorious all around the world. Initially, he wanted to build the park right beside his studios in Burbank, but to his surprise, the land was too small. After hiring Stanford researchers, he got an idea of how much land he needed to build his proposed project. He then bought 160acres of land, picked his architects by hand, and began working. It was the only Disney property that was built under his supervision. Later, Walt Disney expanded its

property.he world took inspiration from the designs they created. In 1979 a beautiful and elegantly made Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened to the public. The wooden coaster gave a view of wildness. It was inspired by the Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. While the ride gives a joyful experience, it also has other interesting features that were re-structured in the modern period, such as the way they have repainted the structure and added illustrations and reengineered the structure of the railroad. While taking a stroll through Disneyland, the most elegant, mesmerizing design is the New Orleans Square. This attractive landmark was inspired by how the city looked when Walt had started visiting more often. In 1950, Walt wanted to transform a part of Disneyland called Magnolia Park, with the main aim to bring the memories of his trip there with his wife. He wanted to reincorporate the technology of Audio-Animatronics, as these visits to the New Orleans square gave him the idea to invent the audio animatronics technology. In 1960, he found a singing antique bird in a cage. It was an automation that gave a real

The amusement park itself also took spiration from Tivoli Gardens, a theme ark located in Denmark. When Walt ook a trip to Tivoli Gardens in 1950, he ook note of those aspects of the park e enjoyed, applying them to his own roject; 4 years later, the gate where reams come true swung open.

Disneyland also maintains aspects of e Swiss Alps. In 1958, Walt was siting the Matterhorn Mountains and ent a photograph to Art director Vic reene in a postcard and wrote “Build is' '. 6 months afterhis trip , the rilling Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction as complete.

History is embedded into the beloved chitectural structure of the Disney roperties, including the love that went to their construction and continues to el their success. Since the opening of isney’s various parks, restaurants, and sorts, The parks will always hold a ace in our hearts.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO

chakras The Muladhara, or root chakra, depicts our foundation. When it’s in alignment, we feel grounded and secure, both physically and emotionally. A blocked root chakra can manifest as physical issues or emotional issues , by maybe feeling insecure about finances or our basic needs and well-being.

Chakra, a term in Sanskrit guiding to“wheel”, refers to energy points within our body. "Unblocking" our chakras simply refers to the idea that when all of our chakras are open, energy can run through our body freely while harmony exists between the body, mind and spirit. While some say there are 114 distinct chakras, there are actually only seven central chakras that run along our spine. Each of these seven chakras have a corresponding number, name, color, specific area of the spine and health focus.

29

The Swadhisthana, or sacral chakra, informs us on how we relate to our emotions and the emotions of others. Emotionally, this chakra is connected to our feelings of self-worth, and even more specifically, our self-worth around pleasure, sexuality, and creativity. Those with a blocked sacral chakra could feel a lack of control in their lives.

The solar plexus chakra, speaks to your ability to be confident and in control of your life. Those with open solar plexus chakras are free to express their true selves; it’s related to our selfesteem and self-confidence. If your solar plexus chakra is blocked, you might feel an overwhelming amount of shame or self-doubt.

The Anahata, or heart chakra, serves as the bridge between the lower and the upper chakras. As the name suggests, this chakra influences our ability to give and receive love, from both others and ourselves. If someone's heart chakra is open, they can experience deep compassion and empathy, while someone with a blocked heart chakra will have difficulty fully opening up to the individuals in their life.

The Vishuddha, or throat chakra, controls our ability to communicate our personal power. This chakra is connected to our ability to communicate verbally. When it’s open, it allows us to express ourselves truly and clearly. Someone with a blocked throat chakra will feel like they have trouble finding the words to say how they truly feel.

The Anja, or the third-eye chakra, controls our capability to see the big picture and connects to intuition. Those with a blocked third-eye chakra have trouble listening to reality or could even lose touch with their intuition.

The Sahasrara, or crown chakra, the highest chakra, sits at the crown of the head and represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually. It is viewed as the chakra of enlightenment and represents our connection to our life’s purpose. When this chakra is open, it is thought to help keep all the other chakras open and bring the person bliss and peace. Those with a blocked crown chakra may be narrow-minded, skeptical or stubborn. When our chakras are blocked, it may lead to difficulty concentrating, sleeping problems, a lack of motivation and feelings of helplessness, among many other problems. However, there are many easy ways to unblock your chakras yourself and clear these energy pathways, such as: 1. Reciting Mantras 2. Tapping 3. Chakra Meditation 4. Yoga 5. Essential Oils 6. Nutrition 7. Going out into nature 8. Taking deep breaths

Easy breakfast ideas to get your day going with a healthy start!

As we move in with our life, higher expectations creates increasing pressure on teens. This article explores the academic pressure we face.

valentine's wi Valentine’s Day: you either love it or hate it. Your opinion of this romantic day may change with each year, depending on how well (or not-so well) your love-life is going. One year you may be crying tears of joy from how sweet your partner is, while the next you may be … just crying. This heavily-commercialized holiday does not spare those who are single and can lead to bitter feelings of loneliness. But even if you don’t have someone wrapped in your arms during this upcoming holiday, you can celebrate it to the fullest with the one person who deserves the most love in your life yourself! It can be difficult to consciously take time out of your busy schedule to focus solely on yourself and to treat yourself right, but self-love and care is crucial. This Valentine’s Day, give yourself some extra love with these tips that are sure to make your special day - well, special!

33

watch a movie or a show. This may be a staple of your everyday life, but it is still the perfect self-care activity. There is nothing like binging episodes of The Office, consuming them like snacks you can’t resist, or bawling your eyes out to The Notebook. So grab those baked goods from the other tip, pop some popcorn, wrap yourself in a blanket like a burrito, and just enjoy yourself!

read a book! I have been getting into reading more these past few months, and it’s one of the best habits I have built. Reading offers a multitude of benefits, including a general escape from life, an increase in intelligence, and a reduction of stress. Although it may seem counterintuitive, you can read cheesy Rom-Coms! They make your heart flutter and have characters with such strong chemistry you can’t help but root for them. I recommend People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry - it was one of the best books I have read in a while!

spend time with family or friends! Have a fun day with those close to you! Go on a picnic, get a massage, watch the sunset - the possibilities are endless. If you don’t have anyone to do these activities with either, they are just as exciting to do with yourself. Either way, try to get out of the house and enjoy your day.

bake.

This may not be the most cost-effective tip on this list, but if you have some spare change to spend, treat yourself to a box of chocolates! If you have food sensitivities or simply don’t like chocolate (the horror), you can always find a different snack, or buy yourself a bouquet of roses. Whichever route you go, you’ve earned it and you deserve it.

Whether or not you try all of these tips, one of these tips, or none of these tips, what matters is that you are focusing on yourself. Know that you are never alone, even if it may feel that way. Internalizing a statement such as that is much easier said than done - if it were simple, we wouldn’t feel lonely. But no matter how difficult it may be to internalize, and no matter how long it takes you to believe, the statement is true. You are not alone.

#5: Mind games

An overcrowded, cluttered work space can distract you and cause your mind to wander. Organizing your surroundings will help.

There are computerized and physical games that can help you improve focus and concentration, such as sudoku, crossword puzzles, chess and jigsaw puzzles.

Even just 5 minutes of breathing can help you clear your thoughts, especially when you notice you are losing concentration, so that you can be more focused and productive.

#3: Quiet space Finding a quiet space with background noise or even listening to light instrumental music helps you channel our focus into the task at hand.

#4: Switch tasks When one task gets too long or boring, and you find yourself losing focus, try to alternate between tasks to keep it interesting.

The root of such productivity is none other than good time management. Time management refers to the approach of planning out your time and controlling the amount of time spent on specific tasks in order to work more efficiently. The benefits of time management include better habits and greater productivity. PRESSURE Written by: Brooke Huppert & Gunkriti Kaur Edited by: Nitya Baratam, Samita Pandit, Jashan Mehta Layout by: Karen He Across the globe, students, parents, as well as faculty members are sounding the alarm for academic pressure and its harmful impacts on the mental health of those very students. A noteworthy starting point for conversations around mental health and academics is to first find the answer to, “What is academic pressure?” Cristobella Durrette, a journalist at The Cougar, defines it as “an experience in which a student is burdened by the demands of time and energy to achieve specific academic goals. This stress can come from a variety of potential sources and have a myriad of impacts on students both emotionally and academically” (Durrette, 2020).

37

Although definitions are important in discussions regarding the stress students often perceive during the school year, it is important to understand that “academic pressure” is a loose term, representing various concepts for each individual. One example of what students tend to face on a normal school day includes worrying over a future exam to an unhealthy degree of an exhausting workload. "While it may be unhealthy after a certain point, Laura Heidel, an academic counselor at the University of Houston, says academic pressure can be helpful. She explains that “academic pressure can be a positive force, causing the student to want to do well, or it could be a negative force, causing the student to have anxiety while studying, concentration problems or test anxiety” (Durrette, 2020).

Although, in small amounts, pressure can motivate students to succeed, recent trends in the level of stress students face have become increasingly harmful. “Teens reported that their stress levels during the school year far exceeded what they believe to be healthy (5.8 vs. 3.9 on a 10-point scale) and topped adults' average reported stress levels (5.8 for teens vs. 5.1 for adults)” (American Physiological Association).

Unfortunately, elevated levels of stress is not a new discovery as children in the 1980’s had more anxiety than those of child psychiatric patients in the 1950’s (Twenge, 2020). Technology is considered to be affecting the mental stability of teenagers who are studying as it causes unnecessary distractions and is hard to focus on the already added stress in our life. But without technology it is hard to study because since the Covid 19 schools, workplaces, universities are online., Before Covid 19 there was no system of logging in and out of different portals to take in homeworks and assignments from, because we cannot shut the schools off as we have them under a screen. The academic pressure increases and the peers tend to think that staying on technology maybe not be helpful. Studying from home has many disadvantages as distractions can leave you with little time and boundaries cannot be maintained between academics and personal life.

There are different ways to deal with anxiety that come hand in hand with academic pressure; however, not every technique may work for you. For instance, some like to listen to music and go for a walk, whereas others may like to spend some time with friends and then get back to reality. Academic pressure can be quite a lot to handle, especially if your mental health is already disturbed. When it is hard to focus on anything and you feel out of place, try to understand the atmosphere around you and try to relieve the thoughts in your brain. Some ways to relieve your anxiety could be to take scheduled breaks, meditate, clear your space of clutter, and find small things that make you happy.

should students be allowed to have

written by Ashmita Annamalai, edited by Shayna Mehta & Ritika Soni, layout by Helen Bian

Out of the 180 days, I go to school each year, at least 20% of the time I feel so overwhelmed by all the schoolwork that I just want to sit in bed, not finish my work, and not go to school. Sometimes, I do take the day off to take care of myself. However, because the school requires a reason for an absence, I’m often faced with a situation where I have to say that I’m “ill” as an excuse, essentially lying to the school administration. If students were allowed to take at least 10 mental health days off in a school year, or even better, have no restrictions as to the number of mental health days they can have, the stigma and pressure surrounding spending time to take care of one’s mind and body on a school day would diminish.

43

Although homework may pile up and cause additional stress, taking a mental health day will boost a student’s energy, replenish motivation, and allow students to be much more productive than they would have been if they were burnt out. Mental health days do not come with many negative repercussions and they allow students to relax in this world of rush, so why not allow students to take a day off for themselves and further teach them that they should be allowed to put their mental health first?

written by Gunkriti Kaur, edited by Shayna Mehta & Ritika Soni, layout by Helen Bian With the ongoing situation and the crisis the youth of the world has been facing, is somewhat what could not be predicted and that being said, internet crime or cyberbullying may not be a big so-called issue now but a very harmful one since the COVID-19 pandemic has made us stay at home and schools have switched to virtual classes been a very stressful take for students and at times give anxiety to sit in front of the screens which causes some severe issues that unstable the mental health. These days none of us can survive without at least one electronic device, which is an addition to the stress of life, most importantly, the right thing to do when you feel you have reached a place where you socially decline is to take a break which brings us to the topic students are required to have a mental health day.

It is the right thing to do when you are under a lot of pressure from peers and school and can’t find the right path to walk on. It is right to take a break and students should be taking regular intervals and breaks but not neglecting the pressure they are under. Working hard will always come with its own stressful and pressure points. To properly cope with these challenges, it is important for youth to safely be able to express their struggles. Being vocal will allow them to take care of themselves and strengthen the quality of their work without feeling ashamed of themselves.

Should companies work-from-home/rem written By: Gunkriti Kaur Edited by: Geethi Tarra, Ritika Soni

Yes, With the ongoing situation and no prediction of the situation getting better, therefore most companies should provide work from home as the pandemic has worsened and countries have seen worse socio-economic changes and many of us have changed our activities. Many big, multinational companies have started providing the option of working remotely in addition to working in the office and other companies have started working fully from home. The option to work remotely or from home should be available to all workers. As COVID-19 cases rise it seems more appropriate to work from home. Companies like Slack, Twitter, Brex, Google, Spotify, and Inuit have already given out the option to work from home and have revised their policies to make remote work even more enjoyable and maintain productivity.

45

Employees of these companies have shared many remarks as to how they enjoy working remotely and are able to maintain the decorum of work. it is said that working from home comes with a lot of noise and no decorum, but these companies have planned all this in advance and it is likely that many small businesses and offices will also switch to remote work. With COVID-19 cases on the rise, permanent work from home seems like the best option and a pleasant one for employees. Many employers still feel a need to get back to working from offices but with situations like these, the best and foremost way is working from home giving time to family and making memories with the little things found

A Focus on Disabilities

offer permanent mote work options? At this point in time, we’re nearing the two-year mark of COVID-19 barreling into our lives and changing our lives for the foreseeable future. Alongside overall safety and comfort brought on by working from home, it is further important to consider how disabilities play into the importance of remote working options.

For those with physical conditions that make working in person difficult, a remote option can be seen as an accommodation. Rather than working in older, smaller buildings built with no consideration for those using wheelchairs, canes, and prosthetics now also have the option to work from a disability-friendly environment without needing to take into account wheelchair parking, weather conditions, or transportation considerations.

Furthermore, those with mental disabilities are also benefited by remote working options. Neurodivergent folks specifically can greatly benefit from having more control over their work environment. Rather than facing blank office walls, or dealing with sensory-hostile workplaces, workers can take control over their work environments and become more productive and content. This concept, as previously mentioned, also serves as an advantage for neurotypical people.

Privacy is also an important aspect of disability-advocation. As pointed out by Charles Catherine, a blind cane user and an associate director at the National Organization on Disability, disabled people would have more choice in a remote setting. In an interview with CNN, he points out, "Everywhere I go, my cane discloses my disability for me, but if I met someone on the phone, or on Zoom, I choose to disclose my disability or not and people can't tell. If I were interviewing [for a job], I don't know how it would affect the decision on either side. But certainly, I'd have more cards in my hand." (Bohra, 2021)
