what a year! Welcome to ‘The Royal Blue’ for 2017-8. I have so many fond memories of a particularly enjoyable year. What a wonderful year it was! I really hope that you have seen for yourself

time. Perhaps you have seen one of our many performances this year – who could forget ‘Joseph’, or the variety of concerts, and hopefully you were able to attend one of our Sports Days, where once again there were many outstanding performances. The celebrations for our 135th year were also a real highlight, looking back over the incredible history of our school. The two new members of the Senior Leadership Team this year, Mrs Goodwin and Mrs Croydon, really have done a wonderful job in improving standards for the pupils, and it is very pleasing to see them really embracing their new roles.
Our links with parents continue to be a real strength of the school, and I would especially like to thank all who were involved in the CHSA this year. Once again, an incredible amount of money was raised for the school throughout a variety of enjoyable events. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs McMahon and Mrs Dines whose efforts made it all possible. A publication such as this can only ever give a brief insight into school life, but I sincerely hope you enjoy reading this latest copy of ‘The Royal Blue’, and that it gives you a real sense of the special atmosphere and happiness in our school. Many thanks to

Wicked Young Writer Awards Colchester High School are delighted to announce that Maddy (Yr8) was selected as one of the finalists in the Wicked Young Writer Awards 2018 11 – 14 year old category for her piece ‘The Chicken Nugget Story’. This year the Awards received over 4,000 entries, making it one of the most highly contested awards since the competition began, so we are incredibly proud of Maddy. Maddy really enjoyed attending the Award Ceremony and was super excited to hear Cressida Cowell’s enthusiastic talk on the importance of writing. A Top Scoring Third Place in the EES Mathematics Competition by Lauren, Shael, Tanish and Luke On Friday 16th March 2018, we went to the EES for Schools KS2 Mathematics Competition, heat 9. There were four rounds packed with challenging mathematics questions and tricky calculations. All of the rounds were based around Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. The first round we had to do problem solving to work out the table plan. The second round was algebra, we had to solve the calculations to work out safe codes. The third round was more problem solving. The fourth round was geometry. We did well on the first two RHS Campaign for School Gardening

135th Anniversary of the School by Samuel (Y7) Last July and August, the School celebrated its 135th Anniversary. Teachers delved into the archives and students got to hear about School life when Colchester High School was founded in 1882. We celebrated with musical performances and whole school meetings on the playground. There were after school cake sales and chances for students and parents to come in and view school photos from years gone by. The celebration was enjoyed by parents, students and teachers and we would like to thank everyone who were involved in the birthday party. Happy Birthday Colchester High School!

There were activities in all the classrooms to help people get engaged. It was good to see different people talking to and playing with people they had never met. We hope that everyone who came enjoyed the day. As part of Wellbeing Week, Year 5 wrote poems about what kindness was which Mrs Hazell put together to create one poem. We hope it brightens your day: KINDNESS: A poem by Year 5 Kindness is the colour of rainbows, roses, clouds and sunsets. It smells like freshly baked cookies, Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, Blossoming flowers in a field, And warm caramel on a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It tastes like fresh fruit growing in the summer breeze, Hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day, Sugar donuts and candy floss, And juicy strawberries on a hot day. It sounds like flutes playing in the mountains, The melody of a violin, Birds singing in the trees, A butterflies’ whispering wings, And unicorns gliding. It looks like first flowers blooming, A loving heart, New friends meeting and old friends reuniting, A puff of magical star dust, And a fairy garden. Year 3 & 4 Globe Trip Our Year 3 and 4 pupils as part of their Shakespeare studies were fortunate enough to enjoy a guided tour of the Globe theatre and an actor led performance workshop.
Extreme Reading Competition All the Lower School pupils were invited to take part in an “Extreme Reading” competition, where they had to bring in a photograph of themselves reading a book in an unusual place or doing an unusual activity whilst reading. The winners of the competition were Noah, Joel, Josh, Toby and Poppy.
