The Strings Club was founded in 2012 by professional violinist and teacher, Amy Cunningham, with the aim to offer primary school children an opportunity to engage with music in a rewarding and exciting way. Having trained as a violinist at The University of Birmingham and University of London, Amy worked with numerous music services across London and the Midlands teaching over 250 children per week. Through years of first hand experience, Amy developed an acute awareness of the needs of a school and each of its pupils – a perspective that informs every aspect of what The Strings Club provides. It is this ethos, coupled with our innovative approach to music education, that led The Strings Club to be recognised within the industry as finalists for the ‘Best Musical Initiative’ at the 2014 Music Education Awards by Professor Barry Ife (Principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama) and Richard Hallam MBE (Chair of the Music Education Council).

Whole Class Instrumental Tuition Programmes Whole Class Instrumental Teaching is a core requirement of the 2011 ‘National Plan for Music Education’ and our programmes present four of the core aims.* • Opportunity to Learn an Instrument
Every primary age child has the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument through whole-class ensemble teaching programmes for ideally a year
• Instrument Loan Service
Each child will be loaned an instrument which, after careful preparation and training, they will be able to take home for practice. The cost of hiring an instrument is £1.50 per week, per pupil.
• Performance Opportunities
As performance is a key element of the programme, opportunities to perform to the school and parents in assemblies and concerts are important and we work with you to develop and arrange these.
• Progression is Key
Progression remains at the heart of our whole class instrumental programmes. We aim for at least 30% of each class to continue their learning through small group tuition with us. We strongly believe that all children should be encouraged to continue - not just those who demonstrate an aptitude for playing or a keen interest in learning - and that’s why we offer our lessons from only £4 per week.
Our Strings Club teacher works in close partnership with the class teacher to deliver a lesson of c.45-60mins in which a whole class of pupils will be encouraged to develop their instrumental playing skills every week through our engaging and dynamic lessons. Each session involves a variety of linked activities to ensure each individual reaches their musical potential, including singing, composition, improvisation, and our unique and interactive Musicianship Matters sessions which cover the ‘nuts and bolts’ of music theory. Each programme offers pupils opportunities for learning about music and learning through music across the primary curriculum. See page 11 for a detailed description on how our programmes work alongside National Curriculum Core Areas of Learning both in EYFS and Key Stage 1 and 2.

Small Group Tuition Learning within a small group offers so many benefits for primary aged children including ensemble playing skills, listening, developing self-confidence, teamwork and focus, to name a few. Our small group tuition is also an ideal progression for those pupils who have shown particular interest and talent during their whole class instrumental tuition, as outlined in the National Plan for Music Education. Pupils taught in a small group (2-6 children) may also enter for assessments including Music Medals and ABRSM Grade exams, giving them something worthwhile to practice towards. Learning in a small group has proven to work well alongside a school’s timetable as well as providing a cost-effective option at only £4 per child, per lesson.
After-School Clubs Our after school clubs offer your pupils all the benefits of our quality instrumental programmes, keeping them inspired right up until pick up time and require minimal organisation or commitment by you or your teachers. All we need is a spacious room and some eager participants! Each weekly after-school club includes our carefully-crafted lesson plans, packed full of interactive and inspiring ways of learning.

Classroom Workshops Catering for all pupils from Reception to Year 6, our popular classroom workshops are carefully created to engage and stimulate your pupils, providing a new and exciting look at a variety of music-based topics. Subjects to be covered can range from anything from ‘Meet The Composer’ (any composer of your choice) to ‘The Science of Strings’ to individual instruments including violin, guitar, cello and ukulele. Music Medals We’re incredibly proud to be partners with Music Medals, a fantastic award scheme run by The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Whereas typically it might take over a year for a beginner to reach Grade 1, Music Medals can be achieved every term – giving something really worthwhile for your pupils to practice towards and a way of celebrating their skills right from the offset. Starting with Copper and moving up progressively to a Platinum (equivalent to a GCSE A* on the National Qualifications Framework and equivalent to Grade 4 standard), Music Medals celebrate the skills your pupils have learnt and give them something worthwhile to work towards. We encourage all schools to award pupils their Music Medals certificates within assembly or a special concert - the perfect way to celebrate your pupils’ achievements.

Staff profiles Alexandra Reisinger Alexandra was first introduced to guitar when she was nine years old. Alexandra studied Elementary Music Education at the Conservatory Vienna University, with a primary focus on guitar. She is currently studying an MA in Applied Theatre at Goldsmiths College, The University of London. Alexandra performs as a solo guitarist across London and loves to teach for The Strings Club What’s your favourite things about teaching? “I think the best things about teaching is when you as a teacher are able to spark a love of music in children!”
Simon Matthews Simon Matthews has been playing and performing on the electric and acoustic guitar for over 11 years. He has performed across the UK, abroad and on cruise ships. He is an experienced guitar tutor who has taught guitar to a wide range of ages and abilities. His experience also includes teaching guitar as a freelance guitar tutor as well as teaching guitar in schools and community centres. Simon graduated in 2011 from the London College of Music as a Bachelor of Music (Hons) studying guitar and popular music performance. What’s your most enjoyable teaching moment so far? “Teaching whole class music to a challenging group, then seeing them progress to the end of the year into great musicians.”
Lauren Mather Lauren Mather read music at the University of Birmingham prior to studying viola at Birmingham Conservatoire with Robin Ireland (Lindsay Quartet). During her studies, she was awarded a place on the prestigious CBSO (City Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) Orchestral Training Scheme. Alongside teaching, Lauren works as a freelance musician, regularly performing with a variety of orchestras and her string quartet.
