PAASA: A Cyclical Mourn of Discontentment REALITY BITES JANZ M. SAMPATON
― .‖ This particular election slogan bombarded all sorts of media during the 2016 Presidential Elections. It symbolizes the strength of a renewed leadership that the team of the presumptive president is continually boasting. Unknowingly, the word ―change‖ came long before as it became the usual mantra of every politician in whatever position they are running for. ―I will give you a road, a bridge, free education, health care, and everything beyond my opponents could give‖, this is
what in all the crafted speeches of the aspirants. The same scenery of the Philippines at the present brings me into what happened about six years ago; when the same people marched to support the successor of the previous administration carrying his late mother‘s fame which became his ticket to office. I could hardly remember his deeds as he assumed the Presidency. He bragged that his administration would live in frugality. He even had pictures of him eating in ordinary burger stands during his state visits in the United States; that he was taking economy flights during his travels, but no one really knew if this was sustained until the end his term or was it just a brink at the start and was lost at the middle. On the other hand, I could say that he did really make change. His administration widened the Pantawid
Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P‘s) to which the ―indigent‖ people enjoy the laxity of receiving cash incentives on a monthly basis. He garnered plenty of infrastructure projects through Private Public Partnership (PPP) which gave the private sector a share in the development of the country. He strengthened Emergency Response to Calamities and Natural Disasters, and he had jailed several corrupt officials. Enumerating these facts, I ask you a question: Were you contented on what he did during his six year term? Entwined with all the good deeds are controversies. Upon the second month of fulfilling his duties, he was demoralized because of a hostage drama; he was then scorned with constitutional violations cont. to p18

Filipinos to achieve change -- not only on our economic and societal status but moreover on the system of our government. We have viewed almost all politicians, especially the President, to be either incompetent, ineffective or corrupt. But we have overlooked the fact that the way we define our leaders also shows how we define ourselves. Our government has evolved significantly from hierarchy to religious and sectorial until such time we have gained our independence and have established a democratic system. We have learned lessons from the past that are noteworthy which have influence the creation of our very own constitution that serves as the backbone of our standing as a nation. The democratic form of government is seen to be the highest setup of governmental system as the people have the choice to elect the leaders they want and the same power to have the latter impeached from their positions. This right has in itself granted us one of the biggest power to make a change and also a great responsibility in helping achieving the same. But there are still some of us that do not exercise this as one of their human rights and these people are also those who clamor the loudest when hard times arrive, which begs the question, ―Why vote?‖ Questions like, ―What would it benefit me if I vote?‖, ―What do I get if I vote?‖, and ―Would my vote matter among the millions of votes and voters there are?‖ are just some of the reasons why we don‘t progress as a nation. When you come to think of it, the benefits of voting are not plainly seen but would be very evident during times that we are dire need of help, change, equality, and progress. Taking for example the number of young people who are registered votes, we comprise the majority of the entire voting population. On the latest account, the highest number of voters comes from the age bracket of 20-25 years old. This is usually composed by the college students, fresh college graduates, and young professionals who are among those who have the greatest needs and at the same time the greatest contribution to our nation‘s economy, workforce and human resource. We were once free but not later we lost that freedom. Our ancestors have unceasingly strived to gain back our freedom. Lives have been lost, blood have been spilled. Your right to vote is not just a simple rule printed on a piece of paper but it is a right written in blood. In our aim to witness and experience change, your vote is a crucial factor. Not only that it would decide the fate of your locality in the next three years or our nation in general for the next six years, it will also at some point define our nationalism, patriotism and responsibility as a Filipino. Moreover, our responsibility is not limited to ourselves only but it encompasses our family, community, and fellowmen. For only when we do what we have never done will we have what we never had. Tinatago ang Taba? SHADES & SHADOWS JEMUEL B. GARCIA III
― , matter expand when subjected to high temperature. Therefore, I am not fat, I am hot.‖ A joke which I came across when I was browsing through my Facebook news feed. Funny it may seem but obesity is not a simple issue. Multimedia has brought about as many advantages as it has not. The ―idiot box‖ itself has brainwashed us with concepts such as what the ideal body must be (those with bulging abs, biceps, and slim waist lines),
opinion that achieving the latter requires 70 percent diet and 30 percent exercise (which is not that much applicable nowadays), that fast food is better than slow, home-cooked meals (yes, and take note that fast food is literally fast because it shortens your life expectancy), that drinking a certain fruit juice drink will make you slim instantly (only to know that there is a requirement for proper exercise and diet), and so much more. These ideas have somewhat created a new division in our brains that at some, if not most of the time, tells us to judge people who are unusually larger for their age level. But doing such is not helping. Fat shaming as what it is commonly known, is an appalling act. In fact, telling someone that he/she is fat especially in a mean manner will not motivate him/her to lose weight. It may lead to depression and make overweight people to gain more
weight and cause serious mental problems. Fat shaming, as with smart shaming, has been a trending topic in social media for quite a while. It has been as if we were born in a world full of standards – that you must walk like, talk like that, eat this and not that, wear this and look like how everybody looks. Visual stimuli has its deep psychological effects. Have you ever wondered why only sexy men and masculine men endorse undergarments? Recently, brands and endorsers have (or may have) come to think about including plus sizes models in the group of people endorsing clothes. But as of the moment, only women are seen on some brochures. How about plus size men? Are they not capable of doing modeling or is it because, again, it is not directly acceptable for the general public?

They answered that they cannot see any problem with it and even asked me to show and explain to the guards the right rules. To make this long story short, I followed their words and comply with what was given. But my fight for the unrequited didn‘t cave in; more questions had sprouted, like my mind had been an instant breeding field of issues, waiting for its mate. Then there comes this light bulb moment, now we have this light bulb moment that ossifies towards a resolution and we have this light bulb that seeks to light up a series of new light bulbs, I had the later light bulb moment—pity on my soul. Queries arose, but one really made a catch, ―What are the moral and academic basis of the rule?‖ cont. to p18

Like duh, I have been living all of my life with it, and one way or another, I had went with any hairstyle and even dyed it brown at one rebel times of yore. I was then entering our university; applause for the new system that confuses me even months after that entrance/exit system was adapted, relate anyone? As I was saying, I had just then entered our university with my good friend, Jimmy (We have just our lunch then), when a security guard had called my attention and asks me

astonishment (and bafflement) I had just replied with an okay and went to the rest of my day‘s rendezvous. But that encounter really bothered me and somehow, to be honest, wounded my pride. What‘s wrong with my hair anyways? I had been passing those gates for like two years now and never had I ever encountered such incidence, not ‗till that day. To answer my troubled soul, I had decided to ask our Guidance Counselor to ask a certain question that had really bothered me. What is the basis of a ―proper‖ haircut? I had then received an answer via the lost and the late student handbook. The basis according to it, of a ―proper‖ haircut for men is: it

The school‘s practically a place of oppression. And for the lacking part, does anyone need to state that? The school‘s lacking the proper trappings of a school. It also discourages uniqueness and self-expression. The school, quite frankly, is a sad place. It won‘t be ready for anything until it wakes up from its dreams of the second world war. @RemingtonTheMermaid Just imagine hosting a program with international exchange students, tapos biglang umulan. Does coloring my hair (with any color that I want) equates to me being, let‘s say radical? Isn‘t that too stereotypical? Let us not be so shallow to propagate such nonsense idea. Why nonsense? Simply because it does not lead towards something productive. First and foremost, we are not a military university. Second, this rule only teaches students, the future professionals, to judge their co students based on their hair or even physical structures, beyond

suddenly he was called a good-fornothing president. Tracking back the history of Philippine politics, I found it very ironic that such sequence of events has become perennial among all the past presidents of the republic. The fact that the spirit of activism against the elected authority also rises among the people who voted for them makes me laugh at the back of my head. This also makes me feel a sense of irresponsibility for pinpointing to others their own flaws. Having said this, I remembered what my history professor told us during one of our classes, ―With the attitude of the Filipino people towards the government, there is no doubt that a tyrannical type of leader is fitted to govern us‖. Indeed, what
she presumed happened. Today, we are facing a new chapter of leadership and responsibility, not only for those who are elected, but also for the electorate. I hope that one day, these politicians and officials will still be standing in the same grounds where you are standing today, and never shall you revolt against the people you have chosen, that I shall never hear a word like PAASA as a sign of discontentment to what other people can give, and I will not see the same people on the streets crying for injustice. I hope that the cyclical history shall not repeat itself. As they say, ―Parang pag-ibig lang yan. Pinili mo kaya dapat mong panindigan.‖
personality and aptitude. Lastly, we are not, as what my other friend said, a cookie cutter school that seeks uniformity and for those that do not resemble the cutter‘s contour, they will find ways, by drag or by tow. At most times, we must develop a community that has great respect to personal freedom of choice and individuality. A campus culture that values all the colors at any given hue and not only the blacks and the whites. The world is no place for people who follow the crowd. Why would we teach our student to fit in, if what we are aiming for is for our students to standout? I had read onetime that the best way to educate a youth is when he is at his comfortable whole-being. Tantamount to this is when you let a
person be what he would like to be, with limitation only when he is causing any harm towards others. I have never seen any hairstyle that hurt,, humiliated, or killed someone— except, I guess, during tricycle rides when a woman forgets to tie her hair. I do not wish to question directly the administration that builds the rule; I somehow see their grounds for building it. I only want to deliver a message that, hey, time changes, the rule is outdated. We must not contain ourselves on laws that only creates skin-deep solutions, let us converge our effort on building laws that aids student to develop the best of who they are—at any given hairstyle. This actually reminds me, I need to buy fresh hair clay. Yes, I love my hair, don‘t we all?

MDRRMC Kalibo: Calamity-Ready BY JOHN PAUL DOMINIC BAYLOSIS
Aklan hails Multi-Million Kalibo-Numancia Bridge BY PEARL ROSE ANNE TALAM
2015 GAWAD KALASAG Best Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) in Region VI conducted a free earthquake and flood drills in the different schools within Kalibo and implemented the Aklan local flood Early Warning System by installing the Civil Defense Siren. The council is led by Chairman Mayor William Lachica with Terence June Toriano, Civil Defense Officer II and is composed of 16 volunteers and administrative aids. They are continually training new volunteers with the support of 611th Philippine Coast Guard Auxillary Squadron, Philippine Red Cross, Bureau of Fire, Aklanon Nurses and Medics and Responsible Citizens Action Group (RECAG). According to Mr. Allan Francisco (one of the administrative aids), their
office has adequate equipment: rescue ropes, helmets, life vests, megaphones, rescue ropes, radios and first aid kits; added to that, their officers are always ready in 24 hours of the day. He also demonstrated the process of tracking dangers in the Aklan River by analyzing statistical data of the project Noah given by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). MDRRMC also finished the construction of 2 classroom-sized evacuation centers at the front of the Kalibo Municipal Building beside the MDRRMC. The MDRRMC is also calling out for schools in Kalibo that are willing to have a flood and earthquake drill by just sending a request letter to their office that is addressed to the chairman and civil defense of the council.
DPWH Develops Province of Aklan BY JOHN PAUL DOMINIC BAYLOSIS
THE DEPARTMENT of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) allocated almost PHP 933 million for the development of infrastructures in Aklan. The prospected projects include the concreting and widening of national, barangay and farm-tomarket roads in Kalibo, opening of Kalibo circumferential road, the construction and rehabilitation of flood control facilities along Aklan river basin, and the construction of the new Kalibo Bridge 2 along with
the rehabilitation of the old Kalibo Bridge. The core project this year is the construction of the 450-linear meter Kalibo Bridge 2 which was started last year and was finished this July, 2015. The PHP 370 million-bridge has a dimension of 7.32 meter for its width and covers 15 spans measuring 30 meters each with sidewalks, concrete deck surface, street lightings, and a baluster type concrete railing.
A NEW TESTAMENT of Aklan‘s booming economy has now risen as the multi-million Kalibo-Numancia was constructed This project which approximately costs about P370 million, is a 450 meter linear bridge running parallel to the north of the old existing bridge. This will be a two-lane thoroughfare measuring 30 meters each with a width of 7.32 meters and a baluster type concrete railings. It is also elevated higher than the old bridge in anticipation of a strong current of floods during typhoons. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Director Ediberto Tayao assured Aklanons that the project will be completed by the end of the year.
OLD AND NEW. The old Kalibo-Numancia Bridge (lower) runs along the newer version (elevated) of the same. The height adjustment is due to the susceptibility to flooding of the location. (ASU-CIT PUB PHOTO/Jemuel Garcia III)
This project along with other public constructions is headed by Regional Director Edilberto D. Tayao of Region VI with Engr. Noel Fuentebella who heads the DPWH Aklan-District Engineering Office. When the projects will be completed, these will provide a reliable and comfortable travel to everyone from the capital town of Kalibo to any point of Aklan.

Titans reaps grandslam champ in ASU-CIT Dancesport Competition 2015 BY JANZ M. SAMPATON
THE TITANS TEAM rejoiced as they once again received a grand slam championship in the recently concluded Dancesport Competition 2015 conducted last September 10 of this year at the Aklan State UniversityCollege of Industrial Technology (ASU-CIT) Quadrangle. Eleven couples coming from five teams competed to gain places in two categories; seven of whom are for the Latin American Category, and the remaining four fought in the Modern Standard Category. The competition‘s modified elimination process was convened in two heats with five dances on each category. One dance genre for each category, specifically Paso Doble for Latin American, and Viennese Waltz for the Modern Standard were added to the previous dance lineup of last year‘s competition. During the first heat, the couples
seemingly gave their all in terms of execution, floor craft, and projection for both categories but only five from the Latin American Category, and three from the Modern Standard Category qualified for the final heat. Stamina in sustaining their togetherness and drive was ultimately the biggest challenge of each couple in the second heat. The top two contenders of each category became the official participants of ASU-CIT in the Intercampus Competition held last September 28, 2015, wherein Mr. Laurente and Ms. Sual followed by Mr. Casio and Ms. Sorrosa won the top two spots of the Modern Standard Category. Moreover, Mr. Gabinete & Ms. Inamarga came second in the Latin American Category followed by Mr. Malandog and Ms. Mirasol on the third place.
AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY - College of Industrial Technology included Charcoal Rendering and On-the-Spot Painting Contest to this year‘s Literary and Cultural contest which started last September 7, 2015. Five contenders joined in the charcoal rendering contest while three participated in on-the-spot painting contest. Titans Team bagged all the awards in Charcoal Rendering namely: Alvin N. Sabiaga (1st Place), Mark Vincent Palanog (2nd Place) and Danny I. Laganzo (3rd Place). Likewise, the said team also won two out of three awards in On-theSpot Painting Contest which casted the following results: Mark D. Gumbok (1st Place), Julius R. Antonio (2nd Place), and Mark Leonard B. Peren (3rd Place). The champions (first placers) competed in the intercampus held last September 28, 2015.
