The Vision Council’s Lab Division Update The Vision Council’s Lab Division has set up two new initiatives – a Human Resources Taskforce and an update of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Compliance of Chemical Management/Hazard Communication program – as well as the release of an updated Electronic Progressive Identifier Catalog.

Human Resources (HR) Taskforce In recent years, there has been an increased focus on the need for employees of all companies to fully understand the legal and ethical obligations plus the responsibilities of their company to ensure safe, inclusive and compliant work environments framed by the highest ethical and committed organizational leadership. The goal of the HR taskforce is to create open communication about these issues and make recommendations for Lab Division member companies – and others – to develop good business practices. The taskforce is comprised of HR professionals from several member companies. The taskforce’s members held a conference call recently to outline topics that they will create memos for in coming months. The memo topics are as follows: • Health care cost management • Recruitment and employee retention when unemployment is at an all-time low • Employee handbooks - what information is essential to include, how to develop an outline, career and professional development paths • Contemporary performance management tools and employee coaching • Compliance topics in an ever-changing legal environment • Full-time employee vs. independent contractor standards by state and under federal law • Workplace diversity • Workplace harassment • Respect for co-workers • Transparency in the workplace The memos will be shared with the Lab Division’s membership as they are completed.

Chemical Management/Hazard Communication Program The Lab Division has contracted with Roger Arrowood, retired health and safety leader at Essilor Group, to update the Chemical Management Handbook. Intended to be released section by section, the handbook with cover the below subjects: • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 300 log • Hazard communication (HazCom) • Lockout/tagout • Emergency action plan • Personal protective equipment (PPE) • Chemical Management Manual update

Electronic Progressive Lens Catalog (EPIC) For many years the Lab Division produced the Progressive Lens Identifier Catalog, which provided information on the various laser-engraved progressive lens markings, every other year. This was a very popular resource for both the Lab Division members and their retail customers; however, it presented challenges including cost and timeliness. Upon printing, the catalog became immediately out of date as new styles were already being released and it was a high cost project. In early 2017, The Vision Council’s Lens Processing & Technology Liaison Paul Wade led the project to transition the catalog – now named EPIC – from a printed booklet to an electronic resource, allowing members to update their progressive lenses in real time, giving eyecare providers up-to-date information. By transitioning the catalog to an electronic database, The Vision Council is saving thousands of dollars in printing, production and fulfillment costs, while providing users with an easy-touse and timely resource. To date, the catalog has more than 12,000 visits from nearly 2,500 total users. To view EPIC, please visit epic.thevisioncouncil.org. We encourage you to share the link with your eyecare providers. If you’d like to add your lenses to the catalog, please contact Paul Wade at pwade@ thevisioncouncil.org. Please note, only The Vision Council’s members can post their private label lenses.

Patented New Rimless Technology The Seemless collection uses a unique wide oval shape plug with horizontal & vertical grooves on it’s surface. When used with the patented bonding agent, the lens and the frame fuse together. The strong adhesive acts as a buer between the lens and the plug virtually eliminating the stress in the lenses. This reduction of stress prevents cracking and loosening of the lens for the life of the Seemless frame.

DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

OPTIONS

Advances in digital technology have improved the way we work, learn, shop, socialize or simply enjoy entertainment. The downside is that increased use of digital devices on a daily basis, is wreaking havoc on patients’ visual comfort.

To reduce digital eyestrain, the most logical step is to reduce the time spent using digital devices. However, in today’s connected, fast-paced digital environment, that is not an option.

Modernizing The KODAK Unique™ Lens Design Kodak PowerUp Lenses include a built-in power boost in the near viewing area to assist younger patients 25 to 40 years of age that are not ready for progressive or computer lens designs.

» 65% of American adults reported having symptoms of digital eye strain 1 » More than 83% of Americans report using digital devices for 2+ hours/day 1 Besides the near accommodative burden on the eye muscles, glare and blue light emissions from device screens add further stress on our vision.

TWO BOOST LEVELS Kodak PowerUp Lens simplifies dispensing by offering two levels of powering up the reading area.

» LOW POWER = +0.40D boost » MORE POWER = +0.66D boost
