HOMECOMING:
Before their numerous awards, Lady Antebellum performed at last year’s Homecoming concert
Homecoming is a long honored tradition at APSU. Student organizations participate in several events throughout the week in order to earn points towards the Wyatt Award, which is the overall winner of Homecoming. Some of last year’s events were a banner contest, step off, chili cook off, AP Apollo and float contest. During the week, there is
also a concert and Lady Antebellum performed before they won their numerous music awards later in the year. At the Homecoming football game, the Homecoming King and Queen are announced. This year’s Homecoming theme and concert artist has not been announced.
Judy Shepard Judy Shepard spoke about ‘unity’
At this years annual Unity Celebration, equal rights activist Judy Shepard was the featured speaker. Judy Shepard’s son, Matthew, was murdered 11 years ago because he was gay. Recently, Judy Shepard joined President Barak Obama in the signing ceremony of The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which protects individuals from violence based on the sexual orientation and identification. The weekend before Shepard came to campus, Westboro Baptist Church had APSU down on their website to picket. Students quick found out and organized a counter protest against Westboro. The night of the event APSU students, faculty, staff, community members and visitors from other schools rallied in front of APSU at the intersection of College Street and University Avenue in support of Shepard’s visit. Westboro did not show.
