Cliff Burtt
This body of work spans over 30 years of my art practice, selected are pieces that deal directly with the built world- those parts of our environs that could not exist without human effort and intervention. This constructed world exists not only in physical form; our concepts, symbols and language are all human artefacts and aspects of our attempts to understand and shape our existence.
The modestly scaled sculptures in this exhibition are my attempt to reflect the manifold ways in which we might understand domestic, civil and industrial structures, ranging from generic suburban scenes to an Amish barn to an oil field pump. Some of these pieces are the distillation of travel and direct observation, aided by drawings and photographs; at other times, reflections on the shifting meaning of certain deliberately symbolic edifices.
Both approaches are combined in a number of works, such as Facade, completed while I was living in Washington DC and employed as an art installation contractor at the Federal Reserve, at the very moment the global financial crisis was unfolding. The meaning of most pieces are somewhat less determined and will shift with time, reflecting the interplay between the concrete object and its possible readings.
