Ancient Stone - Redrawn

1 - 30 March 2025

David Jensz

My practice explores the mutable nature of matter, from the vast timescales of geology to the fluid boundaries of particles at a quantum level. The sculpture and large-scale graphite drawings investigate the interplay between structure and dissolution, permanence and impermanence.

The sculptures engage with deep time, using rocks and recycled materials to examine the relationship between natural and human-made structures. Rocks, shaped over millennia, bear the weight of geological transformation—not only as remnants of deep history but as the very foundations from which life emerged. The minerals within stone gave rise to the earliest forms of life, linking the inert with the living in an unbroken continuum of change. Recycled metals, materials of industry and settlement, carry the marks of human history and decay. By manipulating these elements, I bridge the ancient with the contemporary, highlighting the tensions between endurance and erosion, control and entropy.

The large-scale graphite drawings evoke the unseen forces at the smallest scales of existence. Graphite — composed of carbon, the fundamental element of life and the cosmos — becomes both medium and subject. The layered mark-making suggests the shifting nature of sub-atomic particles, where form is fluid, boundaries dissolve, and existence is a matter of probability.

Through the physicality of sculpture and the dynamic shifts of graphite on paper, my work reveals the interconnections between time, matter, and perception. By embracing uncertainty and flux, I invite contemplation of the invisible forces that shape both our world and our understanding of it.
