Vessels Bloom By Charlie
Ryan
WORDS
Inspired by his mother’s own ritual of picking and collecting flowers and foliage from her daily walks, Charlie Ryan paints a celebration of each day’s harvest.
A collection of both impressionist and abstract works portraying an interpretation of selected flowers, and “vessels” from Charlie’s own home and a neighbourhood in Red Hill.
“We ourselves are all vessels of memory, as can be the things we keep and grow. This collection is the distillation of memories within memories. Of kindred, human connections engrained deep within objects of sentimental value.” Article in Morn Pen Magazine, March 2025
Memories within Memories
There would be a dramatic and sudden decrease in the quantity of flowers found in artist Charlie Ryan’s Red Hill garden when his mother, Susan, would come to stay.
“Mum has always loved the daily ritual of walks outside and picking flowers and foliage from wherever her wanderings have taken her,” said Charlie. “And each afternoon the house would be filled with the colours and scents of that day’s bounty.”
The artist cheerily admits that he would always have a pair of secateurs, some rubber bands and crumpled-up plastic bags on standby for her visits.
When the COVID-19 lockdowns hit Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula in 2020, Susan stayed for longer. Running his design business, Five Creative, from his kitchen table, Charlie fondly recalls how he very quickly ran out of vases and turned to finding new “vessels” such as his coffee plunger, cups, and glass jars to hold his mother’s growing collection of daily floral arrangements.
These cherished memories and Susan’s own daily ritual of celebrating each day’s harvest, have become the inspiration behind Charlie’s latest series of painted works and upcoming exhibition at & Gallery Australia in Sorrento.
Titled ‘Vessels Bloom’, the collection includes a unique series of beautiful compositions of both impressionist and abstract works portraying an interpretation of selected flowers, and “vessels” from Charlie’s own home.
“We ourselves are all vessels of memory, as can be the things we keep and grow” Charlie said. “This collection is the distillation of memories within memories. Of kindred, human connections engrained deep within objects of sentimental value.”

Artist - C.V.
Charlie Ryan’s work entwines the unbounded connections between nature, selfhood, kinship, and community. Predominantly working in the realms of formed natural abstracts and impressionist works, the artist has a partiality towards sharing stories through the metaphors of nature and the harvest of the seasons.
Born 1984 in Melbourne, Australia (Wurundjeri, Kulin Nation), Ryan currently lives and works in the hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula (Bunurong / Boon Wurrung Country). A lifetime artist and creative, he was guided at a young age by his father and fellow artist, Gee (Gerald) Ryan, who introduced him to a variety of painting styles, along with a distinct appreciation and love of colour. He studied at the renowned Brighton Bay Art, Design and Photography Program in Melbourne, followed by the Arts Academy at the University of Ballarat. Ryan has been involved in a number of solo and group exhibitions, with his works held in private collections in Australia and internationally.
