This is the third solo show I have created about the circle. The first was Sheild in 1993 and then Truths Of Masculinity in 1996/98.
Made over a 12-year period I chose these eight works for this exhibition as the sign/symbol of infinity and while none of the works in Infin-eight actually resemble the shape of the circle it is the closed loop forms from which philosophies about connectedness and the cyclical nature of existence can be viewed.
I have been using pipe in my work for 38 years and right from the beginning I saw it as the conduit that represents the hidden flow of water in the Earth, the built world and in our bodies, invisible flow not seen but understood representing to me our connection to each other, the natural world and ultimately becoming a long meditation into mortality and the transformation of matter and energy into other forms.
The physical stuff of pipe has inspired me too, as all metals on the planet were formed in the heart of a sun going supernova. The full-size versions of Abundance and Transference were made in Aluminium the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, cast iron, steel, stainless steel are to me incredibly beautiful materials and a sign of this universe(al) connection
The drawing in space of these 8 works can be viewed in many ways but it is ultimately up to the viewer to decide.
For me their meaning is never fixed and over time it has manifested as purely abstract or an essay on life’s interactions, paths that cross over and those that don’t, chance meetings and partings, synaptic pathways to precious memories, or massive tectonic and elemental forces, pipes of molten metal and rock flowing through the Earth, a solar flare or a Nebula.
Making art is a privilege, an honour and an emotional rollercoaster all at the same time, but what a ride.
