The Salon

The Salon is our visible stockroom which showcases emerging, mid career and senior artists from around Australia and internationally. With over 150 diverse works on show at anytime there is always something for everyone to take home today or with free delivery and installation within Victoria. The term Salon originates from 1667, and refers to the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture showing the artwork of the Academies students, in order to fit everything in the paintings were hung as tightly as possible from floor to ceiling. In 1725, the exhibition moved to the Salon Carre (Square Salon) of the royal palace known as the Louvre, and from that point on was known as simply “The Salon”. & Gallery is proud to continue this tradition.

Inspired by the ancient and weathered Australian landscape, Kate Briscoe mixes sand into paint to create eroded geological cross sections and striations that capture the substance and sensuality of the earth. For Kate, landforms tell stories. Geological cross sections and sediment layers record past events, catastrophes, the shift and flow of elemental forces over time. Although these works reference the geology of specific areas across the continent-from Arnhem Land and The Kimberly to the South coast of NSW-they are essentially abstract improvisations of texture and colour that facilitate a rich visual experience for the viewer and convey the ‘essence’ of place. Based in Sydney, Kate has been a professionally practising artist for the past 4 decades. She has held numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally with highly successful exhibitions in South Korea, Hong Kong, Beijing, the UK and the US. Kate has been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including The Blake, The Fleurieu Prize for Landscape, The Plein Air Prize, The Wynne Prize, The Calleen Art Prize, Muswellbrook Art Prize, KAAF Art Prize and the Paddington Art Prize. Kate’s work is held in major public collections including Artbank, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, NSW Government House, and Parliament House Canberra, ANA Hotel, Sydney, KPMG, Sydney, Deutsche Asset Management, Leeuwin Estate, Credit Suisse Melbourne, and private collections internally as New York, Seoul and Auckland.

Faustas Sadauskas Requisition of Matter 25 Nov - 20 Dec 2021

The Requisition of Matter is an expose of selected works articulating the use of Australian marble to remake found objects into abstract sculptures. As works of contemporary art, they seek to address the process by which geometric volumes are recomposed. Originating as simple constructs, they are transfigured into recognisable abstract forms - the cylinder becomes a ring, the cone twists into a knot, the cube loops around itself, the sphere is divided into variegated hues, ovals interweave within their own space... The use of marble sees various structural elements within each work become fastened to create an equilibrium of pivoting shapes. Other forms are braced together or buttressed against one another, seemingly defying their own material shortcomings having been moulded and flexed into various contortions. Faustas is a master of his material and has been creating sculpture since 1984. He has exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions including Toorak Village Sculpture, Montalto Sculpture Prize, Horizon and Creativity as part of World Lithuania, Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Yering Station Sculpture and the McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award. He has won numerous awards, has been commissioned on many projects and his sculptures are held in major collections within Australia and Internationally.

Jeff Raglus Musically he has toured, played, recorded and released albums with The Bachelors From Prague, The Black Sorrows, The Beachniks, The Feeling Groovies, Fogg, Rebecca Barnard, Ross McLennan, his own solo projects and currently with Victoriana Gaye.

23 Dec - 17 Jan 2022

Jeff has regularly exhibited since 1989 in both solo and group exhibitions and has been commissioned for significant collections both within Australia and internationally. He has designed for Mambo, Swatch Watches, The Arena Theatre company, Ansett Airlines and many more. He has designed numerous album covers, released 4 children books, made hundreds of poster and T Shirt prints.

Summer Romance

Jeff Raglus is a contemporary artists who divides his practice equally between music and the visual arts. From developing his own brand of new pop, and constantly blurring and shifting the boundaries between graphic and fine art Jeff has formed a cult like following. His creative and artistic influences vary from a mid-century vibe to a primitive and sometimes surreal take on something he calls ‘Surf/Folk/Pop’. With art works ranging from painting, prints, collage and sculpture Jeff has no boundaries to his creativity. Only those who collect are privy to Jeff’s secret messages and drawings on the back of his works.

Geoff Bartlett Revival 20 Jan - 14 Feb 2022

Geoff Bartlett is a sculptor who has no boundaries when it comes to materialising an idea. He employs a range of techniques such as welding, soldering, plating, casting, carving, modelling, riveting, bolting and lamination all combined in the making of the one sculpture. Most recently Geoff has been exploring 3D printing and revisiting older works to gain inspiration for a new series of bronze sculptures. ‘Revival’ will be a celebration of this new process of creativity for Geoff. Geoffrey Bartlett studied at the RMIT between 1971-73, followed with a post-graduate diploma in 1976. In 1983 Bartlett was awarded a Harkness fellowship and completed a two-year Master of Fine Arts (Hons) at Columbia University, New York. In 2007 the National Gallery of Victoria presented a major retrospective of sculpture between1987 to 2007. Bartlett has held over thirty solo exhibitions and has been selected for survey exhibitions including the Mildura Sculpture Triennial, the Australian Sculpture Triennial, the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, the McClelland Sculpture Survey, and the National Sculpture Prize and Exhibition, National Gallery of Australia. Moments

Karan Hayman’s carefully structured canvases are distinguished by their highly personalised and often surreal, whimsical approach. Motifs and symbols such as horses, trees, boats, water, roads and figures have always been used throughout Hayman’s career. The textured surfaces are palpably sensual, flowing seascapes and landscapes ambiguous in an arresting and mysterious yet always warmly lyrical way.

Bruce Armstrong From the Vault 17 Mar - 11 Apr 2021

Bruce Armstrong is one of Australia’s most prominent sculptors and is well known for his large scale public sculptures such as Eagle (Bunjil) situated on Wurundjeri Way in Melbourne’s Docklands and his pair of Guardians, commissioned to flank the Russell Street entrance of the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. With his pursuit of formal qualities, a search for the perfect combination of shapes, colours and surfaces, Armstrong’s monumental figures engage the spectator in subjects such as mythology, the spiritual forces of nature, and the relationship of public sculpture to architectural design. His 2016 retrospective at The National Gallery of Victoria ‘An Anthology of Strange Creatures’ was not only a celebration of Bruce’s extensive body of sculptural work, but also a showcase his lesser known two dimensional work which is now the artist’s main focus. This will be Bruce’s second & Gallery exhibition with his first show being our launch exhibition in October 2020. From the Vault will be a combination of new and older works that explore materials and methods such as wood, bronze, drawings and paintings.

Stephen Pleban Drawing upon images culled from the internet, music and personal photos Stephen focuses on humans reconnecting and responding to the landscape. Thinking of a Place

Stephen’s paintings are highly worked and aim to build an ominous, otherworldly atmosphere through layers of paint and wax. Stephen’s artwork celebrates the physicality of the painting.

Mark Cuthbertson Remnants 12 May - 6 Jun 2022

Mark’s work explores metaphors of colonization & domestication within a broad national context. His artwork is a playful commentary on society turning the monotonous into something far more interesting and challenging. He creates using simplistic and common aspects & materials of the everyday, drawing influence from artists such as Man Ray, Duchamp and Christo, who seek alternative ways to transform an object of the everyday into artistic vehicles for social commentary. A master of material manipulation, Mark approaches his art practice with skills and experience that makes him a unique artist. Mark deconstructs an idea to its simplest elements re-purposing and re-contextualising rudimentary materials, stripping them to their barest elements and reinventing their application and purpose. Exhibiting since 2005, Mark has created projects across Australia, China and Russia. Most recently he has been selected into the Montalto Sculpture prize, Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Wollongong Sculpture Award, BOAA - Biennale of Australian Art and the Tesselaar Sculpture Award. Mark has delivered both public and private art commissions with his current large sculptures, having focused on concrete as a design material, and has recently completed major public art project with Geelong City Council.
