Suze van der Beek’s reductive method foregrounds the reflective surface of a small body of water in relation to surrounding atmospheric lighting conditions. Suze works with the landscape tradition reduced to its basic components; foreground, background and horizon as a means of investigating the translation of space and light from the world in front of the lens to the photographic image.
Her intention is to engage viewers with an experience that is complex, subtle and affecting by amplifying the aesthetic qualities of her photographic images such as nuanced details, soft, diffuse tone and the sensing of subtle movement (inferred by the relation between salient and recessive areas of the image plane).
Suze van der Beek is a visual artist and art educator with many years of practice. Suze has a Master of Fine Art by Research from the School of Creative Arts, University of Tasmania. She is an active member of The Pear Shed Gallery Cooperative, a committee member of Turrakana – Tasman Arts Association and the Co-Director of Lightwave Festival. Suze lives at White Beach on the Tasman Peninsula in Lutruwita / Tasmania and teaches visual art at Tasman District School. Her work is held in collections in Australia and Aotearoa / New Zealand.
