My work has always been a direct response to what’s happening in my life.
It’s only now, looking back to put this exhibition together, that I realised that a lot of it is about beauty in one form or another. Looking at what is expected of us as women; to be pretty and elegant, to dress our homes with floral couch covers and colourful curtains.
I find beauty in the fabrics, but not in the sentiment. I have rebelled against all of these restrictions my whole life. Rebelling is beautiful!
We are always being judged by how we look. Lessons from Art History show us thatWomen get Ogled, Sex Sells, but Time Flies, and I’m happy to say that I don’t get ogled anymore. It’s a huge freedom and a relief.
Then there are The Three Graces which were made as a direct response to this. Now that I am past youth, beauty and elegance I am happily still left with my humour. - Yvonne
Yvonne Kendall was born in Birmingham, England in 1965, and emigrated to Australia with her parents at the age of 9. She studied sculpture at the Victoria College, in Melbourne, and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1987.
Her work is mostly biographical, sometimes disarmingly honest, often humerous and whimsical. She predominantly works with found objects and household textiles to investigate social, psychological and cultural themes.
She started collaborating with Henning Eichinger in 1997 on a project, Kultural Kommuting, and was invited to Germany in 2000 to give a workshop at the University of Reutlingen. She has lived and worked in Germany for 24 years.
She has exhibited widely throughout Australia and Europe, been awarded a number of prizes and grants and is represented in many international collections.
