What is architecture?
Process and Result It may seem at first as a simple and innocent question. When in fact, the answers may vary according to individuals as well as in depth of explanations. This being said, my own point of view starts by a brief analysis of what architecture really implies. On one hand, we have the process that tries to introduce a poetic meaning into a 3D object(building). On the other hand, comes the result defined by the sculptural manifestations of forms in space. In my opinion, architecture is not just one or the other, but instead the combination between the two, since both processes have their own importance. However, both explenations miss an important point. With this in mind, we can easily state that architecture is much more than just a design of buildings. Identification of place In my third year of study at the faculty of architecture I came across a book called “Understanding Architecture” by Simon Unwin. It was during a seminar, in which we had to analyse a building, when I asked myself the question “What is really architecture?”, but more over “How can I truly understand it in order to be able to make architecture myself?”. In his book, Simon Unwin explains how music is very similar in design to architecture, since they represent a “conceptual organisations of parts into a whole”. In particular, the parts can be represented for instance by places that can be either invented or refined. Despite this first similarity, art in the form of painting and sculpture is the property of ones mind, whilst architecture depends upon the contribution as well as participation of many. To give an illustration of what I mean, let us have a look at these places that I mentioned before. The designer, who operates with patterns and arrangements in different combinations and compositions, suggests places that for the user, who operates with familiarity and direct use, may not be in a perfect match. Although the designer tries to satisfy our needs of living, related directly to the things we do, he might sometimes tend to become objective in his work. This I noticed, during my years of study and my experience in the practice of architecture. At the university, it is tried to set the basics of architecture just like when learning a new language you first learn grammar, writing as well as reading. When it comes to practice, we try to apply what we’ve learned, like for example we try to speak the language. Moreover, the projects that we make in school are different from the ones in real practice, because of the simple fact that the person we are designing for is not any more fictional or just in our imagination. Like Simon Unwin says, “architecture is an identification of place”. We as architects are supposed to create places in direct connection with the user, since the needs may vary from client to client. All things considered, architecture is supposed to created places for the users, that satisfy their needs and last but not least thinks ahead and tries to integrate these subjective results into a larger scale, without having the parts having interfering with each other, but most importantly working harmoniously with each other.

Connection between the functions and the physiognomy of a tree: - treading plan - roots(green space/origin) - ground floor - trunk(representation, verticality/scope) - 1st floor - crown(branching purpose for smaller projects to become something tangible, multitude of projects, clade, relationships) - roof floor - top(panorama, overview, relaxation) The transition from the exterior of the building to the interior is similar to the effect of clearing of trees in the woods, ending with a volume of light(atrium)
