ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
TUDOR BOGDAN
what is architecture? For me, architecture means more than a physical part, more than its nature and its visual qualities... it means also inherent part, the part that it is impossible to see, which we can just feel with all our senses, our movements through it and around it. To create special places, which could be the simplest ones or the most complex, they always have to be natural for us, natural to feel them, to live in them, to pass through them. I have noticed that usually the people see architecture just in an aesthetic manner, but it means a lot more than that On the other hand, the architects should visualize all the real aspects of the existence of a new project, a pavilion, a building, a restoration or a reconversion of an old construction, an urban space, a landscape intervention. They should have the possibility to imagine how the new can affect the existing, if the proposed intervention could in any manner `beautify` the context, make it better from a lot of points of view or there will be some problems that should be solved by changing the solution. One important feature of a project is the concept and this has to be pretext for improving the solution, and not a puerile characteristic for aesthetic reasons. The relation between the building and the exterior is very important, even if it is an urban context or a more natural one, the relations between the spaces created (exterior-inside, inside-inside, views between these spaces), the functionality (conforming with the architectural program and with the needs that has to be satisfied); also, like I said before, a very important aspect is the relation between the built object and the human being, with its senses. Architecture can astonish us with its beauty, complexity‌ or can be very simple and humble, also depending on the specific function and program of the architectural objects. One of the most important things, which also can give the feature of natural, is the fact that architecture should be a part of the context, as when you see it, it feels like everything has to be in that place, even if we are talking about the modern or the old architecture and even if the object is in harmony with the nature or with the other human made objects or if it is in contradiction with the place. One important meaning of architecture, which often is forgotten, is that the physical construction has to make the human being feel the place, the nature of the materials, the textures, the diversity of lights and shadows, the possible movements through the void created by the solid. Also, architecture can be seen as a process. When we see a city for example, we see something that has already a defined form, but this is just a phase of its `life`, it is in an undefined change, exactly like a living context, like a forest. The same thing could be observed on a smaller scale, but easier to be controlled; especially the projects which imply more, for example town planning or urban interventions and even the small projects could be thought like processes which should develop depending on the changeable context. Nowadays, it became more and more important to design projects that can modify in time depending of the different needs that they can fulfill; this characteristic of changeability makes them more economic, sustainable and also more ecologic. In these days, there is also a trend for building ecological and sustainable architecture, with zero emission, to use more natural materials and less the artificial ones; the last criteria really can make a difference in the endeavor of integrating the architectural object in the landscape. Like in a lot of other disciplines, also in architecture, there are some very important secondary factors that will also be tangent with it and which can affect the whole image of the solution. These factors, as culture, social or economic should not represent for an architect an impediment for its creation; instead these should help him towards a better solution constrained by the context.

RESTORATION
urban regeneration - fortress of arad The integrated urban regeneration of the Arad`s citadel - This represents the presented project for my thesis based on the theoretical study. The entire project develops around the city`s habsburgic citadel which could become an important piece at an urban level. The regeneration process will affect not just the fortress, but also the entire chain of parks along the Mures river and will be also solve some problematic urban areas. Therefore, the project was divided in four main parts: the fortress (my part), the inner area of the riverbank, the outer area of the riverbank and the problematic areas. The main project is represented by the restoration and the reconversion of the citadel, creating new economic, cultural, social places inside the walls of the fortress. The project is a long-term process wished to be carefully developed in relation with the city of Arad; there will be created connection between the two of them. Even if the fortress will be densified, the main characteristic of the citadel will be kept (the existing relation between the baroque church, the who palaces and the inner walls). The new functions and facilities proposed in the court-yard will attract investors. For keeping the main characteristic of the citadel, the solution chosen from four different possibilities is the construction in the underground which will permit the densification without affecting the nowadays atmosphere. The fortress and the town of Arad are wanted to become a cultural center for the region. ● 6th year: 2016 - 2017 ● educational location: Faculty of Architecture Timișoara ● type: group of 4 (just for the pre-thesis)

preparing density Europan 13 in Os - This represents the presented project to Europan 13 Norway for the city of Os, the runner-up prize winner project (the three A1 format boards sent for the competition are placed in the lower part of the page). The project brief requires to the participants to develop a strategy for the old center of Os for the future growth of the local population. The project tries to identify the issues in the central area, and not just to respect the requirements for the brief. After a rigurous urban analysis of the context, it was taken the decision not to densify the zone, but to rarefy it, to liberate it from all the limits and obstacles which are the main causes of the unfunctionality of the center. Therefore, our strategy reorganizes the actual site keeping just the two historical wooden houses. The new fix functions are a hostel and parking complex and an office building, together with some interventions along the shore and the natural rock wall. All the other proposed functions, changeable in the future depending of the necessities, are integrated in the pavilions and the grid has the role to organize the entire process. ● 4th year: 2014 - 2015 ● educational location: Faculty of Architecture Timișoara ● type: group of 5

Landscaping in Trento - This urban project has the role to connect the residential areas in a northern part of Trento, the capital of the region Trentino Alto-Adige. On the site of Rio Saluga and Parco delle Coste there are some connection issues between the house districts and the natural parks and green corridor along the river. The accessibility on these green areas is therefore mainly blocked for the people from the proximity. The concept of the project is to realize a connection between these natural areas and also to create a path along the Saluga river, all these related to the urban context. Also, is very important to make these more attractive so, in this way, more people will come to use them frequently. For this to happen, there will be created some different types mechanisms which will increase the social

aspect of the zones (sitting areas and sport facilities along the Saluga river, open cinema in Parco delle Coste, public gardens, areas with a changeable function especially for social and cultural events, small places with attractive panoramic sights). For systemizing and for managing easier the process and its steps of its timeline it was design a virtual grid along the path and the natural park that can become changeable in the time depending on needs and the changings of the urban context. In the same time, there is proposed to involve the local population using their opinions for the future developing of the project; therefore, they will be able to take part of the process directly on the site due to some information points along the routes or to subscribe on a website especially created for this project.

10 apartments Residential building in Timișoara - The site where is proposed the building of apartments is located on a parcel near the Bega river. The project contains ten apartments and shared spaces (a gallery, a greenhouse, a space for children, storage rooms). The main concept is represented by the green terrace which creates a green area bigger then the area occupied by the construction on the terrain; they can also be used by the lodgers. The apartments are oriented in order to take advantage of the sunlight (the day rooms are oriented west and south & the night rooms are oriented to the east and north). Every apartment is actually an assembly of boxes with the both openings oriented east-west (some of them are oriented north for getting a lot of indirect sunlight); there are also secondary circular openings on the lateral of the boxes. There are two staircases which have also the role of bringing the light in some otherwise dark spaces. Along the street, where there is the front façade, the building is made in terraces so that the volume do not look so massive and also for illumination reasons. ● 3rd year: 2013 - 2014 ● educational location: Faculty of Architecture Timișoara ● type: individual

convento di santa maria Restoration in Cividale del Friuli - The project developed for the convent Santa Maria is part of a bigger strategy of the entire monachal complex which implies the restoration and conversion of the unused spaces in a museum. The convent was built in the Middle Eve on some roman walls and foundation which are wanted to be pointed out and seen. The presented project is focused on the three room, the corridor between the first and the second one in relation with the courtyard. Before to propose any kind of intervention, it was made a very detailed analysis of the existing elements regarding the materials, the order of execution of the construction layers and the degradation for all the surfaces of the walls, columns, foundations, pavement and ceiling of the four spaces. The proposed interventions are subtle and they consist of removing the last layers of material applied on the old one and cleaning and preserving the kept ones. The new intervention is represented by a skeletal path which points out the old construction elements; the new-old is collaboration and not interfering. ● 5th year: 2015 - 2016 ● educational location: Facoltà di Ingegneria e Architettura di Trento ● type: group of 4
