NOTE Indian residences have witnessed a gradual incline in design reformation and transformation. Contemporary design is no more jargon or a visual rip-off, but is a concept-aided design style that never had a movement in the past, did not arise in only certain specific parts of the world but developed into a rather open-ended statement design process. "Light, air, and comfort - these three things I must always have in a room." Elsie de Wolfe P&T Studio defines their project Waterfront as Warm Luxury, that in my opinion meticulously dissects every element of the much sought-after design and aesthetic style. Windowed walls embellish the common spaces with natural light, the bedroom is a symphony of the warmth of woods and sophistication of minimal botanical elements while the utility spaces strictly adhere to functionality over form keeping visual uniformity intact. This well-composed amalgamation of muted palettes symbolizing minimalism, textures & patterns expressing nostalgia, and inclusion of abstract art, artifacts & décor manifesting a sense of curiosity among the visitors makes Waterfront indeed a space of comfort, luxury, and soul-pleasing all at once.

BRICK VEIL
Taking inspiration from its striking brick materiality that largely envelopes its elevation, the building is aptly called Brick veil.
Feature : Haarsha Architects Photography : Shamanth Patil WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM
The 4-story abode elegantly towers over the landscape and faces the Southern skies in all its earthy glory. Its warm appeal perfectly complements the moderatelycool climatic conditions of a high-altitude city like Bengaluru.
The first and second floors accommodate the more private spaces sacrosanct to the home anatomy, with bed & bath spaces occupying the Southern and Northern facing pockets. The layout and an informal family living/bridge that is centrally located.

A moment held still in the clasp of tradition and Indian craftsmanship; the inviting dining area remains steadfastly grounded in its identity. A liveedge wood dining table commands the space, accompanied by a set of six umber teak and beige linenupholstered chairs. A rattan-faced credenza borders the zone, reveling in the delicate patterned weaves while a distressed engraved wood Buddha mural rests above it.

The building also showcases a strategic play of vertical surfaces with an unpolished finish that adds an organic charm to the architecture.

Portions of the building facade also showcase brick jaalis that facilitate privacy and re-engineer the quality of natural light entering into doubleheight communal spaces in the abode. Likened to functional art forms, the jaalis aesthetically uplift the building inside and out.

A tasteful blend of simplicity and artfulness trickles into the interior compositions of Brick Veil. The base canvas of the interiors comprises brightly whitewashed walls and soft beige marble floors. Interior layering of accent and feature elements begins to personalize and add character to each space like decorative wallpapers and fluted wall paneling
WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM
Furnishing and artful decor pieces add to the final touch, like statement light fixtures, midcentury modern furniture, and soft monochromatic palettes specific to each space. Texture-rich additions like rattan, suede tufted beds, timber false ceilings, and hardwood flooring; bold pops of accents in rust and toasty browns altogether enhance the experiential signature of Brick Veil.

this house has been designed extremely sustainably with only upcycled furniture, or locally sourced products.

In the living room - they had two oddly sized small windows on either side of the main window, which they covered up with mock drapes. They added an extra overhead cabinet for storage in the kitchen as it lacked storage space, and reconfigured the staff room with a loose pull out storage bed and a washing / drying area. It all happened very quickly and seamlessly.

They added pelmets on the windows for curtains, she was adamant that she wanted full length curtains - sheers specifically on black rods to add height and filter the light to make it softer.

Most of the Parsi style furniture and the white glass lights we have was either inherited from Rustom's grandfather who had a beautiful home in Pune, and repurposed. Or bought earlier for a different space and re-used or gifted them for their wedding.

Design is a marriage between different elements and thoughts. We believe in bringing out the space in a way, wherefrom an apartment it transforms into a home. A sliding folding partition replaces another wall that is demolished to provide a larger layout.

The living room also has an office space with fluted sliding glass shutters. This not only gives the benefit of providing complete privacy and solitude for all the work-from-home sessions but can also be opened up when entertaining more guests. A true form of work-life balance. Since the huge and spacious living room is sprawled horizontally without any walls and with big openings. The wooden ceiling that connects the living room and the dining area has been given character by adding a wooden detail.

This was a special project because we worked on the planning as well as the execution of clubbing two homes. It took a lot of planning and going back and forth to decide how to create one harmonious space out of the two apartments that we were tasked to combine.

The parents’ bedroom is again kept in the warm neutral tones of whites, blues, and browns. The bed frame is kept simple and minimalistic. The paneled woodwork on the wall draws one’s attention to the bed and the coziness that it offers. The room door is disguised as a part of this wood paneling and gives the space a continuity that makes it look spacious and seamless.

The guest bedroom has been decorated in a way that it can be later converted into a kid’s bedroom.
The sofa-cum-bed offers to keep a lot of open space in the room for any recreational activities. The battleship grey of the bed and the sage green of the curtains create a lively and bright room.

TAD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
STUDIO INVOKE Minimalistic designs, with earthy shades calming colours, clean lines and play of light describe this contemporary residence. We should work on our skills by reading, and seeing the work of great architects. We must work hard to achieve the same. Design is a constantly evolving process so rather than coming up with one approach we can try to diverse the thinking to get better solutions. "OUR FOCUS IS TO CREATE SPACES THAT ENHANCE OUR CLIENTS BUSINESS".
ANUSHI SHAH & RAVI DAVE PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT STUDIO INVOKE
WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM
ONE-ON-ONE 1. WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
Once we finalize the project, firstly we understand clients’ needs and site context. We decode a few points from the brief given by the client. These points become the key points to generating a design language that also resolves the need of the user. A lot of research and analysis has been done for the brief so we can generate the customized design within the language. This also helps shape the project with its personalized touch and also nullified our preconceive intuition. We also take a concept to execution with meticulous detail.
2. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PALETTE? IF YES, HOW DID IT BECOME A SIGNATURE?
We do not have a signature palette for each project. We believe in the versatility of design. We try to make at least one unique element that stands out and becomes the “Identity” of the project.
3. WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS DO YOU ASK BEFORE BEGINNING ANY DESIGN PROJECT? WHICH PIECE OF INFORMATION IS OF UTMOST VALUE?
5. TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT THAT BECAME A TURNING POINT IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE.
We generally set a meeting and try to understand their needs by talking about the project. We then show them a presentation about different styles of interior design such as contemporary, traditional, Indian contemporary, boho, rustic, etc. Once they liked a particular style we make a mood board and conceptual presentation for the same. We also ask if they have any sets of problems facing right now so we can resolve that in our design for their new space. The key points can be clients’ taste and their resource allocation.
We started our design journey 10 years back as an individual and established the firm 5 years back. so, if we see it as a milestone, we cannot pick one significant project. During our first year, we had designed a 7 storied- 50-bed pediatric hospital where services were much more important. It opened doors for us in the health care industry. During our second year, we turned an 1800 sqft basement space into a luxury boutique space. Then we worked for a brand like Havmor icecreams, we had to design parlors keeping the brand identity intact while still giving it a completely new look.
4. WHAT KIND OF RULES, CULTURE, OR STRUCTURE DO YOU THINK NEED TO BE INCORPORATED TO FOSTER TEAM COLLABORATION AT THE WORKPLACE?
We do not believe in hierarchy, so in our office, we all always seat together in a studio. This helps us to brainstorm on projects together. We believe it builds a healthy relationship with our staff. Regular discussions with the team evolve into a good output in the final design. We hold site visits and client meetings as a team, which helps them to be a part of the design journey. As we think design is a collective effort and it evolves through process and teamwork.
Design is a constantly evolving process so rather than coming up with one approach we can try to diverse the thinking to get better solutions. We try to make at least one unique element that stands out and becomes the “Identity” of the project.
6. HOW DO YOU STRATEGIZE AND BALANCE WHEN YOU HAVE MULTIPLE COMPETING PRIORITIES?
We generally set the priorities at the beginning of the week and channel our work. If sometimes priority clashes, then we try to work hard to achieve those parameters. The result might be optimum in given challenges not necessarily maximum. We try to raise our standard with better planning on paper. And also try to come up with more than one option to achieve the best solution. 7.YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THIS DESIGN COMMUNITY?
We think as a designer one should believe in themselves. Clients can only trust our process if we are convinced. We should also respect our ecosystem. We should work on our skills by reading, and seeing the work of great architects. We must work hard to achieve the same. Design is a constantly evolving process so rather than coming up with one approach we can try to diverse the thinking to get better solutions. WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM

INDIA GATE
ARCHITECT - NEDWIN LUTYENS LOCATION - NEW DELHI
Sir Edwin Lutyens, who structured the India Gate, was a main war remembrance planner and was additionally an individual from CWGC. He built it as a secular memorial freed from any religious association or cultural ornamentation. Also, Lutyens wanted the monument to be a classical one, so refused to include any Asian motifs like pointed arches. The style of architecture of India Gate is that of a monument and is usually compared with the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Gateway of India in Mumbai, and the Arch of Constantine in Rome. GATEWAY OF INDIA
ARCHITECT - GEORGE WITTET LOCATION :- MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA
The structural design of the Gateway of India is constituted of a large arch, with a height of 26m. The monument is built in yellow basalt and indissoluble concrete. The structural plan of Gateway of India is designed in the Indo-Saracenic style. One can also find traces of Muslim architectural styles incorporated in the structure of the grandiose edifice. The central dome of the monument is about 48 feet in diameter, with a total height of 83 feet. Designed with intricate latticework, the 4 turrets are the prominent features of the entire structure of the Gateway of India. WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM

WARANGAL FORT GATE
LOCATION :- WARANGAL, TELANGANA
The construction of the Warangal Fort began under the reign of Ganapati Deva in the 13th century. It is believed that Ganapati Deva replaced an existing structure made of bricks to build the stone fort of Warangal on a hillock called Ekashila. After him, his daughter Rani Rudrama Devi and her grandson Pratap Rudra Deva, made considerable additions to the fort. WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM

LOCATION :- BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH
The gates were made of stone but the inscription looks similar to that on timber. This was the first of its kind and the artisans followed their experience with wood. The entire body of the gateways was covered with extensive narrative sculptures. These reliefs show events in the life of Buddha but there is no order to it. This clearly indicates an involvement of various devotees in the construction of the gates. WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM

The colour palette used throughout is calming with muted shades of blush pink, blue-yellow and grey on walls, furniture and upholstery. One of the best things about pastels is that together they work in harmony. Combining these colours with the rich, smooth and rough textures of Italian grey marble, the retro-chic appeal of lightly coloured white oak wood, balances with the elegant and exclusive furniture.
