The vignette within the foyer exudes an old-world yet neoteric charm! The prepossessed rattan bench was scaled up to anchor the space, flanked by a duo of amorphous form banana fibre luminaires and a focal wood frame mirror

A statement wall installation by Bamboopecker frames the living, created wholly in woven bamboo that celebrates the various natural tints of the material, positioned snugly amidst a pair of brass and glass wall lights. In addition, a minimalist prayer nook has been conceptualised in a quiet corner consisting of a Tanjore painting, a distressed wall embellishment, and a timeless brass lamp sourced in Pondicherry.

A moment held still in the clasp of tradition and Indian craftsmanship; the inviting dining area remains steadfastly grounded in its identity. A liveedge wood dining table commands the space, accompanied by a set of six umber teak and beige linenupholstered chairs. A rattan-faced credenza borders the zone, reveling in the delicate patterned weaves while a distressed engraved wood Buddha mural rests above it.

The staircase is a transformation that the studio felt was integral to the home’s design narrative. “The erstwhile staircase connecting the levels was visually bulky, made entirely in glossy black granite, which rendered the stairwell with a dark and stunted appearance.


This project inverted that approach entirely; we had to conceptualise a space that could resonate across a spectrum of inhabitants as it was intrinsically a guest residence created for an organisation.

On the ground level, the guest bedroom is a vision in ochre. Referencing historical bungalows and quaint residences characteristically earmarked by tinted oxide floors.

Micro-topped by Super Surfaces in a warm ochre hue, the spacious guest bedroom comprises a resting space, a study nook, and a walk-in closet created by introducing a partition wall to better utilize the layout.

The ensuite master bedroom is a space steeped in character and offers an ingenious take on raw materiality. The sheer volume of the room and its lofty sloping ceilings brewed architectural drama that was untapped potential awaiting exploration. We experimented across its surfaces, the walls, floors, and ceilings in tow; manifesting as focal elements that dabble in simple materials seen in an unconventional light.

The objet d’art in the bedroom is the sloping ceiling; woven rattan Chatai sheets have been used to sheathe the underside of the roof, layered by teak veneer-clad rafters to create further dimension, and inconspicuously conceal newly introduced electrical conduits.

The second guest bedroom is a coalition of quiet charm and comfort set apart with its pale green micro-topped flooring. The bespoke headboard artistically conceptualises details and art. The all-embracing greens contrast stimulatingly with a deep scarlet hue worn by the printed curtains. The bathroom has been finished in a subtle sage green patterned tile and raw Kota stone tiles over the walls.

The third guest bedroom is one that witnesses the coming together of fresh green tones and white. An in-situ terrazzo flooring created by Bharat Floorings experiments with a white base playfully bespeckled with green glass chips. The colour further makes a cameo as a textured green stucco accent wall to draw upon the colour of the glass chips cast in the flooring.

The building façade responds to the two aspects – Responding to the Climate and Augmenting the immediate context. The Façade is an outcome of a simple evolution process from line to plane to form. The responsive façade of the building is dominated and also unified by distinctive numerous vertical louvre sun shading system, articulated neatly over the high-performance DGU thermal break windows to cut down the south sun gain consequentially.

The consequential central courtyard on the first floor is a significant relief amidst the massive concrete block which is an ‘open to sky’ calm space stimulating a tranquil, cool, green microenvironment with a water body and trees. Created by enclosure from two sides by terracotta brick jali, the breathing walls bring in cooler air inside the building, reduce the dependability on air conditioning and contribute again towards energy efficiency of the building. The design evolves with the intent to stand calm and composed. The Building claims its entity in the entire vicinity, bringing a sense of pride and belongingness to its users. The concrete building mass is steered and sliced by three vertical planes strategically to attain relief spaces at the front –double height Reception Lobby.

SUNYATA ECO HOTEL

How a building in an urban scenario on an optimal site size can be a sustainable and eco-friendly structure.

The hotel is primarily built with locally available earth which is used in various forms - mud blocks poured earth, rammed earth and mud concrete. Natural light, ventilation and heat are regulated by incorporating brick jaalis and mutual shading techniques.

The water collected at the courtyard passes through natural filters and excess water is collected in a water body. A 30 feet deep well is excavated for the purpose of water collection. Breaking away from the common practice of excavating borewells, the open well does not have any negative impacts on the aquifers and also allows for the ground water to percolate from the sides.

The interiors are very minimal. Every material and element of the structure is highlighted in its true self. Exposed bricks, earthen walls and exposed concrete with contrasting black stone floor becomes the feature in each space. Beds, sofas, chairs and wardrobes are custom made in cane. This hotel is largely designed as a load bearing structure and thus avoiding concrete columns. Age old alternative construction techniques like brick vaults, jack arch roofs, precast hourdi clay roofs and filler slabs have all been used to help reduce concrete.

Sunyata eco hotel is an operating boutique hotel today which is self sufficient in generating the resources it needs to function while also being an experience center for living in an eco friendly space.

ONE-ON-ONE 1. WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

Our creative process has been always very simple. We try to provide with most simple solutions in terms of spaces and geometry in every kind of design. We strongly believe that creativity lies in the ease of living and comfort. We begin with spatially organizing utility spaces, juxtapositioning then interestingly, focusing on maximizing efficiency in terms of reducing movement and energy usage. After finalizing spaces, our main focus shifts to finalizing details, internal layouts and furniture allocation. Last but not the least, furnishing including fabric selection, draperies, finishes and textures, embellished with modest landscaping happen to be the final touch in the process. 2. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PALETTE? IF YES, HOW DID IT BECOME A SIGNATURE?

Looking into the projects we have done, our signature palette has been quite subtle and composed. The reason behind we consider space is designed to be inhibited most of the time, hence require to soothe the eyes. So regarding colour palette, We mostly use nude colour contrasted by natural wooden finish first of all so where the material is used honestly, prefer not to provide with any kind of external finish or colour this is how we came to our signature palette being base and subtle. 3. WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS DO YOU ASK BEFORE BEGINNING ANY DESIGN PROJECT? WHICH PIECE OF INFORMATION IS OF UTMOST VALUE?

5. WHAT KIND OF RULES, CULTURE OR STRUCTURE DO YOU THINK NEED TO BE INCORPORATED TO FOSTER TEAM COLLABORATION AT THEWORKPLACE?

Before beginning any project, first, we try to understand what is the basic requirement of the client through knowing them & their need for initiating the project. The information which is of utmost value happens to be positive communication between us and the client, where we understand the client's need and the client develops confidence with us, providing him with the best possible design solution, as most of the projects done by us are residences, which happens to be a dream for most of the families.

So when a project starts, it is shared amongst all team members and open for discussions, and ideas through brainstorming and general briefing. All inputs are as important and discussed thoroughly supported by facts. Periodic office outings and family involvements have also helped us in being a good team. Lastly, but very importantly, providing appropriate credit to the design team helps to develop a warm environment, thereby enhancing team spirit and inclusiveness to make the firm a success.

4. TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT THAT BECAME A TURNING POINT IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE.

When we talk about the project that turns the professional life happens to be the one which changes the course of how to deal with that professional journey. In our case, it happened to be ‘Anushakti’, from this project we started documenting and it changed our course from designing, implementing and moving on.

We feel our work is like a home, where we spend most of our active time throughout the day, hence a place which is shared by our team is like a family. For every architect first project happens to be the most important one as it makes him realise what he is capable of doing on the ground, apart from drawing on sheets.

6. HOW DO YOU STRATEGIZE AND BALANCE WHEN YOU HAVE MULTIPLE COMPETING PRIORITIES?

Architecture is a planning business, in which only seldom comes a sudden requirement hence if we plan strategically, it is possible to manage multiple competing priorities schematically, without any functional glitches. Foremost important, happen to be the finalization of the plan, where repetitive iteration is possible after which generally all construction happens in stages. Hence, we feel with experience in construction stages and related drawing inputs and regular site visits enable balancing the needs of various projects simultaneously. 7.YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THIS DESIGN COMMUNITY?

As learning is a continuous process, we feel one may not be perfect in everything but should always try to understand one's interest area, and to create a niche, should be focused to excel in any and every manner possible in and around a niche. WWW.THEARCHITECTSDIARY.COM

The main challenge we faced was the height of the ceiling and the double living area which had formal and informal space, with 4 master bedrooms. This current space had to be converted into Minimal Design 6BHK. The informal space which was around 400 sq. ft had to be converted into one of the Master bedrooms. A stark contrast is observed in the exterior and interior characters of this space. While the façade and landscaping minutely resembles elements from Japanese architecture and sustainable architecture with floating roofs as a champion feature, a conscious integration of positive and negative spatial boundaries leads to fascinating play of shades and shadows. About 80km southwest of Ahmedabad, the city that stood at this archaeological site 4500 years ago was one of the most important of the Indus Valley civilisation, which extended into what is now Pakistan.
