Interview

The Archive Magazine aims to bring you the best coverage of the latest news in the region. In each issue we will choose a theme and photographers are welcome to apply with their images.

1. Avishag Sha’ar Yeshuv’s project shows a different kind of community living on the outskirts of Israeli society, which rarely gets exposed in front pages; a very quiet and unique form of life.

In the first issue of The Archive, we bring you the profile of a leading photographer based in Southern Israel, Reuters photographer Amir Cohen.

2. Our second feature, by Hemya Moran, is the photographer’s personal examination of the slippery relationship between reality and its photographic representation.

Documentary photographer based in Jerusalem and working in both Israel and Russia, Ilia Yefimovich’s work focuses on conflict and the human obsession with territory. His work is a connection between childhood memories from Russia and current involvement with news coverage. Currently working with Getty Images.

Issue No. 1 Gaza War

Issue No.1 comes shortly after a long war between Israel and Hamas, during which many photojournalists covered the events of this operation from both sides of the conflict. We were surprised to receive a large amount of images from different photographers, and we are pleased to publish our selection of the best photographs on this topic.

How did you start ? I loved photography from a young age and was always drawn to realistic art. Documentary photography became an interest in my teenage years when I was exposed to many books and magazines and with time, I taught myself photography. I got to photojournalism about 12 years ago, after understanding that I don't get satisfaction with simply nice pictures. I felt the need to tell a story through my photographs, especially in that period of time when the State of Israel was preparing for the disengagement from Gaza. Who are your photography gurus ? It is hard for me to say that I have a photography Guru. I find them on the printed pages or wandering the web on a daily basis. What is the perfect moment in photography for you ? all the elements in the frame come together in a perfect harmony, or at least that is the moment that I wish for.

What is your favourite place to go to and why? The beach, it is my source for quiet and inspiration.

Do you find yourself taking pictures beside your journalistic work ? I shoot all the time. vI look at the world through frames and the camera accompanies me everywhere.

How is working with Reuters compering to local media? Work with Reuters is without a doubt better than working with local media. The agency is less interested in interior-political affairs and local events, and I admit that so am I. As opposed to a photographer who works for local media and his photographs get published only in Israel, when my photograph gets published in Reuters, it may reach a large number of people in different places around the world and I hope that I succeed in conveying the Israeli story in the right way for foreign eyes as well. Beyond that, in the local media there is almost no proper stage for quality photography as is accepted in a lot of places across the ocean, and that is a shame.

What are the benefits/downsides of working in the south ? The advantage of working in the south of the country is that there will always be what to photograph. The disadvantage is that sometimes the stress and the emotions are difficult to bear. Other than that, the people who live in the south are wonderful, and the winters here are stunning. What is your favourite colour ? Without a doubt Blue.

Alternative Communities Avishag Shaar-Yashuv

Israeli ecological communities is grooving with a believe in creating the perfect environment that will allow the human to live without harming the nature. ”Just like in ant farm, all the ants join together in the effort for greater good and overall needs of the group”. In these communities the concept of parenting as the western world knows it receives a wider existence, since mother of all is Nature. The community members believe that through creating this sharing habitat where everyone is equal.Everyone will be able to raise children in a natural and healthy environment which allows the child to grow with nature instead of destroying it.

The Commonlanders Hemya Moran During the passing year I’ve immersed myself for secluded periods of time, in the lives of people I’ve spotted in my daily surroundings and approached, having seen in them emblems of innocence and utopian living. I moved in with them, sometimes only for a few hours and more often for several days, immediately embracing and participating in their most intimate rituals, videotaping our interaction discretely and sometimes candidly. I then came back for a second visit, this time to reenact frozen scenes extracted from the surveillance material I’ve collected. In this way I was able to facilitate the conditions that enabled me to capture the appearance of complicity between us. On several occasions, after this was done, I would suggest that we switch roles, requesting to be staged and photographed by them or their friends or relatives. With some, I’ve repeated this process once every few

months. With others the encounters were brief and singular. This process and its photographic results constitute another facet of my inquiries regarding the intimacy and authenticity of reenactment, occupying a contradictory position both distant, and involved, repulsed and attracted, belonging and alone; experiencing both empathy and a struggle for domination. People in capitalist societies, especially postmodern societies, have replaced real ties and connections with symbols and signs. As a result, we experience the simulacra of reality instead of reality itself. In each of these captured encounters, lies a tension between existing romantic imagery, reality and reenactment. As my photographs go on to have a life of their own in the image realm, they themselves get swallowed up and incorporate into the online image bank, further complicating their slippery relationship with reality.
