The making of a legend Playwright Matthew Ryan talks about Kelly Image: Actor Steven Rooke as Ned Kelly in the 2012 production of Kelly. Photo - Rob Maccoll. Image (inset): Playwright Matthew Ryan. Photo - Amelia Dowd

If you love theatre, chances are you’ve seen one of Matthew Ryan’s plays on our stages recently … there’s been quite a few! In the last two years we’ve enjoyed productions of Chasing the Whale, Boy Girl Wall and The Harbinger, and we were lucky enough to have Matthew teach a playwriting workshop to a roomful of aspiring writers in 2012. Matthew got his start on the Gold Coast, taking part in several productions at Gold Coast Little Theatre, Spotlight and Javeenbah in the mid-nineties before moving to Brisbane and beginning his professional career as a writer. Next year will mark Matthew’s ninth mainstage production in ten years, making him one of the most prolific playwrights in Australia. But Kelly broaches new territory for Ryan, who is often known for his comedy. This gritty, historical drama is a new take on the Ned Kelly tale, focussing on the relationship between Ned and his brother Dan. What if

4

CULTURE

Dan survived the siege at Glenrowan? What if he’d visited his condemned brother on the eve of Ned’s hanging? Queensland Theatre Company debuted the critically-acclaimed play Kelly in 2012, and will now remount the production for the 19week tour to 39 locations across the country. Matthew Ryan talks about writing Kelly, and what inspired him to resurrect these two titans of Australian history. What inspired you to write Kelly? I spent some years as a kid living in Shepparton, which is right in Kelly Country. I was amazed even then at how much Ned Kelly had permeated the history of that area. Ned has haunted me ever since. I think it was the images. They were some of the most violent pictures a young kid would come across. The grotesque newspaper illustration of the shooting of Aaron Sherritt. The bizarre photo of Joe Byrne’s dead body, strung up in

a standing position. And of course, a towering figure wearing a suit of armour and shooting guns makes quite an impression on a kid. A few years ago I came up with the idea of a confrontation between the Mayne brothers James and Isaac (from The Mayne Inheritance) in a jail cell. But La Boite had just done a production of that story so there was nothing I could do with it. And then the Kelly brothers waltzed on in. It was an amazing moment. They immediately took over my brain and started arguing with each over whose fault it all was. All this imagery that was burned into my brain as a kid was venting out in these voices. I had to write it down just to stay sane. You’ve done a lot of research for Kelly. How much truth is in your final script? Almost all of the facts in the script surrounding Ned Kelly are as true as possible. But the real history is a bit murky

theartscentregc.com.au

‘Keep in mind Ned was a notorious liar, mainly because most of what we have him on record as saying, he was saying to the police – whom he had no qualms in lying to.’

anyway. Keep in mind Ned was a notorious liar, mainly because most of what we have him on record as saying he was saying to the police – whom he had no qualms in lying to. And the police at that time would often lie to make themselves look better so no one really knows for sure. My goal with Ned is simply to capture the spirit of the man. To make audiences feel they’re really in the room with him. I don’t think anyone’s successfully done that yet. The real Dan Kelly is something of a mysterious figure and there isn’t a lot of information about him in the history books. He tends to pop up in the confrontations, completely fail to do what is asked of him and Ned then has to fix things. I used this idea as a building block to create the fictional character but took a lot more artistic license with him than Ned. Dan carries more of the folklore side of the story.

theartscentregc.com.au

What do you think happened to Dan Kelly? I think it’s a fifty-fifty call as to whether Dan really survived. There are eye-witnesses that say he died. And there are eye-witnesses that saw Dan in the weeks after Glenrowan, heading for Queensland. There’s a grave with an unrecognizable body in it in Greta. And there are reports of a man named James Ryan out at Ipswich who claimed to be Dan and told stories about The Kelly Gang that no one else should know. I like the uncertainty of it all. It’s ripe geography for fiction. How long did Kelly take to conceptualise and write? It took three years to get the Yes. I started writing the first draft in July 2008. It grew over the years and had a whole lot of flashbacks to other times and places with other characters. I got some good advice from a few different sources that the play works better when it’s confined to the jail cell so I got rid of

the other locations and found a trick to have those flashbacks play out in the one room. How would you describe your style of writing? I’m mostly known for my comedy so I think this one is going to be surprising for some people. My work tends to be very story driven. I’m very structured. I’m much more interested in the action of a piece and what’s happening between the characters than I am in any grand political explorations. I tend to just let that stuff bubble up gently. Catch Kelly on Friday 13 March at 11.00am or 7.30pm, or Saturday 14 March at 7.30pm. Available to purchase in a Season Package now or single tickets from 5 January. Adults $54, Concession $47, Group 6+ $45 and Student $30. Book at www.theartscentregc.com.au or call (07) 5588 4000.

Scandalous tales Straight from The Playhouse at QPAC, where it opened Queensland Theatre Company’s 2015 season, we welcome the quickfire, turn-of-the-century comedy Boston Marriage to our stage. Image: Aaron Tait

Riddled with the wicked wit of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) Boston Marriage stars double Helpmann Award-winning actor Amanda Muggleton and will be directed by Gold Matilda Award winner Andrea Moor, who delighted audiences and critics alike with 2013’s QTC production Venus In Fur. So, what exactly is a ‘Boston Marriage’? ‘Boston Marriage’ was a term used in the Victorian era to refer to two single women living together, independent of men. Henry James coined the term in his novel The Bostonians, which told of an intimate companionship between two wealthy Boston women. According to New Repertory Theatre’s notes, the play ‘potentially fostered the ambitions of the early generations of professional women… Most likely, the Boston Marriage was many things to many women:

6

CULTURE

business partnership, artistic collaboration, lesbian romance.’ What’s the play about? Set in a Victorian drawing room, Anna and Claire are two bantering, scheming ‘women of fashion’ who live together on the fringes of society. Anna has just become the mistress of a wealthy man, while Claire is infatuated with a young girl and wants to enlist the jealous Anna’s help to arrange a rendezvous. As the two women exchange barbs and taunt their hapless maid, Claire’s love interest arrives and sets off a crisis that puts the women’s future at risk. What’s the play’s history? Following a string of successful plays featuring male protagonists, acclaimed playwright David Mamet wrote this piece for an entirely female cast. Boston Marriage was originally produced by the American Repertory Theater

in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1999. It was directed by David Mamet and starred Felicity Huffman of Desperate Housewives fame. It was later performed on London’s West End. This new Queensland Theatre Company production promises to be a grand affair, featuring three gorgeous girls, a stunning set and glamourous gowns designed by Stephen Curtis. From our theatre, the production will tour into nine regional Queensland locations. For more information please refer to www.queenslandtheatre.com.au.

Boston Marriage stars Amanda Muggleton, Helen Cassidy and Rachel Gordon. Catch it Friday 20 or Saturday 21 February at 7.30pm. Swing on this Four of Australia’s leading stage talents will deliver a modern take on some all-time swing classics plus ‘well-swung’ interpretations of rock and pop songs to our stage in March. We chat to Luke Kennedy, Matt Lee, Ben Mingay and Michael Falzon about swing, their careers and Van Halen.

8

CULTURE

What’s the first album you bought? Was it on vinyl, cassette or CD? Luke Kennedy The first album I ever bought was the Milli Vanilli All Or Nothing - US Remix Album on CD. Yikes! Matt Lee The first album I bought was Michael Jackson's Bad. It was on cassette. I wore it out along with the carpet in my bedroom from the constant rug-cutting that occurred on a daily basis. Ben Mingay Motley Crew’s Decade of Decadence. On CD!!! I made the purchase at Wallsend Plaza Retravision...Mum didn't understand. Michael Falzon First single I bought (on 45...) was Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police - which I ended up giving to my big sister for her birthday. My first LP (showing my age!) was Adam Ant! Not so embarrassing considering Luke's first purchase. What’s been your career highlight so far? Luke Kennedy My career highlight so far has been touring with Ricky Martin. He invited me to perform three songs with him each night on his Aussie tour last year, and I even got to enter the stage via a secret pop-up lift, aka ‘The Toaster’. Matt Lee I've been very lucky to work with some incredible artists so far in my career including Ricky Martin, Hugh Jackman and Paula Abdul. I've toured the world supporting Britney Spears and Savage Garden, but a definite highlight would be swinging about with these three other lads - Michael, Ben and Luke! Ben Mingay This is a tough one. It has to be split between performing for the Desperate Housewives in Dirty Dancing LA and singing the U.S. National Anthem for the Chicago Bears at Soldier field...in front of 60,000 people! Being on the tellie is pretty damn awesome too. Michael Falzon I'm very bloody lucky. There have been many! Playing Wembley is up there, as is performing with Queen. Hmm, yep, probably singing Bohemian Rhapsody with Queen would have to be number one.

theartscentregc.com.au

STAGE MUSIC

You’ve brought a Van Halen song into the swing genre – what’s another unexpected song you’d like to see ‘well swung’? Luke Kennedy We can swing just about anything. Maybe given my first album purchase we should be doing Blame It On The Rain? At least we’ll know who is singing it... Matt Lee There are a few Australian rock classics we've swung as part of the show. You'll just have to see the show to discover what they are, and once you hear them, you'll be swinging them all the way home! Ben Mingay I would like to see Your Mama Don't Dance and Your Daddy Don't Rock n Roll by Poison swung. I also fully support Luke Kennedy's suggestion of swinging Blame it On the Rain by Milli Vanilli, that would be very special indeed. Michael Falzon I've a particular fascination with swinging Aussie rock - we do a couple on the show already but there can always be more. Farnham or Chisel... ooh, or Aussie Crawl - Boys Light Up would definitely be interesting! Certainly not anything by Milli Vanilli. Why do you think swing is still popular after all these decades? Luke Kennedy Swing is so impressive because it’s at times full and complex, but it always seems to be only as complex as it needs to be. You can delve deep into what the big band is playing if that’s your thing, or simply sit there and sway along and tap your foot. Whatever your taste, swing has something for you. Matt Lee Simple, swing music is timeless which is why it is still so popular. With artists such as Robbie Williams and Michael Bublè bringing the genre into the 21st Century, it has given the songs a contemporary edge while all still remaining classic. Ben Mingay Because it makes you tap your feet! No matter who you are or what you know about music, you will be tapping your foot or clicking your fingers to any swung song.

theartscentregc.com.au

Michael Falzon We get asked this a lot. I've grown up listening to swing and it just has a way of sticking. Every now and then, someone lends a fresh take - which is what we try to do - and a whole new audience is born. The tunes are timeless and so long as we're respectful to the genre, OK, with some slight cheek and irreverence, people will enjoy coming back for more. What fun stuff do you want to do when you visit the Gold Coast? Luke Kennedy I’ve always wanted to drive an Indy Car. Is that on the cards? Matt Lee THEME PARKS! I'm a huge theme park junkie! I'm going to try to get to as many as I can! Ben Mingay I want to get a 3 Park Super VIP pass and go nuts! I also would like to hang out with my bro Matt Mingay and drive some fast cars! Also, if time allows I could be persuaded to go to Hollywood Showgirls... for the arts. Michael Falzon Having gone to high school in Brissy, I spent many a weekend down the Coast, so I feel quite nostalgic when visiting. While Surfers doesn't have quite the allure it did when I was a teenager, the beaches are the best in the world so you'll probably see me on one of them.

Grace Knight is one of the most enduring talents in Australian music. With Aria nominations and chart topping recordings in each of the past three decades, her career spans over thirty five years. Her spellbinding live performances touch the soul and lift the heart. She blew audiences away throughout the eighties as lead singer of internationally successful band Eurogliders. As a solo artist she lit up the screen in ABC TV’s Come In Spinner. A string of successful solo albums followed. During her jazz career, Grace has performed countless live shows including performances for five Australian Prime Ministers, President Clinton of the United States and Princess Diana.

Duo Armonico is an elegant and unique musical collaboration between two highly acclaimed soloists - Belinda Manwaring (cello) and Daniel Cunnington (classical guitar). In 2015, they will begin their 2015 concert series at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. OPPORTUNITIES

Space to create In November, we launched The Hub. This exciting new artist hub is a genuine step towards supporting innovative art making on the Gold Coast. With five hot desks and a high-tech meeting room, The Hub is a centre of contemporary practice. Each element can be hired separately by individual artists or together for larger operations. The first tenant is the Gold Coast Film Festival. Perhaps the greatest detail is that The Hub’s users do not need to have a performance outcome at The Arts Centre. This engages artists across all art forms, including literature, visual and digital arts. ‘We’re serious about supporting Gold Coast artists’,’ says General Manager Destry Puia. ‘We understand our strength as an Arts Centre comes from the innovative and bold relationships we have with the whole arts community.’ Gold Coast artist Rebecca Ross’ stunning installation is inspired by the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct overlay designs. The Hub can be hired through our website at www.theartscentregc.com.au.

OPPORTUNITIES

Your work on our stage Have you thought about creating your own theatre work? Our black box theatre The Space is the perfect place to stretch your theatrical wings. Last year, we staged four Independent Season productions in The Space, including the hilariously dark The Pillowman, the haunting Ruby Moon, the speciallycommissioned Hotel Beche de Mer and the wild road trip tale Mercy Thieves. These plays provided writing, acting, directing and behind-the-scenes opportunities for dozens of theatre makers from the Gold Coast and the wider South East Queensland region. We are now seeking expressions of interest for our 2016 Independent Season. Emerging and established independent theatre makers from the Gold Coast and surrounding regions including Brisbane and

beyond are encouraged to apply. If you have a full work in mind, great! We can support you to bring that vision to life with professional marketing, ticketing, technical support and more. Or if you’ve got an idea that needs some work, apply for our Works In Progress program. We’ll give you time, space and professional support to bring your creative vision closer to performance standard. Expressions of interest close Tuesday 30 June, 2015. Please visit www. theartscentregc.com.au/opportunities to download an application pack. Enquiries can be directed to Associate Producer Vicki Buenen on (07) 5588 4036 or buenen@ theartscentregc.com.au.

Works in progress and play readings A love story in progress In February, we’ll welcome back the fabulous Gold Coast theatre company The Blacklight Collective in a one-week residency as part of our Works in Progress program. Following their presentation of the development piece Astraeus in 2013, they will now spend an immersive week with us, further developing R&J Complex, which explores the missing pieces of Shakespeare’s most renowned love story. Planning for Sunnytown Another Works in Progress project taking residence in The Space in March is Krystal Sweedman’s Sunnytown. This piece is being developed in preparation for its inclusion in the La Boite Indie Season in October 2015. Sunnytown is a whimsical and terrifying look at the way we process trauma, and the consequences of choosing to ignore it. Are you game? Do you know teenage boys who spend too much time on their iPods? Bring them along to a free play reading of Bradley McCaw’s The Game by An Old Fashioned Production Company. This play is in development, and focuses on two brothers who are forced to put down the electronics and end up exploring a timeless world far, far away. Bradley McCaw is an award-winning playwright, composer and performer. Catch the free play reading of The Game on Saturday 28 March at 2pm in The Space. No bookings required

Cool, Calm and Collected Recent acquisitions from the Collection The Gold Coast City Gallery Collection has grown significantly in the last few years mostly due to a raft of wonderful donations from a number of generous donors. This exhibition seeks to highlight the breadth and depth of these gifts along with judicious purchases and competition winners. We remain grateful to Gallery Chairman Patrick Corrigan AM whose enthusiasm for the collection and encouragement of others has been the driving force behind many of the donated works. Artists have donated their own works and coincidentally a number of Archibald Prize finalists have been collected. These include Alexander McKenzie’s haunting portrait of actress Toni Collette which conveys the subject’s strength and sincerity as she holds a lifeboat, also suggesting the vulnerability inherent in a life of artistic pursuit. Garry Shead’s 2012 Archibald entry of long-time friend and fellow artist Martin Sharp is a fitting tribute to a highly creative and influential figure who sadly passed away in late 2013. Other significant artist donations include a suite of photographs from Shane Higson’s Attachment series, large landscape paintings by Guy Maestri and Neil Frazer, as well as abstract works by Ildiko Kovacs and PJ Hickman. Private collectors and Benefactors have also generously contributed groups of works that have boosted the Collection with the inclusion of highly sought after artists such as Arthur Boyd, Adam Cullen, Shaun Gladwell, Rosemary Laing, Richard Larter and Sidney Nolan. Noted collector of surrealist art Ray Wilson OAM has donated works on paper by the major Australian artist James Gleeson from the series Signals from the Perimeter.

theartscentregc.com.au

Given the large number of gifts received across a range of subjects and media, our purchases have been made with focused intent. Beach related works include Sebastian Di Mauro’s pro Gaius Marius from Scuta series made from wetsuit material while representations of the Gold Coast and history come from works by Edwin Bode, William Bustard and HC Simpson. The addition of these and many other works to the Collection stands us in good stead to present a diverse and engaging program of exhibitions and displays for future generations to enjoy. Gold Coast City Gallery is pleased to share our latest acquisitions in Cool, Calm and Collected, Gallery Two, until 26 January.

The Art of a Surgeon: Adam Rish The business card of practising Sydneybased cosmetic surgeon and artist Adam Rish reads: ‘Adam Rish – Misanthropist: For Disappointments phone ...’

Gold Coast City Gallery is pleased to host his touring exhibition Misanthropology: The World Art of Adam Rish from 31 January. Adam talks about his life and work. What did you want to be when you grew up? Taller. How would you describe your work to a complete stranger? My work is a mix of Surrealism and Funk made in collaboration with Indigenous artists. I depict suburban disasters (it is hard to be a middle class hero) so my pieces are like souvenirs of front-page violence tamed into soft, hybrid folk art forms. What's your background – what did you study to get to where you are? I have Jewish and Scottish ancestry and as a ten year old emigrated from England to

22

CULTURE

Tasmania. My parents were intellectuals and bohemian so I had a very liberal upbringing in an arty environment which scarred me for life. I studied medicine, despite being interested in painting, as in the early seventies art schools were very Bauhaus influenced and all you did was draw geometric shapes for the first year or so. I had exhibitions while at university and later had various arts residencies before completing my intern years. I later also studied art at East Sydney Tech, Sydney University and COFA at UNSW. What's the first thing career related you usually do each day? I do not like talking about art as a career as I feel it is a vocation. Far too many artists are frustrated by the notion of being a failure as there is very little career to be had. I tend to work in bouts so may not do anything for

months then when I start to feel bad I will get to it. I tend to work for exhibitions. If I cannot motivate myself to work I will go off to a new country and find a new village to work in. What is good about going “bush” is there is nothing else to do so you have to work. I only feel good when I am making things and when something new is happening it is the most exciting thing in the whole world. Can you describe an ‘average’ working day for you? I get up late as I am insomniac and have a coffee at ten. I tend not to eat until the late afternoon. On my medicine days I go to my office where I practise laser dermatology for twenty hours per week. On other days I will go to my sculpture studio in Maroubra and finish off some pieces or sit at home and do some new designs. I find more and more of my time is spent on the internet organising

EXHIBITIONS

exhibitions, publications etc. and wonder why? I usually work until midnight on various projects but always try and fit in a swim or some tennis. I like to visit galleries and see exhibitions but seem to miss so many. What is the best thing about your job? Having the ability to live a creative, imaginative life. What’s the most challenging aspect? Finding time to realise all my projects. What are the top three skills you need in this industry? Inspiration, perspiration and a good deodorant.

When do you know you’ve made it? The blank sheet of paper is covered with wonderful lines without me having the slightest idea of how they arrived there.

Saltwater Country visits Washington DC Acclaimed Indigenous artists are showcasing their talent internationally at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC. Gold Coast City Gallery’s Senior Curator Virginia Rigney reports from the USA.

The Saltwater Country exhibition celebrates Indigenous connection to the coast, sand and sea and was first seen by local audiences at Gold Coast City Gallery in July and August this year. The exhibition is the culmination of a number of years of development in partnership with Museums and Galleries Queensland and this overseas tour is a major milestone for us as it is the first time that our organisations have presented an exhibition internationally. As Co–Curator, I travelled to Washington DC to assist with the installation and public programs during the opening week. Travelling with me were three artists from the exhibition: Brian Robinson, Jimmy Thaiday and Ceferino Sabitino. Touring an exhibition always presents new challenges – from the logistics of just getting large and fragile artworks around the world to displaying them in new conditions. Readers may remember the magnificent large painting by Mavis Ngallametta which occupied the central wall in our gallery. While it was intended to be displayed vertically, we had realised that it was just 10cm too tall for the height of the gallery walls in Washington DC so it was going to

need an alternative solution! The staff at the Embassy worked in consultation with us and the artist to prepare a horizontal plinth so viewers could look down upon the work - the final result was just stunning. The opening event provided a great opportunity to engage with a large and enthusiastic audience of collectors, members of the diplomatic core and local museum curators. The artists and I were extremely proud to be able to share the exhibition with such an audience. Embassy staff tell me that they expect more than 8,000 people will view the exhibition in the lead up to Christmas, which is such a great opportunity to increase understanding about Australia and Queensland in particular. A highlight of our visit was talking to a group of very excited Grade Five Elementary students who are part of a program that the Embassy has developed to connect with local schools. Our stay also included opportunities to meet with Curators from the Smithsonian and to view their collections of Torres Strait Islander cultural artefacts that have remained in their store for over 100 years. In addition we made connections with artistin-residence programs and so we anticipate that these relationships will develop further.

Saltwater Country is a travelling exhibition developed in partnership between Museums & Galleries Queensland and Gold Coast City Gallery. Curated by Michael Aird and Virginia Rigney. Saltwater Country is supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory governments and has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland’s Backing Indigenous Arts program. The Gold Coast exhibition was proudly supported by Gold Coast Waterways Authority.   Image (top) Brian Robinson talking to elementary students at the Embassy. Gold Coast Art Prize

Cutback: Surfing Through Art

Known and unfamiliar, established and emerging, traditional and experimental artists will all be represented in this year’s Gold Coast Art Prize. Audiences can enjoy work by established artists Mostyn Bramley-Moore, Prudence Flint and Jenny Watson, alongside local artists Eric Koo and Leonie Rhodes. The selected artworks represent many of the key trends in contemporary art such as urban life, landscape and environment, digital technologies and globalism. Judge Dr Chris McAuliffe will select an overall winner to be announced at the exhibition opening event on Saturday, 6 December. The Gold Coast Art Prize continues until 8 February.

During the 1950s and ’60s, films such as Gidget (1959), The Endless Summer (1964) and Blue Hawaii (1961) popularised Surf Culture, as did surf bands like The Bel Airs, The Beach Boys, Dick Dale & The Del Tones and Jan & Dean. In doing so, stereotypes emerged, some of which lingers today. Cutback showcases the work of contemporary Australian artists responding to and exploring the art of surfing and alternative aspects of surf culture. Featuring: Chris Bennie, Shaun Gladwell, Andrew Kidman, William Mackinnon, Nanda Ormond, Ben Rak and Joel Rea. An exciting public program focusing on art and surfing culture complements this exhibition. Keep an eye on our website for details at www.theartscentregc.com.au/gallery and see page 31 for kids art activities as part of Cutback and Bleach* Jnr. The Art of Toast Gold Coast artist Seabastion Toast divides her time between painting, surfing and long-distance running. Toast's painting practice covers a wide range of subjects, underpinned by an interest in both cultural narratives and a life-long journey into light, form and colour. Her paintings often contain a darker subtext that runs parallel to the surface image as she investigates the grey areas between the black-and-white aspects of our society with all its totems, icons and metaphors. Toast is a finalist in the 2014 Gold Coast Art Prize and her thought-provoking paintings will also be on display in this Foyer Gallery exhibition in February. Save the date! Join us for a Meet the Artist event on Sat, 21 Feb at 3.00pm. Seabastion Toast is on display in the Foyer Gallery from 14 February until 22 March 2015. Jason Haggerty: Surface/Control Surface/Control explores the desire to control and master natural forces, in particular the potentiality of the inshore wave as an energy source to be harnessed by the human body. The wave, in regards to surfing, is more than just water. It is a mythical zone of curling, tunnelling walls; an ephemeral space built of natural wonder, existing for a split second, only to dissipate. Surface/Control simulates this space, repositioning and entangling the viewer inside a system that feeds on the body’s potentiality as a source of algorithmic energy. Surface/Control is on display in the Dark Room from 14 February until 22 March 2015. Image: Jason Haggerty, Surface/Control (detail). Courtesy of the artist

The Lost Treasure of the Cambus Wallace from Goat Track Theatre is an adventure-based drama, enrolling children in a roving performance and drama workshop, jam-packed with games, creative play and dramatic problem solving. A life and death fishing adventure played in a sea of foam hits the stage in March! Marlin is set to be a delight for children and their grandparents. Billy Grogan’s dad used to tell her life is wild and finds its own way home. But he never did. He went fishing for a marlin two years back and never came home. Now she lives with her granddad Tom, dreaming of the ocean and adventure while her life goes down the dunny. Then one dark and strange night, a miraculous marlin takes her and her granddad out past the reef, to the open ocean and the deep. Drifting far out to sea and into the night, the pair wrestle with forces beyond their control in their effort to save this enormous fish. But will either of them find their way back home? Inspired by classic seafaring literature, Marlin is set in the game fishing regions off Northern Queensland and is an adventurous tale for ages 9+ and their grandparents. This is an Arena Theatre Company production, developed and co-produced with the assistance of Melbourne Theatre Company. Part of the Bleach* 2015 Festival, Marlin is on Friday 20 March at 10.15am and 1.00pm, and Saturday 21 March at 10.30am and 1.30pm. A walk down the aisle Ten years ago Micarla met Colin when they were both working part-time at the local service station. They started dating on the fourth of October 2004, and exactly ten years later to the day, they tied the knot at The Arts Centre Gold Coast! Nowadays, Colin works in electrical systems design and Micarla works in business banking. They have been busy renovating their house and enjoy the outdoors, travelling, 4WDing, bike riding and swimming at the beach. The engagement In 2010 we went on a road trip to Airlie Beach, and on our very last day we stopped at Shute Harbour, which is where Colin got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Choosing the ceremony venue As I child I spent a lot of time at The Arts Centre, performing in dance concerts and enjoying various productions with my Mum. I remember seeing couples get married at Saint Margaret’s chapel, and I always dreamt that one day that would be me in the beautiful white dress marrying my prince charming upon the canal in the quaint little chapel. Choosing the reception venue The day we checked out the chapel, our Wedding Coordinator Nick Santy stayed back late in the evening to show us the function rooms. As soon as we stepped into the Panorama room, we knew that this was the

right place for us. We stayed in the room for some time and spoke to Nick about the packages, the flexibility and payment timelines. It didn't take us long to come back and lock in the date. Your venue wedding coordinator Every single dealing we had with Nick was pleasant - he was always contactable and he facilitated every request that we made. I cannot speak highly enough of Nick, he is such a nice person to deal with and he helped to make our wedding as seamless as it could possibly be. From giving me sample timelines, to sending photos of the cake knife and organising accommodation discounts for our guests, Nick went out of his way to provide the very best service. Was your special day everything that you had hoped? Oh yes, and so much more! We were surrounded by our closest family and friends and we had the most magical day. We were both smiling from ear to ear all day long and we would not change a single thing. I got to walk down the aisle with my father and

marry the man of my dreams then have the most beautiful celebration afterwards, what more could you want? The room was set up so beautifully, it was even better than I had imagined. And the food was amazing! We had people telling us all night (they are still talking about it) how much they enjoyed the day.

Curtain rises on Cultural Precinct Stage One The first stage of the city’s long-awaited Cultural Precinct will take centre stage ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™.

Funding to progress Stage One was delivered in the City Budget 2014-2015, signalling the city’s commitment to developing a cultural precinct of international standing. Stage One will be the ‘curtain raiser’ to a defining project for the city over the coming decade, underpinning efforts to support and strengthen the arts, culture, creative enterprise and cultural tourism for our city. By 2018 the City will have: • a versatile outdoor space for civic, artistic and cultural celebration, • a Riverside Gallery to store and display more of the city’s visual art collection, and • early outdoor Artscape works, including enhancements to Evandale Lake and landscaping connecting the versatile outdoor space and new Riverside Gallery.

40

CULTURE

Stage One will also progress the necessary studies, investigations, designs, plans and approvals to support future stages of the Cultural Precinct. It will also include detailed design and approvals for a Friendship Bridge, connecting the precinct with Chevron Island. Master planning of the overall site has also been underway, in partnership with the winning design team ARM Architecture + Topotek1. ARM Architecture’s competition design enables the precinct to be delivered incrementally as funding allows and to ensure facilities evolve to meet the most pressing needs. Stage One is an important first step. In 2018, visitors to the Gold Coast

will come to the precinct, enjoy a wide program of activities and events around the Commonwealth Games, and share the vision for future stages. When visiting The Arts Centre remember to visit the Touring Exhibition which showcases the winning design by ARM Architecture + Topotek1.
