Welcome. We’re thrilled to bring you the 2016 Season. This year we’ve chosen the theme, ‘emerge’, meaning ‘to become visible, apparent or prominent’. This simple word reflects so much — not only do ideas and opinions emerge from artistic provocation, but in another sense, it describes the way our city is culturally growing up. Some of Australia’s finest musicians, dancers, actors, singers and acrobats will grace our stage in 2016. This sophisticated programming makes high-end artistic experiences accessible for local audiences, while enabling the Gold Coast to emerge as a significant player on the national cultural map. The artistic life of the Gold Coast is in full acceleration mode. As the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct building works begin, we look forward to a fresh new stage as the cultural hub of our city. We hope you are uplifted, awakened, challenged and inspired by this year’s performances. Take journeys, travel to new worlds and walk in someone else’s shoes. Emerge from the theatre with new views, new perspectives and new takes on the experience of life.

by Ronald Hardwood

After wowing the world, retired opera singers Reggie, Cissy and Wilf have been put out to pasture in a country retirement home. Their chief concerns are scatty Cissy’s wandering memory, flirty Wilf’s obsession with dirty talk, and gentleman Reggie’s ongoing battle to get bloody marmalade with breakfast. What keeps the trio raging against the dying of the light is headlining the annual gala concert marking composer Verdi’s birthday. The serenity of their rehearsal room is shattered by the arrival of Jean: diva, celebrated soprano, fourth member of their quartet and Reggie’s ex-wife. Not that he’s thought about their horribly dysfunctional marriage in years, of course. Can these four put aside old grudges and re-team for one more show-stopping finale?

Quartet, also adapted as an acclaimed 2012 film, is a devilishly funny journey into old age told with tenderness, grace, hope – and above all, no self-pity.

Swedish Alexander Ekman’s witty and energetic piece, performed by the full Company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise you with its bracing physicality. The Australian proclaimed Cacti ‘… a delight: witty, effervescent, playful, surreal and joyously physical’, Time Out Sydney lauded its ‘infectious playful energy and absolutely incisive wit’. Rafael Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast: light and darkness emerging from a dusky sonic landscape by composer Nick Wales (long-term collaborator of Sarah Blasko). Movement follows deep, unexpected, visceral beats, and sharp, sudden twists to discover a dark place where there is space for beauty and light. Bonachela’s work, as always, is deeply emotional.

Othello A Bell Shakespeare production

A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brotherin-arms, the cynically destructive Iago. One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex contradictory nature of humanity is tested. Starring Ray Chong Nee (Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream and MTC’s I Call My Brothers) as Othello and Yalin Ozucelik (Bell Shakespeare’s Henry IV and STC’s Cyrano de Bergerac) as Iago in one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and devastating pairings, this astonishing epic tragedy will rage with jealousy on stages across Australia.

The 7 Sopranos 40

17 Febuary

The Arts Centre Gold Coast presents

The 7 Sopranos Valentine’s Tour Prepare to be taken on a musical journey through classic songs and moving operatic melodies. Seven beautiful soprano voices serenade fans with popular opera arias from La Traviata, Carmen, La Boheme, Phantom of the Opera as well as Nessun Dorma. The 7 Sopranos showcase voices of genuine beauty and virtuosity. They are a heady fusion of operatic divas from another era and showgirls of today, with a pinch of nostalgic Hollywood glamour.
