Chairman’s Report
On the 6th of December 1986 the doors to Gold Coast Arts Centre were officially opened. Fanfare and ceremony marked this historic occasion heralding a belief that this new facility could become the creative heart of the city, offering the chance to celebrate and participate in the cultural life of the Gold Coast.
years as President, Wendy Spencer stepped down from the committee following the Friends 2012 AGM. Wendy has been an avid arts champion and friend to many over the years and I thank her for her tireless contribution. I also look forward to working closely with new President Tim Cole and his Board over the coming years.
25 years later, the realisation of this aspiration can be seen through the continued growth of audiences and the diversity of artistic programming at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. From youth workshops to master classes, from preschool productions to our annual subscription season, from local emerging performers to international entertainment icons, all are testament to the courage and vision shown by our city’s forbearers all those years ago.
Our Benefactors continue to be our greatest supporters with their financial contributions being equally matched by the time and passion each give to The Arts Centre. In 2011 we bestowed the title of Perpetual Benefactors upon 9 of our art gallery donors who, over a number of years, have individually donated in excess of $250,000 of art works to the city’s art collection which is now valued at more than $16 million. Our Perpetual Benefactors includes Adam Knight, Dr Colin and Elizabeth Laverty, Tom and Sylvia Lowenstein, Evan Lowenstein, Ken McGregor, Adam Micmacher and Denis Savill.
On 6 December 2012 The Arts Centre Gold Coast launched its 25th Year Celebrations by unveiling 25 special events over 12 months. Free family concerts, premiere performances, exhibitions featuring works from the city’s collection, advanced movie screenings and food and wine events characterised this yearlong celebration and enabled the Gold Coast community to participate in the life of The Arts Centre like never before. As a result The Arts Centre experienced an increase in attendance of 12% (60,096) bringing the annual visitation numbers to 494,971 for the year. Record breaking cinema sessions, a growth in audience capacity to live performances and a significant increase in functions, meetings and conference attendees are all indicative of another successful year with 5,847 events. Gold Coast evolvement into an international city looks more likely than ever following the announcement of the successful bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. While understandably much attention has been given to the games themselves, the opportunities across all sectors of industry including the arts, now takes on a new sense of purpose. The development of a new cultural precinct to build upon the past 25 years success is a possibility that has been welcomed by our new city council and championed by our new Mayor and Board Director Councillor Tom Tate. As Chairman of the Board I continue to work alongside our General Manager Destry Puia, Friends of The Arts Centre Board and other community representatives in ensuring that this vital project remains a regional priority. The opening of this new exciting chapter for The Arts Centre was marked by the closing of another. After 16 years as a member of The Friends of The Arts Centre and the last 4
After 25 years, the valuable support of Gold Coast City Council remains stronger than ever and I would like to thank Council CEO Dale Dickson and previous Mayor Ron Clarke for their support and welcome Mayor Tom Tate and his fellow Councillors. I look forward to working alongside you all in the coming years and continuing the collaborative relationship between Council and The Arts Centre. I would like to thank the hardworking staff of The Arts Centre led by General Manager, Destry Puia. The team on all levels continue to strive for excellence and are a great sense of pride for the organisation. Our army of 215 volunteers are now involved in every facet of the organisation and we would not be able to deliver the high standard of service to our community without their efforts. Finally I would like to acknowledge my fellow Board members who give more of their time than any organisation should expect. The execution of their roles around and beyond the Board room table demonstrates a level of dedication that is both admired and appreciated.

General Manager’s Report
This annual report marks our 25th year and comes at the end of a very exhilarating 12 months. Our focus on local artist development began with the announcement of Soapbox Theatre Productions as the 2012 Artist in Residence. This program is now in its third year and includes the delivery of professional development support and business mentoring in addition to producing two new exciting works Sophie Is… and Chasing the Whale. Our relationship with Queensland’s flagship companies continued with community development programs including Opera for Over 50s with Opera Queensland, The Junior and Youth Theatre Residencies with Queensland Theatre Company, Behind Every Great Singer with the Queensland Conservatorium and Small Dances/Big Stories with Dancenorth. Creative partnerships with the 2012 Surfers Paradise Festival and the inaugural Bleach Festival resulted in the development of new theatre works presented outside the four walls of The Arts Centre as part of the festival programs. The year saw The Arts Centre return to producing large scale musicals with the world premiere of Pyjamas in Paradise by John-Michael Howson and Peter Pinne while our youth arts development program received a new lease of life with the launch of The Friends of The Arts Centre’s Youth Academy. This program partnered local talent with industry professionals from theatre, dance and musical theatre and involved 250 young participants throughout the year. I would like to thank past President Wendy Spencer and The Friends of The Arts Centre for their support of not only this program but the many other creative adventures that they have embraced throughout the year. The Subscription Season, now in its second year, once again featured some of the country’s leading companies while the Showroom played host to an eclectic array of performances. The Basement delivered regular comedy, jazz and cabaret performances and The Space continues to be the artistic playground that we had been missing for so many years. In total 32,875 people attended 216 arts performances and programs held at The Arts Centre.
the presentation of the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award 2010, a touring work featuring 46 finalists from 429 entries. The Foyer Gallery and the Dark Room provided the perfect spaces for mentoring local artists and group exhibitions while over 385 local artists were represented in group or prize exhibitions including the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize, The Border Art Prize, Energies and the Queensland College of Art Graduate exhibition. Now valued at over $16 million, the City Art Collection is a major asset for the community. Exhibitions based upon works from the collection included Face Up featuring a variety of portraits, Art on Art featuring works from a number of art institutions with 12 acquired sculptures and I Love My City Art Collection which was delivered as part of The Arts Centre’s 25th Birthday Celebrations and included 25 local identities selecting their favourite art works from the collection. The Arts Centre’s cinema program attracted 142,103 throughout the year and set a new cinema record for the highest grossing release for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and a new national record for the highest first week sales in the country for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The cinema also obtained the exclusive presentation of Academy Award winning film The Artist. I would like to thank the 113 staff in all areas of the organisation who continue to put the needs of our customers first. The dedication in which you apply your skills is a credit to you all. I would like to acknowledge the support of the Board of Directors and in particular Chairman Kerry Watson for his guidance and wisdom. The success of any company starts with great leadership at the highest level and The Arts Centre is living proof to this. I offer a sincere thank you to the countless artists and audience members who for 25 years have continued to ensure that The Arts Centre remains as vibrant and vital as ever and I extend a warm welcome to the future artists and audience members who will become part of our next 25 years.
Meanwhile in Gold Coast City Gallery 43,335 people attended 56 exhibitions and events which included exquisite wooden surfboards by Peter Walker, historically charged ceramics by Gerry Wedd, video art by Alana Hampton and Marion Drew and Aboriginal Arts from the Corrigan Collection. Presenting exhibitions of national importance continued via a partnership with the Seoul Museum of Art that resulted in the Australian Exchange Exhibition Korea: Re-Imagining the City while our partnership with Grafton Regional Gallery resulted in

Supporting Local Performing Arts Development
Regional Stages Regional Stages is a joint partnership between The Arts Centre Gold Coast and The Cultural Development Unit of the Gold Coast City Council for local artist development on the Gold Coast. This promotes The Arts Centre as an accessible venue by providing a range of professional development opportunities. The Creative Producer and Programming Manager worked closely with emerging Gold Coast and South East Queensland artistic companies and individuals, as mentors and co producers. Introducing new audiences to contemporary performing arts performed by leading local and state artists continues to be an important component of our programming philosophy. Building community access, connection and engagement with youth and emerging artists and performers activated and re stimulated under-utilised areas of The Arts Centre Gold Coast and other regional facilities. A great example of this was the commissioning for the production of The Surfer and the Mermaid. The Surfer and the Mermaid The Surfer and the Mermaid was a major project for 2012. The Arts Centre Gold Coast worked in partnership with Connecting Southern G.C. and Bleach Festival. This Partnership worked together to a children’s theatre play based on the book The Surfer and the Mermaid, a unique local publication. The play was adapted by author Tim Baker, using images by photographer Ted Grambeau. Music and soundscape were developed by local singer/songwriter Nadia Sunde, while Melinda Collie-Holmes directed actor Luke Townson in this production. The story of The Surfer does not end there. Stage one saw the project presented at Bleach Festival and The Arts Centre Gold Coast. A regional performance was also held at Mt. Tamborine in the Gold Coast Hinterland to engage an extended audience. The second stage included further development to prepare for a 26 performance season at Sydney’s Bondi Beach Pavilion. Surfer is under further consideration to be included in our Education program in 2013.

The Zoo Story The Zoo Story’s Gold Coast season saw the two characters played by local artists Luke Townson and Hayden Jones. Project development and rehearsals used The Space where final performances were also presented to our Gold Coast audiences. A regional performance took place at Goat Track Theatre, Mt Tamborine. This production of The Zoo Story will be put forward for consideration for further touring. Surfers Paradise Festival: Concrete Jungle The Surfers Paradise Festival only 3 years in the making is a major local arts festival based in the Surfers Paradise surrounds. Collaboration with the Surfers Paradise Festival and The Arts Centre through the artistic direction of Ben Veitch, enlisted local creative expertise to engage with an active audience by producing performance pieces where artists overlayed cultural experiences into an area, which had not previously been used in this way. Concrete Jungle was viewed as a progressive theatre experience, accentuating the pulse of the Surfers Paradise precinct. Staged at several locations, this guided experience highlighted the depth of talent and creativity in the Gold Coast arts underground juxtaposed with the concrete jungle of Surfers Paradise. Around 30 local performers and creatives were contracted to the project. Opera for Over 50’s This five day workshop was following on from, the incredible success of the 2011 program. We saw the centre engage with Opera Queensland to conduct workshop’s offered to members of the community aged 50+. Opera for the over 50’s was not purely about learning to sing, but developing aspects of stage craft, improvisation, singing techniques and stage direction. It incorporated warming up and vocal techniques; breathing exercises musical games; harmony work and fun. The concept was an adaptation of Opera Queensland’s successful youth program, “Moving Opera”. The showcase which completed the program provided an opportunity for family, friends and community to enjoy the achievements of the week.

Artist in Residence The AIR program is a key initiative of Regional Stages and the Gold Coast. Providing local theatre practitioners well needed infrastructure and support to carry out their activity. The program includes professional development, mentoring, and business planning. Following an application process Soapbox was awarded 2012 AIR. Through financial and in-kind support the company was to present 2 main works in conjunction with The Arts Centre. Performances included Sophie Is..an original work chosen as part of the Artslink Schools Touring program in 2012. We will also see later in 2012 the second performance, Chasing the Whale. Sophie Is...a theatre piece which inspires young people to examine and discuss their own stories of struggle and oppression in order to achieve greater confidence and control of their lives. Artist Development - Behind Every Great Singer In collaberation with Marissa Lee, professional expertise was drawn from QLD Conservatorium of Music who presented a workshop for singers, vocal teachers and coaches. Behind Every Great Singer provided professional artistic development for this appreciative group. Script Writing - Unnatural Selection Phase 1 and 2 Regional Stages provided funding to enable the delivery of a Playwright Development Program, which provided local playwrights with a workshop experience to develop their script. This program (exclusive to the Arts Centre), was delivered in 2 phases • Phase 1 selection and development of chosen scripts where participant’s worked with an established dramaturg who provided feedback and coaching aimed at building on the script. • Phase 2 selected Unnatural Selection which was given support in kind for further script development. Voice Fusion The Voice Fusion project partnered with the South-East Regional Music Department. The project was realised in partnership with Opera Queensland and came in the form of vocal based workshop which manifested itself in a combined 400-500 voice children’s choir on the mainstage. Youth Arts Academy
The Friends of the Arts Centre Gold Coast-Youth Arts Academy
Musical Theatre This twelve-day professional development program created an understanding and appreciation for music theatre. Young talented people from the ages of 15 to 21 explored singing, dancing and acting. This was a rare opportunity to learn from industry’s leading practitioners and discover what it takes to be a ‘triple threat’ performer. The Youth Dance Project The Youth Dance Project took the form of an intensive five day boot camp held in January 2012. Sessions from a nutritionist, physiotherapist, yoga teacher, stage make-up designer and artist’s agent, informed participants, overseen by Ben Veitch. A showcase was held at the completion of the residency. Forbidden Broadway - Fill this Space Forbidden Broadway was a Fill this Space initiative. This collaborative exercise answered the requirements of local musical theatre and performing arts enthusiasts by providing paid employment. The Cast were selected through an audition process. A Benefactor preview was followed by a successful season filled with smiling audiences and cast members. Small Dances/Big Stories Small Dances Big Stories was a 5 day workshop program provided by Dancenorth, who engaged with six at-risk youth who had attended programs provided by Inter Urban Arts. The students engaged in dance-theatre processes and were supported in exploring individual stories in a dynamic exchange between the professional dancer and the student. A public sharing by each participant left many who attended feeling deeply moved and inspired.

Junior Theatre Residency
QTC Junior and Youth Theatre Residencies For the second consecutive year the Junior and Youth Theatre Residencies saw The Arts Centre collaborate with Queensland Theatre Company to offer an opportunity for Gold Coast performers aged 7 – 14 years & 15 - 24 years. These residencies provided 5 days workshop to the participants offering a range of performance skills develop insights in to the industry from established professional facilitators. Forty participants attended the Junior Residency workshop. Content was challenging diverse and most importantly fun. Workshops included clowning - Ben Cornfoot, movement and physical theatre - Dan Crestani & acting technique - Amelia Dowd. A showcase was held for the family of the students on the final day with more than 105 in attendance. The Youth Residency was held from 3-6 July, 2012. Facilitators Carol Burns, Hugh Parker and Tim Dashwood came to this program with a depth of industry experience, covering approaches to text, analysing narrative structure, mapping the story, owning the space, connecting to the audience, movement and physical presence which enabled participants to showcase work of a very high quality. Each student who attended the Junior and Youth residency workshops was presented with a certificate of participation by General Manager, Destry Puia. Eyes to the Floor - The Youth Theatre Project Following an audition process, Youth Theatre Project 2012 successful applicants were:-Georgia Brennan (19); Brittany Muscatt (20); Tori Bailey(17); Valentina Diaz-Byers (18); Clara Aleckson (19); Rebekah Cornell (16); James Bolton (21); Brynne Morris (20) and Mackenzie Fearnley(18). Eyes to the Floor showcased a 5 performance season in early October 2012, which included a preview for Arts Centre Benefactors and Board members. The Cast received expert guidance under the professional direction of Andrea Moor assisted by Jessica Westhead, Artistic Director from Soapbox, The Centre’s 2012, Artists in Residence.

Pyjamas in Paradise
Pyjamas in Paradise The Arts Centre Gold Coast produced the World Premiere of Pyjamas in Paradise which opened on Friday 2 September, 2011. Pyjama parties of the late 1950’s and early 60’s put Surfers Paradise on the map, attracting young people to the coast and the Surfers Paradise holiday strip. Pyjamas in Paradise production carried with it local historical references. 2011 seemed to be the perfect time for an historically and culturally significant production to occur in the form of the world premiere of the latest John-Michael Howson and Peter Pinne musical on our stage. Not only because is it a musical, but a story integral to the historical fabric of this great city, the Gold Coast. Directed by Tony Bartuccio who‘s love affair with the Coast began when he was a young boy. When he was asked to direct a show that embraced ‘the quirky avant-flair of this amazing place,’ he found the offer too ‘irresistible to refuse! An outstanding cast including, Steven Tandy, Donna Lee, Peter Lowry and Jane Scali featured with our hard working local talent. The use of facilities for rehearsal, consolidation and final performance of this production showed that the Gold Coast really could put on a show. “Behind the scenes” we saw a local production offering a range of employment opportunities for young local performers and technical crew including lighting and costume, a great example of how a local production can keep talented locals in the industry working. Thanks and appreciation were extended to our financial supporters including Stuart Silver King and Burns, BBC Digital, I and R Electrical, Gold Coast McDonalds and Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, and our many private and corporate Benefactors, supporters and donors. Without corporate and philanthropic support presenting Pyjamas in Paradise at The Arts Centre Gold Coast would be an idea. We acknowledge, the Gold Coast City Council who continue to provide support to The Arts Centre Gold Coast and arts development in general across this great city.

Celebrating 25 Years
Celebrating 25 Years The Arts Centre Gold Coast celebrated 25 years of inspiring the Gold Coast community on December 6, 2011. The birthday marked a significant milestone in the Centre’s calendar and set forth a suite of activations, performances and exhibitions that would roll out during 2012. The 12 months that followed saw 25 events profiling each of the Centre’s venues and provided a wealth of opportunities for Gold Coast residents and visitors to not only watch but participate in as well.
The schedule of events included: 1. Tuesday 6 December, 2011, The Arts Centre Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke launch the celebrations with speeches and cake cutting. Special guest and previous General Manager Kelvin Cordell assist current general manager Destry Puia in cutting the cake. In attendance were community dignitaries and over 200 guests including Friends of The Arts Centre, Benefactors, patrons and media.
13. Monday 25 June. Event No. 13, Film Q&A. An Australian made independent movie was secured for this event and the response was so large that the screen and Q&A had to be moved to the Paradise Showroom. The Nullarbor Nymph Queensland Premier hosted the five main actors as well as a South Australian pre screening function with kangaroo meat pies, South Australian Oysters and Haighes chocolates. The Q&A was facilitated by Gold Coast Film Festival Director Casey Siemer Marshall. 500 attended.

The Arts Centre was inundated with nearly 3,000 members of the community on Sunday 25 March. All areas of the Centre were activated and feedback was extremely positive. Over 200 patrons entered the passbook competition. Relationships with the TAFE and dance schools provided a large numbers of visitors.

This event profiled the Centre’s newly created wine list and was a sell out! 19. Saturday 25 August. Event No. 19, Exclusive Benefactor Event - over 70 Benefactors and sponsors attended the exclusive invite only event at Sovereign Island home of the Glenister’s. Australian synchronised swimmers were part of the day. 20. Saturday 25 August. Event No. 20, Launch of Biennial International Ceramic Award.
9. Friday 20 April. Event No. 9, Voice Fusion. 10. Friday 25 May. Event No. 10, Opening night of I Love My City Art Collection exhibition. 25 celebrities from their chosen fields (including sport, media, art, academia) selected a piece of art form the City’s collection. The choices reveals some surprising insights and the exhibition provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the value and meaning of the collection for the city as a whole. On the night The Hilton’s FIX bar partnered with the event and mixologits presented two delicious cocktails as guests arrived. Nicole Dwyer from ABC Coast emceed and various selectors were interviewed as part of the nights festivities.
21. Saturday 1 September. Event No. 21, Three Chefs Do Lunch, an annual event on The Arts Centre Calender was included in the suite of activities. As part of the celebrations special guest Skye Craig former contestant on Master Chef and dessert extraordinaire attended and assisted on stage and helped cut the cake. 22. Thursday 20 September. Event No. 22, Movie Screening Event. The Art Cinema went red and sparkly for this event by premiering the movie Ruby Sparks and hosting a selection of local producers through market stalls in the Centre’s foyer. The event was a sell out.

Developing and presenting high-quality exhibitions to diverse audiences Throughout the year, 20 exhibitions were presented on site ranging from the exquisite wooden surfboards by Peter Walker alongside historically charged ceramics by Gerry Wedd; the latest in contemporary art installations from Marian Drew and locally based Alana Hampton as well as a survey of contemporary Korean Video Art and a stunning collection of Aboriginal Art from the Corrigan Collection. In addition to this two exhibitions Kuru Alala: Eyes Open and Ian Smith: On and Off the Road travelled collectively to twelve venues throughout the country.
A narrative of land, culture and colour filled the gallery when highlights from the Corrigan Collection of 21st century Aboriginal art were on display. In addition to his role as Chairman of the Gallery, Patrick Corrigan AM is an avid collector and arts benefactor. This exhibition from the Corrigan Collection celebrated the sophistication of modern masters from the Kimberley, Central Deserts and Top End, including Paddy Bedford, Sally Gabori, Eubena Nampitjin, Makinti Napanangka, Minnie Pwerle, George Tjungurrayi, Tommy Watson, Regina Wilson and more.
Initiating and presenting exhibitions of national importance Australia Exchange Exhibition: Korea-Re-Imagining the City: Contemporary Korean Video Art about cities and change was an exhibition from the Seoul Museum of Art presented as part of the Korean Australian Year of Friendship in response to Austalia-Digital Urban Portraits. Drawn primarily from the SeMA collection, this exhibition aimed to provoke thought about how the city is recognised and what relationship it has with the environment in the 21st century. Artists consider urban space not as materialistically composed of buildings, but space that is inseparable from the environment; continually accumulating historic events. The exhibition presented the artists point of view and how they transform an urban environment through imagination.

Presenting significant travelling exhibitions Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award 2010 The practice of drawing has emerged from the sidelines of art practice to become a vital and contemporary medium and this biennial exhibition organised by Grafton Regional Gallery is one of the best ways to see how contemporary Australian artists are working with drawing. The 2010 JADA included works by 46 finalists from all over Australia, who were selected from 429 entries and included works by Gold Coast artists Shalye Flesser and Wayde Owen. Mentoring local artists and displaying their work Predominantly through the use of the Foyer gallery and the Darkroom, Gold Coast City Gallery offers a regular program of solo exhibitions by local artists. Gold Coast artists have also featured in group exhibitions in the main gallery spaces. These exhibitions present significant professional development and exposure opportunities for artists, with catalogues produced and works of art being sold. Hosting public events also allows artists direct engagement with the community and media exposure. In addition over 385 local artists were represented in group or prize exhibitions including The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize, The Border Art Prize, Energies and the Queensland College of Art Graduate exhibition.

Presenting works from the collection in new ways Face Up: A Look at Portraits from the Collection Artists can bring intensive scrutiny to our notions of identity. This exhibition featured portraits and figurative works that show how artists grapple with the creative challenge of finding visual representation of the individual. How does an artist present the identity of their subject within a work of art? Is it through the gaze, the physical gesture, the colour, the background, or the context of the subject? Greg Weight’s portrait of Tracey Moffatt employs a mirror to distance the subject from the viewer, allowing an unbridled form of scrutiny. The subjects’ eyes in the mirror, however, confront the viewer – the subject is not solely a spectacle, but a spectator herself. This exhibition included works by Julie Rrap, Peter Smets, Adam Cullen, Michael Zavros, Joe Furlonger, Anthony Bennett, Davida Allen, Cherry Hood and many more. Art on Art Artists have long looked to the work of their contemporaries and back to their predecessors to draw inspiration. Through a highly considered selection of art works from a number of art institutions, Art on Art explored these links and interrogated the act of referencing other artists’ work and life. With a selfreferential gaze, the exhibition also pondered the Australian art scene and its’ doyennes. In 2011 the Gallery acquired 12 sculptures by mid-career Queensland artist Alasdair Macintyre. The works from this significant acquisition depict cheeky small-scale effigies of leading art figures, including John Olsen, Richard Bell and Rosalie Gascoigne. Art on Art also included works by Julie Rrap, Imants Tillers, Michael Zavros and more.

I Y My City Art Collection To celebrate the 25th birthday of The Arts Centre, Gold Coast City Gallery invited 25 people from across the community to select their favourite work of art in the City Collection for display. With over 3,000 works to choose from, the selection conveyed the diversity and strength of the collection, and exposed some absolute gems. This exhibition was a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the value and meaning of the collection for the city as a whole. Caring for and managing the Gold Coast City Collection The City Art Collection is a major asset for the city and the community and is valued at over 16 million dollars. New storage facilities were created utilising air-conditioned space behind the screen in Cinema One thanks to a Regional Infrastructure Grant from Arts Queensland that provided matched funding for this project and the replacement of the lighting system in Gallery two.

Background
Background
The Arts Centre Gold Coast was first envisaged in 1968 when a group of like-minded Gold Coast area citizens actively promoted the need for a first-class theatre and gallery complex for entertainment and the arts on the Gold Coast. This group was later registered in 1971 as the Cultural Centre Association and known as the Community Arts Centre Association (C.A.C.A). By April 1969 this group secured the Gold Coast City Council’s support for the development of an arts centre on Evandale Park next to Gold Coast City Council Chambers. The Centre opened in 1986 and was called ‘The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre.’ The Centre was run directly by Council via a sub-committee. In 1993, a Board of Management was established and the Gold Coast City Council changed the name from The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre to the Gold Coast Arts Centre Proprietary Limited as a separate legal entity. During this time the entertainment program was expanded, the city’s first Arts Cinema was created, foyer space was increased, with a new bar area, the Arts Café was constructed and a new lobby retail shop opened. In March 2010, the Gold Coast Arts Centre was renamed, rebranded, refurbished and relaunched as The Arts Centre Gold Coast, as part of an ongoing change in strategic direction. The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) is a registered trading name of Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd. On 6 December 2011 The Arts Centre Gold Coast celebrated its 25th Birthday.

Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd is the statutory body that operates The Arts Centre Gold Coast with Gold Coast City Council as the sole share holder of the Company. The Board of Directors consists of 7 members appointed by Council. The Arts Centre Gold Coast is the Gold Coast’s premier cultural facility, bringing visual and performing arts to residents of South East Queensland. The complex houses the Arts Theatre (with 1,139 seats), Gold Coast City Gallery, the Paradise Showroom, two cinemas and the Arts Café as well as several stunning function rooms, a chapel and two small performance spaces, The Basement and The Space. Gold Coast City Gallery houses the renowned city collection of contemporary and historical artworks. The Board of The Arts Centre Gold Coast is custodian of the City’s art collection valued at approximately $16 million and has management responsibility for the activity worth approximately $11 million undertaken in The Arts Centre employs 39 full time staff, 3 permanent-part time staff and over 74 casual staff.

Born and educated in Queensland, Kerry Watson began his career in stockbroking and merchant banking before returning to the Gold Coast to establish the Quality Inns Group with the Graham family. Kerry was involved in the commencement of Japanese and Asian tourists to Australia.
Patrick Corrigan began his career in the freight industry in the 60’s and by the mid 70’s he was head of several freight companies which participated in the phenomenal expansion of the freighting industry in Australia and overseas. Pat began his love affair with collecting art and art books in his 30’s and his library is recognised as one of the finest private library collections of its type in Australia. Pat says that the main thrill of collecting has always been the hunt and acquisition of rare items, rather than possession of them once acquired. Pat has been donating art to public galleries for many years and his involvement with the industry remains strong. In 2000 he was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to the arts and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Bond University. He is a life member of the State Library of Queensland,The Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Association of Visual Arts. Pat is married to Barbara and they have a daughter and three sons. In July 2010 Pat and Barbara were bestowed the title of inaugural Life Benefactor of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, in recognition of their meritorious services in enhancing the Gold Coast City’s Art Collection.
After the sale of the Quality Inns Group, Kerry commenced a consulting business through his company, Pacific Global Corporation with clients including Marriott International Australia and the Queensland Government through Events Queensland Gold Coast. Kerry is currently Chairman of Events Queensland Gold Coast (Gold Coast Marathon and Pan Pacific Masters Games) and Gold Coast Tropicarnival Ltd – Gold Coast Eisteddfod, as well as Executive Advisor – Japan for Tourism Australia and an Honorary Life Member of Gold Coast Tourism. He has previously held positions as Deputy Chairman of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation (now Tourism Queensland), Chairman of the Inbound Tourism Organisation of Australia (now Australian Tourism Export Council) and Director of the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau and Gold Coast TAFE. Richard Munro Bus. CPA, MAICD Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Chairman Finance, Philanthropy, Assets and Risk SubCommittee - Appointed to the Board in 2008 Richard has been in Public Accounting Practice on the Gold Coast since 1994, including his position as partner at Munro Accountants Gold Coast. Past roles include committee positions on various business and sporting organisations including past President of CPA Australia, Gold Coast Branch. Most recently Richard became a member of the Board for the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Diploma Course covering Corporate Governance. His extensive experience gained in working with many South East Queensland businesses and associations means that Richard brings a high-level of expertise and strengths in financial and strategic management to the role of Deputy Chair of the Board of The Arts Centre Gold Coast. While Richard’s specific interests have generally revolved around business and sports, his family has participated in a number of Summer Schools at The Arts Centre over the years, giving him a strong appreciation of the benefits the arts bring to the community.
Judith Ferber Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2007 Chair Marketing, Programming & Sponsorship Sub-Commitee Judith has been a Gold Coast resident since 1967 when she worked at the Gold Coast’s first radio station 4GG and then in the entertainment department for the Chevron Group of Hotels. In 1982, together with business partner, the late Paul Sharratt, Judith ran the first Gold Coast Festival, Tropicarnival. The pair co-ordinated many other events and also produced Logie Award, winning shows for QTQ Channel Nine during the 1970’s. Tropicarnival was a two-week celebration featuring over 200 events and ran every October for 20 years. Tropicarnival won a Queensland Tourism award for best Regional Event. The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was part of the Festival and continues to this day, becoming the largest Eisteddfod in the country. Judith has coordinated several major events for the Gold Coast community including Christmas Carols, New Year’s Eve Celebrations and the Gold Coast City Council’s Australia Day activities. In 2004, she won the major award in the Gold Coast Bulletin Honours for Services to the Community. Judith is General Manager of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and a Board member of Gold Coast City Council’s Events Advisory Committee. She has two daughters and three grandchildren who also live on the Gold Coast and enjoys a busy life with partner Bryan Durham.

Alan Hayes B.Des.St, B.Arch. (Hons) Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2009 After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1979, Alan practised architecture on the Gold Coast for 18 months, specialising in fast-track documentation, before taking up the A.E. Brookes Travelling Scholarship which was awarded on graduation. This enabled a 12-month stay in Europe during which he worked with The Halpern Partnership in London. On his return to the Gold Coast he joined Silver Goldberg Hamilton and gained further fast-track experience working on the Paradise Centre. At the time, this was the largest urban development project in Australia and required special enabling legislation passed by the State Government. By completion of this project Alan had become an Associate and then Director of the company, which duly then changed the company name to Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects. The firm celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008 and continues to shape our built environment. Alan strongly believes that good design shapes our attitudes, both individually and collectively, and that The Arts Centre has a pivotal role in increasing design awareness on the Gold Coast. Christine Lohman MBA FPRIA FAICD Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2010 Christine Lohman currently serves as a director on the boards of Workcover Queensland, Sisters of the Good Samaritan Foundation, and member of St Vincents Australia Health Limited Queensland Advisory Committee. Past directorships include St Vincent’s and Holy Spirit Health Limited, Board of Governance for St Pauls, The Brisbane College of Theology, The 1994 World Masters Games, The Office of Economic Development for the City of Brisbane, Tourism Brisbane and several not for profit organisations. Until recently she provided professional counsel to the Board of Gladstone Ports Corporation and was a member of the Queensland Government Clean and Healthy Air for Gladstone Industry Reference Group. She holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Queensland, has completed the AICD Directors Course and has achieved the highest level of recognition her industry can bestow as a Fellow of the Public Relations Industry of Australia. Christine is also credited as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

owned and operated one of Queensland’s leading public relations companies which formed part of a national group advising major ASX listed companies and government. Her connection with the Gold Coast goes back to the early 80’s when her client Jennings Limited secured a licence to operate a casino. From inception she worked on the project managing government relations and marketing for what was then Australia’s largest public float (IPO). Her company continued to provide specialist investor relations assistance to the Board of Jupiters Limited until its takeover by Tabcorp Holdings Limited. She was an integral part of a team that won for Jupiters a contract to develop and manage the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. Her company consulted to numerous major construction projects on the Gold Coast and managed the investor relations campaign for the public float of Sea World Limited. Naomi Middlebrook ATCL LTCL CSCA Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2008 Over the past 30 years Naomi has worked in all aspects of performance and communications. Her love of theatre started from an early age and she began working in community theatre on the Gold Coast in the mid 70s. In 1980 she relocated to Sydney where she studied acting. After a number of years as an aspiring actor Naomi completed teaching qualifications and returned to the Gold Coast where she established one of the first private drama studios. Naomi has taught extensively in the school system and currently works as a drama and communication specialist at All Saints Anglican School on the Gold Coast, a position she has held for almost two decades. In addition to this she regularly consults as an acting coach in the film and television industry and at a corporate level, and as a mentor teacher for new drama and communication teachers. Naomi is passionate about the Gold Coast and embraces all the city has to offer, in particular the cultural and outdoor facets. She has been a long-term member of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod movement and is a motivating force behind youth in arts on the Gold Coast.
Christine has an extensive background in corporate communication and strategic planning in both the private and public sectors and brings to the Board a high level of communication and corporate governance expertise. Destry Puia General Manager
Conan Dunning Customer Services Manager
Destry has extensive experience within the arts and government sector, having worked for a variety of organisations including independent theatre companies, large metropolitan arts organisations and regional and metropolitan councils. Prior to taking up his current appointment, Destry was the General Manager for The Events Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Destry guided this organisation through a significant artistic and strategic redevelopment which resulted in an increase in attendance, participation and financial returns. Prior to this, Destry was Director of Arts and Cultural Services for Kingston City Council in Melbourne and was a previous committee member of the Arts Industry Council of Victoria.
Before taking up the challenge of Customer Services Manager at The Arts Centre, Conan was the Operations Manager at The Lakeshore Theatre in Chicago where he transformed the venue both structurally and philosophically from a Broadway roadhouse into the only venue in the world that presents ‘Comedy as Art’. Conan has a deep understanding of theatrical performance, touring, arts entrepreneurship, sales and management. His formal training includes a Bachelor of Arts – Theatre Studies from QUT and a Master of Arts, Entertainment and Media Management from Columbia College in the United States.
Destry is currently President of the Northern Australian Regional Performing Arts Centres Association (NARPACA), the key peak body responsible for collaborating with the Queensland Government on venue management challenges, arts industry matters and regional touring strategies. Other previous Board appointments include Regional Touring Panel Member for the Helpmann Awards, Executive Committee Member for APACA (Australian Performing Arts Centres Association) Non Executive Committee Member for PATA (Performing Arts Touring Alliance) and Panel Member for Ausdance Queensland Destry has an Arts Degree in Social Science and in 2006 was a regional winner of the Young Manager of the Year by the Australian Institute of Management. Destry is married to Poppy and they have three beautiful daughters Taylor, Manaia and Kyra. Jamie Stahl Venue Operations Manager With over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Jamie brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and understanding of the performing arts and venue management. Prior to taking the position of Venue Operations Manager at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Jamie spent 15 years as the Venue Operations Manager at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC). Prior to that appointment, he was located on the Gold Coast working in his father’s business, Bernie Stahl Management and Gordon & Stahl Touring. As a senior manager at GPAC, Jamie was responsible for asset planning and major capital works projects, including a $3 million redevelopment of the 800-seat Playhouse Theatre involving close collaboration with the Victorian Government and Geelong City Council, on the Cultural Precinct Master Plan. Jamie was Chair of the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centre Technical Managers Network for over four years and during this time the network developed and implemented procedures which were subsequently adopted by all Victorian venues.
His practical experience initially involved writing, directing, producing and performing for the stage throughout Australia, Europe, Asia and the United Kingdom. The ability to attain non-earned revenue through bodies including the Australia Council, Arts Council England, Youth Arts Queensland and his ability to lead teams in the pursuit of sales ultimately shaped his customer-focused arts management career. Kathy Knott Development Manager Kathy has more than 25 years experience in fundraising, sponsorship management and corporate communications gained in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Kathy’s positions in New Zealand included Head of Events for a major bank, Public Relations manager for a museum and Senior Events Marketing Manager for an international public relations consultancy. She was also co-director of her own Public Relations consultancy, specialising in business/ community partnerships for corporate and non-profit clients. In 1998 she was appointed Olympic Sales and Marketing Manager for a Sydney 2000 Olympic Games sponsor and subsequently managed the arts portfolio for an Australian airline. In 2001 Kathy moved exclusively to the non-profit sector as Development Manager for the newly created Queensland Orchestra and then as Development Manager for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Working in the UK, Kathy raised funds for the International Fund for Animal Welfare and after returning to Australia she held senior fundraising roles with the Mater Foundation and Opera Queensland. Kathy is an Executive Member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia and is a workshop presenter for the Australia Business Arts Foundation, presenting seminars to arts professionals on fundraising and philanthropy. She has a Masters Degree in Philanthropy and Non-Profit Studies from the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Non-Profit Studies at QUT and received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in 2009.

Lynda is a Member of the Chartered Secretaries (Australia) and holds professional qualifications in Corporate Governance as well as having an HNC (expand) in Public Administration, Diploma in Management and ONC (expand) in Business Studies. Her experience includes more than 32 years in finance, human resources, contract management, payroll, administration, company secretarial and customer services experience.
Sue-Anne moved to the Gold Coast at the commencement of the Marketing and Partnerships Manager role in January 2010 and thoroughly enjoys the Coast lifestyle. She is an avid reader and has a passion for travel and adventure.
Lynda joined The Art Centre from the Commonwealth funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) based at Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus where she was employed as General Manager, Corporate Services and prior to this role, as Business Manager. The Centre was closed on 30 September 2010 in accordance with the Commonwealth Agreement after 13 years of operation and 2 successful terms of funding. Prior to immigrating to Australia in 2001, from the UK, Lynda worked in Local Government for over 23 years, holding positions at management level for over 15 years and was Departmental representative on various Human Resource and Development working committees. Cheryl Jorgensen Programming Manager Following 13 years as a primary school teacher and five years at home with her son, Cheryl started work at the Mackay Entertainment Centre in 1989 as a Box Office Attendant. Advancement saw her undertake the roles of Box Office Manager in 1993, Box Office and Administration Manager in 1997, Acting Director in 1999, Director/Manager in 2000 and finally Operations and Events Manager in 2008, a position she held until retirement in July 2009. In August 2009, Cheryl came out of retirement to undertake a project for Arts Qld, establishing the new Queensland Touring Service now called Artour. In April 2010 she accepted the role of Programming Manager at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. She is married with one son and enjoys reading, jazz and blues and travel. Sue-Anne Chapman Marketing and Partnerships Manager Before leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra through a major rebrand in 2009, Sue-Anne Chapman was Operations Manager for the Gold Coast Titans and the Marketing and Promotions Manager for AFL Gold Coast. Sue-Anne has worked as a PR and Marketing Officer for State Government departments and has significant experience in rolling out large scale marketing campaigns, developing subscription
John Walsh Gallery Manager John has worked in the public gallery sector since the 1980s with his first appointment being at the National Gallery of Australia in the Australian Art Department. In 1989 he became Assistant Director of Wollongong City Gallery, a position he held for seven years. Since 1996 he has been Gallery Manager of Gold Coast City Gallery and is currently President of the Board of the Regional Galleries Association of Queensland. Over the years John has curated and coordinated numerous exhibitions from a variety of sources. He has worked with artists engaged in a diverse range of media and in all stages of their careers and produced numerous publications including catalogues for many of the exhibitions he has been involved with. Jason Solman Functions and Events Manager Jason is a dedicated hospitality professional with tertiary qualifications in Hospitality Management and Events Management. He has over 21 years of industry experience working in a wide variety of organisations, including time as a Club Manager, Gaming Manager and Hotel Manager. Jason was responsible for the initiating the industry-recognised 3 Chefs Do Lunch annual event and was a member of the organising committee for Taste of Gold Coast - Food & Wine Festival over 8 years for the Gold Coast City Council. Jason currently holds the position on the Board of the Restaurant Industry Support Gold Coast and has led The Arts Centre Gold Coast Functions team to win the Restaurant and Caterer’s Association’s Regional Event’s Caterer award every year from 2004-2009, as well as the State Event’s Caterer award in 2009. Jason has lived on the Gold Coast for 17 years, and has an appreciation for good food and fine wine.
