the arts centre gold coast Welcome We are proud to launch our inaugural Fiesta de la Musica (page 13), celebrating the best of classical music, opera and ballet. Enjoy a smorgasbord of classics with this range of ticketed and free events. There’s everything from maestro information sessions, opera auditions and lunch time concerts, right through to performances by both local and some of Australia’s leading classical musicians. One of the Gallery’s most anticipated events each year is the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award (page 6). Both established and emerging photographers are showcased, resulting in a stunning exhibition with wide appeal. Love dance? Want to see our stage flooded in water? Experience the mesmerising contemporary dance production of Lake (page 34). Three incredible dancers grapple with our fear and fascination with water in this major new Australian dance work. Out of all the arts experiences on offer, the one we’re most excited about is Jesus Christ Superstar (page 44)! Come and support outstanding local talent in this musical spectacular, fully produced by The Arts Centre Gold Coast. See you at the show.

Renegades: Outsider Art Until Sun 27 Apr Gallery 2 ‘Outsider’ art comes from a spectrum of makers: studios supporting people with intellectual disabilities, community care centres, psychiatric settings and outer geographical reaches, or from purely free spirits. These ‘unlikely’ makers brim with creativity without academic instruction, connections to commercial or public art galleries, marketing, critics or art schools. Curated by Camille Masson-Talansier.

Renegades: Outsider Art is a KickArts Contemporary Arts touring exhibition created in partnership with Arts Project Australia and funded by Visions of Australia, an Australia Council for the Arts initiative.

The Pillowman

The Pillowman is a jet-black comedy by Irish playwright / screenwriter Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths). The play won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2004. Set in a police interrogation room in a totalitarian state, a writer is questioned over the content of some short stories which bear an uncanny similarity to real-life murders. This provocative piece uses razor sharp dialogue, comedy and modern absurdism to have the audience laughing hysterically at the most inappropriate of times.
