ou know how most of us get embarrassed when it comes to talking about toilet in public. I mean, I remember the other day when I was discussing about having a terrible stomach upset with one of my office colleagues, this another

friend overheard our conversation and made such a disgusting face by judging me for sharing the details

of my poop. Like that’s what most of our “Tatti Talks” lead to or the max is we use end up using the word like a friendly abuse. But same is not the case with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, who were actually such a sport when I got them to take me inside their Toilet, EXCLUSIVELY on BollywoodLife. Yes, this happened! Considering Akshay and Bhumi are out with their film titled Toilet Ek Prem Katha that deals with the issue of open defecation, I got both of them to get into BollywoodLife’s “Tatti Talk Challenge”. Basically the actors had to answer everything about what one does in the Toilet within 5 seconds and boy, it turned out to be so damn hilarious! ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ movie review roundup: Critics are divided over the writing of Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon comedy Such polarising reviews for a film in the longest time?

W

e have to laud Bollywood for finally investing in commercially viable stories from the small towns. This year, many films were set in the small towns and villages of India and featured characters with a certain rustic charm about them. The latest one is today’s release, Bareilly Ki Barfi. Director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari has proved that she can weave a sustainable story without the glitz and glam of a metropolitan city with Nil Battey Sannatta, and with BKB, she does it again. The romantic comedy stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. The movie opened in theaters today, but the critics had already let their

verdict out yesterday, after attending a special screening of the film, organised by the makers. And Bollywood has not seen such polarising reviews for a film in the longest time. Seriously, the movie has been awarded from one to five stars by various critics in their reviews. As we always say, audience gets the final vote, but still here is what the critics are saying about Bareilly Ki Barfi… From BollywoodLife, Sreeju Sudhakaran watched the movie and enjoyed it. In a 3-star review he wrote, “Bareilly ki Barfi boasts of a delightful first half, but a weak second half. But some really funny writing and terrific performances by Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana, along with a brilliant supporting cast, add sweetness to the narrative. While it may not get high marks in its screenplay, it definitely is one of the better rom-coms of the year.” NDTV wrote, “Bareilly Ki Barfi is definitely worth a watch provided you do not expect the world from it. It is happy to be what it is: a modest barfi from nondescript Bareilly. A bite wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Reddif was in awe of the script and wrote “The script has an energy that seems to have sent all the actors over the rainbow and out they slide from the other end, with their characters’ daze firmly fixed inside them.” India Today, too, found the film to be

delightful. “After Nil Battey Sannata, director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari brings us another engaging watch. There is no dull moment in the film. Light and fluffy, Bareilly Ki Barfi is no heavy seven-course meal, but it is quite the delicious dessert,” they wrote. Times Of India was also in love with the writing and said, “The writers Nitesh Tiwari

(director and writer of the much-acclaimed blockbuster Dangal) and Shreyas Jain have put together a sweet, identifiable crowdpleaser that excels in the writing, direction, acting and music departments.” The Indian Express in a 2.5 star review wrote, “This Small-Town Rom Com ticks all the boxes going in: perky girl armed with requisite quirky parents, a couple of suitable

boys, and great one liners. And it does work in fits and starts, but it flattens equally in between.” Firstpost ripped apart the movie into pieces in their 1-star review, and wrote “BKB’s male leads are victims of half-hearted writing, lost to the most inconsistent characterisation I have seen in a Hindi film in a while. The motivations for their actions are unconvincing.”

The union of cine employees, hence, followed their decision and went on the strike. This has resulted into not just delays but cancellations of many shoots. Not just KBC, but the strike affected the shoot of movies like Padmavati, Parmanu and Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Aanand L Rai, too. Mumbai’s Film

City, Filmistan Studio, Future Studio, Click Nickson, Cinevista Studio and all shoot locations in Madh Island, Mira Road and Naigaon have been shut for now. Shoot of almost 40 TV serials in Hindi and Marathi along with 10 Hindi film shoots are on stake. Back in 2015 too, FWICE had gone on a strike; demanding salary increment, eighthour shift, accidental and medical insurance, safety and job security. The producers’ body had agreed to fulfill the demands but according to FWICE President Birendra Nath Tiwari and General Secretary Dilip Pithawa, their promises haven’t been met till date. During that time also there was no shoot for almost a week and channels had to telecast old episodes of TV serials with no ad breaks.

2017 Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary

eep has taken the sport utility vehicle market by storm in the last 10 years. Now, I realize I just offended 90% of Jeep owners everywhere by not calling the

Granted, Jeep did install an epic sound system to make up for it, but you can’t always have your music blasting all of the time. The window controls drove me absolutely bonkers. Jeep placed them right in the middle of the dash between the vents and the buttons are hooked over on a very odd angle. I understand the need to not keep them in the

V6 in 2012 to replace the 3.8L in the previous model years. To be honest, I really miss the 4.0L inline HO 6-cylinder engine from the earlier models. The 3.6 liter has plenty of torque but really lacks horsepower. It really shows when passing or merging on the highway. Anything over 4,000 rpm and the engine seems to fall on its face. Available in both a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, I much prefer the manual. The clutch is fantastic, as there’s lots of feel through the pedal; first gear is a great low gear for climbing. However, I think the transmission is mounted directly to the suspension because if I drove over any bumps or sewer covers the shifter was shaken out of my hand. So violently in fact that I actually crawled underneath to make sure the transmission mounts hadn’t sheared off. The ride was exactly what I expected from Jeep; soft and supple with lots of travel. And just as expected, the body roll was pretty substantial. Emergency lane changes or animal avoidance may result in an upside-down Jeep and a very unhappy Aman. Overall, the 2017 Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary is pretty much exactly what I expected. An unreal off roader that compromised luxury for function. Now, I do realize that this may be coming off as

Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s younger sister ticked all the checkboxes when it came to the qualities a quintessential Bollywood actor needs — good looks, famous sibling and a dream debut. But, the Yash Raj film, Mohabbatein (2000), failed to propel her to stardom. “The industry is a tough place to be part of,” she says 17 years later. After a short stint as interior designer, Shetty returns to acting with the web show, Yeh Ke Hua Bro, for Voot. Calling this series synonymous to working on her first film, Shetty reflects on her failures and eternal wait for the “right role.” Excerpts from the interview: What prompted you to take up a web series? We are living in a digital age and people are experimenting with interesting scripts [online]. So, it is the right time to be a part of it. While the shows taught me a lot, I’m still waiting for something good to come my way. But, the industry is a tough place to be part of. Success doesn’t last forever, and failure changes you. ‘Channel has a strategy’ Ghulaam producer says team surprised by decision to axe the daily, but hopes to return with a fresh outing LETTY MARIAM ABRAHAM letty.abraham@mid-day.com GHULAAM had zeroed in on actor Ekta Kaul to headline the thriller, which depicts the pitiful condition of women in Berhampur. The show, which kicked off in January, had come under the spotlight for the apparent tiff between the then lead actors, Vikas Manaktala and Niti Taylor, and Kaul’s entry, it was speculated, would mark the end of the latter’s stint on the show. However, before the inevitable war could spiral beyond control, the channel, Life OK, decided to axe the daily. Co-producer Rahil Qazi says it has little to do with flaring egos. “The channel is set for a revamp,” he says, adding that while the show was originally meant to be part of the new line-up of serials, the channel decided to pull the plug on it. “We were shocked to hear of the developments, but they have a strategy in place and we have to abide by it.” Cast member Param Singh says, “We had done a look test with Ekta and w e r e

Ekta Kaul and producer Rahil Qazi aware of how the show was set to progress,” he says as he questions why a channel would invest in auditioning for a new character and amend the script if they wished to end the show soon. Running a daily means feeding a lot of mouths. The Jim Pattison Group is developing plans to build a 400-room hotel and indoor waterpark resort in B.C. with potential sites identified in both Surrey and Squamish. “We still need to see if this is a project that will work in Surrey and we’ve publicly pursued a site in Squamish as well,” said Michael Lee, vice-president of Jim Pattison Developments.

The site is rumoured to be a property held by the city near 192nd Street and 16th Avenue. Pattison has also pitched Squamish council on an identically sized resort proposed for a site the company owns on Aspen Road, which would require buying some adjacent land. “Pattison Group made a pitch to council about a year ago and they thought (Squamish) was a good location for the resort and they were pretty committed to the area,” said Acting Mayor Doug Race. The project would require Pattison to acquire a district road right-of-way and provincial Crown land to complete the parcel, Race said. While the resort would double the number of hotel rooms in Squamish, it would also require hundreds of employees in a town already hit by labour shortages, he said. “Great Wolf Lodge doesn’t really provide much as a public amenity,” said Race. “They made it very clear this would not be a place you could drop the kids off for an hour to swim. They operate on a cruise-ship model where they get their guests in and keep them there spending money.”

The index, released Monday, shows Toronto prices actually rose 2.1 per cent from June to July and national prices were up two per cent from a month earlier. The Toronto results, at first glance, appear out of sync with Toronto Real Estate Board results which show prices have declined almost 21.5 per cent from a peak hit in mid-April before the province put in measures like a foreign buyer tax to cool the market in and around the city. But Marc Pinsonneault, an economist with National Bank, said his index needs to be examined more closely and, as his firm went out of its way to explain in a note, that the index reflects a three-month rolling average, or what it calls a ‘smooth index’.
