Port Mann & Golden Ears bridges toll free from September 1 BC NDP government is getting rid of tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges starting Sept. 1, Premier John Horgan has announced. Horgan made the announcement in Port Coquitlam on Friday morning, following through on one of the key planks of the NDP election campaign this spring. “These tolls are unfair to people who live in the Lower Mainland and to people who live in particular areas of British Columbia. If you live in Kelowna, you don’t pay tolls to cross a bridge, Horgan said. “You shouldn’t have to pay tolls because of where you live. The NDP government estimates the move will save people who
commute over the Fraser River an average of $1,500 each year. Commercial drivers who cross the bridge daily could save $4,500,

Horgan said remaining debt from the Port Mann will be transferred to the provincial debt. It will cost taxpayers an additional $135 million for the next few years to cover lost revenue from the bridge. The province is currently in discussion with TransLink to determine how to make up for

Mobs rampaged across a north Indian state on Friday, leaving 33 people dead and more than 250 others injured, after a court declared a quasi-religious sect leader guilty of raping two of his followers, authorities said. Mobs set fire to government buildings and attacked police and TV journalists in the town of Panchkula in Haryana state, smashing the windshields of news vans and breaking broadcast equipment. Police initially used tear gas and water cannons and then fired bullets in the air in an attempt to control the surging mobs as people vandalized bus stations and government vehicles. “The situation is tense. New wildfires hit east Kelowna regions A large area was evacuated east of Kelowna, B.C. due to a wildfire that started Thursday afternoon. The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. PT and is approximately 20 kilometres east of the city, in the Joe Rich area. But it grew quickly, and Central Okanagan Emergency Operations evacuated properties for a large area affecting 474 properties and an estimated 1,100 people. It is estimated to be 380 hectares in size, with the nearest homes 3 kilometres away. “It has progressed quite steadily in the last few hours,” said B.C. Wildfire Service information
officer Melanie Morin. Multiple crews are on scene, including officers with the Kelowna, Lake Country and Joe Rich fire departments. But by the evening, there were no reports of any structures impacted by the wildfire, though Highway 33 will remain closed in both directions between Gallagher and Big White Road overnight. B.C. surpasses worst wildfire season on record — and threat is far from over An Emergency Support Services reception centre was established at Willow Park church on Highway 33 in Kelowna.

shortfall in revenue from the Golden Ears, which the transit authority owns and operates, the premier added. The government says it will budget for the lost revenue in the annual fiscal plan, which will be updated in early September. Previously, when critics pointed out the loss in revenue for the government, Horgan suggested the cost would be spread across the province. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver immediately slammed the NDP government for the move. “It’s unfortunate that the government has decided to proceed with this reckless policy, Weaver said in a press release. “There is no question that the affordability crisis facing so many British Columbians is a significant concern. However, this policy is high cost and low impact. He contended the province would get a higher return on investment for programs targeting things like education, student housing and child care. “Moreover, making such a massive addition to our debt risks raising interest on all debt, which ultimately prevents government from being able to invest more in important social programs, Weaver said. In contrast, Horgan insisted the loss of toll revenue shouldn’t affect the province’s borrowing costs. But Weaver added that tolls can help encourage drivers to find other modes of transportation, which helps to reduce congestion and pollution. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore echoed those concerns in a tweet Friday morning,

Toronto man who disappeared 3 years ago surfaces on Interpol list of ISIS suicide bombers From page 1 others — Nur and Adib — whose last names are not known. What followed was a desperate attempt by the men’s parents to keep them from falling into the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), beginning with missing person’s reports to Toronto police. From there, officers with the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement team became involved, asking tough questions of their families. Timmins, Ont.-born jihadist recruited 5 others for ISIS ‘I don’t care about imams’: Foreign policy the blind spot in Canada’s deradicalization efforts When Abdul Malik’s father learned
the young men were headed to Syria, he and Nur’s father got on a plane and managed to convince the four to come home, where he says they were repeatedly questioned by CSIS agents and RCMP officers. In July 2014, three of the men disappeared again. Now, five years later, Hasib’s name has surfaced on a list of people who could launch attacks in the West, says researcher Amarnath Amarasingam, a fellow at the George Washington University’s Program on Extremism. CBC News first reported on Hasib in March 2015 when it was determined that he was among five people to have been recruited by Timmins, Ont.-born foreign fighter Andre
Poulin, who died while fighting in Syria in 2013 at age 24. The first of the five to be recruited was a man named Mohammed Ali of Mississauga, Ont., who went by Abu Turaab, who left Canada in April 2014. At the time, Hasib’s mother told CBC News she was devastated at her son’s disappearance; she said the last time she’d spoken to him was November 2014. “I asked him where he was and he wouldn’t answer,” she recalled in 2015. “And then I was overtaken by grief and couldn’t speak to him.” The list on which Hasib’s name appears — along with his nom du guerre Abu Bakr al-Bangladeshi — was first reported on last month in
The Guardian. The British newspaper said it was based on data collected by U.S. intelligence and circulated by Interpol on May 27. According to The Guardian, the list says those named “may have been trained to build and position improvised explosive devices in order to cause serious deaths and injuries. It is believed that they can travel internationally, to participate in terrorist activities.” But The Guardian reports that it contains the suspects’ names, their recruitment dates, their last likely addresses, their mothers’ names and any available photographs. Hasib’s appearance on it comes as a surprise to Amarasingam. On ISIS entrance forms, Hasib is listed as someone who wanted to be a fighter, he notes — not someone looking to be a suicide bomber. The former Monarch Park Collegiate student and apparent graduate was active in his school’s athletic program, participating in long-distance running competitions before enrolling in Centennial College. It’s a stark contrast to his portrayal on the list as an aspiring bomber with a suicide brigade. There is also the possibility that Hasib’s identity could have been used by someone else.

by saying talaq three times. Justices Rohinton Nariman, Uday Lalit and Joseph Kurien ruled that triple talaq is unconstitutional. Justice Abdul Nazeer and Chief Justice JS Khehar upheld the validity of triple talaq. CJI Khehar asked the government to bring legislation in six months to govern marriage and divorce in the Muslim community. The ball is now in Parliament’s court. It is to be noted that the Centre had during the course of hearings earlier this year told the bench that it will come out with a law to regulate marriage and divorce among Muslims if ‘triple talaq’ is held invalid and unconstitutional by the apex court. In February this year, the SC said a Constitution bench would be set up to hear and decide on whether ‘triple talaq’, the oral divorce practice some Muslims follow, is constitutionally valid. The bench reserved its verdict on May 18 after a six-day marathon hearing during the summer vacation. Shayara Bano, a 35-year-old woman, challenged the practice in 2016, a year after her husband of 15 years divorced her via triple talaq. Petitions of four other Muslim women - Aafreen Rehman, Gulshan Parveen, Ishrat Jahan and Atiya Sabri - were tagged with Bano’s plea.

B.C. gov’t won’t be funding Commonwealth Games bid NDP’s Carole James says the province has bigger financial priorities, including the opioid crisis and wildfires The BC government has decided not to support a bid for Victoria to host the 2022 Commonweath Games In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Finance Minister Carole James said the decision was based on money. “While we appreciate the energy and passion of the bid committee, we cannot make a commitment to support the bid through direct funding, nor can we provide a financial shortfall guarantee, she said. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver echoed James’ decision. “I think it’s just not a priority for British Columbia right now to invest taxpayers money while we have so many issues facing us, he said. Bid would have cost B.C. $400-million plusv The Victoria bid committee proposal included $400 million from both the provincial and the federal government. In addition, the provincial government was asked to provide a guarantee that it would cover any cost overruns. James said the details provided last week by the bid committee left too many unknowns to fully understand the costs and risks of hosting the games. “Our government was elected with a very clear set of priorities. Those priorities are helping communities impacted by the wildfires and those suffering from the opioid crisis, she said. David Black, chair of the bid committee, reacted with disappointment, saying it would have been a good opportunity for Victoria. “We have to have the province, and if the province can’t get there because of timing and worries about their own budget. — so be it. he said. The Commonwealth Games Federation is under a tight timeline to find a new host for the 2022 Games after Durban South Africa pulled out over financial issues. James said the province would be open to hosting the games again in the future, when there’s more time to prepare a bid that ensures taxpayers are protected from the risks.

Former Whitecaps residency players plead not guilty to sexual assault charges Two teenagers previously with the Whitecaps FC residency, a soccer player development program, have pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault. The teens—who can’t be named due to a publication ban— appeared Thursday at the B.C. Provincial Court in Vancouver. In July, the Whitecaps issued a statement saying they completed an internal review of a serious incident, which allegedly took place in June between some male players at its Burnaby facility. The club said the two players in question, who were previously on suspension, have been released from the team. “The safety and well-being of our players
is our top priority, and we are deeply committed to providing an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect, the Whitecaps FC statement read. According to the Whitecaps website, the FC residency program is “designed to maximize a player’s potential on and off the field through a “soccer lifestyle philosophy linking technical and personal development [while] integrating training, education and accommodation. The team said it is not commenting while the matter is before the courts.
B.C. Green Party proposes ban on foreign ownership of farmland B.C. Green Party Leader and Oak BayGordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver is calling for a ban on the foreign ownership of designated farmland in British Columbia. In early August of 2016, the B.C. Liberal government imposed a 15 per cent tax on foreign buyers. Weaver says this earlier tax had only a short term impact on speculative buying in the Lower Mainland and didn’t go far enough to stop speculative investment in other areas where the tax isn’t imposed, namely farmland. Weaver says foreign nationals are now looking at land zoned for agricultural use as an investment opportunity. “A safe haven for that investment is property lands, particularly large swaths of land, in
British Columbia, said Weaver during an interview with On the Island. “That doesn’t bode well for future affordability and future security, if we start letting it happen. Weaver points to Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec and P.E.I. as examples of other jurisdictions that have stronger measures put in place to protect against foreign ownership and he feels B.C. is behind the times. He also says the Agricultural Land Reserve and Agricultural Land Commission, the current organizations that ensure farmland is used only for farming, don’t go far enough to address the issue of beginner farmers not being able to afford land to start working on.

Delhi’s Anand Vihar station were set on fire. A curfew was imposed in at least four districts of Punjab, said Amrinder Singh, the state’s chief minister. A spokesperson for the guru’s sect, Dera Sacha Sauda, urged his supporters to remain calm. “I just want to request everyone to maintain peace at the moment,” said Dilawar Insan. “We will explore what legal options are available to us.” The sect claims to have about 50 million followers and campaigns for vegetarianism and against drug addiction. It has also taken up social causes such as organizing the weddings of poor couples. Such sects have
huge followings in India. It’s not unusual for their leaders to have small, heavily armed private militias protecting them. Angry mobs also attacked police in the town of Sirsa, where the guru’s ashram is located, local police said. When the guru left his ashram early Friday for the hearing, he was accompanied by a convoy of more than 180 vehicles, Singh, the Punjab chief minister, said. Police erected heavy metal barricades topped with barbed wire along main roads in the town, a quiet residential suburb of Chandigarh, the joint capital of Haryana and Punjab states. Authorities ordered internet and cellphone services shut down across both Haryana and Punjab as a security precaution. Train services were cancelled in the area, leading to railway delays

Woman to get warning after ‘racially slanted language’ used on SkyTrain An investigation is underway after several videos were posted on social media of what Metro Vancouver Transit Police say was a confrontation involving “profane and racially slanted language.” Transit police say in a news release that officers began the investigation after several videos were posted on Facebook following the confrontation on Monday afternoon. Police say officers boarded a SkyTrain in Burnaby after someone used the emergency alert system and spoke to a witness who told them a woman had been swearing at an
elderly couple before leaving the train. The couple told officers they were fine and did not wish further police involvement. Transit Police say they have identified a 75-year-old New Westminster woman who is known to them for documented angerrelated issues, but there is nothing to indicate she raises concerns for public safety. They say officers intend to interview her “with a discussion and warning about her behaviour and conduct when using the transit system.”

Economists worried by BC’s financial reliance on real estate Economic experts are raising concerns over the province’s financial reliance on BC’s booming real estate market and the new government’s promise to try and cool the market down. The 2016/17 public accounts released earlier this week recorded a $2.7 billion surplus. Real estate revenue accounted for a big part of that high number, largely due to a 32 per cent growth in the Property Transfer Tax revenue, which brought in roughly $2 billion in total revenue last fiscal year. While speaking to the media Tsur Somerville, a professor of economics at the University of British Columbia, said beyond

Lindsay Tedds, an economist at the University of Victoria, agrees that the current framework of B.C.’s economy relies heavily on the strength of the market. “Much as we like to point to Alberta being so reliant on their oil revenues, we are very reliant on the real estate industry to prop up our economy,” said Tedds. Inherently risky That is why Somerville is concerned that during the most recent provincial election campaign the B.C. NDP promised to cool the hot housing market. “If you slow down the real estate industry, because it’s an overly large part of our economy, you’re going to have some repercussions,” said Somerville. “It’s not a healthy situation to be that dependant on real estate, so the adjustment is going to be a little bit painful no matter what happens.” At this point however, Somerville Despite the NDP’s promises of cooling the market, so far their strategies are more geared towards making it easier said despite the NDP’s promises for people at the bottom end of the market to buy property. of cooling the market, so far their strategies are more geared towards the Property Transfer Tax the income from making it easier for people at the bottom end the hot real estate market feeds several other of the market to buy property. government revenue streams. “It’s hard for government to come in and He used examples like the personal income change markets. Surrey RCMP ask for help in locating suspect after seizing drugs Long term drugs realted investigation leads to arrests and charges Surrey RCMP are seeking the public’s help in tracking down an alleged drug trafficker following a massive bust last week. In February, the detachment’s drug section began investigating a local drug-distribution network operating throughout the Lower Mainland and “preying” on drug users at Surrey’s notorious “Strip” on 135A Street, Cpl. Scotty Schumann said. Officers executed four search warrants on Aug. 16 and 17 in the South Surrey and Guildford neighbourhoods, as well as in Langley and Delta, with the support of Coquitlam RCMP, Delta police and units including the emergency response team and police dog services. Several handguns were seized in the raids, two of which were loaded. Schumann said police seized about 30,000 doses of cocaine and almost 4,800 doses of heroin and fentanyl, along with six weapons — two of them loaded — a stolen vehicle and identity cards, cash and materials typically found at drug processing and supply sites. He called the seizure “significant” and said the trafficking operation involved mid-level and streetlevel dealers. A display of drugs, including deadly fentanyl, and guns seized during a Surrey RCMP investigation “Certainly,

ICBC board members replaced NDP government has replaced three more board members at the Insurance Corporation of BC, as it prepares a shakeup for the public auto insurer that is facing steep rate increases to cover its claim costs. One of Premier John Horgan’s first moves after forming government in July was to replace the ICBC board chair, former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Barry Penner, with former NDP cabinet minister Joy MacPhail. On Thursday, Justice Minister David Eby announced that three more board members had been fired and replaced. The new directors are Doug Allen, former executive with the TransLink and Canada Line corporations, former Hospital Employees’ Union business manager Bonnie Pearson, and Jeremy Bell,
an investment consultant and former chief actuary with the Healthcare Benefit Trust. The new directors join Cathy McLay, TransLink’s chief financial officer, who was appointed to the ICBC board along with MacPhail. Directors whose appointments were rescinded are technology executive Catherine Boivie, and chartered accountants William Davidson and Ronald Olynyk. After being given responsibility for ICBC in July, Eby released a report commissioned by the previous government calculating that ICBC rates could go up by as much as 30 per cent by 2019. The Ernst & Young report cited increased car crashes, higher payouts for minor injuries, and a claim rate rising faster than accident rates.
Surrey to be short of portables in September The Surrey School District says not all of the 50 new portables it has on order will arrive in time for the first day of classes. However, spokesman Doug Strachan says the situation will be manageable in the interim. “Our approach is to ensure the portables we receive in time (almost 40) are installed at the schools that have little or no alternative or practical back-up plan, he told the Now-Leader. “About a dozen needed portables that we anticipate may be a late have been designated for schools that have space that can reasonably and temporarily be used as classrooms, such as a common area. Most of these are schools that need only one portable. “We expect all the portables will be here within two to three weeks of school start up. With the new 50 portables, Surrey will have about 325 district-wide. The district was tasked
with finding 168 new classrooms in Surrey this year. Thirty of those new classrooms are due to normal enrolment growth, and 138 are a result of the 2016 Supreme Court ruling that restored class size and composition to pre2002 levels. Strachan said the district found 115 of those within existing schools. There was initially concern after it was revealed the district would need to take some non-teaching classrooms, such as computer labs, and turn them into classrooms. Although some wondered if spaces like music rooms and libraries would be lost, Surrey school board chair Shawn Wilson has said there’s “not a chance that therapy rooms and libraries would remain untouched.

Crews battling largest recorded wildfire in the province’s history KAMLOOPS: More than 400 firefighters are battling to contain the largest recorded wildfire in British Columbia’s history. Kevin Skrepnek with the B.C. Wildfire Service says 19 fires have merged in B.C.’s Interior, creating a single fire that’s estimated to be more than 4,600 square kilometres in size. Previously, the largest recorded B.C. wildfire was a 2,200 square kilometre blaze that burned in the northeastern part of the province in 1958. It’s been a record-breaking fire season in B.C., with more than one-thousand fires
scorching about 10,000 square kilometres since April 1st. Emergency Management B.C. says 3,800 people remain displaced by the fires and nearly 10,000 more have been warned that they may need to leave on a moment’s notice. Skrepnek says crews fighting flames in the southern part of the province are getting help from calm weather and seasonal temperatures, but unsettled conditions are expected to return later this week, bringing wind and possible lightning.

Court records show Saddique declared only 177 days of physical presence in Canada when he applied to become a citizen, well short of the required 1,095 days. Normally, that would have disqualified his application. However, Saddique argued successfully before a citizenship judge in January that he had been forced to move to the U.S. for his medical residency so he could earn the credentials he needed to work as a doctor in Canada. After examining the case, the citizenship judge found that Saddique had maintained his “centralized mode of living in Canada and allowed him to become a Canadian. The minister of citizenship and immigration appealed to Federal Court, arguing the judge’s decision was unreasonable. Among other things, the government faulted the judge for failing to analyze whether Saddique had already established residence in Canada before he left for the United States to continue his training, and said the evidence he provided about his ties to Canada was inadequate. “As I understand the minister’s position, it is akin to an adequacy-of-reasons argument and, despite protestations to the contrary, there are elements of asking the court to reweigh the evidence, Elliott said in her ruling. “By reason of their special knowledge and expertise, citizenship judges are owed a degree of deference in the application of the test they choose and the assessment of the evidence placed before them. Saddique, who is from Pakistan, in turn argued the judge had considered his circumstances carefully, and correctly applied the legal test for residency. He maintained he would have preferred to do his medical residency in Canada but had been unable to obtain a position, and therefore had no choice but to go to the United States.

Green Party will introduce legislation for ride-sharing this fall ‘The government cannot stick its head in the sand when it comes to new technology,’ says Green leader The B.C. Green Party announced Monday it will introduce legislation to enable ridehailing services this fall — putting the pressure on the NDP government to come up with a more specific timeline regarding the popular online applications. Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Greens, said he wants to see the government take a proactive response to technology, pointing out Vancouver is the largest city in North America without ride-hailing. “The government cannot stick its head in the sand when it comes to new technology, he said.
Weaver has introduced ride-hailing legislation twice before, once in April 2016 and again in February 2017. Ride-hailing apps — like Uber and Lyft — have been the subject of considerable political tension in B.C. where many opponents say the service will harm the existing taxi industry. During the election the NDP said it supported the passing of new rules to introduce ride-hailing to B.C. in 2017, but it is working on what it calls “a fair approach to ride-hailing before introducing the
service. It has yet to offer a specific timeline. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevana responded to Weaver’s
Vancouver overdose deaths so far higher this year than 2016 More people have fatally overdosed in Vancouver so far this year than in all of 2016, the city says. It says 232 overdose deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year. The B.C. Coroners Service reported 231 fatalities for Vancouver last year, many involving the opioid painkiller fentanyl. The numbers suggest more than 400 deaths are anticipated by the end of the year, the city said in a news release Monday. Mayor Gregor Robertson called the rising number of overdose deaths “horrendous and absolutely heartbreaking and said the city will work with the new provincial government and pour resources into tackling the issue. First responders have handled an average of 135 overdose calls
a week this year, he said. “We can’t be complacent and let the number of deaths from this public health crisis be the new normal, Robertson said. Decriminalization of illicit drugs and expansion of injectable treatment options, such as medical-grade heroin, must be explored, he said, echoing a report issued last week by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Injectable heroin is available for a limited number of people at one Vancouver clinic, the only one of its kind in North America, and health officials have said stigma against illicit-substance users has stalled the expansion of the program. Robertson also wants more supportive housing for drug users and an increase in the number of overdose prevention sites so staff or

IHIT seeks footage of Marrisa Shen’s vigil and funeral as timeline of homicide narrows The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is seeking footage from the media and public from Marrisa Shen’s funeral and vigil as it continues to investigate the murder of
the 13-year-old Burnaby girl five weeks ago. Shen was seen on surveillance footage leaving her home near Central Park in Burnaby, B.C. on July 18 at around 6 p.m. PT. Her body was found in the park early the next morning at around 1 a.m. Marrisa Shen: A timeline of her disappearance Investigators had previously asked anyone who may have seen Shen on July 18 between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. to contact them. They have now narrowed that timeline, having established Shen’s last whereabouts at 7:38 p.m., when she was seen walking westbound on the south side of Central Boulevard and crossing McKay
Avenue. “This is a massive investigation and there’s many avenues that are being pursued right now, said Cpl. Meghan Foster. In addition to narrowing the timeline of her disappearance, IHIT and Burnaby RCMP say they have identified more than 90 persons of interest and are following up on nearly 200 tips. Foster clarified that “person of interest means anyone with information that might help further the investigation — not “suspect. Police are also reviewing thousands of hours of video footage collected from more than 60 locations. Now, they are asking the media and any member of the public to provide video footage from Shen’s vigil that occurred in Burnaby’s Central Park on July 22, 2017, and from her funeral that occurred at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on July 28, 2017. Foster said police continue to believe Shen’s homicide was random and took place in Burnaby’s Central Park. The homicide prompted Burnaby RCMP to increase patrols in and around the 86-hectare park, including uniformed and plainclothes officers and bike patrols to access remote terrain.

Rethink needed on old age security eligibility after fiscal report, Tory critic says Record-high spending forecasts for the old age security program show a need to rethink the age of eligibility, among other measures to keep it sustainable, the opposition Tories say. The chief actuary’s report forecasts spending to hit about $247 billion by 2060 — five times what it is slated to be this year — due to a coming wave of retirements and people living longer, meaning they draw on The previous Conservative government raised the age of eligibility for OAS to 67 from 65 to save on costs and prod people to work longer. old age benefits longer than the data in the report supports what the Tories program originally envisioned. The returning the age of eligibility to 65 will increase spending, which the government says it knew would happen. A spokesman for Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said not doing so would put 100,000 seniors in poverty and cost low-income seniors about $13,000 a year in benefits. Vecchio said the government needs to come up with a long-term plan for OAS to ensure sustainability in its funding without having to raise taxes. Unlike the Canada Pension Plan, people don’t prepay for old age benefits, which are instead funded through annual tax revenues. Rising old age security spending kept in check by CPP increases: report OTTAWA - A mandatory review of the country’s largest seniors benefit program is predicting alltime highs in spending over the coming years with waves of baby boomer retirements - spending levels that could have been even higher if not for changes to the public pension program. The report is the first glimpse into how the CPP expansion, phased in over the next 40 years, will affect old age security. The country’s chief actuary writes in his report that
program spending is projected to hit about $247 billion by 2060, an almost five-fold increase from planned spending this year, as more Canadians hit retirement and live longer, meaning more beneficiaries drawing payments for longer periods of time. The projected increase is expected to be cushioned by ongoing economic growth. Over the same projection period, Canada Pension Plan benefits will increase. The extra money to be doled out through CPP, funded by an CPP expansion phased in over the next 40 yearswill affect old age security?
increase in employee and employer premiums, is expected to reduce the number of low-income seniors - meaning $3 billion less in spending on the guaranteed income supplement in 2060 - and reduce overall spending on old age security benefits, which are scaled back as incomes rise.
Up to 4,000 migrants to receive welfare cheques starting Aug. 30 Quebec will begin handing out welfare cheques to as many as 4,000 asylum seekers next week, the province’s employment minister said. “Quebec has responsibilities in immigration,” François Blais told a news conference. “Now they’ll be getting welfare, they’ll be able to rent an apartment and get out of temporary accommodation, which is a good thing because it is pretty costly.” While the minimum basic monthly payment will be $623, Blais said recipients will have to undergo a “revenue test” beforehand to determine if they are eligible for all of that amount. There will also be an additional sum depending on the recipient’s family status. The three-day operation will take place at Montreal’s Palais des congrès convention centre beginning Wednesday, Aug. 30. Blais described the overall situation as “exceptional” and is not excluding asking Ottawa to help reimburse some of the welfare costs. Nearly 10,000 people have been apprehended at the border since the start of the year as they’ve sought to enter Canada in order to claim refugee status — almost equivalent to the total number of claims filed for all of 2013. Of those who have arrived this year, nearly 7,000 have arrived since July, the vast majority at an unofficial crossing point between Quebec and New York. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said one option being explored is accelerating the process to give those people temporary work permits so they will be less dependent on the temporary social supports in place.

Mike Duffy is suing the Senate, federal gov’ for $8M Sen. Mike Duffy is taking legal action against the Senate and the federal government, seeking nearly $8 million in damages. The suit seeks $6.5 million in general damages, $300,000 for loss of income and benefits and $1 million in punitive damages relating to the treatment Duffy faced during the Senate expenses scandal. In a statement, the P.E.I. senator said Conservatives are still in control of the Senate’s powerful internal economy committee — which deals with budget and other personnel matters — and they have proven they are “not interested in correcting the unjustified actions taken against me by the Senate. “The Harper Conservatives have

Duffy said he has suffered “stress and serious financial damage since the Senate moved to suspend him from the chamber and referred his questionable expenses to the RCMP for investigation in 2013. Duffy is also accusing the RCMP of negligence in their investigation of his housing and travel expenses because they did not give him an opportunity to adequately respond to accusations against him before filing criminal charges. He contends that his Charter rights were violated because he was subjected to “cruel and unusual punishment during the course of the scandal.

BC gov’t ends fiscal year with $2.7-billion surplus The B.C. government ended the last fiscal year with a surplus of $2.7-billion, largely in line with unaudited financial results released two months ago by the province’s former Liberal government. The 201617 public accounts released Tuesday by Finance Minister Carole James also show a $3.4-billion increase in revenue over the budget forecast while spending was $1.3-billion higher. James said while B.C.’s economic growth outperformed most other provinces, poverty remains a reality for many people struggling to afford basic needs in a province where the cost of housing is high. She said the New Democrats are planning programs to benefit seniors, as well as low-
to middle-income families that can’t pay for quality child care and businesses that can’t find employees because of the cost of living in some communities. “It’s really tough for people out there to see the benefit of a surplus this size when they’re struggling day to day to manage, when you take a look at the poverty rates in our province,” James said. “A budget and a surplus belong to the people of British Columbia. The people of our province should see the benefits of any strong economy that we have.” James said the government will make key spending decisions in education, and some of them will be reflected in next month’s financial update before a full budget is released in
February. Under the Budget Transparency and Accountability Act, the surplus will be applied to the provincial operating debt. The government collected $2.8-billion more than it expected in taxes, including $1.5-billion more than it forecast from personal income taxes. The province’s GDP grew by an estimated 3.7 per cent in 2016, and James said privatesector forecasts expect B.C. to be among the top provincial economic performers in 2017 and 2018. A 15 per cent tax on foreign home-buyers brought in last August in Metro Vancouver collected $102-million in revenue to the end of 2016, James said, adding she couldn’t say whether the NDP would expand it to other hot real estate
markets, including Vancouver Island. The Liberals released an unaudited financial update in June that pegged the surplus at $2.8-billion shortly before they were defeated in the legislature on a confidence vote, leading to the NDP forming a minority government. Liberal finance critic Shirley Bond said the NDP hasn’t released details on the financial impact of its spending promises. “The unanswered question is whether the NDP have a plan on how to keep B.C.’s economy growing to ensure investments can continue to be made,” she said in a news release. “This should not be a onetime spending spree that government can never afford again. We need to see a plan to sustain revenues.”
Crossing borders illegally won’t fast track immigration: PM Trudeau told asylum seekers All those who cross illegally will be subject to Canada’s ‘rigorous’ screening Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a message for asylum seekers: crossing illegally into the country doesn’t offer an advantage when it comes to obtaining refugee status in Canada. “If I could directly speak to people seeking asylum, I’d like to remind them there’s no advantage,” Trudeau said at a news conference Sunday in Montreal. “Our rules, our principles and our Asylum seekers rest in a tent at Canada-US laws apply to everyone.” Trudeau’s border near Quebec comments come as the government the 2,996 who crossed throughout all of July. grapples with a surge in asylum seekers Speaking prior to Montreal’s Pride Parade, crossing into Quebec. Cut Pakistan’s aid, revoke major non-NATO ally status, US lawmakers say
Thousands flee Myanmar to seek refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh
5RKLQJ\D UHIXJHHV ÀHH 0\DQPDU Thousands of Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh since Myanmar announced a military build-up in Rakhine state earlier this month, community leaders said on Wednesday. Rakhine in northern Myanmar has been gripped by violence since October, when militants attacked police posts. That sparked a bloody military crackdown that the UN believes may amount to ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya, a mainly Muslim minority living in Buddhist Myanmar. On August 12 authorities in Myanmar said hundreds of troops had moved into Rakhine as it ramps up counterinsurgency efforts there. Rohingya leaders in Bangladesh told AFP that at least 3,500 had arrived since then, piling pressure onto already overcrowded refugee camps in the Cox’s Bazaar area near the Naf river that divides the two countries. That is despite stepped-up patrols by Bangladeshi border and coast guards, who said this week they had pushed back a boat carrying 31 Rohingya, including children. “In the Balukhali camp alone, some 3,000 Rohingya arrived from their villages in Rakhine,” said Abdul Khaleq, referring to the camp nearest the river, where most of the migrants stay when they first arrive. Kamal Hossain, a Rohingya elder in another, camp, said nearly 700 families had arrived in Bangladesh in the past 11 days. Many were sleeping in the open because there was no more space in the camps, he said. Mohammad Omar, a 28-yearold Rohingya who had just arrived along with 40 relatives, said he had been
attacked by local Buddhists who looted Rohingya homes in Rakhine. Buddhist-majority Myanmar has long faced criticism for its treatment of the more than one million Rohingya who live in Rakhine, who are seen as interlopers from Bangladesh, denied citizenship and access to basic rights. Dhaka estimates that nearly 400,000 Rohingya refugees are living in squalid refugee camps and makeshift settlements in Cox’s Bazar. They included more than 70,000 who arrived in the months that followed the crisis in October, many bringing stories of systematic rape, murder and arson at the hands of Myanmar soldiers. But Rohingya are also increasingly unwelcome in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, where police often blame them for crimes such as drug trafficking. Dhaka has floated the idea of relocating tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees to a remote, flood-prone island off its coast, despite opposition from rights groups. On Wednesday the UN refugee agency said it was “deeply concerned” by the reports of a boat carrying Rohingya being turned back. “UNHCR is deeply concerned by this incident, which as the coast guard reported, involved women and children who said they were fleeing violence,” a UNHCR spokesman told media. “In the current security context, the majority, if not all, of these people crossing from Myanmar into Bangladesh are believed to be fleeing insecurity,” he said.
Hailing Donald Trump’s new tough line against Pakistan, top US lawmakers have demanded that Islamabad be designated a “state sponsor of terrorism” and its major non-NATO ally status be revoked to force it stop from supporting terrorist groups. President Trump yesterday called out Pakistan for supporting terror groups and providing them safe havens within its territory. The criticism came as a part of his speech outlining the new US strategy to end the 16-year war in Afghanistan and bring peace and stability in the larger South Asian region. “President Trump’s speech marked a positive shift in US policy, but it must not be limited only to words. If Pakistan does not stop aiding terrorists with American blood on their hands we must cut all aid to Islamabad, revoke their privileged status as a major non-NATO ally, and designate Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism,” Congressman Ted Poe said. He said Trump’s speech was a rude awakening for Pakistani military and intelligence services, who “keep betraying” the United
States while accepting billions in aid from Washington. “Despite Pakistan’s ongoing treachery, Islamabad is among the leading recipients of US foreign assistance since 9/11 and is praised in some quarters of the US government as a ‘vital’ ally. This must stop - if we want to stabilise Afghanistan, we must deal first with Pakistan,” he said. Poe has a legislation pending in the US Congress that calls for designating Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism and revoking its major non-NATO ally status. Congressman Kevin Cramer, too, applauded Trump for applying pressure on Pakistan. “While Pakistan is an important partner in helping keep the peace, it’s time they take decisive action to make clear they do not support terrorist regimes in the region,” he said. “The announcement that the Trump administration plans to increase cooperation with India couldn’t come at a better time,” Cramer said. Congressman Drew Ferguson tweeted: “We must focus on removing terrorists safe havens and holding our partners in Pakistan to account.”
Maldives Army occupies Parliament to block no-trust vote The Maldives military locked down the nations Parliament on Tuesday in what opposition lawmakers said was an attempt to block a motion to impeach the Speaker of the House. Imthiyaz Fahmy, of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), tweeted a video of what he said were security forces in plain clothes blocking representatives from entering the chamber, the Guardian reported. Another lawmaker from the MDP, Eva Abdulla, said MPs were eventually allowed in but said that Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed was also surrounded by soldiers. A close ally of President Abdulla Yameen, Mohamed opened the session and then immediately closed it before MPs were able to vote on the no-confidence motion, she said. “The session was over in five minutes,” she said by phone. Lawmakers said they raised the motion against the Speaker after he repeatedly refused parliamentary requests to scrutinise the government. “The opposition has not been allowed to summon any government officials. We are
not allowed to hold any part of the state accountable at all,” she added. A similar opposition bid to oust the Speaker was defeated in March after several lawmakers were evicted or walked out to protest against what they said were discrepancies in the vote count, the report said. President Yameen had been accused of reversing democratic progress in a country that became a multi-party democracy in 2008. Last month, the armed forces padlocked the gates of Parliament to prevent another impeachment attempt.

With the clarification that the order passed by the court on December 15, 2016, will not prohibit licensed establishments within the municipal areas, the reopening of the bars is now a matter of days. Sources said the Administration would now seek a legal opinion, which was a formality, and start issuing licences to hotels and restaurants soon. The court had said, “The order will only deal with the sale of liquor along and in proximity of highways... which provide connectivity between cities, towns and villages. The order does not prohibit licensed establishments within the municipal areas.” Ankit Gupta, president of the Chandigarh Hospitality Association, said they were grateful to the apex court for issuing a clarification that the liquor ban on highways was not applicable to licensed premises within the municipal limits of a city. The association requested the Administration to restore the status quo

of March 31, on payment of the licence fee, for hospitality outlets affected by the ban. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, said the efforts of the Chandigarh Administration had been applauded by the whole country. The Chandigarh Administration’s sincere fight against all odds for a decision from the Supreme Court had paid off. Hotels and restaurants faced a loss of around Rs 70 crore in the past four months following the order of the Supreme Court banning the sale of liquor within 500 metres of national and state highways. The order had affected the business of approximately 90 hotels situated on the National Highway-21 and the state highway (Madhya Marg) in the city. A majority of the hotels are situated in Sectors 26, 35 and 43, which fall on the national highway. The hotels were also forced to lay off approximately 5,000 employees. Gurvinder Juneja, secretary of the Chandigarh Hotel and Restaurant Association, also welcomed the decision.

Akal Takht Jathedar asks Sikhs to guard gurdwaras Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh (pictured) appealed to Sikhs to be vigilant, ahead of the verdict in Dera Sacha Sauda case. “The sauda saadh (Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh) and his Premis might try to cause a commotion. The need of the hour is to ensure the safety of gurdwaras. Though it’s the responsibility of the government and the local administration to maintain law and order, I appeal to the gurdwara managements and Sikh volunteers to remain on alert,” he
said. On the Qadian gurdwara row, the Jathedar asked CM Capt Amarinder Singh to intervene, while alleging that Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa’s supporters had overpowered the pathis. Bajwa said, “I respect the sanctity of Akal Takht and the Singh Saheb. This is a tussle between Akalis and the gurdwara management headed by Master Johar Singh, a former Akali MLA. Giani Gurbachan Singh is being misled by SAD leaders.”

HC annuls nominated councillors’ voting right The Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed a petition claiming that the voting right to nominated councillors in the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh would result in suppressing the will of the electorate. With this, the voting right of nominated councillors stands annulled. The Bench of Acting Chief Justice Surinder Singh Saron and Justice Avneesh Jhingan passed the order on the petition, filed in public interest by councillor Satinder Singh through counsel Baltej Singh Sidhu. He had referred to Section 4(3) (ii) of the Municipal Corporation Act before asserting that the nominated members were to be nominated by the government. “Nominated members are not elected members. They have not taken the mandate of the electorate. To give the right to vote in the meeting of the Municipal
Corporation amounts to suppressing the will of the electorate,” Sidhu had argued. He had added that the right to exercise the vote by the nominated members tilted the balance against the wishes of the electorate. It was not only undemocratic, but prone to misuse also “because it cannot be expected from a nominated person to go against the will of his nominator”. Sidhu said the issue before the court was regarding the nominated members’ right to vote in the Municipal Corporation meetings. Section 4 (3) (ii) of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, as extended to Chandigarh, gave the voting right to nine members to be nominated by the government. On the other hand, Article 243 R of the Constitution did not give the voting right to the nominated members.

23 years old stalking victim kept in lock-up for two nights A 23-year-old woman from Vadela Granthia village, district Batala was allegedly stalked near the bus stand here, following which her friend clashed with a group of youths called by her suspected stalker. The victim’s father alleged that the cops illegally confined her in the lock-up for two nights in connection with the incident, even though her name does not figure in the FIR, and made her sign 10 blank papers. Her lawyer, Vimal Sachdeva, said: “She was called by her friend Gurjant Singh’s mother to the police station, but the cops arrested her.” Gurjant and others were booked under Sections 307 and 160 of the IPC. The blank papers were mistakenly attached with the police file presented before duty magistrate Puneet Mohinia, who suspected that the victim was being wrongly implicated. She was then brought to the court on production warrant. Her statement was recorded in-camera. The victim’s father said the stalker belonged to their village. “He has been after my daughter
for a long time. He was travelling on the same bus to Jalandhar. His relative is posted in the bus stand police post,” he added. “On Sunday, we apprised Police Commissioner PK Sinha of the incident, but no action was taken,” he said. Sinha said, “As per our report, no stalking took place. The woman

Ban on plastic bags remains ineffective Though polybags have been banned in the city, its sale and purchase is a common sight. Being a non-biodegradable product, it is harmful for the environment. Plastic bags also prove fatal for animals as these can be seen feeding on the same at garbage dumps. Residents feel there should be an effective alternative to such bags. Swaraj Grover, a retired principal, said, “Plastic is harmful. There is a need to create awareness among people about its harmful effects. Strict actions should be taken. One can go for paper bags, but there’s a lack of will and awareness among people. Proper implementation of law is the need of the hour.” Stressing the need to come out with other alternatives, Gunbir Singh, chairman, EcoAmritsar, said, “We are doing a lot of work to promote recycled
paper bags. We are also devising new ways for alternative use of plastic bags. The use of plastic bag can only be stopped if there is an alternative.” Gurinder Singh Mattu, social worker, said, “People carelessly throw bags
in the garbage. Apart from getting eaten by animals, polybags also choke sewerage.” According to PK Sharma, Principal of Hindu College, “Jute bag are the only solution.”

His comments came after Trump announced his Afghan policy and the path forward to the US engagement in South Asia, India and Pakistan in particular. “Pakistan and the US historically had very good relationships. But over the last few years, there’s been a real erosion in the confidence between our two governments. “There’s been an erosion in trust because we have witnessed terrorist organisations being
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson given safe haven inside of Pakistan to plan and carry out attacks against US servicemen, US officials, disrupting peace efforts inside of Afghanistan,” Tillerson said. Noting that the new Afghan policy is a regional approach, the Secretary of State said it also included a fairly comprehensive review of the US’ ties with Pakistan and India. “We see this approach as requiring an integration of all three of those strategies and use Pakistan and India to also bring pressure to bear on the situation in Afghanistan,” he said.
Trump’s tough talk unlikely to move Pakistan In military terms, Donald Trump’s longawaited new Afghanistan strategy looks very much like the old one. But, on the diplomatic front, he took a risk in confronting unruly, nuclear-armed Pakistan. Washington has long been frustrated by Pakistan’s provision of cross-border safe havens to some of the Taliban factions and armed Islamist groups fighting against US troops and their Afghan allies. Trump’s predecessor
Barack Obama risked triggering a breakdown in the long US alliance with Islamabad when, without forewarning, he sent commandos into Pakistan in 2011 to kill Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. But, rhetorically at least, Trump’s much anticipated national address on Monday, in which he laid out a new strategy to win the United States’ longest war, marked a dramatic increase in pressure on Pakistan.

Most Indian students leave UK after degree A majority of Indian students who come to the UK for higher education tend to leave at the end of their degree, according to official data released today. Between April 2016 and April 2017, as many as 7,469 Indian students left before the expiry of their student visas with only 2,209 choosing to extend their visas to remain in Britain, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) said. “Thai, Chinese, Indian and North American (US) students were more likely to depart before their study visas or extensions expired, whereas Russian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Saudi Arabian students were more likely to extend their leave to remain,” the ONS data said. It also confirms a massive drop in the number of Indians choosing the UK as a destination of choice for their university education. Indian students accounted for approximately 9,600 visas granted in 2016 (or 7 per cent), but in 2010 they accounted for around one in five of visas granted at 40,500, the figures said. The latest data coincides with results of a new exit-check system introduced in April 2015 with aim of building a more complete picture of whether those who entered the UK left when they were supposed to.
It indicates that figures of students overstaying may have been inflated in the past and has prompted UK’s home secretary Amber Rudd to commission a new assessment of the impact of international students on the UK economy. Rudd has directed the UK’s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to examine the impact both EU and non-EU students have on the labour market and economy whilst in the UK. “There is no limit to the number of genuine international students who can come to the UK to study and the fact that we remain the second most popular global destination for those seeking higher education is something to be proud of,” Rudd said in a statement. “We understand how important students from around the world are to our higher education sector, which is a key export for our country, and that’s why we want to have a robust and independent evidence base of their value and the impact they have,” Rudd said. The move has been widely welcomed by universities and other agencies involved in attracting more overseas students to the UK’s shores.

Indian-origin Malaysian man jailed for life in Singapore for drug smuggling A 30-year-old Indian-origin Malaysian man has been jailed for life in Singapore for smuggling drugs. Saravanan Chandaram, 30, who pleaded guilty to two charges of importing the controlled drugs, also received the maximum 24 strokes of the cane, the Straits Times reported. The prosecution submitted a certificate to the court stating that Saravanan was only a drug courier and had substantively helped the authorities to disrupt drug trafficking. This gave the judge the discretion to impose a life sentence instead of the mandatory death penalty. Saravanan was found with 10 bundles containing at least 1.38 kilogrammes of
cannabis, and at least 3.29 kilogrammes of cannabinol and cannabinol derivative. On November 5, 2014, he rented a car and met a drug syndicate leader, known only as Aya, in Skudai in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, where he collected the 10 bundles of drugs. Saravanan, who worked for Aya as his bodyguard and personal driver, hid the bundles under the armrest of the rear passenger seat. Defence lawyer Singa Retnam, in his closing submissions to the court last month, said that Saravanan had borrowed Malaysian Ringgit 4,000 (Singapore dollars 1,270) from Aya as he did not have enough savings for his son’s operation.

The world’s largest samosa
The world record for the largest samosa was smashed in London on Tuesday by a whopping version of the popular Asian snack weighing in at 153.1 (337.5 pounds) kilogrammes. A dozen volunteers from the Muslim Aid UK charity built the giant samosa then deep-fried it in a custom-built vat at an East London Mosque. Adjudicators from Guinness World Records were on hand to oversee the process and certify that the megasamosa passed the required tests. The previous record of 110.8 kg was set by Bradford College in northern England in June 2012. The samosa was built on a giant wire mesh, then winched into a vat of cooking oil before being hauled out to be weighed. “My heart was beating really fast,â€? said Farid Islam, 26, the project organiser. “It was very tense. There was a buzz that Deepika Padukone, who earlier worked with Shoojit in Piku, was roped in as the female lead in the movie. However, speaking to MidDay, the director revealed that they have not cast a female lead in the movie. He had said, “The female cast is yet to be locked in.” Talking more about the movie, he said, “October is an unusual slice-ofContinued on page 5

Chalti hai kya 9 se 12 will be out at 11 am and will be a perfect tease You might remember how Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt sought blessings and approval from Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt when they danced on Tamma Tamma from Thaanedar in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. This time Varun is attempting a 90s nostalgia with Judwaa 2. The original had made our childhood fabulous! This time he got Karisma Kapoor to do that same. Obviously, there will be a few inferences from the original which will find its way into the remake and

Akshay Kumar and Rajinikanth starrer ‘2.0’ Brace yourselves! The teaser of Akshay Kumar AND Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film, 2.0 is going to come out tomorrow. @superstarrajini – @akshaykumar ‘s #2Point0Glimpse at 6 PM tomorrow..” Whoa! Now that’s something that’s got us super excited. After all, this is something that we have been desperately waiting for. The film has been in the news ever since forever and in fact, initially there were rumours that Akki will be playing a crow in
Sidharth Malhotra has a SECRET to cheer up By now you would know how Jacqueline Fernandez is someone who barely takes anything seriously! I mean, it’s like you make fun of her, say rubbish, yet you wouldn’t be able to take that smile off her face. She’s like this brand ambassador of happiness. So it came as no surprise that even when her ‘Gentleman’ Sidharth Malhotra kept trolling her during my interview, she played along so sportingly that she was actually seen enjoying all the jokes on her. Yes…take for instance this one when I asked Sid to be a true gentleman and cheer up a heartbroken Jacqueline. First, Jacqueline would be the last one to ever remain heartbroken for long but any how if at all she ever gets upset, I asked Sid what would be that one trick he would use to light up Jacqueline’s mood? And there….there…he didn’t think twice before saying, “Jacqueline Instagram”, “Jacqueline, new app on social media”… Jacqueline, new filters??” Oh! Jacqueline couldn’t stop laughing on hearing this and also admitted how much she loves filters. Let’s not forget, even on No Filter Neha, Sid spoke about Jacqueline saying, “Jacky is the brand ambassador of social media. While we were on the bike promoting A Gentleman, she was quite worried about her phone as she was doing the live video. She is a mad and a crazy girl to work with. And then she was not interested in me or what we were doing. She was more interested in what’s happening on social media. I think if we take away social media from her, a part of Jacky will die.
the film. However, speaking to BollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY, Akshay had shunned such rumours where he said that he will be playing an alien creature and NOT a crow! That probably explains 2.0’s tagline – The world is not only for humans. Crow or not, we are very excited about Akshay Kumar’s character in 2.0. Just recently there were reports stating that the film’s release date has been pushed further. However, that’s untrue. Trade analyst Taran Aadarsh took to Twitter to confirm the
release date of the Akshay – Rajini starrer where he tweeted, “#2point0 release shifted to April 2018? No truth to it. 25 Jan 2018 it is and that’s final. Stars Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar.” The trailer is set to release on December 12, that happens to be Rajinikanth’s birthday. (ALSO READ: Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s 2.O budget touches a WHOPPING Rs 400 crore!) The film is reportedly made a whopping budget of Rs 400 crore.

hile Sunny Leone’s sexy item number from Bhoomi has got you tripping, BollywoodLife has learned that the original choice for this special song was Malaika Arora. Yes, the makers wanted to rope in Munni for this Neha Kakkar and Badshah song. So what really made Malaika turn down the offer? Was the song not up to the mark? Or was the actress charging a heavy sum? Well, a source close to the film revealed, “Malaika was approached for the Trippy song first. But when she was approached for the song she had date issues. Well, Malaika’s loss proved to be Sunny’s gain. Malaika would have added her own charm to the Trippy number, after all she has quite a few hit item numbers in her kitty, just like Sunny. Coming back to Sunny’s Bhoomi song, it has been well received and everyone seem pretty impressed with this scorching hot
number. While Malaika has been hinting that she’d like to be a part of Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3 and repeat her Munni Badnam act, Sunny has already ticked three hit special songs this year. Sunny Leone kickstarted the year with Laila Main Laila song in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees. Obviously, it was one of the highlights of the film. Shraddha Kapoor ups her cuteness level
T
he quintessential girl next door and the new age Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor who has been ticking off one role after another is on a serious mission to bring back the good old cute back in the fashion circuit. With two steady m ov i e s , Ok Jaanu and Half Girlfriend backing her in the first half of the year, Shraddha Kapoor is all set to woo the audiences with a gritty role, essaying the titular role of Haseena Parkar in the Apurva L a k h i a directed biographical crime flick. O f f - s c re e n , Shraddha K a p o o r has teamed with her goto stylist, Tanya Ghavri following a brief a s s o c i at i o n with fashion s t y l i s t Shaleena
Nathani. Certainly not a Plain Jane, Shraddha Kapoor is counted amongst the sartorial stunners of B-town whose penchant to pull off ensembles that suit her demure personality the best. Armed with a refined and chic style sensibility, Shraddha Kapoor seems to be driving home the point that looking sexy is just too mainst re am and cute is indeed here to stay! W e absolutely l o v e d S h r a d d h a’s effortless sense of style in Ok Jaanu, her promotional style for the same featured cutesy dresses and skirts. For an event for the eyewear brand, Vogue, Shraddha donned this prim and cute look. Here’s a quick style tour on S h r a d d h a’s look.
Anil Kapoor decodes his throwback pictures and super entertaining work
W
e handed out some blast from the past images to Anil Kapoor and the actor took us down the memory lane... Anil Kapoor is one actor who’s not just entertaining on screen, but off it too. We caught up with the Mubarakan actor recently and decided to put to test his memory. We handed out several of his blast from the past pictures to the actor and he reminisced the story behind these pictures for us. From a candid click with daughters Rhea and Sonam Kapoor to his fashion blunder, which the actor termed as “Red Riding Hood” look, Anil Kapoor opened up to BollywoodLife.com like never before. Remember, when Anil Kapoor had challenged Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor to beat his this awesome look on social media? Well, the actor literally decoded this look for us and we couldn’t help but ROTFL. I’ve been breaking fashion boundaries way before you guys!
The actor said, “Look at how stylish I am. My children and my wife almost slapped me when they saw this pic. They said, “Dad how could you wear? From where did you get the confidence to wear this?”. Main bhi yeh sochta hoon ki mere mi itna confidence kaise se agayaa ki… I am sleeveless with all the hair on my hand. Look at the boots… and look at my hat that’s also red. The pants are red, the boots are red, hat is also red. This is like Red Riding Hood. Anil Kapoor in and as Red Riding Hood.” That’s not all when we handed out a pic of his with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, he said, “This was one of the movie premieres, I think so 3 Idiots. Because all three of us were there. And this look of mine, is an unforgettable look for film Chocolate. I will use this look, because nobody remembers the film.”

Bollywood Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bidita Bag, Jatin Goswami
‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’
A major issue with a film without any moral compass/centre whatsoever is that it’s unlikely to generate much empathy among its audiences, whether for the situations on screen, or the characters concerned. Anybody can be shot at, and die, or not; and since all of them are bad guys anyway, who cares? That’s a bummer. Be that as it may, this is that dystopian, guiltypleasure, very ‘male’ movie, if you may, that gracefully avoids descending into obvious misogyny, and which you wish to access precisely for the grime, sex, guns, and a dark-grey world, where practically everyone is so frickin’ twisted in the first place. Also Read: Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bidita Bag get steamy in ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ song ‘Barfani’ ×The ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ in the boondocks is incidentally Babu Bihari, the sharpshooter (Nawazuddin Siddique). Forget small-town, this is almost a rural film. The sharp-shooter has made a name for himself in his UP hamlet over years. One of the young lads (Jatin Goswami) is Babu’s shagird in disguise. He looks up to him and hopes to beat him at his own game. What’s the game, really?
An action thriller Well there isn’t quite a well thought-out modus operandi frankly, besides that Babu does the hit-job and heads off to a home far away in the fields that no one knows
of. Perhaps even that doesn’t matter, since North India is cinematically very much the Wild West, where anything goes, and the boys have a lot to learn from Dirty Harry flicks playing dubbed in Hindi on their television set. Oh, and a n o t h e r thing about this film’s genre. The gun-
slinging hero is usually supposed to be a stylized action-star, walking in slo-mo to scintillating notes on the slide/electric guitar. There’s none of that here. There’s hardly any background score. If anything, Nawaz—the diminutive, casually softspoken Everyman in shirt and lungi—is the opposite of obvious swag. You’re naturally drawn to him nonetheless because you simply can’t take your eyes off his understated presence. This is not the first time. He literally stoops to conquer. The beauty of this film is also the sort of fresh talents you see around the li’l guy—the cop character is a complete
or the politician…. Together they represent a rather rooted, moody film with a fairly recognizable family tree, some of which
show up in obvious nods/tributes to pics like Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya (Babu and his wife at the door, when he returns home), or Gangs Of Wasseypur (the camera gazing at a naked man washing clothes by the tube-well, instead of a woman). Soundtrack sounds slightly Vishal Bharadwaj. Actually, come to think of it, if you took out all the characters and crime-history from Gangs Of Wasseypur, you’ll come close to this. Given what a masterpiece Gangs was, that’s a pretty good compliment by the way! champ, as is Babu’s competitor, or his wife,

Salman Khan’s Ganpati decorations are like a valley of flowers We know that festivals are gala affairs in the Khan household, and one of the most special occasions is Ganesh Chaturthi. The festival is celebrated with a lot of pomp and every year it is Arpita Khan Sharma who oversees the decor and other arrangements. Well, Salman Khan’s Ganpati is sitting amidst a valley of flowers this year. We
got this exclusive video and we are left speechless by the beauty of the setting. It looks like Lord Ganesha is sitting in the a stunning valley of flowers. Lights, flowers and adornments make it lovely to the hilt. (Also Read: How sweet! Salman Khan is the first guest at sister Arpita Khan Sharma’s residence for Ganesh Chaturthi) The video starts with a sweeping view of the decor. We can see what seems like millions of white flowers. They look like a combination
of white roses and carnations. The idol is placed against a backdrop of yellow flowers. As we know yellow is one of the most auspicious colours for religious functions. We can see that the chandelier lights are also decorated with a combination of white tuberoses and red roses. There cannot be a more fragrant and beautiful setting for Bappa. The ladies of the Khan family take a lot of interest in this. This year, the celebrations are happening at Arpita Khan Sharma’s new home, which is close to Galaxy Ap ar t m e nt s . She quoted to DNA, “When I’d decided to start keeping Ganpati, we didn’t know how long we would do so. It all just happened. Now after 14 years of celebrating it, it’s become a family function. We all look forward to celebrating it. I feel truly blessed to have Ganpati Bappa grace our new home with his presence first and then we will be moving in. Galaxy will always be blessed by Ganpati and the visarjan will be at Galaxy garden.” Although the celebrations are shifting to their new abode, everything else remains unchanged. It is still the family’s Ganpati. It’s still very much the entire family’s festival. Everyone’s going to be here. It’s just that it’s at a new destination. Salman bhai will also be coming for a day to be there with us.”

Neil Nitin Mukesh and his wife celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi Neil Nitin Mukesh will be celebrating his first Ganpati with his beau Rukmini this year at his residence and his family is going the extra mile to ensure it’s a memorable one. The theme for the family’s 23rd Ganpati will be based on the deities Krishna and Rukmini with Rasleela coming to life this year. As part of a traditional ceremony, Neil will make Rukmini wear an anklet right after the Ganpati Pooja that was given by the family’s spiritual consultant a few years ago to Neil’s mother Nishi Mukesh for her to-be daughter-in-law. After the first
few days of Ganesh Chaturthi, Neil will also be taking his first honeymoon with Rukmini to London and the couple will be gone for a whole five weeks. While Neil will be working for the first three weeks on his next film ‘Firrkie’, the remaining two weeks will be devoted to his wife. Neil Nitin Mukesh states, ‘My mother always desired of a Radharani theme for Ganpati since she is a devout Krishna follower so this year her long lasting desire has been fulfilled. It’s been exactly one year since I met Rukmini and Bappa truly fulfilled my heart’s desire.

‘Villa di Fonti’ estate in Surrey the price tag is $28 million
I
t’s an eye-popping real estate offering, in many ways. Two years after completing a 14,225 square-foot mansion in the “Tuscanvilla” style on Surrey agricultural reserve land, a B.C. couple is asking $28 million for the 76-acre property. The “Villa di Fonti” estate — boasting a 15-acre vineyard and cavalcade of luxury features that some realtors say they’ve never seen the likes of in B.C. — is now offered for $25 million over its current assessed value of $2.9 million. Two years after completing a 14,000 square-foot estate and 10-acre vineyard in the “Tuscan-estate” style on Surrey agricultural reserve land, a B.C. couple is asking $28 million for the 76-acre property. Focus Media / PNG Marketers hired to sell the property are mounting a slick video ad campaign targeting a “special buyer” — likely from Mainland China they say — willing to pay surreal money for an “Italian resort” built on the border of Surrey and Langley, on the 4000-block of 192nd Street. “Welcome to Villa di Fonti,” realtor Jin Ye says in a video aimed at ultrawealthy international buyers. “Once inside this architectural masterpiece, you’ll walk into an old world Tuscan villa estate, with all the modern luxuries you can imagine.” If a buyer comes even near the Surrey estate’s asking price of $28 million, the sale will shatter records for singlefamily real estate in the Fraser Valley. “Wow,” said Michael Gleboff, Fraser Valley Real Estate Board spokesman, after reviewing the property listing and historical price data for the Fraser Valley. “This is an anomaly.” Gleboff said only “a handful” of single-family homes have ever sold for over $10 million in the Fraser Valley. Some properties on the White Rock oceanfront have sold for between $8 and $13 million, in recent years, he said. But any property priced over $20 million in the Fraser Valley would typically be for a multi-family development. Two years after completing a 14,000 square-foot estate and 10-acre vineyard in the “Tuscan-estate” style on Surrey agricultural reserve land, a B.C. couple is asking $28 million for the 76-acre property. Realtor Carolyn Glazier said the property’s marketing team is preparing ads in a number of languages. Marketers are hoping to capitalize on several current trends. This property could appeal to the market of wealthy Chinese buyers currently scouring the world for wine-producing properties, Glazier said, in addition to the well-established pool
of Mainland Chinese buyers seeking luxury property in B.C. Glazier said there was a special zoning process in order to build the mansion on a residential lot within the property’s agricultural-zoned lands. Glazier said the owners spent several years building the mansion and they are now considering retirement and “down-sizing after living on the estate for a short time. The property has hosted movie shoots and private weddings. Glazier said from her perspective, the estate’s amphitheatre is its most “stunning asset.

Two years after completing a 14,000 square-foot estate and 10-acre vineyard in the “Tuscan-estate style on Surrey agricultural reserve land, a B.C. couple is asking $28 million for the 76-acre property. The property features two lakes, one stocked with trout, and the other with a manmade beach. There is a heli-pad, parking for 40 vehicles, an outdoor dining patio with pizza oven, golden fields and landscaped gardens, a koi-fish pond, and a variety of pools and fountains. The mansion’s interior — including copious quantities of world-class wood and stone building materials, a spa accessed by elevator and a climatecontrolled wine cellar — is not outshone by its external surroundings. “It really is fit for royalty, said home-stager Scotty Rolland, a native of California who says she is familiar with some of the most luxurious real estate offerings in North America. “I’ve never seen anything like it in B.C. “It’s the size and the features, Rolland said. “And it has really good feng shui. I believe there will be a buyer from China. B.C. assessment documents say residentialzoned land on the property is valued at $986,000, and farmland is valued at $76,000. Buildings on the property are valued at $1.84 million. Two years after completing a 14,000 square-foot estate and 10-acre vineyard in the “Tuscan-estate style on Surrey agricultural reserve land, a B.C. couple is asking $28 million for the 76-acre property.

has grown by 2.7 per cent in the previous 12 months. The average credit card balance was at $2,840 at the end of June, and on average, people owed $19,087 against their car, if they owned one. Some 23.7 million Canadians have at least one credit card, and there are 3.3 million auto loans across the country. The fastest growing type of debt, meanwhile, is installment loans, which are unsecured, high-interest, short-term loans, such as the ones often offered to buy home furnishings and other big ticket items. Among the 6.4 million Canadians who had one as of the end of June, the average balance was $20,466 — up 5.5 per cent in the past year. The delinquency rate for that type of debt is also the highest at four per cent, TransUnion said.
