South Asian woman faces racist death threats in Calgary Threats linked to Charlottesville violence aimed at school trustee candidate
Four Vancouver men have been charged after Vancouver police seized eight guns and more than two kilograms of illegal opioids as part of a five-month sting. The guns include assault rifles and a sawed-off shotgun, and police say more than half of the drugs contain fentanyl or fentanyl analogues. Police Supt. Mike Porteous said the guns, drugs and men charged are all believed to be linked to organized crime, gun violence and drug trafficking in the Lower Mainland. “As you can see, there’s been a significant amount of very dangerous weapons that have been taken off the street, Porteous said. “Looking at these weapons, [I don’t think] that anybody has them for going hunting or target shooting. Porteous said the seizure and charges are the result of an operation called “Project Tariff that began in early March after shots were fired at police in a standoff in southeast Vancouver. Two of the men — Jagraj Mushki Nijjar, 23, and Jaskaran Singh Heer, 22 — were charged with firearm possession offences in March. Two others — Harjot Singh Samra, 21, and Gary Gurpreet Dhillon, 25 — were charged with trafficking offences in early August. Continued on page 7

10-year-old Indian rape victim gives birth after court denies her abortion request
Recent report concluded rates must rise by 30% in next 2 years to cover costs British Columbia’s once-celebrated public auto insurer has become a financial train wreck, its critics say, as studies into the beleaguered Crown corporation call for dramatic rate hikes and drastic structural changes to save it from ruin. But while everyone appears to agree the system is broken, there is disagreement over how the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia went off the rails in the first place and what must be done to fix it. The crisis at ICBC is shaping up to be the first major financial hurdle for B.C.’s new NDP government. Attorney General David Eby, who is also the minister responsible for ICBC, blames the previous Liberal government for problems at the corporation. Continued on page 19
A 10-year-old Indian girl whose parents say she was raped and impregnated by her uncle has reportedly given birth after a court rejected her request for an abortion last month. Doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital in the northern city of Chandigarh delivered a baby girl through a C-section on Thursday morning. The young mother was about seven months pregnant. The newborn was underweight, about 5 1/2 pounds, but was
in stable condition. The girl’s parents found out she was pregnant earlier in the summer after she complained of stomach pains. She later told her parents that her uncle had raped her a half-dozen times at the family’s home. After the uncle was arrested, the parents and a Delhi-based advocate asked a court to allow her to terminate the pregnancy. In mid-July, a district court in Chandigarh ruled that the girl was too young and her pregnancy too advanced Continued on page 6

Trudeau’s attempt to score points sends the wrong message Hundreds of people are pouring across Canada’s border with the United States hoping to get refugee status here. They arre crossing the border illegally in part, because, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent out a tweet earlier this year welcoming anyone who wants to come here. Trudeau sent out the tweet hoping to score political points against US Presidrnt Donald Trump, who was trying to block people from certain Islamic countries from coming to USA. It led to the unintended consequence of having hundreds of thousands of people believe they could get to stay in Canada no matter what their circumstances. Not so fast. These people are not refugees by Canada’s own definition but are claiming refugeestatus anyway. According to the Government of Canada’s website, a refugee claim may not be legitimate if, among other things, the person “arrived via the Canada-United States border. The Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the U.S. requires that refugee claimants “request refugee protection in the first safe country they arrive in. As these refugees from various countries had already landed in the U.S., their claims should have been made there. But this law is being broken every day. So how will these people get to stay here? By the Trudeau govt ignoring Canada’s laws and allowing them to stay here. It would be far better if Trudeau and his incompetent Immigration Minister enforced existing laws and stopped people from illegally crossing the border.

10-year-old Indian rape victim gives birth after court denies her abortion request From page 3 In mid-July, a district court in Chandigarh ruled that the girl was too young and her pregnancy too advanced to have an abortion. The decision was based on a panel of doctors from the Government Medical College and Hospital, the hospital superintendent told The Washington Post at the time. “If you abort then the risk to life is greater,” the superintendent said. India’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act bars abortions beyond 20 weeks, though courts make exceptions in rare cases when the fetus isn’t viable or the mother’s life is at risk. The girl was 32 weeks pregnant when she was examined by doctors, who determined that the fetus was
viable. It is biologically possible for a girl to become pregnant as soon as she begins ovulating, though 10 years old is extremely young. Medical experts agree that carrying and delivering a baby at age 15 or younger, even through a C-section, poses lifethreatening risks. Pregnancy complications such as hemorrhaging, high blood pressure and obstructed labor were the leading cause of death among female adolescents in 2015, according to the World Health Organization. The Indian court’s decision to deny the young rape victim an abortion was met with alarm from some medical professionals in the country who said she should have been allowed to terminate the

pregnancy. “An abortion needs to be done immediately,” Puneet Bedi, a Delhi-based gynecologist, told the Indian news site the Quint. “Yes, there are risks and abortion at this stage is tough, but for the girl who is still developing, the scars will be many.” In a similar case this year, a court in the northern Indian state of Haryana permitted a 10-year-old girl who was 21 weeks pregnant to have an abortion after her mother alleged she was raped by her stepfather. India is home to the world’s largest population of sexually abused children, according to the BBC. More than 10,000 children were raped in India in 2015, the BBC reported, most of them by relatives or family friends.

in Calgary. In the first comment, Amjad was called a racial slur and asked what right she has to run for office in Canada. The post threatened that the neo-Nazi Aryan Guard group, which has been active in Calgary in the past, would find out where she lives, telling her to “beware.” Another post read: “you will be lying dead on the street like Heather Heyer.” Heyer is the 32-year-old protester killed after a car plowed through a crowd in Charlottesville, Va. where white supremacist groups and counter-protesters violently clashed. Education advocates spark backlash with tweets linking Charlottesville attack to alternative schools The protests and the political climate south of the border have raised questions over white supremacist groups and sentiment in Canada and whether what’s happening in the U.S. could be influencing behaviour here. Earlier this week, Calgary police said it would be “naive” to think Charlottesville violence couldn’t happen in Calgary. Recently in Calgary, a rally by members of Calgary’s Street Church turned violent when they clashed with anti-fascist protesters in front of City Hall. “I’ve been hearing that some elements are feeling more emboldened,” said Amjad, who thinks that could be a factor in Dr. Aly Kanani the threats she received. Certified Specialist in Orthodontics The link between events in the U.S. and the knock-on impact in Canada isn’t lost on Kelly Sundberg, associate professor at Mount Royal University’s department of economics, justice and policy studies. “It’s unfortunate that in so few days after the reprehensible events in the United States, we see some idiot in Calgary perpetuating this in our country,” said Sundberg. “I hope there’s an example set where this Dr. Aly Kanani and his team of Certified Specialists in Orthodontics are experienced individual is held to account.” with Invisalign having successfully treated over 3500 teens and adults! Kelly Sundberg, an assistant professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, says he hopes the police set an example in this case. “We have freedom of expression in Canada as guaranteed under the charter but we don’t have the right to threaten other people, invoke hatred,” he said. “Some research shows we’ve seen a rise in hate crime and these types of groups. AN EDUCATIONAL CONSULTATION TO REVIEW YOUR OPTIONS Somewhow they confuse Canada with the United States,” added Sundberg. Sundberg cites the recent Canada Creep voyeurism case as an example of police catching up with people who commit crimes online, and says Calgary police have the tools and technology to identify people, including the person in this case. Amjad says she is working office@guildfordorthodontics.com office@langleyorthodontics.com with Calgary police, who are guildfordorthodontics.com langleyorthodontics.com investigating the threats.

Surrey chiropractor found guilty of defrauding ICBC A Surrey chiropractor has been ordered to pay nearly $20,000 in fines and restitution after being found guilty of
defrauding ICBC. A B.C. Provincial Court judge has found Dr. Maninder Singh Badyal was convicted June 8 of committing fraud over $5,000 for billing the insurance corporation for treatments that were never performed. ICBC says the investigation into Badyal, owner of Absolute Health and Wellness Clinic in Surrey, began in October 2014 when an adjuster noticed irregularities in the documentation with one patient. Evidence presented in court showed 11 patients were directed to meet with Badyal, although none of them went to the clinic for chiropractic treatment. ICBC was billed for these initial consultations and subsequent chiropractic treatments that the patients denied to have received. “We have adjusters trained at looking for red flags and asking questions, said Chris Fairbridge, manager of ICBC’s special investigation unit. “In this case, it all started with a conversation our adjuster had with a customer about the treatment he was receiving and the customer said he hadn’t been in for any. On Wednesday, the judge sentenced Badyal to pay a $10,000 fine and $9,600 in restitution. ICBC claims insurance fraud costs British Columbians up to $600 million per year. “It’s an industry estimate that 10 to 20 per cent of claims contain an element of fraud, said Fairbridge.
4 South Asian men charged after Vancouver police seize drugs From page 3 Porteous said the amount of fentanyl seized by Vancouver police has been steadily increasing in recent years as the opioid overdose crisis worsens. “Two or three years ago, if you’d asked me a question about the prevalence of fentanyl on the streets of Vancouver, I would say, we know it’s out there, and sometimes we seize it, Porteous said. “Now, it’s unusual for us not to come across fentanyl in seizures of intravenous-based drugs.

StartRight with Scotiabank:
Four Tips for New Canadians TORONTO – (Aug 19) – Starting a new life in Canada can be an overwhelming experience. You’re often filled with uncertainty and questions – from legal, to financial and beyond. To help get you started on the path to achieving your hopes and dreams in Canada, Munsif Sheraly, Director of Multicultural Banking at Scotiabank, has four important tips:
1. Connect with resources that can help your family get settled: There can be so much to do when you arrive in Canada – find a home, a job, schools, a bank – it can be hard to know where to start. Scotiabank’s Newcomer Handbook gives you quick and easy access to things like: Government Information and assistance, jobs and careers, health, safety and your rights, education and training, Embassies in Canada and more. 2. Open a Canadian bank account and build a good credit history: Whether it’s your first month, or your first year in Canada – your credit history is very important. It is a record of how well you have paid off past debts or loans. It starts from your first credit card purchase, loan or line of credit from a bank. Building a good credit rating will go a long way to help you meet your future financial goals, like securing a mortgage when buying a home. A variety of Scotiabank credit cards are available to let you earn rewards or cash back with low interest while building your
Canadian credit history. 3. Enrol your children in school: Public education is paid through your taxes and therefore is free and available to every child in Canada. Parents must pre-register their children (usually ages 4-17) as soon as you arrive at the school or school board office in your area. The Government of Canada website is a helpful resource. 4. Plan for your future: You’ll soon find that you and your family have settled into a new routine in Canada and will start to think about long term goals - purchasing a home, putting money aside for your child’s education and investing in your retirement. Motorcyclists ride through Surrey protesting crime, drugs Riders with Sikh Motorcycle Club want city hall and the RCMP to ‘wake up,’ tackle crime Dozens of motorcyclists staged a protest ride through Surrey Wednesday with a message for the RCMP and city hall: save our kids. Sikh Motorcycle Club organizer Azad Sidhu says gang violence and drugs in the community have him worried about the safety of his university-aged son, and he’s not the only one. “We don’t feel that the kids are protected at all, they’re not safe and more needs to be done,” Sidhu told On The Coast guest host Michelle Eliot. He said there have been forums in the community and many have participated, but he’s seen no positive outcome. “This is basically another means of protest
we’re doing. We want to wake up city council and we want police to do strict measures to take care of this.” Sidhu says no parent “raises their kid to become a drug dealer,” but they also can’t watch them all hours of the day to make sure they’re not falling in with the wrong crowd. ‘Hatred and racism have no place in this city’:
Death0#*56"3: announcement
Mayor Robertson condemns far-right rally
As evacuation orders are downgraded and evacuees return home, the situation remains unpredictable It’s official: the B.C. Wildfire Service confirms the province is experiencing the
worst wildfire season on record. Wildfire Service information officer Kevin Skrepnek says an estimated 894,941 hectares of land has been charred in B.C. since April 1. That eclipses the mark set in 1958, when 855,000 hectares burned. “It’s an accurate reflection of what we’ve had in terms of growth over the weekend, he said. So far $315.7 million has been spent fighting the wildfires, creeping closer to the
2009 number of $382 million. But the news isn’t all bad. At its peak, more than 45,000 people were displaced from their homes. As of Wednesday, there are approximately 6,000 people on evacuation order. There have been no new road closures for several days and plenty of good news for evacuees. On Tuesday the Thompson Nicola Regional District lifted the evacuation order for the village of Clinton, which was evacuated two weeks ago, and surrounding areas to the south. In addition, orders for Spokin Lake, Soda Creek, and from Alexis Creek to Riske Creek have also been changed to alerts. The evacuation alert for Williams Lake, the largest community to be evacuated, has also been rescinded.

1st court date set for illegal Vancouver pot dispensaries After more than a year and 53 injunctions filed in B.C. Supreme Court, the City of Vancouver finally has a hearing date set for one case against an unlicensed marijuana dispensary. Inner workings of deadly Dhak Group detailed in court Two of the three men accused of killing gangster Jonathan Bacon had beads associating them with the gang leader who allegedly ordered the hit, a Kelowna court heard Wednesday. Jason McBride, Jujhar Khun-Khun and Michael Jones are on trial for the murder of Bacon and the attempted murder of Hells Angel Larry Amero and two women who were also in a Porsche Cayenne that was shot up the afternoon of Aug. 14, 2011, outside the Delta Grand hotel in downtown Kelowna. James Riach was also in the car, but he
Dhak Group had sets of beads, given to them by either Gurmit or Sukh, said the witness. “It was mainly Gurm’s crew that had them,” he said. “Jay (McBride) had a set. Sukh had a set. When Gurm was alive, the only guy in our little crew that had beads was Sukh. After Gurm died, Sukh started giving them to his crew, which was us and not everybody, just certain guys.” The witness described the beads as white gold balls with Chinese writing on them. The sets of beads cost about $5,000 to $6,000 each, he said. “Most of the guys had them way before me, then me and Manny (Hairan) wanted them and Sukh knew we wanted them, so he used that (and) he made us work harder for them, I guess you could say,” said the witness. Sukh also gave a set of the beads to Khun-Khun, said the witness. The witness described going to help McBride a week before the shooting when McBride’s green Ford Explorer broke down in Kelowna. When he arrived, the witness said three people were there, including McBride, whom he referred to as Jay, a woman and Jujhar Khun-Khun (left); who’s been charged with another man he described as being the death of Jonathan Bacon in a turf war over drugs. darker skinned. “I’d seen him with Jay Sukh Dhak is on the right before,” said the witness, adding the man was wearing beads, indicating escaped unhurt. Vancouver anti-immigration rally organizers celebrate violence online A group linked to an anti-immigration rally Saturday in Vancouver is using social media to celebrate the death of a woman killed by a white supremacist at a rally last weekend in Charlottesville, Va. The upcoming rally outside Vancouver City Hall is organized by the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam’s Canadian chapter (WCAI Canada), as well as the Cultural Action Party of Canada (CAP), according to an event Facebook page. Saturday, after protester Heather Heyer was allegedly mowed down and killed by a car driven by James Alex Fields Jr. at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, one of the Vancouver rally’s organizers — a man using the name Chadd Beneteau on Facebook — shared a meme on his personal page with the message “GOOD NIGHT LEFT SIDE” that
depicts the same make and model of car that killed Heyer and injured other protesters. The group behind that meme, WCAI USA, also posted a video clip to its Facebook page of the car striking protesters with the
Sometime after Gurmit Dhak’s death, the witness said he, Khun-Khun and Hairan were at Hairan’s house looking at photographs. “We were looking at a bunch of pictures out on Manny’s counter of Larry (Amero) and some other guys,” he said. “Manny was wearing a pair of gloves as he was flipping through them.” When asked if he could recall any particular photos of Amero, the witness said there was one that stood out. “There was a picture of Larry with Randy Naicker with their arms around each other standing on a deck with no shirts on,” he
said. “I remember there was a few different pictures of Larry, but that’s the one that stands out in my mind.” Crown counsel showed the witness a photo of Amero with his shirt off, and the witness confirmed it was Amero and pointed out a tattoo on Amero’s lower abdomen that read Hells. Wednesday’s testimony was part of a voir dire, used to determine the admissibility of evidence of discreditable conduct of one of more of the accused. Justice Allan Betton will rule on its admissibility at a later date. The trial continues

BC minimum wage to increase by 50 cents to $11.35 Government also commits to raising minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2021 BC NDP is following up on the previous government’s promise to increase the minimum wage by 50 cents to $11.35 per hour, effective Sept. 15, 2017. Labour Minister Harry Bains made the announcement Tuesday. “The 50 cents increase was a commitment made by the previous government that we as the new government will honour and legally implement, thereby creating a stepping stone towards our $15-an-hour goal, said Bains. The liquor servers’ wage will also rise by 50 cents to $10.10 per hour, while other minimum wage provisions will receive increases of 4.6 per cent. B.C. Labour Minister Harry Bains says the province still plans to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2021 but how it gets there is up to a commission. Barring changes from any other provinces, this increase will give B.C. the third highest minimum wage among the provinces, moving up from seventh.
Canada’s highest minimum wage is held by Nunavut at $13, while the lowest is Saskatchewan at $10.72. In a statement, Premier John Horgan said the increase is long overdue. “British Columbia’s lowest-paid workers need a raise, said Horgan. “The action we’re taking will make life better for working parents, seniors, new Canadians, students and more — these are people struggling to get by. Bains says the NDP government still plans to meet its campaign promise of raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2021. Alberta has promised to raise its minimum wage to $15 by October 2018, while Ontario plans to follow suit in January 2019. Irene Lanzinger, the president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, is calling for a minimum wage of $15 per hour well before 2021. B.C. Federation of Labour president, Irene Lanzinger says the NDP’s 2021 deadline is too late and insists the province should keep up with Alberta and Ontario.
Neo-Nazi flyers stuffed in Vancouver mailboxes
Asa Singh Johal celebrates 95th birthday at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas
An east Vancouver man hopes the appearance of a neo-Nazi flyer in his mailbox isn’t the start of a steady stream of literature. “I’m not against their right to advertise. I’m not against their right to distribute, said Tony, who asked that his last name not be published. “I’m just concerned that they feel it necessary to do that. Hopefully, it’s not an indication of more of this to come. The flyer appeared days after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where counter protester Heather Heyer was killed in an alleged auto attack. The Renfrew-Collingwood resident doesn’t believe that, in the fallout of those events, the ad pointing to a 27-part video series on Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany is a coincidence. “It’s better to have bad speech out in the open than repressed bad speech because that puts it underground, he said.

Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary named to list of world’s most livable cities Three Canadian cities ranked among the top 10 in this year’s list of the world’s most livable cities, while Melbourne held on to top spot for a seventh year in a row. Analysts at The Economist’s Intelligence
Unit released the 2017 edition of their Global Liveability Report, which ranks 140 cities based on their quality of life across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
ICBC researching discounts for drivers who disable smartphones
Over the last seven years, the list of the top five cities has changed little, aside from a few percentage points narrowing or broadening the gap between the top performers. For example, this year, only a 0.1 percentage point separates Melbourne from its nearest rival, Vienna. After Vienna, Vancouver and Toronto are ranked third and fourth on the list, followed by Calgary and Adelaide, which share the fifth spot. This year’s list saw 44 cities get bumped or promoted on the index, be it for falling crime rates, increased terror threats, instability, or increased tourist activity. Analysts point to an ongoing trend over the last few years in which several U.S. cities have registered declines in their scores due to growing civil unrest related to the number of police-related deaths of black Americans, and the divisive policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Drivers who voluntarily agree to disable their phones inside their vehicles could one day get a break on their auto insurance, under a plan being researched by the new NDP government. Attorney General David Eby said he has directed the Insurance Corporation of B.C. to research the feasibility of offering insurance discounts to drivers who agree to technological measures that prevent their phones from being used, in an attempt to guard against the proliferation of distracted driving. “Improving road safety is critical in getting a handle on distracted driving — people using cellphones, Eby said in an interview. “So there are other technologies we’ve asked ICBC to prepare proposals around — for example, there are plug-ins for cars that people can voluntarily take on in exchange for a reduced premium, or that new drivers could take on, that would prevent them from using their phones while driving. “I don’t know about the maturity of these technologies, or how pragmatic it is to be implementing them, but we should be looking at them and I’ve asked ICBC to do that. ICBC is scrambling to find ways to reduce costs, after an Ernst & Young report warned of possible rate hikes of 30 per cent for motorists unless the Crown auto insurer can rein in claims costs and legal fees. The
report recommended caps on certain injury claims, as well as a return to photo radar, the use of red-light intersection cameras to catch speeders, and increased police traffic enforcement to crack down on distracted driving. Eby has ruled out photo radar and
any move to no-fault insurance, but said he is researching the rest of the report. ICBC actually began researching the topic in April, putting out a request for information from any companies that could provide market research and antidistracted driving technology. “We did receive information from several suppliers in the marketplace in response to our RFI, but, at this time, we are in the process of reviewing those responses and conducting supplementary research into whether and how these technologies are being used in other jurisdictions before determining next steps, said ICBC spokesperson.

Man who left the scene after fatal crash sentenced to 4½ years Exactly four years to the day after he hit and killed a man with his truck in Surrey, Christopher Lennox Griffith was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. Griffith, 35, was convicted earlier this year of criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle and failing to remain at the scene after he fatally struck Robert Paterson, 40, in August, 2013. Before handing down his decision, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Jim Williams described Griffith’s driving record as “atrocious.â€? “From 2004 to the date of the offence, there are 10 separate 24-hour suspensions, eight other prohibitions or suspensions and 13 other offences, including three of driving without due care,â€? Williams
said in his ruling before he looked up from his notes to address Griffith directly. “Sir, I derive no pleasure in sending you to jail, I really don’t, but I feel that I have no choice. I hope you can turn your life around. From what everyone says, you appear to be a decent man.â€? Griffith was also banned from driving for 11½ years. Griffith read a letter to the court at his sentencing hearing earlier this week, saying there isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t think about what he called ‘that scary night.’ Court heard he had been out drinking with a friend on Aug. 17, 2013 when the pair went to Surrey’s notorious 135A Street strip where drug use and prostitution are common. Griffith dropped off his friend in a parking lot and then drove
away with a woman whom he paid for a sexual act. When he returned to the parking lot, he got into an altercation with an angry mob. Griffith revved his engine several times, then lurched forward, swerved to avoid the crowd and sped away. His truck hit Paterson near 135A Street and 106 Avenue.

3 U.S. visitors struck by Vancouver tour bus were from same family
Krishna Janamashtmi celebrations
Bus driver in incident that killed 1 had perfect record in 7 years with company, manager says Three tourists struck by a tour bus on Vancouver’s waterfront this weekend were all family members visiting from the U.S., police say. One of them, a 49-year-old
man, was killed in the crash just outside Canada Place on Sunday morning, when the bus collided with a parked SUV and hit pedestrians standing nearby. A 15-yearold girl suffered minor injuries in the crash and an elderly man remains in hospital with
serious injuries, Vancouver police said in a news release Monday. Police said the three family members were from Massachusetts. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have said the bus was travelling slowly before the collision. Flowers mark the place where a 49-year-old tourist was killed by a bus outside of Canada Place in Vancouver. The bus was operated by the Vancouver Trolley Company (VTC). On Monday, the company’s general manager, Stuart Coventry, told reporters that everyone at VTC was shocked by the tragedy. ‘It’s shaken us’ “Honestly, it’s shaken us in a way we could never really have been prepared for. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people who have been deeply and directly affected and their families. We can only imagine their pain and their suffering,” Coventry said.
BC Green Party leader slams NDP grizzly hunt ban as ‘political spin’ They might be allies on paper, but that hasn’t stopped the leader of the BC Green Party from lashing out against the NDP’s grizzly bear
trophy hunt ban. “It’s all political spin. There’s no ban. Let’s be very clear, there’s no ban on grizzly hunting in B.C. What there is is some loose language, promises that it will be made illegal to possess the hide or head or hair of
grizzlies,” Andrew Weaver told guest host Drex on CKNW’s the Jon McComb Show. Under the NDP’s new rules, hunting for grizzlies will be completely banned in the Great Bear Rainforest, and hunters elsewhere will only be allowed to keep bear meat, not trophy parts. The regulations would take place on November 30. But Weaver said under the NDP’s proposed rules, foreign trophy hunters could still come to B.C., shoot a grizzly, and pose for a trophy photo — regardless of whether they take the head or hide. He added that leaving those parts behind would actually be offensive to many B.C. hunters as wasteful.

Neighbours worried after Clayton hit-and-run Neighbours are asking questions after what they are calling a high-speed hitand-run in Clayton Heights Wednesday night.
According to Nichola Christi, she saw a sedan hit another vehicle at 68 Avenue and 193B Street before driving
Accident is said to have occurred around 10 p.m off just before 10 p.m. Surrey RCMP have confirmed that they were doing patrols in the area when they came across a collision just after 10 p.m. “People were driving home when a car with no lights on came out of nowhere and smashed into them and took off at breakneck speed,” she wrote on social media. “They were not apprehended.” According to police, the occupants of the hit vehicle believed that they were hit by a dark-coloured vehicle, possible a Nissan Sentra, that was driving westbound on 68 Avenue. The victims suffered only minor injuries. RCMP have not yet located any suspects. “This is all really upsetting and I have kids that are out playing in the evenings,” Christi said. “There’s tons of children out playing.” The crash happened right in front of Katzie Park, she noted, where there are “lots of people walking their dogs.” Anyone with more info on the collision or on the possible suspect vehicle is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Toronto woman facing terror charges to appear in court Monday now
A
judge has ordered a Torontoarea woman facing terrorrelated charges in an alleged attack at a Canadian Tire store to appear in court on Monday, by force if necessary. The order was issued for Rehab Dughmosh after the 32-year-old refused to leave her cell to attend a court hearing via video on Thursday. The Crown says Dughmosh believes she has said all that she needs to in court. Dughmosh faces a total of 21
charges, including attempted murder of at least three people for the benefit of or in association with a terrorist group. Police allege Dughmosh swung a golf club at Canadian Tire employees and a customer on June 3 and threatened them. They say she then pulled a large knife from under her clothes but store staff pried it out of her hands and restrained her. Media reports have said Dughmosh pledged her allegiance Rehab Dughmosh, 32, appeared in Toronto courtroom on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.

South Surrey BC Liberals spend the most in election Financial disclosures published Aug. 15 show that BC Liberal Party candidates in South Surrey spent the most on the 2017 election compared to their counterparts. Surrey-Panorama BC Liberal candidate Puneet Sandhar led the pack, spending $171,542 to lose the May 9 election to NDP MLA Jinny Sims, who tallied $100,521 in expenses. The biggest discrepancy between the two candidates was Sandhar’s $55,462 bill on media advertising, compared to Sims’ $2,210. Sandhar also spent $67,153 on newsletters and promotional material, while Sims’ spent $29,003. Sandhar’s bill was paid in full by the BC Liberal Party. Sims fundraised nearly $13,000 of her expenses, with the BC NDP picking up the rest. Sandhar’s bill was nearly doubled by a party colleague in a more northern part of the city. Surrey’s biggest-spending candidate was former BC Liberal cabinet minister Peter Fassbender, who dropped more than $317,000 to lose his Surrey-Fleetwood seat to BC NDP Jagrup Brar. Brar spent about $96,000. Surrey-South BC Liberal MLA Stephanie Cadieux spent $68,037 to secure the newly created seat, while her opponent, NDP candidate John Silviera, spent $19,690. Cadieux – who’s bill was fully covered by the BC Liberal Party – spent $13,200 on media advertising and $19,128 on newsletters and promotional material. Surrey-White Rock BC Liberal MLA Tracy Redies spent $76,215 to win the election. Her nearest opponent, New Democrat Niovi Patsicakis, spent $23,858. Redies spent $15,244 on promotional material and $12,350 on media advertising, her two largest expenses. Patsicakis spent $120 on media advertising and $7,504 on promotional material. Redies’ campaign was funded almost entirely by the BC Liberal Party. Patsicakis raised $1,459 and chipped in $727.70 out of her own pocket for her campaign; the rest of her bill was paid for by the NDP. Surrey-Cloverdale BC Liberal MLA Marvin Hunt spent 15 times as much as the riding’s next highest spender. According to the disclosures, Hunt spent $84,308 to NDP candidate Rebecca Smith’s $4,860. Hunt spent $11,612 on media advertising while Smith spent $588.

ICBC faces insolvency crises due to BC Liberals policies “ICBC, as described to me by senior bureaucrats, is on the path to insolvency,” Eby said. “It’s very unfortunate that it’s been left for so long, because I think there was really an opportunity to address this much earlier.” ICBC report says rates could climb 30% in next 2 years B.C. government launches review of ICBC rates ICBC says basic rates could rise 42% by 2020 in worst-case scenario Capital was irresistible to politicians ICBC was created in the early 1970s by the province’s first NDP government to provide affordable and universal auto insurance. All B.C. vehicle owners are required to purchase basic coverage through the corporation, though in 1976 the government began allowing private insurers to compete in offering additional optional coverage. Eby and other ICBC supporters single out the actions of former Liberal premier Gordon Campbell as marking the beginning of the corporation’s troubles. Campbell required ICBC to keep much higher amounts of backup capital. The resulting stockpile proved irresistible to politicians in 2010 following the global financial meltdown, critics say, when the government began siphoning hundreds of millions of dollars of “excess capital” almost every year. In all, the Liberals withdrew $1.2 billion from the lucrative optional side of ICBC’s business, and also transferred $1.4 billion to offset deficits on the compulsory side providing basic coverage beginning in 2012. ‘Somebody has to make some hard decisions’ “The reason we’re in a bind right now is that there’s no more money left in the optional piggy bank,” said retired civil servant Rick McCandless, who has written extensively on ICBC. “The music has stopped. You can’t play the game anymore. Somebody has to make some hard decisions. And that somebody is government.” Liberal member of the legislature John Yap said the New Democrats are playing politics in trying to lay blame for the problems at ICBC, which he largely attributed to the increasing number of collisions and claims
year-over-year along with rising repair costs. The Liberals’ priority was to keep rates low and stable while improving the operations and finances of the corporation through a number of measures, including foregoing the dividends from the optional side of the business as of last year and rolling in a new information technology system that would save the corporation millions, he said. “Government did take action,” Yap said. He said the Liberals understood there were challenges and had ICBC commission a third-party report on the financial situation to make recommendations, which the new government will be responsible to act on. Reports call for rate increases A recent report from Ernst & Young painted a dire picture at the Crown corporation, concluding that rates must increase by 30 per cent by 2019 to cover costs. A separate forecast released last November by ICBC indicated rates would need to increase by 42 per cent over the next five years to make up for expenses. McCandless pointed to a footnote in the ICBC report that an additional $1.5 billion is required in “capital from other sources” between 2017 and 2020. He calculated the cumulative rate hike to be closer to 117 per cent over four years. ICBC says an increase in accidents as well as both the number and cost of claims are contributing to its financial predicament. But experts say the insurance corporation has been slow to respond to the changes, which apply equally to other jurisdictions outside of B.C. Greg Basham, senior vice-president of ICBC in the late 1990s, said the Liberals’ decision to cut funding for the corporation’s road safety program undermined efforts to curb that trend. ICBC operates a full-tort legal system, as opposed to the no-fault model used in some other provinces that saves on pay-outs and legal fees by preventing victims from litigating for better compensation. It becomes a question of affordability versus treating victims fairly, McCandless said.
No price tag on ‘defending BC’s interests’ in pipeline expansion fight The province has set out its initial steps to “protect B.C.’s interests” with respect to Kinder Morgan’s $7.4 billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project, but has so far declined to say how much it expects that effort to cost. Attorney General David Eby has declined to say how much taxpayers are paying external legal counsel, Thomas Berger, to offer his advice on the province’s legal options, citing lawyer-client privacy. “The arrangements with Mr. Berger are privileged as their release would reveal details on government’s proposed course of legal action in relation to Trans Mountain,” Eby said in brief emailed statement in response to Postmedia’s request for information. He added that “(costs) for external counsel will be disclosed at fiscal year end.” David Eby and Environment Minister George Heyman revealed that government had retained Berger — one of Canada’s preeminent minds on First Nations law — to advise it on options to seek intervener status in the Federal Court case in which 21 other parties are challenging the federal approval of the project following what they argue was a flawed National Energy Board review process. Berger is also taking over the province’s representation in a B.C. Supreme Court lawsuit launched by the Squamish First Nation that argues its people weren’t
consulted adequately in relation to the provincial environmental certificate issued by the previous government in January. Heyman acknowledged last Thursday
that federal approval of the cross-province pipeline makes the government’s position challenging and that government has to tread carefully with respect to the file. Since taking office, Heyman, Premier John Horgan and other ministers have toned down their rhetoric about “(employing) every tool available to the new government to stop” the Trans Mountain expansion, rephrasing it as “every tool available to defend B.C.’s interests.” Heyman said government can’t unduly delay the issue of permits to Kinder Morgan for the project, but government will make sure permit applications meet constitutional requirements for adequate consultation with First Nations.

3,800 illegal asylum seekers intercepted crossing into Quebec In what the RCMP is calling an “unprecedented boom in asylum seekers, it says more than 3,800 people crossed the border illegally into Quebec during the two weeks spanning Aug. 1 to Aug. 15. The figures were released after RCMP held a technical briefing Thursday with the Canada Border Services Agency and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. “Our officers are patrolling 24 hours day, all year long and we have never seen such numbers coming in, said RCMP
spokesperson Claude Castonguay. According to Immigration, the RCMP also intercepted 2,996 asylum seekers crossing illegally into Quebec in July. Since June 1, the RCMP said, more than 7,000 people have illegally entered Canada. “Our officers have to check the identification of each individual to ensure they do not represent a danger or a threat to the Canadian population. We can assure you that the only law they’ve broken is entering the country illegally, Castonguay said.

Fallout from Charlottesville protests comes home to Quebec Several Quebecers have been identified among the white supremacist protesters at Charlottesville last weekend, including a prominent member of the far-right group La Meute. Footage from a VICE News documentary of the demonstration, which saw one woman killed and several injured when one of the protesters drove a car into a group of counter-protesters, was posted on the anti-Pegida Quebec Facebook page with the caption “Nazi wanted: do you recognize a neighbour, an employee or a co-worker in these photos? The caption suggests there is a strong possibility the protesters are from Quebec. The two already identified are Shawn Beauvais-MacDonald, reportedly in charge
of recruitment for the English-language Facebook page of La Meute, and Vincent Belanger Mercure, who was photographed in close proximity to to James Fields, the man behind the wheel of the car who is now charged with murder. As the fallout from the Charlottesville protests hits home to Quebec, La Meute has tried to distance itself from the violence, repeating that it is neither white-supremacist or racist. In response to questions from a La Presse reporter, a spokesman for the group, which now claims to have over 43,000 members, said it will investigate what Beauvais-MacDonald was doing in Virginia.

August Birthdays & Money Transfers Around the world, more people are celebrating their birthdays this month than any other months of the year. In fact, 19.5% of the population in India and 11.6% of China have their birthdays in August! To those who grew up in Canada, this is the time of the year where cake & candy comes to mind. However, in other parts of the world, many countries have their own long standing birthday traditions that don’t involve a sugar rush. For the Chinese, many customs often involve auspicious symbols, from the colour red to the lucky number 8; and birthdays are no exception. In China, a bowl of longevity noodles is a staple dish for this special occasion. The longer the noodle, the longer the life-span. It is said the noodle strands should be eaten bit by bit - without biting into it, to ensure a long & fruitful life. In India, young men celebrate their friend’s birthdays by taking him by the arms and legs, and “bumping” him up into the air with gentle kicks. Similar to birthday punches, The number of “bumps” given equals the age of the person in years plus one “for luck”. Jamaicans celebrate their loved ones’ birthdays with a tradition known as “flouring” Instead of baking a birthday cake with flour, the flour in thrown in the face of the birthday boy or girl. For those who live abroad, it’s often difficult knowing that you’re missing out on the celebration back home. As an alternative, many immigrants opt for sending home birthday money as their way of joining in the festivity. In fact, money transfers sent during special occasions make up a large portion of Canada’s global remittance. In 2015 alone, Canadians have sent approximately $24 billion abroad (source: cidpnsi.ca/remittances-explorer). The challenge for senders, however, is deciding which service provider to trust when sending the funds. The associated costs are of different types – fees, exchange rates, etc., and ease and speed of transfers also vary by banks/ financial institutions. It’s important to do a little bit of the homework upfront and know the right questions to ask before choosing who to go with. Six Things to Consider When You Want to Send Money Home 1. Is there a transfer fee? Certain companies charge separate transfer fees, which can make up a large percentage of the money you are sending, depending on the amount you are sending. 2. What’s the most convenient method of sending money home? Some companies make transferring money a challenging & unpleasant process. You may be required to be physically present, and also be asked to fill in plenty of paperwork every time you try to make a transaction. Then
there are others that offer the convenience of making international transfers straight from your smartphones. 3. What is the foreign exchange rate being utilized to calculate how much your intended recipient is going to be receiving? Watch out for the fine print. Is the exchange rate being calculated at the time when you are sending or when it arrives there? Sometimes a day or two can make a big difference. 4. How long is it going to take for your remittance to get to your intended recipient? Much like a courier service, you can pay for next day or it can take a number of days. A premium should be attributed to companies that get your money within a day. 5. What are the limits on how much you can send? Sometimes the amount you need to get to your family can be larger than the supplier limit. 6. Can you trust the company that you are sending the money with? Check the financial viability of the transfer service provider – is it a stable organization that you are relying on? After all, it is money that you are sending. The CIBC Global Money Transfer Advantage These are the questions that CIBC hoped to address when it created the Global Money Transfer Program for their customers. With the changing face of Canada, the bank repeatedly kept getting requests from customers for an affordable and safe way to send money to their native countries. In response to the request and understanding the customer pain points, CIBC decided there would be zero transfer fee for CIBC customers, while offering competitive exchange rates. Between these two factors alone, customers are often saving a significant amount of money. In all cases, the foreign exchange rate is calculated at the time the money is sent. In most cases, money arrives within a day of transmission. No premium is charged for this quick service. Also in response to customer needs, CIBC has one of the highest daily transfer amounts available, i.e., $9,999.99 to India and over other 40 countries ($6000 to China). CIBC takes pride in the convenience our customers enjoy when making a transfer. Whether it is through a branch, online or through your phone, sending money is intuitive & simple. As for trust, CIBC is CIBC. It is one of Canada’s top banks, providing you with the assurance of 150 years of banking expertise. No matter how you celebrate it, birthdays are great ways to shower your loved ones with gifts & blessings. This month, let CIBC Global Money Transfer help you deliver your best wishes to them.
CIBC to swallow PC Financial’s banking business by rebranding it as Simplii President’s Choice is getting out of the daily banking business and more than two million current PC Financial customers are moving to CIBC, which will rebrand the bank as Simplii. The two companies announced the end of their almost 20-year collaboration on Wednesday, as Loblaw says it will retain its loyalty point program and MasterCardbranded credit card program, while all daily chequing, savings, lending and other banking services will move to CIBC, which has been running the back end of the bank’s operations
behind the scenes since it launched. The bank promises a seamless transition with no changes to account numbers or pre-existing automatic payment and savings plans while it absorbs more than 2 million PC customers between now and November. How to fight back against rising bank fees Is your bank ripping you off? How would you even know? “We are excited about the future and our ability to create new products to serve Canadians,” PC Financial spokesperson Lana Gogas said in a statement.

Bangladesh sees fresh influx of Rohingya from Myanmar Hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have crossed into Bangladesh in recent days following a fresh military build-up in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, community leaders said Wednesday. . They said at least 500 Rohingya had made the difficult journey into Bangladesh, some claiming they had been abused by soldiers in Myanmar. The latest influx follows a months-long bloody military crackdown on the mainly Muslim
minority in Myanmar last year that led tens of thousands to flee across the border. The United Nations has said the violence may amount to ethnic cleansing. Abu Toyyob said he escaped with his seven-member family as the army vandalised Rohingya houses and detained young men. “They arrested my younger brother from home and injured my two-year-old son by kicking him with boots,” the 25-year-old told reporters.
Death toll in Nepal floods climbs to 91 The death toll in rain- triggered floods and landslides in Nepal has climbed to 91 with 38 persons still missing and over six million people affected by natural calamity. Nepal Ministry of Home Affairs said 2,847 houses were completely damaged in the disaster, My Republica reported. “A committee was formed under the coordination of Home Minister Janardan Sharma to tally details of the loss. The chief secretary and secretaries of 12 ministries are members of the committee,” Ram Krishna Subedi, spokesperson of the Home Ministry, was quoted by the report. The death toll reached 91 as of Monday evening, the Home Ministry said, adding that normal life in different parts of the country was severely affected while a large number of people were reported displaced by floods, landslides and inundations. It has also said that the government has accelerated the task of rescue and relief operations as well as search for those missing in the flooding and inundation, with more than 26,700 security personnel directly deployed for post-disaster rescue and relief operations. A total of 13 helicopters, including seven of Nepal Army, motorboats, rubber boats and other equipment are being used for search, rescue and relief measures. Ministry’s spokesperson Ram Krishna Subedi said that tarps, cooking pots, dry foods, salt, vegetable oil and other relief materials have also been distributed in the affected districts. Heavy rainfall has lashed Nepal for the past five days, leading to the swelling of several rivers beyond the danger mark and causing flooding and landslides at many places. Rapti river, which flows through a large part of Nepal towards the southern plains, flooded human settlements and hotels popular with tourists in the Chitwan Valley. All the 35 Indian nationals, who were stranded in Sauraha, a part of the
Chitawan National Park, have been rescued, an Indian Embassy spokesperson said. They were rescued to safer place by using tamed elephants. Earlier reports quoting local authorities had said that 200 Indian tourists were among the 700 stranded people, but the Indian Embassy official said only 35 of them were Indian nationals. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), at least 14 people were killed by landslide in Morang district, taking the death toll in the district to more than 17 and overall to 91. Thirty five people have been also missing since Friday. The monsoon havoc has affected 27 districts spanning from the eastern, central to the western regions. Floods and landslides caused by torrential monsoon rains have killed at least 25 people in the last two days across Nepal, officials said on Saturday. Heavy rains have hit more than a dozen districts in the country’s far eastern region as well as some areas in the west since Friday morning, the home ministry said. Flooding has occurred across the densely populated lowlands that border India, while some remote districts in the hilly areas of the far east have been hit by landslides triggered by the monsoon rains. “We are still collecting the details of the loss. According to the preliminary reports to the ministry over 25 people are feared dead,” Home Ministry spokesperson Deepak Kafle told.

Authority can deny arms licence if it fears misuse: HC Maintaining that the culmination of criminal cases against a person is no ground for granting arms licence, the High Court has ruled that the competent authority is entitled to reject request for the same if the applicant’s general conduct indicates possibility of misuse. The order, laying down the guidelines for the grant of licences, is significant as Punjab has the largest number of arms licence holders in the country. In his order, Justice Rajan Gupta added that the plea that no case survived against the applicant could not be a ground for the grant of licence. The authority was required to keep it in mind that life and liberty of other citizens was as important as that of the person wanting to possess a weapon. Justice Gupta asserted that the competent authority was entitled to reject an applicant’s request, in case his general conduct indicated possibility of weapon misuse. It would also not be appropriate to grant arms licence if the applicant’s record showed he was easily provoked and had propensity to harm others as it might endanger life of fellow citizens, his close family or even friends. Justice Gupta added mere fact that a person had been acquitted in criminal cases, or FIR had been cancelled, too, would not weigh with the authority for providing him an arms licence.

“My ministry usually receives numerous applications from other states for new projects, but my own state’s farmers and industrialists are hardly applying. Their presence is negligible as the Congress government is not spreading awareness about our projects and incentives,” Harsimrat said after attending a seminar organised by her ministry here. “Of the Rs 6,000-crore projects, I want to give the maximum to my state. But the Chief Minister, Finance Minister and the bureaucrats are not taking my letters seriously due to political reasons. Participants from all over the world are keen to attend World Food India-2017 in November, but Punjab has not applied yet despite my repeated reminders,” she said. She said PAU officials were misleading the CM by claiming that the crop losses were meagre. She demanded action against Vikas Barala, main accused in the Chandigarh stalking and abduction bid case, but didn’t reply when asked whether Vikas’ father,
Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, should resign. Former Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa and other SAD leaders were present at the seminar. Patriotic fervour grips India on 71st Independence Day Patriotic fervour gripped the nation on the 71st Independence Day on Tuesday as people from across states and union territories came together to celebrate the occasion underlining the spirit of unity in diversity. As chief ministers hoisted the Tricolour amid tight security, they announced development programmes, flagged challenges confronting them and pledged to take their states forward. J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti used the occasion to talk about her state’s special status, express hope in country’s institutions and attacked Pakistan for fuelling violence in the state. On Article 35A, which has been challenged in the apex court, she said, “I am sure the Supreme Court will dismiss the present petition before it. Mehbooba said the
people of the state decided to accede to India as they found similarities in the pluralism that existed in the state and the country. She said many people across the country believed that J&K is the crown of India. “There is no doubt about it and it should remain like that, she added.
Defence Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav
The country faces the “biggest threat from China, former Defence Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday said, claiming that it is plotting to attack India in collaboration with Pakistan. “There are a number of threats before the country but the biggest threat is from China...it is continuously encroaching on our land and is planning to attack but is not able to advance because of our Army, he said at a function here. “China is preparing to attack India in collaboration with Pakistan. This collaboration of China and Pakistan is dangerous for us...this matter should be taken seriously, the Samajwadi Party patriarch said. Referring to the contribution of Lohia, JP and other socialist leaders in the freedom struggle, the SP founder said people have faith in the socialists and they need to raise their voice against injustice. There are a number of problems before the country like unemployment, poverty, farmers’ plight, women’s safety, terrorism and security of borders and all need to stay together in dealing with them, he said. Mulayam, who had been dethroned by his son Akhilesh from the post of party president earlier this year, however, did not respond to a suggestion made by his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav in his speech earlier that it was time for him to think about the party. Shivpal had said that those who claimed to have strengthened the party in fact weakened it and appealed to Mulayam that it was time now for him to decide as the “Samajwadis of the state are looking to him for taking the party forward.

Final decision on Methodist Church’s Indian Division name expected to be made next week The Methodist Church in Fiji is still continuing to have an Indian Division however a final decision is expected to be made next week. Calls have already been made by the Indian Division of the Methodist Church in Fiji to change its name since it is a race based name for the division. This motion was moved by the Indian Division of the church at their Annual Conference at Centenary Church in August last year. Church Secretary for Communications Reverend James Bhagwan says the church had asked the division to write back to them and give the reasons on why they want the name change. He says the issue will be discussed in the Methodist Church Conference next week. It was highlighted last year that the motion was referred to the Executive Committee to discuss the appropriateness of the changing of the
name. Reverend Bhagwan had said that they will need to think of an appropriate name and change it if it needs to be done. Fijivillage has raised this issue in the past on why the Methodist Church continues to have an Indian Division for its church as it is based on race. Earlier statements from the church had said that the community wanted to stick to the name. However this division has made it clear that they do not want a race based name. Meanwhile the overall membership of the Methodist Church in Fiji is expected to be revealed next week. The 2016 Statistics Report presented in last year’s conference showed that 3,554 members left the church in the 12 month period.
Military band to celebrate 100 years The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) brass band turns 100 years. Military chief staff officer coordination, Captain Eroni Duaibe has confirmed that the centennial celebration will be held at the Officers’ Mess at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva. In a press conference at their headquarters at Berkley Crescent in Suva Captain Duaibe said the band was initially the Fiji Defence Forces Band. The band was established during World War I, and was known as the
Suva Town Band. “After the Fiji Defence Force Band was established in 1917, it became an integral part of the rifle company that carried out normal infantry training when it was not engaged in band practice or performance,” Captain Duaibe said. Between WWI and WWII, the band continued to rise in prominence but had to be disbanded at the outbreak of WWII. Captain Duaibe said this was because the band members joined the newly formed military units.

Anxiety grips Indo-Americans after violence A disquiet anxiety has gripped the residents of Charlottesville, many of whom are Indian Americans, after a rally of white supremacists ended in clashes with counterprotesters and claimed the life of a woman. While normalcy seemed to have returned to the city by yesterday afternoon, residents grappled with shock and fear following a day of violence when a car rammed into a crowd peacefully protesting against the rally by white supremacists, killing the 32-year-old woman. The city in the US state of Virginia has a significant Indian and Indian-American
population, but there was no report of anyone from the community being injured in the violence on Saturday. Two police officers monitoring the demonstration died after a helicopter crashed near the protest site and 19 others were injured, though, unofficial figures could be high. “It’s still difficult for us to understand and grapple with the reality that such a thing has happened. This is not what the city is about,” said Sankaran Venkataraman, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, MasterCard, Professor of Business Administration.

How Nolan forgot the desis at Dunkirk “There were no Pakis at Dunkirk,” the late Bernard Manning had once remarked on the Mrs Merton Show, a BBC TV show during the 1990s. The British comedian had continued with his verbal assault by claiming that there were “no Pakis” (read Indians) at Anzio, Arnhem or Monte Cassino — all famous World War II battles. While many Britons wouldn’t subscribe to Manning’s view of the Indian role in WWII, it did reflect a general lack of awareness about their contribution. But that was 20 years ago. Today, a great amount of literature is available on the role of Britain’s colonies in the Allied war effort. Oxford historian Y a s m i n Khan says succinctly in her book, The Raj At War: “Britain did not fight the Second World War, the British Empire did.” The British public is more wellinformed today about the Indian role in the world wars. The Indians were there at Monte Cassino. They were there at Bir Hachiem, Tobruk, El Alamein, Singapore, Hong Kong. And they were there from where it all began — Dunkirk. At the start of the war in 1939, the British Army was said to have been the only fully mechanised army in the world (Soviet Union’s Red Army was said to be the most technologically advanced). But when the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) went to France, the need for animal transport was
felt. Unlike the British, the Indian Army was still not mechanised. It had 96 infantry battalions and 18 cavalry regiments with only two being ordered to give up horses for tanks a little before the war. So the pack animals and their handlers had to come from India. Four Indian Animal Transport companies of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps were sent to aid the BEF from Bombay. This group was designated as Force K-6 and reached France in December 1939. Most of the men were Punjabi Muslims with some Pathans,
and primarily came from areas that today form part of Pakistan. As history tells us, the Germans broke through the Ardennes and sprang a nasty surprise on the Allies. And the BEF had to retreat to Dunkirk from Belgium, with the sea at their back. The retreat was chaotic involving many losses. But amid the chaos, the Indian troops showed grit, determination and order. This is attested by the citation of Indian Distinguished Service Medal awarded to Jemadar Maula Dad Khan, a VCO (Viceroy’s Commissioned Officer).

UK to scrap ‘outdated’ landing cards for Indians
Five Indian-origin persons in Fortune’s ‘40 Under 40’ list Five Indian-origin persons, including Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, have featured in Fortune’s annual list of 40 young and influential people in the field of business inspiring others with their work. Fortune’s 2017 ‘40 Under 40’ list is an annual ranking of the most influential young people who are under 40 in business, whom the magazine termed as “disruptors, innovators, rebels and artists inspiring others. The list has been topped by 39-year-old French President Emmanuel Macron “France’s youngest leader since Napoleon who swept the presidential elections in May “obliterating the two-party system that had governed the country for generations. The Indian-origin persons on the list are 26-year-old Divya Nag, who oversees Apple’s ambitious ResearchKit and CareKit programmes that encourage developers to build health-related apps, Rishi Shah, 31, and Shradha Agarwal, 32, who helm more than 10-year-old health-tech firm Outcome Health and CEO and founder of non-profit Samasource
31-year-old Leila Janah. Varadkar, 38, whose father was born in India, has been ranked fifth on the list. Fortune said while Ireland has long defined mass emigration, “yet remarkably, its new prime minister is the son of a Hindu immigrant from Mumbai. The former doctor is Ireland’s youngest leader in centuries as well as its first-ever openly gay one, “no small detail in his devoutly Catholic country. Varadkar, however, dismisses all that as irrelevant. “Far more crucial is his ability to protect the Celtic Tiger against economic disaster when Britain exits the EU in 2019, and guarding Ireland’s lowtax deals with tech giants. Many are rooting for his success, Fortune said. On Nag, who has been ranked 27th, Fortune said the Stanford d r o p o u t founded a stem-cell research startup.
Indian visitors in US spent a record $13.6bn in 2016
WASHINGTON: Indian visitors spent a record $13.6 billion in the US last year, positioning India on the sixth spot among the top 10 international markets for the US in terms of visitor spending. As many as 1.17 million Indians visited the US in 2016. India is ranked 11th in terms of number of international visitors to the US in 2016. A total of 75.6 million international visitors came to the US in 2016 for business, medical, education and leisure purposes, who collectively spent $244.7 billion across the country. Compared to 2015, visitor arrivals decreased by two per cent and visitor spending decreased one per cent. It was the first decline in visitors since 2009, the US Department of Commerce said in its latest annual report. In 2016, travel and tourism was the largest services export for the US, comprising 33 per cent of services exports and 11 per cent of exports overall, it said.

Non-EU visitors including Indians arriving in the UK will soon be no longer required to fill the “outdated landing cards as part of the ongoing digital transformation of border controls, the Home Office has said. Landing cards are filled out by an estimated 16 million international visitors from outside the European Union (EU), including Indians, annually. Under proposals published yesterday, the UK Home Office said the paper-based system, which costs the UK public around 3.6 million pounds ($4.6 million) each year, will be replaced as part of the UK Border Force’s ongoing digital transformation of border controls. “We are modernising border technology to ensure Border Force staff stop dealing with outdated paperwork and can
continue to focus on security and protecting the public, said Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis. “In addition, this change will improve the experience for arriving passengers so they get an even better welcome when they land in the UK, he said. The withdrawal of landing cards, filled out by nonEU passengers since 1971, will not result in the loss of any data that is used for security checks, the Home Office said. All passengers arriving from outside the EU will continue to be checked against the variety of police, security and immigration watch lists which are used to verify the identity and confirm the status of every passenger arriving at the British airports.

Y
ou know how most of us get embarrassed when it comes to talking about toilet in public. I mean, I remember the other day when I was discussing about having a terrible stomach upset with one of my office colleagues, this another
friend overheard our conversation and made such a disgusting face by judging me for sharing the details
of my poop. Like that’s what most of our “Tatti Talks” lead to or the max is we use end up using the word like a friendly abuse. But same is not the case with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, who were actually such a sport when I got them to take me inside their Toilet, EXCLUSIVELY on BollywoodLife. Yes, this happened! Considering Akshay and Bhumi are out with their film titled Toilet Ek Prem Katha that deals with the issue of open defecation, I got both of them to get into BollywoodLife’s “Tatti Talk Challenge”. Basically the actors had to answer everything about what one does in the Toilet within 5 seconds and boy, it turned out to be so damn hilarious! We asked Anushka about all things Gujarati and here’s how she fared!
W
e tested Jab Harry Met Sejal actor Anushka Sharma’ Gujarati knowledge – find out if she passed or failed Well, we were pretty impressed with Anushka Sharma’s Gujarati accent in Jab Harry Met Sejal. The actress managed to surprise us with the Gujju twist at the end of the peppy Radha track. Now we know that Anushka doesn’t sign for anything if she isn’t convinced about it. So, we tried to put the actress to rest by playing a Gujarati food quiz with her. Guess what Anushka proved to be pretty good and very very smart too. For most part of this candid conversation the actress managed to win and when she didn’t she tricked us in to believing that she knew it. We must Anushka is pretty good at her job (acting). opposite SRK in Bollywood with Yash Raj Films’ Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The actress went on to feature in Late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan with King Khan in lead.
‘Mubarakan’ beats recoreds
I
n a time when it’s difficult for Bollywood films to even sustain after the opening weekend, Arjun Kapoor and Anil Kapoor’s Mubarakan has not only sustained but it did so, despite strong competition with ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. The film started slow but gradually on word of mouth gained momentum and turned out to be one of most talked about success story of 2017. But what really showcased the might of the film was when Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal released. Many were of opinion that it’ll be a tough road ahead for Arjun Kapoor’s entertainer as Shah
Rukh Khan will eat up all the business. But what happened next was nothing short of a blockbuster script. The film not only sustained against the might of Jab
Harry........’but it also beat it gradually as Jab Harry Met Sejal was outright rejected by the movie going audience.

Chick flick gets going There or Richa Chadha and Kalki Koechlin have begun promotions for Jia Aur Jia. The women-centric drama, which was shot almost four years ago, is finally seeing the light of day. The two were in Delhi yesterday for the teaser launch. Chadha claimed she was down with swine flu recently. She seems to have recovered in a jiffy as she has been up and about ever since.

Anushka Sharma was spotted at the airport recently wearing a T-shirt that read: Distraction. Those in the know say that she has winged her way to Sri Lanka. Snapshots of her and beau Virat Kohli have not gone viral from the island nation. Maybe she is playing it safe and keeping a low profile while doing touristy things. In 2014, when Sharma was shooting in Lanka for Bombay Velvet, Kohli had dropped in to meet her.
Sairat (2016) director Nagraj Manjule’s next starring Amitabh Bachchan has been titled Jhund. Last week, Big B confirmed the project and said that shooting begins in October. The film is based on the life of Vijay Barse, a retired school teacher from Pune, who trains underprivileged children in football to not only enhance fitness but also develop skills like team-building and selfesteem. Jhund marks Manjule’s debut in Bollywood.
ON THE SET
Rani keeps it short Yesterday, Rani Mukerji was spotted at Gauri Khan’s home decor store in Santa Cruz. The actor has lost oodles of weight. It’s been ages since we saw her in a short skirt showing off her pins. Mukerji wrapped up the shoot of Hitchki a while back, but there has been no word about its release date.
Let’s go politicking Bhumi Pednekar’s Twitter profile reads: Actor, dreamer and future leader. She has been part of socially relevant films like Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) which dealt with body shaming and her recent release, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, in which she plays a fiery housewife wanting to build a toilet at home. Her next Shubh Mangal Savdhan, deals with the social stigma of erectile dysfunction. Being socially conscious has made the actor look at politics as the next step. Perhaps she has been inspired by Toilet co-star Akshay Kumar, who too harbours political aspirations.
Jay Bhanushali and Swara Bhaskar began shooting for the short film, Suicide Company Private Limited, yesterday. It highlights the plight of the youngsters and what drives them to take their lives. PIC/YOGEN SHAH

Initially, Shah Rukh Khan’s production house had expressed interest followed by others, who too were keen to bring the book alive on celluloid. Now there is word that the film will be made with Sonam Kapoor. The makers want to keep things under wraps for now. It will roll after Sonam completes Veerey Di Wedding, which kicks off next month.

‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ movie review roundup: Critics are divided over the writing of Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon comedy Such polarising reviews for a film in the longest time?
W
e have to laud Bollywood for finally investing in commercially viable stories from the small towns. This year, many films were set in the small towns and villages of India and featured characters with a certain rustic charm about them. The latest one is today’s release, Bareilly Ki Barfi. Director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari has proved that she can weave a sustainable story without the glitz and glam of a metropolitan city with Nil Battey Sannatta, and with BKB, she does it again. The romantic comedy stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. The movie opened in theaters today, but the critics had already let their
verdict out yesterday, after attending a special screening of the film, organised by the makers. And Bollywood has not seen such polarising reviews for a film in the longest time. Seriously, the movie has been awarded from one to five stars by various critics in their reviews. As we always say, audience gets the final vote, but still here is what the critics are saying about Bareilly Ki Barfi… From BollywoodLife, Sreeju Sudhakaran watched the movie and enjoyed it. In a 3-star review he wrote, “Bareilly ki Barfi boasts of a delightful first half, but a weak second half. But some really funny writing and terrific performances by Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana, along with a brilliant supporting cast, add sweetness to the narrative. While it may not get high marks in its screenplay, it definitely is one of the better rom-coms of the year.” NDTV wrote, “Bareilly Ki Barfi is definitely worth a watch provided you do not expect the world from it. It is happy to be what it is: a modest barfi from nondescript Bareilly. A bite wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Reddif was in awe of the script and wrote “The script has an energy that seems to have sent all the actors over the rainbow and out they slide from the other end, with their characters’ daze firmly fixed inside them.” India Today, too, found the film to be
delightful. “After Nil Battey Sannata, director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari brings us another engaging watch. There is no dull moment in the film. Light and fluffy, Bareilly Ki Barfi is no heavy seven-course meal, but it is quite the delicious dessert,” they wrote. Times Of India was also in love with the writing and said, “The writers Nitesh Tiwari
(director and writer of the much-acclaimed blockbuster Dangal) and Shreyas Jain have put together a sweet, identifiable crowdpleaser that excels in the writing, direction, acting and music departments.” The Indian Express in a 2.5 star review wrote, “This Small-Town Rom Com ticks all the boxes going in: perky girl armed with requisite quirky parents, a couple of suitable
boys, and great one liners. And it does work in fits and starts, but it flattens equally in between.” Firstpost ripped apart the movie into pieces in their 1-star review, and wrote “BKB’s male leads are victims of half-hearted writing, lost to the most inconsistent characterisation I have seen in a Hindi film in a while. The motivations for their actions are unconvincing.”

T
o get a glimpse of Sunny Leone. It was a sea of heads‌that’s all one could see. The actress had shared pictures of the crowd. Of course, the actress was beside herself on seeing so many people showering love on her. In fact, Twitter had gone crazy showing videos of the event. Well now all that has left the organisers in a sticky position. Sunny was there for the inauguration of a mobile store and now, as per a report in Indian Express, the store owner and 100 others have been booked by the police for blocking traffic in the city for hours yesterday. Police apparently had a trying time
controlling the crowd which had assembled to get to see Sunny at least once. The daily also reported, “The mobile store owner and 100 others were booked under IPC sections 283 (obstruction in public way) and 34 (acts
done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), police said. Well, you can see for yourself why such measures was taken.
Why Kapil loses out on an episode with Amitabh Bachchan? From page 1 Mubarakaan) shoots on The Kapil Sharma Show as he had to be rushed to the hospital last minute. And, the latest one to join the bandwagon is Amitabh Bachchan. Big B was all set to shoot a special episode with Kapil, but due to the ongoing FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) strike, the shooting had to be cancelled. As per reports, all spotboys, light-men and make-up artistes have gone on a strike. FWICE had sent a notice to the Producers’ Guild, demanding a hike in their wages. They had mentioned that if their demands are not fulfilled they will go on a strike from August 15. But, it seems their plea went unnoticed. The union of cine employees, hence, followed their decision and went on the strike. This has resulted into not just delays but cancellations of many shoots. Not just KBC, but the strike affected the shoot of movies like Padmavati, Parmanu and Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Aanand L Rai, too. Mumbai’s Film
City, Filmistan Studio, Future Studio, Click Nickson, Cinevista Studio and all shoot locations in Madh Island, Mira Road and Naigaon have been shut for now. Shoot of almost 40 TV serials in Hindi and Marathi along with 10 Hindi film shoots are on stake. Back in 2015 too, FWICE had gone on a strike; demanding salary increment, eighthour shift, accidental and medical insurance, safety and job security. The producers’ body had agreed to fulfill the demands but according to FWICE President Birendra Nath Tiwari and General Secretary Dilip Pithawa, their promises haven’t been met till date. During that time also there was no shoot for almost a week and channels had to telecast old episodes of TV serials with no ad breaks.

DEADLINE TODAY! Indo-Canadian Singer/ Composer, Parichay, known for his smooth vocals and catchy beats, has collaborated with the beautiful Bollywood beauty, Nargis Fakhri & Canadian Rap legend, Kardinal Offishall on his new single “ Habitaan Vigaad Di “, making it the first ever crossover track to feature such major artistes from the East & West. Parichay, who last year became the 1st Non-Resident Indian ever to do 4 out of 5 songs in a mainstream Bollywood film soundtrack for the production powerhouse TIPS and received much acclaim for the super hit track Peene Ki Tamanna, has perfected the blend of East-West sounds in “Habitaan Vigaad Di”. While Nargis was roped in to feature in the music video once she heard and liked the song, Parichay was able to convince her to sing the hook line. She sounds great and to that Nargis tweeted “ Thanks @ParichayOnline for asking me to give it a try! Glad I did! What fun! “ . Most recently, at the prestigious IIFA Awards 2017 held in New York City and New Jersey, actor Varun Dhawan is seen talking about this single along with Nargis and the hosts. The video is available on YouTube HERE Kardinal Offishall, who was recently applauded by Drake at the O2 Arena during a concert in London by
saying “One of the biggest rappers in the world to me, is this guy by the name of Kardinal Offishall” adds a new dimension to the track with his distinct rap flow and lyrics. Parichay was recently heard saying “As a fellow Canadian Artist, I always had a lot of respect for Kardi and loved his music. We have a few common friends and I’ve been wanting to work with him for a while but I knew it’ll happen when the time is right. Working with him on Habitaan Vigaad Di along with Nargis was a blessing”. “Habitaan Vigaad Di “ has an Urban sound with a dancehall flavour that is just right for the summer vibes, with lyrics in Punjabi, Hindi & English penned by legendary lyricist Kumaar, Kardinal Offishall & Parichay. Parichay’s vocals sound silky smooth to give this track the sensual feel it oozes. He has produced the music as well and is currently in the studio laying final touches on his next single release rumoured to be with another major international artist. While we have to wait and see who that is, “Habitaan Vigaad Di” continues its high rotation on the BBC Asian Network and radio stations worldwide with the video being featured on TV channels across the globe and YouTube with just over 1.6 Million views already.

2017 Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary

roof, all four doors and the upper tailgate are all still removable. You better have a spare spot in the garage because all of the extra parts take up the space of another car. Not to mention trying to remove the roof on your own can end with scratched paint,

There’s nothing of the most recognizable like cruising around on sunny vehicles on the road today. days with no roof and half Jeep has taken the “if it aint doors. If you haven’t tried it broke, don’t fix it” approach yet I highly recommend it. Sarge Green and I have to say still a very utilitarian feel to it looks fantastic. It’s a great it. There’s a blend of gorgeous throwback to the original leather, big 6.5” touchscreen dark green of the classic army Jeeps of the display and bronze trim contrasting with day. The bronze wheels, bumper and trim the plastic panels, dash and roof. The seats contrast the relatively dark green paint and are a soft brown leather and extremely
comfortable in the front and the rear. The steering wheel is great and the controls are very easy to use. That being said, in my opinion if you are going to go luxury don’t stop half way. The dash and center console is still made of plastic, so is half of the door panels and trim. There isn’t really much of a roof liner and the interior noise is still quite loud. Granted, Jeep did install an epic sound system to make up for it, but you can’t always have your music blasting all of the time. The window controls drove me absolutely bonkers. Jeep placed them right in the middle of the dash between the vents and the buttons are hooked over on a very odd angle. I understand the need to not keep them in the
V6 in 2012 to replace the 3.8L in the previous model years. To be honest, I really miss the 4.0L inline HO 6-cylinder engine from the earlier models. The 3.6 liter has plenty of torque but really lacks horsepower. It really shows when passing or merging on the highway. Anything over 4,000 rpm and the engine seems to fall on its face. Available in both a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, I much prefer the manual. The clutch is fantastic, as there’s lots of feel through the pedal; first gear is a great low gear for climbing. However, I think the transmission is mounted directly to the suspension because if I drove over any bumps or sewer covers the shifter was shaken out of my hand. So violently in fact that I actually crawled underneath to make sure the transmission mounts hadn’t sheared off. The ride was exactly what I expected from Jeep; soft and supple with lots of travel. And just as expected, the body roll was pretty substantial. Emergency lane changes or animal avoidance may result in an upside-down Jeep and a very unhappy Aman. Overall, the 2017 Jeep Wrangler 75th Anniversary is pretty much exactly what I expected. An unreal off roader that compromised luxury for function. Now, I do realize that this may be coming off as
doors in case you remove them, but what was wrong with the classic toggle style switches? Now about that SUV comment, not only does Jeep call the wrangler an
a negative review, it’s anything but. I just wanted to clear the air that the Jeep is an amazing SUV with lots of great features. But if you’re looking for a comfortable
SUV on their website, but a truck has an open compartment in the rear for external storage. Case closed, get over it. Yell at me in the comments. Jeep switched over to the 3.6L Pentastar
vehicle that’s going to spend 95% of its life on the road because it looks cool, maybe drive one before you buy one. For all those off-road enthusiasts out there, this Jeep is exactly what you’re looking for.

‘I wish I had not said ‘no’ so often’
Ahead of her return to acting with a web show, Shamita Shetty says her search for ‘quality screen time’ robbed her of good offers LETTY MARIAM ABRAHAM letty.abraham@mid-day.com IN an industry that runs on family lineage, Shamita Shetty’s inability to make a mark in Bollywood was questioned. Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s younger sister ticked all the checkboxes when it came to the qualities a quintessential Bollywood actor needs — good looks, famous sibling and a dream debut. But, the Yash Raj film, Mohabbatein (2000), failed to propel her to stardom. “The industry is a tough place to be part of,” she says 17 years later. After a short stint as interior designer, Shetty returns to acting with the web show, Yeh Ke Hua Bro, for Voot. Calling this series synonymous to working on her first film, Shetty reflects on her failures and eternal wait for the “right role.” Excerpts from the interview: What prompted you to take up a web series? We are living in a digital age and people are experimenting with interesting scripts [online]. So, it is the right time to be a part of it. Given that there is no censorship online, people can make what they believe is exciting. Yeh Ke Hua Bro is a comic thriller that follows two girls as they make the boys dance to their tunes. I’ve returned to acting after long. It was like working on my first film. Why have you been away from films for so long? It wasn’t a planned sabbatical. I

began my career with the best banner, but made a few mistakes in the successive years. I didn’t want to be part of films just for screen time. Doing good quality roles has always been a priority, but, such offers were limited. The wait for the right role kept getting longer. In the industry, if you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind. When people rarely saw me on screen, they thought I was not interested in acting. I believe luck didn’t favour me. I think I said ‘no’ to too many offers. I wish I hadn’t turned so many down. Did you believe that reality shows Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Bigg Boss would boost your career? I didn’t know what I was getting into while signing up for Bigg Boss. I just wanted to try something new. While the shows taught me a lot, I’m still waiting for something good to come my way. But, the industry is a tough place to be part of. Success doesn’t last forever, and failure changes you. It can bring out the worst in you. What would you call the highpoint of your career? My launch with a YRF film, helmed by Aditya Chopra. Having said that, I think Zeher (2005) changed how people perceived me as an actor. Do you feel burdened being Shilpa Shetty’s sister? Yes! I was not prepared for it initially, but I became immune to the comparison as the years went by. It’s silly to compare two people. We are not alike. Now it doesn’t affect me anymore.
‘Channel has a strategy’ Ghulaam producer says team surprised by decision to axe the daily, but hopes to return with a fresh outing LETTY MARIAM ABRAHAM letty.abraham@mid-day.com GHULAAM had zeroed in on actor Ekta Kaul to headline the thriller, which depicts the pitiful condition of women in Berhampur. The show, which kicked off in January, had come under the spotlight for the apparent tiff between the then lead actors, Vikas Manaktala and Niti Taylor, and Kaul’s entry, it was speculated, would mark the end of the latter’s stint on the show. However, before the inevitable war could spiral beyond control, the channel, Life OK, decided to axe the daily. Co-producer Rahil Qazi says it has little to do with flaring egos. “The channel is set for a revamp,” he says, adding that while the show was originally meant to be part of the new line-up of serials, the channel decided to pull the plug on it. “We were shocked to hear of the developments, but they have a strategy in place and we have to abide by it.” Cast member Param Singh says, “We had done a look test with Ekta and w e r e
Ekta Kaul and producer Rahil Qazi aware of how the show was set to progress,” he says as he questions why a channel would invest in auditioning for a new character and amend the script if they wished to end the show soon. Running a daily means feeding a lot of mouths. While Qazi acknowledges that several workers will lose their jobs, the producers are hopeful that another show from the same team may catch the fancy of the channel. “Apart from the producers, the channel also invests in each show. So, if they’ve decided to discontinue Ghulaam, they’ve thought this through,” Qazi says, adding that the channel is likely to be called Star Bharat.

Khan planning film with Akki? What caught our attention was when Kabir Khan was spotted on the set of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Saturday. The two spent considerable time in the star’s vanity van. Considering what happened to his last release Tubelight, is the filmmaker planning a project with the bankabale Khiladi? Time will tell.
The ‘it’ bag Known for his fixation for highend brands, Karan Johar’s latest airport look has the filmmaker flaunting a limited edition flaming red designer bag. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is in Australia attending the annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2017. As part of the preIndependence Day celebrations over the weekend, she hoisted the tricolour at the the iconic Federation Square. Accompanied by daughter Aaradhya, the two twinned in white. Vol. 8 No. 29 - Saturday - August 19, 2017
Average price of Canadian home sold in July inched down 0.3% to $478,696 in past year The average selling price of a Canadian home has fallen by 0.3 per cent in the past year, the first yearly decline since 2013. The average price of a Canadian home sold on the multiple listing service (MLS) in July was $478,696, the Canadian Real Estate Association said Tuesday. That’s down 0.3 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier, and down five per cent from June, when the average price across the country was $504,458. Stripping out Toronto and Vancouver, the average price nationally was $381,297. That figure is up by five per cent compared to last year, when houses outside Toronto and Vancouver sold for an average of $363,858. Prices were down, but so were sales. The realtor association says there also were 12 per cent fewer sales in July compared to a year ago. “July’s interest rate hike may have motivated some homebuyers with preapproved mortgages to make an offer,” CREA president Andrew Peck said. Ontario makes up a large percentage of Canada’s overall housing market, and rule changes implemented by the provincial government in April aimed at cooling the market appear to have hit the Toronto area hard, with prices and sales figures well below the peak reached that month. “July marked the smallest monthly decline in Greater Golden Horseshoe home sales since Ontario’s Fair Housing Plan was announced in April,” said the realtor group’s chief economist, Gregory Klump. “This suggests sales may be starting to bottom out amid stabilizing housing market sentiment. Time will tell whether that’s indeed the case.” Scotiabank economist Derek Holt agrees that might be possible, as hot activity in Toronto is cooling quickly but from a very high peak. “It is possible that the pace of decline is already abating following much bigger declines ... in each of May and June,” he said. It it happens, it means the unwinding in Toronto’s housing market will follow a remarkably similar path the one that Vancouver took a year ago, when B.C. implemented a 15 per cent foreign buyer’s tax that hit the market

The Jim Pattison Group is developing plans to build a 400-room hotel and indoor waterpark resort in B.C. with potential sites identified in both Surrey and Squamish. “We still need to see if this is a project that will work in Surrey and we’ve publicly pursued a site in Squamish as well, said Michael Lee, vice-president of Jim Pattison Developments.
“Both of those are a possibility. “Jim Pattison Group sees great potential for a resort in B.C. and we are looking at locations all over the province, said Keith Simmonds, vice-president and general manager at Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Ont. He didn’t disclose the other potential locations. JPG owns the franchise rights for Great Wolf Lodge hotels and resorts and currently operates a hotel and 100,000-square-foot waterpark in Niagara Falls. Great Wolf Lodge waterparks are open only to overnight guests of the hotel, not the public. Nonetheless, the City of Surrey is rolling out a red carpet for the development. Mayor Linda Hepner listed fast-tracking the project as a priority in a state-of-the city address in May and hosted a meeting with the resort proponents in July.

According to email correspondence obtained from the city by the Peace Arch News, “Jim Pattison Developments is currently in discussions with (Surrey City Development Corp.) and city staff about plans to develop a 400-room, waterpark-themed family resort in South Surrey. “The resort would bring more than 600 jobs to a South Surrey location, as well as a two-year, $150-million construction, if final approval is given, reads the statement meant to be attributed to Hepner. The site is rumoured to be a property held by the city near 192nd Street and 16th Avenue. Pattison has also pitched Squamish council on an identically sized resort proposed for a site the company owns on Aspen Road, which would require buying some adjacent land. “Pattison Group made a pitch to council about a year ago and they thought (Squamish) was a good location for the resort and they were pretty committed to the area, said Acting Mayor Doug Race. The project would require Pattison to acquire a district road right-of-way and provincial Crown land to complete the parcel, Race said. While the resort would double the number of hotel rooms in Squamish, it would also require hundreds of employees in a town already hit by labour shortages, he said. “Great Wolf Lodge doesn’t really provide much as a public amenity, said Race. “They made it very clear this would not be a place you could drop the kids off for an hour to swim. They operate on a cruise-ship model where they get their guests in and keep them there spending money.

Toronto’s housing market is seeing a massive decline in prices — or is it? Toronto’s existing homes market is seeing a massive decline in prices — or is it? The latest numbers from the Teranet-National Bank Composite House Index look like they tell a different story. The index, released Monday, shows Toronto prices actually rose 2.1 per cent from June to July and national prices were up two per cent from a month earlier. The Toronto results, at first glance, appear out of sync with Toronto Real Estate Board results which show prices have declined almost 21.5 per cent from a peak hit in mid-April before the province put in measures like a foreign buyer tax to cool the market in and around the city. But Marc Pinsonneault, an economist with National Bank, said his index needs to be examined more closely and, as his firm went out of its way to explain in a note, that the index reflects a three-month rolling average, or what it calls a ‘smooth index’. The 2.1 per
increase was an average of May, June and July and therefore not fully reflective of the falling Toronto market. Monday, it also released a so-called unsmoothed index, which offers a better snapshot of July, comparing it to June. The result was 0.3 per cent decline for all dwellings in the Toronto region. “When (the index) was built, people wanted to soften the monthly fluctuations, s a i d Pinsonneault, adding the main index number might not reflect a quickly declining market like Toronto is now seeing. The Teranet-National Bank index also focuses on final sales while TREB initial numbers focus on agreements to purchase – the 30-60 days it might take to close a sale creates a lagging effect. Still, the index results were enough
to convince some that a major correction is coming in Toronto, potentially far beyond what has already been seen. “While homeowners (in Toronto) enjoyed substantial house price gains over the past several years, fuelled mainly by lower interest rates and riskier forms of mortgage lending activity, the recent plunge in resale housing activity over the past three to four months illustrate that a house price correction is already in progress, said David Madani, an economist with Capital Economics which has been predicting a housing crash since 2011, in a note Monday. “Future price declines could potentially erase the majority of the cumulative price gains over the past decade. The Toronto market can also be broken

down even further. While a straight comparison of July to June shows prices down 0.3 per cent, removing condos from the equations increases that decline to 1.6 per cent and reflects the divide in the market. Derek Holt, vice-president and head of capital markets economics of Scotiabank Economics, said summer sales numbers even seasonally annualized are probably a poor way to analyze the market. “How much are we going to attach to this (month)? I think you’ve got to get into six or 12 months of data and a meaningful housing market environment, said Holt. “The sales numbers do show the market (correcting) but I do think in my heart of hearts that it’s going to be a transitory shock (in Toronto) like the one in Vancouver. You will start to rebound.
