The cheque was given to him by Jean Rizzuto (no relation to Montreal members of the mafia of the same name), owner of the Marché 440 and a former Liberal party fundraiser. Continued on Page 6...

Girl living with monkeys in Indian forest primates try to protect her from rescuers Indian police are reviewing reports of missing children to try to identify a girl who was found living in a forest with a group of monkeys. The girl, believed to be 10 to 12 years old, was unable to speak, was wearing no clothes and was emaciated when she discovered in January and taken to a hospital in Bahraich, a town in Uttar Pradesh state in northern India. She behaved like an animal, running on her arms and legs and eating food off the floor with her mouth, said D.K. Singh, chief medical superintendent of the government-run hospital. After treatment, she has begun walking normally and eating with her hands. “She is still not able to speak, but understands whatever you tell her and even smiles,” Singh said. Some woodcutters spotted the girl roaming with monkeys, police officer Dinesh Tripathi said. They alerted police. When they tried to rescue the girl, they were chased away by the
monkeys,” the officer said. She was rescued later by a police officer in the Katarniya Ghat forest range. “When he called the girl, the monkeys attacked him but he was able to rescue the girl. He sped away with her in his police car while the monkeys gave chase,” Tripathi said.

My firing was a deliberate decision by Trump: Preet Bharara Canada was briefed in advance of the U.S. missile strikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical weapon capabilities Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday. Trudeau told the House of Commons during Friday’s morning question period that U.S. Secretary of Defence James Mattis briefed Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan Thursday night and Sajjan “immediately” briefed Trudeau. India-born former top federal prosecutor Preet Bharara has termed his firing by President Donald Trump as "deliberate", saying he does not "begrudge" the decision but wants the "record to be clear." Bharara made his first public appearance on Thursday since being unceremoniously removed by Trump last month as US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Canada’s personal income tax turns 100; small wartime tax has ballooned to 51 per cent of federal revenues By Bryn Weese The Fraser Institute After 100 years of taxing Canadians, the personal income tax, which began as a small wartime revenue generator, has morphed into a costly, complex behemoth that’s difficult to administer and makes Canada very uncompetitive, finds a new collection of essays by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “The fears policymakers had in 1917 when the personal income tax was introduced— that governments would become dependent on it and that it would hurt our competitiveness—have all come true 100 years later,” said William Watson, Associate Professor and Acting Chair of the Department of Economics at McGill University, Fraser Institute senior
fellow and co-editor of The History and Development of Canada’s Personal Income Tax: Zero to 50 in 100 Years.
“Just filing their taxes costs the average Canadian family $500 in time and money, even before they get to what they owe,” Watson added. The book, a collection of essays from some of Canada’s leading tax experts, documents changes to the personal income

tax over the last century. Crucially, Canada’s high personal income tax rates on its best and brightest workers have made the country uncompetitive compared to other developed countries and most American states. For example, a hike to the top federal rate to 33 per cent in 2016 brought Ontario’s combined federal-provincial tax rate to 53.5 per cent, making it the third highest in the G7 behind only France (54.5 per cent) and Japan (55.9 per cent). What’s more, when compared to U.S. states, Canadian provinces have seven of the eight highest top combined rates, with Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Manitoba all over 50 per cent. Even B.C., which has Canada’s lowest combined top rate (47.7 per cent), is still higher than 42 U.S. states. Moreover, Canada’s top personal income tax rates kick in at relatively low levels of income—between $200,000 and $300,000—compared to about 100 100 CAD$550,000 for most U.S. states. Others 95 have even higher thresholds. In New York, 95 for example, the top combined federal and 75 state tax rate of 48.42 per cent only applies 75 to incomes of $1.4 million or higher. “Canada is already uncompetitive with 25 the U.S. on personal income taxes, and 25 with the Trump administration vowing to 5 VICTOR BAINS that gulf will likely reduce taxes further, 5 grow, ” Watson said. 0 0 “When it comes to taxing personal income in Canada, maybe a century is long enough.”

Former Liberal MP says prostate pain made him forget $25,000 he recieved Continued from Page 1... Coderre and Rizzuto initially denied to reporters that the cheque was given, until proof was shown, the Journal reported. Coderre said the cheque was to help him pay legal fees in his lawsuit with hockey player Shane Doan. The two were suing each other after Coderre publically stated Doan should not be allowed to participate in the Olympics because he was accused of making anti-francophone statements during a hockey game in 2005. The lawsuits were settled out of court. Bank records show the cheque was deposited into
Coderre’s personal account on March 2, 2012. Seventeen days later, Coderre gave a personal cheque in the same amount to his law firm, Fasken Martineau, which was handling his legal case with Doan. Coderre said Rizzuto was a friend for more than 30 years who offered to help pay for legal fees because he supported his cause to protect the French language. As a member of the second opposition, Coderre said he had no power to give contracts to Rizzuto. He has not given any contracts to Rizzuto as mayor of Montreal, he said, and thus is not in a conflict of interest.

Trudeau fully supports Trump bombing of Syria Continued from Page 1... The prime minister said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump Friday morning and voiced his support for the air strikes directly. “In face of such heinous war crimes, all civilized peoples must speak with one voice,” Trudeau said. Sajjan later told the House, “Assad’s repeated use of chemical weapons must not continue.” Both Trudeau and Sajjan said the Canadian government will continue to support a diplomatic resolution to the Syrian crisis. In a statement issued Friday morning, interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said the Official Opposition supported “the efforts of the United States to prevent Syria’s military from launching further chemical weapon attacks. “The global community cannot sit idly by while deadly nerve toxins are unleashed on innocent civilians,” the statement said. In the House, Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre criticized the prime minister for what he called inconsistencies in Trudeau’s response to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons. Poilievre said Trudeau’s comments in New York on Thursday that there were “continuing questions” about who exactly was responsible for the attack proves Canada has been “completely out of the loop” on developments in the region. Trudeau said Thursday the UN Security Council should launch an investigation into who was behind the use of the deadly nerve toxins. “Now he says he fully supports the United States’ unilateral missile strikes against the Assad regime. The government’s position
seems to change with the wind,” Poilievre said. There have been phone calls from Mattis and Trump himself since Trudeau made those comments Thursday. “Canada must also step up our efforts on the humanitarian front, particularly in the face of drastic cuts to UN programs planned by the Trump administration,” he said. The United States fired cruise missiles at Syria overnight, in response to this week’s chemical attack that killed more than 80 Syrian civilians in the province of Idlib. The American missile strikes hit a government-controlled airbase in central Syria. U.S. officials say the airbase was the originating point for the plans behind Tuesday’s gas attack. On Wednesday and Thursday, Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland made repeated statements condemning the chemical weapons attack urging the international community to investigate the gas attack to confirm the Assad government was behind it. Freeland said the chemical weapons attack raised “grave questions” about whether the Assad regime could work towards a political solution in Syria. Friday’s statement from Ambrose criticized the Trudeau government for offering “very little in terms of concrete action to hold the Russian-backed government of Syria accountable.” “Contrary to the prime minister’s beliefs, the United Nations Security Council has proven itself woefully ineffectual when it comes to resolving the Syrian conflict,” the Conservative statement said.

My firing was a deliberate decision by Trump Continued from Page 1... Bharara spoke for over an hour to a packed hall, opening up about why he thought he was fired, taking a swipe at Trump’s penchant for firing people as evident in the real estate tycoon’s TV show ‘The Apprentice.’ When asked at the end of the lecture why he was fired, Bharara replied “Beats the hell out of me.” He recalled the meeting held with much “fanfare” between him and then president-elect Trump in the Trump Towers in Manhattan shortly after the presidential elections. He said Trump had then “explicitly” asked him to stay on for another term and that Bharara should tell everyone that Trump wanted him to continue in his position. “Then there was this decision to let everyone go, which I don’t begrudge anyone but I have been around the block a few times. Part of the reason I said I was not going to resign and be fired was because I want the record to reflect for all time that there was a deliberate decision, not just a bureaucratic sweeping away of what had been there in the past, but a specific decision to change one’s mind and deliberately fire me, particularly given what my office’s jurisdiction is and where my office is situated. “I am not making any accusation about anyone but I have lived long enough to know that you want the record to be clear,” the 48-year-old said. He also poked fun at his firing at Trump’s expense, saying asking people politely to submit their resignations is something the President has been good at. “I was asked to resign and I refused. I insisted on being fired and so I was. I really understand why that was such a big deal, especially to this White House. I had thought that was what Donald Trump was good at. I had thought that that is in part how he got to be the President.” “You remember the dramatic moment on The Apprentice every week when Donald Trump sat at the conference room table, manned up, looked the contestant directly in the eye and said in that voice ‘Would you kindly submit your letter of resignation’,” Bharara said amid prolonged laughter from the audience. “I remember that. So I thought he should be comfortable doing what he knew how to do best,” he said. As Bharara began his lecture, he said it has been about three and a half weeks since he was fired and people in the audience must have expected him to be in a “David Letterman-style post employment beard.

Richmond Chinese election ads slam ‘moral destruction’ in East Vancouver A series of inflammatory Chineselanguage election ads — disparaging the LGBT community as part of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside’s “moral destruction” are causing an uproar a month ahead of the May 9 provincial vote. The ads, which can be found in both major Chinese-language newspapers in Vancouver (Ming Pao and Sing Tao Daily), as well as on local Chinese radio, targeted the NDP and Richmond South Centre candidate Chak Au. In the ads, the “Richmond Community Development Concerns Group” said a vote for Au would be supporting the evolution of Richmond into Vancouver’s DTES. “Coun. Chak Au, the provincial NDP’s supporters dominate Vancouver’s Eastside, promoting drug-injection sites, pushing gender-neutral bathrooms, encouraging children to have sex education too early and supporting gay marriage,” said an ad addressed to Au, currently a Richmond city councillor. “Now, Vancouver Eastside is seeing rampant drug use, declining public safety and moral destruction … are you going to help them turn Richmond into (that)?” The group named in the ad isn’t listed among Election B.C.’s registered election advertising sponsors. A call to the group’s number listed in the ad didn’t generate a response. The B.C. Liberals declined to comment (citing policy on any ads not by the party), and the NDP didn’t respond to media requests for a reaction. Andrew Watson, manager of communications for Elections B.C., said there are no rules within the agency on regulating the content of ads like these, especially since the writ hasn’t yet been issued to signal the beginning of campaign season.
“Obviously, there are laws around libel, slander and hate speech, but those are not within our jurisdiction,” Watson said. “It’s not
included in the Elections Act, and our role is to administer that act … During the campaign period, it is the advertising sponsors’ duty to register with us and file a financial report, but the Election Act doesn’t have any rules around the content.” China — along with many places in the Far East — have an uneasy relationship with the LGBT community. While homosexuality is no longer illegal in most non-Muslim jurisdictions, the topic is still taboo throughout the region, and discussions are often pushed to the shadows of mainstream consciousness. The strong social stigma can be seen in recent months in Taiwan — often deemed one of the most liberal societies in Asia — where attempts to legalize same-sex marriage have split public sentiment on the island, where traditional opponents have been equally as vocal as the younger generation of LGBTrights supporters.

Proposed law would allow children to be Canadian citizens separately from parents
100
Tens of thousands of children could benefit from a proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act to allow Canadian residents under the age of 18 to apply on their own for
Canadian citizenship, say advocates. Ontario Senator Victor Oh proposed legislation on Thursday that asks Canada to follow the lead of Norway and make it possible for minors to apply for citizenship separately from their parents. The proposal would apply to a cross-section of youths in Canada — including asylum seekers, children estranged from their parents, young people with criminal convictions, and minors who don’t want to follow their parents back to nations such as India and China that don’t allow dual passports. Canadian law currently requires permanent residents who want to apply for citizenship to be at least 18 years of age or to be included in a parent or guardian’s immigration application. That “places some highly vulnerable minors at risk of removal once they become adults, says a brief prepared by the senators.
A change in the citizenship law could have 95 significant consequences for thousands of young people in Ontario and B.C., where three 75 100 out of 10 residents are foreign-born. In addition, the senators’ amendment 95 is a response to the growing number of 25 75 unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in Canada, which rose by more than 50 per cent 5 to 3,400 in 2016. Senator Ho’s motion, which has been 0 25 supported by B.C. Senator Mobina Jaffer, echoes similar recommendations made last 5 year to an Ottawa citizenship committee by Vancouver East NDP MP Jenny Kwan and 0 Winnipeg Conservative MP Michelle Rempel. “This would be the biggest push forward for children’s rights in Canada in decades, said Vancouver immigration lawyer Richard Kurland, who helped the senators draft the proposal. Currently, the only way that a Canadian resident under 18 can apply for citizenship on their own is on “compassionate grounds. But that avenue is rarely used. In contrast, Norway allows citizenship applications from youth who have been in the country for five of the previous seven years. Denmark is open to youths becoming immigrants on their own if they have gone to school in the country for four years. The background paper accompanying the complex legislative proposal said it would make it possible for the following kinds of young people to become Canadian citizens through their own application process:

In final submissions Thursday, a lawyer for Akintoye — who since the confrontation has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and posttraumatic stress disorder — told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Margot Fleming that his client was entitled to $475,000 for past and future wage loss. Neil Chantler argued that his client suffered “serious and lasting injuries from the incident and deserves an award of general damages of $60,000 to $80,000. He also called for $25,000 in aggravated damages and another $25,000 for punitive damages.

Lawyers for a Surrey man who alleges he was assaulted by Vancouver police officers in a case of mistaken identity are seeking a substantial damages award for their client. Solomon Akintoye, 33, claims he was punched and kicked after being stopped by Const. Jennifer White and Const. Jeremiah Birnbaum while he was walking to a job interview in downtown Vancouver on April 18, 2011. Lawyers for the City of Vancouver, defending, deny that the police officers attacked Akintoye and say they acted lawfully and reasonably.

Ottawa seeks high-level meeting to discuss Toronto’s soaring house prices Concerned about ballooning house prices in Toronto, federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau wants a high-level meeting with Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa and Toronto Mayor John Tory in the coming weeks to look at possible remedies to ease the costs of home ownership, the Star has learned. Morneau wrote Sousa and Tory separately Wednesday asking to meet soon to “consider how we can collectively make progress to ensure that housing in the GTA is both affordable and accessible for the long term. “I am concerned that dramatic house price increases will have long-term implications for housing affordability and housing market stability,” Morneau wrote in his letters, which were obtained by the Star. “I believe we must take a closer look at these evolving market conditions and take stock of (the) implications for our largest urban area,” the finance minister said. Morneau’s appeal for a political tête-àtête comes at a time when all three levels of government are grappling with how best to address concerns that the red-hot market is leaving frustrated families priced out of home ownership. Morneau, who represents the downtown riding of Toronto Centre, notes that both Sousa and Tory share his “growing concerns about access to affordable housing” across the region. In his letter, Morneau said he’s also worried that some families, encouraged by low interest rates, have taken on high debt loads to get into the housing market, “making them susceptible to changing economic conditions.
“As prices have risen, middle-class Canadians have become increasingly worried about being able to afford a home for their families,” he said.
Morneau cited the recent housing market assessment prepared by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation that found “problematic conditions” in the Greater Toronto Area. Over a 12-month period, house prices across the GTA have seen double-digit percentage increases, the assessment said. “Due to a high number of sales and a relatively stable number of new listings over the past year, there were more buyers chasing the same number of listings, which resulted in sale prices often exceeding list prices,” the report said. And while the number of listings was up in March, competition among buyers has remained stiff. The average home price in Greater Toronto was $916,567 in March, up $228,556 from the same period a year earlier, according to the Toronto Real Estate Board. Political leaders have been casting around for possible remedies.
WSO welcomes passing of 1984 Sikh genocide motion in Ontario The World Sikh Organization of Canada welcomes the passing of Private Members’ Motion 46 tabled by Ontario Liberal MPP Harinder Malhi recognizing the 1984 Sikh Genocide. The motion was passed by a vote of 34 to 5. Ms. Malhi’s motion read, “That, in the opinion of this House, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, should reaffirm our commitment to the values we cherish justice, human rights and fairness - and condemn all forms of communal violence, hatred, hostility, Racism and intolerance in India and anywhere else in the world, including the 1984 Genocide perpetrated against the Sikhs throughout India, and call on all sides to embrace truth, justice and reconciliation.” The passing of Ms. Malhi’s motion follows a similar attempt last year to recognize the Sikh Genocide in the Ontario Legislature. In June 2016, NDP Deputy-Leader Jagmeet Singh introduced a Private Members’ Motion recognizing the November 1984 state organized violence perpetrated against the Sikhs throughout India as a genocide. Jagmeet Singh’s motion was defeated, despite receiving support from both the NDP and Progressive Conservative caucuses. The 1984 Sikh Genocide, in which thousands of innocent Sikh men, women and children were brutally attacked and murdered across India, was one of the darkest chapters in modern Indian history. The attacks were not spontaneous but had in fact been systematically orchestrated and carried out under the guidance of members of the ruling Congress Party of India. State actors like the police either turned a blind
eye to the killings or actively assisted in their execution. The Government of India’s Nanavati Commission Report acknowledges “but for the backing and help of influential and resourceful persons, killing of Sikhs so swiftly and in large numbers could not have happened.” Although official reports record the killings of nearly 3,000 Sikhs, unofficial estimates are much higher. Barbara Crossette, a former New York Times bureau chief in New Delhi noted that “Almost as many Sikhs died in a few days in India in 1984 than all the deaths and disappearances in Chile during the 17year military rule of Gen. Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990,” Indian Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has recognized the 1984 attacks on Sikhs as a “genocide” and noted that several persons who had a role in the carnage are yet to be punished. WSO President Mukhbir Singh said today, “we welcome the passing of Ms. Malhi’s motion recognizing the 1984 Sikh Genocide and are thankful for the support it received from the Ontario Legislature. We also recognize the important work of Jagmeet Singh for having first raised this matter in the Ontario Legislature last year. For years, the term ‘1984 anti-Sikh riots’ was used to describe the events of November 1984 which was a distortion and wrongly implied unorganized communal violence. Recognizing the state-sponsored violence that targeted Sikhs across India in 1984 is an important and historic step towards justice, accountability and reconciliation which we hope will be an example to other governments.”

M to id second suspect in urrey break in South Asian man arrested as first suspect
Surrey RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the last remaining suspect in a residential break and enter captured on surveillance cameras after the other suspect was arrested and charged. On April 20, 2016 at 11:30am, two suspects, a male and female, attended a residence in the 10000 block of 127A Street in Surrey. The female knocked and unsuspecting occupants opened the door. The male suspect then forced his way into the home and threatened the occupants with a weapon. The male and female suspects fled in a silver Volkswagen Beetle after robbing the occupants. No one was physically harmed during the incident. The male suspect has been identified as Mohammed Khan, 40 years old, from Delta. Khan has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and break and enter. Khan is
currently in custody. The outstanding female suspect is described as a fair-skinned Caucasian woman, 25-35 years old, with a medium build and shoulder length, brown, curly/frizzy hair. She was wearing a grey tank top, denim jeans with a large hole torn in the left knee and pointed flaps covering the back pockets, and distinctive off-white and tan coloured boots with 1/2 inch raised heels. “If you know this woman, please contact the Surrey RCMP,” says Corporal Scotty Schumann. “The police rely on cooperation and information from the public and together we can make the community a safer place.” For more information on home security, please visit the Surrey RCMP’s website. 5 in Maple Ridge area charged with selling fentanyl Ridge Meadows RCMP say a months-long investigation has resulted in charges against five people — three men and two women — for selling fentanyl. The RCMP said in a release that the four-month investigation, which began in November 2016, targeted street-level dealing. They say the investigation relied on an analysis of street-level drug and property crime trends. “The investigation and subsequent charges against these individuals
sends a clear message this won’t be tolerated in our community,” said Sgt. Mitch Fox in charge of Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit. Police have charged Dylan Jay Friesen, 36, Cameron Zachary Cater, 22, Joseph Grant Bardonnex, 36, Zoe Diana Elizabeth Dore, 20, and Bobbi Passmore, 34. All five were charged with one or more counts of trafficking in a controlled substance and all five are from the Maple Ridge area.
Man charged with three counts of first degree murder after women killed in Quebec shooting A man who ranted about his family, claiming they lacked generosity because they cut off his free room and board, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after a shooting rampage that left three women dead in a pair of quiet Quebec villages. Neighbours said he moved in with Ms. Halle and his brother, Jocelyn Duquette, last fall after he fell on hard times and had trouble holding down a job. His brother was diagnosed with leukemia shortly thereafter and died Dec. 1. Ms. Halle later told neighbours she no longer wanted to live with Mr. Duquette and asked him to leave by April 1. “He lived there and she didn’t want him there,” said Michel Grenier, a neighbour and family friend of the victims. “He was very upset about it.” One day before his eviction date, Mr. Duquette took to Facebook to express his displeasure.

the deadly attacks that left villagers shaken in the central Quebec region near La Mauricie National Park. The dead are Jocelyne Pellerin, 70, identified by friends and family as the suspect’s stepmother; Denise Halle, 56, his sister-in-law; and Janet Toupin-Lauzon, 61, a friend of Ms. Halle’s who was visiting from Prescott, Ont., and was accompanied by her three-year-old grandson, who was unharmed. The boy’s parents retrieved him Thursday, according to family. The suspect’s 80-year-old father, Claude Duquette, was present during the attack on Ms. Pellerin but escaped without serious injury, according to the Sûreté du Québec. The gunman tried to torch the homes where the attacks took place, and black soot ringed the windows of one of the homes. Sylvain Duquette also faces charges of arson and kidnapping.

Canadians undergo more than a million medical tests and treatments every year that 95 they may not need, according to a new report that 75 reveals big variations in the ordering of some procedures. The study puts a spotlight on unnecessary medical care 25 that ranges from MRI scans for run-of-the-mill back pain 5 to preoperative tests for lowrisk colonoscopy patients 0 and the over-prescribing of some drugs for seniors and children. Published Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the report is part of a national effort to cut waste in the healthcare system and prevent the harm to patients that can sometimes flow from superfluous care. Wendy Levinson, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, launched the Canadian incarnation of the campaign in1002014. Dubbed Choosing Wisely, it was modelled on a program that aimed to reduce unnecessary care in the United States, where 95 a 2012 report from the influential Institute of75Medicine (IOM) found the health-care system squandered about $750-billion a year, much of it on procedures patients did not need. 25 “I thought at the beginning, when we started Choosing Wisely [Canada], that 5 we would not have the same degree of unnecessary care in Canada because we 0 don’t have the same motivators as the U.S., Dr. Levinson said. “I think [this report] tells
us this is an issue in Canada. But unlike the IOM report, the Canadian study avoids talking about dollars and cents. Clinicians can become “jaded and cynical if a program smacks of rationing,
said Donna McRitchie, a surgeon and the vice-president of medical and academic affairs at North York General Hospital in Toronto, one of the first hospitals to embrace the Choosing Wisely approach. “People just sort of roll their eyes and say: ‘Oh, it’s just administration trying to save money,’ “ Dr. McRitchie said. “So we purposely don’t really talk about money. Instead, the Canadian report looks at how parts of the country are faring on eight of the more than 200 recommendations for curbing waste in medical care that Choosing Wisely has developed in co-operation with doctors and patients. Many of the statistics date from before the debut of the campaign and will be used as a baseline against which to measure its success.

Yahoo hacker questioned about luxury cars and home at bail hearing The finances of a young Hamilton man accused in the United States of a massive hacking conspiracy that compromised Yahoo and Google email accounts came under scrutiny at his bail hearing Wednesday. Karim Baratov, 22, took the stand to testify on his own behalf in a Hamilton courtroom, speaking calmly and evenly about earning
large amounts of money from a young age through online services. He had shuffled into court with his legs in shackles, accompanied by a guard. He wore a black V-neck T-shirt and pyjama bottoms. His elaborate sleeve tattoo, which he liked to
show off on Instagram, was clearly visible. One of his two lawyers, Amedeo DiCarlo, passed him a grey suit jacket to put on before the judge arrived. Baratov started earning money when he was 12 or 13. In 2013, he incorporated his own business for renting out computer server space for people’s websites. He also was a consultant for helping people protect their web servers from hacking and other cyber attacks, he said. Baratov said he even filed tax returns starting in 2014, claiming about $90,000 in income. His income dipped in 2015 and 2016, he said, to around $60,000. He declared the money as “business income” for “online services,” he told the court. Baratov said he bought his large suburban home in Hamilton and moved into it on his own in 2015, putting a $128,000 down payment on 100 the $642,000 dwelling. About half the money 95 his own; the remainder was his parents’, was he75said. The house was put on the market just before his arrest and sold soon after for $850,000. The 25 left him about $250,000 in equity, he said. sale

BC government misled public after 20 2 ealth Ministry firings 0
In the fall of 2013, a year after B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s government made a public show of firing eight health researchers over a data breach, bureaucrats knew their case against the workers had fallen apart. It took until Thursday, and the release of a critical Ombudsperson report on the firings, before the head of the provincial public service offered an “unqualified and comprehensive” apology. The apology, which was delivered at a news conference by Kim Henderson, deputy minister to the Premier, extends to the family of Roderick MacIsaac, a student researcher who killed himself after enduring “badgering” interrogations by government investigators, and then being fired just two days before the end of his student co-op term. Ms. Henderson said the province accepts all the recommendations in Ombudsperson Jay Chalke’s report, including a proposal to establish a $500,000 university scholarship in Mr. MacIsaac’s name. In his report, Mr. Chalke concluded that the firings were driven by a flawed and needlessly
rushed investigative process prompted by a whistle-blower’s complaints. He found there

was no political interference in the decision to fire the researchers, but Mr. Chalke said the government misled the public about RCMP 100 involvement, and then bungled the fallout as 95 it slowly retreated from its initial allegations of 75wrongdoing. The 500-page report, titled Misfire, says the decision to fire the health researchers was made by then-deputy health 25 minister Graham Whitmarsh. It was only after Mr. Whitmarsh left government that 5 the new deputy minister of health, Stephen 0 Brown, called off the investigation.

Protesters crash groundbreaking for bridge to replace Massey Tunnel A pre-election photo op to “celebrate” the start of construction on the $3.5-billion bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel did not go as planned for B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone on Wednesday.
The event, featuring local politicians and other supporters of the megaproject, was supposed to be held outside, with a backhoe ready to break ground. However, Stone was delayed — by traffic in the Massey Tunnel, he said — and protesters with placards and megaphones took the stage instead, pretending to be Stone handing over a “blank cheque” to Port Metro Vancouver. “It’s illogical. It’s basically a monument to the car,” said Richmond city councillor Carol Day, who was among the protesters. “It’s a major taxpayer waste of money.” The event, which included Stone, Delta

Mayor Lois Jackson and others, moved quickly inside a nearby fire hall. Stone told reporters there is widespread public support for the new 10-lane bridge to replace the aging tunnel connecting Richmond to Delta. “We respect [the protesters’] rights to make those views known,” said Stone. Metro Vancouver mayors reject replacement of Massey Tunnel with 10lane bridge “That said, we also have an obligation to do what we believe is in the best interests of British Columbians,” calling the bridge a “critical piece of infrastructure.” The minister says it has taken four years of consultation with First Nations, municipal and regional governments and a tremendous amount of technical work to get to the point where construction can now begin. Stone said protesters are entitled to present their opinion during the May 9 election. Opposition to the bridge goes beyond the dozens of protesters gathered Wednesday morning. Metro Vancouver mayors spoke out collectively against the project last summer, saying the bridge was “car-oriented” and diverting money from public transit and other transportation priorities.
Christine Girard struggles to describe her emotions after getting the news that she will likely, and finally, be crowned Olympic champion after two weightlifters who finished ahead of her at the 2012 London Olympics were officially disqualified for doping. “It’s exciting,” she conceded, “because it’s finally going to happen.” “But it’s interesting too.” Both gold medalist Maiya Maneza of Kazakhstan and Russian silver medalist Svetlana Tzarukaeva have now been stripped of their medals, bumping Girard up from bronze to top spot almost five years after they all went head-to-head in the 63 kilogram class in London. “Until recently, I thought the bronze medal ceremony in London was one of the best moments of my life. But it can’t be anymore,” said Girard from her White Rock home. The 37-year-old is also awaiting confirmation that her fourth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be upgraded to a bronze medal pending another doping disqualification of a different Kazakh lifter. She says it’s impossible to quantify how much she lost as a result of being cheated out
of the medals. “I’m not a material girl but I think about how my life would have been different. From
fourth place to a medal [in Beijing] is huge. Those four years leading up to London, I would have had so much more support. I mean, I was training in a carport that was barely heated.” “In Beijing, I would have been the first medal for Canada. I think we had our first medal on day seven and I had competed on day four. It would have been huge for me and my sport.” “And even now as a coach, my name would have been so much better known,” she said. “When I think about it, I get a little upset.” Girard says she keeps her bronze medal from London somewhere in a closet.
6 people in hospital after SUV crashes into BC library RCMP in Peachland in BC say six people have been taken to hospital, one of them with life-threatening injuries, after an SUV crashed into a public library Wednesday afternoon. In a media release, police said the BMW drove through the front wall of the Okanagan Regional Library. Witnesses told officers the vehicle had been in the parking lot when it “suddenly drove over the curb and onto the pedestrian
walkway before it crashed through the wall,” according to the release. Five people were inside the library where the vehicle broke through; some were struck by the SUV while others were hit by debris. One 56-year-old man, who was “directly in the path” of the BMW, taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. RCMP said he underwent emergency surgery overnight and was believed to be in serious but stable condition on Thursday.
The remaining five people were all women ranging in age from 65 to 71. They were all treated for “various” injuries and have since been discharged from hospital. The driver, a 71-year-old woman, was taken to hospital as a precaution. Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said there is currently no clear cause for the crash. Witnesses are asked to contact West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.

If sunny days make you happy, March was not the month for you, Vancouver. It was the “gloomiest” March in Vancouver since record-keeping began in 1951, with only 70.5 total hours of sunshine in the entire month, according to Environment Canada. On average, Vancouver gets 138.4 hours of bright sunshine in March — or nearly twice the paltry figure we endured last month. “March was a really hard month here on the coast ... especially on the heels of this winter,” said meteorologist Matt MacDonald. “People were looking forward to March and it didn’t offer much reprieve.” It also rained 28 out of the 31 days, tying the previous record for most days with rain. What about April? April started with sun last weekend, and “always fares better than March,” said MacDonald, but the next week looks “unsettled.” “We’ve got a number of systems lined up one after the other, potentially a bit of a windy storm on Friday,” he said.

RCMP acknowledges using phone trackers to collect Canadians’ cellular details The RCMP used controversial spy technology to track cellphone data in 19 criminal investigations last year — the first official public acknowledgement that the force uses surreptitious devices to collect Canadians’ cellular details.
In a rare briefing with reporters from the Toronto Star, CBC and the Globe and Mail Wednesday morning, RCMP Chief Superintendent Jeff Adam said his force owns 10 so-called “mobile device identifier” (MDI) devices with the ability to gather high-level data about the phone’s location — but not private communications. “We will confirm officially that the RCMP possesses and uses mobile identifier

technology in order to identify and locate a suspect in a criminal investigation,” he said. “This capability can be used to further criminal investigations relating to national security, serious organized crime and other serious Criminal Code offences that impact the safety and security of Canadians.” Calling the technology a “very important investigative tool for us,” Adam said the devices identify a suspect’s cellphone by gathering “very limited” signalling information in a given vicinity and collecting unique identification information from the phone — called International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers (IMEI). “What the RCMP technology does not do is collect private communications,” said Adam. That includes voice and audio communications, email messages, text messages, contact lists, images, encryption keys or basic subscriber information, he said. While MDI technology does allow for the collection of personal communications, the RCMP uses equipment that — by policy — does not capture private communications, said Adam. He would not identify the specific model of MDI device the RCMP uses.
RCMP arrest Toronto man for leaving to join ISIS The RCMP have arrested and charged a Toronto man for allegedly leaving the country to join ISIS. Pamir Hakimzadah, 27, was taken into custody as part of a national criminal investigation, Project Sachet, which began in January 2016. According to the RCMP, Hakimzadah allegedly travelled to Turkey in the fall of 2014 with the intention of joining ISIS and participating in terrorist activity. He was returned to Canada after being

detained by Turkish authorities. Hakimzadah is expected to appear in court Thursday. The RCMP said they worked with the Toronto Police Service on the investigation. The Mounties say there was no risk to public safety, but are asking citizens to “remain vigilant” and report any information they may have on terrorism or suspicious activity to the National Security Information Network at 1-800-420-5805.
Abderrahmane Ghanem, a 30-year-old Canadian from Calgary, has been held for nearly a year in the El-Harrach prison in Algeria. Ghanem, who also holds Algerian citizenship, is charged with being a member of a terrorist group outside Algeria. His trial is set to begin next month. If found guilty he likely faces up to 20 years in jail. His family and lawyers are speaking out and said they believe the charge has to do with Ghanem’s past association with people who have been radicalized in Calgary and went to fight for extremist groups in the Middle East. Gary Caroline, a Vancouver lawyer retained by Ghanem’s father Mohamed, says he believes Canada’s security agency shared critical information with Algeria that resulted
in Ghanem’s detention. Omar Alghabra, Canada’s parliamentary
secretary for consular affairs, says he “has seen no evidence of that.” He declined a request for an interview, but provided the following statement: “Our officials have been active on his case and are engaged with the Algerian authorities to ensure that his well-being and rights are protected. We are also engaged with his Canadian legal team.”

Edmonton couple wins $8M in third lottery win Talk about being lucky — an Edmonton couple is celebrating another lottery win. Barbara and Douglas Fink won $8,163,061.10 on the Feb. 22 Lotto 6/49 draw. Barbara checked the winning numbers on the Internet the night of the draw and she called Douglas, who was working out of town, right way. She couldn’t reach him, but when she did, she told him, “I did it again.” The Finks have won on the lottery before — Douglas shared in a $128,000 Lotto 6/49 win with four of his friends in 1989. In 2010, the couple won $100,000.
“I knew we had all the numbers, but I didn’t know how many winners there were,” Barbara said. “I called Douglas back before midnight and told him it was more than $8 million.” The couple says they will use the money to ensure their daughters and grandkids are looked after. They also say they want to continue to travel and will start looking for a new home. “Barbara wants a new house, so she’ll get one,” Douglas said. The winning ticket was a free play won on a previous draw. A ticket sold in Ontario won the other half of the $16.3-million jackpot.
PharmaNet privacy investigation reveals new information Government has learned new information about the PharmaNet privacy incidents as a result of the investigative work jointly undertaken by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and the ministries of Health, Finance, and Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services. The breaches are alleged to be a result of cybercrime, which targeted physicians’ and medical clinic offices, and PharmaNet service vendors. It is suspected that access was obtained through impersonation of physicians and other methods. On March 23, 2017, the VPD made an arrest in the case. However, no charges have been laid at this time. The VPD confirmed that the information accessed from PharmaNet, was, in some instances, used for fraudulent purposes. Government continues to work with the VPD to support the investigation. To ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation, government is unable to share any further details at this time. The investigation has identified approximately 13,000 new individuals who may have had their PharmaNet profile and/ or medication history viewed inappropriately. This is in addition to the approximately 7,500 that were identified earlier this year. In order to mitigate the risk of fraud and identity theft, government is offering credit monitoring at no cost to all affected individuals. The Ministry of Health is contacting all affected individuals by letter to inform them
of the incidents and provide instructions on how to access credit monitoring. Individuals are encouraged to wait for a letter, rather than calling Health Insurance BC. As the investigation is ongoing, additional exposures may become known; in that case, government will complete additional notifications as necessary. The ministries of Health, Finance, and Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services have undertaken a significant amount of work since discovering these incidents. These actions include containing all known PharmaNet incidents, shutting down affected accounts, and disabling accounts that have been inactive for more than 30 days. The Ministry of Health is implementing more robust security measures with PharmaNet vendors and is installing cautionary banners that stress the legislative requirements for using PharmaNet upon signing in. A letter was sent to health-care practitioners affected by the breach, advising them of the issue and security measures they can take to prevent unauthorized access. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has been notified of all incidents and regular updates are being provided to that office. Protection of government data and networks is a top priority for the B.C. government, especially where it concerns British Columbians’ personal information.
M arrest leader of anti pedophile vigilante group ‘Surrey Creep Catchers’ The president of the vigilante group Surrey Creep Catchers says he was arrested Monday night following a confrontation with a man the organization’s members accused of being a pedophile. The group targets people they allege are child sexual predators by posing as minors online, arranging to meet their targets and filming the encounters, which are then published on the Internet. Ryan LaForge, president of the group, posted a Facebook Live video late Monday saying he was “arrested and charged for assault” after conducting a “citizen’s arrest” of a target. LaForge could not be reached for comment. Asked about LaForge’s comments on Facebook in connection to the arrest, Surrey RCMP says its officers received reports of alleged child luring and assault on
Monday night, but it would not confirm the names of anyone involved. The RCMP say one person was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court at a later date. The Mounties say the incident remained under investigation and no charges were laid. In the statement, police say they do not condone vigilantism because of the safety risks for those involved. “Vigilantism, no matter how well meaning, does not involve police, and therefore is void of ongoing safety considerations,” Cpl. Scotty Schumann said. “Vigilantism is a risk to the safety of all those involved including victims, or potential victims, the alleged suspects, and/or the safety of those persons intent on broadcasting the suspected crime.”
obin ood our recall e pands nationwide over possible E. coli concerns Concerns about people getting ill from possible E. coli contamination have triggered a national food recall warning about a popular brand of flour. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says 10,000, 10-kilogram bags of Robin Hood Original All Purpose Flour are being recalled by Smucker Foods of Canada. “The risk is defined high enough that we want to make sure that consumers are aware of it,” Fred Jamieson, a CFIA food safety recall specialist, said Wednesday. “We don’t want them to continue consuming the product. We want them to throw it out or take it back to retail and to encourage people if they aren’t feeling well to seek medical aid.” The Public Health Agency of Canada says
an outbreak of E. coli O121 has been linked to the flour. The recall applies to flour with a best before date of April 17, 2018 (2018 AL 17) and the production code 6 291 548. The agency says there have been 26 cases of people being infected with this kind of E. coli bacteria in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador. No deaths have been reported, but at least six people required hospital care. The agency says the investigation is ongoing and there could be additional products linked to the outbreak. Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make people sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. The bacteria can be found in the lower intestines of animals and people. Jamieson said all of the bags of flour that haven’t been sold are now off store shelves, but it is not clear how many are in the hands of consumers. The shelf life of a bag of flour can be up to 18 months. Maribeth Burns, a spokeswoman for the J.M. Smucker Company, said the flour was produced at a mill in Saskatoon. Burns said consumers should note public health warnings not to taste raw dough or batter and that eating a small amount could make people sick. Consumers are also being told to use hot water and soap to wash any bowls, utensils, or surfaces that flour was used on and to wash their hands after handling flour. “We can assure you that consumer safety and product quality are of paramount importance to our company,” Burns said in an email from the company’s office in Ohio. “As such, we have been working closely with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on this limited recall on one production code of flour.”

Importance of National Advance Care Planning Day
Republic Day of Pakistan was celebrated at the residence of Consul General of Pakistan in Vancouver on Thursday, March 23. Pictured above is Deputy Consul Fahad Amjad (left) at reception.
By Pat Porterfield and Jas Cheema Imagine you have a serious illness and need to make difficult decisions about your care. Would you feel prepared to make those decisions? Across Canada, April 16 is National Advance Care Planning Day. It’s an invitation to consider your thoughts and ideas about your future health care. My friend Barbara recently died of cancer. While her death is sad, I am comforted knowing she was able to be at home with her husband and daughter until three days before she died, and then died peacefully in hospice with her family at her side. This is what she wished her death to be like, but it took planning on her part to achieve. Everyone has a community of care. It’s made up of the people we help, and the people we depend on for help. But if you became ill and couldn’t speak for yourself, would your community know your wishes? Do they know who
would speak for you? Lots of people think about their future health care; a recent poll indicated that 79 per cent of adults in British Columbia have thought about who would make healthcare decisions for them if needed. But they don’t always know that this thinking is called advance care planning. Advance care planning supports you in understanding and sharing your thoughts about: • what matters most to you; • who makes health-care decisions for you if you cannot; • what health care treatments you would or would not want. Advance care planning helps others make difficult decisions for you, if needed, because: • they are more likely to know what you want; • it helps them speak for you to ensure you get the care that is right for you; • it reduces their worry and anxiety about making the wrong decision. That is why advance care planning is important. Knowing and talking about your values, beliefs and wishes as they relate to health care will help you get the care that’s right for you. It prepares you for health-care decision making, and for any situation in which you can’t speak for yourself, which may happen at any point in our lives, but commonly happen when we have a serious illness that may lead to our death. Barbara was able to get the care that was right for her because she did her advance care planning. She worked with her health-care team to write down what treatments she wanted and what treatments she didn’t want as she approached the end of her life. She lived in another city, and when she came for her last visit with me a few months before her death, she brought her written information and shared her wishes with me in case something happened suddenly while she was visiting. For example, she had a form that stated she did not want cardiopulmonary resuscitation (commonly known as CPR), which was important for me to know. Barbara and her family had peace of mind knowing she had these plans in place. So did I. Resources about Advance Care Planning can be found at www.bc-cpc.ca .
ttawa s two year tab to host visiting leaders
The federal government has spent $2.8 million over the past two years to host visiting kings, queens, presidents, premiers and other VIPs, the National Post has learned. The most expensive visit in the calendar years 2015 and 2016 was by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi visited Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver April 1416, 2015, while Stephen Harper was prime minister, and Canada spent $491,000 hosting the Indian PM and his delegation. The second most expensive red carpet to be rolled out was the working visit by Mexico’s head of state, President Enrique Pena Nieto. That visit, last June after Justin Trudeau was elected prime minister, cost the treasury $407,000. U.S. president Barack Obama’s one-day visit to Ottawa last June left his Trudeau government hosts with a $99,000 bill.

The plight of Christians in Pakistan: A tutorial for Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Canada By Tarak Fateh Pakistan is a multi-cultural, progressive and democratic country in which there is no place for religious tyranny.”Believe it or not, someone out there believes we Canadians will buy this piffle. This fairy-tale description of Pakistan came in a “Letter to the Editor” to the Sun published March 15 from the “Minister Press”
at the Pakistani High Commission in Canada, Nadeem Haider Kiani.Kiani was responding to my March 8 critique of the supposed antiIslamophobia motion, M-103, tabled in the House of Commons by Mississauga Liberal MP Iqra Khalid. He wrote: “People belonging to all faiths including Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and Ahmadis are living with complete freedom of worship. No one has been subjected to persecution on the basis of religion, race, or sect.”Coincidentally, the timing of the Pakistani diplomat’s letter defending Islamabad’s treatment of Christians and Hindus overlapped with an event at the United Nations Human Rights Council
(UNHRC) in Geneva. There, two Pakistani Canadian Christians, retired officers of the Pakistan military, addressed a UNHRC event on March 16, highlighting the persecution of Pakistani Christians.Rev. James Luke of the Lutheran church, a retired group captain of the Pakistan Air Force, tore into Islamabad’s horrific human rights record concerning the indigenous Christians of Pakistan. He said they have been marginalized from mainstream Muslim society in apartheidlike social segregation. Chatting at a street side café in Geneva, Luke told me many, “Muslim Pakistani Canadians demand Motion M103 to stop Islamophobia, but many of them have no problem holding Christians in contempt in their own backyards.”At the UNHRC session, moderated by former Canadian Liberal MP Mario Silva, Luke recounted many acts of mob violence by Muslims against Christians who are accused of Islamophobia. “Is this where Canada is headed after M103 is adopted by the House of Commons?” he asked with a sad smile on his face. He highlighted the February 6, 1997 attack by 30,000 Muslims on the Christian village of Shanti Nagar (Peace Town). Waving placards that read “Kill Christians” the jihadis destroyed 750 homes and four churches. Another Pakistani-Canadian Christian who spoke at the UNHRC event was Jawaid Bakhsh, a retired major of the Pakistan army. He spoke at length about the social ostracization of Pakistan’s indigenous
Christian community by the majority of Pakistani Muslims.“Today across the Islamic world, Christians are marked for annihilation and Christian blood is shed by the sword with impunity,” he stated. In a separate event leading up to the spring session of the UNHRC, the Pakistani Christian Association, a group of exiles based in Brussels, plastered the city with signs highlighting their plight under Islamic rule. “Christians in Pakistan under Threat” read the bilingual signs on billboards and streetcars inviting
people to attend a two-day event that began on Monday. If Pakistani diplomats in Canada wish to brush up Islamabad’s tarnished image as a country that reportedly gave sanctuary to Osama Bin Laden, they should work towards the immediate release of Asia Bibi and Dr. Shakil Afridi, the physician whose hard work led to Bin Laden’s demise. Writing letters to the editor based on falsehoods will only validate Canadians’ perception that Islamabad is an edifice of deception exporting extremism and terrorism.

Ottawa man hated paying tax so much that he killed a judge and two others Ian Bush kept a rambling, handwritten journal about his deep hatred for the tax man. He also kept a toolkit for murder. Enraged over a bitter tax feud, the Ottawa consultant targeted a retired tax court judge in a murder plot he executed on the morning of June 29, 2007, allegedly hog-tying the elderly
judge, his wife and friend, then beating them and suffocating them to death with plastic bags in their Riverside Drive condo. In opening statements at Ian Bush’s triple murder trial on Wednesday, Assistant Crown Attorney Tim Wightman revealed the police theory to the jury, saying the accused’s “focal point of rage” was Alban Garon, a retired chief justice of Canada’s tax court. Garon, 77, was found with a plastic bag over his head, and a hangman’s noose around his neck. He had been beaten about the head. The judge, his wife Raymonde, also 77, and their friend Marie-Claire Beniskos, 78, were found in a pool of blood on the living-room floor the day after the killings when a worried relative
knocked, and opened the unlocked door to Unit 1002 in the high security building. The jury — 11 men, one woman — heard that Ottawa police found DNA evidence at the crime scene that they matched to Bush years later. Bush took notes and sat confidently in the prisoner’s box on the first day of his trial on three counts of first-degree murder. After linking Bush to the killings in 2015, police searched his home and seized a toolkit for murder, which included ducttape, rubber gloves, a sawed-off rifle, ammunition, and plastic bags (the ones with suffocation warnings). Ottawa police also found his handwritten journal, anchored in the ramblings of a man who wrote that tax collectors were the “lowest form of humanity” and likened them to extortionists. The jury also heard about an “arrogant and insulting” letter that Bush, now 61, sent to the retired judge, in which he summoned him to his home for a bizarre hearing. In one of his writings, titled “Process,” the accused triple killer lists what appears to be all the usual ingredients for crime — from gaining access, to securing “parties, cash, plus credit cards and pins, assets,” right down to leaving his “calling card.” Bush also kept several bogus identification cards in a wallet, including an RCMP inspector’s ID, a hydro worker’s ID, a federal government ID card and a delivery man’s ID, court heard.
NDP’s Horgan formally launches his campaign with attacks on the premier NDP leader John Horgan rolled out his campaign on Wednesday in a giant bus plastered with a photo of his face. He chose Christy Clark’s former ridings of Port Moody and West Point Grey to hammer at the premier a week before the election campaign officially begins on April 11, the day the lieutenant governor is expected to issue the election writ. “I’ve got a bus with a head as big as a bus out there. I’m going to be well-known in 35 days if I’m not wellknown already,” said Horgan. Horgan said he isn’t worried about running for election as leader for the first time against a well-known premier, pointing out that the Clark government is the subject of two RCMP investigations, one for fundraising improprieties, the other for a controversial real estate deal. Horgan said the party’s decision to start campaigning early was no different than the Liberals, who he said are already filling up media email inboxes, making announcements
and campaigning “on the public dime.” “We thought we’d get rolling, get our bus on the road, and we’ve done just that.” Horgan said the recent flood of Liberal announcements and promises, such as the announcement of funding for transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver, “is a desperate move by a desperate government to try to change the channel. The RCMP is not just investigating their fundraising practices, they are also investigating how they are addressing housing in B.C.” Horgan promised to end “big money politics,” and hammered Clark for giving tax breaks to corporations, and for benefiting from “the Wild West of fundraising” in B.C. “We know there is a special prosecutor in place, we know the RCMP is investigating the fundraising tactics, and we want to introduce another element that’s not talked about: The tax breaks given to big corporations over the past few years by the B.C. Liberals.”
ats are chewing up drivers eco friendly wires in cars and leaving massive bills Paul Sharma says his vehicles are under attack. Each of his two family cars have been hit, each time in his own driveway. The culprits: rats. “They say it’s the cold weather, they’re trying to look for a warm space, somewhere to hide in the night,” he said. “When they get hungry, they start chewing on the wires.” Rodents hiding out in vehicle engines is nothing new, but most new cars have a built-in buffet thanks to eco-friendly car wires. “A lot of them are actually soybased,” Mike Londry of Westside Pest Control said. John Sinkie with Budget Brake & Muffler said one in five vehicles he sees now has some sign of a rodent under the intake manifold. “It can cause a lot of damage for a small little guy to get under your hood,” he said. Small wire fixes can cost in the neighbourhood of $400 to $500. One rat’s nest led to a $7,000 bill, according to one mechanic.
ICBC will cover the repair without penalty in most cases. So what can be done to avoid rodent infestations? Mechanics recommend parking your car
inside and wrapping wires in rat-proof tape. Dryer sheets can be an effective deterrent thanks to their strong scent. If you’re looking for something more potent, predator urine can also work wonders. Many hardware stores sell coyote urine, an option Sharma politely declined. Instead, he may just get a cat.

Federal byelections see Liberals get a scare but hold on to Ontario ridings Upstart Conservative and New Democrat candidates gave their heavily favoured Liberal rivals a bit of a scare Monday in a pair of byelections in Ontario where some of Justin Trudeau’s policies and promises played a central role. In the Toronto-area riding of MarkhamThornhill, Liberal candidate and former PMO staffer Mary Ng defeated Ragavan
Paranchothy by a margin of nearly 2,500 votes after her Conservative rival made a strong early showing. A strong performance in the riding — long a Liberal stronghold held by ex-cabinet minister John McCallum — was critical for the Liberals, given the importance of holding Toronto if they want to form government in 2019. It was also important for Ng, who is currently on a leave of absence from her job in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office and seen by some as a strong candidate for cabinet. “The Liberal future is in Ontario,” said
political analyst Tim Powers, vice-president of Summa Strategies. “If the Liberal vote goes down in Markham-Thornhill, then they will want to spend a lot of time diagnosing what went wrong.” That did indeed appear to be the case: with all polls reporting, Ng had claimed just 51.3 per cent of the vote, compared with 55.72 per cent in 2015. The Tory share of the vote was more than five per cent higher. And in Ottawa-Vanier, where the New Democrats campaigned aggressively against the Liberals for breaking a promise to abandon the oft-maligned first-past-the-post electoral system, the NDP’s Emilie Taman gathered nearly 30 per cent of the vote. It was nowhere near enough to challenge Liberal candidate Mona Fortier, however, who had about 50 per cent of the vote and nearly 4,000 votes on Taman with about three-quarters of polls reporting. “I’m feeling really good. We had a great showing. I’m proud of what we achieved,” Taman said in an interview afterward. “The government is going to take notice that the people of Ottawa-Vanier have their concerns…. I think it was an overall disappointment that I was hearing from people, that they didn’t really get the government they thought they were getting.” Liberal party spokesman Braeden Caley was having none of it, calling the outcome a “phenomenal result,” also noting that the government would be getting three new female MPs.
Liberals lose support, Conservatives gain in status quo byelections There were no seat changes in Monday’s federal byelections, but the governing Liberals took a hit in all five of the contested ridings — marking their worst byelection performances so far under Justin Trudeau. The Conservatives saw gains in three of the five ridings while the New Democrats took hits of their own in all but one, leaving the Conservatives as the winners of the night. The Liberals held on to the three ridings they were defending (Markham–Thornhill, Ottawa–Vanier and Saint-Laurent) while the Conservatives retained their two seats of Calgary Midnapore and Calgary Heritage, the latter being the old seat of former prime minister Stephen Harper. But across the five ridings, the Liberals’ vote share dropped by an average of 4.7 points. That was a steeper loss than the NDP’s average 2.2-point decline. The Conservatives gained an average of 4.2 points compared to their support in the 2015 federal election. This is a reversal of the trends exhibited between the 2011 and 2015 votes, when the Liberals made gains in 13 of 15 byelections and the Conservatives suffered losses in all of them. Granted, byelections can be largely driven by local issues. But being on the wrong side of the trend line does not bode well for future performance. Turnout was low on Monday, ranging from 27.5 per cent in Markham–Thornhill to 34.1 per cent in Ottawa–Vanier. Accordingly, the big parties lost votes in every riding — and the Liberals lost vote share across the board. Though the most significant decline for the Liberals occurred in Ottawa–Vanier, the result for Mona Fortier (51.2 per cent of the vote, down 6.4 points) was better than the late Mauril Bélanger’s scores between 2004 and 2011, when the Liberals were either
in opposition or reduced to a minority government. Support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals fell from their 2015 election results in all five byelections Monday, including Calgary Midnapore, where Trudeau campaigned for candidate Haley Brown, right. (Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press) The nomination controversies in Markham–Thornhill and Saint-Laurent did
not seem to have a disproportionate impact on Liberal fortunes, as the decreases suffered there by Mary Ng (down 4.4 points to 51.3 per cent) and Emmanuella Lambropoulos (down 2.5 points to 59.1 per cent) were not notably different than those in the other three ridings. With 71.5 per cent support for Bob Benzen in Calgary Heritage, up 7.7 points from 2015, and 77.2 per cent for Stephanie Kusie (+10.5) in Calgary Midnapore, the Conservatives made a renewed show of strength in two traditional strongholds. Kusie’s score in Calgary Midnapore was the Conservatives’ best in the riding since the merger of the Progressive Conservatives and Canadian Alliance in 2003.

Mixed bag for Suu Kyi’s party as Myanmar ballots counted
Bangladesh court upholds death for 2 in blogger killing Bangladesh’s high court has confirmed the death penalty for two people tied to a banned Islamist militant group given by a trial court two years ago for the killing of an atheist blogger critical of radical Islam. The court also upheld jail sentences for six others Sunday. The decision involves the killing of Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was hacked to death by assailants in 2013. He campaigned for banning the Jamaate-Islami party, which
opposed Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. One of the defendants was the leader of the Ansarullah Bangla Team and the rest were university students inspired by the man’s sermons. Bangladesh in recent years has experienced a surge of attacks by radical Islamists targeting atheist bloggers and writers, as well as foreigners and members of minority groups.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s one-year-old government retained most of its seats in Myanmar by-elections Sunday but braced for symbolic losses in ethnic minority areas as results from the 19-seat poll trickled in. The voting to fill vacant parliamentary seats around Myanmar was seen as a test of the de facto leader’s popularity after a bumpy first year in office. Her National League for Democracy (NLD) stormed to power after dominating a historic 2015 poll that ended half a century of brutal military rule. But disillusionment with her administration has grown in some circles as the young government has struggled to push through promised reforms.
The NLD’s comfortable majority was not threatened by Saturday’s by-elections, which were mostly held to fill a handful of offices emptied by politicians who took on ministerial posts. But initial results on Sunday indicated a measure of discontent among ethnic minorities, who make up a third of the population and have long struggled under the rule of the Bamar majority to which Suu Kyi belongs. The NLD fared well in its strongholds around the commercial capital Yangon and in central regions further north, holding on to seats in at least eight races, according to Union Election Commission Chairman Hla Thein.
Leopard shuts down Nepal airport
NEED WORKERS, PAY ACCORDING TO EXPERIENCE
Nepal had to close its only international airport for around half an hour on Monday after a leopard was spotted close to the runway. A spokesman for the airport in Kathmandu said wildlife and security officers were searching for the animal, believed to be hiding in the drains, after it was spotted by a pilot. “We closed the airport for about 30 minutes after the incident was reported but we haven’t found the leopard yet,” Prem Nath Thakur told AFP. One international flight was delayed but no other flight was scheduled during the closure. Kathmandu is close to forested hills and leopards are occasionally known
to stray into the city. In the past birds have posed serious safety problems at the single-runway airport, although stray cattle and dogs have also been known to disrupt flights.
epal to relocate five rare one horned rhinos Conservationists today captured a rare one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal as part of an attempt to increase the number of the vulnerable animals, which are prized by wildlife poachers. Five rhinos -- one male and four female -will be released into a national park in Nepal’s far west over the coming week in the hope of establishing a new breeding group. The first, a large male estimated to be around 12 years old, was located by rangers in Chitwan National Park after a four-hour search on elephant-back. “He is one of the dominant males in this
area,” said park chief Ram Chandra Kandel. The team of vets, wildlife experts and mahouts hope to capture a second rhino later Monday before departing for Shuklaphanta National Park, a 12-hour drive away. It will take at least a week to capture and transport the remaining rhinos to their new habitat, which is already home to an estimated eight of their kin. The first group of rhinos was released into Shuklaphanta in 2000, Dr Kanchan Thapa, a biologist from conservation group WWF, told AFP. The latest rhinos are needed to replenish the population, he added.

ost y ban, M regrets misconduct After days of obstinacy, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad today regretted his misconduct on a recent Air India flight, paving the way for revocation of the flying ban imposed on him by domestic airliners. “I write to convey my regrets for the unfortunate incident that took place on March 23 on the Air India Flight 852. It could have been no one’s intention to let the situation aggravate to the level it eventually did. While the ongoing investigation will bring out the factual sequence of events to fix responsibility, this incident may kindly not be seen as a reason for likely recurrence of such an event in future,” Gaikwad wrote in a letter to Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju hours after Shiv Sena colleagues heckled the latter triggering unruly scenes in the Lok Sabha. The post-noon acrimony in the Lower House was triggered by Raju justifying the airline ban on Gaikwad and saying that it was really up to the MP to defuse or aggravate the situation. Minutes before Raju spoke in the LS, Gaikwad had refused to apologise to Air India staff for his misconduct, insisting:” I am a teacher and I am very polite.”
A married couple was on Thursday set ablaze allegedly by their relatives who suspected they practised black magic. Police said Sudarshan (50) and his wife Rajeshwari (45), residents of Dubbak town in Siddipet District, suffered 90 per cent burns and are said to be in critical condition. According to Srinivas, Sub-Inspector at Bhoompally Police Station, the husband-wife duo was tied to a pole opposite their house by their relatives. The couple’s kin alleged they practised black magic and were responsible for problems in their lives. They poured kerosene on Sudarshan and Rajeshwari, and set them afire, the police officer said. They were rescued by the police and villagers and shifted to Dubbak government hospital and later to Gandhi Hospital here for treatment, he said. Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident, the officer added.

All four Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bills were approved in the Rajya Sabha today without amendments, thus clearing the way for the rollout of the indirect tax regime in July. Parliament has approved the GST Bills as the Lok Sabha had already passed these last month. The Bills were introduced as Money Bills and many Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha had raised objections on the issue. The Bills cleared by the Rajya Sabha are The Central GST Bill-2017, The Integrated GST Bill-2017, The GST (Compensation to States) Bill-2017and The Union Territory GST Bill2017. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh advised him against moving amendments as it would disturb the consensus arrived at in the GST Council and send a wrong signal for the federal structure. As Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress moved amendment to the Bill that decisions of the GST Council should go through Parliament, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said it would set a wrong precedent for the federal structure as the GST Council was a federal body and it would be very difficult to implement GST in such a scenario. He said the SGST Bill would have to be passed by the state legislatures and it would send a wrong signal, if division is pressed in Parliament. Replying to the debate, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said successive governments had contributed towards the GST and no one person could take credit for it. “This Bill, I have no hesitation in conceding, is a collective property,” he said. Congress members had pointed out during the debate that the GST had been in the making for many years and it was not just the current government that could take credit for it. Responding to concerns raised by Congress leader Kapil Sibal, the Finance Minister said whatever agricultural activities were exempt currently would remain exempt under the GST. Sibal had raised the issue of ancillary agriculture activities being taxed under GST. On the issue of fitment of various commodities in tax slabs, Jaitley said the simple principle is that whatever is the current tax rate, the closest tax slab under GST will apply. The FM said the GST, which will usher in a uniform indirect tax regime in the country, would not lead to inflation, as apprehended by some sections.

While Gaikwad apologised to Parliament, he said he had done nothing wrong with the AI staff and had in fact been victimised. Raju’s refusal to relent to Sena pressure over lifting the ban on Gaikwad led to unprecedented scenes in the LS with senior Sena leader and minister Anant Geete thumping Raju’s desk in rage. Geete had to be ushered away by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his colleagues to defuse the tension. Rajnath later assured the House of an amicable solution to the matter in consultation with stakeholders. Between these events the House saw three adjournments after Sena MPs surrounded Raju’s desk not letting him leave. It was after Rajnath took Geete away with him to his seat that Raju was allowed to exit the LS. The government had been insisting on Gaikwad’s apology even when Sena MPs threatened to stop all flights from Mumbai from tomorrow if their demand wasn’t met. Today Raju had his way when Gaikwad finally wrote to him regretting his conduct. In the letter, Gaikwad requested for the flying ban to be revoked.

Two of the soldiers had been rescued. He said speciallyequipped avalanche rescue teams were searching for the other three soldiers. A high-danger avalanche warning has been issued for Kargil district and a mediumdanger warning for districts of north Kashmir following heavy rainfall and snow in the region.

IT raid at Tamil Nadu Health Minister’s house ahead of bypoll Income Tax Department officials on Friday raided Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar’s residence here and premises of his associates. Raids were also underway at actor Sarathkumar’s house, the senior IT official told IANS on condition of anonymity. The raids were being conducted in at least 20 places here and 11 other places in the rest of Tamil Nadu, the official added. He said: “Trigger for raids at Vijayabaskar’s residence is the money distributed to voters in RK Nagar constituency where bypoll is slated on April 12.”
The officer said the Minister was on IT radar for the past one year in connection with his quarry business.
Rahul: Tragedies occur when govt allows lynch mobs to rule Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today attacked the BJP government for the lynching of a man by cow vigilantes in Alwar and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was propagating a vision that only one idea would prevail. Describing the Alwar case as a shocking breakdown of law and order, Rahul took a swipe at Modi’s “New India” idea. “This is the new vision for India that Modi is propagating. It is a vision where only one idea will prevail and any other idea, anybody who does not listen to or agree with Modi or RSS has no place in India. That’s the vision. That is what they are doing. This is going to have severe consequences for the country,” he said.
Earlier, Rahul attacked the BJP-led Rajasthan Government for the incident, saying: “When the government abdicates responsibility and allows lynch mobs to rule, tragedies of immense proportion follow. There is a shocking breakdown of law and order in Alwar.” He said the Congress expected the government to take strict action against those responsible for the attack and all right-thinking Indians must condemn the blind brutality. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue in the Lok Sabha. He had moved an adjournment motion on the issue but Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected it.

Kanpur victims demand SIT to reinvestigate cases closed by UP Police Victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots from Kanpur on Friday moved the Supreme Court demanding setting up of a special
investigation team (SIT) to probe the murders of over 125 people. In a petition filed in the top court, petitioners Manjit Singh GK and others demanded reinvestigation of at least seven cases registered at Bazaria and Nazirabad police stations that had been closed by the police for want of evidence. Complaining that no significant action had been taken by the authorities, the petitioners said: “There is mockery of criminal justice system as far as the case of riots victims is concerned.” The petitioners alleged that even after 33 years there was no constructive action on the part of the Uttar Pradesh Government
and the police to provide them justice or to rehabilitate and compensate them. “It’s an irony...that in the city of Kanpur, in the knowledge of the petitioners, 127 persons belonging to the Sikh community were brutally murdered/ burnt to death in different police station areas. However, none of the police stations is even ready to acknowledge their deaths,” the petitioners submitted. Petitioners’ counsel Prasoon Kumar told a Bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra that no action had been taken to prosecute perpetrators of the crime. The Bench posted the matter for hearing on April 24 along with another PIL on anti-Sikh riots in Delhi where almost 3,000 Sikhs were killed in the riots that broke out following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka has been offered a house (No 500) in Sector 16 that the Congress had rejected during the AkaliBJP government’s tenure, saying that the residence was “demeaning” to the stature of the top Opposition leader. Phoolka, who stays at Punjab Bhawan during his visits to the city, has turned down the offer. The Dakha legislator has been insisting on the allotment of House No 46, Sector 2. It was this residence that the Congress’ Leader of the Opposition had occupied during the past decade. Charanjit Singh Channi, who held
this post during the last few months of the SAD-BJP tenure and is now a minister in the Capt Amarinder Singh government, has retained the house. Phoolka told The Tribune, “It is ironic that the Congress offered the main opposition party’s senior leader an accommodation which it had rejected. This is their ploy to embarrass us and provoke us so that they can call us confrontationist.” The AAP leader said he didn’t want any special accommodation, but the party would not give up its right. “The Leader of the Opposition has always occupied a house next to the Chief Minister’s,” he added.

US Congress recognises Baisakhi as day of Khalsa creation
We provide you different colors choice (White, Black, Beige, Brown) The US House of Representatives has recognised Baisakhi as the day of the creation of Khalsa in 1699, during the 115th Congress’ first session. Though Baisakhi celebrations have been held on the premises of the White House, the recognition was endorsed for the first time in the House of Representatives. The resolution was submitted by Congressmen John Garamendi and Patrick Meehan, who co-chair the American Sikh Congressional Caucus. It has come at a time when the incidents of hate crime against the Sikh community are on the rise in the United States and the US administration is apparently eyeing to create awareness to control such incidents. The resolution said, “Baisakhi is an annual festival celebrating the spring harvest season and it is particularly significant to the Sikh religion and is one of the most important dates in Sikh history.” “For Sikhs, Baisakhi commemorates the creation of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699,” it added. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said the Sikhs were indebted to the US Congress for the initiative. SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar said the US had given respect to Sikh sentiments during the time when the community was facing hate crime.

Dinner diplomacy as Cong leaders eye vacant slots Dinner diplomacy has taken centre stage in Congress circles. MLAs keen to become Parliamentary Secretaries are scrambling to invite Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and his Cabinet colleagues for dinner. At least three senior party leaders have already played host to Capt Amarinder since March 11, the day the Congress was voted to power — Amloh MLA Randeep Singh Nabha, former MLA from Barnala Kewal Singh Dhillon and Cabinet minister Rana Gurjit Singh. Though some of those hosting the dinner parties term it a routine affair, insiders feel there is more to it than meets the eye. Various Congress MLAs and leaders are vying for political slots available in the government. Apart from the induction of 18 Parliamentary and Chief Parliamentary Secretaries in the government, several other important slots are up for grabs. Already, senior Congress leader and former

minister Lal Singh has been adjusted as the chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board, which is considered to be an organisation that is more important than some ministries. As many as eight slots are vacant for appointment as ministers. The aspirants have stepped up their efforts ever since Capt Amarinder announced to appoint Chief Parliamentary Secretaries and Parliamentary Secretaries. Among the MLAs whose names are doing the rounds for the post of these slots are Navdeep Singh Goldy, Sushil Kumar Rinku, Kuldeep Singh Vaid, Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Kuljit Singh Nagra, Fateh Jang Singh Bajwa, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurpreet Kangar and Darshan Brar.
3 booked for Akali sarpanch’s murder The police have booked three men on the charge of murdering Beant Singh, Akali sarpanch of Manuke village in Nihalsinghwala subdivision of the district, late last night. No arrest has been made so far. The victim’s mother, Surinder Kaur, told the police that Rajinder Kumar Goga and Kuldeep Singh Keepa of Manuke village and Raman Kumar of Badhni Kalan had murdered her son. After recording her statement, a case was registered under
Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at Nihalsinghwala police station. The cops raided the houses and possible hideouts of the accused. A preliminary investigation revealed that Goga and his accomplices killed Beant over property. Local residents said Keepa used to be Beant’s friend. The police said at least seven cases of heinous crimes had been registered against the sarpanch in the past five years.

Canada-based Prof Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation has been making efforts to get the name of Bhai Mewa Singh Lopoke removed from the list of criminals in Canada. This was disclosed by foundation’s president Sahib Singh Thind, who met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh yesterday. “We have requested the intervention of Jathedar Gurbachan Singh in the case of Lopoke, who was hanged for the welfare of the Sikh community in Canada in 1915. Till date, his name is included in the list of criminals,” he said. Bhai Mewa Singh had raised his voice over racism against Sikhs in Canada. During the period, government representative Inspector Charles Hopkinson, who was threatening Bhai Mewa Singh to step back, was murdered. In 1915, Bhai Mewa Singh was executed in New Westminster. Thind said: “Though it was a crime as per the Canadian law, Khalsa Diwan Society, Vancouver, and other organisations across British Columbia hold events every year in the memory of Bhai Mewa Singh.” He expressed his gratitude over declaring the Komagata Maru passengers as “martyrs” by the five high priests 103 years after the incident. The foundation was instrumental in convincing the Canadian government to accept responsibility and apologise for the tragic mistake that prevented the Komagata Maru passengers from immigrating peacefully and securely.

Hundreds evacuated from New Zealand town after levee fails People used jet boats and tractors to help rescue about 2,000 residents of a New Zealand town after a river burst through a concrete levee Thursday, flooding hundreds of homes and businesses.
Local authorities declared a state of emergency after the levee failed in the town of Edgecumbe on the North Island. New Zealand has been drenched in recent days by the remnants of Cyclone Debbie, which flooded parts of Australia’s east coast last week. Tony Bonne, the mayor of the Whakatane District Council, said the water was more than 1 metre (3.3 feet) deep in some homes and that one nearby river had reached an all-time record height. He said some leaking had occurred around the concrete levee on the Rangitaiki River before it failed. He said crews had worked to reinforce the structure and thought they had it secured when “she just let go.” “Some people are in shock, of course, but many are accepting that this is something that’s a part of nature which they have no
control over,” Bonne said. “Most people in these small towns rally around each other and Edgecumbe is no different.” Andy Best, a meteorologist with MetService, said a nearby weather monitoring station had recorded 191 millimeters (7.5 inches) of rain over the last couple of days, an amount that would typically fall over two months. He said the worst of the weather system had passed and the forecast was for improved weather in the coming days. The rains also affected the town of Kaikoura, where access roads were closed due to mudslides. Access to the town has been reduced since a powerful earthquake last November brought down hillsides and closed the main northbound route. Bonne said questions would come about how the water flow was managed from hydroelectric dams upstream on the Rangitaiki River before the levee failed. Local Government Minister Anne Tolley said she understood that the operators of the dams had released some water over the past few days in anticipation of the high rainfall, but she didn’t have the technical expertise to know if they had done enough. She said authorities have set up two welfare centres where people from Edgecumbe can stay, and she didn’t know when they would be able to return to their homes. “The message is, it’s not safe, your life could be at risk, don’t go home,” she said. “And that’s really hard.”

The Reserve Bank has already confirmed that a coloured commemorative circulation coin will be issued in early 2017 to commemorate the Olympic gold medal win. Whiteside has confirmed that the RBF Board of Directors had, at its July 2016 meeting, approved the minting of a coloured commemorative circulation coin in limited quantities should Fiji win a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. This will be the first coloured commemorative circulation coin for Fiji. Only a limited quantity of this coloured commemorative circulation coin will be minted, which means that it would fast become a collector’s item for the general public.

Pakistan isn’t naming a new airport after Chinese resident i inping it was an pril ool s ay oke Several Pakistanis, including the country’s former interior minister, fell for an April Fool’s Day ‘fake news’ reports a newspaper published yesterday. The Express Tribune published a most serious sounding report yesterday, April 1, that a new airport, soon to be inaugurated

The report had a fake quote from an unnamed leader from the ruling PML (N) party. “Party leaders believe that naming Islamabad airport after the Chinese president is a great gesture,” the fake news report said. It even printed a fake tweet from cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan. The report led to opposition PPP leader Rehman Malik expressing “serious reservations” about the idea. He warned Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif government that his party would take the issue to an “extreme level” if it tried to the rename the airport currently named after late PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, The Express News Tribune reported today, in a real news story.

20 people killed by ‘mentally ill’ custodian of dargah At least 20 people, including six members of a family, were tortured and killed at a shrine allegedly by its “mentally ill” custodian and his associates in Sargodha in Pakistan’s Punjab province. Sargodha Deputy Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatta said the incident took place at the dargah (shrine) of Muhammad Ali Gujjar in a village in Sargodha district, some 200 km from Lahore, at around midnight yesterday. The custodian Abdul Waheed, who was apparently suffering from mental disease,
used a dagger and a stick to kill his victims, he said. Chatha said it appeared that the caretakers of the dargah had first drugged the visitors, stripped them and then stabbed and clubbed 20 people, including three women, to death. Police official Mazhar Shah said that the motive behind the crime has not been ascertained yet but locals have said that from last two years the suspect used to visit the area for ‘spiritual sessions’ with the disciples.

India born woman raped, killed by homeless man, UK court told An Indian-origin hotel housekeeper whose body had been discovered from a wasteland near Heathrow airport in west London last November was raped and murdered by a homeless stranger, a UK court was told on Wednesday.
Pardeep Kaur had been reported missing on October 17, 2016, by a relative after she did not come home from work.
The 30-year-old’s missing person’s investigation was soon taken over by the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, who arrested and charged Vadims Ruskuls, from Latvia, for Kaur’s murder and preventing her lawful burial. Her murder trial opened at the Old Bailey court in London this week, where the jury was told that Ruskuls “pounced” on Kaur as she walked to work, ‘Evening Standard’ reports. “The defendant must have pounced on Pardeep Kaur at some point on that ramp, he must then have sexually assaulted her and then murdered her. There is some evidence that Pardeep Kaur must have fought back. A day after the incident, it was noticed he had a number of scratches on his face,” Prosecutor Crispin Aylett told the court.
Indian origin duo ailed for cable TV fraud in UK Two Indian-origin men in the UK have been jailed for fraud after pleading guilty to a multimillion-pound scam that enabled hundreds of people to tune in to paid-for cable TV channels for free. Manish Javahar was sentenced to 21 months in jail and Bobby Bhairon was handed a 19-month sentence which has been suspended for two years, at Leicester Crown Court this week. The sentence of the two men in their 30s follows the conviction of a number of others last year in relation to a conspiracy to defraud Virgin Media cable TV provider, Leicester Mercury reported. The man who masterminded the scam, Mahesh Tailor, was jailed for six years in August 2016. Tailor was the director and owner of Tailor Made Circuits and found a method of bypassing the encryption system used to protect cable channels supplied by Virgin Media. The court was told that he imported

set-top boxes from the Far East and sold them across the country, using a network of people to assist him. “This was a lengthy and complex investigation which saw officers being deployed at various locations across the country to take the network down and render the boxes useless. When we raided Tailor’s home, we found 250,000 pounds in cash in various rooms. There were similar amounts held in his business bank accounts,” Detective Constable Amrat Bhagwan of Leicestershire Police, who investigated the case, said. “The boxes were imported from the Far East and documentation showed that Tailor claimed that they were satellite receivers and even paid importation tax on them. He did everything in his power to stop himself appearing on the radar,” he said. Two other Indian-origin men had been convicted in relation to the fraud last year Jagdish Vegad and Jitesh Racicchandra.
I man fined for impersonating a doctor in Australia A 41-year-old Indian-origin man, accused of impersonating a British-Indian doctor and working in various hospitals for more than a decade in Australia, was on Monday fined with the maximum penalty of 30,000 dollars for the “most serious level” offence. Shyam Acharya, who posed as Sarang Chitale, a rheumatologist in the UK, came to Australia in 2003 and worked with New South Wales (NSW) Health. Chitale, who works at Leigh Infirmary near Manchester, was “shocked” after he came to know that Acharya has stolen his identity. Acharya was also able to gain citizenship, an Australian passport and property, all in Chitale’s name. He worked for NSW Health as a junior doctor from 2003 to May 2014 at four hospitals in Australia. Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court magistrate Jennifer Atkinson found the offence was of the “most serious level and warranted the maximum penalty of a 30,000 dollars fine.” She also ordered Acharya to pay the prosecution costs of more than 22,000 dollars, local media reported. Acharya allegedly stole Chitale’s university degrees and medical certification when they both lived together, with Chitale’s grandmother, in India between 1999 and 2000. While fining him in his absence in the court, Atkinson said it was the worst case of this type of offence. She said before the research job, Acharya had worked in NSW hospitals for more than a decade, it said. Atkinson disclosed that inquiries were made with Chitale’s supervisor in Britain and it became apparent Acharya was using his identity.

Indian doctor wins over s in lottery in UAE An Indian woman doctor has has won a life-changing lottery in Abu Dhabi of over Rs 17.5 crore. Nishita Radhakrishna Pillai, from Kerala, won the Dirham 10 million (approximately Rs 17,68,00,000) lottery in the Big Ticket raffle.
After 50 numerous attempts at striking gold at one of the most-anticipated raffle bonanzas in the UAE, the mother of two finally joined the ranks of high-net-worth individuals. Pillai, a medical practitioner who is currently in the US, is the second person to bring home Dirham 10 million, the biggest amount granted to a draw participant since the inception of the raffle bonanza, Gulf News reported. Pillai, who used to work as a paediatrician in the UAE for approximately two years, is currently in Houston, Texas, with her husband and two children, to finish her fellowship in genetics. Pillai and her family flew to the US last July for the scholarship, but distance did not prove to be a hindrance for participating in the

UAE’s popular raffle draw. Since six months ago, her husband has been buying tickets online under her name and so far, 50 coupons have been purchased. “He would buy five tickets for every draw. My husband is such a big fan of the UAE. Well, we enjoyed our time working there and we do have plans to go back,” Pillai was quoted as saying. Pillai and her husband have not decided what to do with the money yet. “It’s such a big amount and besides we were awaken by the good news in the middle of the night and we can’t even think straight,” she said. “It was my dad who shared the news with us since he’s the one who got the call from the organisers, and at first we thought it was a prank call. We had to check the Big Ticket website to confirm it,” Pillai said. The millionaire promotion is the longestrunning and the biggest raffle draw hosted at the Abu Dhabi International Airport. So far, the Big Ticket raffle has declared 178 millionaires, with the first few winners taking home Dirham 1 million. Last month, a 33-year-old Indian expatriate in Abu Dhabi won over Rs 12 crore. Sreeraj Krishnan Kopparembil, also from Kerala, won a whopping Dirham 7 million (approx. Rs 12,71,70,000) in the Abu Dhabi Big Ticket Draw.

‘It will be premature to draw conclusion over Haley’s remarks’ Foreign Policy experts on Tuesday said it will be premature to draw a conclusion based on comments by US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley about possible intervention by the Trump administration to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan. But at the same time, they felt India must send a strong message to Washington that no third party mediation of the issue is acceptable to India. “Firstly, the comments were in response to a question. We do not know whether it is a policy decision by the US or an off-the-cuff remark. It is too premature to come to a conclusion based on the remarks,” said Meera Shankar, who was India’s Ambassador to the US from from 2009 to 2011. Haley, a senior IndianAmerican member of the Trump administration, said in New York that the US would try and “find its place” in efforts to de-escalate Indo-Pak tensions and not wait till “something happens”, indicating President Donald Trump could play a role in such endeavours. Shankar said the US policy has been to ensure de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan but America never saw a role for it in resolving issues between the two countries. “Still, we should make our position very clear to the US that we are not open to any third party intervention (in resolving issues with Pakistan),” she said. Echoing Shankar’s view, former
diplomat G Parthasarathy also downplayed Haley’s comments, saying she is just US’ representative to the UN and she never mentioned that the US will mediate between India and Pakistan. “Let’s not jump to a conclusion. The US has always favoured de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan,” he said. Parthasarathy, who was India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, said there were instances of US intervention, including during Kargil war, in bringing down tension between the two South Asian neighbours. “Haley’s statement was badly worded but it does not indicate that the US will mediate,” said Parthasarathy. India’s former envoy to US Naresh Chandra called the comments a “clever move” by the US to send a signal to Pakistan that it was with Islamabad on the issue. He said there is an “aggressive lobby” in the US which wants intervention by Washington in resolving issues between India and Pakistan. “It is an ill advised move. There is a clever design by a lobby which wants US intervention... We should tell the Trump administration very clearly that there is no question of any intervention by either the US or the UN (in resolving issues between India and Pakistan,” Chandra, who served as Indian Ambassador to the US between 1996 and 2001, said.

Lyricist Visits Producer For Work, Gets An Indecent Proposal Instead Who says that the casting couch only exploits PYTs hoping to get a break in the big bad world of Bollywood. This young lyricist who
has delivered a few hits did not know that he will get an indecent proposal when a male producer agreed to meet him. Now, this lyricist is a new name in the industry but has penned a couple of well known songs. In a bid to secure some work, he approached a producer who was working on a much-hyped big budget film. For the first few days,
the producer avoided his calls but later agreed to meet the lyricist. The producer asked the lyricist to see him at his office with a few samples of his work. The lyricist agreed and met him. Maybe he did not know that the producer is known to have a penchant for men. The producer was extremely well behaved and then asked the lyricist to drop by at his place so that he could narrate the scenes to him. The lyricist did not doubt his intentions and was on cloud nine, believing that he was close to signing a new project. But when he dropped by at the producer’s bachelor pad, he was in for a shock. The producer seemed like a changed man and made his move, asking the lyricist for a sexual favour in return of this dream project.

This Lady Threw Aamir Khan Out Of The Room Aamir Khan is not known as Mr Perfectionist just for the heck of it. He makes sure he is present for every aspect during the making of his film - whether it’s the dubbing sessions of other artistes or the music compositions or the song recordings. It’s not just now; even at the start of his career he had the same zest. However, this enthusiasm of his made a lady throw his out of the room. Wonder who she is? Well, it’s one of India’s topmost female vocalists Alka Yagnik. It so happened, that Alka was recording for the song Gazab Ka Hai Din from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). A very good looking boy was sitting quietly in the corner of the recording room while Alka was recording the track. However, the boy’s constant gaze was disturbing Alka from performing to her full potential. Thus, she asked him to step out from the room. Once she completed the whole recording, she came out of the recording room, and director Mansoor Ali Khan took her to meet the leading man of the movie
for which the song was to be used. That young boy who was thrown out of the room was none other than Aamir. Terming it as one of the most embarrassing situations of her life ever, Alka said during a TV show, My Life My Story (to be aired on Zee Classic on April 8), “I was recording Gazab Ka
Hai Din for Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. I noticed this handsome looking young guy sitting quietly in the singing room. Initially, I ignored and carried on with my rehearsals but when the recording started, I was feeling uncomfortable. When you are singing and someone is staring at you blankly, it is kind of a disturbance.

Twinkle Khanna had spoken about dropping social entreprenuer Arunachalam Muruganantham’s story from her book, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad, after he said she resembled Raveena Tandon, hubby Akshay Kumar’s ex flame. When Raveena, who is promoting her upcoming film Maatr, was told about the comparison, she reportedly said, “Oh, she did? I want to see her comment. Show me what she said. I don’t believe that.” When Ravs was told that Twinkle had merely joked about it, she said, “We are friends and know each other in the industry; we all meet regularly.” Have things thawed between them? Considering the bitter break-up between Akki and Ravs after a rumoured engagement, the claim seems too far fetched.

Three Way Fight Over Shah Rukh Khan: Deepika Padukone Vs Anushka Sharma Vs Katrina Kaif for a replacement for Deepika Padukone, we hear, is Anushka Sharma. Aanand L Rai has been setting up the stage of his biggest project till date for more than a year now and had started the recce in London. “Film with Khan saab is my most ambitious project because he is the main casting of the film. Ranbir Kapoor’s exes Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif have a famously frosty equation So when reports recently claimed that the two Bollywood beauties will work together in Aanand L Rai’s next starring Shah Rukh Khan, everyone sat up and took notice. But SpotboyE. com can tell you that the situation is not as sorted as it seems. Deepika was reportedly the first one to be finalised for the film which will see SRK playing a dwarf. Then they started the hunt for the other female lead. Katrina was sent the script and she took a long time to say yes. But SpotboyE.com can tell you that when Katrina finally said yes a few days ago, she made it clear that she is still not comfortable with the idea of working with Deepika. Now, Rai is in a sticky spot. Both roles are tailor made for Deepika and Katrina. Who will he let go? Katrina or Deepika? The only name that has crossed Rai’s mind

Movie Review
Ghost in the Shell Ghost in The Shell is the big Hollywood release this week and it stars popular actress Scarlett Johansson in the lead. If you have been following Hollywood news and gossip, you would have heard how her casting in the movie had created a lot of stir. Ghost in The Shell is based on an acclaimed Japanese anime by the same name, and the makers of the Hollywood reboot have been accused of whitewashing the protagonist. If you don’t understand what’s the fuss is all about, imagine if Hollywood made Shaktimaan in India but used Robert Downey Jr to play him. Anyway, Ghost in the Shell reboot is directed by Rupert Sanders, who previously made Snow White and The Huntsman, which had some beautiful visual shots and action scenes. What’s it about In the distant future, cybernetics has become the way of life, and humans have used robotics to enhance themselves from poisoning and amputations. In these times, in Japan, Hanka Industries, a pioneer in this field, makes a new advancement when they create Major Mira (Scarlett Johansson) – an artificial body with a functional brain. When she regains consciousness, she is told by her doctor (Juliette Binoche) that she was a soldier in the army, who suffered a grievous bodily injury during a terrorist attack, and this was the only way to save her. A year later, she is the part of the law and order department, headed by Chief Daisuke Aramaki (Beat Takeshi Kitano), and has a loyal partner in Batou (Pilou Asbaek). She is hounded by flashes of her memory, which her doctor dismisses as glitches. In pursuit of a dangerous terrorist who calls himself Kluze (Michael Pitt), Major comes to find certain truths about her own
past, and that she may be more of a victim than a scientific victory. What’s hot I have to be honest here – I haven’t seen the original anime, so I cannot say for sure if this adaptation justifies the original. But it also helps me to not compare and treat this movie as an independent product to review. The first thing that strikes you about Ghost in the Shell is the ravishing visual beauty that the makers have created in every given frame. The artificial bodywork created for Scarlett is a VFX marvel, so even when she goes nude, it shouldn’t make our Censors cringe. The depiction of the futuristic society and how Major interacts with the world is very well rendered, filled with psychedelic colours and holograms. It also has to be noted that even though that world has advanced so much that billboards are now animated holograms, this is also the world where there are still poor and people are still being oppressed by the government. Major’s predicament of fitting herself among the humans and the doubt she has about not being one is a nice idea, which sadly is less explored for more action scenes. The sound editing is brilliant too, and so is the background score. Whitewashing controversy apart, Scarlett Johansson makes for a fine
Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi thriller will stun you with its striking visuals protagonist and gives a strong performance. She is sexy and intimidating at the same time. As her boss, ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano is one of
the strong points of the movie, especially that one badass moment he has near the climax that makes us look at him with more respect. Michael Pitt is fantastic as the pained sort-of antagonist, who is still simmering under the betrayal of his makers. Though he doesn’t get much to do, Pilou Asbaek (looking like an
older version of Lost Boys’ Kiefer Sutherland) provides good foil in the supporting category. What’s not One of the major criticisms most of the reviews have about the movie is the whitewashing. Now we make films where Mary Kom is played by Priyanka Chopra, so I am not going to address that part. The movie is made on a huge budget, and the makers need a huge star to make the movie recover the money. So we have to grant them that levy. Though how the writers try to work around the whitewashing issue in the script will not be something everyone can accept (no spoilers here). My main bone of contention was more with the screenplay than with anything else. After setting up the world, the premise and the protagonist, the screenplay meanders for some time before it gets back on fast mode, before getting slack again. Certain portions could have been trimmed, like Major’s touchy-feely rendezvous with a hooker. Like I mentioned before, I have not seen the original anime so don’t know about its plot. But the screenplay here is like Ex Machina meets Avatar meets Captain America: Winter Soldier. The focus on action scenes, while high on VFX, takes away the impetus from the emotion core of the movie, while the climax is disappointing. What to do Ghost in The Shell has a marvelous, beautiful shell but the soul within gets bland at times. I would still recommend you to watch this movie for the amazing visual beauty each frame has to offer and of course, Scarlett Johansson.

Kanpur man prevents bank robbery by spitting gutkha into the eyes of robbers, gets bravery award A Kanpur man who prevented a bank robbery by spitting gutkha in the eyes of the robbers, was today felicitated with a bravery award by the local administration. Armed with nothing but a mouthful of his favorite ‘Double Ghoda’ gutkha, Yogendra Kumar managed to tackle 3 robbers who were out rob Jankalyan Bank in the city.
Reports say that the robbers entered the bank around 2:30 pm, armed with country made pistols and knives. They threatened the head cashier and were filling their duffel bag with cash when Yogendra saw an opportunity and let out a spray of gutkha that momentarily blinded the robbers, who were later overpowered by the bank staff and handed over to the police. “The thieves took advantage of the fact most cops were busy with anti-romeo squads
and gauraksha. But thanks to alert citizens like Yogendra, we have someone to fall back on,” said the Police Chief. Unable to have a conversation with our reporter due his gutkha filled mouth, Yogendra spoke in sign language and said that he was happy to receive the award and he’d wouldn’t hesitate to try it out again to maintain law and order in the city. He added that gutkha more effective than pepper spray and women too should try it out to tackle harassment. The cctv footage of the robbery attempt went viral with many praising Mr. Kumar’s presence of mind. One bollywood producer apparently is also planning a superhero movie called ‘Gutkha-man’ dedicated to the heroics of the Kanpur resident. The incident has got the spotlight back again on the gutkha ban imposed in Govt offices by Uttar Pradesh CM. Many Govt officials now want the ban revoked saying that it’s not just a safety tool, it also increases their productivity. Sources close to the CM have said that the matter will be taken up in the next cabinet meeting. The next few weeks could just see gutkha packets making their way back into government offices. Meanwhile, riding on Yogendra’s popularity, makers of Double Ghoda have now signed him as their brand ambassador. By @jurnoleast

Steve Smith makes Aadhar card to encash his ‘Man of the Match’ cheque in bank
The captain of Rising Pune Supergiant, Steve Smith, suffered a huge shock when he came to know that he cannot encash his ‘Man of The Match’ cheque in the bank unless he has an Aadhar Card. Smith on Thursday scored an unbeaten 84 to guide his team to victory over Mumbai Indians. He was awarded a cheque of Rs. 1 lac for his match winning performance. On Friday morning when he went to his bank, the cashier refused to give him the money stating that cash cannot be given unless the bearer of the cheque has a photocopy of Aadhar card.An emotional Steve told Faking News, “My brain faded for the second time in 2017 when I heard that I won’t get my hard earned money. And this time, I couldn’t even ask the dressing room members to help me out. How can I possibly have an Indian Identity card if I am a citizen of Australia?
But then I found a guy named Babloo outside the bank. He is an agent who makes fake Aadhar cards for just Rs. 500, with some ultra modern technique called Jugaad. I don’t know much about this technique but I wanted that Aadhar card to get my money.” By Friday afternoon, Babloo handed over an Aadhar Card to Steve Smith, who went to the bank and easily encashed his cheque by providing a photocopy of the card. Apparently, there was no cross-checking whether the card is real or fake. In our investigation we found out that the cashier is a football fan, who hates cricket and doesn’t even know the fact that Steve Smith is an Australian. If sources are to be believed, PAN card will now be mandatory for betting in IPL games. Many of the bookies have started to apply for PAN cards via Babloo. By sagarcasm

Smith continues to rock on Pune turf RPS skipper scores sizzling 84* to cause Mumbai Indians’ 7-wicket defeat SHREERAM GOKHALE sports@mid-day.com PUNE: Rising Pune Supergiant skipper Steven Smith continued his rich vein of form by slamming an invaluable 84 not out in his Indian Premier League team’s victory against Mumbai Indians at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium here last night. The hosts won by seven wickets with Smith ending up on 84 off 54 balls. Former India captain MS Dhoni was at the other end with an unbeaten 12. Only recently, Smith scored three centuries in the four-match Test series against India, the first of those tons coming in the opening Test at Pune where Australia drew first blood with a 333-run victory. Of course, they lost the series 1-2. Earlier, Jos Buttler’s big hitting at the top of the order and some equally fabulous hitting from Hardik Pandya at the end helped Mumbai Indians to a challenging score after being put in to bat. Mumbai Indians turned the momentum on its head by smashing 36 runs off the final seven deliveries of their innings. It began with Tim Southee hammering Ben Stokes straight over the sightscreen off the final ball of the 19th over. And then it was the Hardik Pandya show. Pandya smashed a hapless Ashok Dinda towards the covers, long off and long on stands, in that order, off the

first three balls. Pandya then top-edged one over the wicketkeeper for a boundary, before hitting Dinda over long on for another big one. A wide and a bye off the final ball took Mumbai Indians to a pretty challenging total considering the conditions. Earlier, Buttler and Parthiv Patel gave the visitors a flying start. The duo helped Mumbai Indians race to 41 off the first four overs. The introduction of Imran Tahir, in the fifth, changed things drastically. Tahir first
cleaned up Patel off his second ball, and then removed Rohit Sharma and Buttler in his second over. Buttler hit 38 runs from 19 balls, including three fours and as many sixes.

AB de Villiers
BANGALORE: AB De Villiers has a lot of time for Virat Kohli and even rates him as the best batsman in the world but not even Kohli can get the former to don the wicketkeeping gloves again. Afflicted with shoulder and elbow injuries he may be but it’s a bad back, something he has suffered from for many years now, that is De Villiers’ main worry and the reason he won’t be ‘keeping anytime soon, if at all, either for club or country. “I’ll miss the next five years if I start ’keeping again. My back won’t allow that. My back is sore because of all those years of ‘keeping,” De Villiers
HYDERABAD: Star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh said he has been batting with more freedom after making a successful return to the Indian ODI team earlier this year. Yuvraj made a comeback to the Indian team against England earlier this year and roared back to form with a brutal century in the second ODI in Cuttack and then followed it up with a gritty 45 in the third and final game in Kolkata. Vintage Yuvraj was again on full display on Wednesday, this time for defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). “I enjoyed my batting. My batting has been up and down over the couple of years, but I am feeling really good at the moment. I just need to continue this good run forward. The comeback into the Indian team has really helped me. I am more free in my mind and I am not worrying anymore about making a comeback. I am just playing according to the situation and expressing myself,” said Yuvraj after playing a match-winning 62-run knock off just 27 balls in his side’s 35-run win over RCB. PTI

Gautam Gambhir, Chris Lynn help KKR cruise to 10-wicket win over Gujarat Lions Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders cantered to a 10-wicket win over Gujarat Lions in their opening match of the the Indian Premier League, here today. Chasing a challenging 184 for win, Chris Lynn (93 not out) and skipper Gautam Gambhir (76 not out) put on unbeaten 184 runs for the opening wicket to
cruise to the victory. Lynn consumed just 41 balls and struck six boundaries and as many as eight sixes during his fiery knock. Gambhir, on the other hand, was at his subtle best and scored his runs off 48 deliveries with the help of 12 fours. While Lynn was at his aggressive best, Gambhir played the second
fiddle initially in the match-winning partnership. Earlier, skipper Suresh Raina led from the front with a half century while Dinesh Karthik added the fireworks later on as Gujarat Lions posted 183/4 in 20 overs in their opening Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Kolkata Knight Riders here on Friday.
Raina (68 not out off 51) was dropped twice during his stay, with the veteran of the shortest format of cricket making the most of his lives to notch up his 29th fifty in the IPL. Raina also surpassed India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain (RCB) captain Virat Kohli as the highest run getter in the T20 league.

Aamir Khan chopped off a Katrina Kaif song in Dhoom 3? Dhoom 3 was one of the biggest hits of 2013. The YRF venture starred Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan as the new entries in the franchise, while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra reprised their roles from the previous films. It was promoted to be bigger and better than the previous two films, and certainly it was. But well, here is a blast from the past. Aamir, who is notorious for interfering with the editing process and creative decisions of his movies, snatched Katrina off of a very important sequence.
Despite not having a strong role, fans loved Katrina for her performance in Dhoom 3. Her dance in Kamli and Malang were especially well received. But from what we hear, we were to see more of Katrina’s backstory through a song, but it never saw the light of day courtesy, Aamir Khan. Katrina essayed the role of the ambitious and gold-hearted acrobat Aliya in Dhoom 3. Our source reveals that this song centred solely on her character. The setting of the song was such – after getting to know Aamir well
enough, Katrina takes him on a tour of her life before him. She sings, she dances, and she does kickass acrobatics and narrates her story through the song. But guess what? Aamir didn’t think the song went with the flow of the film, and hence it ended up being chopped off. Ouch!
“myry qy myry pirvwr v`lNo sB nUM ivswKI dIAW l`K-l`K vDweIAW” -punIq sMdr
Katrina had rehearsed for the song for over a month. She practised her dance moves and stunts to perfection. There was even a complicated stunt involving a trapezium for which the actress did not even use a body double. She shot for it with utmost zeal and gave it her 100 percent. Imagine her horror when she was told about the song’s ultimate fate. She just received a call one fine night, informing her of the “creative decision”. This was not the first time Katrina had faced a problem like this with YRF. She was supposed to be a part of Ranbir KapoorDeepika Padukone starrer Bachna Ae Haseeno as well. But makers had to cut her storyline before she could even shoot it. Director Sidharth Anand confirmed in an interview, in 2008, that Katrina’s track was cut as it was lengthening the film a bit too much. He was obviously “upset” about it. Kat took the news of being dropped from the film very sportingly. The case was not the same with the song in Dhoom 3. We hear that she was left heartbroken after learning about the new development. While Raees, Kaabil, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania managed to mint money at the box office, though not as exceptional as we wanted them to perform, there have been others that have withered away like OK Jaanu, Machine, Rangoon not making much of an impact. Even critically acclaimed movies like Trapped and The Ghazi Attack couldn’t set the cash registers ringing. So there was a scarcity of movies that completely bowled over both the audiences and the critics. Perhaps the coming months might compensate for the slack. Still, there have been movies that somewhat left us decently impressed in this quarter. Sure they were no Neerja, or Dangal but at least some of them either managed to sway the critic in me or cheer up the frontbencher in mere. Here are five such movies. • The Ghazi Attack • Kaabil • Badrinath Ki Dulhania • Trapped • Jolly LLB 2

Citing concerns about affordability in Canada’s hottest housing market, federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau has called for a meeting with Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa and Toronto Mayor John Tory. Tory’s office confirmed on Thursday that the request for a meeting was made, and

said “we expect the date to be set soon.” In a letter sent to Sousa, Morneau raises concerns about Canadians’ rising debt levels. He’s also worried that home ownership will become out of reach for all but the wealthy. “Middle-class Canadians have become increasingly worried about being able to afford a home for their families,” he writes. Morneau’s letter also says rapid price increases will have “long-term implications for housing ability and housing market

The average selling price for all properties in the Greater Toronto Area jumped by 33.2 per cent from $688,011 in March 2016 to $916,567 last month, the Toronto Real Estate Board said Wednesday. Politicians, particularly in Ontario, have been under growing pressure to do something about housing prices that have far outpaced fundamentals such as wage growth. Sousa has indicated there will be measures in the upcoming budget to address the housing market.

he $240-million Credit Suisse/ SwissReal tower in the heart of downtown Vancouver will be completed in less than a year, but so far, only one tenant has signed up to move in. The tenant has committed for a 10th of the 370,000 square feet – leaving a state of emptiness that is unusual for an office skyscraper in this city. Even so, a huge shift in business tenancy is expected as the region experiences something it has not seen before: an office-tower building boom much of which is speculative construction rather than for specific committed tenants. “This is kind of uncharted territory for Vancouver,” said Mehdi Shokri, a principal with the capital markets team at Avison Young. “But I don’t see a big disaster occurring.” The Credit Suisse tower is only the most visible and furthest along of a second wave of new office towers planned for Vancouver and some key suburbs. A first cluster of towers – some two million square feet – was built downtown in the past three years. Another 11 office developments are proposed within blocks of Credit Suisse’s Exchange tower at Howe and West Pender streets, even while the office-vacancy rate in the region continues to inch up as a result of the first wave of building. But commercial brokers say the city is not about to be populated by ghost towers.

Franz Gehriger, the CEO of SwissReal Group who bought the original historic stock-exchange building in 2002 before partnering with Credit Suisse to develop it, said the main group interested in leasing Vancouver office space these days is the technology sector. Those companies make their deci-
Further government intervention will be needed if Toronto house prices continue soaring after the spring homebuying season, the head of Canadian banking at Scotiabank said Tuesday.
buyers. B.C. implemented a tax on foreign nationals who purchased property in Metro Vancouver in August, and prices have slipped since. O’Sullivan said Scotiabank (TSX:BNS) hasn’t developed a position yet on what measures should be implemented, but if there’s government action, the bank will support it. “Our core belief is that we need to move through this spring market. The spring market is everything in housing,” he said. “If at the end of that spring market Toronto still has higher volumes, strong double-digit price increases, then we think it will clearly be time for further action and we will be supportive of that action.” Politicians at various levels have been scrambling trying to figure out what to do to curb housing costs in Toronto that have accelerated to the point where many say they feel priced out of the market. Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa has promised some sort of housing affordability measures in the province’s upcoming budget. The average price of homes sold in the Greater Toronto Area in February soared 27.7 per cent compared with the same month a year ago, with the average selling price of all types of homes hitting $875,983. The average price of a detached home in the city of Toronto shattered the $1.5 million mark that month for the first time — higher than Vancouver.
Housing Boom Is Anything But as Ownership Loses Appeal By many measures, the U.S. housing market seems in very good shape. The National Association of Realtors in Washington said last week that contracts to buy existing homes jumped 5.5 percent in February, the biggest increase since July 2010. Fannie Mae’s National Housing Survey showed that Americans expect home prices to rise a robust 3.2 percent over the next year as its sentiment index reached a record high. So, are boom times ahead for housing? Not quite. To understand why, it helps to revisit recent history. The housing bubble of the early 2000s was driven by subprime mortgages and other loose-lending practices. The subsequent collapse left many potential new homeowners with inadequate credit scores, not enough money for a down payment and insufficient job security to buy a house. They also saw, for the first time since the 1930s, that not only house prices fall nationwide, but nosedive by a third. Homeownership plunged and those who did form households moved into rental apartments instead of singlefamily houses. That drove rental vacancy rates down and starts of multi-family housing -- about twothirds of which are rentals -- up to 396,000 units, more than the earlier norm of 300,000 starts at annual rates. But single-family housing starts -- even with the rebound to an

872,000 annual rate from the bottom of about 400,000 -- are still far below the pre-housing bubble average of more than 1 million. Despite the recovery in house prices, rents have risen at a much faster pace. As a share of median income, rents have jumped while mortgage costs have fallen. The latest data from the National Association of Realtors show its Housing Affordability Index was up 52 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 from the early 2007 low. Even with conditions shifting away from rental apartments in favor of single-family housing, the homeownership rate is unlikely

James O’Sullivan said the Toronto housing market is one that policy-makers should be most concerned about these days, given prices that have risen by nearly 30 per cent over the last year. “Double-digit price increases are not sustainable and they’re not healthy,” O’Sullivan said after Scotiabank’s annual general meeting. “This market has been going straight up for a very long time. So it’s going to come to an end at some point and it’s a question of how it ends. And we want to see it correct smoothly, we want to see a soft landing and what that would argue for is actions sooner rather than later.” Experts have suggested various ways of cooling the city’s real estate market, such as a levy on speculators and a tax on foreign

to rise from the current 63.7 percent to anything like its fourth quarter 2004 peak of 69.2 percent because of the reasons listed earlier. Many believe that because of the rise in Americans in the first-time homebuying age range of 25 to 44, there is a huge batch of households just waiting to buy single-family houses or at least rent more apartments.
